Therapy's biggest impact doesn't show up in some dramatic breakthrough. It shows up in the smallest moments. You bite your tongue instead of escalating. Welcome back into the Jason Kareg or Show Declan Kruger, Wanye Gretz sitting in for Jason Greger and Connor Helly, McKenzie McClendon with us as well as we are just ahead of the spec report with Mark Specter. Wanye just before we get ahead to that, Alex about to kick off the game tonight. Any final predictions here for the Alcs as they get this one rolling? Well, I'd just like to say that this is to me what being in sports radios all about. It's like watching sports live, being in the studio, TV's everywhere. It's thrilling. It's exciting. It's exhilarating. I can't wait to see which way this goes. It's very meta, isn't it? Whoa, it is indeed. Absolutely it is. All right, we are just ahead of the spec report. Like I mentioned, brought to you by GS Construction, they are hiring operators, pipe layers, into superintendant work for a fantastic company that loves to promote from within with great benefits and they are huge sports fans so you can apply at GS Construction.ca, slash company slash careers as we bring in. Mark Specter of Roger Sportsnet, spec, thank you so much for joining us especially, a little bit of a different show today, but how are you?
How is the weather in sunny California? Well, it's great down here, nice and warm. Or just playing a little bit of hockey, little practice time. Everything's good. My biggest issue is I wouldn't mind watching that Alcs game, but I can't get it out of my computer down here. I was going to ask about that actually. I was going to ask about that actually. I was going to ask if you were going to have a chance to watch the game down this down there. Sneaky big one for the Alcs, but I guess if you can't get it. No, no, no, no. Because anyone saw, you, TSN, you can't get it. If you go to their website, it can't show it down here in the States. And I've got, I've got old man regular cable on tell us, but I can't seem to figure out a way to get that to come onto my computer and watch the game. So I can't figure that out. And I don't think the CFL site shows the game's live or does it? No, they do not. So am I just like out of luck, Declan? Is that what you're telling me? Well, we'll do our best to give you the play by play without getting copyrighted. But this might be a Twitter watch for you today. It might be a Twitter follow and stream in this show here for what you can get. Yeah. Well, sometimes there's just a price to pay, isn't there?
Yeah. I guess so. So Phillip Hollander, he's obviously drawn in. It looks like he's going to be on the second line with Jason Dickinson and Kasperic Captain. So you know, obviously he seems skate today and talk to him. Just kind of, I guess, initial impressions on both on the skate today and then when he got a chance to talk to you guys. Well, I'm a little surprised he's jumping right in for one, but he is and that's good. I think it tells you if he looks like he's got a spot on that second line, well, whatever we're talking on the Dickinson line left wing. A hymen, I don't think is going to play. So probably captain and sits on the other wing with Dickinson. You know what? It's like, I don't know much about the guy. He's played. Hold on here. I'm about to look him up. He's played in his life 18 NHL games. So you know, I'm not going to, I'm not going to be asked to hear and tell you I know the whole book on him. He's got good size. I like Stan and X to him. Interview him today. He's got like, he's not a little guy. So that's good. I want my, if I'm a cocky person, I want my depth guys to have size, man.
Lots of room on the top six for little guys for sure, but I want my depth guys to have size. He's got that. He looks like he skates just fine. I, you know, the book on him is he maybe has some heavy boots. I wash up skate today. He looked okay to me. Again, you got to get in a game. You got to get him next to guys who are skating really well. That's what's going to tell you if you can keep up. And he's your typical quiet, hard work and smart, well spoken Swedish cat. So I've seen a lot of them in my day and they're all good people and a lot of them are good players. So let's see. Yeah. Lance had wanted me to ask Jason when Jason was honest, just a couple of segments ago about him jumping into the top six while Isaac Howard still hasn't maybe been afforded that chance. And Jason's answer was one kind of along the lines of like, well, hey, listen, life isn't fair. Sometimes that's just the way things break. Where do you come out on him coming in a meat coming in this quick right after the trade, getting a top six look where I coward is still, you know, and Jason also made the point like he's getting ozone time, you know, he's getting ozone draws like, but he's still playing on a fourth line role. How do you kind of compare and contrast the way Hollander's coming in versus what I
coward has been? Well, I mean, there's a couple of things. First of all, he's on a line. His centerman is Jason Dickinson. So okay, it's your second line right now, but it's really a third line. Really it's a third line, right? Like Dickinson's your three C here. So he's playing a line, you know, I mean, we kind of have a first line, two third lines and a fourth line here at Edmonton right now. So whatever the kid guy comes in, that's where you play him. Like I think, I guess what I'm reading in the T-lease, that is that the coach probably thinks he can get a trustworthy defensive game out of this guy and play him more minutes. I guess, you know, I have a feeling that Howard hasn't proved himself in that role. He hasn't, you know, Babcock's been trying to put in a, they're trying to get real stingy here and they're trying to be hard to play against and all that. How would it all get there? You guys, everybody out there. The only thing that can hurt Howard, the thing that, the thing that would have put, which
we phrase that, the thing that will hurt Howard the most, the most dangerous position for Howard is to be put into a position that he's not ready and he can't deliver at. If the coach elevates him, before he's ready to, to play the way the coach likes to be to, you know, play at a defensive level, the coach likes, forget the offense for now. If he can't, if he's not ready and you put him in the role and he fails, the next step is always a bad step. So let's just check Kai on Howard. He's in the lineup. That's good. He's playing. That's good. He's in a lot of every night. He's an injury away or a couple good games away from jumping up a little bit here, but just, just take her easy on Howard. He's just fine right now. What about Alex Formington and Matt Joseph? What have you made of their games so far? First four? Joseph, I don't mind because he's, you know, he's a fourth line-winger. So we're not judging him on points. I kind of like his game. He kills a penalty all right and he plays hard and hits once the wild.
He's got really good foot speed. Formington has quite disappeared since the pre-season. I will say that. In fact, he's probably gone the other way. His game is rusty and I think that's fair. Like leaving everything else out of it. The guy's been in Europe for three years. Winning a board battle in Geneva isn't the same as winning a board battle in Anaheim. Okay? It's not the same. So like everything about this team, new coach, new systems, new PK, a bunch of hurt guys, you got to show a little patience here. Like I don't care what you think of Formington. I don't care who we're talking about. You can't give a guy who's been three years in Europe four games and go, I can't play. You can't do it. Give him some, give him a chance here to get used to the game. If we're still talking like this about him in 12 or 14 games, okay, let's have the conversation. So Zach Hommons gave it today as well. Obviously, you made the point. You don't think he's going to play against San Jose. I don't think any of us expect him to play against San Jose. Jason doesn't think he's going to play against LA either.
Do you expect him to come in for the LA game or does that sound about right? I don't know. I mean, you know what? They're so secretive with these injuries. We even know what his injury is for Pete Seik's. Yeah, right. You know, my answer is almost always the same when you ask me about injuries, Deckus. I just don't have enough information to give you an accurate answer. So I'd rather just say, I'd rather take a knee. I don't know what he's hurt with. I don't know how bad he's hurt. He came on skate today. Looks great. You could be out another two weeks. Couldn't plan tomorrow for all I know. So I don't have you on that one. I'm afraid. Well, when he does come in, do you think like who do we think comes out of the lineup? Well, I mean, listen, there's a whole, like, there's a whole line of guys. Your entire second line isn't playing. Like if you put Nujan Hopkins between Savoyate left wing and Hymanate right, that's a, that's a pretty, don't you think? Isn't that a decent second line in most towns, right? It's pretty good second line. So there's three guys falling out of this lineup at some point. Now, maybe there'll be more injuries and all that, but, you know,
for instance, a guy like I coward, this is, I know that people say, oh, he needs to be in the top six to show you what he can do. Well, rookies don't walk into the top six. I got news for you. This is his time to build a base here. This is his time to, to build some confidence in his coach. So when all the big boys come back, it's someone else getting knocked out town, not him, right? If it happened tomorrow and three guys came back deck, who falls off the bottom of this thing? Max Jones, Samansky, maybe Formaton. Yeah. You know, sure, hopefully not Howard. I think he deserves a little more time. And I think he's earned it with the work he's done in limited minutes. So I think that's, those would be my three guys. What about you? Yeah. I mean, like Max Jones, obviously the obvious one. I made this point in the low down earlier. Like it's just, you know, no disrespect to Max Jones, but he obviously comes out of the lineup for Phillip Holland. And it's like that, you know, he is that guy. He is the first guy to come out of the lineup. Like that's just who he is. That's how he exists.
Matt Joseph, I think would be the second for me. I say it kind of begrudgingly, like I haven't disliked what I've seen from him. But he also, he kind of exists in that realm to attach maybe a, a bit of a different level because of the role. And then I guess probably Samansky would be the third one for me. But like Alex Formaton, and you made the point, we don't want to, you know, really say anything after four games. What my, the only thing I would say would be those four games, what we've seen in these four games might be pushed back to suggest. He would be the other guy would consider. So yeah, I mean, that's fair. Listen, there's some time here. Savoy apparently is still a ways away, right? Newgen Hopkins didn't skate with the team either. So we got a little bit of time. But there's different guys like it depends what we're doing here. If I'm keeping a 13th forward in town, he better be a veteran guy like, let's, you know, like a Max Jones. I don't want to keep Samansky as my 13th forward. Yeah, he needs to go to Baco and play, right? No point. And even when he does play, he's playing eight, seven minutes, we're kind of starting, we're starting to hit the point where we might be kind
of wasting our time on Samansky and Edmonton. Maybe he needs to go down. I hope power doesn't turn into that guy. Right? I just hope he doesn't. I hope he can manage a way to stay here. As for Formaton, you know what? Sink or swim like he's got to make this team. He's a veteran guy. Yeah. So he's going to get some time. But if he doesn't show it and a bunch of healthy dudes show up who are ahead of him in the lineup, he may be a casualty of all these injured guys coming back. Mark Spector of Roger Sports. And I joined in us here on the Jason Griger show Deck and Kruger one. Yeah, Greta setting in deep hearings back home. Bush. No surprise there. Obviously Ryan Shay, Connor Murphy, then Jake Walman, Thai Embersome, rounding out that third pair. Yep. We happy with all that. We happy with the Shakira Machuadulin up in the press box. Yeah. I mean, I think listen, when he did he play two games Machuadulin? Yeah, two. Yeah, I never since played two. And they haven't given up but even strength goal in two games. So, you know, I know, and I said that to Babcock today and he goes, yeah, but he said in an I'm in the first period, you could have given up a bunch of them.
But they got some saves. So, you know, I'd say to you, I'm not, there's only one reason I'm considering putting Machuadulin in the game here. And that's because we're playing his old team. Yeah. It's a little hockey thing like you try to get the guy in there. But at the stage that this team's that figuring out their systems, figuring out their PK, they've got a little traction here all of a sudden, like they let in. What are they let in? Seven and six, 13 goals, the first two games. And the last two games they've let in got three points, which is a different discussion, which is crazy. Yeah, which is crazy. Last two games in a little and three all the power play. So, I'm anything defensively at this young stage of the season. I'm kind of keeping the same. We're changing your changing your goalie tomorrow. Jerry's going to play. But, you know, as much as you'd like to play Machuadulin against his old team, I don't, I don't, if I'm coached to the team, I'm probably not playing anymore either. And well, let's talk about a guy who's playing his old old team and we'll keep this one brief and make it real quick. We won't harp on it too much. But I mean, just, you know, what's it, what's it going to mean for Darnell?
I listen, like there's, there's all kinds of guys we've covered over the many, many years. Every kid comes in a league and thinks, man, this is my team. I'm going to play from forever and almost no one does. They all move on. And sort of the longer you take to move on the harder it is. And then you get to the new place and you realize, hey, man, there's a whole new life out here. There's a whole new league. There's a, you know, so he's in a new place. He's got a fresh start. He's got a new role. And, you know what, the count on him. He scored a huge OT winner last night. So it'll be weird. It's always weird for these guys. I'm sure it's weird. But like you said, today he's practiced against the orders for a long time. So it's not going to freak him out playing a game against him for sure. Yeah. No, absolutely. Well, Spac, thanks so much for joining us. I'd last one here. I did off day in, in California. What does that look like for you? Well, that's a good question. I just finished writing and now I'm done this, this much looked forward to interview. And it's only four 19 out here in San Jose.
So I would, like I say, I'd love to turn on that Elk's game or go to a pub and watch it, but that didn't happen. Well, hey, I actually have some updates from you here on the text line. 1 8 3 3 4 11 14 40 by the way. Lance says isn't CFL on DeZone in the States. So you would need a DeZone subscription for that. But that's what I have. DeZone subscription. Okay. Perfect. There you go. And then Redman from Stony. He also said that he thinks in the States, you actually can watch the games on the CFL website. You just can't hear in Canada. So those are two possible options for you. Oh, this is awesome. Well, I'll keep both those in mind. Yeah. And see with this always a hacker out there in our, in our world is not thankful for them. There's always something zero, zero in the first quarter right now. By the way, spec, thank you so much for joining us. I could go. There's, there is a big game in town here. San Jose State University is playing Wyoming. It's a 9 p.m. Start here football game. Yeah, it's a big mountain West battle. That's what that is. That's a decent little conference there. Yeah. You know everything about this.
And I know nothing. Would they be starting at nine o'clock because mountain West is doing TV? Is that the deal? Yeah. So that's, that's pretty much how it works. Yeah. Yeah, starts a football game at nine. I know. It's crazy. We're starting hockey games at nine pretty soon here. There, they're, yeah, they actually have some that like Hawaii, they play in the mountain West as well. That's a different kind of conversation. But they actually, they live some games that will start 10 if you can even believe it. Yeah. I know. Which like, and when you think about it, that doesn't make sense for anybody. I mean, I guess it's so you can do back to back to back to back games. TV wise, but like at 10 o'clock West code, that makes sense for absolutely nobody. It's so ridiculous. The ratings must just be in the toilet. I'm not going to harp on that a whole bunch, but like just dude in San Jose state against Wyoming, where do you think the ratings start? Hey, name me the best guy that ever played for Wyoming. Josh Allen, quarterback of Buffalo. He did go to, he did go to Wyoming. Now to be fair, that was a bit of a layup because it is Josh Allen. Your point is taken. It just, you happen to walk into Josh Allen. I was going to say Tom Wilkinson.
Yeah. Hey, there you go. Well, spec, thank you so much for joining us. We appreciate it greatly. And we will talk to you later. All right, boys. See that. Have a good one. Mark Specter joining us here on the Jason Gregor show. If you're keeping score at home, that's Declan one spec zero with the assist to Josh Allen. The assisted, I mean, Josh Allen was like, it was such a layup, you know, that was awesome. It worked out a little too well. And I don't, the thing I'd have to check the schedule. I didn't want to go because that actually is a very real thing with the, and he was absolutely right about that with like the TV rights and the conference affiliations. I don't actually think the game is a 9 p.m. local start. Now, I'm not going to say he's wrong. I would have to look into that. Like he's out there in the markets. We might know better than me, but I have it. Yeah, I have it as a 7 p.m. local start for us, which would make it six out there, which I actually did think was more outpropo for the Friday night prime time game. But I digress. All right, we'll take a break. Low tide is going to join Declan, Wanya and McKenzie McClendon next.
This is the Jason Gregor show on sports 1440. Welcome back into the Jason Gregor show Declan Krueger, Wanya, Greta McKenzie McClendon sitting in for Jason Gregor and Connor Halley, as we get to about the last half hour of the show or so here Edmonton, Alex currently in Hamilton, about five minutes to go in the first quarter. That one's still scoreless. And we're just ahead of low tide as we go in the room brought to you by action electrical. They are the most diversified electrical contractor in Alberta with four divisions in projects, service, tag and solar for commercial or residential contact them today at action electrical.net as we bring on low tide and low tide. The first question I had asked Jason, the first question I had asked back. And I'm going to ask you as well. Philip Hollander, he's obviously the news of the day. He's drawing in to the lineup. He's going to be in the top six playing alongside Jason Dickinson and despair captain, which we made the point is really kind of a third line cause playing as the second line. But your thoughts on him drawing into the lineup and then obviously just expectations. Well, one thing that I looked at he hasn't played that much in the last two years with Pittsburgh
because he had the blood clot. But when he played with Sydney, Crosby and Brian Rost, there was some real offense there. He produced at a pretty impressive level. Now when he plays on third and fourth line, he doesn't score as much as you would expect. And you know, the only subplenty of those types. But there is a little bit of offensive upside. He finished, I think second in the Swedish league in points and 2425. This is a really sneaky get from Stan Bowman. I, you know, I'm interested in why Babcock is putting it there. But I think the owners might feel he has a little more offense than most of the people who looked at the trade thing. And the fact that they put him where he is suggests that maybe the others manage when he coaching staff believe the same thing. I'll be interested in seeing what he, what kind of numbers he has after 20 games. Uh, yeah. And you touched on it a little bit by saying, you know, by peaking the interest of what his numbers can look like and what they can look like after 20 games. Like I guess anytime you bring in a player to a team like this is maybe the most fair way
to him to phrase it. What is best case scenario for Philip Hollander? Like what, what do these 20 games? What would his best case scenario within the realm of possibility look like for him? That would make you stop and say like, yes, we got one there. Oh boy, they nailed it. Well, there's two different ways. If you have up on a skill line, then you want them to be, you know, therapy's biggest impact doesn't show up in some dramatic breakthrough. It shows up in the smallest moments. You bite your tongue instead of escalating. You put your phone down instead of firing off that text. You say what you actually mean instead of what would hurt someone else the most. I'm one of those people who gets excited for football season way before the first kickoff. That's why a trip to total wine and more has become part of my game day routine. I can get the cooler ready with my favorite beers and ready to drink cocktails. I'm usually picking up enough for everybody. So it's nice knowing I'm scoring the lowest prices. This season make total wine and more part of your game day tradition. Spirits are not sold in Virginia and North Carolina. Drink responsibly. B21. After 20 games, if he's on the second line, you'd like him to have 10 points because that's about a 40 point player. And then the NHL 40 point player on the second line is about average.
And you know, you didn't create for a below average player. On the checking line, I would just like to see him out score. And it is possible. You know, the others have an entire second line on the IR when New Gene Hyman and Matt Savoy return. It could be Dickinson and and calendar and you know, cast very capitol. If that line can outscore at five on five and you know, he's contributing. It would be less offensively than if he was on a high skill line. But that's all I'd like to see because the others, you know, since Conor McDavid, it is very rare since 2015. But he wants to have a third and a fourth line that outscores opposition at five on five. This guy's a two-way player. He's got size and speed. There's a lot to like about him. And I think that, you know, I got like Matthew Joseph who came in and you know, he has great reputation. He's not as fast maybe as, you know, people thought he might be. This fellow might be a little faster. I think there's an opportunity here for him when everybody's back and healthy.
I think he might be playing and some of the other guys who were here when he arrived might not be. The Babcock is still kind of looking at this team. But I'd say outscoring on the third line and scoring enough to stay on a second line if he were blessed with the opportunity. Do you, any qualms to the fact that he comes in and he's seeing the top six immediately? Wow, Icawered on the other hand has, you know, lived on the fourth line. Well, I, you know, I remember when the others would call up somebody or they'd have a hot shot player and when Matti made a decision on him, this is 20 years ago, over 20 years ago. But that's, this is what, what would happen. What's happened to die, Howard is how, you know, Matti had a, had a broad shrimp at Yani Rita and those guys and it tells me that the Babcock either isn't convinced or they've decided to wait until Newt comes back and, you know, maybe a time when Leon is playing center.
Right now, Icawered has a look of a guy who's headed the Bakersfield or to another NHL city. He's playing like eight minutes a night. You, if you're exceptional, you can't do a lot with that. So, and, you know, Babcock's, you know, his job is to win hockey games and, and we'll see how this goes. But if I'm leaning anywhere, it's leaning towards a trade of like Howard sometime this year and, and he could get sent down first, but I, I think they would probably try to move them before they did that. Did he get be sooner than later? Yeah, I do. I do. You know, there's, they, they're, the key now, the deck one is for the Babcock to get a feel for the team and, and, you know, you can tell like the fact that they tried it for, they needed a right handed center. Everybody said it was going to be docked. Everybody said it was going to be Kirby docked on Montreal and then they checked down to Hollander as a left handed left winger. So that tells us a couple of things. Number one, they made some decisions on some guys and then, you know,
Fomenton and, and Joseph may not have done enough for them on the penalty kill and maybe they're looking for other options there. So there's going to be churn. There always is with a new coach. And, and I think Howard and Fomenton and Joseph and, and those guys are probably not that they're going anywhere, but they're more suspect than, than, you know, positive right now. And got like happening is on the other side of that. He's playing well. And now they'll see what they have, with the player that just declared in Hollander, but I, you know, Boulton dock played well enough for Babcock to stay in the lineup. So I think he's fine. Let's take it back. The three players who are on IR, they're going to have to make some decisions. Max Jones is easy. Josh the math is easy. I don't know the, you know, Stan Boulman's kind of attached to I-Coward. So I don't think they'd send them out, but they might trade him. And I think that it could happen as soon as Babcock saying, yeah, I know, I know what I have here. I'm happy with this line. And, you know, proceed accordingly, because I'm not going to play this
player. So I, it could happen fairly quickly. And if you're, if you're Boulman, I think he made a dispute trade in picking up Hollander. So if he ends up working out, then I think you'll see another shoe drop here. This lineup isn't done yet. Low tide joining us here on the Jason Gregor showed Declan Kruger sitting in for Connor Hallianne. Jason Gregor, you can hear him Monday, noon to two here on sports 1440 host of the lowdown. Babs had made a comment when talking to the media earlier today about he wants, you know, he wants the team to focus on being a better four-checking team. And I was trying to think back. And like, yeah, the first fancoover team, you know, the four-check wasn't great. The first period against Anaheim didn't really have a chance to four-check. And then in the second and third period, didn't have a chance for a completely different reason. But like, I don't know if I've watched this team and thought like, oh, yeah, wow, four-checking has been a really, has been a real glaring weakness. Like, am I off my rocker with that? Do you think that's been something that this team needs to be that much better at? No, I think what happened was the ducts blew the doors off the orders in the first period of the other.
Oh, speed was just insane. Yeah. And that's like that clock's watching that. And he goes, I want that. I want what Anaheim has. So that's what I think this, that's what this is, where, where, you know, he's like, he's talking like it's been a season-long thing. But really what it's been is, he did not like what happened in the first period against Anaheim. And so, you know, and they like, I'll give credit to Babcock and to the orders because they are not a great second-period team. But against Anaheim, they really turned it around. I'd love to know what he said because they were a different team. But I think that all of the things that Babcock said were related to that first period where Anaheim looked like, it looked like last spring. Again, when the orders were all hurt and not playing well. And, you know, he's got, Babcock's got a great line. Like, that top line can equalize anything. So there, like, there were four games in and there's seven goals, four, and zero against a five on five. So I think he had his top lines set the tone. And then everybody
else was racing in the second and the third period. But that first period, I think, scared Babcock and kind of let him know that, you know, so far he's been skating with one good line and then three fourth lines. I think that first period against Anaheim kind of shook up this coaching staff a little bit. They've got to do a little bit more work. And I do think that's why Holland hurts on the second line at practice today. LT, they're saying that the salary cap is going to jump from 88 million to 127 million by 2829. I just want to get your take on ignoring these eye popping numbers. But I'm just wondering, like, what do you think the impact will be on the NHL with the salary cap going that high? Well, I, first of all, I really regret having so many wagon wheels and eat more as when I was a kid because I would have loved to be in the NHL. When this kind of money was around, but I think there's going to be more open thought about first of all, for general managers to make trades that maybe they wouldn't have thought about, like the others, you know, right now everybody's on the IR so they don't have a lot of money to wheel.
But when players get back here, I think that we're going to see some moves, not just the others, but other teams. I've seen Nashville met another trade today. I think you're going to see a lot of activity. We've kind of been clogged up here in trades for a long time because of money. People don't want to take on a big salary unless they can send one away. For the next, I don't know, 18 months or so, or maybe even longer. NHL general managers will have more freedom to make moves. And that means they'll be able to trade some guys who, you know, were previously thought to be, you know, untradable, Patterson and Vancouver, you know, there's talk of the burn cat right now, being dealt. So I think some of those bigger, bigger salaries will move. And I think Anaheim also set the tone with what they did in the summertime. Maybe desperation or worry about losing another guy, but you're going to see good young players signed, even if they've only played like 14 NHL games. If a team's convinced of them, then I think they'll go ahead and pay them the bigger dollars for longer term. Those are the two changes, I think. We'll see more trades and we have it
a long time. And the younger players who are really good are going to get paid right away. It's incredible. I saw an interview with Matthew Barnaby and he was talking about being part of the 03 Rangers lineup with like Lindross and Burrey and Brian Leach and all these different guys. And their salaries in 2003 was a 93 million dollar cap. And like you won't find too many businesses that have had sort of this weird U-shaped salary progression, right? And when you think about Paul Korea making $10 million a year, not that it was undeserved, but he's making $10 million a year in 1994 in 1994 dollars. The NHL is really just sort of catching up to where it was 30 years ago. It's crazy. Oh yeah. But it's also why, you know, majorly baseball players, the MLB players association has always been the strongest, always been the strongest going back to when I was a kid. Why they're so absolutely dead against a salary cap because salary cap suppress and what happens is or what happened in the NHL, maybe it's because the personality of the
top hockey players is it right now it's going all the really great young players are getting the big money. And that means that at some point in time there's only so much pie to go around. So the third and fourth liners are going to be making $875,000 or $1.2 million because the big money is going to go to the big players. And majorly baseball, they've had basically the Korea period, let's say they were equal with majorly baseball at that time, but they've been running free for decades now, where the NHL has the salary cap and the salary cap suppresses. It suppresses the top end and it makes everybody more shades of equal. And that's why you've got economic David probably leaving hundreds of millions on the table by the time his career is over, which is I mean ridiculous, but that is the case. I'll just check in the numbers here LT and it said in 95 96 league revenue was 936 million and it's estimated to be 7.5 billion this season. Right. Right. And so don't get into a negotiation with
people who know lots about money. It's good advice on a Friday afternoon. And you look at every once in a while, Declan will say to me, Hey, did you know this NBA player isn't a regular? It makes more than Mac David and I cringe. I just cringe. And I saw Mac David the other day saying that he's delighted about, you know, the NHL salary is going up. It is insane. What economic David hasn't made in his 11 or 12 years of the NHL. Yeah, I always think about that as well for like a guy like LeBron James. And it's obviously very different scenarios, but you think about the money, you know, he brought in and generated for the league as a whole and he's like, you can make the argument. He's been underpaid by a billion dollars, right? You know, and Conor Mac David in that same threshold and he is taking like a legitimate legitimate discount here over the next couple of years. So it's always just a funny kind of side conversation. LT, just one more for you. Zach Hyman skated today, not projected to go in San Jose. Jason doesn't think he's going to go against LA either. When do you think we see
him back and who comes out of the lineup? Well, I think they've got time now. They've bought some time with their success that they've had. So you want to make really good and sure, you know, Hyman is like 34. So chances are you're not going to get him for, you know, he might be out of the lineup again later in the year. So you want to make absolutely sure he's ready to go. So sometime in the, you know, latter part of October, I would imagine he's probably, you know, maybe he doesn't play in LA. Maybe he plays later next week. But I think keeping him healthy is the ideal thing. So if there's, there's no pressure right now. They don't have to race him back. The team is winning hockey games. So make sure he's 100% do the same with NUGE. So while a little different, he's a younger player. It's a pretty severe injuries. But for a while, but he should be able to recover and go right back in the lineup. But as far as who will be out of the lineup, I think probably my guess is Samansky. They'd have to move Fredric over or
insert dock into the lineup after he gets off IR. But eventually it's going to be a number one guy heading out. It will be Max Jones. Then I think it'll be Samansky. And then you're going to have to make a decision either I coward or one of the veterans that they did bring in. And I mean, it could be farming. It could be Joseph could be any of those guys. But but right now, I mean, I think that the indications are based on the lines we saw today that if he does enough before checking and playing well, that the new guy that they got from Pittsburgh is going to be moving ahead as some of the guys who were in the lineup when he was traded for. I think that Babcock has made a decision on a couple of players here. And we'll find out if I'm right here in the next couple of weeks. Well, thank you so much for joining us. Appreciate it, Greatly. It's it's crazy. We do this every day from noon to two. And I still find a way to be nervous interviewing you in this format. But I appreciate it greatly. Thank you so much. And enjoy the Thanksgiving weekend. Happy Thanksgiving, Altees. Thank you. I just want to can I ask one more
question? Oh, only if it's not hard. Okay. So I'm watching the Elk's game here. Yes. And my Elk's running back is running into the left tackle because the left tackle is being pushed over by the defensive player on the Hamilton side. Who made the mistake there? Because my running back, if he'd run the left, he would have had clear sailing and he ran right into the tackle deck list. So what probably happened is the read. He probably went where he was supposed to go based on the read and the play design. The penetration was just that good from Hamilton's defensive line. Now, in that situation, if you're a really good running back, you want to be able to make the read and bounce it to a different gap. He probably just committed to the play and got blown up because of good defensive line play. So you chalked that one up to the defense. Okay. During the commercial break, I need you to call the Elk's side line and get that straightened down. I've been asking for a job like every time I see him. So you don't have to tell me twice. Thank you, Loatheed. All right, Loatheed. I was Loatheed joining us here on the Jason Gregor Show. We're going to take one final
break as we head into the Thanksgiving weekend. I think we've done pretty well this last hour and a half. All things considered. I feel like I have a rocker and knife in my chest. So that being, yeah, your Cal Pickard. Yes. I'm UC Markin in. Therapy's biggest impact doesn't show up in some dramatic breakthrough. It shows up in the smallest moments. We'll always have that. I will take one final break. This is the Jason Gregor Show presented by playalberta.c. on sports1440 stream on sports1440.ca live on YouTube Facebook X Instagram and Twitch. Welcome in one final time to the Jason Gregor Show here before the long weekend.

And as always, the Jason Gregor Show brought to you by playalberta.ca we're live on sports1440 YouTube and Facebook. And all that revenue stays right here in Alberta at playalberta.ca tonight's lot of max 80 million dollars plus 14 max millions and 80 prizes of 100 K get your tickets at playalberta.ca. And I mentioned you guys I actually did buy a ticket for this one. I think I don't know. I don't really play the lottery often. I don't track the lottery. I think this is the biggest I've ever seen it. I've seen it get up to 70 million maybe 75. I don't know if I've ever seen it at 80 really quickly and one. You're already rich. So this doesn't count. But come on now. But if if you guys won this like what are we? What are we spending it on? What are we splers? This is going to sound stupid, especially at 549 at the end of a work week. But like I don't want to win the lottery. I like that. Because it's real. It would actually ruin my life because suddenly people will be like, oh, an early reason. It's good. You won the lottery. And I'd be like, oh my god, I work so hard.
They're like, no, it's because you won the lottery. I don't know that it would necessarily be helpful to me. It would probably be a huge disincentive plus there's other people that really want to win the lottery. So I'm like, well, they could win the lottery. That's why I look at it. Same with 50 50s. I've never bought a single ticket in my life. Really? Do you follow Barstool a little? Do you know big cat? Yep. I feel like in some ways you guys are you guys have some personality alignment, right? Like the way you handle or there's formerly Oralers Nation and the way he handles barstool sports. But he is a big 50 50 guy. And I could have seen you I could have seen you along that realm. Yeah. But you're you know, out there buying thousands of dollars worth of 50 50 tickets making a but I guess not. I don't bet on sports and I don't gamble really. Yeah, I I don't like I you know, I bet on sports. I dabble, but I don't I've never ever gotten to a spa where I needed to chase my losses. So it's a tough. Sorry. No, I was going to say that's good because that's a slippery slope to go down for someone who you know loves being addicted to stuff. Pretty good. I was able to stay away from that one. Old check mark for the Dexter.
What McKenzie, did you answer? No. Okay. What I would do is one by house because this housing market for sure. You know, buying one unless you're making really good money. You need an 80 million dollar payout. Exactly. Paying off all my student debt. I have to start paying those loans back in about a month and I'm really not looking forward to it. And traveling as well because that's also really hard to do when you're little like you want to do it when you're young. But it's really hard to do when you have no money. Not that I don't have any money, but liquid cash that I can just spend. It's very difficult to come across. That's an interesting thing about backpacking. Is it when you get there and you start talking to other backpackers, you realize nobody has any money. They just figured it away. They're selling their blood for years on end. There's some sort of rug pole crypto coin type thing. But like I always was the same way thinking like, Oh, I can't go traveling. What am I a Rockefeller? Like this isn't going to happen. And then when you get there and you realize like, there's a lot of people scraping it together to make it happen. But it's such an enriching thing to do.
Yeah. I just I can't like justify it. You know, like not that like life experience and that kind of thing isn't like doesn't make you rich in life. But when I have like bills to pay practical risk in life, I'm like, ah, I don't know if I can do it. I think traveling is a little overrated. What? Yeah. I think it's very valuable. I think it's great to get out and see the world, especially like I love playing. You know the game Geoguester where it drops. You want to random spot in the map. You have to figure out where you are. I love playing Geoguester. Like I love seeing the world. There are a bunch of cultures that interest me greatly. But I think as a whole, it's like it's never as much fun as you think it's going to be. It's always a little more expensive than you budget for. It's a great experience. Don't get me wrong. But I just think in a lot of ways, it's overrated compared to what we think it is. This is very rare that I disagree with you on something because most of the time I have no idea what you're talking about with the sports and all. But of course, I disagree. I think that traveling is one of those things that's extremely
hard to do. But I've never, I didn't start traveling until I was 30. And I only started traveling because my sister was going to school in Spain. And she was like, if you don't come here, like you shouldn't even have a passport. I'm like, well, how am I even supposed to make this work? I don't get it. It's an incredible time. Time slows down when you're traveling. A week feels like a month, a month feels like a year. And the people that you meet traveling, it's really interesting. I think it's hard to be racist if you travel. Because you go around and I've realized being in foreign countries, I have more in common with people halfway around the world than I do with people right at the street. And unless you're able to lock in and see people, that means you can't stay there resort. You have to go get in the streets wherever you're at and stuff like that. I would take exception to that. I think traveling is actually not overrated for the most part. Well, I'll give you this credit. I've never traveled. I've never gone backpacked on a budget in Europe for a summer or gone to Thailand and lived very cheaply for two months or whatever it is. Like the traveling I've done, like the traveling out of North America has been very limited and
done a little bit more hotels and stuff like that. And so I haven't maybe had a young person's traveler experience. But I just think like every time you travel, you know, by the end, you're ready to go home. You always spend way more money than you want to end up spending. And I get like you, you can make money back. You can never get the time back. But there's just, I'm not saying it's not worth it. I'm just saying a little overrated. That's all. Here's how I know it's not overrated. You come back from a trip. You've gone three weeks. You land somebody, some kind soul picks you up the airport. And you're so pumped. You're like, you won't even believe what I've been up to for the last three weeks. And you start rambling away about all the crazy stuff you saw. And then you say, so what's new here? It's never, there's never anything new. And that's not a diss against debbentant. That's just like the pace of play when you're at home is a much slower time than when you're on the road. I find there's something to be said for that. Do you, when you traveled, did you get home sick? No. And I've lived in a foreign country. And this is partially like being a digital nomad, right? Like it's not like
the olden days where you'd take a steamer trunk and get on the Queen Mary and go across the ocean, it took four months. Like you get to wherever you're going, you pull out your phone, you're looking at the same stuff you were looking at when you were at home. And you're never really disconnected anymore from people you love, right? Which is good or bad. Because you can't unplug. Right? I'll never forget though, being in Thailand when Sam Ganya got nine points. Bet you wish your home to that one. Well, my colleague, Jay and I traveled for a day too long. We were in the jungle at like a jungle party and then we came back to our room and it was like, we've missed the most important thing that happened in the last 20 years. Curse back packing. We wanted to leave him fly home even though it was already over. Edmonton Alex in action. Mackenzie is going to tell you about that in a second here during her update. Thank you to one, yay grads.
