The Washington Commanders fell to 1-3 after a 30-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in London, and 10 penalties exposed a problem that has become increasingly difficult to dismiss. Washington’s recurring discipline mistakes, including costly errors from veteran players, have now surfaced repeatedly through the first month of the season. The officiating was frustrating, but it wasn’t why the Commanders lost — and the mistakes they can control have to stop.
Then, Marcus Mariota leaves with a knee injury, rookie Athan Kaliakmanis shows both NFL ability and NFL inexperience in relief, and why Washington’s season is not lost at 1-3 — even though losing to Indianapolis makes next week against the New York Giants significantly more important.
Host David Harrison covers the the Commanders Commanders for the Locked On network and for WUSA9 as a digital beat reporter.

Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome inside today's episode of Lockdown Commanders. I'm your host, your guy on the ground, David Harrison. And on today's episode, why one in three does not make this a lost season, but it does make next week against the New York Giants more critically important in what Ethan Calliac Man has showed after Marcus Mario to went down. But first, why the Washington Commanders recurring discipline problem is bigger than one bad afternoon in London. Make sure you're following and listening over at Amazon Music. So you never miss an episode into this episode is brought to you by Fandall. Make this your most rewarding season ever with Fandall rewards of every week. Chuck the Fandall app and see what's waiting for you here in time. I'm hot spurs stadium where the Washington Commanders obviously just dropped a very, very disappointing game. Brutal is how one person put it to me, not a media member, somebody who is inside the team. Just a brutal day, man. Just a day where for the Washington Commanders, everything that could go wrong just seemed
to go wrong. And because of that, there's going to be multiple kind of conversations, call them narratives, call them headlines. They're going to call them come out of this game. And I think you're going to have a variety of topics from the injuries, obviously, to the penalties, to the discipline of the team, to the execution down the stretch. And I think that what I want to do here is I want to start this conversation off with what I feel like is the most impactful moving forward for this Washington Commanders team. And for me, it's the discipline aspect of it, right? Because I think when you look at it, let's just be up front. The Washington Commanders end up with 10 penalties in this game. The Indianapolis Colts end up with one. And that penalty wasn't called to like 10 minutes left in the game. They got the first penalty of the game called against them. And even that one was a pass interference. Or I think they called it defensive holding penalty. You know, Ethan Caliac, Manus was trying to hit Austin Ecclerick, converted first down on a fourth down play. They finally get called for a flag for defensive holding. The washman is getting a new set of downs. Very next play.
Very next play. As literally, as I'm sitting here typing tweets in the terrible Tottenham Hotspur Wi-Fi signal that the commuters finally got a penalty called on the other side of the year. The Colts finally got a penalty called against them. As I'm tweeting that. Anything Caliac, Manus, goes deep to the Army Brown on the right side of the field. And just very clearly, very obviously is held, is interfered with in a way that significantly hindered his ability to go after the football. And we know that the receiver and the defender both have the right to go after the football, pass interference happens when one or the other player significantly interferes with their ability to go and do that. And the defender, I don't know what his name is because I don't cover the Indianapolis Colts. And the defender absolutely significantly hindered the Army Brown's opportunity to go after that football. The ref, who honestly, this is the guy that I've got the problem with. I actually tweeted 90 in black and white because that's the shirt number that he was wearing the ref over there. I would be surprised if he's got money on the game because he's the ref who didn't throw
the flag on that play. Now the official in the middle of the field did throw a flag on that play. And then as they come together, black and white number 90, basically gets them to no return. The penalty is there was no flag on the play, which everybody in this stadium, you see it on the big screen. I'm sure you saw it at home on the broadcast. If you're sitting in the press box with me, like every single person in this stadium can see that was absolutely, it was textbook defensive pass interference that gets called back. But however, and I want to make this clear, this game was not lost on penalties. Now I will say this, I will say this, the disparity because some of the penalties that were called against the wash manners were so my newt, were so, I called them weak. There were such weak penalties that it is not like physically possible for the Minneapolis cult to have played the same football game and not committed some of the same weak level infractions that the wash the player has made. Now, I had one response on Twitter that said, exactly. And if you're going to call it a week against one team, call it a week against the other
team. I don't want to get too deep into this because this is not locked on NFL officiating. But what I would say is actually don't call it a week on either team. Don't call it a week at all. Like this is a physical, violent game. I understand that the NFL wants points, the NFL wants highlights. And that's what the NFL wants. This officiating crew should get the worst post game report card of the season because you absolutely took away what could have otherwise been a very entertaining game for the National Football League. You've got deep pass opportunities, you got big run opportunities, you got run after catch opportunities, being called back, being negated on very ticky tack penalties. And there are just so lopsidedly on one side of the field. That is not a good product from the National Football League. And I'm sure Colts fans through the roof don't care. Sock your wine and soccer crime, whatever because it's not why you lost the game anyway. And listen, it's not why the wash smears lost. I will say this though, I will get to the level today on this game. I don't think I've ever actually said this post game for a single game in my tire time
covering sport. I will say today the ticky tack calls and the amount of lopsided calls that were being held against the commanders versus the Colts prevented the wash the commanders from effectively getting back into this game. I'm not saying they would have won. I'm not saying any of that if these calls are either even or just let these guys play football. But I will say that the opportunity for the wash smears get back into this game absolutely would have been impacted greater had the wash smears not been subjected to this level. And I'm going to say I'm going to say it out loud and I know you know some people are going to say, oh, you're making excuses. I mean, I can't say enough times. They didn't lose this game because of the penalties and still someone's going to say you're just making excuses because that's just how this world works. But Dan Quinn can't say the players can't say it because they will all get fined and penalized everything else. So I'm going to say it for them. I'm going to say it for them. But the other side of that coin is discipline. This is not a discipline football team right now. And it starts with not just the coaches, it starts with the veterans on the team because
we now have extensive examples of veterans making mistakes that veterans should not make. Week one, you got Stefan Diggs and you have the pile driver penalty after the touchdown that costs them yards. And listen, I will sit here and say, Drew Stevens, you got to make that extra point anyway brother. You still got to make that extra point. But there is no denying that there is a correlation. There's a direct correlation between Stefan Diggs, that pile driver penalty and the extra point. And I'm not one to sit here and say like, hey, hey, Steph, remember week one, what you did. And I'm going to hold that against you. So it's not a Stefan Diggs problem. But this is becoming a near weekly situation. You got the Frankie Loubos celebration. I love Frankie. I love Kay Medrano. I think Kay Medrano is a really great kid. But Frankie knows better. Frankie knows that you cannot enter the field of play as a non active player, non uniform player, whatever you want to call it. And go out there and celebrate with your teammates and do those types of things, right? I saw Trey Amos when Jaylen Lane had to be carted off the field.
I saw Trey Amos come onto the field to go wish his teammate, wish his brother, good recovery and hey, we're with you, hey, we got you back. All those things. But he was one of the last ones off the sideline. And while I can't guarantee this is what he was doing, it certainly seemed to me like it was kind of a hey, I need to make sure I'm okay to do this. Like, that's Trey Amos. It's a second year corner, right? So, and again, it's just like Stefan. It's not to hold a grudge or it's not to pull up past things to kind of try to slam somebody, but it's the pattern. It's the pattern. And then today's game, you have Result Douglas making a huge play on third down. Great hit. Stop the culture. You have a third down conversion, brings up fourth and one. Defences is rolling at that point. They already have two takeaways. They're making Daniel Jones look flustered. The commanders are still winning. Even when Mark's marry out of the game, which we'll talk about here in just a minute, they're still winning this contest. And Result Douglas goes out there now. What a lot of people will say is, well, the Minneapolis coasts don't end up doing anything with that possession. And I hear you, but it's not a no harm, no foul situation because it's the behavior
that opens the door for the harm and the foul that you need to get corrected. And again, Result Douglas is another veteran in this locker room. So you got a veteran. You got a team captain with a C on his chest. You got team captains in the sense that people listen to you because you're experiencing you have that veterinary ability. This has got to get corrected. And as much as we want to put it on Dan Quinn, don't be wrong, Dan Quinn, absolutely responsible for it, absolutely responsible for it. But I will tell you this, I've never met a coaching staff that goes out there and tells their players, it's okay if you're undisciplined. It's okay if you make that dumb. It's like, it's okay if you get lost in the emotions of the game. Pro coaches and zero coaching staff will ever take that stance. The players at the end of the day and between the lines and players will tell you this themselves, they've got to get this thing fixed and it starts with the vets. If the vets are making these mistakes, then that's when you have a real discipline problem. This team has got to get that discipline problem corrected and they've got to get it corrected now. You can't afford to do that against the New York Giants. You got three out of four games now. You have examples of discipline issues creeping in and causing problems from the Washington
Command. The next Marcus Mario is injury forced a seventh round rookie into a very tough situation with eighth and caliac man has showed enough to separate inexperience from incompetence and that distinction matters. Back here now time. I'm hot spur stating where the washman is just fell to one in three on the season. We talked about the discipline factor of what's happened with the washman so far this season and really it's not the all encompassing conversation. We will have that on the next episode of locked on commanders which I'm just going to give you a programming notice right now. I fly 350 local time here in London, which is what 212 1110 50 AM Eastern time land back home right around seven eight o'clock PM in Dallas. Gotta go home. I'm not sure when the Tuesday episode is going to come out. I'm going to try to get it done Monday before I leave London. So just be just be flexible with me please. Kind of just hang in there as I try to figure this out. But we will get episodes out and we talked about this preseason right this first month of the season. We got to figure out who the washman commanders are and I said this in the final pre regular
season up so locked on commanders that this team cannot wait until after the first month of the season to figure out who they are and we cannot wait until the end or until after the first month of the season to figure out who this team is. This is that this is that time period. This is week four. And unfortunately what we have learned about this Washington commanders team is they're going to be banged up like this is a banged up next man of team. Listen, this is a banged up next man up sport right. But we're talking about to levels that not ordinary team like there's a mean right there's a middle line and all of this stuff every single season. The washing the commanders yet again we talked about this last year. We're talking about again this year yet again are on the on the short end of that stick or they're on the long end of that stick because they have so many players they came into this game and I don't have the list of front of me right now so hopefully I remember everybody they came in this game. No jaden Daniels no Terry McClaurne after the hamstring injury suffered Friday no Laramie Tunsell who's already on I.R. No Nick Cross who also they know Rashad White right you've got five six seven players
no Treya missies on I.R. No D.T. Rich wise who you know I know like a lot of us can kind of forget about but he was a very important part of what this defensive line was going to do last year. There's a reason he still here even though he had that injury and even though the team knows coming into it like he was going to be you know hampered by that injury and coming into this season like you're missing six seven eight impactful players from this game already and then you come into it and you lose Marcus Mario you lose Jalen Lane you lose Jeremy Reed for a period time there was a period of sunny styles when in the medical tent and then there was at least one series of not more than just that one full series where he wasn't out on the field. Frankie Loubos get his first game back. Chigger Conquels get his first game back like this team like it's a question of continuity right it's a question of continuity and again just like the penalties it's not an excuse for why you lost but when we talk about the totality of the season why are things going the way that they are for the Washington commanders injuries absolutely do play a part in this and players and coaches never going to stand here and say well you know if we weren't injured we didn't have all these injuries all this other stuff we would be fine but all
because they can't do that you can't do that when you're in the trenches but the person who's looking up the trenches watching the trenches we can say that so that's why I'm going to say that I'm going to say this the Washington commanders win this game if Marcus Mario doesn't get injured and unfortunately Mario did get injured right so that goes into the next part of this conversation which is the execution on the field and the reason why I'm going to say to you at one in three losing to the Minneapolis Colts this is not a loss season this is not a lost season the reason is not a lost season is because you still have effective processes in place because if you watch this game you saw the same game I did a think Kelly I command us absolutely had opportunities and have the ability displayed the ability to affect the Indianapolis Colts defense now let's let's put let's put this in context right the Indianapolis Colts defense not exactly the toughest unit in the national football league right but are they on par with say the New York Giants defense who's not getting a fast Russian is not doing well in solving opponents yes I think that they can be a little bit kind of similar to each other now are they as good as the San Francisco 49ers
defense I would lean towards no and all those things again we'll get into those conversations deeper and more accurately when those times come but the bottom line is they think Kelly I'm anistamine looked like a functional NFL quarterback now what he also looked like is a very inexperienced NFL quarterback there's there's a sack plate big plate you watch fans get down in the field goal range now you're just trying to get maybe a touchdown try to get closer to field goal range whatever you need to do third down comes up a think Kelly I command the Indianapolis Colts walk eight dudes up to the line of scrimmage and that is something that you can call your man this is just not equipped right now to to handle right and again so excuse just the fact of what it is and we can sit here and we can say David Blod that's your job Dan Quinn that's your job to get him prepared for all of this stuff but you have to know you have to know you hear you're enough quarterbacks talk about Tom Brady talks about experience and the biggest teachers and also in just in your own professional life if you've been 10 years in your industry you already know from year one to year 10 you are so much wiser you're so much better why because of those experiences they think
Kelly I command this does not have these experiences I talked to someone within the organization and basically got kind of affirmation that listen anything Kelly I command this already knows and he's going to know even more when he goes back to look at the tape like you have eight guys up on the line of scrimmage and you have to be able to do that math and understand you don't have enough guys to block all of this stuff so you got to either make a check and do all these other things like you would love for anything Kelly I command this to maybe signal a check and say hey we're going to shift our blocking to my blind side so that if there's an extra rusher that I can't account that we can't account for for a blocking standpoint it's a guy that I can see that check doesn't happen and so understand this I want to make sure I separate this this part is an example from me like the play part is an example from me the conversation of he just needs he just he doesn't have the reps on it right now it is from somebody else because it's a great point that was made to me in a conversation and I want to pass that on to you so the example I'm using like I said you got eight dudes on a line of scrimmage you know this team has been bringing more pressure against you than they do normally why because you're a rookie quarterback so they're going to try to heat you up they're going to try to pressure you right so any
the Kelly I command as a quarterback and listen I've watched enough football in my 44 years of life I've watched enough football we're sitting up here in the Tottenham hot spur press box right over my left shoulder I sat there and I remember looking at Marshall I said they're bringing everybody and eighth and said I get this ball out quick eighth and doesn't see it's he sees eight dudes on the line of scrimmage but the the connection between seeing the eight guys online of scrimmage how do I check out of it how do I shift protection how do I make sure that I have the thing right that's the part that takes time that's the part that takes experiences now getting sacked getting hit like that that's one of those experiences right and in the future what you hope and what they think how the I command as himself came to the podium and talked to us about after the game is next time when the giants do that that turns into oh we got eight guys on the line of scrimmage again okay hey guys let's shift our protection to my blind side let's make sure that one two three four five six seven on my blind side moving in they're all blocked up and I want this guy on the right side unblocked and if he comes then I've got a hot read and I got to get that
ball out or I want the middle guy like well whoever I'm comfortable with you let the middle guy come in and if he comes I know I can outrun him to the edge whatever it is right whatever that check is going to be Marcus Marriota makes that check which is why Louie on a rumo defense coordinator for the office folks doesn't bring that pressure package I guess Marcus Marriota eighth and Caliac Mannis he doesn't make that check where he's not likely to make that check unfortunately anything doesn't make that check he takes the sack and the wash manners have to put instead of getting a field goal which they really could have needed so again when I go back and I say Marcus Marriota stays in this game this he absolutely wins this game that is not an indictment of anything Caliac Mannis because he is in a situation where I mean Marcus Marriota has over a decade of experience compared to anything Caliac Mannis so where do the wash the commanders go from here where can they go from here is this a must win now coming in a week for we haven't even left the continent of Europe yet and we're going to talk about whether or not next week is a must win coming up next on today's up to a lot of commanders part of a lot of podcasts that work your team every day.

help.com slash locked on some of you will be surprised to hear me say this but week week five for the Washington commanders absolutely must win at home against New York Giants. Thanks again for making a locked on command is your first listen of the day every day I also wanted to thank you for heading over to wusa9.com where you can check out my written work covering your burgundy and gold listen I talked to some players in locker rooms some veteran players in locker room because I want to ask veterans this question because I already see the narrative coming out there week five back home New York Giants absolutely a must win and I will tell you this the overarching opinion the overarching feedback I got on that question was that it is a must win but it's not a must win because there one in three one veteran in the locker room told me one in three already happened I get the end of the day one in three already happened you can't do anything like that is cemented in the annals of history for for all the time for the future of this game the watch twenty twenty six watch commander started one in three period winning against New York Giants doesn't change that fact
winning against the new San Francisco 49ers doesn't change that fact beating the Seattle sea ox last week doesn't change the fact the watchman started this season one in three that is cemented so trying to go into the next week saying this is a must win because we lost this game against the cults that is never going to be effective from a competitors viewpoint that is never going to be effective that is never going to be the way that a competitor can look at this situation the what the reason they all said it is a must win is because every game in the national football league must win because you never know when it comes to December when it comes in early January and it comes to the peckney order for the playoff races all that kind of stuff you never know which wins you're going to need which wins you're not going to need it'll be easy you know when we get to the end of January it'll be easy to look back at the schedule say oh well this win if impacted this and that loss impacted this and all this other stuff but in the real moment I can't tell you what losing to the Indianapolis cults is going to do to the watchmaners playoff chances outside of the fact they obviously have a third loss to the seas like that's the
only thing I tell you is they have a third loss so that could potentially impact their playoff seating that's the that's the only definitive thing we can say coming out of this game but can I tell you that they only have three losses they're miss the playoffs no because we all know if this team goes 14 and three they're going to make the postseason right now the chances of them going on a 13 game win streak now with standing that's not the conversation that right but we're trying to keep this rooted in reality every coach every player every part of the personnel staff every spouse friend girlfriend boyfriend of anybody in this organization every single week is a must win for the true competitor that is the overarching opinion and message that I received from this team as far as playoff seating is concerned as far as playoff seating is concerned this there's only been four games played and yeah we can have the percentages of you know x percent of teams that start the season one and three make the postseason I got it we also have all the examples of teams that started oh and three and still go on to do really good things with season you also have the examples of teams start eight and oh and go on to do terrible things
with their season when the thing to remember is as as rare as some of these instances are they're all accomplished by human beings none of these things under these you know if it's 12% of team start one in three I don't know percentage of top my head 12% of teams go one in three start one in three make the postseason okay all 12% of those teams were staffed by human beings coached by human beings rostered by human beings going up against other human beings human beings are not infallible human being can be gotten the better of every single week so the wash the commanders can clean up some of the things that they're doing and get these things done that is the path to getting it done and I've been asked this question a lot like what's the risk we in this year's locker room and last year's locker room because that last year's locker room it'll be wrong I still like what we saw in last year's locker room from a personality standpoint but last year's locker room it was like look we know we're better we know we can do better we just got to focus on it and do it and get it done right this team locker room is more so we know we're better but we're not proving it and we're not doing it so we got to figure out why and we got to figure out how to fix it right last
year's was almost like we just know we're better than this so eventually we're going to get ourselves out of it it's almost like the equivalent of a baseball like we're in a slump so I'm gonna go up I'm just gonna keep swinging I'm gonna keep swinging and eventually I'm gonna find that ball and this will this will all be over that's kind of what last year's team is this year's team is more I gotta get in the batting cages I gotta watch tape on my swing versus this pitch I gotta give it my batting coach and work on this thing and I think that is going to be a more effective way to doing this now we go back to the health cycle of things right I was asked by a fellow media member does like does this team go see Jimmy Garoppolo is available and I think that if Jane Daniels is at all closer returning which I think obviously if he's not going on I or he's close to returning I think Jane Daniels probably plays against New York Giants to be 100% truthful Marcus Marriota how serious is his re-injured knee if it's not so serious that he's going on I or maybe even if you missed this a week again Nathan Caliagmanus came out here I will tell you like yes to watch him here lost this game but I don't look at this game and say Nathan Caliagmanus was the reason that they lost the game could he do some things better could he make some checks could he
see the defense a little bit better of course he could these are things that he's gonna get with experience again they're not things you can just download into his brain right is that enough for the watch players to not go out there and get a veteran to me I think it is I think it is this secondary very quietly today put together arguably the best game of the season that they've had right but here's the reason I'm going to tell you as a medium I'm right so I mean I gave you the competitors viewpoint of why yes every week it next week is your Giants is a must win it is absolutely a must win it's just not a must win that most of you are saying it's a must win for it's not a must win the most of us the media are saying it's a must win for it and it's not a must win most of the radio personalities you listen to say it's must win or national personality say that's must win so yes it's a must win but not for the same reason we did this before the beginning of the regular season right and look the watch commanders win lost total seven and a half so how do the watchman get above seven and a half wins we talked about five games this season the watch commanders absolutely should win and need to win to get past that seven win mark and I understand
some of your like bro over seven wins doesn't get you to play us we're just talking about over over-achieving expectations at this point right the New York Giants were on that list but the New York Giants were on that list twice this was not the New York Giants were out of team even with Jackson Dart even with Harbaugh even with Skataboo back healthy all that stuff the Giants were out of team that I looked at and said you can go one and one against this team I did say you can go one and one against Philadelphia Eagles we said you can go one and one against Dallas Cowboys and the Seahawks were a game that we did not put in that category of this is the game you should win so they win that game but Colts was a game this was a game that we said on Locktalk Marins this team needs to win in order to have a realistic shot of excuse me Zuni or expand exceeding that seven and a half win total they lose this game so to me just looking at it from that big picture standpoint you basically just gave away that Seahawks game and that hurts that hurts because that's you're stealing and that's why everybody felt good about so you so many Seahawks take care of business against Colts take care of business business against the Giants you got to steal one more and now you're
talking about sniffing double digits you just gave that back that's the that's the the painful part of that process is you just gave that win back so now you got to go in and that's why the New York Giants game is absolutely a must win because you can't give that one away now you're talking about you've got to beat the Niners the Rams you've got to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars you've got to beat these teams or else you are not only going to not exceed expectations you're actually going to threaten to underwhelmed or fall short of the expectations and that is when conversations start to happen of people losing their jobs and that of course is what we all like to avoid because we would much rather sit here and talk about winning football come to next time on Locktalk Marins again we will look at the state of this team a month into the NFL season four games down who are the Washington commanders I'm going to do my best to answer that question for you that's next time I appreciate you coming through for that episode coming through for this episode any other episodes and in between them if you need to find me please do so on Instagram at D Harrison underscore 82 and if you want more Lockdown commanders check out Lockdown commanders
