Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels was limited Wednesday as he works back from his left-elbow injury, but Marcus Mariota’s play has taken football urgency out of the return decision. Washington can let Daniels’ readiness determine when he plays while evaluating Frankie Luvu, Chig Okonkwo and the rest of a crowded injury picture ahead of the Indianapolis Colts.

Then, why David Blough must create better early-down answers, how Austin Ekeler and Rachaad White could make Washington’s offense less predictable, which depth players may be earning larger roles, and what the Commanders must do to keep Indianapolis’ run game from controlling Sunday in London.

Host David Harrison covers the the Commanders Commanders for the Locked On network and for WUSA9 as a digital beat reporter.

You are Lockdown Commanders, your daily podcast on the Washington Commanders. Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team, every day. Welcome inside today's episode of Lockdown Commanders. I'm your host, your guy on the ground, David Harrison and on to this episode, why the Washington Commanders' depth is becoming one of the defining stories of the season and what has to travel against the Indianapolis Run Game. The first witch injured commanders are actually getting closer to returning to play in what that means for quarterback Jayden Daniels. Make sure you're following and listening over on Amazon Music, so you never miss an

episode. And today's episode is brought to you by Lockdown Amazon Music. So we're going to do their Amazon Music, make sure you're headed over there. Injuries and the quarterback decision. We're going to do a mailbag midweek Wednesday episode here on Lockdown Commanders from beautiful London, England. And we have some really good questions here. And we're going to start it all off with Jayden Daniels, quarterback, driven league, franchise quarterback of the team, all that kind of stuff, stuff, suffered a second elbow dislocation in about four games time. So obviously a lot of conversation around him. The question generally has been, who is actually getting close to returning for the Washington Commanders, William, Vijay, Richard Scott, many more every day. There's all came through with some sort of version of basically that question. Jayden Daniels limited in practice on Wednesday with that left elbow injury. So he did fly to London. I did post a video of him practicing or getting warming up for practice. That is on my Twitter account, D Harrison 82.

If you want to go check that out, he is practicing. There is no confirmation that he's going to play. Dan Quinn essentially said they're going to take it through the week, just like he does every other injury. And they're going to see how it goes Thursday and Friday. We'll be really big days for quarterback Jayden Daniels Wednesday, mostly, basically a jog through type of practice. They landed in London, went to the hotel, checked in pretty much immediately went to practice. So as you can imagine, fatigue, that lag, all that kind of stuff, but they wanted to get some reps and get some meetings and things like that. So jog through status for that injury report. Sam Cosme, Nick Cross already ruled out for the week four game against the Indianapolis Colts because they didn't even travel with the team to London. So you don't got to worry about whether or not they're going to play because they're not going to place him. Cosme still in concussion protocol. Nick Cross with the internal injury being listed in illness, but it's the internal injury he suffered in the loss of the Dallas Cowboys. Still don't have a definite answer on what that is. And this probably by design, I don't know that we'll ever really find out, but we certainly don't know now nor doesn't necessarily matter what it is.

It's just an internal injury that's keeping him out of the game. Frankie Lovu, linebacker, limited in practice. So he is here in London, suffered a growing injury earlier in the season. And so he is kind of on the path to returning personally. I do believe that Frankie Lovu is going to play this weekend against the Indianapolis Colts. Let's see the Dan Quinn kind of talk about him kind of go through the answer on the injury report for him. I just kind of got the vibe, but there's just a better chance of Frankie's going to play really than anybody else. Full disclosure, I don't expect Jay and Daniel to play this weekend. I expect Marcus Marriota to be the starting quarterback. There has been an idea floated around the media group that perhaps Jayden dresses, but he's game day inactive, but he's the inactive third quarterback. So Marcus Marriota will be your starter. Ethan Caliac, Manus would be your backup. And then Jayden Daniels would be your emergency third quarterback, knock on wood. Should something happen to one or two, one or both those quarterbacks and then potentially he'd come in. But truthfully, depending on the flow of the game, like if Luke McCaffer is active, maybe he's the emergency quarterback.

You know what I mean? So there's a lot of different things that could happen there. Other players limited in practice on Wednesday, Nick Allegretti, Percy Butler, Javon Kinlaw, Chigga Conqua, who also here is obviously here in London, if he's limited in practice, and is on his way, hopefully back. I don't have a full kind of pulse on whether or not he's going to return this week or not, but obviously it's a promising sign that he's practicing it all. We'll see what the practice report again looks like on Thursday, Charles and many of you also limited. Lucas Patrick limited. Nick Robertson and Ben Sinett, all limited. And Nick Robertson was kind of the only one that I didn't know was going to be limited in some way, shape, or form, entering into the practice. He is listed with a knee injury, though I don't probably just like soreness. I don't necessarily, I don't really expect him to really miss the game or I don't view him as being in danger of missing the game again. We'll look Thursday, Friday at the updated practice reports and see if anything there. Chains, also got a question about Troy Ames, the cornerback, second year cornerback, everybody loves him. He's excited about him. Was in your last season, Mr. Russ of that year came back, had a day of training camp,

got injured again. We haven't seen him on the practice field since then. The question basically is how confident am I that he's going to be back in week five? I will say that I'm not confident. I don't really have conviction one way or the other. I'm not going to tell you, I'm not going to tell you, I'm not going to tell you, he is coming back in week five. He obviously on IR. This is the last week he has to miss. I did ask Dan Quinn about Troy last week. I'm going to court him what Dan Quinn said. It looked like he was quote unquote hitting the markers, doing some good things. We've seen him working out on the side field with the trainer, things like that. Certainly looks like he's in good spirits. Trey Ames does when we do get the chance to see him. And the best thing I can tell you is he doesn't seem like a guy who thinks he's going to miss a significant amount of time. That's the best thing that I can tell you, whether that's week five against the Giants, whether it's week six against the 49ers, which would be a long week, right? You get the Sunday home game against the Giants coming back from London. Then you have Monday night against San Francisco. Probably traveling Sunday and then the Monday night game. So a little bit more time for Trey into the by week. Truthfully, if he doesn't play against the Giants, do you bring him back from one game before

a by week? There's certainly a reason to do that. You get him to game and then obviously there's going to be some soreness after the game and all that stuff. You go right into your buy so that gives you the opportunity to treat it, react to it, all those types of things before you come back home. And you host, I think the Eagles, I think the Eagles is week seven, or week eight coming out of the by week. Or you let him sit another week, then you have the by week on top of this. You basically game two weeks of further rehab for the price of one, bringing back that week and match up. There's there's logic and there's validation in doing, in doing both. So I got a Trey Amos. I believe we'll be back before the end of October. I think it's probably the best thing I can tell you. But as far as whether or not I'm convicted, that he'll be back for the Giants game coming out of London. I can't really, I can't really go one way or the other with that. At this time, Jordan McGee, linebacker, he's also on IR. I think that he's probably in a position where he could come back soon after the four week period that he's supposed to miss to probably looking that after the by week for him. K-Tron Allen. Got a question about whether or not he's played since he was involved in that play.

That injured Sam Cosmie. So if you go back to the Sam Cosmie concussion, what happened is Sam is blocking. He ends up turning back towards the play, which according to, I think, Brian Baldinger on Twitter. If I'm not, if I'm not mis-correct, I believe it was Brian Baldinger on Twitter who said this is why offensive lineman are taught and never turned back towards the play. Sam Cosmie turned back towards the play. K-Tron Allen collides with him. Sam ends up with a concussion. Now he's in the midst of the second straight game. With that now, I was asked if K-Tron Allen has played a snap since that injury happened. K-Tron Allen played three more snaps in that game after the concussion happened. Did not play any offensive snaps against the CLLC Augs, but he did play 15 special team snaps against the CLLC Augs. Special team. Has he played offense since then, not since that game, which has been one game? Has he played? Yes. Do I feel like he's being punished for running in the Sam Cosmie? No, I don't get that feeling at all. And again, the important context. Wednesday was a jog through walkthrough. So participation levels need to be taken with the great assault when you read. The injury report. Next question.

Does Mark's Marriottas play give the commanders a freedom to be patient with Jay and Daniels and how much does the offense actually change between them? Combination of Ravi, Tia, Joy, VJ and Moritz came through with that question. I think Mark's Marriottas has obviously shown that the offense can function, not just as well, but can function well without Jay and Daniels. And they can certainly do certain things. And I think they did that against a very good defense. The Haynapolis Cole defense. Certainly not the same caliber as the CLLC Augs defense. And I think that Washington commanders, honestly, regardless of what Mark's Marriottas is doing, fortunately, he's done it well. But even if he did it poorly last week, that's not going to really do anything impact anything. And Jay and Daniels return. I think Jay and Daniels return is and always has been about his health and his viability and his long-term viability, not the urgency created by the performance or lack of performance for Marcus Marriottas or anything like that. When Jay and does come back, I do think there will be a little bit of management of his injury. But again, we've heard Dan Quince say over the years that they don't want any guys to

come back until they're fully able to be themselves. So even with that massive elbow brace on his arm, which again, if you've seen the video I posted on it, you've seen it. I think that unless Jayden can be Jayden in that thing, he's not going to be back. So hopefully for me, you know, medical advice would not be standing. I hope the Jayden is out there doing everything possible. He can't in that brace just to get used to that whole thing. So that's how we're starting off this mailbag up. So coming up Washington's third down problem against Seattle, actually started much earlier in Austin, Echler, could give Dave the blouse another option towards fixing that this weekend against the Indianapolis Coles here in London, England. That's coming up next on today's episode. A lot of on commanders part of blocks on podcast network, your team every day. And today's episode of blocks on commanders is brought to you in part by prize picks. Football is fully back. We're about to reach the end of the first full month, first four weeks of NFL football. Why I've been looking to step on digs all season long, all off season long since you joined the wash the players. I've been telling you I think he's going to be a target monster. He's proven to be exactly that didn't connect with Marcus Mario to as much as we bought or wanted him to against the Seattle Seahawks, but this is the Indianapolis Coles new opportunity. And also prize picks has injury protection. Washington doesn't need to stop running on first down, but it does need first down to become

productive again. Whether that answer is rushing quick passes, motion or personal variation, whatever it is, they got to get better on first down starting here in week four. Thank you for making a lot of time. I'm going to finish the first lesson of the day every day to the everydayers who come through for every single episode. Moving on with our male bag episode next question. Why did the Washington commanders keep putting themselves behind the sticks against the Seattle Seahawks? VJ came through with this question, right? And I think the issue wasn't as simple as just running on first down, right? I've seen a lot of people say that the commanders need to stop running on first down because it wasn't very effective. Put them in second along all those types of things. What it really was was repeatedly getting poor results on first down.

Now sometimes yes, that came on run plays, but also came on past plays, right? So it's not as simple as just saying, well, don't run as much and you'll have more success. Like if it was, it'd be a lot easier to just solve the problem. But the bottom line is just getting too many short gains and then marks Mary Odie even pointed out in his Wednesday press conference out here that when they did get positive gains in first down and have successful first down plays and bring up second and five, second and six, even whatever it is that they would have those illegal formation or legal shifts or false starts or you know, whatever penalty that turned a second and five into a second and 10 or even a second and 15 if you have a serious enough of a penalty. So it's not even just necessarily being successful on first down, but being successful in allowing that success to translate into second down in the first place to set yourself up with a convertible third down because you don't want to get in the third and long because third and long is the most predictable down in the national football league. So you definitely don't want to put yourself in that situation. So while we look at one for 10 to start the game against the Seahawks on third down, two for three down the stretch, you know, 13 for or three for 13 overall.

That's a terrible terrible number. No, no offense wants to be in that number. It's not necessarily just what happened on third down. It's what happened on first down before and second down before that. So we always say third down is the money down is the most important down all that stuff. But first and seconds will get you there, right? First size will get you to the door and the further away you are from the door, the harder it is to walk through and get in new set of down. So motion formation differences. First now, those can create favorable looks and every week's a little bit different. Right? Again, like I said, the Indianapolis Colts defense, not as well known as the Seahawks defense, but there are surely some things that the Indian apolis Colts defense will bring as a challenge to the washmakers offense that the Seahawks defense didn't necessarily bring. We got Zach Hicks of lots on Colts coming through for the next episode of Lockdown Commanders, crossover Thursday. So he'll kind of break down some of the things that the Washington Commanders will have to look forward to when facing the Colts this weekend to get more of that information. But I think the bigger question for David Blow here is when does commitment to balance, right? Dan Quinn praised him a lot for that balance and sticking to the run even though it wasn't getting a lot of yard and all that stuff because you want to keep the Seahawks

Colts defense on is then I get that and I think you get that, right? But when does the demand for balance become predictability? Like you're almost predictable in your balance of your offense, right? When does that happen? That's a good question for David Blow. Perhaps we'll see, but perhaps I'll ask him that question specifically tomorrow when we get at least his view of the answer on that. Next question, how should Austin Eccler and Rashad White fit together and can they improve the run game? Kind of goes hand in hand, right? Robin Mark came through with this question. So Austin Eccler officially made a member of the Washington commanders on Tuesday before the Washington mayor flew out here. It's a London and to make room for him, Leo Shnall linebacker was put on IR. We already knew he was going on on IR. He's going to miss the rest of the season. After suffering that neck injury, he did against the Seattle Seahawks and I don't necessarily think that in the immediacy of it, Austin Eccler and Rashad White have to fit together, right? I think Rashad White is probably going to miss this league in the game. He did suffer a shoulder injury against the Seattle Seahawks. He did end up coming back after suffering the shoulder injury to

finish the game and got that critical second to last third down conversion to help them ice the game and run the clock out. But during the game, you can get a shot, you can get a pain killer, you can do this, you know, you can come back toughness, adrenaline, all that stuff is pumped through your veins, right? After the game, especially days after the game, I kind of self kind of changed a little bit. I thought Rashad White will probably likely miss this game. Even if he doesn't miss this game, I expect him to probably be a little bit limited just because he is dealing with that situation. Austin Eccler comes in and essentially kind of spells him for right now. Right now, eventually, they will have to fit together. Obviously, so that is a question that has to get answered by I think just for this weekend alone, not necessarily. And as far as how does Austin Eccler, how does Rashad White, how do they combine, help make the run game better? Truthfully, I think more reps on it is going to make the run game better. I remember Lucas Patrick at Center, Nick Allegrette Wright guard. There's their first time they've done that in an active game all season long. The first time they practiced it was last Wednesday before the C-Aus game. So getting more reps, getting more time to work together, get to a flow, all that stuff. That's naturally going to improve the run game,

facing a defense that maybe is not necessarily a stout up front as the C-Aus C-Aus, that's going to improve your run game. Jocquery Cross-Camer, one more game is worth of reps seeing what work, seeing what doesn't work, learning lessons, coming away from it. That's going to make the run game better. Austin Eccler, he's fresh. He is coming off that Achilles injury, obviously, right? But as far as the season is concerned, he's fresh. He's another veteran, sees things good way, sees things his way, those types of things. That's going to help the run game. The three of them, really at the end of the day, what you get, especially if you can continue to get build to develop as a pass blocker and a pass catcher, as you have three backs that essentially all kind of do the same thing. They're capable of doing the same things. All three of them can run between the tackles, run outside, catch the ball, pass block, right? They do them to certain different levels, certainly. They do them differently. What you do is you give yourself three bites of the apple, find them out. Which running back matchup against those defense is the one that gives us the best opportunity to be successful down and down out. That's how they succeed. The real odd man out potentially in this situation, obviously, is K-Tron Allen. Look, day three,

rookie running back. Bill burst on the scene for a day three, rookie running back, but that's not going to be every day three, rookie running back. K-Tron Allen, maybe the odd man out there, but he's got time to develop, to prove himself and all that kind of stuff. Next question, how many defensive players earned a larger role that was come through, asked by Richard? I think Tyler Owens is kind of the clearest name that comes to mind when you ask this question, obviously, especially teams of short and air, got a lot of attention after the first game of the season, continues to get attention. People are now, it's awesome because I'm getting text from Commander's fans. I never really got text about special teams play other than the returns. But now I'm getting text from every day, or club members, Commander's fans, who are like, man, did you see Tyler Owens? It's a two yard punt return, maybe, or a fair catch even. Did you see Tyler Owens put that guy on his back and did it and I love it because you guys were starting to watch more of the game. As you do, you'll just become a more well-rounded holistic NFL fan. I love that. I don't know how close Tyler Owens is to really get more playing time. Percy Butler got more time on the defense last week. Now, if Percy Butler's injury

takes him out of the game this week, which I don't anticipate it will, but obviously it's certainly possible that maybe Tyler Owens will get more burn there because of that. But as far as earning more playing time, I think you just consistently kind of do the things that keep you around, right? Things that like Kay Medron and Dilly, he didn't get on the field a lot as a defender, or at all as a defender until last week. But when they put him out there, they didn't, you know, sanitize this role. They didn't put bubble wrap on say, okay, everybody, let's circle around Kay and let's make him feel better. No, like they put him in there, he said, go to your job, and they had confidence he could do it, and he went out there, and he did it, right? So, I think Tyler continues to kind of put himself in that realm where it's not that we're going to force you on the field, but if we have to put you on the field, we're not going to feel terrified that you're out there. Next up, injuries are forcing the wash manor's depth to showcase itself more than we expected it to this season. But some of those replacements are being shown. This team actually has usable depth getting deeper into the depth conversation coming on next on today's episode of Lots on Cmander's part of the Lots on Podcast Network your team every day.

It's keeping the Washington commanders having to redesign their process simply become because one player is unavailable. Thanks again, opportunity into today's episode of lots on commanders depth has taken a front seat

for the Washington commanders this season. As we look ahead to the Indianapolis cold match up this weekend, we're going to talk a little bit more about that on top of what we just talked about to end the last segment. The question you're coming from joy is whether or not Washington's depth has become one of the defining stories of the season. And last year, right, it really became the defining story of the season. Even though the defining story of the season really was while they missed Jay and they missed Terry, that in turn is the story of depth because if you have depth to step up to help you fill in for those injured stars, then you're not talking about missing the stars. You're on about look at how well these guys are stepping up. So I think they're the same family of story, but this year what's happening is the depth players are stepping up and they're doing good things for the Washington commanders. Not granted, it's only been one win and three tries, right? And it's only been one game for like quarterback Marcus Mariotta, for example, things like that. So it's a small sample size still. We'll continue to evaluate this as we go, but the question that comes in today, which means we're going to evaluate it based on what we've seen today.

And obviously, Marcus Mariotta is that cleanest example of a backup stepping in and keeping the operation flowing the way that it was before he had the step in, right? Because Jay and Daniel, they think Jay and probably would have been a little bit more efficient than 11 for 19. Had he played against the Seattle Seahawks, but that's a really tough defense man. Like, is he going to get, you know, double the yards, Marcus Mariotta? God, is he going to throw six touchdowns instead of three? I don't think so, right? I think you're still going to end up with like 220, 230, maybe passing yards, maybe like four or five more completions. And then you'd probably hopefully end up with the same amount of touchdowns. But Marcus Mariotta really did come in. And while the efficiency numbers weren't necessarily as efficient, because that's what efficiency numbers are, still a very solid performance. And I think obviously showed that that potential is there. Now we talk about backups, right? Sam Cosmigot's injured, Nick Aligrette, essentially becomes the backup right guard, fills in that spot. Lucas Patrick, who came into the team a couple weeks ago, becomes that backup center and steps up. So clearly, just like you, just like me, like none of us really thinking Matt Goldman's ready for the spotlight like that. So they protect him. They keep him learning in the

background, but they bring in a veteran. Lucas Patrick to come and step in and do what he needs to do. He does well, right? The old offensive line doesn't look at a sink. They're not just letting free rushers come in every snap, right? Like they weren't perfect. Certainly some things that can be cleaned up, but they looked very, very solid enough to continue the flow of the offense moving forward. I would think that the tight ends, probably the biggest area where you can kind of say, okay, the flow of what the tight end room was doing before checking a car was injury, not really there. So I think that's the spot where you kind of say, okay, that's where the depth has to concern you. Now the good news is, as long as you're not needing to rely on that depth with watch, which watchman's offense is being able to avoid having to do so far, it's not going to kill you, right? But now and not going to this doesn't happen, but like, let's say you lose a receiver or two, and now you still don't have chig. Now you've got to rely on that tight end room to be a bigger contributor. Now I think is when you become a problem. So for me, on offense, that's where I kind of go is and that kind of shows you maybe a little where the roster construction needs to come in, right? So John Bates, Benson, Colson, Yankoff, where's their future? I think Colson,

probably going to be safe around here for a few years, or he's not going to demand big money, but he's going to have a role on special teams and as a depth tied end. But I wouldn't be surprised for say, like if next year the commanders go tied in and save the third round and try to get a guy that they can grow behind ChidConco, who may have a little bit of an immediate role, but also be a contributor if they need to step up a little bit more. So just kind of food for thought, the D-line is obviously really deep. The linebackers, the depth so far stepped up, including again, Kane Modrano, but now Kane also knows that he had to back-to-back plays at one point during that game where he missed really bad tackle. So he needs to get better as well. The interception kind of wipes it all away and the win helps people forget about it, right? But it's still there. It's on tape. He knows it. This isn't news to him. And so he still got rooms, try to clean up. Juan Martin did pretty solid work stepping in there, you know, for Nick Cross, Percy Butler with his reps that he got. Nobody looked completely blatantly at a place. And even Fabian Moro, right, got more work as the outside corner kind of rotating in with Rissoul Douglas as they move Mikey St.

Rischel into the nickel position, which by the way, the end-win told us on Wednesday. Sounds like it's a permanent move. Mikey St. Rischel basically is your nickel, which means it's not that he's being pulled off the field. It's until the offense presents a personal grouping that requires the nickel on the field. That's when Mikey will get on the field. And Zach Hicks will talk more about what that could mean, facing the Indianapolis Colts. Spoiler alert, it made him happy to hear that Mikey St. Rischel is the nickel for the Washington commanders. Question. Last question coming up here for this episode. Richard came through. What does Washington have to do to keep the Indianapolis Colts run game from controlling this game? Yeah, Jonathan Taylor, very, very good running back. And the wash man's have really faced three solids to very good running backs. One elite running back. And then one, I think good running game. Right? Seikoan Barkley obviously is elite. I think that Javonte Williams is solid to very good. I think Jonathan Taylor is elite. And I think that, you know, Jadarian price for the C-OX is going to be good. I think their overall rushing attack is good,

right? Not great, but it's good. So this will be kind of the second elite, you know, matchup that they've had. I think that just just contain it, contain it. Right? Don't let Jonathan Taylor become the story of the game. Don't let Jonathan Taylor run away with it. Kind of like what Jackson Smith and Jigba, look, Jackson Smith and Jigba, they're in there at the end of the fourth quarter to run away with the game. Fortunately, because the two converted third down to the end of it there, never gave the ball back to the Seikoan's opportunity to cement that. But so as a defense, they did enough to not let JSN completely take over. And I think you do that against Jonathan Taylor, right? Maintain your gap discipline, get some interior pressure up the front as much as you can, tackle cleanly, right? That's where improvements like K-Midrown need to come in. Although, like I said, I think Loubue, Frank Loubue is coming back with this game. So sunny and Frankie can fit run, fill those fits. Well, tackle strong, Juan Martin get up in there, Revo get up in there, do those types of things. I think that you can contain Jonathan Taylor enough, force the ball into Daniel Jones's hands, Daniel Jones, five turnovers in first three games this season has not looked all that sharp.

Alex Pierce will not be available in this game because he's on IRF and he and Apple is called Joshua Downs. He's obviously the receiver that you got to worry about.
