Dan Quinn owns the Washington Commanders' clock-management failure that ended their 27-27 overtime tie with the New York Giants without a potential game-winning field goal attempt. Jayden Daniels and David Blough share responsibility, but the mistake falls on the head coach first and is serious enough to raise legitimate questions about Quinn's future.
Then, how Washington blew a 14-point fourth-quarter lead as Jameis Winston completed 76.5 percent of his passes with two touchdowns over the final 11 minutes, and why presnap penalties, squandered scoring opportunities and the disappearance of defensive disruption made this tie feel worse than a loss.
Host David Harrison covers the the Commanders Commanders for the Locked On network and for WUSA9 as a digital beat reporter.

So we witnessed on Sunday afternoon going into the evening with a straight up fireable offense. You are Lockdown Commanders, your daily podcast on the Washington Commanders. Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team, every day. Welcome inside today's episode of Lockdown Commanders. I'm your host, your guy on the ground, David Harrison, and on today's episode, why pre-snap penalties and squandered scoring opportunities continue to turn into the same problems every single week and how a defense of control, James Winston, throughout the majority of the week five game against New York Giants failed to disrupt him and ultimately
gave up two touchdowns and gave up the lead. But first, while the Washington Commanders final moments, game clock management failures land squarely on head coach Dan Quinn before anybody else. And why I can't even argue about all the narratives and all the job security questions that the mistakes that happened at the end of this game create. Make sure you're following a listing on Amazon music so you don't miss an episode and today's episode is brought to you by Fandall. Make this your most rewarding season ever with the Fandall Rewards Club every week. Check out the Fandall app to see what's waiting for you. I don't know that head coach Dan Quinn gets fired after this game. I don't know if it's going to happen. I don't know if it's not going to happen. I'm not going to have this moment in time, but I can tell you this that if it were to happen. I would not have many legs to stand on to try to say why it shouldn't have happened or why it shouldn't happen or haven't argued with somebody who says that it should happen after this game. And it pays me to say that quite honestly because I have a good connection with Dan Quinn, but I also have a lot of respect for Dan Quinn, which is why I have that good connection with them is because I respect the way that he does business.
I believe in the messages that he's selling to his guys. And I believe in the way that he runs the organization and the coaching staff. And I think they have the right coaches in place, at least from an overall standpoint. Certainly, maybe there's some position coaches here or there that could be upgraded and all those things. But I leave that to them because I don't get to see those position coaches every day. So I don't have any little conversations. But by, by far, this is one of the better run teams that I have covered in my years, covered in the National Football League. I've been doing this in 2015. I've been doing this as James Winston's rookie season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneer. And I've seen some very dysfunctional teams. I've seen some very dysfunctional coaching staffs in Tampa here, right? Just just in general. And I believe in this when I do. But in every business, in every business, there is a zero tolerance item. Or there are zero tolerance offenses that cannot be committed. And in the National Football League, in the game of football, this, what we saw happen on this field Sunday afternoon is one of those zero tolerance
types of actions, right? And truth be told, not a zero tolerance action in the National Football League is met with a release or a trade or a firing. But this is just one of those egregious things that you don't expect to see on a football. So I don't remember seeing, again, I've been covering this game since 2015. So we're going on over a decade here. I don't remember ever seeing a game and the way this one has ended. I've seen some, some, some sacks and games instead of throwing the ball up things like that. But I don't recall ever seeing a game like this. So where does the blame really lie? So ultimately the responsibility lies with head coach Dan Quinn, right? We talked about this before every day. As you remember having these conversations with me, there's a different swing blame and responsibility. Sometimes blame and responsibility lands in the same place. Sometimes blame and responsibility don't land in the same place. At the end of the day, this is not only the responsibility of the head coach, which is Dan Quinn. But it's also the blame of the head coach, Dan Quinn. Dan Quinn took that squarely those chests in front of us in the press conference after the game. And look, I've talked a lot to Dan Quinn. I've been around Dan Quinn a lot. You could tell how affected it was towards him or how affected he was by these moments
and by this moment and having to get up there and have this conversation. You could tell how much it bothered him walking off the field. If you're on YouTube, you see the YouTube thumbnail of him in the surrender cobra. Nobody wants to be in that position and just kind of shows you how impactful this really was. Dan Quinn's not running from. He's not hiding from. In fact, he told us this was not on Jaden Daniels. This was on him. However, this is very much also on Jaden Daniels. That's just going down the line here. It's very much still on Dan Quinn. It's also on Jaden Daniels. It's also on David Blire. I think all three of these guys have to own their part of the conversation, have to own their part of the mistake that was made on the field. And truth be told, I came into this conversation. I came into crafting this conversation for this episode, saying this is squarely on Dan Quinn and nobody but Dan Quinn. You gotta let your quarterback know that there's no time out. You gotta let the court. You gotta make sure the coordinator, the quarterback, all of a sudden you're the CEO head coach. Your job is the overall game management of the strategy of the plan of the game plan. That is your responsibility. But here's the thing that we've come to learn since the game ended.
It was communicated. So Dan Quinn himself, as he sent up there and says, this is not on Jaden Daniels. This is on me. As he's saying this, he tells us this last, that last play that you saw, the last play where Jaden Daniels takes the snap. Stumbles right from the snap, looks to his left, ends up tucking the ball, running, going down as the clock is running. No time out, it's left on the clock. Aaron left on the board and no time to get the ball spiked before the clock runs out to lead Drew Stevens come out and try to win a game winning field goal. Dan Quinn shares with us. It's supposed to be, it's supposed to be a quick out, which was Benson and on the left side of its open, throw the Benson. It bends in, it grabs its prints out of bounds, stops the clock. You get Drew Stevens on the field or it's supposed to be a clock play. It's supposed to be a clock play. So either way, the plan is that it's supposed to be there. That's gotta be communicated, Dan Quinn says. That's gotta be communicated. It's not on him, that communication part is on him. Here's the thing though. And then Jaden Daniels comes to the podium and says, it's gotta be communicated to the offense, starts from the top down, starts with me. Okay, it certainly sounded a lot like Jaden Daniels was trying to tell us that it wasn't communicated, the situation wasn't communicated appropriately.
That's kind of what I walked away from it from and truthfully it didn't really kind of sit right with me. However, here's the things that really kind of bothered me. We talked to Chris Paul in the locker room and he's asked directly, was the time out situation communicated before that play? He said, yes, the time out situation communicated in the huddle. Okay, so the time out situation is communicated in the huddle. Who communicates that in the huddle? The quarterback is Jaden Daniels communicated to the rest of the offense. We got no time out. Okay, we know this. Deami Brown asked in the locker room what happened on that play and says, we didn't clock it fast enough. So the wide receiver on the field knows that the place supposed to be a clock play. This is supposed to be a stop the clock play. Deami Brown doesn't have a communicator in his helmet. So where does he get that information from? He gets it from the quarterback, which means to me that the quarterback was briefed in the headset on the time out situation and on the fact that this is a kill the clock play. So Jaden Daniels has to own more of this than I think he is in the immediate aftermath
of it. And Jaden Daniels has to own more of it than Dan Quinn. I applaud Dan Quinn for trying to say none of this is on Jaden. All of this is on me. No, it's not on all of it on Dan Quinn because you're the quarterback of the football team. You're the leader bottom line. We talked about this for again. Everyday is your remember this quarterback to the team are leaders of the team. Whether you're an actual leader or you're not you are a leader of the team. The team goes the direction you go. And if Jaden Daniels communicated time out situation, if he was communicated, this is a kill the clock play, which he was because he communicated it to Chris Paul that this was a no time out situation. He communicated to Deami Brown that this is a kill the clock play. And Jaden Daniels failed to execute the own the message that he delivered to his team from his coordinator from this coaching staff. So it's not all on Dan Quinn. It's all responsible. Dan Quinn is fully 100% responsible. But Jaden Daniels as much as the math doesn't work, also 100% responsible for not executing this play. And I remember sitting right here in this press box with a lot of commanders fans in this stadium when Jaden and lost focus and fumbled a handoff to Jakory Cross the American
Chicago Bears ultimately led directly to a game winning field goal. Kick by Jake Moody for the Chicago Bears. That was just one of several moments that led to 2025 NFL season down the crapper. Jaden Daniels has to own his focus. I'm a little bit disappointed to be point high so that he didn't do it tonight. I don't know. Maybe he was coached up not to do it. Maybe hey, Dan Quinn's going to fall in the sword. I don't know what the situation is. But the end of the day when we come back Wednesday, man, Jaden's got to own that part of the conversation because again, if Deami Brown doesn't know that it's a clock play and Chris Paul doesn't know that the timeout situation is briefed in the huddle unless the person briefing the huddle, Jaden Daniels is briefing that conversation. So to me, again, Dan Quinn fully responsible, Jaden Daniels has got a very good amount of this conversation as well. But while the defense came up with a huge play late, this whole situation doesn't absolve them of what came up because coming up here, Washington had James Winston under control for most of the afternoon. And then the fourth quarter arrived and the disruption disappeared and a 14 point lead evaporated. And then next on today's episode of Lockdown Commanders part of the Lockdown Podcast.

And James Winston had completed fewer than 56% of his passes up until that moment from that point forward. He completed more than three quarters of his remaining passes through two touchdowns and the Washington commanders couldn't produce a single negative play to throw him off the mark. Thank you for making a lot of time. I'm going to first listen up the day every day. Thank you to those of you who continue to join the everyday club. The commanders were out score 24 to 15 and the second half here in Northwest stadium in Land over Maryland in a week five loss. Look, it's a tie. I'm calling this a lot. This is a loss in my book.
There's no other way to really paint this thing up to touchdown with 11 minutes left in this game. Give up a nine play touchdown drive. Give up a 10 play touchdown drive during which Jane Daniels or Jane Daniels, James Winston threw just four incomplete passes. Meanwhile, he completed 11 passes. Two of those being touchdown passes include one on four down and from the start of the commanders, 2027 27 27 tying us New York Giants to 11 minutes left in the game quarterback James Winston completed just 50% 56% of his passes. He had 82.6 pass rating from 11 minute mark left in the four quarter on completed 76.5 of his passes to touchdown had a pass rating of 139.6. You talk about a script flipping a table turning. You've never seen it happen like it happened on this field as dramatically now. I think that that is a big part of what's been going on with the Washington. We're going to talk next about some of the most troubling parts being some of the patterns
that we've been seeing from this Washington commanders team as we've gone through this season. Really some of the going back to even last season. But to me, that defense fading down the stretch. We talked to it around paying after the game. We talked to Amy Robertson after the game. We talked to Frankie Louis after the game. Talk to Jeremy Reeves after the game. The message is usually the same publicly. Now what they're saying behind closed doors, obviously they're going to try to keep behind closed doors. But publicly what's being said is we've got to come out there in the second half the way we come out in the first half. We've got to come out there and be as aggressive. We've got to come out there and be decisive and do all these things. But at the end of the day, just the plain ugly truth of it is, this Washington commander's defense has not had the teeth that it has in the first half in the second half against opponents. We saw it against the Indianapolis Colts just last week in London where they come out in that number one or not number one, but high ranked defense, running defense. Indian national football league comes out and stifles Jonathan Taylor puts the ball in the hands of Daniel Jones. And for the first half from the most part, it worked.
It worked really, really well. The washmaring defense got to take away as early as they able to get off the field, gave you off as an opportunity to try to put points on the board, even with eighth and caliac manus and they're coming in for the injured Marcus Marriota. But then in the second half, as the game went on, you see that defense just start to fate and start to wane and Jonathan Taylor starts to get bigger chunks and bigger chunks. But it's come to light essentially that this is not an operation that just benefits from an offense that will control the clock and have more plays in the other offense and do all these things. These are things that we pointed to in the first three weeks of the season where even as the team is losing some of these games, losing obviously two of the first three, we can point to these things and say, hey, these are promising signs. Washmaring's offense is running X amount of plays more than their opponents are. They're controlling the clock. They're having more time of time of possession. And the opponents are in the defense as responding by getting off the field and getting some takeaways as of week three, obviously not in the first two weeks and all these other things. But when you see the situation continue to morph and continue to go on to where the
defense as the game is going on, it's not just that if the offense is controlling the clock, if the offense is staying on the field longer than their opponents, that the defense is benefiting from it. No, this defense needs it. This defense needs it. And tonight to be quite honest with you, kind of look like a situation where everybody thought it was just going to happen. Like, yeah, I really thought it was, like, listen, I'll be completely honest with you. I'm sitting in the press box eating my chicken tenders and saying, okay, second win in the season. Washmaring's about to go two and three. The Philadelphia Eagles lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Dallas Cowboys lost on Thursday night to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They're both two and three. So the washmaring's about to be in three way tie for second place. New York Giants about to be three and two. One game ahead of everybody else. First place, NFC East is wide open. Let's make this thing a party. And I think most people in the stadium were thinking the same thing. I saw a lot of really happy commanders fans. I saw some also happy Giants fans. And then, like I said, nine play drive, James Winston goes down field one incomplete pass. One incomplete pass, the entire nine play drive saw some sloppy tackles and missed opportunities, things like that. What we didn't see from wash the commander's defense that we did see in the first half,
no sacks, no tackles for losses, no big P.B. Use, no takeaways, obviously. These are all things that the washmaring's defense. It's very jekyll and hide, right? It's very jekyll and hide. And in the first half, you get, which one do you want to consider the evil, the evil, the more effective that you have the one who comes up with the magic potion, you have the one who turns into the beast. So whichever one you want to call that, you got, you got the more effective defense in the first half, then the second half, you got the defense that just the way that I'm putting it here, no teeth, no teeth in the second half defense for the washmaring's. Lastly, they were asked, did you get tired? Is that part of the problem where you get tired or you're wearing down in the second half? We get told no, they're not wearing down. That's not what I think is the key thing. Then we hear Doronta Jones come to the podium on Thursday, before this giants game talking about some of the conditioning and talking about doing all these things. We hear Dan Quinn talk about crazy conditioning, crazy shape that they came in and training camp. I don't think it's necessarily physical conditioning. I don't think it's like they got tired physically. I think it's mental. I think mentally as they continue to go on these games, some of these mistakes start to
just kind of duplicate. And it takes one guy, talked about this before, the defense operates as an 11-man unit and it just takes one person to mess the whole thing up for all of the other 10 guys. And James Winston, with the New York Giants office, we're finding out one guy. And look, they continue to pick on Mikey St. or so. Listen, I think Mikey had a great game from a special team's perspective. He almost got his hands on four or five different field goal kicks in this game alone. And I understand almost as an account, you're talking about trying to block field goals, all that kind of stuff. But for a guy who hasn't done a lot of special teams and done a lot of this kind of stuff, it's encouraging to see that he's one putting the effort out there to get in close. He had a really big kickoff stick, things like that. And he did make some decent defensive plays as well. He was in really good coverage on elite neighbors. Touchdown, unfortunately, was a touchdown, but he was in right there on the hip. I mean, it's contestant catch. And this is about the best you can try to do in that situation when you have such a receiver as elite neighbors, where a numb field had a really big stick on a third down earlier in the game, right? But ultimately, every single time this team gets into the second half, we see this defense
just start to to to to to fate start to wear down almost almost let us live start to wear down and start to fade down to the stretch. And it's absolutely troublesome. Uh, it's again, Jay Miss Winston goes from cleaning less than 56% of his passes and cleaning over 76% of his passes in two drives alone and boom, just like that, the wash of managers give up two score lead with 11 minutes left in the game and up top. If you decide, okay, it's called a tie, but end up losing this game that as far as I'm concerned, this is lost. But that's just the tip of the iceberg because that is the most troubling part from this game for me is different week, different opponent, but same pre stat mistakes, same wasted opportunities and same failure to finish because not for nothing guys. This is the fifth game this year. This is the fifth game this year that we can say the wash of managers could have won if. But they keep committing if and the ifs keep being self inflicted, we're going to dive into more of the ifs that happen here in week five coming up next on today's episode of locks on commanders part of the locks on podcast network your team every day.

We're going to check out my written work, cover your Washington commanders as well. We'll I'll be writing more about this for Monday morning, Monday afternoon run on wsa9.com. Perhaps the most disturbing part of the week five loss again. The way that that game ended absolutely just in my opinion, unforgettable, absolutely just just just just zero tolerance type of stuff. I mean, that kind of stuff cannot happen in the national football league. But perhaps most disturbing part, honestly, about moving forward is that whether it's a tie or it's a loss again, I just call it a loss, right? It's worse than a loss. It's the same thing we've seen all season long, right? Once it's recurrent, twice as a coincidence, three times a pattern. This is five time. It was four times technically, but it's four times this season.
The same things are coming back to bite this Washington commanders team, pre-snap penalties, stalling out on scoring opportunities, the inability to stop opponents once the momentum shifts. It's like a price fighter getting in the ring and it might take them, it might take their opponent five rounds to hit them in the job. But once they hit them in the job, man, that dude does not know how to take that punch and does not come back swinging. Pre-snap penalties kept putting the washmairs offence behind schedule second quarter, second quarter, New York Giants 9 yard line, washmairs face second in goal from the nine yard line. From there, they commit back to back fall starts penalties. Do you go from second in goal to nine, the second in goal of the 14, the second in goal of the 19 yard line? Then you end up with a 28 yard field goal. You get all the way down to the nine yard line on this drive and you end up with a 28 yard field goal later in the second quarter. Wash commanders commit another fall start penalty on third and sixth, turn that into a third in 11, next play, you get one yard and you end up punching the ball. You're in a third and third and sixth is not third and short, right? But it's third and manageable. Third and 11 is third and long. Third and 11 is a guarantee pass and over time, washmairs have fourth and five, the Giants
46, your near field goal range, delay a game penalty, turn into a fourth and 10. That one was more intentional trying to draw the team off sides, but honestly, man, like you're more likely to draw your own guys off sides, right? It's just, so it's just kind of part of the comedy at Barrier, right? These aren't execution losses that are caused by the opponents winning their matchup. These aren't things that the opponent is doing to you. And in the national football, you have an opponent over there that's trying to stop you from doing what you're trying to do. You have officials that are going to make really bad calls from time to time. You've got weather. You cannot do these things that only stack the deck against you even more and the washmairs keep on doing this. They keep changing their own down in distance before the opponent even has to step up and make a play. They also repeatedly, and part of that is because what we just talk about, they keep settling instead of separating in games where they actually have opportunities late in the first half of washmairs defense, created an amazing scoring opportunity. Caleb on chase on strip sack. Of quarterback James Winston Tim settle, recoverable the giant 28 yard line and advanced into the 27.
The washmairs take over already in field goal range. The defense gave you a field goal. Your job is often to turn that field goal into a touchdown. The offense gained five total yards. They netted five yards from that point on and kicked a 40 yard field goal against honestly, one of the worst defenses in the national football league. Two drives, specifically stand out to me. You get the ball at your own 47 yard line. Yeah, you're on your own side of field, but you're on your own 47 yard line. You're like 15 yards away from the juice, Steven's field goal opportunity and you get the ball to New York, the giant 27. We just talked about that. You come away at the total of three points on those two possessions. Absolutely. And it's just part of the trend. Where we go back to London. And I even tax the everyday club this during the game. I said, hey, six, six, six, nothing, six three, whatever was at one point in time. Like this feels a little bit eerie and it feels a little bit eerily similar to something we just saw last week, late in the game. We call it fading on the defensive side. You know, that's, that's putting it nicely. But on that first drive, 10 yards, five yards, 21 yards, 12 yards. Now, eventually, you actually do get to third and 15.
And on third and 15, you give up a seven yard completion of four to four down trial. Okay. 17 yard touchdown from James Winston, Isaiah, likely. The second touchdown drive that they gave them the fourth quarter, six yard game, six yard game, three yard game, 16 yards, giving up on third and seven, seven yards, 14 yards and the 17 yard touchdown on Blake neighbors. No decisive plays, no negative plays. The giants covered 72 yards in just over three minutes on that second drive to tie the game up. I think it's coaching mistake. Honestly, the coach Harbaugh on the giant sideline might have made tonight is taking the ball out of James Winston's hands in overtime. You put the ball on Kim Scataboo's hands who go scum doubles. I'm a proud son double guy myself and I love me some Kim Scataboo. But you put the ball on Kim Scataboo's hands thinking he's going to secure the ball. He's going to run the clock out. He's going to run the clock down. We're going to get into the field goal, you know, closer field goal range. And we're going to make this game win the field goal and go home to New Jersey with the win. And he fumbles the ball.
But James Winston shows all the evidence of the world that he's he's starting to ball out against his commander defense. And perhaps the biggest mistake that Harbaugh made was not letting him finish it. I don't know, man, but just a comedy of errors here tonight. Again, I don't know if Dan Quinn is going to get fired. I don't know if Dan Quinn is not going to get fired. Truthfully, I'm very curious to see how this team bounces back in this because this is the kind of loss. Like bottom line is, let's just be real here. This is the kind of loss that get a road of football team. This is the kind of loss that get a road of football team. I would like to think this football team is better than that. I would like to think this locker room is better than that. I would like to think this coach is better than that. But this is the type of game that kind of rode a football team from the inside out. We will see what happens. We will be back Monday to talk about it all. We will have a Zoom in the afternoon with Dan Quinn. I will be on side, Nashville and Virginia for Dan Quinn's W USA 911 on one with Marcel Kramsky. I'm assuming that we are still doing that one on one with Dan Quinn. Next time I'm locked on commanders, it's unbelievable to say this. There is actually an unnearned silver lining coming out of week five.
Unnearned. Lissada Washington commanders created silver lining, but there is a silver lining coming out of week five, believe it or not. I'm not going to talk about tonight because I'm on the mood for any silver lining. Zernder or otherwise. We will talk about that next time I'm locked on commanders.
