I'm gonna tell you what you need to see. Welcome into the fourth quarter program. Tavibo, Infra seren Petro. We will talk to Kevin Harlan a little bit. But right now, we will tell you what you need to know, what you need to know right now, is it is a beautiful night for some Friday night lights. What a night to go out and watch high school football. If you're gonna go watch, there's big games ever you're gonna be going and working at the game, right? You go. I'm doing a ZPA voice of Sean Emission East. It's East against Gardner Edgerton. So, Petro V. Petro V. Drovella. There we go. At Sean Emission North. At Sean Emission North. Yeah, right up the road. I know a lot of people. Three or four home games are there. The other ones are. Bernie and Pius, big one tonight. I was texting with a buddy.

His kid goes to Pius, Steven's kids. Go to Pius. That's it. Carnies really, really good. That's going down. Rob Manning, nephew kicks for Lisa. I'm at their playing West, Lisa. I'm at West tonight. But what a beautiful. I mean, this is what we've been wanting for weeks. And we finally got a beautiful night for high school football. And for some reason, when you walk out in the smell that's in the air this time of year, the first thing I think about is high school football. Maybe the second thing might be baseball playoffs. But going to high school football games, that kind of crisp, that first note of the crispness of the air, you're going, I can hear the band. And that's because there's one. We have one we occasionally hear. It's about 400 feet here in the morning. Give her enough. Hurricane just texted. Brooks and Dunn playing a night at Morton, too. So there you go. What a night to be at Morton amp at Theater watching Brooks and Dunn, boot scooting, buggy. At the Salt House. Neon Moon. All those. Really, I'm boot scooting, buggy. You can take it. But I like Neon Moon a lot.

I didn't even think some worships for it. I can't hear that. I like that song. I got the buddies who carry Okie that one. I've got faves to do. I'm some of my friends that play in a country band. Brian Hurd, Darren. Brian Hurd, Darren, Chumley, Phil Van Dill, band I go see him every once in a while. They play Neon. They got Neon. And Darren sings it on the drums and back. Yeah, so it's a nice night for that. Whether you're going to Brooks and Dunn, or if you're going to watch some high school football, looks like some a beautiful day in Lawrence and Columbia tomorrow as well. They're both home case. State doesn't play. The chiefs and raiders is not here. It'll be perfect conditions inside a legend as they play there. And let's play a little chief sound Curtis. Speaking of that. Trace Smith was at the podium today. You know, they've really run the ball a lot better. Wasn't great last week. But even their off week, better than what they were getting last week on their best week. So he was asked how he's seen the run game impact their offense so far. Yeah, I think just having a great running back room and schematically getting things going with the run game just allows our offense to be that much better.

And definitely wears down, wears down defenders and adds a level unpredictability as well. And they're not really anticipating pass every player or anything like that. You keep them on. You keep them on their toes, but also you wear them out. So you don't necessarily get their best Russian impression into it. Can you tell that? I mean, it's almost palpability. That is, you know, they're not on their heels, but they're guessing more than they have. Yeah, just not just team off every single time. You might have some guys, you know, just solely there at a Russian pass here. And they don't really play the run, but just in general, you know, I mean, just keeping the defense honest and jolt what they present terms of fronts, pressures, et cetera. Trace Smith there talking about the run game. One of the things that has helped the run game is Calil Benson's done a nice job filling in. He was known as more of a run blocker to begin with as opposed to a pass protector. And they've done a nice job there. I mean, Benson, it's still not been easy for him to do this. But it's been okay. There hasn't been anything awful that's happened so far. Started to look a little awful. Started to, but still, I mean, you remember those games a couple of years ago when they were putting Wanyamoras

out there, Kings of Suimata, and I mean, there was real frustration. It's just like standing still, running past you. There hasn't been a whole bunch of fall start penalties or anything either. So it's been okay for Benson. And Smith was asked what he's seen from Calil Benson through this first three games. It's been for you, awesome, man. To watch him as undrafted guy coming here, getting opportunity, and just keep excelling and working his ass off every day like he does. He gets coached hard, and he responds really well to it. He responds to every challenge that they presented to him. And just as an older player, it's been in a similar position. You know, Creed and I just trying to give him any encouragement and advice and tips that we can. And just really excited about his development, not only as a player, but as a person, may as a great guy can say enough good things about KB. And I got said, just being a pro and coming to work every day. And it's not going to be perfect. I mean, hell, I'm not perfect. And as a rookie starting NFL, he's not going to be perfect. But he's working to be better. And that's like the best part about it. Mays eager to learn. Is eager to be great. Now, Andrew told us today that Josh Simmons is that. We've known that. He hasn't been practicing. That's the only even injury designation listed. No one's even questionable or doubtful and anything like that.

So that's good news for the chiefs as they head to this game. For sure. We've known that Simmons wasn't going to be playing. So it's been fine. Kenneth Walker has been a revelation for this offense so far. It's been really, really good. So Trace Smith talked a little bit here about what it's been like to actually blocking these games for Kenneth Walker. Yeah. When you have great running backs like K9, you have great running backs like EJ2, man, Bershard. It makes it fun seeing those guys be successful. Making the big runs, the big plays. And it's encouraging because you see a guy fighting for the yards. And after contacting you in yardage, too. And it really makes you want to be better for them. Because you see how hard they're working for it. And it makes it easy in a way where you see a guy and he's that talented and what you have behind you. And you just do your job. And they're going to light them up. What's it like when you get in one situation where he kind of takes off the way Patrick has been able to advance to? But you know, you may be blocking it all the sudden. You see Kenneth is going to be right. I'm just yelling, go, go. But with him and, you know, Emmett as well, you never know. Like they don't go down in first contact.

They like to make guys miss and do different things. So I think once again, for me, where I have to step up, is just fighting through the whistle, you know, and playing longer. Because, you know, an arm tackle might not bring these guys down. You know, a good hit might not surely bring these guys down. They're going to keep fighting for extra yardage. So for us up front, just being better and how we finished for them. There's a change of mental approach a little bit and have what you have a guy like that. Those guys like that can make guys miss and know that you may have another opportunity to block them. Feel? Yeah, 100% just trying to finish the play where it's a pile or anything of that nature. You know, I guess they're going to keep fighting for yardage. So we got to keep fighting for them as well. We've heard that from like Rishi Rice blocking as well. When you have someone who you get rewarded for doing something good, like a nice block or holding for an extra, you know, quarter of a second or whatever that breaks something and you get something out of it. Like, well, I like this. Yeah. You know, you can have a little bit of a win in the sales. If you pancake somebody and they still pick up two yards because they tripped over someone else, I'm not saying that's what it was like last year. You're always very careful to say, when the one like the guys

weren't great last year, I'm surprised that Trey didn't say that. We have a great running route. Not that the guys weren't great last year. I mean, we're great last year. Yeah, it's nice to have a run at that. I mean, you can have a dominant block last year and get four yards. And you can maybe a 75% block this year and you get 18 yards. It's nice to have a running back run past me and not right into the back of me. I've less bruises on my back. Nobody has run into my back so far this year. I would. Not to good. Are we too mean, maybe? No, probably accurate. It's also kind of the offensive line. And I think it was Cluel Benson last week. But Tray Smith, you know, throwing in Bershard Smith's name there. He's got zero attempts to share. Well, he was, he got a pass catch last week. He got a ball. He did. He did. He was out there. Okay. Come on, Kyle. He's on the team. I want to see more Bershard. Hey, listen, I didn't want to see it last week. We had a little Emmet Johnson over on some carries. And I'm like, what are you doing here? It's sharp. Didn't need to be in this game right now. What is happening? We did get a chance to talk to Noah Gray as well today. He had a couple of catches last week. One really nice catch against the little teammate, right?

When they were really going on trying to cover on that one. So they were a lot of old chief players on the team. They were on their way down. They were not on the way, maybe up like that. But listen, Noah Gray's great friends with Travis Kelsey. And he's been around watching this guy kind of go through being a little bit older. And he was asked today about what it's like to watch this kind of revitalize Travis Kelsey. That is awesome. He's flying around, telling me the other day, like I used to 27. He is a, you know, he's a great leader. He's a guy that comes in to work. He's another extremely humble dude, always willing to help out in whatever you need. And he's just a guy that just uplifts you. You know, when you show up to work and you got a guy like that, a leader like that in the locker room, makes you want to go out there in practice, even when you don't want to, even when you're tired. There's a lot going on here in the middle of the season. And he's just a guy that uplifts your spirit. So it's just a huge credit to who he is as a leader, his work ethic. And he's been that way. He's been consistent the entire time I've been here in his entire career. So just super blessed to be playing alongside him.

Still, I know every guy in that locker room is as well. Kelsey is amazing. It's absolutely amazing because he really does. He is at his heart. I know he's a big famous guy now. He's married to Taylor Swift. He's got a big fancy podcast. He's been in movies and does all these things. Dude loves to play football. Yeah. He loves to practice football. He loves to be in the locker room. Every single time. Mess around with the guys. He loves all of that stuff. And to love that when you've done as much as you have, means that you really, really love it. To still be hungry after not just playing a long time, but achieving what he's achieved. He's got three rings and he's going to the Hall of Fame. You know, if the legacy of his career is not going to be altered by what happens from here on really by any measurable, by any important measure, but yet he's still that just that desire. He wants to be the best player on the field at all times. And it was a situation when we coming back, why is he coming back? You know, is he really going to put the effort in and it's everyone who said, and I was

one of them. Anyone who said that they didn't think he was going to bring it. He's definitely bringing it. He's definitely bringing it. I know there are plenty of folks who like, you know, he doesn't do as much stuff with the podium and things like that because he's got his podcast and everything, but dude loves to play football. Yeah. And he loves to practice and do all that loves to be a chief. I mean, really loves to be a Kansas City chief. That's important. Which is, he's really an old guy now. I mean, you know, I talk about, it was over there talking to, you know, Chidea's class, yesterday talking to these kids are all young, Kyle's a kid. You're an old guy now, by the way, Kyle. You're not a kid like these other kids are, you know, you think about the rookies who maybe were in college for three years or four years. I mean, they're really young for Travis Kelsey to kind of identify with. So we've painted a picture for you of what the chiefs locker room looks like over there and you don't see cameras in there anymore. You can't have a camera in there. So you used to see the lockers. There's just wooden lockers and all that stuff.

So if you're a big time guy, you get a couple of lockers. Chris is down in the corner. He's got a couple of lockers. Same way in baseball. And he's got a, you know, big Bluetooth speaker that's on a four feet tall that he always has playing. Patrick's got a couple of lockers. Travis has a couple of lockers. Everyone else, you know, you're just there. You know, you just have a little fridge in there. And I was always like, whatever drink he's sponsoring. And I always had this stuff. He's added something this year. It's a TV VCR combo, like a little 13 in-screen made by Symphonic. You know, you remember that like the cheap Symphonic, right? Like thing. And I was in there at the end and I said, all right, you got to tell me, is this like yours from when you were a kid? He's not, no, I bought it on eBay. But he's got VHS tapes. We had a Symphonic TV VCR combo because we didn't have, when we were going on a driving vacation with our kids, we had a Honda van. But we had the DVD, you know, in the back of the headrest. We were, I'm not paying for that. So we had the car lighter adapter, put the VCR tape in.

The kids could watch the big clunky thing. And that's like the same one he's got there. And they always put movies in. And like, whether you had it, I went thinking about it, I talked to him. He was like, maybe last Wednesday, he would, they were watch that day. They had it in there just Friday night lights. I mean, the guy, they love, can you live that moment? Yes, they're playing those movies like when he was a kid and, you know, about football and stuff like that. There's always, it's a, you know, it's not the greatest picture in real because it's a four by three, right? 13 inch Symphonic, you know, TVVCR combo. He's got those movies in there. So it's always kind of on something's on it. Like you come in my office, I've always got whatever is on direct TV or something like that. And then, you know, you know, you know, I've got a lot of people, you know, like, I, I, I don't know how people are with him. We don't, because we don't really ask about that. You know what I mean? But like, I don't know how people are with him. I mean, I don't know how people are with him.

I mean, I don't know how people are with him. You don't, because we don't really ask about that. You know what I mean? But like, they got to give him some crap. The Taylor Swift writing songs about Cleveland, you know, they got to give him a little crap about that. But they don't, they don't talk about this. And that's kind of the cool part about it. Like, we don't bother to ask him things about Taylor Swift. And we don't bother to ask other people things about that. You know, we just don't, you get a couple questions here and there, you know, we had to ask him up a camp. You got married. How was it? Yeah, but that's it. I think if he's for some reason to say, yeah, yeah. Now, it would be funny if someone had a Taylor Swift post-drop in their locker. That would be funny across the way. That would be funny. That would be funny. One more here from Noah Gray. You know, he's been part of the blocking on these short yardage situations. Some good, some bad so far. But here's Noah asking what the key is to be good when they need to get that short yard. I mean, just do your job and whatever's asked to you, whether it's a pass play or a run play and get that first down. So, you know, we enjoy doing that.

We enjoy being on the field. It's one, two, three tight ends throw us all out there. But whatever's asked of us, we take pride in that, run blocking, catching the ball, whatever it is. And we go out there and we get that first down. And if we better at that, because it was great week one, they had the bad goal line standing up scoring on it. Yeah. But it took a fourth down pass to do that and not good last week. That was a big thing. I think I had that first down and scored a touchdown that game comes over. Yeah. Did they punch it in? 21, 7. I think it also looked for place to serve up. It's just a weird play. The third down play, you always see there's a short yard saying that something gets popped and then, you know, someone will come and push or drag you across. There was no one there for Ken on the third down play. It's like he's right there. Just someone be there. Or on the fourth down play. The fourth down play got to kind of stone. It was a little different. Yeah. But what we thought was notable, and this is mentioned once or twice this week, was that unlike the previous week and the week before that. I didn't have time. No, no talking. I think they're trying to look at different way at it.

They're probably up thinking themselves if it works, just put the do. They don't think themselves doing the push. No. You just go do it. You just stop it. If you've got something, do it. Yeah. I think, you know, what if there's a short yard situation? I bet you see tongue out there this week. Probably so. Probably so. I think you know. You went from having a cheat code last year. I mean, it's a cream hunt was better than the push push on and one. Even when that blocked well. Yeah. He just knew when he had the three had the net. You won. He had the neck and Kenneth Walker. I mean, I have that neck, but he has every other neck. See, yeah, including the neck. He's made more people miss this year than. Cream hunt did in this two and a half years back with the chiefs. Probably I'll take that. Both of us left all of last year. I couldn't make anyone miss. Drew Tranquil also spoke today at the podium. Drew. Who is talking about the just overall. How you characterize what they've seen so far on defense this year? Resilient. It's cool to see how many new guys have come in through free agency or the draft and

how quickly guys have meshed. You know, I've had experiences in the NFL where you know, that takes some time, takes some games. I can't even take a few seasons and to see guys coming in and click right away and click with our culture and the way we do things has been cool to see. It's been good so far. Not listening to just even better. The Colts game was just really weird. It felt like they were way worse last week than they were because they did only give up ten points. But got to get off the field. Spags was funny on Thursday. I haven't had to feel that way after. 19 play drive. I would think. It just started. It was quite funny. It was a little bit rough. I can imagine. Yeah, but I think they'll be all right in this game. I'd like to see them get a turnover. You know, get off the field on third down and eight or something like that. Not have that. There was a little excuse for all of them. I had to put penalty here. Well, I could call the bad call here. They didn't just, they just didn't make enough plays on third down. And part of doing that, you know, it's all levels. You have to get that done. And Trank will generally align back or but also played a little bit of safety last week

because that's just kind of how it went. Yeah, we've been doing it for a few years now. So it kind of a sprinkle it in here and there. Just kind of keep the defense on their toes and, you know, show them different looks. And taking it back to your roots. Back to the roots. Yeah. What do you think it does present to them? I mean, is it actually like, okay? 23s back there. 21s up here is it just kind of scrambling? Well, I think a coordinator is looking at personnel. And if we roll dime out there, they're probably expecting that we can get in certain looks. But if we leave nickel package out there with two linebackers, they're probably not expecting us to roll our coverage sometimes. And, you know, we, we still do that. And so able to present some looks, even out of nickel personnel. They're all football players at heart. Yeah. You know, you got to find your way to get wherever it is to make the plays. And I like like the fact that they got a lot of guys willing to do whatever it takes. Now, they're going to have to do whatever it takes to stop Brock Bauer's. They got a couple of tight ends with the Raiders. And I think that's honestly the key to this game for the chief defense. They cannot get abused by tight ends.

I don't think gasping genty can beat them. Probably not. Probably not. You can't let Brock Bauer's and Mayer's pretty good too. Yeah, both good. And you can't let that happen. And Drew, tranquil, was asked just how good this Brock Bauer's is. I mean, you saw what he did last week. You know, when healthy, he's one of the best in the league. And he's dynamic. You know, can get yards after the catch. He's a tough matchup. And so, you know, we'll have to be on our pees and cues is a really good player. He is a really good player. And he's healthy now. He's kind of just worked himself back into it. You know, we've seen for 10, 12 years, you know, what Travis Kelsey can mean to your offense. And I think they've got that kind of a player. They're the next one. Yeah, they've got that one for sure. All right, now this chief's raider saying is, you know, it means more, I think, honestly, to a lot of fans because we grew up here and all that stuff. These guys come and go. You're tranquil, it's played for other teams. But you start to feel it, you know, especially when both teams are good. So he was asked what it means to him now after he's been here.

Because he was a charge before he's been around these rivalries, what it means to him after being here for a few years. Yeah, there's a deep history there. It's fun even coming in. The organization is learning about how deep and rich that tradition is. But, you know, both teams three and over right here. And, you know, for a chance to be top of the division. And, you know, I know they're riding high and they've got a lot of confidence right now. They're playing really good football. And we've got a good team too. And so it's exciting, man. It's early in the season, but it, you know, it feels like a really big game. It's a couple of Andy Dowles. I made his heat. But do you say stuff specific to the industry in the rivalries? It's more isolated. I think it's just a sentiment in the building. I think, you know, guys who have played in the AFC West a long time understand that. And, you know, you understand these division games are big and that this division in particular has been a tough division. If you look over the past few years and so it's competitive and, you know, a lot of great teams, a lot of great coaches. And so it'll be a good one for the afternoon. You have a unique perspective having been a charger. Does it feel even elevated here, been like the Chargers Raiders or do you feel like it

because it is such an old rivalry? Yeah, it feels, it feels a little more intense. It feels like there's a little bit more of like that of that hate, if you will, intensity. We always talk about it as a physical game. And that, I feel like it kind of epitomizes maybe a little bit what the chiefs Raiders rivalry has been. It's a little bit nasty, a little bit tough. And so we'll have to bring that on Sunday to win. And Clark Hunt educates these guys too about the history. Oh, yeah. You know, when they meet with them up at camp, they talk about these things. But it is weird since you move around so much, you just probably don't have like what Timmy had or Billy Bob had, you know, you heard what Eric Benemey said. Eric Benemey got a text from Neil Smith. Neil Smith had this. Now, Neil Smith ended up playing for everyone in the division except the Raiders, but he was a chief, most of all. Yeah. But you played him the same guy for a lot. Dockland Raiders we years ago, you know, definitely mean something on that front there.

So it's going to be fun. I'm glad the rivalry, the rivalry has always been there, but all these drivers are better when both teams have something going on. So you mean that your team wins, you can kind of crow about it. We grew up watching this rivalry and then the Broncos and John L. Wade bothering you and all this stuff. And then you'd have those stretches where you paint manning shows up. Oh, you can't beat them again. And then all of a sudden the chiefs were beating everybody forever. And it hasn't been so easy to last couple of years. The Broncos feel like they passed the chiefs, won the division. And this is a big year to kind of tamp that one down. I don't know. We'll see. We'll talk to Kevin Holland about it coming up next. He's called a lot of these games. Welcome back into the program on this red Friday here on Sports Radio 810WHB. I'm Todd Libot in for Seren Petro today. And listen, just because Seren's not here doesn't mean we're not going to have Kevin Holland on in the five o'clock arrow on Friday, Kevin. How are you doing, buddy? I'm doing great. Todd, good to see you. Good to hear your voice and good to be on with you.

Seren is probably doing something fun. So so we will pick up where he left off and talk about everything NFL. And that means the Kansas City chiefs. Well, Seren's younger than us. He's got parents week into college for his kids. See, we're past that. Good for him. We're older guys. Good for him. But hey, this chiefs team, you've seen him a couple times. I don't think people quite knew what to expect with Patrick Holmes coming back. No more questions about his knee. You were there on Monday night football, calling on Westwood one that first game against the Broncos. And I mean, Kenneth Walker was unbelievable that night. Just what were your first impressions of getting to see that team? And then you saw a couple weeks later, last week down in Miami for television. What do you think of how they've kind of adapted and adjusted over this first few weeks of the season? The thing that stood out, Todd on the Monday night game was something that Andy mentioned to Trent and I last week when we had meetings with the chiefs. And that was he knew the lateral part would be an indicator of where he was with the knee.

But he said to him what was most important was the acceleration straight ahead, the get up and go going kind of in one straight line. In that Denver game you recall, he had the touchdown run of 15 yards, basically ran up the middle. He had done it earlier in that game. So it was pretty apparent early in the Denver game that the knee was handling the stress in the situation. Probably a great sign. I think Patrick may have commented on it after the game. He clearly talked to us about it last week before the dolphins game that he feels great. And he had asked him because Trent has blown his knee as ACL and we know Patrick had two legaments that he tore. Just did he worry about guys around his feet in a pocket that was getting a little bit messy, a little congested, you know, when you've had ankle, foot, knee, leg injuries. If you've got a bunch of guys down there, kind of grab and at you and around your feet

as things are getting a little hairy, then you, you know, does that cause alarm? And Patrick said, yeah, you know, it's probably natural for it too, but I'm quickly beyond that and I have moved on. So I think with everybody with that kind of injury, you're thinking that's going to be kind of that mental side that needs to be dealt with. Looks like he's dealt with that well. The thing I got from the chiefs last week in Miami was that even though it may not have gone the way that a lot of people thought it would with a huge double digit win and they won by double digits, but it was not an overpowering win. It was not a win where you just say, my God, they just blew them off the field. It was not like that kind of game at all. Miami is a young but improving week to week team and they're playing at home and they're opener. And you know, I think that that was a good game for the chiefs to continue to find out what they've got at various positions that are still maybe in a state of flux, the left tackle, continuing to get Walker indoctrinated into everything, every corner of the playbook,

which I'm sure he is, but until you go through the reps in game with the real speed of the game, I guess you really don't know sometimes exactly how you'll react and what the movements are and just what the pieces around you are doing. He got that look like Miami had done a pretty good job with Kelsey except for the early part of the game and then late when he got the touchdown. So you know, there were some challenges there as there always is going to be in the NFL, but they get the win on the road for the first road win and they're only road appearance. So now they go to Vegas this week and it will be cranked up a little bit more. It's inside. They're very excited in Nevada about that team and it will be probably less achieve so an influence than what we've seen in the past in terms of fans because they usually took over that stadium and it was a 60 40 split chiefs, maybe even deeper red in those stands. I think that will may even itself out for this weekend and the Raider fans are very excited

about their team even more so now that they're one of five unbeaten. So this is an exciting game for Vegas. It clearly is another test for the chiefs. And I don't think is in the past when they're having that wonderful run of five Super Bowls in six years where you could almost kind of not yawn or shrug your shoulders at a regular season game. I think after what happened last year and the quarterback still coming out and out of rehab and the the left tackle doing what he's doing as a kid signed off the street in May, I think every regular season game for a chiefs fan has in Treeske has consequence and has real meaning. And so this game is the next game in the schedule, but boy for game four, pretty big game in the division. I'd say much like the Broncos are going to have in San Francisco, you know, big games in this division. This is an important weekend within the AFC West and chiefs fans will be right at the edge of the seat. And I think they'll perform well.

It was good they got on the road and got that out of their system last week to kind of indoctrinate that change routine about getting on the plane, going there, the hotel and the game day in a different locker room and all the things that the road presents. So another good challenge this weekend Vegas for sure. Kevin Harlan is our guest. He's called a couple of chiefs games this year once in the radio and once on television. He mentioned that San Francisco game. He'll be there with Denver this Sunday. But Kevin, you were there the first first week. They got they pushed the jumbo sets out there going for the 4,000, third downs in Kenneth Walker. Look like it was pretty easy. Not so easy the next couple of times they had a couple of they got stopped on against the Colts. They had a third and one and a fourth and one against the dolphins. It is a chess match with these teams and what they try to do. Do you what what was different for the chiefs where they couldn't get the yard against the dolphins and what you saw that first week when they seem to pick up all those against the Broncos? Well, I don't know that anyone and you know that week one is is and Serenna, I were talking

about this analogy like jumping out of the plane and hoping the parachute and furls. And sometimes it doesn't and you hit hard. Other times it does. You have to say, landing and you carry on and live for another jump. And and that's kind of what week one is. You really don't know what these teams are doing. I don't know that and this is on the Broncos. I don't know that they were necessarily prepared for my homes being as agile and physically as good as he was. Number two, I think they felt they had an edge going up against a rookie for agent left tackle that didn't seem to matter in that game. And third and maybe most importantly, the execution and the use of Walker as often as they did as a three down back out of the backfield throwing and and all thing between he probably caught them off guard. And I still think for any team playing the Chiefs at Arrowhead is a monumental task for

the visiting team. And there was a bit of that involved too. So there were a lot of different surprises in there and things that that clearly expose themselves week one. Colts are ready for it week two. Dolphins are ready for it week three. And you can rest assured that the Raiders will be ready for it this week. So it's just teams adjusting to the first month and we're going to continue to see this. And I think the Chiefs are who we think we've seen the first three weeks. There's nothing that leads me to think that they're not. I wish they had a little bit more smack at the at the wide receiver position. I continually think that when I watch burrow and the two target T has and I watch Stafford and the different targets he has in Los Angeles. And I don't know that he really has gotten that ace receiver. He's got young promising guys worthy and clearly a rice.

But maybe it's enough. Maybe I would just hate to think. And we've seen him with some pretty good receivers over the years. And really it's been Kelsey at the tight end. But he's never had that Jamar chase. Puganakua Jackson Smith and Jigba type of like like a like just a incredibly game altering. We need the full attention of our defense on this receiver kind of guy. Kelsey. I read probably pretty close to that. But he's just a dip. Hill was the only exception clearly. And the sample size was good, but not the longevity, which we were all hoping for cheese fans right with be there. Hill was the one exception. And they've really tried to fill that. It feels like all these years later. And Hill now is a distant memory. When he was there, the gadgets they could do the things they could do offensively as we

all saw firsthand were so great. But since then, and really over the landscape of his career, there's not been aside from Hill that defining guy on a regular basis. And that has been it's been kind of hard to get. It's been hard to find. And they've made stamps out of they brought in veterans. Guys maybe on their last turn around the league. They've tried to invest in some younger players. And for whatever reason, because of injuries or things outside of football, it has not developed the way they've wanted. Kelsey has been really the mainstay. And that was my point. Is it like for the for the 10 years, the Patrick has been there. Nine years as a starter. It's not been that constant guy that he's been able to connect with at the receiver position aside from Travis at the tight end position. And so they've been able to and they had Hill. But he left as we all know in the trade with Miami.

So that's the one thing that you see is something that every quarterback would love to have. Kind of nebulous to find clearly. Maybe not necessarily always apparent. And you're hoping that someone at that position can emerge, which will only make this offense better. Kevin Harlan is our guest. And you know, I don't think people are really surprised the chiefs are three. You know, maybe a little surprised, but it's the chiefs. A lot of people are surprised. The Raiders are three. A brand new head coach. They've got a veteran quarterback and Kirk cousins. They tried to trade away their best defensive player last year. And it got fell apart. He had to come back. Yeah, the overall number one pick. How is this team gotten to three? And oh, and what's the future look like for them? They're running the ball. They made some great offseason acquisitions on defense. And they've got a real steady hand at quarterback. You know, last year, we were all probably a little too quick to judge cousins when he played for Atlanta. And because he had torn as a killies the year before. And I think it's now pretty documented, even more than a CL clearly, that you need two

years from that torn Achilles to be what you were. And clearly, Kirk cousins was not in the in the half season. He began as the quarterback for Atlanta. Now he goes to the Raiders, removed, you know, almost two years from that torn Achilles and look what he is. He's back to what he was with the Vikings and that wonderful run. He's had a calming influence on the organization. They've got their future quarterback literally learning everything that they're basically the same person. And they believe they're made up the same way. You know, they have all the same kind of traits, not just as players, but as people. It's the perfect situation. Mendoza would love to play and start, but they're winning with cousins. Mendoza is only getting better by the day learning the NFL, being a part of it and being around

cousins. It's a win-win. But they've made some nice additions on defense. They've got the running back and genty who provides the balance for that offense. We've got a couple tight ends. We've not seen brick bars yet. Be, you know, what they wanted him to be this season because of injury. So my point is that the quarterback is stable. The additions on defense have made over. And they've got a new head coach, a younger guy than Pete Carroll was when he took over last year. And they've got a young voice who has a real plan and they're executing it. So I, regardless of who they've played, they are still 3 and 0. And that needs to be taken seriously. And there's no doubt they are definitely an arrow by taking it serious. All right, Kevin, I know you're a little short on time today. So let's get to our final four, four quick wins here on the Chiefs and Raiders. The first one here, do you have a favorite Chiefs Raiders memory from calling the games on a radio or one of the TV games you've called over the last, you know, three decades

or so? Well, you know, we called them when they were in Los Angeles. Yeah, called them on their Los Angeles Raiders. Rich, Cannon and I, if I'm not mistaken, called their final game in Oakland for CBS before they moved to Vegas, there were some incredible matchups between the Chiefs back in the early 90s and the Raiders. I, you know, I, they've played in a playoff game or two over the years when I was doing them. And since I left, I don't know if there's one. It's kind of just, I love the fact they're in Vegas. I feel bad they left Oakland, but that was not what the NFL needed. The stadium was antiquated. There were many issues. There were having a hard time passing the bills and finding the money to build a new one. They had to move. And my personal opinion, I wish they had to move to Los Angeles because they had history there and let the chargers move to Vegas.

But as it turned out, I think Stan Kronke owned the Rams knew that if he let the Raiders go to LA, right, my feeling was there'd be too much competition. And I don't want to face that competition. And we need to win the day. So I need another team. Let's pick the less popular chargers, which they did. It's worked out for the Rams. I would say it's worked out for the Raiders going to Vegas. But I have a collage of memories about the chiefs and Raiders over the years. All right. Who is a good surprise team? What surprised you in a positive way this year in the league so far? Well, I mean, with the bronze dead last night, what they seem to be doing with the new head coach. I mean, I think it's probably pretty hard to see that that can't be, you know, three and one, that's that's pretty stunning for a team that's had their best start in what five years or whatever. Jacksonville's dominance early has been a little bit surprising. I guess maybe the fact that that they have played so early, so well and so dominantly and some of their wins. So I would and then the chargers being where they are.

I, you know, just off the top of my head, those seem to be the surprises. Am I surprised the chiefs of three, you know, maybe a little, but probably not. You know, if you knew and we didn't, that my homes would be what he was and that Walker would have this kind of impact and that everyone would be falling into line with a couple of new faces on defense and and the void left tackle to say, that's what you're going to go into the season with. Here's where you're going to play and, and you know, the new left tackle quarterback off of two torn ligaments, you know, and all the change, like you say, wow, three, you know, that's pretty ambitious. But no, I guess I wouldn't be surprised. And I guess I'm going to say I'm not, I'm not surprised with three, you know, I guess I kind of felt like there were this way, not overwhelmingly, but kind of. So I'm glad they're where they are. They'll get tested this week. They'll make no mistake. My next one was going to be who's a bad surprise. I'm guessing the chargers are going to be a bad surprise. Yeah, I can't figure them out that they're now and the Rams are one and two and they were the old forwhelming favorite.

Now they played some really tough games. Blue, the lead and Denver this past Sunday night were crushed in Australia and then had in between the win over a darkness, New York giant team. So I don't know, they they they're surprised me. Maybe with the lack of punch, they have provided early in the season when everybody thought, I mean, and you almost historically said, this is far and away. The team that's going to win the NFC. And lastly, you just mentioned Australia. I know maybe you don't want to go do these international games. But if there was one of these international places, you could go call a game. Where would you want to go? Well, I've done a lot of games in London. Yeah. I've really enjoyed London. I think Germany would be a fun place. And I did for Fox back when I was there in the early 90s, mid 90s in the world league of American football in NSL Europe. So I'd done a lot of games in Germany and their football fan is ravenous. They love the NFL and to see a regular season NFL game there, I think would be pretty special.

So I'd probably say Germany, it wouldn't be my first place to visit. But in terms of the football atmosphere, it would be it would be exhilarating, I think. I'm marking you down for a no on the flight to Australia too far, right? I've done it. And I've been there. And I've done like the in between years for the Olympics there back in the early two, in fact, just before 9-11, we went there and did it for for Turner broadcast. But you're there for a while going there for one football game is insanity. Yeah, I know. I get I hear it. I know in the Rams have admitted we screwed up. We we we listened to some science from guys we had trusted. It didn't work out. We won't do that again. So I and they want to win that they want that Australian market teams get different markets and they want that Australian market, but they didn't show well. And so I think if they go there again, they're going to have to clearly change the flight path. No question about it, Kevin. Appreciate your time today. Have a good call on Sunday and on Monday night football right here on Sports Radio 810.

Thank you, Todd. Always fun. I'll take care. That is Kevin Harlan from CBS Sports Voice of America right here on the program. But first, he law fed a delicatessen end of the hour answer how long is the longest winning streak ever in the chiefs Raiders series by either team. How many games? I'm already at a long streak, but there were probably a loss in the middle of that. And he's lost three times and nine games. It is nine games nine games from 2003 through 2007. They won nine straight the second longest is seven. That was from I believe 93 through 96. So 2000. It wasn't even Marty. No, they lost like one time in their. They lost that weird 28 seven game at Oakland or L.A. in 92. Yeah. That kind of interrupted it. But he was 18 and three against the chiefs.

And loved every one of those wins. Wow. You know, I remember being out there in 1993 covering the game with Channel 4, news Channel 4. And we were doing post game shows. He was shaking. He was so excited. They won the game because they had lost the one the year before. Yeah. And it was right in the heart of all the business. Marty loved beating the Raiders. Absolutely loved it. Especially loved beating the Raiders with Marcus Allen, which was really fun that year. Yes. Going back to the Coliseum. I really, really, really enjoyed that. Okay, Curtis Kicker. I was at Jeff Chidea's class yesterday at KU. He's got a capstone class and he asked me to come over there and speak. And one of the things I told these kids and I hadn't seen this story yet. One of these things I told these kids, I told them a lot of things. Beyond time, you know, I tried to tell them a story about how in Mark Mangino, I had press conferences. If you weren't there by 12, you didn't get in. And they looked at me like, who's Mark Mangino? I'm like, I forgot how young these kids were.

But, you know, the big bowl of oranges out there in the hall. Beyond time, don't be scared to ask questions. ABR, always be rolling. All those things. And then another thing I said is, listen, I'm a dad here. Don't put anything on your social media that's going to come back and haunt you. Because while you may see plenty of politicians get away with whatever and it's not a problem form, that ain't the way it works for a lot of people if you've done something on your social media. So what has happened now with the Portland Trailblazers? They have, they hired a guy who's 29 years old. Yes. And they said they were, I guess, being criticized initially for going cheap. Oh, you just don't want to pay anybody because you're going to hire this person because they're an up and coming star as what their words were. And it didn't take 24 hours before it came to light. Some things he posted when he was 15. Yeah, these tweets for Braden Bell and they've now since rescinded the hire. Yes. They posted something last night that said that they're not, they're going in a different

direction. So, in December and November of 2012 and 2013. So this is when he was 14 or 15 years old, you know, high school kid. And listen, these aren't great tweets. They're not the worst thing on Twitter by far, not the worst thing on Twitter. But if you have a high profile thing like the play by play voice of the Portland Trailblazers, these things can come back and haunt you. And now it's come back to Haunt, Brendan Bell. So I told these kids yesterday, I mean, when you start applying for jobs, it's one thing if you're just in class and your kids think, you know, people you think you just tweet it. Like there's been some silly tweets that Travis Kelsey had when some dumb tweets when he was a kid or something like that. I'm telling you, it's different for a player than it is for someone working for the team. It's just absolutely different. And it's different working for the Portland Trailblazers than a private company around here because even though the Portland Trailblazers aren't a publicly held company, they are a public trust. And they represent the city and all that.

So, Brendan Bell got the kicker. He got kicked out before he got in. Got the gig of a lifetime and it lasted less than 24 hours. Didn't get to call a game. You ever tweeted a thing you wish you were heading tweeted? Probably Curtis. Not really. Not really. There's so much of your accounts. I'm tweeted and how am I going to have one now? No, you've got the other one with a house and the Bitcoin. That's right. That's right. My, I've tweeted some things I probably shouldn't have but nothing that I really regretted. When I heard the story though, I thought of myself at 15. That was a year where I was really rebelling. I was a lot at school. You and I didn't need Twitter at 15. Getting pink cards on the bus and spending a lot of time in Saturday school at Raytown, Jr. High. And I would not have wanted to what things I would have posted on, I don't know what I would have posted on, on whatever was Twitter back then. Oh, yeah. It would have been worse than some of the things you see. Probably the worst thing I would have tweeted. It would have been of the same, same tenor as what Brendan Bell posted. But it would have been stuff that probably could have gotten me in trouble in retrospect.

And this isn't the worst because I don't tweet things about much. But draft night of 2017, I said, I think I said, I'm glad the chiefs drafted a quarterback. I kind of wanted them to draft to Sean Watson. But listen, to Sean Watson's three and one. That ain't gonna last. That's probably not gonna last. You can't keep coming from behind and winning in the end of the day. Not gonna work that way. You know, like we talked about earlier. Situations. Situations. Situations, where are you? Who's your coach? Who's in charge of you? And that's how it goes. I'm glad the chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes. In retrospect, yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. But we were both in the so-and-error. So go find freezing cold tapes. I was happy. I was happy. I'm just so happy they drafted one of them. I just wanted them to draft a quarterback. What was that? So happy. We, none of us had really heard him talk on that night when you get, you get, you guys got the speaker up and also, hey, man, we're like, what in the world is that? Who is that? Now it's just, you know, we love it. All right. And that's gonna do it for us here. We got high school football coming up next.

Thanks so much for listening to the program. Petro will be back on Monday.
