Oh We got a real good show for you with Paul Dana Mark Chalicell from this quest to some run and gas Inside the story's emphasize that that life and respect your flags It's a growler fight a show it's who they like Hello and welcome into another episode of the growler podcast This is who they like I am Mark Shalifoo join this week by J Morrison J How are you? I'm doing great. I'm looking forward to this It's been a while since I've been on this this episode of the pod It is show all the pod The the the growl pals were excited for we got a lot of good J questions in there today We might even get to Austin's as we've teased her weeks This might be the final fulfillment for him We did get a good J ambush question We'll get to some dad life later in the show

You've got your got your own meth raccoon story you were telling me A little story for that subject so I'm looking forward to that and hearing what that is And I'm gonna ask you for some optimism for me just and all the despondent growl pals that we have out there this week Heading into this Jacksonville game But before we jump into all of that we do need to talk about our friends at bed MGM And the pig skin pick them every week you can go down there and place it's 10 bets that you have to do against the spreads that you're picking It's free to enter and they give out a share of a thousand dollars in online bonus bets every single week If you're in the top 10 you get a hundred dollars in the online bonus bets And it's very simple to do I started doing it this season if you don't have the rewards card they can set you up with that very quickly And get that rolling for you and Jay are you still doing the pig skin pickups? I am I actually I came in third place in week two I went seven and three so I got a hundred dollars in free bets

And I'm 18 and 12 overall I was 16 and I was six and four last week So I usually will go over there Friday after we get done at the stadium Paul and I will record the preview podcast and then I'll hop over to bed MGM and make my picks So I'm off to a good start still alive in the survivor as well So who are you going with this week in the survivor? Are you afraid to tip your hand? No, why why go against the trip? I'm just I'm fading the dolphins every week So I'm going with Minnesota this week. I'll be going with Cincinnati next week until the dolphins look like they could possibly win a game I'm betting on or I'm going to ride with whoever's playing them Honestly for the survivor pool too. It's the smartest play you just go safe because everyone else will knock themselves out as witnessed by me going with the Sean Watson Getting browns earlier in the season going fading Cleveland that was took me out quick probably took a lot of people out quick Pigs can pick them is accessible every week you don't have to be in the survivor pool to do that

And I'm with you Jay I think the picks are a little bit smarter to make on Fridays Avoid that Thursday game which can be kind of a trap game for NFL I also I don't know how your approach is I've been going more NFL spreads when I'm picking these And maybe like two or three college games I feel like sometimes you can get lost in the weeds with some of the college games they put up there But do you have a good strategy for the growl pals on that front? I prefer the NFL games as well the college there's been a lot of you know surprising upsets There's you know there's been a few in the NFL but there's really been a lot in the in the college game And the other thing is to bet MGM sets these lines early in the week so if you wait till Friday or Saturday You know there could be an injury or something else that happens and that line moves quite a bit And you can you can get some real value because you get it at the original number So that's that's another reason I go in there on Friday but yeah I've been I've been riding with Ohio State most weeks But for the most part I'd say eight nine of my picks each week or NFL games

And really seven is that magic number it seems like I was I think I finished just outside the top 10 So I was 11th in week one having seven picked correctly but then the Sunday night football score total is the tie breaker for all of that But you know so you really only need to nail seven of the 10 and it's free to play so we highly recommend all the growl pals getting down there for that We also recommend all the growl pals in the Sincere area and beyond if you're drivable to come hang out with us Next Thursday October 8th at our next live show where at 50 West on Worcester this time we're going to the Worcester location It's our state of the Bengal show these are so fun I know the first one was an absolute blast I was on the road for it I missed it I will be there this Thursday with Paul and Jay and Charlie and special guests who knows who's going to be there I'm fired up for it Jay are you looking forward to it? I can't wait I can't wait to see the special guests there and you see all the all the growl pals there

It can't wait to get back to 50 West down on Worcester I mean the Mason one was was impressive and credo I was my first time being there But as Paul's mentioned on this pod the one on Worcester just feels like home that's where we started Yeah it's got a little bit of magic to it and here's the biggest thing that I like about these shows this year We would do the pre-game shows the last couple seasons those were fun too those were fun to see a ton of growl pals a lot of excitement on game days But you guys always felt bad for having to run out of there right away and this is a much more laid back atmosphere You guys don't have to run and cover a game immediately you get to meet more of the growl pals after the show and stuff It's just a good hang so we highly recommend all of you coming out for that We were just talking before the show about some of our ideas for that show so I think it's going to be a fun one that you don't want to miss for sure And I do want to say too that I felt felt bad at the last one up in Mason because my son and his girlfriend surprised me by driving over from Columbus And then my my daughter and her wife surprised me as well she coached a game at Oak Hills went back to Hamilton then came to Mason

I didn't know they were coming to the show so it was really great to see them and I was I spent a lot of time with them Afkaz I didn't see any either one of them in a while and I spent a lot of time with them after the show I don't I don't think they're coming to this one so look forward to hanging out with all the the growl pals drinking some beers watching football and just chatting about football after the show You've heard it from Jay first he will neglect his family to hang out with you if you come to the show Let's get into a Jay before we dive into the questions from the growl pals I just wanted to ask you for some optimism up front I'm looking at this game and I'm not going to ask you to go full game preview mode or anything But I'm already trying to talk myself into some of the positives of the Pittsburgh fallout and from my standpoint I'm looking at this team And it's like we saw some of the same problems that we saw last season our inbox is full of that frustration from the growl pals And I thought to myself on one hand I was disappointed you can't give away a divisional road game that easily But on the other hand where the vibes are pretty low right now with some people how awesome would it be how easy would it be to get those vibes right back with a win against Jacksonville

A team that is good on both sides of the ball They're not going to be one of those teams that we think is good like Houston and then they turn out to maybe not be that good And the biggest thing for me is like we've got veterans on this defense So maybe it will be different from last year right last year you saw the defense kind of collapsing some big games and then continue to collapse in some big games And then continue to miss tackles for the entire season and never really got too much better until it was late and they were playing a little bit easier schedule So I'm optimistic about what this could do for the psyche of the growl pals because there's some trauma there from these past few years And a quick win against the jaguars I think would do a lot to reverse that do you have any sort of signs of optimism for me on that front Well I will say that the Bengals have a four game winning streak against the jaguars It's their longest active streak against any team so that they've been really good against the jaguars when they play him here in Cincinnati

So that's a reason for optimism they still have Joe burrow at quarterback I think that's where he starts that for a reason for optimism Another reason for optimism is yet today is October so we're technically out of September but I still kind of look at the first four weeks of the season as September football And September football does not give you an accurate picture of what your team is and it's just it kind of it's one of my pet peeves when something goes wrong There's a turnover they give up a touchdown in the first quarter and just the angst and the hand ringing and just throwing their hands up and this game's over it's a loss It happens in the first quarter and people just are so quick to go sour and and pout and I feel like that's kind of on a bigger scale what you're doing This is the first quarter of the season and we're not even done with the first quarter of the season the fourth game has come up this week So let it play out Pittsburgh's always been a tough match up for this team and especially Aaron Rogers with getting the ball out as quick as he does

It kind of negated that past rush and I don't think you're going to see as much of that from Trevor Lawrence Trevor Lawrence will as well as he's playing he still has that moment Somewhere in a game where just a really bad turnover worthy play that actually turns into a turnover a lot of times He will give this defense a chance to make up a big play at some point So I just I cliches it is a lot of football left to play I know it's frustrating when your team loses a game they should have won But you win this one and you're three and one and who would have complained about that when the season started I get it they lose it's two and two and that two and two and three and one feel miles apart especially after starting two and oh But I think there's optimism there I think this is a it's a winnable game I haven't made my pick yet but I think I would lean towards Bengals in this one just because they are at home

But on the road tough environments two straight weeks coming home and like you said this team has veterans they have dexter Lawrence they have Brian cook they have guys that that know how to rebound after a loss after a disappointing loss And I just I think you're going to see this team play pretty well on Sunday I mean you made a good point to like Pittsburgh's not an easy game on the road there they're not a terrible team So I do think that speaks to the psyche of how good things were for the growl pals and Bengals fans that you know they were two and oh and disappointed that they didn't win three in a row especially in a tougher setting there I think what has me most optimistic about this is just the fact that I feel the exact opposite of I did before the Pittsburgh game before Pittsburgh I was like hey they're a little bit beat up They're kind of playing around with the offensive line a little bit mechast dropping balls they didn't look good the last few weeks I think this is going to be the Bengals easily by a touchdown or two and the NFL is an unpredictable lead we see all the time where you think like oh on paper yeah of course the Seattle is going to roll in this one

And it doesn't play out that way so again I look at this one and it's Jacksonville is so good they're scary good in these different spots And they've looked great the past few weeks and the Bengals are a little beat up especially in the secondary and how's that going to play out but it is an unpredictable league and like you said being at home is a big factor as well so growl pals do not give up Even though we do have a lot of dark questions this week from some of you that we will get to here in just a minute Jay what was your favorite story this week? So a favorite story is the ending not the way it played out but I used to work with Dave Gibonsky at the day daily news and he if you haven't seen how to real health scary was playing in a men's soccer league game and collapsed and he had no pulse and he was turning blue and his eight year old sons at the game you know wondering what's going on with his dad and really really scary moment but fortunately two of his teammates on that soccer team or doctors and they had a defibrillator right there on scene and that's what saved his life and so he spent a week in the hospital trying to get figured out what's going on and you know his heart taking care of

And then Tom Archdeak and the great columnist from the date daily news wrote a big story on what happened with Dave and they're kind of pushing the increased available to the state of the world The increased availability of these AEDs that a fibrillators that can that can obviously save someone's life it saved Dave's life and you know he's crushed he's he's always played in men's basketball leagues and and now this soccer league he's an active guy and now he's got an internal pacemaker that is going to not allow him to play contact sports so he's kind of changing his outlet for that from playing to advocating for the AEDs and that's really true. And I just I love that the story worked out and I love that he's trying to turn such a negative into a positive. That is like a really important point too is like you know that can happen to anybody you talked about him being a very active person and that's the thing is like you can be in good health and still have something hidden out there that's going to strike you in a terrible moment like that so that is definitely a worthwhile cause to champion and put out there and it is a cool story

We'll share that story on our socials too so people can get that full story across are you ready to jump into some questions from the growl pals sure let's do it. But before we do that I did want to mention our good friend of the show Eric Stano of Keller Williams realtors listen with Jay we've talked about Stan you a bunch on this show. Did you finally get your hat from Stano at the live show. I did and I was looking I was going to wear it on the show I was looking for it and I can't find it I might have left it in my car sorry stanio that's there you go you can double up for me. But yeah I do have it I just unfortunately do not have it on today so good subscribe to the team Stan you tube channel. And you spell that E S Z T A N Y O we're still working on him to get some Stan yo yo's to the live shows but he will have some hats. And even if you can't make a live show for a hat he still has the referral program where you send somebody that's looking to buy or sell a home to him and you'll get that hat.

And really here's the biggest thing to take away like you know I can do all the talking points for Eric that we do every week but you know everyone when they're have a friend or relative that's buying or selling a house they think they know a guy right like they have a friend or a former coworker who's gone into that side of things and that's a really risky play to make when you're trying to do something that big. So trust somebody that knows what they're doing Stan yo's got the history he's not just a growl pal but he's somebody who's really good at what he does too and that's what you want when you're looking for a realtor. So go check out his YouTube channel especially if you have friends that are like moving back to the area we've had a lot of growl pales that are moving back to Cincinnati and he's got a good like neighborhood quiz and he's got lots of great videos on all the different spots that you might want to move to if you're coming back to the area. And definitely send any friends or family who are looking to buy or sell to our guy Eric Stan yo. All right are you ready now to jump into the growl pal questions.

I am. All right let's kick it off. We're going to go with this one from Andrew he says Miles Murphy has been off to a quieter start than I hoped. Like Paul said I've been a huge believer and was disappointed he did not get his option picked up. However I can't understand why there was some hesitancy. Even though the season is still young do you think the cash is how old surge could finalize the decision that Murphy has gone next year. I feel like we're going to see how continue to get more snaps with the ones and that the front office would be more comfortable trying to use Shamar as the run stopping edge in the future to fill Murphy's absence. Yeah I think that's. Boy that cash is how development is going to play into that decision. I it was I mean Miles is. Got a real shot to make himself some some money. It's he's kind of in a weird spot because if he plays really well he's going to price himself out of the Bengals range most likely.

And if he struggles the Bengals are going to have less of an interest in and re re signing him and and going with cash is how cash is how plays better so. It's really hard to tell how it's going to play out a lot of things can happen between now and then. But it has been a little bit of a slower start than than we thought for miles that you get back into a game like we saw in Houston where the Bengals kind of have the lead and kind of have control in the fourth quarter. And then he's going to have a lot of things that he can do for the next quarter. He can really kind of tee off and and make some hay and the other thing is too that. That it's not always about the sacks. I mean you've got all these guys that are capable you got multiple guys in the backfield and sometimes. He would have had a sack on another play but a teammate beat him to the quarterback and take some down so. And you would have liked to see in a faster start for miles but I still think he has it in and I think all these guys I think this past rush is is going to end up being what we expect it to be.

And it's it's going to I don't know you may not have a guy like a trade index and it just has a huge stat number and then you go down eight nine sacks before the next highest I think this this whole group is going to be kind of in the same range by the time the seasons over. I mean it is kind of funny like you know Maffee has some good pressure numbers and you know like how has come on a lot better than we thought with. At least what I was expecting out of the gate but then you have guys like John Allen who's getting a few sacks and and dexter's and his sacked. So there are a lot of different guys here that are going to get their numbers. My question for you just off of him is I know he focuses he laser focuses on how with this being the Murphy replacement. Do you think that this decision would have more to do with Shamar Stewart and his development this season and if he can be somebody that's reliable enough to count on in a bigger role next year. Yeah that factors into it as well you know they I mean it's telling that the shamar didn't get a single snap last week he was active and he only got a few in Houston and that was late when the game was kind of.

Out of reach to score gain fourth quarter and they just put him in there to tee off and he gets a sack. So that his developmental play a lot into it and let's not forget I mean set of Johnson has two sacks already and he's a seventh round pick that is way cheaper than anything else is going to be and if his production starts looking like miles. All that it's there's no decisions made in a vacuum it's going to all those pieces are going to kind of play into what their decision is with miles at the end of the season or in next off season. Yeah shamar being a first round draft picked a can't get on the fields concerning me a little bit I know that he's still working his way back. Yeah most of camp and so at what point do you think I can be rationally disappointed in shamar Stewart because the fan version of me is like he's a first round draft pick he needs to get on that field. But I know he's also got to get back to practicing and get back into game shape and all that stuff so what what point do you think I should be expecting something out of shamar. I would think after the buy at at Baltimore because you next week is Miami and they should be able to win that game easily so number one they should be playing with the lead and they should be able to get a lot of guys in there to pass rush.

Number two it's going to be usually October Miami is going to be really hot so you're going to want to run those guys through and so you know you you would like to see him. Get some more snaps by that point then the buy which you're right he's he missed almost all of the training camp got hurt on the first day so he's still kind of working his way back he's healthy but there's there's being in shape is being in football shape and and they're not the same and so. I think they're just easing him in that's what you would think get a little more reps at Miami get the week off for the buy and then come out and really see spike in playing time at Baltimore. I mean it also doesn't help that that is like the deepest position group on the team defensive line so he's got a lot of guys that he needs to beat out to get those snaps if he was a first round corner back it would be a much easier path to see him getting back into the full quicker. And this next one's from Brian and Charleston.

Part of that good crew of Bengals fans out there he says do you think the Bengals could go after an under performing or under utilized wide receiver like a Brian Thomas junior or Marvin Harrison junior with their current wide receiver injuries and with T's injury history. I don't think T's injury history plays into it I don't know that they'll be there'll be too concerned about that. We need to know more about Colby Young's you know what was going on there's that already ruled him out for this week but they're not they're not looking at him right now at least as an IR candidate which would take him out for four games. I still wouldn't see him making that kind of move getting Mitch tensley back is big he's a guy that can do a lot of things for you and you always talk all the time about the trust that these receivers need to have and the Joe Barone is to have in these receivers and Barro said it yesterday that when it comes to Mitch tensley his trust in him is tried and true. And you know he had a one handed touchdown catching it's a jaguar is last year and week two in that game was from Jake Browning it wasn't from Drew burrow but we've seen Mitch tensley make plays and getting him back I think kind of stems the need to go out and get someone and and someone like a Brian Thomas or Marvin Harrison I just I don't know that you're going to go that route anyhow just because you have to marinte and you know those those guys are.

Marvin still on the rookie contract that they're just I just don't see them going after a name like that that's going to cost them more money that that third role that third receiver has a specific role and you know and let's not forget I mean Yoshi's it was a thumb and there's no reason to believe that he won't be back once once his four weeks day on I are his up so. Be a little bit like pushing the panic button at this point I think that getting tensley back was a really helps and then Dante Myers will see what he can do it with his with the expanded role and if you this offense really struggles then yeah then you start looking at making a move like that but I don't expect that to be the case I think that. What we said the beginning of the year this offense is going to be fine it's going to come down to how well this defense can play. Yeah I mean you've got your mario got to you've got my casicki it's not like you're asking a lot out of that third receiver so I don't see them giving up the draft capital to bring in a bigger name guy into a role that's not going to get a ton of attention and it's not as simple as just out there and run route I mean there's blocking and I mean that's what the big reason co co co be young was going to have such a big role last week is he's so much bigger and more physical than Dante Myers and so.

Bring in a guy in mid season and throw them into a scheme and trying to get them to learn on the fly it's just it's not ideal right especially the hierarchy of positions you might want to trade for if you're really trying to make a run there's definitely other position groups i'm targeting ahead of receiver I get it though I get why fans ask those questions I saw that Tyree kill was talking about wanting to get to come back in like already there's bangles fans are like who could you imagine him with Joe borrow out there and who knows what he's got left in the tent. So those are always going to be there this next questions a little bit longer one this one's from Paul C. He says I know you guys have spoken about this extensively in the off season if this season falls flat there's nowhere left for the coaches to hide trying to avoid an overreaction but days after the emotion of Sunday has passed I'm left with the same impression that one was on the coaches. Yes the players have to make plays but the way I'm a maligned and jaded Pittsburgh offense picked apart the bangles brought back the PTSD of the last two seasons I feared at the time that out golden was the easy higher the familiar safe option for Zach and Duke and spare me with the Zach is an offensive guy talk if he knows how an offense works so well he has to be accountable for how his defense plays with the view of how an offensive coordinator attacks him.

The game plan last week on defense was wholly embarrassing. Yeah Dexter Lawrence has made a massive difference on several plays so far but they recover four fumbles in week one what if they don't get two of them they get a botched and a missed feel goal in week two they still give a huge explosives and they still can't stop tight ends in all three games so far. Burrow rightly has said that this season is all in was last week an anomaly or can we really expect this defense to make a difference facing Buffalo Kansas City Baltimore it's not just making the playoffs it's actually being a contender and last week wasn't it. I hope it was one off but they were taken to the wood shed on defense I really fear they don't have the game plan on the defense side of the ball to solve this I hope I'm wrong but changing players spending money and we see the same things. Please tell me I'm over reacting but I see new players with the same problems. Well I agree with that that the the missed tackles that were so prevalent last year we're back on Sunday against Pittsburgh but you got to remember to it is it is still week three and nobody thought that this defense was going to it was going to be great or really good with a flip of the switch it's going to take time it's something that they have to work toward as the season goes along.

The other thing is I know injuries are part of football but you're talking about a defense that that lost its starting safety and Brian cook then the the replacement cow douger comes in he gets hurt and Brian cook has to go back out there basically on one leg Jordan battles suffered a hamstring injury in the game he was gotten through that there was just a lot of things that kind of hamstrung that defense in that game and the Steelers do this to the Bengals they play that quick game they get guys out in space. It's a I don't know if he does this other teams but it's crazy watching him against us in the way they cannot bring that guy down they just bounce off of him like mosquitoes trying to tackle him so I do think that there should be concern but I I would lean more towards the one off let's let's wait and see how this defense comes together you're Baltimore re a great test coming off the by you feel like good they can do it. You feel like good they can you feel good about what they can do at Miami this is a people look at the Jags as a defensive team but that's a quality offensive that good receivers over there to the ball really well and so this will be a test for that defense to see if they can bounce back and get some more pressure on Trevor Lawrence and maybe get a turn over to.

Last time Pittsburgh hit 30 was also against the Bengals last year it's just sometimes matchups aren't great and sometimes it can be a team that isn't necessarily a great team that gives you fits i'm with you on there there was some coaching issues in that game that. That you know Zach admitted he said that was on him that not getting the subs in time to start the two minute drill but you go back and you look at that i need that time out they they went right down they were at the 38 they had plenty of time they still had one time out so that I don't think that was going to cost them had that had thrown out lost the fumble the decision I know a lot of people are banging Darren Simmons and Zach on the decision to go for the punt block but. It was fourth and sixth so you're thinking it you're thinking worst case it's running into the kicker and it's fourth and one it's not an automatic first down it was just. It was saidric Johnson you almost got there but he didn't and then he hits the plant leg instead of you know hitting the kicking leg which would have been a five yard so.

There's never a perfect game called by the coaches the the mistakes they made were amplified on Sunday because of the way things played out but i'm still not. I'm still not out on on this coaching staff i'm still not out on this defense I do kind of. It's hard you hate to say one off because we saw so many of those instances last year but this is a new year let's let's wait and see what it looks like and you know jacksville does the same thing to him then I think the alarm bells can start running. Yeah and even more so like you mentioned that Ravens game after the buy and they're a little bit more settled in who knows how the the secondary is going to end up looking by the start of the game if you know they're missing both safety is both starters i'm going to judge them a little bit differently than I would have in that Pittsburgh game for sure. And I think you're also right about the match up thing too like there are certain matchups like watching Joe burrow go against Buffalo the Buffalo over his career i'm just like supremely confident anytime that we face the bills i don't care who they have i'm just like he's going to win they're going to be fine similarly Washington every time he plays us i'm like this guy's the greatest tight end in the history of football like how is he not the number one tight end in all of fantasy but he only pours it on against us for some reason.

But I do get Paul's question and you know frustration without golden for sure. This next one's from Sydney stew he says i'm in a good place despite a loss to those scumbags from Pittsburgh he didn't write Pittsburgh i read Pittsburgh he wrote a different word starts with an s he says my question without notice is when reviewing the tape does the coaching staff and organization escalate with the NFL clear and obvious foul play that is not called i.e. the textbook hip drop on colby young and the grabbing and lifting of the leg when double teaming dexter and tj and Jonathan Allen do they escalate that with the league to ensure that sort of thing gets stamped out and also when will the NFL replace the zebra uniforms of referees to clown outfits to accurately represent their general competence across the league. Well, but yeah that's not happening with the the changing the scrubs.

They do every week submit plays to the league that they want them to look at or they thought were officiated wrong or. Should have been penalties whatever the case may be so i'm sure that that was sent in the league looks at all those tackles to the league they do not call hip drop anymore. Go back and there's websites where you can look at all the penalties and how many have been called they just don't call it anymore but they find it so if they see a hip drop. They will they will find the guy and those are announced on Saturday so we'll find out if if he got find if they if the league viewed that as a hip drop but it was like that one year and they were throwing flags for it and then they they threw some erroneously and you can't you can't challenge a hip drop and I think. They're just they've taken a step back from that and they're like we're going to we're going to officiate it on tape and if you make a hip drop tackle then you're going to get find and they're hoping that's going to help get it out of the league but I honestly I.

I have not I can't remember last time I saw an actual hip drop tackle flag on the field they just moved away from that. But there are other plays like the one of the lifting dexter Lawrence's leg and I'm sure that that was submitted to the league and I'm sure the officials are going to be looking for that tonight when the Steelers play the Browns if they go back to that it'll be really interesting if they do if the Steelers do it and if the officials call it. So yeah that stuff's all brought up and you know we ask Zach about it from time to time but he just he prefers to kind of keep that business between the team and the league he rarely will say oh yeah the league came out and said that they were wrong on that one so we'll see we'll know when the fines come out Saturday if that was a hip drop in and I tend to think it will be. And we did have another person ask kind of tangential to this with the injuries the bangles had the secondary why is it always Pittsburgh that guys are getting hurt is there something special about that rivalry that always ends with a bangle or two getting dinged up.

Yeah well I mean we've seen the we've seen Keith Gary rip can Anderson's head off and we've seen Heinz Ward break the jaw of Keith rivers and when it's Aaron's Garvin break the jaw of Kevin Hubert. And we've seen those kind of hits I don't know when Brian Cook got hurt when Kyle Doug are those were more soft tissue things that they weren't dirty hits it was just kind of coincidental that that those happen there but you're right it does if you're a Bengals fan it just you kind of expect that you kind of expect there to be at some point illegal or a penalized hit and possibly a rule change because it because that that's the thing. The Ryan Shazir hit on G open hard in the playoff game there's there's been a lot of rule changes. He move on all often on Carson Palmer there have been a lot of rule changes sparked by stealer hits on the Bengals but none of those none of those injuries I think on Sunday outside of the Colby Young one were because of that.

Now a little bit of positivity this of course with tinged with a bit of traditional negativity as well but this is from Andrew says through three weeks Amarius man is shown to potentially be the elite right tackle we had all hoped it seems like we finally drafted a good tackle again. My question is what excuses are you most excited to see this off season by the front office is why they can't work toward an extension I'm partial towards we can't pay everyone or making or them making passive aggressive comments about run blocking this looks like the perfect time for the front office to make one of their principal stands and disgruntled our best drafted offensive lineman in the Zach Taylor era that's from Andrew so you can avoid the excuses part of that question and maybe pertain it more to the extension part do you think that it's not going to be a good example of the fact that you're a pro and that's something that the team will look to get down this off season. I think they should I mean his price tags only going to go up get out in front of it get that guy locked up if he continues the way he is and and proves that he is the guy they thought he was when they drafted him in the first round just get out ahead of it and do it the thing is he was a first round pick and they they've got that fifth round option as a little leverage tool.

And they're back pocket and you'd hate to see them kind of play games and try to nickel and diamond squeeze every last penny out of the negotiation with Mario's mims if he keeps playing like this. He's a guy that you know forget right tack or I think at some point you would switch him over to left and maybe not we talked to we this is going off topic here but we talked to Dan picture about that last week and he said it's not the same NFL where it's about the blind side and then the right the right tackles the mall there's there's good cash rushers all over the field so maybe they do just keep a Mario's at right tackle for the rest of his career but he's one of those guys you know like DJ Turner they Dax Hill they drafted to cardio Davis to you know be a guy that can replace them and to have that down that talent in the pipeline you don't have that tackle right now. They're searching for a swing tackle. You just I don't think you can afford to play games with the Mario's mims you get the deal done you know you threaten him with the fifth year option or whatever it is it's it's just going to sour him when it does come time for him to be able to walk on his own and if he proves it I say lock that guy up I know they don't like to make moves until they have to

I'm as far as what the excuses will be who knows that that is always one about not having the money you can't pay everybody but that's the most important thing is protecting number nine and if he's one of the best guys in the league to do it you've got to just bite the bullet and throw a huge extension his way and just get him wrapped up because it's only going to get more expensive. That's the thing to is like paying your stars is never a bad idea like you look at some of those contracts like Joe burrows contract was the biggest quarterback you know money and then you see like the subsequent years it gets worse and worse the cat gets bigger and that contract looks better every year same with your March chase in the playmaking that he brings and T Higgins deal looks better every single year when you see guys that have less talent making more money getting ahead of it mims is shown who he is. If he does play like this the rest of the season he's worth you know giving him big money and that's something that you feel good about the flip side of that is I do feel like sometimes maybe this team doesn't get enough credit when they do make the right call on that like there were plenty of fans that wanted the team to throw a bunch of extra money at try Hendrickson and lock him up for another couple years and that might not have been the right call I think what Dex is bringing this defense is energized them a lot more than what trade does by himself.

The miles Murphy thing could be another example I know we had a question about that earlier about them not picking up that option maybe that is the right call with the depth that they might have at that position and with how that group develops so I can kind of see why they might take that approach with some guys mims is not that guy though he's not a guy to waffle on so I'm with you I hope they do get that taking care of sooner than later because it like you said it just gets worst. This next question he says love the podcast the Bengals are second and have a great in the NFL at 46% on Sunday they were only at 22% did the injuries to the safety's cut down on this and also should the Bengals sign March on Latamore or digs if they moved acts to the slot. Yeah I don't see that happen in same kind of the same philosophy at receiver that just bringing a guy in mid season there they are with a little more desperate in the secondary than they should be at receiver but. I definitely think that the injuries to the the safeties had had something to do with what was going on on on Sunday that's.

To have Brian cook back there hobbled and and dug her hobbled and you know like I said before battle was playing through a hamstring injury. That that's going to hand that's going to hamstring any defense and it's not excuse for losing but it is an excuse for for how they played and the havoc rate i'm not sure exactly how that is this figured that that mathematical equation on the havoc rate but. The big part of that too was what we talked about earlier with the quick game and Aaron Rogers just gets it all out so fast and you just don't have time to put pressure on him and create havoc so it that all played into it. This next question is about play calling he says obviously procedural stuff has been such a point of failure with this team for the better part of quite honestly eight years under Zach Taylor this rear to ugly had again during the game. We know from Joe's comments previously that this is at least in part due to play calls coming in late presumably having play calls coming from someone other than the head coach who has other tasks on his table would be able to clean this up.

Zach is obviously never wanted to give up play calling which is honestly neither here nor there in this discussion but rather the logistics. Zach's defense of his play calling has always been based on the idea that if anyone else on the staff is going to call plays the play calls would not really be any different anyways because they're all on the same page. My question is would this not actually be the best argument to let someone else make the actual play calls if the outcomes are going to be the same wouldn't you rather take the actual speaking of the play into a headset out of the equation and allow yourself to focus fully on situational management deciding whether you want to challenge the previous play deciding whether you want to go. So for all of the other things that are your job as a head coach i've never heard this actually asked a Zach with regards to the logistics of just actually calling the place. Okay so a lot there. I disagree with the procedural thing being a problem for eight years a for the first several years of Zach Taylor's tenure they were the least or one of the least penalized teams in the league.

As far as the play calling it's not always getting it in late sometimes when you're in loud stadiums like that you have to repeat it and those play calls are long and you have to repeat an entire play call because Joe can't hear it. That that takes an extra several seconds to do that and so there's a lot of things that that come into that the the game management part of it. Zach's not thinking on the fly do I go for fourth down here do I challenge here he has analytics. Sam Francis in in his year and it'll be second down and say eight at midfield and he's already told him fourth and three or more were going for it fourth and two or more it says go for it they have all these numbers of what they should do and then Zach has to make the call in the moment but. But there always a couple plays ahead and it's the same thing with the replays there the guys in the booth or they're seeing the replay sometimes they seem faster than what zaxies on the big screen and they're in his ear like definitely challenges definitely challenges so that's he's getting advice and then it's up to him obviously to make the final call but it's not like he's weighing everything in the moment and trying to come up with the play call so it is a stream blind process there I just I don't see him ever given up the play calling.

I know he's let pitch do it in and preseason games to kind of get him some experience at that he wants to pitch or to be a head coach somewhere sometime so that it's a nice move you did that with Brian Callahan a couple times to. I just I don't see him giving it up and. I don't see the. The procedural part of it being a big issue because they do they have so much information that and it's it's all you would be stunned every week they they go over every fourth down play and they have a database and it's what the analytics say and people. Rant and rave about analytics but it's it's just math it's data it's telling you percentages it doesn't mean that you go for it every time on fourth into at the 46 that you're guaranteed to get it it's like playing blackjack when you got 11 you double because the odds are in your favor doesn't mean you're going to get a 10 every time and so. They have the math they have the numbers on what they should do in the situations then it's on Zach in that moment to go with his gut feeling so I don't think he's overwhelmed in that regard of it.

Yeah you double down on that 10 but if you get the three that's when people are going to fire off insane tweets not that I would ever do something like that if you thought there was a lot to unpack in that email get ready for this one because we are finally opening up this email from Austin which we have teased for weeks. Paul deferred on this several times because he's like that's a J question that's that's too much for me to handle on a who they like. I also selfishly. Kind of shelf this for several weeks just because it's a lot to read so stick with me on this one J. He says hey guys if you pick this one up mark I'm sorry you have to read all this I promise I'm not really high and or crazy I was compelled by this narrative surrounding the bangles in the by week bump or dead count dead cat bounce. The past two years we have collectively been questioning the idea of is the bangles defense actually better after the buy so I did some digging for every season in the Zactailer era I pulled together the offensive and defense of EPA and success rate stats for both pre and post by weeks.

And he says that I know you guys probably already know this but for everyone else when it comes to EPA you want a number in the negatives for the defense the closer to zero or below zero the better. For reference good is anything below you know negative zero negative zero point zero five averages around zero and bad as anything above point zero three. For the data every single year in the Zactailer era has shown that the bangles defense has seen a statistically significant improvement when it comes to EPA after the by week. Yes this even includes the 2019 and 2020 seasons is it a dead cat bounce if it happens nearly every season obviously sample size of games is a factor here as well as schedule and all of that but I did also compare this to a handful of other teams from my own sanity. Two teams I thought were especially interesting to look at the cowboys and the packers these are teams with offensive head coaches and high powered or efficient offenses they've also seen multiple defensive coordinators.

However they're pre and post by EPA splits had much more variance for the defense some good than some bad some good and good some bad and bad etc all this to ask what's our deal I specifically called out the offensive head coach teams because the only constant I can pin my finger on is that tailor obviously Louis here for most of those seasons so at the end of this season I'll run this exercise again and see how you're two of our golden defense performed but I have to wonder if there is something. About how Zach prepares the team as a whole for the season that is guiding this trend any thoughts sorry if this was too much and thanks for all you do for your bodies. I did it wow okay again there's a lot to get to their first and foremost I think that that is a sign of good coaching and not just Zach that the position player coaches you're supposed to get better as the year goes along and. The way Zach is kind of structured the off season in past years they they go lighter and they they go with a kind of an understanding that there they would rather be fresher after the buy in the second half of the season then come out of storming out of the gate hot and you would like to do both but if you have to go with one or the other.

This team has been really good they've gotten better as seasons have gone on they've also been fortunate to have by weeks that are right in the middle most weeks and so that they just lend itself to that. The other thing is that you know I don't know maybe the casual fan doesn't realize but like these these coaches and they're scouting the opponent every single week about the team that they have to get ready for they're watching film and they're breaking it down and that's what the whole focus is on. You get to the buy week and they self scout they start watching their own film and they're looking for their own tendencies and where can we get better and and where we tip in our hand and all those kind of things and the self scouting leads to some corrections and some pivots and we. You know that that makes sense that they would be better after the buy because they've kind of identified some trends that weren't ideal and fixed them we've seen them. And Zach's rookie year in 2019 when they went to LA and they are they went to London to play LA and they ripped up the entire run plan and and switched and then and then the buy week came after London and then they were much better running the ball after that so.

It's kind of what you want you want to be better after the buy and you want to be playing your best football as the season goes on closer working your way towards the playoffs so. i'm a little surprised i would think that every team would be that way but it obviously it's not the case because everybody can't get better after the buy but injuries could derail it and as he as Austin said in his question you know schedule plays a big part of that as well. But i think bangle fans should be happy with with those numbers with those splits that you know that if you're going to pick one you would much rather. Be better at the end of the season after the buy then come out of the gate hot and then fall off after the buy. That's just another reason i'm looking forward to that Ravens game and seeing what this defense really looks like after the buy and. Seeing it if we do get some improvement on that front i do feel better about that Austin and we finally got your question read even though it took me forever to get through it now you can see why i've been punting it down the road for so long.

We both have an ambush question this week Jay i'm going to start with one for you he says Wendy's released a six track emo album where they collaborated with bands and made songs about burgers fries and frosties. This naturally made me think about Jay and his love of live music and our bees if our bees were to make a similar album and Jay was hired by our bees to make it which bands would he have collaborate on the album and which our bees products would he highlight. Well i mean if money was no object that i'm going i'm getting food fighters i'm getting shine down metallic that's that's my wheelhouse there maybe some breaking Benjamin pop a roach i think that would be a hell of a. And an album as far as the products i mean you got to go with the roast beef just general roast beef that has to be a you know pop a roach could do slice my beef into pieces. That that that would be a nice fit i think the jalapeno poppers at our bees are among some of the best jalapeno poppers i've had anywhere so i would definitely want a song about those i'm i don't know what the lyrics would be or the melody but.

That's definitely on there i think their turnovers are people sleep on their turnovers you don't think about dessert at a fast food place by love arby's turnovers. The shakes are really good to everybody the jimoka shake it's the only place you can get that is at arby's i love the orange cream sickle shake in the summer so i would go there. And then maybe just a song about we've got the meats and you know kind of like a. R. E. M. into the world as we know it just the rapid fire lyrics or we didn't start the fire by Billy Joel something along those lines and just ripping through all the different meats and sandwiches they have would be a good maybe a final song on the album. So if we have any growl pals that have connections to our res corporate put it in their ear that we want Jay to make this album go full Rick Rubin and kind of develop the voice of this that would be a fun little site project for you Jay i think that has some real potential there. And i did get one he said mark we know that you're the top Cincinnati comedian but i also love my Turner and Josh Sneat to people we've talked about on the show before he says are there any other Cincinnati comedians we should follow.

So i think the biggest one there is Blake Hammond one of the best joke writers in stand up comedy that people don't know he's a Cincinnati guy so follow him if you're not he is hilarious Jeff tape is another since he guy think he lives in Portland now opens for time to grow up and he is awesome. And i think Alex stone is another one i know he is stop doing stand up i think he's more in the TV side of things now TV comedies and stuff in L.A. but he is a big bangles fan as well so he's one i would follow i think he's got a podcast out there with a couple good stand ups to so you can go listen to him as well growl pal spotlight this week. Shout out to growl pal Cody i said after 17 days of the UC blood center or UC blood cancer healing center he's been discharged and is recovering at home we mentioned Cody during our growl pal spotlight a few weeks ago so that's a good update for Cody and we continue to wash him the best in his recovery so he can get back to section 308 at pay core because they need you out there Cody.

And Jay what else should we shout out this month. Well nothing specific but i were recording this on Thursday it's October 1st and October is breast cancer awareness month and i just think that any any of those. Charities that deal with breast cancer i mean they they would appreciate any donations. You think about it i there's not too many people out there that don't have a friend or a loved one that has been affected by breast cancer whether they passed from it or they beat it and they're still dealing with it it's just a heinous disease and. A good cause to donate to maybe finally finding a cure for this more or more women are surviving it and living but we would like to get that up to 100% and always a good cause to donate to to one of those charities. I do a lot of the benefits for cancer charities and things of that nature so I get to talk to some of those people. One of the most encouraging things I hear them say is that they're going to change this cancer to just more of a chronic disease something that's more manageable and stuff like that so.

That's why it is important to support all of those charities and the people that are doing that great work power rankings this week we power rank things because power rankings are dumb. And Lonnie on Twitter said he wanted us to do french fries types of french fries so we'll do top two in bottom two french fries j where you at with your top two. I love ketchup if I go to a restaurant i'm getting a meal with its got fries and I feel the ketchup and it's half full i'll be like i'm going to need more i'm going to need another bottle i just i love ketchup on fries so. I'm going number one waffle fries because you can just scoop up a big glob a ketchup right there there they taste good to. But there are my favorite that would be my number one ranking you want my number two or do you want my bottom i'm going with number two and then i'll do my top then we'll do the worst. Number two i'm going to go it's close between the like the shoestring fries and then the big thick cut crinkle fries and i'm going to go crinkle because again there's more surface there the shoestring ones you scoop it in and all the ketchup just falls back off don't feel like you get enough so i'm going to go with the.

The crinkle cut thick fries. Dang we were almost so close to being on the exact same wavelength i'm with you there waffle fries rule those are the top it's tough to really find a good fast food waffle fried chick filet comes close but. Waffle fries are the way to go and i am a thin crispy fried guy as well so you go to like a Freddy's or jowelos they're staking shake you can usually get some pretty good fries like that i'm not quite as big of a ketchup advocate so that's why i'm going with the thin ones. Over the crinkles i think crinkles are a little bit tougher for me to pull off i think shake shake can do a good crinkle but a lot of places cannot let's go to the bottom what are your bottom to. Well first i want to put a little plug into for you said hard to find good fast food waffle fries are stomping grounds in Athens Ohio the pub has incredible waffle fries so anybody that gets down there check those out. My bottom to this i don't know i might get some angry emails on this but i'm going tater tots i just never been a tater tot fan and they're hard they're little stubby things they're hard to get ketchup i always get catch upon your fingers when you're dipping up.

They're just a little too dense not a fan at all and then they people start loading them with chili and and cheese and they just. You need tricks need what we need tricks like you're you have to guzzle it up because tater tots suck so it's like yeah we'll throw in chili we'll throw in bacon well they're now there's cheese on them yeah you need all that because tater tots are trash. Are you with me was that your bottom to yeah i'm with you 100% if you're not an eight year old eating a school. I'm not a tater tots. My my other one next to bottom and might surprise people to because I do love arby's and they're known for these but I just never have been a fan of the curly fries. I love their potato cakes but the curly fries just. They're consistent they they they are these does a good job making when I know people have a taste for them but just never been my favorite I would much rather have their their crinkle cut fries. See I do like the arby's curly fries not enough to put them in my top but definitely not my worst my other worst is the McDonald's fries and I say this is somebody who just has high standards for the McDonald's front try because I worked there for three months when I was 15.

I was a fry cook and I made them well and when they're done well they're they're tough to beat you know they they hold up but there's just no consistency at the McDonald's anymore and when they're done poorly there's some of the worst fries in the game so maybe a controversial take but McDonald's stinks with their fries so they're down there too. Mathracoon weird animal story of the week I didn't have one but you said that you did come across one. I did it was a last Friday this was in India and the story says a female monkey wandered into a liquor store and the owner that startled customers the owner went up to the monkey with biscuits and the monkey bit the owner literally bit the hand that was feeding it. And so the owner backed off and they're all just kind of looking at this monkey like what's it going to do. And it says the monkey then grabbed a sealed bottle of alcohol reported by witnesses to

be vodka, managed to open it and drank straight from the bottle after becoming heavily intoxicated and drowsy. She climbed onto cartons of boxes of liquor bottles inside the shop and fell asleep. That point, a crowd comes around, starts taking pictures of the monkey sleeping on the boxes. They eventually got a group there that could rescue and relocate the monkey without any kind of harm. But it ended well. It just, I'm stunned at a monkey that would understand how to open a liquor bottle and a vodka bottle. And then you would think they're used to drinking water. That first sip of vodka would, you would think a monkey would think that was pretty gross and just put it down to just keep jugging the vodka. I would love to see video of that. Somebody had to have taken video of it. Yeah, it's got to be out there. We got to track that down. But you know what, let the mom have her day. Sometimes a mom needs to blow off some skin. The biscuits aren't going to get the job done. You got to go for the heavy stuff.

It does. I don't know a lot. I've not been to India before. So I don't know how their liquor stores work. But you got to think that this was not the first time a monkey's come into it. Now when you started his story, I thought it sounded like the setup of a joke. Like a female monkey walks into a liquor store and then there's some killer twist to it. But it has to have happened before if he's got biscuits ready to like distract it. That doesn't seem like a normal liquor store move that you just got some biscuits around. It's probably happened before his, my guess. And maybe biscuits are like, you know, in England, they call things different things. Maybe a biscuit in India is more like a cracker or something. I don't know. But I eat lunch. Yeah. It's probably if it's happened in that store before or if that monkey has hit different stores, maybe that's how it knows how to open the liquor bottles because that's part of its regular routine. Yeah. And it just keeps getting kicked out of different liquor stores. So it's a pick a new one just to be civil. Before we wrap up, I did have a couple plugs for stand up that I wanted to throw across to the growl pals. If you're in the Cincinnati area, I'll be a Commonwealth comedy club on Saturday, October

3rd with Brian Bates. There are shows at 430 and 730 and I think those are all ages shows. So if you have a cool 10 year old, you could bring them to that show. Also, I'll be a goban ad as headlining October 15th through 17th. That's the by week. So Bengals fans that live in the Cincinnati area. Growl pals would love to see some of you at those shows. Send me an email and I can hook you guys up with free tickets for that as well. And if we have any Indiana growl pals, I'm going to be at Summit City Comedy Club in Fort Wayne on October 9th. That's a big one for me. So any Fort Wayne growl pals, keep an eye for that. I think tickets are on sale soon. And I'll be at Brookville, Indiana, October 10th. And the big one for me is October 18th shooting my new special with Nate Bargazze's Nate Land. So if we have any Nashville growl pals, please get tickets to that or any other growl pals that just want to travel to Nashville during the by week. Great city to vacation in and would love to see you at that. All right, jumping into dad life this week. What do you got, Jay?

So tonight is the Columbus Blue Jackets season opener in the NHL. And my son's birthday is in April. You know, it was his first one. My wife was a bit of a spin thrift. She always made their birthdays really special, but it was the little touches. It wasn't by in the big gifts. And so I wanted to get him something pretty special this year. I know he's a huge Blue Jackets fan. And so I ordered him a Zach Wyrinsky jersey, Blue Jackets jersey. And it was like the stitch, the expensive. It was over $300. And it came a little late. And the Blue Jackets fell apart. And he never got to wear it to a cashier. And then there were all these trade rumors that they were going to trade Zach Wyrinsky. And I was just like, no, all this money on his jersey. And they're going to trade this guy away. And he's never going to get to wear it to a game. Fortunately, they did not trade him. He is back. He is a captain.

And he will be on the ice tonight. And my son will be there with the jersey on. The other part of that is my daughter turns 30 this month. And you know how you got to keep things equal. And I'm really struggling to come up with a good idea. It's going to be a gift that's going to be kind of in the same range as that jersey. So if anybody has any gift ideas out there for a 30-year-old female volleyball coach, I'm open to all suggestions. I have a couple ideas. But I really want to make this one special for her too. I feel like I hit the ball out of the park with her and her wife's anniversary gift in May. But I'm stressing. I'm stressing. A little her birthday is coming up in three weeks and I don't have anything. So anybody has any suggestions out there for a really cool gift for a 30-year-old. I'm all ears. Send them to the growler podcast at gmail.com. Let's bail Jay out of a tough situation here. Also, if the blue jacket is starting getting really good, then I feel like it's got to be

another jersey. You could be saving another franchise. If the first time he wears it, now the blue jacket start rocking and rolling. Like that could be a magic jersey right there. But also, don't feel too much pressure, I would say, for the birthday. Because if you knocked it out of the park on an anniversary gift, I feel like we should only be on the hook for one killer gift a year, whether it's anniversary birthday Christmas. If you do one great one, that's enough. Like my wife, her birthday is right around Mother's Day in our anniversary. I'm like, I can't knock it out of the park three times. I'm not Barry Barnes over here, just juicing it up. So if you can get one good gift, I think you feel good about that. But still, maybe the growl pals will bail you out here and come through with a killer gift idea for a 30th birthday. So please help Jay. My dad life this week, I took my kids to Comic Con this past weekend, the Comic Expo at the Cincinnati Convention Center, which have you ever done a Comic Con before? I have not, no, but I've seen videos and fixtures.

I have not. And no judgment from me, you know, like I'm glad that those people have that thing. You know, they get to like really enjoy that stuff. My kids are really big into like Star Wars and some of those other types of cartoony things. So they really wanted to go and a couple of them dressed up as, you know, different little characters, more like just wearing their Halloween costumes essentially. But they had a killer time. They got to meet the lady that was the voice of one of their favorite cartoons. And she was like really sweet with them and gave them a little friendship bracelet and spent a lot of quality time with them. So they were blown away. They're like, wow, we got to meet somebody famous and I was like really famous. But it was a cool event overall. I will say that like I was most excited because Ernie Hudson was there. The black ghost buster. And I was like, oh, I loved ghost busters growing up. I wanted to go talk to him, but I did not because the only thing I really was going to talk to him about was the fact that we have met before because I met Ernie Hudson in 2008 at the Playboy Mansion at a party.

So that's not a story I can go up and talk to him about in front of my daughters. And he was like, hey, remember when we were at the mansion together and how cool that was. So that was a story I had to keep to myself. You should you should hit him up on social media and see if he remembers. I know. Well, he is pretty old now. I think he's almost 80. So I don't know what social media he's on that he, but I would like to be the case. Because I remember that night. And I think he even brought his kid to that too, who was I think he was in his early 20s. But yeah, that was that was a wild one, not the type of story you bring up a comic con in front of your children. Is there exciting? They're heroes. But Jay, we did it. We did another killer episode of Who They Light flawless episode from start to finish. Thank you for being in for this week. I wish you the best in your survivor running now. Like you are the last hope for the growl palnation here to bring that championship ring back to the show. I think you could probably display it back there somewhere, at least wear it on your

hand for every show. Oh, bring it up periodically. And yeah, I'm wearing it. If I win it, we hope to see all you growl pals at our live show on October 8th at 50 West in Worcester. Also, if you have not tuned into the rest of the shows this week, go back in, check them out with great episodes. Just knocking it out of the park, the rewatch with Charlie on Monday was awesome.
