The Miami Dolphins are 0-3. But for the first time this season, Dave Hyde and Kim Bokamper walked away from a loss feeling encouraged. On the latest episode of Out to Pasture Presents: Nothing to Hyde, award-winning columnist Dave Hyde and former Miami Dolphins defender Kim Bokamper break down Miami's loss to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs—and explain why the final score doesn't tell the entire story. Hi, this is Dave Hyde. Welcome back to nothing to hide podcasts on that out to pasture network. I write a column also on Substack.com Dave Hyde.Substack.com. Subscribe here. Subscribe there. Subscribe to Kim Boe Camp and mainly because here we are for for once first time Boe after Dolphin game. I think we have some good things to talk about that the word of the day I think is progress. Yeah, still lost by 14 to the Kansas City Chiefs. Patrick Mahol still had the moments when he needed to to win the game, but for the first you saw okay that a team starting a young team, inexpensive team starting to come together and and give me some good news. Yeah, I was I was pleased. I was pleased with the performance. I was pleased with the guy way the guys played they played hard all day. Look, it was a hot it was I was down in that field. It was a hot hot day for both of those teams and obviously more so for
Kansas City because that's the way the stadium is is set up. But they but they played hard. You know, they had they went through some they had some tough situations that came up in the game that they had to overcome. But the point that the point being that you're in the game in the fourth quarter with an opportunity to win the football game against a very very good football team. I think that's telling and you know, maybe it's you know, maybe it's just you know something that you just blow smoke up their ass or whatever. But I think that we're seeing guys develop a little bit more, you know, I think I think Malik will us I thought he played well. I thought he you know, he was able to run the ball and and do some things and through some really nice balls and and so yeah, I think I think the the takeaway is and then I knew what you know, you knew what the you know, the story was going to be what's going to be well look we don't we you know, we we're never happy when we lose a game. However,
the progress is the key word. I think they I think they held up very well and I think, you know, I think they I think they earned the respect to the Kansas City Chiefs when they walked out of that stadium. Yeah, the you know, you look at Jacob Rodriguez Interception had some nice tackles, one on one on Kenneth Walker, Chris Bell, 44 yard catch over the middle, you know, he's coming and he had 67 I think was 67 yards of catches and and the first drive I thought remember, um, Devon H and goes out five plays into the game and and not good news for the one legitimate playmaker on the offense going out. So but the first drive 92 yards and and to your point, Malik Willis had three first down completions on that drive and he ran for another. Now Malik Willis
is going to be the story. See he missed some deep throws. Yeah. Um, so you know, there's stuff to clean up that he's running a lot and he got hit and you're seeing quarterbacks go down and speaking of which, let's get into the Patrick Mahomes hit by by Chop Robinson because that's a talking point. Not so much that it affected the game. There was another penalty on the play so Kansas City was going to get a first down anyway. But it's a talking point of what's going on in football? Well, well, first of all, too, this is, you know, when you look at the game, um, you know, the penalties, penalties are still an issue, you know, I mean, you know, there was progress in the game, but I think I think every week I think we had eight penalties the first week. I think we had eight penalties last week and now we have eight penalties this week, maybe with seven last week or whatever. But the point being is it's not the number of penalties, although it is, it's the times that they get the penalties where you're, you know, you're
progressing. They had, when were you going to first down and all of a sudden, you know, someone jumps off sides or whatever and it takes you, you know, it takes, takes you back, you know, now it's first of 15 and those types of things that they, they're, they're, they're, they're drive killers, they're, they're game killers. Um, and look, Kansas City had their share of penalties too, but, but they're Kansas City and their Patrick Mahomes and their Kelsey and, you know, they're, they're, they're, they're, they're the very good football team. But I think it affects the dolphins more so and it has affected them more so, but getting back to the job thing, as a defensive line to myself and having to rush the pass, there are a lot of times. I don't I don't really understand what they expect these players to do, change directions in mid-air. You know, I, so I agree with Chop. He came through the round a little game, came free right up the middle of the field and, and right into, into Mahomes's face, hits him would not below,
hits him below the, below the head. And then, and then, and then literally stretches his arms out to, you know, to, so, so, but I think the idea with the NFL is looking for is, you know, come down on him, slide off to the side of it, like this, is what, what I've, I've understood about this. And so that's what, that's well in in in in in in in principal, but when you, when you try to do, I don't know how you do that, it's, it's such a split-second decision that you have to to make in that situation. I don't see it. I think it's, I think it was a bad call. I think the lead needs to figure something out because if you don't want them to hit the quarterbacks then just tell them, hey, don't play tag, whatever. I don't know. Yeah, it's a hard one because you've seen already, here we are in the third week, a lot of teams have lost their quarterbacks. Sure, yeah. So we're trying to do.
So what do you do? Yeah, and try to protect the quarterbacks and try to play football too. So that was right on the line of, it's sort of in a different way that Dolphin, us talking about the Dolphin season, we're talking about progress, even though we're not, we're kind of blurring the lines of winning and losing and all that. And where do you go? Where does this go from here? David, I think it's important to us because we only have one sack now in three games, I think, right? Oh, it's zero still. Zero still. I mean, Jordan Brooks had a sack and that was taken away because, that's right, that's right. It's taken away by a penalty. Do you point to your point about penalties? And they had a touchdown taken away because Malik Washington, Chris Bell came and set, but Malik Washington went in motion before Chris Bell was set for a second. And the play went for a touchdown,
but it's going back and therein lies the penalties. You know, it's not the amount of penalties, it's the times that they, you take those two penalties away, you've got the sack, you've got the touchdown, and hell, who knows, they may be saying, you know, they may be, you know, jumping up and down time after and winning the game, you know. The good news, the jets lost again, so they're coming up, the chargers look awful, they're coming up into somewhere. Why did you not just look so awful? Mike McDaniel's offense, 13, 13 and 14 points. Wow. Maybe it was Tyree Kill all along. Maybe that was the story to, we look back, and that was the story. I'm just, I'm just waiting to see how long Jim Harbaugh is going to, going to stand for these, I look at his stat, I look at Herbert's stat line every week, and it looks like a lot like two is when we had two down here last year, so I don't think Mike's on the hot seat a little bit. All right, Kim, I also want to call him about this on Substack,
about Don Schule being cheated out out of two wins, and it still blows my mind to be talking like this, one of the iconic records in sports, the all-time coaches win record, and the NFL counted what was called the play-up all the consolation game in the 60s. It was in the record book, in the record book, and then in 82 it abruptly went out, the NFL people I talked with have no idea why it was taken out of the record book, and yet that record's wrong, and it should be the Dolphins physical address right now is 347 Don Schule Avenue. I think they're gonna change it at some point to 349 Don Schule Avenue, we'll see. Well, I applaud you for bringing that up in defending Coach Schule's record and trying to get him those two more wins, because they do, like there's a lot of things that, when I started probably, first NFL game I saw probably was, I don't know, I was probably seven years old or something,
and I don't know how many years ago that was, but it was a lot of years, and it was a whole different game, but no one was watching it, there was no one in the stands, and so a lot of things were changed, but if you played the games, if they were official games, if they counted for something, then they should be in the record books, and look, we got a guy and it came into the Hard Rock Stadium, yes, Andy Reed, who's about 40 game, 47. Now he's 37 right now. 37 games behind Don Schule, and those two extra games that Schule is owed, maybe the ones that keeps him at the top, these things are going, but it's like Andy Reed's not going anywhere anytime soon, but you're right, there's a lot of crazy things that, so I didn't even realize when I was playing, they didn't even count sacks in the statistics
during probably about a quarter of my career, maybe half of my career. Starting in 82, they started to count the sacks. Right, yeah, so I came into 76, so I had five years, six years of, because I'm going to go, I saw someone go, they've got 13-second, 13 sacks. Really? I mean, that was a shitty fucking player, it's like 10 years and only get 13 sacks. Yeah, you wish you would have those at the Starrier career and that became a great contract point. Hey, look how many sacks I get, that's all people talk about that. Yeah, no, no, there wasn't, no, it wasn't even, didn't even come up, didn't even come up into contract negotiations. What, what did you talk about the contract? Come on, give us a good contract story, you must have gone up. I'm gonna tell you, I'm gonna give you a contract story, so my rookie year I came and I signed the contract, so I'm my contract, and was your rookie, you always put in the contract
that if you make the all rookie team, you get a bonus for it, so we had that in my contract, and so I think they still do it this way in contracts, they may know better than me, but in the NFL, if you get a three year deal, it's not a three year contract, it's three one year contracts, three standalone contracts by the time of the summer. So we have my all rookie thing, all rookie thing in there, and my first preseason, my first play in the Orange Bowl, we opened up the preseason in Detroit, opened up the Silver Dome, that's how far that was, and that didn't even, it's not even there anymore, and then my first game was in the Orange Bowl, I ran down on the opening kickoff, blew my knee out and lost my whole first year, because once you wanna injury reserve there, you couldn't come up, so I lost my whole first year. So the next year we go, and I come in,
and I make the all rookie team, right? And so, I'm sitting around, and my agent calls me, he said, hey, have you gotten a check for your, for being on the all rookie team? And I go, nah, I ain't seen a check, I don't know. And so he calls Joe Robbie, and he says Joe, he says, you know, both didn't get his all rookie, you know, a conversation for becoming, being on the all rookie team, and he said, oh, no, that was in the first contract, it wasn't in the second contract, right? So, every year afterwards I told my agent, put it in all rookie in the contract, every year. That's great, that's great. All right, we mentioned Andy Reed. Yeah, hey, we gotta mention Dvon H.M., Dvon H.M., when we skipped over him, and that's, I mean, you know, how do you skip over that?
This is a devastating injury for this football team. When I first saw him, I was on the sideline, I watched him take him into the tent, and then he came out, and then they took his helmet, so I knew it was something, but I thought it was maybe, because he kinda got, his neck got kinda twisted and that thing, I thought it was neck. And then what I heard it was his knee, and then he just said, oh my gosh, and then you see him call later, but this is, if there's anybody on this team that you can't lose, it's Dvon. Yeah, where do they go? They had one playmaker who was proven, you could almost build an offense around his talent, they had to share, and now it's rookies, it's unproven backs. And the question is, Jalen Wright hopefully comes back, right? Ollie Gordon, Ollie Gordon looked pretty good. I mean, it looked really good, and he got the health opacity caught there.
Malik Washington, I mean, yeah, walked, jumped in there and played a little bit, but yeah, it's gonna be an issue. And it's gonna be an issue because, you know, as we've talked, the number one issue of the season is Malik Willis, and do they have what they consider an elite court, and at some point you just gotta, there's not gonna be enough talent around them to say, okay, who is he, what can he do? Yeah. And so we'll see where this goes. We talked about Andy Reed last week. Brian Flora's this week. Yeah. And you know, he is not gonna call off the dogs at all, and he's got a defense that can, can, you know, tear up good offenses. And so what do we think of them Flora's years? And what do we think of Flora's now? Yeah, I may be the, I may be the lone guy paddling on this raft in the ocean,
but I really like Brian Flora's. I like his messaging. I like what he did with his football team. You know, he proves that TNT takes no talent. And so, you know, we come into a team that was one of the most penalized penalties a year before, goes through the season. He's one of the least penalized teams in the league. They got up to a slow start, but then they got hot, and they became a very good football team. Then, and then all of a sudden, you know, there's these two tough on the team. So they jettison them out. And look, I would stand on Brian Flora's side every day of the week. You know, I kind of became a friends with them, and I'm looking forward to seeing him this week. I hope he's not successful this week, but like I know he's still fighting it in the court system, but I just think he got it. I just think I think him much like,
much like who's our defensive coordinator that was too tough. Big fan, too. Big fan, too. Much like Vic Fangio got a raw deal because they were too hard on the players, and the players didn't like that. So instead of telling the players to just suck it up, you know, he got jettison too. Flora's got jettison end up in Minnesota, and Vic went to Philadelphia, you know, by the way, he won a Super Bowl the next year. So, you know. Yeah, my thoughts on that are, you could not have brought the wrong coach into this atmosphere, then Brian Flores. He's great coach, hard-knows, just wanted to lose, and he wasn't gonna say we're gonna lose, okay? And that led to division inside the Dolphins between him and the front office. And Brian really, great coach, you see what he's doing. He needed to work on interpersonal skills. I mean, if I had to coach, his offensive line coach, four practices in because he wouldn't play Michael,
Michael Dieter, one star. So he needed help. The problem is he was a, there's a division inside the team, the people who normally would help him were offset because he was, he wanted to win, and they wanted to lose, and it became a mess. Anyways, another thing, ball, panthers start, Florida panthers. It's almost like forget last year, all the injuries. They're coming back. And for the third straight year, they're gonna be in the opening game where they're raising the Stanley Cup. Of course, it's Carolina. They open Tuesday, bo, they got the Kachak brothers. Who would your brother hang out with? The Kachak brothers, the Kelsey brothers, the Manning brothers, the Blackwood brothers, the Hanson brothers from Slap Shot movie. Who do you think you got? The Hanson brothers. Now you know, you make, now you make a little difficult there. I'm a big fan of the Hanson brothers. Slot cars and, Slot cars and, and, and, Fisticuffs and everything.
Great movie, by the way. And I do have a, I do have a soft spot for the Blackwood brothers, as I played with them. And then they were, very, very, they're very enjoyable. Maybe just one notch below the, the Hanson brothers, as the way they played a little bit. But, but I'm gonna go with the Kachak brothers, you know, that whole family, the dad, the whole family, they're all, it's, they're, they're just hockey, hockey, everything, and just tough guys, and you, you see, you know, Keith Giro, you know, he starts getting a fight down in the, in the, in the ice, and the dad looks like he wants to jump over the, jump over the glass and get involved in it. And so, it's, it's not just the, the Kachak brothers, this is a whole Kachak family type of, of an endorsement. Yeah, I, since you take, I can't take them, but I can imagine, look, I've been around Matthew with the Panthers,
and he wants everybody to have fun. I mean, that's really, he's one of those guys who, who wants to, so, but I'll take the Kelsey, but the many brothers scare me a little in that, they might be telling jokes that go over my head, and they'd be making the sides to each other, and they're, they're not people, they're not people that we like in them. Right. The Kelsey brothers seem, oh, Ohio guy, I'm an Ohio guy, and down to earth and earthy jokes, and get down there, have a few beers, that would be fun. So, Yeah, you know what they, look, they came from small schools, they weren't, you know, they weren't in the Michigan's, and the, you know, Ohio states, and all those, and so, and yeah, look, as much as even, even with Travis Kelsey, and Taylor Swift, he still seems like he's just, I was watching him warm up during, during the game, and he's just, just one of the guys, and yeah, I think both of those guys, you know, that the beard is, you know, the beard, beard, so who's the, the brother Jason,
is he, oh, Travis, a lot of money for the money he's making, or, or, I don't know how that works, because if, I mean, I said, if Travis wasn't with, Taylor Swift, would those two be, as important to the culture, as they are right now? Well, not to the culture of, of pop culture, but to the podcasting culture they would, because their show was doing pretty well, we'd like to get up there with our podcast, and so, nothing to hide, we'll see you next week.
