1:16Like to call this hour and especially on Tuesdays, because we are joined by Pat Kerwin, NFL Radio's Move in the Chain, CVS Sports NFL Today Show, and Pat joins his courtesy of Pinsers with locations from Tampa to Key West. Pinsers where you can't fake fresh. Good morning, Pat. How are you? Good morning, Mark. You're doing well and enjoyed the weekend games. Week one was all about scoring 53 points of game. And last week was all about defense. And we dropped that number to 32 and change. Almost 33 points of game. So think about that. Three touchdowns less in one week. So give the defense one game tape and they will build a better plan. I've always felt and still unknown will change my mind. The defense gets more out of it scouting a tape than the offense does. The defense gets a chance to see what your habits are, your protections, everything else. So when I was doing the advanced stuff for the defense, I felt like we always were

2:18able to get more out of it than the offensive guys. So I think you saw a little of that. And we had about, I don't know, five or six teams that were in single digits scoring. And some of them were like Chicago went from 59 to three. Unbelievable. Unbelievable. And obviously they lose Caleb for, we don't know how long, but Pat, here we are two weeks in. You know, we've had a habit for 20 years, you and David and I talking about backup quarterbacks. Sam Darnold out Caleb Williams out Jackson, dark out Daniels out, Kyler Murray out. I mean, we're two weeks in. We have five quarterbacks that are going to miss games already. Well, let's, let's start from this. You can write all the rules you want. And they think writing legislation and protection of quarterbacks protects quarterbacks. They forgot that the defense of guys don't care about those rules. And if you want to keep throwing the ball and getting these quarterbacks, the quarterback is the most vulnerable guy on the field

3:22when he's in a throwing position. His eyes are downfield, his arm is up, and now here they come. And so you're going to land up getting hurt. You want to, you want to protect quarterbacks, run the ball more, but they don't really want to hear that. So yeah, it's a risky business. I like, I can't wait to really want to tighten, tighten, Beijing. I love that guy since I couldn't believe he wasn't drafted. So we're going to see a couple guys, Marriotto, stand by. Jamis with those wide eyes last night. Well, the Jamis Winston experience. And I love Jamis. I think when he gets done playing, he's going to be phenomenal in the media world. I don't think he should be an analyst. Let him do his thing, whether it's on state, I just think he's got, he's got great charisma. He's got great smile. He could be great at that. But boy, oh boy, you're right, deer in the headlights. Pat, can I want to get into one specific play? I want to start with this game because I think you and I both think pretty highly of the Baltimore Ravens and that franchise. And I am curious because I took a lot of notes Saturday and Sunday. I'm trying

4:27to get better at my job and being prepared for the week. And I had a note on Sunday that said Ravens, fourth and one punt, Saints, fourth and one go for it. Jesse Menter, a new coach, not a new coach, but a new head coach in a tight game at home, ops on fourth and one reasonably late in the game, to punt. And that ends up losing that game to New Orleans. I thought they should have gone for it. They do have this guy named Lamar. They have this other guy named Derek Henry. I'm going for it on that fourth and one. I thought it in the moment. And when they punted with about five minutes left, it caused them the game. That coaching air should they have gone, you know, the analytics probably say go, but I know what you think about analytics most times, Pat. They don't have all the variables in their little reports. They only have past information. They don't understand when James Winston, as examples, running off the field after a series and you see how wide ID is. Is that in your

5:29analytics report? No. So let me go back to Baltimore though. So you asked me about a guy. One guy went for it, head coach, former quarterback, offensive guy. One guy punted, defensive guy. Defensive guys don't mind punting. They like to play the long field and they are always going to be instinctively in that area. The offensive guys owning the football is the most important thing to them and will take more risk most of the time. But to me, the game didn't get lost there. It hurt the game. That last interception by Lamar. I'm going to say this. So we're 20 seconds left in the game. He's on the 37-yard line. That whole escape lane on the left side BC gap was wide open. And in the old days, Lamar would have taken off and run right there and got about a 15-20-yard game stepped out of bounds and put himself in a position with eight seconds to go to run two plays.

6:32What does he do now? He stands in the pocket and lobs up a terrible football. I had a, I know Lamar well enough. I've talked to him a lot about this subject. Lamar is going to watch the tape, which he already did two or three times. He's already said to himself, the next time I'm in this, I'm running. Because that's how he used to win. And he said to me once, I will always depend on my feet when we're in a crunch. And that was a crunch and he depended on his arm. And it was a bad throw and it ended the game. He had 20 seconds. I know how fast that guy is. He could, if you go back and look at the play, he would have run so easily for 20 yards of that's 37. And now it's on eight seconds on the 17. That would have changed things. He could have, but to me, Lamar is going to go back to who he really is. I think we both of us know they always, all of us revert back. We do the same thing in golf. We can take all the lessons we want.

7:32In a pinch, whether it's good or bad, we're going to be the guy we always were. Yeah, that means I'm not chipping and putting from like 20 yards off the green. But that's all, for another day. All right. I'm filling that blank. Yeah. By the way, game of the day to me, maybe it was that night between the Colts and the Chiefs because that was an excellent game. But at four o'clock, everybody's talking about what Brady said in there. I didn't listen to a damn word. I didn't care about commanders and cowboys. I was locked in to Jags and Broncos. And Pat, if we put different jerseys and different names on those teams, I think it's all people would have been talking about on Monday. That was old school football. I thought it was an excellent game. I don't think any less of Jacksonville for losing on the road. But that same interception you talked about with Lamar in the first half, bone X through that pass. His interception was just a god awful throw. He learned from an in game, had a great fourth quarter. Those are two playout to me. You know, hey, I know it's only week two. I know a lot can change. But what I watched

8:34on Sunday between those two teams, offense, defense, coaching, quarterback, those are two playoff teams. Yes. And, you know, we don't need to panic. There's only eight teams left with an undefeated record, only eight at a 32. Last year, we had 10 after two weeks. It's tougher and tougher. So when it comes down to eight left, we should not worry about the one in one teams at all. And I would say there's a couple of oh and two teams we don't have to worry about either. That looks dismal. Everyone's upset. Let's fire the coach. What's wrong with our team? Wasn't used to know in three last year. Yep. Everybody relax. So, and that's not what the coach is going to say to his players. That is not what he's going to say. But they are going to look at some of these things and get pretty excited. So we had four teams last week that were losing it. This is, people would think this is a high number. It's a little over average, honestly. Four teams losing at halftime won the game. Denver was

9:35one of them. Indie was losing at halftime. The Saints were losing at halftime. And so it's Cleveland. And most teams come out of the locker room nowadays and they do not recover from the halftime if they're down. And I track this every week. And usually we get like two, three, get four. Pretty good. Four guys were able to come back out and change their fortunes. So this idea that this halftime adjustments does not really. The adjustments are on the field every other series. You go into the locker room and you're asking a doctor who can still go. That's what that's usually about. By the way, Pat, you led me right to where I wanted to go. I actually did a little homework for you this week. Last year, Carolina, Chicago, and Houston, all oh and two all made the playoffs. And right now Tampa, Houston, Indianapolis, the chargers, all oh and two. There's some others I'm not going to worry about. On your panic meter at oh and

10:35two, Indie, the chargers, Houston, Tampa Bay. Who would you be most worried about? I'm worried about Tampa Bay right now. And I thought they had enough to be a division champ. I picked them to win the division. That still might happen. But there's just a something going wrong there right now. And I talk to Todd every week. And Todd is usually pretty level headed and kind of can work his way through bad starts and bad streaks and everything else. But I just, there's something missing. And I don't know if I can put my finger on it yet. Part of it's how Baker's playing. But I do worry about those guys. Houston, I don't know about them. Well, they really defense. Yeah. And they defense was better against Cincinnati. But obviously, the offense was not there at all. Bought snap on a fugal early didn't help things. You know, Indianapolis now Pierce is going to be out a little bit. I think that that affects that team.

11:39The chargers worry me Pat because I was I was leery of this Mike McDaniel Jim Harball relationship. It just seemed like square peg round hole to me. Herbert holds on to the ball a long time. Well, what is he coach with two? A guy that gets rid of the ball quickly. I'm not, you know, those two are forever linked because of where they were drafted. We all know that Herbert's the right choice. But how good he's going to be. We have no idea. They got the two tackles back. Their lines not blocking well. They don't have guys on the edge. You know, they don't have receivers to me that can get open. And they're really good running back fumbled against the Raiders. I mean, the chargers of the team. I'm probably most worried about out of the four I mentioned. Pat, I wonder your thoughts on where they're at right now. Yeah. Good points by you. And the marriage of the OC and the head coach be interested to see how long that last. The head coach is an offensive guy. Oh, he's ever keep that in mind. And he's got his own instincts about what to do. And you have all these Tuesday night meetings and the OC tells you what the plan

12:41is and you tell him you like the plan. And then it doesn't look like that on Sunday. That will reach a boiling point in about a week or two because 0 and 3 or anything else is going to start to really frustrate Jim Harbaugh for starters. And I don't know if that thing will last. And you know, I coach Sean Payton had to, he needed his OC to do a better job, which he did. Well, he did in the fourth quarter. Sean Payton might be calling plays this week, Pat. Right. And those are the two places where I thought the head coach, two offensive guys. Now remember, I said this on your show last week, but Sean Payton had his play calling duties taken away from him in New York. Jim Fossil, remember, put all the chips in. That was all about he took the disc. He disconnected Sean from the play calling. So Sean's been around that side of it. That might still happen, but they kind of got a one week reprieve. Kind of like the Sean Watson, you know, a one week reprieve. No doubt because when you win and went on the road, that can happen. They took down the box. He's Pat Kerwin. This is one I've been cracking up because I know, you know, you put it out there every day all year long. You hardly take a day off. You're doing six days a week now on the on the NFL radio network doing Saturdays as well. When you and Jacob has to do your pickups, but when you're down on a team and that team plays well, well, all of their fans like to attack. And I got the biggest kick out of this because a good friend of mine, a smart guy, a very successful man, but he's a fan. And so out of nowhere, I get a text Sunday night. Frontline is deep. Turner is a shutdown corner. Tell Pat

14:52Kerwin to quit hated and watch the film talking about his Cincinnati Bengals. Your thoughts on the Bengals defense through two weeks. They have obviously exceeded expectations, but yet we are only two weeks into the season. What do you think about Cincinnati's start? Well, you can tell my do watch the film. I know. I know. They're getting their monies worth out of the three guys more out of Maffa than I thought they'd get. That's right. He wasn't a starter on the world champions, but that's okay. I've watched Cincinnati for a long time. And there's been a time or two when Luana Rumo ran the defense. I thought they did a very good job creatively beating Kansas City in a championship game. I stood on the sideline and watched Lou do it. So I'm going to go slow on these guys. Now what's working to their benefit? Baltimore is a little shaky. Pittsburgh couldn't score. And Cleveland is Cleveland. So the division might be handing them a first-place

15:57pacemet place, not here and say, hey, it's all yours. Take it because none of us are doing it, but it's too early for that. So I'm happy for them. And I'm happy for that coach. The only coach kept in the division, but we're not going to get excited about the Bengals yet. I don't call them the bungles like a lot of guys, but I'm not going to start getting myself an orange helmet or an orange shirt and start wearing it. That's not happening. You know, you had talked last week. What's Drew Locke going to do in the starting job? You know, a lot of these guys can come in and fill in and look, and I don't think Arizona is a particularly good football team. They had a nice first week. They've got some nice skilled guys. And for about a quarter, a quarter and a half, they looked as if they were playing with Seattle. And then Seattle said, we're just kind of playing with our food right now. Let's get this over with. And Locke was terrific. JSN had what, like three, four touchdowns for crying out loud. And that defense, Pat, I know it was Arizona, but Arizona, like we said, has skilled guys, defense travels. And the Seahawks, the defending champs,

17:01that front four can still get after a quarterback. Yeah, defense travels. And we're Seattle traveling to Washington. And I think Drew Locke will look pretty good if he's still playing. They kind of think in San Donald might be close to coming back. We're going to get a couple of them back as we lost a couple more. But Seattle's never to be underestimated. This head coach, I talk to him every week, he is really impressive how he sees his football team and how he trains them. So I would think Locke has done his job. Locke will probably make some money later in his career based on what he's done here. He didn't leave. I thought he had an opportunity to make a few more bucks somewhere else, but he decided to stay good, call by him. Him and Wence looked to me like they're walking towards reinventing their careers. And I'd be happy for both of them. But Seattle's got a pretty easy ride here on this week coming up. So they're going to keep going. They're going to win.

18:03San Francisco looks like they can roll. And the Rams got right back in. How about Devon Tey last night? You know, that's the thing. Like when I look at the chargers and I, you know, I don't, I think Maconke's good. I think he's really good. I think he'd be a great two. I don't think he's a one. Like Devon Tey Adams used to be a one. You know, Pook is the one there. But Adams showed last night that if you need me. And again, you know, once, once lock was hurt, that game was based, or not mean, uh, dart was hurt, that game was over. But he can step up and be that guy. I mean, my goodness, the game he had last night, he in, in spot duty. If you know what I mean, Pat, he can still be a one. There's no doubt about it. He's a true one. And thank goodness, his career's going to last a lot longer as long as Pook is on the field. He couldn't play last night. So the substitute teacher rocked the way he used to. I think Randy Moss was like that. Rooney was never going to be anything but a one. And sometimes it got quiet later in his career.

19:07But when called upon on any given day, Mike Evans can do that. He can surprise you with one of those 10 catch that, you know, 18 yards of catch. He can have one of those days in a minute's notice. So I love watching Adams last night. Uh, aren't they lucky to have him because he wanted that challenge. He was excited to be the guy again. And it was fun to watch him deliver. It really was. It really was. Look at green Bay got lucky Sunday. But sometimes you got to get lucky in the league. I don't know if I give green Bay that win. I don't know if Aaron Glenn might have screwed that up a little bit. I don't know where you want to point the finger. But for the Packers, not only do they win, they get a home Thursday game against the Atlanta Falcons. And I don't know if Pentix can be the savior because it's going south quickly in Atlanta, Pat. It is. And Pentix hasn't played enough to even know if he ever was the savior. There was just hope that he could be. But he's never had enough games healthy to deliver. We'll see. And I always found it interesting last year when he

20:12went down with the injury. You know, who was the savior? Kirk Cousins. Kirk came on the field. He won his last four games there. Now he's won his first two in radar country. That's a six game winning streak with a lot of production. So I have no idea. Kind of says the guy. I think they're scared to death about finding out. And they're really hoping with their fingers. Cressy will be will will find out because now he's got an injury history himself. You imagine if he gets hurt again right away. Anytime this year, what are you going to say to me then? Can he can he count on him? I have no I have no idea. I and we won't know until to me until out of the next 15 games. Can he play in 13 of them? Show me you can play most of a season. A guy that's played a lot of football a lot of seasons hasn't looked good so far. They fortunately got Atlanta week one. And most anybody can beat Atlanta right now. Then they looked terrible against a really good New England defense. The Pittsburgh Steelers and McCarthy and and Rogers and Rogers said I need to tell him

21:18what plays work. You know, he doesn't like all this motion and all these different things going on which seems to be what everybody's doing. Can this offense produce at a rate to be good enough to what you and I expect out of the Steelers? I do think you have to let Rogers do it. Rodgers wants to do it. He doesn't like motion. You know, hated motion, Peyton Manning. Peyton Manning like to line up and look at you and he could figure out what you're going to do and he didn't want to change. People think when you put on motion that you're stressing the defense, but a lot of times you're stressing the offense. So I think if Rogers wants to play, you know, kind of still just stand there and look at it and let him do it. And he and Mike have a great relationship. He'll be able to talk at Mike into doing that. So when you score three points and he's frustrated with it, just pay attention to him. It's his last to Raw and he kind of knows enough football to give him a run of the house here and let him do it his way. 60 seconds. If Kyler Murray's healthy, what do you

22:18do this week with the Vikings? They're going to play him, you know, but we all know there's a Carson Wenz in the wings here and Carson Wenz may be a starter for someone in the next year or so. I think he's starting to come back. This this miracle worker head coach Kevin O'Kyle, he's he is really something when it gets to get comedy's guys down. Now there's a lot of pressure on Kyler. We just saw Carson Wenz play. If Kyler comes out, he looks like the guy from Arizona running around and not getting any in zone. You tell me what you're going to ask me in two weeks. I know what I'm going to ask you. I mean, look at why don't they play Wenz? It's the one backup that we will find out about there are a bunch of games that we will get to on Friday. There's a couple of oh, go ahead Pat. There are nine home dogs this week. You tell me the last time you saw nine home dogs. Some oh and two teams playing oh and two teams. There's some important games early in the season like

25:27Good morning, Bud. How are you? Let's go to Mark. Well, I am eager to talk about last week and and I don't know how much time I can do because there's so much to jump to for this coming week. But let's start obviously the huge game. Ole Miss and LSU. Just what surprised you the most. I will tell you for me it was the calmness in which. Chambliss place football. He even when he's running. I mean, when he's making he just looks so damn in control. Bud throughout that game. Maybe I'd one little hiccup there in the third quarter where they weren't playing that well. But this young man is I know he's a six year guy. He's a special quarterback. He really is like look LSU's defense. I do think is like awesome, especially that back end. And he just made big time throw after big time throwing. We said on the cover three recap show on Saturday night late, like look dude. He just fired at pens and stuck it. Right? Like a lot of those were risky. He embraced the risk. He

26:31said like that's where the ball has got to go. That window is tight and stuck it in there. And like that's they really kind of won the game because of two special players. Right? On offense, it was Chambliss just playing like the best quarterback in the country. And then on defense, it was Will Eccles. He had like 16 impact plays which for a defensive tackle is just insane. Like he, Sam Levit looked jittery in the pocket a little bit. And for good reason, Will Eccles, I think he was like the second or third highest graded player in the entire sport on defense. And like to do that against a playoff contender team, it's just kind of insane. Like he dominated the interior so much. It messed up LSU's game plan. And you know, I think LSU's still a really good team. And like that game came down to the wire, obviously, but old misgets had done. And I think it was a phenomenal weekend for Ole Miss for so many reasons. I mean, obviously like to get that cathartic revenge win over the coach that left you and then kind of trashed you. But then also mark Louisville beats SMU and beats him by two scores. And like now, I think if you're old mis, you're like,

27:37hey, we can get in at nine and three. We got two wins in pocket that are going to look really good. Now we're at three, three and a half, four point, whatever. It kind of ran out the four yesterday for a little bit. How? How? So I think that people think Auburn is really good. You know, and I had they watched the Baylor game. Baylor moved up and down the field and DJ lagway did DJ lagway things. And I like this Florida team. I told you guys all summer, I think they've got real pieces. And like I made Florida my cover three three star lock. Right? As my best bet of the entire weekend, I thought that game should have been four and a half five. You know, and instead we're we're laying two two and a half. But at the same time, like man, Ole Miss is not Auburn. Right? I think old. Right. In Auburn score 32 before that garbage touchdown at the end. I mean, you know, if we want to discount the last one fine, they still were in the 30s, a team that could barely, you know, couldn't get to 20 against Baylor. Yeah, 100% and look,

28:39hey, I don't think Florida played their a game. Right? Okay. Me Florida had some mistakes, obviously. Also, and I'm not a big like Harp on the official guy. I thought Florida got kind of a job by that crew, to be honest, not just with the number of penalty disparity, like they called Florida for 16 penalties. So summer well earned. But if you're going to be flag happy, be flag happy for both sides. And I thought Florida's D line kind of ate in that game. And there were just a lot of big time uncalled holdings that allowed Auburn, you know, to score some of those points. I also like, how do you price in the betting market that the emotional come down? No, maybe not let down, but there's going to be an emotional come down for that Ole Miss team. Whereas Florida, like sure, it's great to go on the road, get your first SC win. I don't know if that team is like, all right, cool, hey, we did it. We've arrived. I'm sure summer all is all up their butts this week. You guys think you played that well? Look, I don't know, man, but Baylor held that team to 17 points. You guys give up 30 something. Yeah, I'm not high on Brown as a quarterback. I mean, I like the Moxie, but I don't like how he throws the football. So, but I'm, but I think the point

29:45that you make, look at there's no doubt the crowd had a huge part of how LSU played in the first half. I don't think there's any denying the impact that the crowd and Oxford made on LSU's offense. Yeah. If you, if you believe what I say to be true, and I don't just mean you, bud, I mean, everybody will then what do you think the crowd's going to be like 330 at the swamp? Oh, it's going to be insane for sure. I don't know that I'm picking old Miss in that game. I I thought when it ran out to four yesterday, that was worth a little nibble on the ribs. Like four feels pretty big. But then again, like, I'm very down on Auburn. I had Auburn missing a bowl. I had him going five and seven, you know, like that. I think their win total was like six and a half juice over. So it's a pretty big disagreement, you know, on something there. So I, I got Florida kind of just did what I expected them to do in set like as far as the margin. But like the way they got there was a little unexpected. Man, Fylo operates that offense so well. Like, and like the receivers are insane. And obviously you have Baw and the offensive line was

30:49good enough. You know, and like just I think having a quarterback that, by the way, there was no way that was a real competition for quarterback. No, see how well Fylo operates. And I'm not trying to to integrate Jones. I think that's a hey, man, we appreciate you not transferring out despite the fact we brought in the transfer over you. We're going to make this a competition and competing is good. Blubble, blah. There's no chance that that was a real competition or they're ever going to pick Jones after seeing how smoothly and like just the understanding that Fylo has of operating out offense. Also, he's kind of tough. Like a young in there. It took some shots. Yeah, he did. My last thing I don't know the past that chambler's made at the end of the first half when he threw with both feet were off the ground and he threw it dark. He threw a laser into the end. That past, like I kept saying is he a Diego Pavia, you know, like a great Saturday, not good on Sunday. Wow, some of those throws are those are Sunday throws, bud. I mean, I look, would you not spend the first round pick on this guy and take like at least league average starting quarterback capability for like a full contract on a rookie scale?

You know, now granted, Bama's defense clamped them like the whole time like a Kentucky had like 170 total yards in the game. Like they never got the 200, I believe. You know, I think with Florida state, they had the by week. They they came out and they they ran some different stuff than they had been running. And I think it took Alabama's time to adjust. And also on top of some of that different stuff they have been running, like some of Florida state studs made plays. Like, Duce Robinson just balled out. You know, Dijon leaves a good corner for Bama. Like he's going to get drafted too. And sometimes your six foot six 230 pound guy just wins, right? And like he won. He beat him off press a couple times. And, you know, like that, I think you kind of got a tip of your cap. On the other side,

36:08Keelon is so talented, but he is young. And Tony White runs a real funky defensive issue. And I think it took a little bit of time for him to solve that. But you all it's also kind of high risk high reward when you don't have some of those good pass rushers. So you have to do a lot of manufactured pressures. And you you saw the 52 yard run, you know, from Keelon. That that kind of funky blitz. They got him with it early early in the first quarter. And it confused him. In a second half, that's that slow developing loop blitz. Keelon just paused for half sings that oh, shoot. The middle is wide open. Let me take off and go 52. McAroy gave a good breakdown of this.
