This is Crime House. We go over to my car and he bends down and points under at a black box. He asks me if I know what it is and tells me it's a GPS. It took me a second to understand the implications of a GPS being under my car. So I was like, wait, so someone put it there?

Welcome back to Crime's of Reddit. I'm Sabrina Deanna Roga. And I'm Alexis Linclater. And we're back with some more horrifying true crime stories from Reddit. I can't wait. I've been thinking about it all morning. Oh, I've been thinking about this episode for so long. I mean, all of the stories are wild, but there's one that I cannot wait to get your reaction. I mean, yesterday when we were talking about it, you were like, I'm keeming with excitement to tell me about this. Which is might say something about me that's a little sickening. I don't know. No, I can't wait. I can't wait. No, I am sick in the head. And that's okay. I think everyone here might be. We're all in this together. But okay. Today, I am covering three of the most unsettling roommate stories from Reddit. And I haven't heard any of them yet.
And I'll be reacting in real time just like you. And I don't know. I feel like I'm excited for this episode because I've been fortunate where I don't have really bad roommate stories. But I'm curious to hear if you have any bad roommate stories as we're going through the episode. Yes. Because you've lived a lot of life and there's a lot of lore that I still need to unpack of yours. A lot of lore. I've definitely had some interesting roommates and some bad stories, but I'm interested to see how they measure up to what we're talking about today. Well, we'll get into it. And then also after listening to this episode, if any of you who are listening, you thread heads, if that's what we're calling you, have bad roommate stories or any stories of your own relative to any cases we've covered on the podcast. Please share them with us on our subreddit, which is at Crimes of Pod. This is titled, I went for a tire change, found a tracker under my car, placed by my roommate. How do I go about this?
All right. I, 25, female, moved to a new town last year and I only knew one person. I stayed with her for a bit until I found a house to rent, but I needed a roommate. So this friend I knew introduced me to a guy, 35 male. She had worked with him and he also needed a roommate because he had just gotten a divorce. I met him first and I didn't get any weird vibes. He seemed nice enough. About six months ago, he made the suggestion that we become friends with benefits. And I made this stupid mistake of agreeing. We both did not want a relationship. That's what they thought. Everything was fine until he started getting weird and staying up until I got home, questioning me about where I had been, who I was around. I then ended the hooking up. I told him I didn't think it was like that and he got mad. But everything was fine. For a bit. Until yesterday. I live in a pretty rural area where most businesses are small and family owned. I decided to go ahead and get some new tires and support a mechanic shop that I go to
since I doubt they're getting any regular business at the moment. So I'm there. I'm waiting when the guy comes over and tells me that he wants to show me something. I'm like, okay, we go over to my car and he bends down and points under at a black box. He asks me if I know what it is and tells me it's a GPS. It took me a second to understand the implications of a GPS being under my car. So I was like, wait, so someone put it there? It's clear. I have no idea why it's there. And so then the mechanics starts getting actually concerned and told me if I didn't know I needed to find out. I felt so creeped out because again, I have no friends here and that one friend I did know moved away. I only know a couple of people at work, but they're not really friends and it's been hard to meet people. There is no other way a GPS would be on my car unless my roommate put it there. Now I'm freaked out in a way I've never been before and I can't move out. I'm scared to ask him about it. I have no one to stay with and I have no family here.
What do I do? Do I ask him about it outright? I left the GPS under the car because I don't want him to know that I know at the moment. But what do you think I should do? What she's doing? Yeah. I just don't think confronting someone. I don't think that's productive in this situation because then you're creating a worse situation at home because they're going to be defensive and embarrassed or angry or angry. Because you don't know this person and they got angry. They were questioning you already about where you were, what you were doing, who you were with. And it seemed like they kind of had not warranted anger. Yeah, I would leave it on there and then look for an exit strategy. Yes. And I know she said, I don't have one. I can't. I don't know anyone. You can't. You can't find one when you're in danger. Yeah. So that's what a lot of the comments say. One of them said that's really creepy. Start planning your exit and document everything. I would also be concerned there are cameras in your bedroom and bathroom. I honestly would not feel safe to return home immediately.
They call the police and file a report. There are devices you get from a spy store that can scan for the frequency of hidden cameras, but honestly, I wouldn't even waste my time with that. My peace of mind would be worth a terminated lease and a breach in contract, which a police report would help you in a civil court should you have to go. Run. Do not walk to the nearest exit. And maybe I mean, I don't really, you know, the bar is low with cops. But if you went to the police department, because like filing a report also sounds like a bad idea. Like if the cops come in your house, like then he'll know you know, I'll go to the police department and be like, what do I do? Like this is my situation. Right. And maybe you'll get a good cop. Maybe not, but you could try. Yeah. I had a friend recently who was at a dog park and she had like put her bag on the bench behind her and there were maybe like two other people there. And when she got home later at night, she got that like alert on her phone that said that there was an Apple device with her and has been with her since someone had put an air tag in her bag.
That's crazy. It's so creepy. That's crazy. And I get those alerts too. Like if I'm with someone for a long period of time and they have like, you know, a set of air pods with them, I'll get that same alert. And I'm like, that's incredible that they implemented that. I'm glad that exists. But it's scary. It was happening so much that they needed to. Because people are horrible. Yes. Yeah. Okay. So we got an update. Okay. There's more. So last night I decided to subtly pack my things and I plan on making the drive at some point today back to my hometown. My roommate works during the day, but I work from home because my office is closed until at least this summer. I realized I could probably fit all of my stuff in my car and since my lease ends in May anyway, I'm just going to move out. The only furniture that's mine and not the landlords or his is my bed and it's old. So I think I'm just going to leave it here. I went down to the police station early this morning and had them remove the device from my car. I don't think there's much they can do besides document it. They asked me some questions and I said I didn't know, but I know no one here and thought
it might be my roommate. They said it looked like a cheap tracker from Amazon or eBay and they'll check it out. Honestly, I may just end up staying home. I miss being in a familiar place where I know basically everyone in town and I miss my friends working from home for a few months might give me enough time to switch jobs. So that's all I have for now. Then we get another update. I already mentioned I went to the police and drove home and I'm all settled in now. I did end up asking my roommate about it via phone, which I would have done too. Yeah, that's the same way. Once you're safe and out of there. He admitted to it, got freaked out when I said I gave it to the police and said he was just concerned for my safety when I would go to places by myself after work. Yeah. We got into a scuffle about it and he finally snapped and said that he knew I was seeing someone while I was hooking up with him, but I wasn't. So yeah, my first experience with crazy and hopefully my last, but even if she was, they discussed that it was no strings. Yeah.
And that they didn't want a relationship. So like that's weird, possessive behavior. I know. Have you ever lived with a male roommate that you ended up getting into relationship with? No. Yeah. Me neither. I didn't live with any men. I live with one man. He was a delightful roommate, but no interest. We let me and all my friends lived in a big house in Hollywood. We let our male friend who was on that show, that Janice Dickinson modeling show. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. It was like, I don't remember what it was to become a model. So he was in town for that and we let him live on our couch for a few months. That's right. But he was like our friend. Yeah. But no. No man. You're a roommate. Try to track you? No. Me neither. I always think of the movie with, I want to call her Blair, but I know that's not her real name. From Gossip Girl, it's called The Roommate. Like Lively? No. Oh, Leet and Meester. Leet and Meester. Yeah. It's so good. I love her. I love her.
But that movie, it's very unhinged in the best way. Yes. Because it's not real. Okay. Are you ready for the second story? Yes. This is the one that I've been waiting to get your take on. Okay. And also, I do have the shout out Morgan Absher, who actually introduced me to this story and she read it on an episode of Two Girls, my ghost episode 383 if anyone wants to listen to it over there too. But it's maybe one of the wildest stories I've ever heard. Oh, I can't wait. Hi, I'm Jim Clementi, retired FBI profiler, former Neocity prosecutor and writer producer of Criminal Minds. Let that sink in for a second. Oh, I'm so excited. Okay. I 24 mail. I hate that I'm excited about this, but okay. It's okay. We need to get our kicks somewhere. Yeah. I have 24 mail, have lived with my roommate Carl, also 24 mail for two years. A few months into rooming with him, he told me that he was pansexual. I said, okay, cool. I don't need that personal information nor my judgmental, but all right. A few times over the last year, he has asked me if I have considered experimenting with other men. I said, nope. I also said I didn't feel comfortable with him asking me such personal questions. It's not like we're close friends. We're only roommates by happenstance basically. Anyway, every time I told him this, he basically said, we'll see.
I was like, what? Anyway, last night, I had a horrifying experience. I heard a noise under my bed, a movement. And at first, I thought I was imagining things, but then I heard it again. I thought, oh God, is there a mouse or a rat or something under my bed? This is like 3 a.m. So I got out of bed and looked under it with my phone flashlight. Now this year was the most startling moment of my life. I guess I'm lucky because I've never before this experience felt true terror and fear as a physical sensation, but I was completely jolted. There, under my bed was my roommate, staring at me wide eyed. He screeched when I looked under the bed. I literally thought I was having a heart attack. I then just started hearing, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry. And my roommate crawled out from under the bed, crying, apologizing over and over. I was so creeped out and afraid that I ran out of the apartment in my pajamas. There was a Dunkin' Donuts that was open 24-7, a few blocks away.
So I just sat there with a decaf and a breakfast sandwich with my heart thundering away. My roommate kept texting me asking to talk. I ignored it. And in the text, he found a way to horrify me even further. He confessed that he had been sleeping under my bed a few nights a week for three or four months, and that he was doing it to get closer to me and to physically saturate each other. The fuck? I waited for him to go to work. I ran into the apartment. I got my essentials and I left. I'm currently crashing with a buddy or leases up in one month. My intention is simply not to renew this lease. This dude is blowing up my phone. I'm getting texts from other people, some friends of mine and some bozos who are friends with him. And he's going around telling people that I shamed him and that I'm rejecting his apologies. Some people are claiming I'm overreacting and invalidating his feelings. Most people agree he was improper, but think I should work it out with him and give him
a second chance because he's sensitive. I feel like I'm losing my mind. I'm seriously 20% convinced I'm experiencing a long-loosed dream of some sort and wondering if I'm ever going to wake up or if I'm in a coma or something because of this shit, because this shit is so insane to me. Like not really, but maybe really, I mean, what the fuck? So am I the asshole or is everyone around me a fucking nut? The friends being on the underbed sleeper side is unreal. Daringed. This whole situation. The fact that the guy under the bed carol, yeah, is that what we're calling him? Shrieked. Yeah. You're scared. Carol? And also, like, I want to understand the logistics. Like, how did Carl get under there? Did he? He's crawling in there. I know, but before a original poster gets home or is it as he's sleeping? No. That'd be really hard to not wake someone up. And also, does he not want to, like, Carl? Does he not want to, like, scroll in bed?
Like, he's just under there. He wants to. He's still physically saturate with him. That's so gross. Like, what does that mean? That's like someone who steals people's skin. No, it's someone who, like, thinks that energy is like you can get it through osmosis or something. That, like, the closeness creates this, like, synergistic thing, which I'm not saying I agree with. Right, right. No, no saturating of any kind should be tolerated without consent. And also, there's so much wrong with this story. But the fact that he admitted that it wasn't just a one-time thing that he admitted it had been going on for three or four months, no. It reminds me a little bit of the slug story where it's like someone trying to, like, continue to push the limits. And, like, maybe it started with, let me, like, watch him sleep. And then the OP didn't wake up. So then he starts to, like, move in, do more. I'm just like, slide under the bed for a little bit. What if he, like, took pictures of a shirt?
Is he sleeping? I mean, there's no boundaries here. And, like, what's so weird about this is, like, I don't believe in, like, saturating being close. But Karl does. In saturating with energy, without consent, there's something wrong with this. Well, there's so much with the consent here because Karl, multiple times, hit on OP. And OP was like, I'm not interested. And then, roommate was like, we'll see. It's like, no, no. OP has made boundaries very, very clear. Karl thought that he could bypass this by energy saturating behind his back. It's horrifying. Like, could you imagine waking up and even if you know the person, it's probably worse that you know the person is under your bed. It's Rina. I'm literally thinking about what I shared with you. I'm like, what is it? What is it episode one about how literally I would when I was a little girl, I would sleep walk and end up under my parents' bed and scream, not knowing where I was when I woke up? I mean, it happens. I mean, anything though, that was sleepwalking. And I was a child.
Yeah. And it was my parents. There's a lot different. But like, as soon as you said, the subject of the post, I was like, oh, there are some parallels here. Yeah. You didn't have control. No, we're consciously choosing to do it. That's right. And I woke up afraid. Yeah. It's different. Also horrifying. Yes. For different reasons. Okay. Just to read one comment that I feel like agrees with everything we're saying. They said, yes, you did shame him. Yes, you rejected his apologies. Why? Because he crossed so many boundaries of common decency, privacy and basic human respect. This is the behavior a predator or a stalker would do. Whatever trust you had with Carl has been broken and shattered into a thousand pieces, not the asshole. Also, like, shaming is bad. You know, we don't want to. No, in this situation, bring back shame. Yes, this is real. Yeah. Some people should be shame. I'm going to shame energy saturation without consent.
Yeah. And like, that is horrible. Yeah. Like, I'm picturing the scene in Game of Thrones when Sarah C is being like walked through the street with the bell and everyone saying shame. Like, maybe we need a little bit more public shame. Bring it back. Bring it back. Okay. So, OP does address some of the comments. Okay. Look, I knew some people wouldn't believe me. I get it. Crazy. I can hardly believe it myself. So I understand your skepticism. But the reasons you posted make no sense to me. How did he get under the bed? He crawled under. It's not difficult. As to when, I guess he snuck in when I did my toothbrushing before bed. Yeah. And then a lot of people, this, I don't know. This is just funny. A lot of people were like, how'd you end up at Dunkin' Donuts eating breakfast at night? And the OP is like, I don't know. This point really confuses me. Why are you also concerned? I walked there. It was open. I ordered. I mean, what? I thought about it. Did he grab his wallet on the way out? Apple pay. Okay. Yeah. Anyway, Dunkin' makes things when you order them. Time of day isn't relevant. Anyway, that was something that people really questioned. No one should be victim blaming him.
I'll say that. No, and there's a lot of other things that we should be concerned about in this original post. Like Carl. Yeah. Yeah. I'm curious, everyone listening, what would you do if your roommate, if you found your roommate under your bed? Kind of steal your energy. Like a witch. What if OP was always exhausted? Yeah, probably. Because energy vampires are a thing. Yes. And Carl's here trying to absorb energy. Carl's a succubus. Yeah. Sorry, Carl. Isn't that sorry? Banana? Yes. I'm so glad if the OP didn't get hurt. I do agree. You know? Yeah. Okay. Onto our last story. And this is also equally fucked up. Did you know the most feared pirate in the Atlantic? The man who terrorized an entire ocean for years may never have actually killed anyone, or that the real golden age of pirates was the most democratic workplace in the Western
world. I'm Connor Tomlinson from Love on the Spectrum, and history is my thing. And I'm Carter Roy, and this is what the fact. Every week we take the most unbelievable true things in history and tell you the whole story behind them. Carter sets the scene. It's the fact that it's the most interesting subject in the world. It is. This is the history lesson. You actually wish you had in high school. New episodes every Wednesday follow what the fact on Apple podcasts, Spotify, Amazon music, or subscribe on YouTube at what the fact pod. One summer evening when she was 20 years old, something terrible happened to Vienna Luke. I can't figure it out, but I do know that it was a violation. Then people started asking questions. What a creep. Who else knows about this? From CBCs personally, this is Agent Leila. The story of how a victim went undercover.
So bring it on. Let's go. Let's get a confession. Available now on CBC Listen, or wherever you get your podcasts. Am I the asshole? I think my landlord drugged me. And I feel like there should be a rewrite and subject for this where it's like my landlord fully did drug me and I have evidence because there's a full text exchange photos that we have that prove everything. My God. Okay. I just made this account to post here. I'm sitting at a 24 hour diner unsure if I should go home, call the cops, or if I'm literally just overreacting here. I escaped an abusive relationship two months ago and I left with basically nothing except a little bit of savings, no job, nada. I luckily, at the time, found this place online. I've been a loner since my relationship because he basically destroyed myself a steam, my body, my mind. I no longer have any friends and the few I did have never replied to my texts anymore, so I'm literally starting from zero again.
The point is I found this spot online. I met the landlord who also lives in the house and we clicked. He let me rent it for cheap while I found a job which I still haven't secured yet, hence my hesitance to leave. This is freaking me out. So my landlord has been subtly hinting that he likes me, always knocking on my door or letting himself in and jumping into bed with me complaining about his day. And this guy is like 60 years old. I just assumed he's lonely and bored and again, I was super appreciative to be able to live here for so cheap. And here are the texts. I'll read them. So the landlord's jumping into bed to talk about his bad day, like jumping into bed with you is insane. Like some friends won't even do things like that. That is so gross. And also, if you're wearing your outside clothes, don't touch my bedding. That's what Jam is only place. I'm okay. That's good to know about you.
You don't want your jeans that have been like touching there. You don't want your jeans? I don't care about my own stuff, I guess. Do you love my dog in bed? Do you eat food in bed? Yeah. Okay. Soup. Yeah. Only soup. That's like my favorite thing. Soup's like my favorite thing to eat in bed. Oh, I wouldn't do soup in bed. I don't know whenever it's around. I love this for you. I will not bring my street clothes into your bed, but I will bring soup into your bed. Or risotto or something fine. Okay. Fantastic. Good to know. Also, if I were in the situation, I would have put a lock on my door. Because even if you get along with your landlord, sharing a house with someone significantly older, I would just just with my own safety. Hard pass. Yeah. And a man at that. Yeah. Okay. We have pictures of, so we'll put them in the YouTube as I read along.
The landlord says, do you want some tea? I can bring it to your room, smiley face. Maybe movie question mark. I want to watch something horror. Ha, ha, ha. If you get scared, I'm here too. Ha, ha, ha, ha. Then she responds early morning tomorrow. Thanks, though. Landlord. Okay. Tea question mark. Will. There's a lot of typos too. Will hell you sleep. It's a special blend. I'll leave outside your door. Then the next screenshot is this just black dark image. And the landlord has a text with it that says, you are a pretty sleeper. Ha, ha, ha. Yum yum tea. Ew. Ew. No. No. Okay. Even if I was a 60 year old woman who was attracted to him, I would have the egg. Like that is so gross. The text. Yeah. It's horrifying. No. No. Yeah, six year old man. Landlord's man.
Yeah. So if I was age appropriate and went on like no, the soic. Awful. Then OP, responding, you took a pick of me while I was sleeping. Byron, I love living here. I truly appreciate the kindness you show me by letting me rent from you. But you cannot enter my room while I'm sleeping. Landlord says, I just want to protect you. The tea is strong. I was worried. I wanted to make sure. I think you are beautiful. I am handsome. We have connection. I would hate to see you leave. I don't want it to go that way. Last night was beautiful. Thank you. What happened? The fuck you mean last night was beautiful? That's what the OP said. Yeah, because like what was beautiful about it? The creeping into a room. And what do you mean the tea was strong? What the hell did you put in the tea? And what happened? What was so beautiful about your night? Isn't that horrifying? Yes, it's disgusting. So OP continued saying this all went down yesterday. I drank the tea because honestly he'd made me tea like 30 times before and I never thought anything of it.
But I guess I'm an idiot. I literally slept for like 13 hours and woke up to these texts. I politely excused myself from the house and I've been walking around the town hanging out at this diner for the entire day, trying to mentally figure out how to proceed. I feel sick. Physically. I have omitted three times today already. I didn't feel sick before bed. My legs hurt, my chest hurts. I bruising on my arms that I didn't notice until today. And overreacting for thinking he did something, it feels like everything is pointing to yes. I'm afraid to report it since the cops barely helped last time, I think with their acts. And basically judge me for coming to them too late after years of issues with a partner. I'm scared and confused. It's so sad. Yeah, I just went from like creepy guy to like horrible situation and now she's afraid of the cops, which is like devastating. And feeling like you've maybe been violated and have nowhere to turn is just horrible. And I feel like this is just such a common thread where it's someone in such a vulnerable
position. They've just left an abusive relationship and are in a really trying time in their life, trying to rebuild. And here's someone in a power position who completely takes advantage of it. Yeah. So a lot of people in the comments were saying go to the hospital, tell them everything that you're still very disoriented and having trouble remembering. Sounds like a roofie plus maybe some other tranquilizers. The hospital should handle everything. Literally, they will get all the tests you need and make sure cops actually handle it. A decent cop will offer to get things for you while you're in the hospital because they absolutely will be arresting this guy. You are so lucky he didn't kill you. And now that you've left for a bit, I wouldn't be surprised if you make sure you can't leave again. I agree. Like never go back to that house. I agree. But that commenter, it's pretty idealistic. Yeah. Sure. You know, like they're probably like a guy who's like, this will happen for you for sure. And it's like, no, that's not, it's not that easy for women. It's also really violating to go to a hospital and do those tests.
Yeah. And if you're someone who's also been in an abusive relationship, I imagine like you don't want to be like, poked and prodded. No, in that commenter's assuming that like everybody does their job the way they're supposed to. Yeah. And like you're really assuming a lot of things are going to happen, which is nice, but not necessarily the OP's reality. But also medically, if she was poison, which something was slipped in that T for sure, she should know what is in her system and like make sure that it's not impacting her another and any other ways. Yeah. We have no updates on that case. Oh no. How it ends. I hate that. I know. And it's such like a, it's such a crazy reminder. Like it's horrible that women have to be vigilant in these ways, but it's like when you're entering a roommate situation or even a hotel or an Airbnb, it's like, you are vulnerable to the person who has access to that space. And we shouldn't have to be so vigilant, but we really do have to be.
I stayed in a hospital in Milan when I was like backpacking. This is 2016, but I was young. I was by myself and I didn't have any accommodations planned, but I was like, oh, I'll go find a hostel. I found this hostel and I went to go check in and the guy checking me in was like, oh, unfortunately, we don't have any rooms available. But then this other man comes over and goes, let me take a look. Starts like typing, got it out here. So, oh, it's super full. Like, yeah, we're booked out, but you know what? There is one bed left. Shows me to the room. It's like a room with six bunk beds. No one else is in there. Completely empty. Oh, no. Just me. And I immediately got like weird creepy vibes from it. So then I ended up making friends with other people staying in the hostel. And that night, I just felt so uncomfortable because it was a key card situation where you like swipe a key, but still by the time it was late at night, not another single person was in that room. And I just felt sketchy. Yeah. So then I made some of the people I had met come stay in the room with me.
Smart. It was horrifying. You just said it was all full. So why do I have this to myself? And then why all of a sudden did you find one bed? No. Yeah. You followed your spidey senses. That was a move. I did. Okay, but now I'm curious, what's your worst roommate situation? I just had really, it's nothing really bad. I had one roommate who was like an insane person and had no boundaries and I'd like come home and her friends would be like wearing my clothes. And she had just like a personality disorder where she was like, or would erupt in anger. And I just had to make up a lie to move out. And I gave her enough notice and luckily she didn't like, overreact, but it's funny. There are like these huge Facebook groups, groups in LA. And one girl, she posted like a roommate, like I'm looking for a roommate in this group that I was in. And the girl who was interested, I sent her a message and I was like, don't do it. Oh, it was your old roommate. Yes, it was my old roommate who posted like, I have a room available because she rented
this big house and I messaged the girl who was saying she was interested. I was like, don't do it. Please don't tell her I'm saying this, but don't do it. And she ended up not doing it. Wow. A lot of drama ensued. That's good for you though, looking out. Yeah, it's like she, she's very good on paper, but she's, she's unwell, you know, so it's just, but that's probably the worst. Do you ever think you were the crazy roommate? No. I was never, absolutely not. Yeah, never. I don't think I was. You definitely know. You weren't. You would know. I am pretty self-aware. Yeah, I like that about myself. I don't think I've had any crazy roommate situations. I've had disrespectful roommates. Yeah. Who would like hook up with their boyfriend. Like when I first moved to LA, I shared a room with someone. Mm-hmm. It's like 18. Yeah. And I had a roommate who would like have sex with their boyfriend in the room and I was like considerate. Well, that's, that's disgusting. That's horrible. Yeah. Now, if that, no. Yeah, but it was like gross. Well, now we're curious if anyone listening, if you have some wild roommate stories, because
you and I are pretty tame with roommate stories, I'm sure they're way crazier stories out there. So please share them with us. You can put them on our subreddit, which is crimes of pod. And then if you have any other stories that you want us to share in future episodes, leave them in the comments. And maybe we'll feature them in an upcoming episode. We want it. We want them.
