Welcome to the NFL Weekly preview show on Inside the Birds. I'm Jeff Mosher. It is week 4 in the NFL. It's crazy by the end of this week after the Monday night game. We are going to be just about 1 quarter through the NFL season. And it feels like it just got started. That's how it is. The first half always flies by tons of injuries. Tons of injuries that are impacting all these games. But I tell you what, something else is also impacting a lot of games that I just want to talk about quickly before I get into the games. All right. I've had the privilege and opportunity throughout my 20 plus years of covering the Eagles and
the NFL, going to combines, owners meetings, getting to know personnel people, coaches. I've gotten to know so many people involved with the league who see the game in so many different ways. And a lot of times, you know, I'm always talking about the scheme or strategy or personnel. But analytics and game management, things like that have become a bigger part of the discussions that I try to have when I talk to people. And the more I watch NFL football, the more I am surprised by coaches who I think are good coaches, good scheme, good exes and those people, even if they have bad records, sometimes that doesn't show you who a coach really is. But what surprises me a lot of times is how bad some coaches are with clock management, high management decision making when games get tight and you need to make a decision that might, you might be saying is based on analytics, but it's just good football and smart football
versus bad football. It's, I know that you're going to say, Jeff, you covered the Andy Reed era. What do you mean you're surprised by bad clock management? Yes. Andy Reed's a brilliant coach who for a long, long time earlier in his career was held back by bad time management. And it's true. I thought it would just get better though. Overall decision making time management, clock management, as we enter an era of so much analytics and so much resources available to you. But we continue to see games won and lost on this show last week. I had talked about Aaron Glenn and his decision making at the end of that game against the Packers where he doesn't call timeouts to give his offensive chance to have the ball. Lines of going over time, then he makes the unpopular decision to take the ball when most coaches always want to give the ball and then know what they have to do. When you know what you have to do, it can influence your play calling better than when
you get the ball first. And you know that your opponent's got a chance to score. So you're probably less risky. You don't want to take chances. You might make you naturally conservative. You're just trying to at least get a feel goal. Whereas you might know if you have a good offense, especially if all I got to do is match a feel goal or a score touchdown, you have the advantage of being a little more aggressive. But that was that, right? And then we had also talked about week two when the Eagles Titans and you saw Robert Sala, who obviously left too much time on the clock for the Eagles there by kicking the ball off into the end zone instead of short and trying to force a return that would have taken time off the clock. And then you saw a couple of games last weekend with similar bad decisions. I don't need to go into all of them. I mean, most people either saw or aware of the cowboys who left way too much time on the clock, both on their final play by throwing the ball out of the end zone and running a play where you could have that happen, leaving time on the clock and then leaving time on
the clock to then and then going and kicking the ball into the end zone, which left seven seconds on the clock for the Ravens to run a play. They got a big play. They kicked a feel goal. Shot and Heimer at least admitted that that was a mistake on his part. But it just continues. There was another game that also had too much time left on the clock or a coach made a bad decision trying to see if my memory can go. Oh, the Eagles game. Of course. It didn't hurt them, but obviously you saw Nick Seriani not go for it on a fourth and one and one long. You call it, I think the Eagles what I made it. I think that even if they didn't, you had to go for it there. The way the game was slipping away, you needed to give your offense from confidence. This is what you do. Fourth and short for sure. That was a missed opportunity. And that's just not my criticism. Nick Seriani admitted in retrospect he should have done it too. And even though they got away with it, the play before the half, right before Jill
and her sneaks it in at the last, at the skin of his teeth, they throw a scream with time running down. Then Devante Smith gets tackled right at the one and they didn't have any time outside. It's kind of a baffling play call at that moment. You could have run a play, a play, any play that if an incomplete pass or if you throw it out of the end zone, you want to give yourself a chance to score or kick a feel girl, right? If you can't score. So you throw the ball on the end zone. If it's incomplete, okay, the clock stops, you get two more chances. But they took away all their chances by throwing a scream and then they had to hurry up to the line and yes, they snuck in for the touchdown. If your point is who cares, they scored, then you don't understand the difference between smart, good results off a bad overall philosophy versus a good philosophy that just sometimes leads to a bad result. Every coach you will ever talk to will tell you its process over a result. Sometimes you can't control results. You call a great play, a guy fumbles, nothing you could do.
It happened, right? You want to have the right process and that was not a good process for the Eagles. So it made me think about the 2017 Eagles championship team. And if you look at that team, it wasn't just a special team because it was the first Super Bowl team. Yes, made it special. And of course, winning it with a backup quarterback and Nick Folls playing out of his mind just added icing to the cake of a special moment in franchise history. But what I think, what always stood out about that team to me was that it was not a superstar lead in team in terms of like the playmaking talent on offense compared to say the 2012 that lost or the 2014 that won with Seikwon and H and Devonté and AJ Brown and Jalen Hertz. I mean, the 2017 team was a balanced team, great offensive line, but a balanced team that controlled the clock had a lot of really good players. Obviously, Zach Hertz is a great player, but none, not like all Hall of Fame level kind
of players. And what stands out is they were so good because they were so aggressive and Doug Peterson went for them for a down. Why? Because he had a really important person in his ear named Ryan Paganetti who was in charge of those kind of game time decisions that they coordinate the week leading up to and Ryan did all the analytics and he studied all the trends and he knew exactly what the league would say you should do or what the stats would say you should do. It doesn't mean Doug had to say yes, we should do it too. But Doug generally said, generally listen to Ryan. Ryan said, hey, the stats say we should go for it here, go for it here. That led to the Philly special. That was a play that was a fourth downplay and Doug decided to go for it against the great Patriots dynasty and it changed the game and there's no doubt about it that they don't get that if they don't win the Super Bowl, they don't get that and remember the big fourth down conversion by Hertz later in the game as well.
That team was galvanized by going for it and being aggressive and having Ryan Paganetti helping Doug Peterson out. I really think a lot of these new coaches need that. I think every coach now has these data guys or analytics guys but they don't have them in their ear as much as Doug had Ryan in his ear and they need it. These guys have a lot going on. They're good coaches. Shownheimers are good coach. You can say what you want about them. It's been everywhere or maybe you don't think he's that good. I think he's a good coach. I know people who coach with him played for him. He's a good coach but these guys are all trying to do a thousand things at once in the heat of a game and they absolutely need someone that they can trust in their ear to help them with decision making because I really do think games are being won and lost because of bad decision making by coaches. All right. Interesting. Slater games this week we start with the first 9am game. At commanders the culture 4.5 point favorites. This is of course in London.
Look, the commanders had an awesome win last week. They had some amazing things happen. A guy, a linebacker comes in, places first snap and it's a winds up becoming a pick six and the commanders get a big win over the Seahawks defending champs. Great for them but they're still really beat up. In fact, I believe Sam Cosme, their opponent will write guard, didn't even make the trip. Nick Cross. Steve is banged up. They still aren't going to have Jaden Daniels. So give him a lot of credit. I think Mariona has actually played well when he is filled in but there's a lot of injuries going on with this team and when you're injured up front, the way they are on the offensive line, not that the Colts are a juggernaut but Washington's defense is not very good and I think they're going to struggle with Jonathan Taylor who's already off to a great start as usual. Daniel Jones. Still an alright, three touchdowns, three interceptions but again, this is not in Washington. It's a neutral field.
The Colts come in much healthier. They don't have peers but they've got Ty Warren, they have Taylor, offensive lines very good. They'll get some pass rush going. They are playing some young guys on defense so they'll give up some points but I think offensively they will overpower the commanders. Patriots, bills, men, the bills are an absolute mess. I mean, they really are a mess right now. They are struggling with turnovers. Drake May is not playing good football. They're jockeying between Ramondra Stevenson and Travion Henderson, their defense has been a sieve. They've got a win over the Stathach, they caught the Steelers at the right time a couple of weeks ago but obviously they lost their opener to the Seahawks and then they've just got pummeled. Absolutely pummeled against the Jaguars and now they won't have Christian Gonzalez or Barmore, their defensive tackle in this game against the bills. They are running into the bills at the wrong time.
The bills are hot. Josh Allen playing really well. It's in Buffalo which is always a difficult place to win. Buffalo's running game has been very punishing as it usually is with Cook leading the way and with Josh Allen adding a lot. I just think the Patriots, I trust them because I trust Mike Vrayble to turn things around eventually but they're in a rut right now and it is hard not to wonder if some of that offseason turmoil that Vrayble was entangled with. It's affected them. Preparation wise or distraction wise, I don't know but the Patriots certainly look like the Super Bowl hangover team. There's no doubt about it about that. Jets at Bears. The Bears are going to just be a pain in the neck for every team whether they're injured or they're not injured. I'm assuming they're going to go a Beijing. Ben Johnson said that he knows what direction he wants to go in at quarterback while Caleb
Williams is out. He's not going to say, I know Case Keenan played so brilliantly against the Eagles. Ben Johnson, he's the type of guy that I think is smart enough to realize that Keenan had some magic moments there and that what he really wants is his back up. The guy he anointed as his number two. They gave an extension to Bajin. They feel like he's good for the offense so it would surprise me unless Bajin isn't ready or has a setback or a concussion. It would surprise me if Bajin did not play. Let me tell you one thing about Ben Johnson because he's getting a lot of love. He's getting a lot of adulation as he should. He's an arrogant guy but he walks the walk. He talks to talk. In Chicago, this is an interesting time for the Bears for Chicago. They have always been a franchise for decades that has gotten average at best quarterback play. They've gone to Super Bowls with average quarterbacks. You know, obviously when you think of the Bears, you think of the 86 Bears defense and
Walter Payton, of course. You don't think of Bears and think of great quarterback play. You think of the Bears going through basically on a new quarterback every three or four years. You don't think of the Bears and think of offense. You think of the monsters of the midway. I just pardon me wonders if Ben Johnson turned down a couple of jobs two years ago. Because he always had his eye on this job because in Chicago, in the Midwest there, it's God, it's Dicca. And I don't know who number three is. All right. But it might be Ben Johnson right now. OK. I mean, he might be the third most popular bear in the history. I'm just a little bit, but he has an opportunity the way he runs his offense and with how prolific they are to really, especially if they win and if they win the big one, right? At some point, I don't think it's going to be this year, but we'll see. He has an opportunity to establish himself as an absolute legend in that city in a way that
nobody else has, you know, for decades, centuries. Because the Bears have just never, you just never think of them for their offense. They've had some good offensive players throughout the years, not that many. They've had some, but this guy and this offense is just amazing to watch. And I give the Jets here, you know, they are four and a half point underdogs. I give them credit. I think, you know, despite some botched calls by Aaron Glinn that I mentioned, the Jets have played well. Jeal Smith has played well. They've they've ran the ball well. Now they'll be without a breeze hall. So they'll be on Braille and Allen, but the kid that they drafted in the first round, Sadeek, the tight end, who was a top five overall prospect. He fell to the middle rounds because people don't take tight ends that high other than Kyle Pitson. That didn't really work out. People don't take tight ends. So he fell, but he's a great player. He has, I had a hundred yard game last week.
He had a touchdown in his first game. You know, he was slowed because he had surgery in the off season that slowed him down. But he with Garrett Wilson, give Geno Smith some good weapons. Smith has had a good year so far. I think this will be a competitive game. But the problem with the Jets is now one and two, no more moral victories. You know, they kind of got that even though they blew the game against the Packers because of Aaron Glinn's decision, people were like, hey, you were up 10 on the Packers. Not bad. Okay, no one thought that was going to have right after you wiped the floor with the Titans. How good are you? Okay. And then you get to week three and you have a chance against the Lions. That game was close. You know, they lose 31, 24. That game was neck and neck for quite a while. The Jets were down 17, 10 and it was 24, 10 and you thought they were out of it. And then it's 24, 24 because you know, there was a touchdown pass. But then obviously the Lions go and score one more.
The Lions are prolific offensively so it doesn't surprise me. But the Jets have had back to back moral victory type of games, but you can only get away with those so long. Eventually, you got to go in and win a game and look, the Bears will be on their back up. The Eagles couldn't do it. The Eagles made mistakes. Maybe the Jets can be a little more balanced and give the Bears a challenge. But let me tell you, man, Ben Johnson. He's definitely walking the walk. He's looking up to Jaguar caterer. That carries really well into the next game. Jaguars, Bengals, you know, the Liam Cohen tenure in Jaguar has got off to a rocky start. He kind of said he wasn't going to take the job. Then he did and then the people in Tampa Bay, where he was offensive coordinator, got upset. You said you were staying, then you left and then he had an introductory press conference that didn't go so hot. And then the Jags didn't really start off hot last year and then they started getting it. They started understanding the offense. They started really putting things together and then they won a bunch of games in the second half last year. And here they are.
Two and one coming up. They just smoked absolutely smoked the Patriots had a tough loss week two to the Broncos. It was close. They lost 2013. They smoked the Browns in week one that was hard to like gauge because it was the Browns at the time. But now it doesn't look so bad. They're clicking. You know, Parker, what they they have the offense that the Eagles are trying to get, you know, they're trying, they run a wide zone. They got some big guys who can block, you know, they drafted a kid on day two, tied in, who can catch and block. They got Parker Washington out there. He's a big strong kid from Penn State who's really becoming one of the better wide receivers in this league. They can run the ball explosively with Tuton. They can pound it a little bit with Rodriguez and Trevor Lawrence is playing great football. And you can't take it. They're a good team and their defense has been excellent since last year. This is a very tough team. And I tell you what, Brian Thomas Jr. is not a part of it. They have they he'll be the first guy this season traded.
Well, I guess there's already been a trade. JJ McCarthy will get into that in a second. But I wouldn't be surprised if Brian Thomas Jr. got traded. Why hold on to him? He is not a part of their offense anymore, at least not a major part. So I mean, maybe he's worth investing more time in for them. I don't know. But he is not a guy that when you think of the Jaguars right now, you think that's it's because that guy who had such a great rookie year is a big reason. You got the Bengals. The Bengals are two and one. So they welcome the Jags. This should be a very good game. The Bengals defensive shown finally that it's improved. I mean, I get it. They just beat the Texans, held them to six points. The Texans are a bad offensive team. You know, they gave up 27 of the Buccaneers in week one. I think the Bucks had some defensive touchdowns in this game. Maybe so. The Bengals defense is improved offensively. They've been okay. You know, I don't even thought with Borough healthy and he's playing great and Higgins and Chase are good and Chase but I find it. They are a good offense.
They are favored by two and a half in this game, which is pretty interesting. They're not getting the home three. That shows you the respect the Jaguars are getting. The Bengals have tried to also become a team that leans into under center and multiple tight ends and play action. It hasn't always gone well for them from that. They still to me seem like a better, more functional offense when they're in shotgun and Borough is looking around the field and he's able to maneuver around the pocket a little more. But two very good teams right now and whoever wins this game is going to feel really good about itself at three and one. Cardinals at Giants. Cardinals are hitting the road here. Two and a half point favorites over the Giants. Giants are obviously a mess. They lost Jackson Dart. James Winston looked about as terrible as you might expect him to look even though they beat the Titans, they won 12-7. They had a chance to lose that game and then cam ward through a really bad interception in the end zone. That's how the Giants escaped with a win. The Cardinals are putting things together offensively.
Interestingly, I talked about Brian Thomas Jr. It does not seem like Marvin Harris and is any reason for why the Cardinals are able to score points. The Cardinals lost last week 36-30 against the Niners. They had 26 against the Chargers. They were outclassed by the Seahawks. They're not very good. They can score points against bad teams. The Giants just lost Brian Burns, one of the best pass rosters. That's going to be an issue for them. Honestly, because you don't know which James Winston shows up on a weekly basis, which is I guess why they traded for Jay-Jay McCarthy. If folks, Giants fans, if you're listening, if this thing gets to Jay-Jay McCarthy, I hope they did not trade for Jay-Jay McCarthy thinking, give us three or four weeks and we'll make him into a starting quarterback. I hope that's not the case because I don't think that that's exactly what the Giants need at this moment. I mean, yes, they need good quarterback play, but I don't know that that guy is the one to give it to him.
I know it's a 1 o'clock game for a West Coast team traveling to the East. I talked about that last week. It's not what it used to be. However, the Seahawks went and traveled to Washington and did not play well defensively at all and lost the game. So I can understand why the Giants, why someone would want to believe the Giants could win this game. The Cardinals are 2 1 1 2 and a half point favorites though. I'd be scared of that. But the Cardinals can score points against bad teams. Save with digital deals at Vons and Albertsons. This week at Vons and Albertsons, Ginny O 93% lean ground turkey is 3 99 per pound. I'll just say this. Hey, Sean Manion, you're the guy that the Eagles hired among several candidates. And I'm not talking about like, table and McDaniel turned it down. They brought in six or seven guys and many of them had play calling experience or OC experience or at least more coaching experience. So I say this, you impressed the Eagles coaches and brass. Something you said, something you showed them, something you did, how you presented yourself, impressed them. Alright, now you got one hand tied behind your back.
You got a beat up offensive line. You got no demands. They smith and Dallas got it. Alright, you still have Jalen Hertz. Still have two of the best offensive tackles in the game. You still have a rookie first round pick, McIlemin. You have a kid in tae wicks who knows your offense. I'm not saying no excuses because it's very fair to say you're under man against this Rams team. But show up. Show the world or at least Eagles fans why you were hired. Why the Eagles believed you were a great, you would be a great play caller and a innovative schema. This is your opportunity to do that. One o'clock game also Packers at bucks. The Packers are three and a half point favorites despite the fact that they've been a train wreck. I'll get to the Packers in a second. I got to get this off my mind. I spent the early part of the show talking about bad decision making from coaches and how they operate late game decisions.
I want to take a second to talk about personnel decision making. This is whether it's a coach or whether it's a GM. But Baker may feel it is hurt. It's going to be out a couple of weeks. I think it's his thumb. Okay. The the bucks backup quarterback is an undrafted free agent named Jalen Daniels. Okay. Not Jalen Daniels. Jalen Daniels. All right. That's their backup quarterback. And by the way, not just an undrafted free agent, an undrafted rookie. This is his rookie year. Most I'm going to be willing to get. But yes, that most people who listen to this show did not know who Jalen Daniels was. That he was Kansas his quarterback last year. Okay. How when you are Todd Bulls and your team really blew it last year and Jason Light, the GM, you guys blew it last year. You had a chance to pull away in the NSE South. You lost a lot of close games. You imploded. You had injuries.
And then you lost it to a Panther team that finished eight and nine. All right. How do you go into this season? First, you don't pay Baker Me Field. Then you give money and then you make a bunch of free agent signings. You have your coach on the hot seat. How do you go into the season with a undrafted rookie as your backup quarterback? Have we not learned? It's not just in Philadelphia. I mean, come on. I know in Philadelphia, we know about the importance that the Eagles place on the quarterback position veteran backup quarterbacks. How important they've been. It's not just Philadelphia. They're not the only team that does that. A lot of teams really believe in that. How can the Bucks put themselves in the position when they have a guy like Baker Me Field who tends to get stuck in the pocket, he fumbles, he throws picks because he's moving around all the way, he gets hit a lot. How do you have Jalen Daniels as your backup quarterback? I am perplexed. Perplexed by this. So I'm on my high horse about it.
I can't believe they would leave themselves in that position. Trade for somebody. Do something. Find a veteran somewhere. You know, the Eagles kept four quarterbacks. The Steelers kept four quarterbacks. This is something that should have been done. Eons ago. And now you have to play a game which Jalen Daniels as you're starting quarterback. Now having ranted like I just did watch, the Bucks will probably figure out a way to win this game. Packers are a mess. They've had all sorts of offensive line injuries. They lose Jalen Reed now. Love that kid. It was tough to see him leave for the season with a neck injury. I hope he winds up being okay. But the Packers are in an identity crisis. They can't run the ball. They can't protect the pastor very much because they're offensive line. Stinks on ice. They went and signed a bunch of guys. Kevin Zitler, they signed another guy to or to their practice squad earlier this week as they try to like, you know, beckton, McIbeckton, Former Eagle. They're trying, but it's like too little too late here.
They really need to turn it around. They have to figure it out. Love is thrown for a lot of yards. 844 yards to three weeks. But all he's doing is dropping back and throwing. You can't. That's a great way to get your quarterback killed. They have no running game. These are just not the Packers that I am, I've become familiar with. They have an identity crisis because they don't have the players and the scheme. They get their 11 personnel, not 12 personnel. They're passing the ball over to plays. When you know Matt LaFlor wants to run, I think they can still beat this buck in the years team because the bucks are in shambles. So it's a little bit fortunate for the Packers that they get this opponent and they better win for their sake and get to 2 and 2 because then it's Bears, Cowboys, Lions after that. All right. Man, the Ravens offense has been pretty cool to watch with their new offensive coordinator, Declan Doyle, who of course came from the tree from Ben Johnson, who we talked about. He also was in Denver under Sean Payton. So this is a guy who's been under some really good offensive minds. And he's doing some different things with this Ravens offense. Zay flowers, for example, who's been limited by a hamstring injury. But he used to just run all these deep routes.
Now they've gotten him running all these motion concepts and crossing routes. It's cool. And Derek Henry is doing his thing. I don't know that it's completely comfortable yet for Lamar. Lamar only has four touchdown passes through three weeks. Usually he's a little bit more prolific than that and he's not running as much. But again, he's going under center. He's learning new things too. But the Ravens offense has definitely been fun to watch. It's working so far. They're playing well. They won the game last week without their left tackle. Stanley, I think he'll be able to play this week. So they're not, they haven't been at full full strength. But they're running on cylinders. They're doing well. And the Titans will be prepared to play. But this is going to be a tough game for them. I mean, they're O and three. They're really trying to get cam board unlocked. He was starting to heat up in the second half against a Giants last week. Then he just threw an atrocious interception in the end zone at the end of the game that just killed all their momentum.
Cowboys at Texans, amazingly, the Texans are three point favorites. I mean, I was joking last week that Nico Collins is showing that he's the league MVP because when they don't have him, the Texans offense goes in the tank. Now I think he is expected to play this week. And that is huge because when they don't have a passing game with Nico Collins, everybody just crowds the box against them and tries to dare them to run the ball. And they don't have that good offensive line or running game to be able to run against heavy boxes or run against defenses that are designed to take him out. So Nico Collins should help open up the passing game and they are a little bit different. Remember, they scored 31 points against the bills in the season opener. They didn't have Nico last week. They don't score at 17 against the Colts. They lost 20 to 6 of the bangles. Apparently, this is just the modus operandi for Texans every year. They're going to start off slow. But eventually that catches up to you. And if they don't beat the Cowboys, then they'll be 0 and 4.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys have their own issues. They can score. Press got to playing well. They're running the ball well. Lams playing well. I mean, you think I'd sound like a team. I'm talking to the team is 3 and 0, but their defensive issues continue to persist. Now I listen. I watch that game against the Ravens. And I'm going to tell you this, OK? Despite what the final score was, I thought I saw some improvement. With the defense. I know they give up 31 points. OK, and that's kind of like the standard for the Cowboys these days. They had some big stops. OK, at the end of the game, they had a big stop. They had some big stops on Derek Henry. This thing is not going to be an overnight success for them. They're learning entirely new scheme. Christian Parker is trying to figure it out on the fly as well. They're relying on a rookie linebacker from Michigan, Jay Sean Barron, who's playing well, but he's still a rookie who's wearing the green dot because overshones hurt. And they've had injuries at the position. They have more injuries in the secondary. They're safety one on IR, who's very good.
They pay a lot of money for him, Jaylen Thompson. So it's going to be continue to be lose guys to injury, lose guys to injury. But you want the young guys to get better. All right, that's what Caleb Downs makes a pretty impressive place. All right, their pass rush can be all right at times. Their secondary is still rough, but now they trade for Joey Porter, Jr. We'll see. I don't know if they're planning to get them on the field this week. They might need a week who knows he will help. It's certainly going to be an asset for Christian Parker. But trust me on this, their defense is getting a little better. And now they have a chance to play a Texan's team that just is so sorry offensively that it's sometimes painful to watch. All right, the four o'clock games, you get dolphins and Vikings. This is a fascinating game to me because the Vikings win. They're three, you know, they'll go to four and a 10 point favorites. The dolphins just are, it's not that they're trying to lose, but they have no talent. They're going to lose a lot of games. Okay, but what's baffling, what's amazing to me is the Vikings are doing it again.
They're getting horrific quarterback play and winning games. Right? I mean, Murray got hurt. Tyler Murray in the first game. So then when's Cadet came in and played well, then they lose nine, or no, they win nine through over the bears. When's does not look good. It's down poor, whatever. They go back to Murray for week three. They're okay, but not great. I mean, you wouldn't have watched that game or even did some box score. I mean, Murray was 15 to 29. He threw a touchdown and an interception. He's not playing great. He's learning the new offense. So maybe things get better for him. But I just wonder, can this, can this, can this, uh, Vikings seem just continue to win all these games despite getting average quarterback play? It appears that that's how they're doing it right now. Uh, I just want to do wonder if O'Connell at some point will say, I know he's flawed, but we got some receivers here, you know, Justin Jefferson, who I know he got hurt. He is out. This is going to be difficult. I mean, they'll still, they should still be the dolphins, but Jefferson's going to be out.
I do wonder if O'Connell will look over at Wenz and say, that guy might give me a better chance. As long as I can keep him from doing some crazy stupid stuff, which he didn't do that much over last year, uh, if I can just keep him a little bit under control, he can give me that deep ball that I'm just not going to get with Kyler Murray. He can give me that explosive play that I'm just not getting with Kyler Murray. They're not going to give up on Murray three weeks into the season, especially when he had a concussion this week too. I'm talking more about seven or eight weeks from now. What does it look like for the Minnesota Vikings? Great game, 425. Can't believe we're saying this is a great game, right? Chiefs, Raiders, two, three and no teams. The Chiefs were awful last year. Didn't make the playoffs. Everybody was ready to put them away and say they're not the team they used to be. And they're not Raiders. Raiders have already won as many games this year as they won all of last year. It's amazing. So this is going to be a fun game in Kubeak doing a great job with the Raiders.
Brock Bowers came back last week, had a ton of catches over a hundred yards. And I'm going to tell you this right now. I have no equivocation saying this. If Brock Bowers stays healthy and if Clint Kubeak is the head coach that I think he's going to be pretty good. If he could be head coach of the Raiders for at least five years and Brock Bowers is healthy for those five years, not only will Bowers go straight to Canton with the yellow jacket. He will be off inbound. He by the time his career is over, if this duo works out for the long term, will probably go down as the greatest tight end in NFL history. He is not a normal human being. He is a match-up nightmare. He does things wide receivers wish they can do in the body of a tight end. And he's got a guy in Clint Kubeak who absolutely knows how to get the ball through a guy that good. So I'm as offensive coordinator for the C-Lawks last year. And what he did for Smith and Jigba, who's continuing that even without him.
But Clint Kubeak can be the guy, Brock Bowers, if he can stay healthy. That's a big big if, especially playing that position. That could be really special. Chiefs, I think it's amazing that they continue to ride Travis Kelsey, who has over 230 receiving yards already, had a big touchdown, big game last game. He continues to be a big part of their passing offense. Because they just don't have any other weapons in the receiving game. I told you a couple of weeks ago, maybe it was last week, I repeated it. When they went out and got Kenneth Walker, that was part of a transition for them that they're going through. Do they want, does Andy Rivewanda get back to throwing the ball? Heck yeah, he does. Yeah, this might be a one to two year thing where he's just riding Kenneth Walker. But he's got to get his receiving core and his offensive line straight now. Been a mess at left tackle for a few years now. Have a great center, you have a great right guard,
but he's been a mess at the tackle spots. The left guard spot has been a carousel. It's finally got stability to it now. But he needs to run the ball for stability right now. And Walker's doing a great job getting yards. He's been a real fine, I mean, not a fine. Everybody knows how good he is, but he's been better with Kansas City than he was with Seattle. And they will continue to ride him. And if they can finally get somebody to wake up in that passing games, if you're worthy, hello, you know, Rishi Rice catches the ball over the middle. He's not not explosive. He just moves the chains. They need more. They shouldn't be relying on Travis Kelsey this much. And that worries me about them at three and a, compared to what they might look like 10 weeks from now. Broncos at 49ers. Well, the old guys continue to get it done. The 49ers are three point favorites. The old guys continue to get it done. Kittle has been unreal and has come back from the Achilles. McCaffrey has been good, not great, but really good. He does what he does.
The guy who's been special is party. I mean, he has nine touchdowns, one interception. His rushing is a ability to leave the pocket and continue to get yards. Has been a real bonus for the offense. I mean, they are depleted at receiver. It sounds like Mike Evans is going to try to play despite a rib injury, but they've lost other receivers already. I mean, they're not very deep in that category. They can have to rely on Kittle, you know, a lot of thigh on McCaffrey as a receiver and a runner. But I mean, you're taking guys away from party and he's playing great. Now he's got to do it against the Broncos. And the Broncos have a very good defense. You've got to give the Broncos a lot of credit. They came back from down, I think it was 16 nothing against the Rams. Last weekend, prime time. Did they get a very, very favorable call on the game winning drive? Yeah. I think it was Pat Bryant, the receiver committed offensive pass interference. And instead they called defensive pass interference. And if you really watch it in real in slow mo and real time too,
it's clear the wide receiver initiated contact. That was a bad call. And it gave the Broncos the ball deep in their territory. Then there was a legal handset of face call. That was legit. It was sort of like a snake bitten thing for the Rams. I mean, the Rams were controlling that game. And then you get a couple of a couple of plays, a pick six. That's great. Give the Broncos credit for that. But they got help in that game or else they would be one and two right now. So I'm very interested to see how they match up defensively against the 49ers. The Broncos, you know, they can play man. They can play zone. They got great cover guys. They're not afraid to blitz, but the 49ers do so much with their motion principles and concepts. And you should get such a big part of their both run and run action game and Kyle Schaienhands just unbelievable in his scheming. I don't think post is going to be back for them. Their defense is still taken a lot of hits, but the 49ers or three and a half, even if they lose this game, I think you'll still feel good about how the 49ers have been able
to withstand their annual slate of injuries and how they function offensively. And then you'll see if that defense can come together as it gets a little healthier down the road. Charger Seahawks is the last 425 game. Hey, you know, even defending champs can play a bad game once in a while. They went over to Washington. They just did not play well defensively. I'm a little surprised by that. I don't want to say I'm worried for them, but with the 0 and 3 chargers coming to the chargers have been as horrific of an offense as you can imagine. And actually you couldn't imagine it because you thought with Mike McDaniel running the show that they were going to be unbelievable, but Herbert has not played well. He's been turnover prone. Hampton is not running the ball. So you kind of wonder, does we've talked about this with the Eagles? Did they have the wrong personnel for the scheme? They're trying to run. I don't know. I think it's really interesting, like the whole offseason OC triangle of table and Mike
McDaniel and which one would the Eagles want? And then they both spurred the Eagles and they go with Manion. Well, all three of them are struggling. I mean, table struggling with cam warden the Titans. McDaniel is clearly not finding an answer so far for the chargers. And Manion is going to the motions with the Eagles. Who would have thought that? All three of these guys would be struggling the way they are. But I don't like Owen three teams, man, especially teams that were playoff teams from a year before that have good talent. It's just like you're waiting for them to wake up and when they do it can get ugly. So again, the C1X are seven point favorites. Little bit for me. I do think at some point the chargers are going to snap out of it and start to get it. And then when they do, they might really take off. But they've got a big problem of tight end right now. They're missing Kohler. He's out. The joke who's out. So Aronde Gadson is now their number one tight end. And he's really a glorified pass catcher. He doesn't block anybody. So Mike McDaniel has to go back to the drawing board to figure out how to get the run game going
because you're not going to get the pass game going until you get the run game called. Lions Panthers is the Sunday night game. Oh, man. You know, the Panthers, I'm excited for them because we've seen Bryce Young play for two weeks. He played a pretty good game, putting the ball in the air. I mentioned there are offensive play quality or Brad Idzick was doing a nice job. Then they kind of lay an egg against the Browns. They lost Coker in the middle of the game, which is tough and their run game has been hurt, which is tough, but they just didn't play a good game. And now they go play a Lions team, at least they're at home, but they play a Lions team. They've lost both of their starting corners. JC Warren and Mike Jackson. The Lions are the last team you want to play when you are depleted in the secondary. I mean, the Lions, even on a way from home on grass can score it up to mere Gibbs. He's just he might be the best overall playmaker in the game. I mean, he is just unstoppable.
St. Brown has been good. Goff has been good. I mean, the Lions are going to score points here against the Panthers. They're going to try every possible way to exploit a Panther secondary that is really beat up unless the Panthers can figure out a way. They have a good DC, the Euro-Everop if they can figure out a way to slow down the Lions, God bless them because it's not an easy thing to do. The Lions have not always looked harmonious on offense this year, but when they've needed to, they seem to dial it up. They scored 31 against the Saints. They scored 31 losing to the bills. They scored 31 against the Jets. So they're pretty, you can put them down for 31 at least against the Panthers unless things go woefully wrong. Can the Panthers, they will have, I believe they'll have co-create for this game. So they'll be a little healthier with their receivers. Can they match the Lions? That would be, and this game being on prime time, would be a big feather in the Bryce Young cap and the Brad AIDS and Cap. It's a big challenge. So that's going to be a tough one for them. And then the Monday Night Game, I don't know why this is the Monday Night Game, but the
Falcons again in prime time for the second straight week. Coming off that big Thursday night massacre over the Packers, now go play the Saints. It's a big NSC South rivalry. These teams don't love each other. You know that. It'll probably be very chippy. It's in the Super Dome, just typically a very, very difficult place to play, but however, the Falcons play there quite a bit. The Saints have to stop blowing games. They were down earlier to the Lions in week one, came back, lose. Okay. They gave them all the credit in the world for beating the Ravens. That was great. Thought it was a really important win. How they follow it up. They have a lead against the Raiders and they blow that game. They turn the ball over late in the game. And now they don't have Travis ATN. He's on IR. So the Saints are going through it a little bit here. You know, there's some expectation for them. A lot of people had them as a breakout team. I liked them. I thought them and the Bucks were going to do it out for the NSC South. Now it just might be the Saints in the... I don't know.
We'll see how the Falcons do in this game. Maybe the Panthers catch fire again at the end of the year. We'll see. But the Saints can win this division, but you've got to beat your division teams. You've got to win your home games. And you should be able to beat the Falcons. Listen, Bijan ran roughshod over the Packers. I told you the Packers are a mess. It doesn't make me think the Falcons are a fantastic team. You know, they got blown out by the Panthers the week before and they open their season with a loss of the Steelers. So I'm not sitting here thinking that the Falcons are all that special. Now I get it. They have Michael Penix now instead of Cooper Rush. So maybe the week one and week two, I'm not giving enough weight to the fact that they're on a third string quarterback. Okay. I still think the Saints are the better team. And this is a game that if you want to take them seriously, if they want to be taken seriously, then they got to win this game. I know I said that about them. Week two against the Ravens in Baltimore. And they won the game. Okay. Then you blew it against the Raiders. All right. The Raiders are an upstart team. Now come home and beat the Falcons.
You're better than the Falcons. They should beat the Falcons. And that's a look at the slate for the weekend. I am very excited because last week I went two and one in my picks. And I was off to a horrible start for the first two weeks. I was think one and five. Yeah, after the first two weeks. So I go two and one. I'm now three and six with my picks against the spread. And here are my picks for a week four. As begrudgingly as I'm going to do it, I can't look at the Packers getting three and a half over the bucks in Tampa and not take it because for all the reasons I talked about with the bucks on an undrafted rookie playing quarterback. They have other injuries too, by the way. So that's not their only one. They got some injuries at wide receiver. So it's not. It's not an ideal situation for the bucks at all. So I would say take the Packers three and a half, despite the fact that the Packers are a mess. I'm going to go with the Colts over the commanders in London three and a half. I think they'll cover that. I think they'll win this game. There's a good. They're going to.
I would assume they're going to score a lot of points. Well, they have to do is play some decent defense. And I think they'll win that game probably by a touchdown if not more. And give me the bills at home six and a half over a Patriot's team that can't find its way. I don't normally like to take division games, especially between two teams that you expect to be like really good like that, but the Patriots haven't been good. They seem very unprepared. They can't find their identity and the bills. They are getting the bills at the worst time. So I will take the bills winning that game by six and a half. And that's going to do it for the NFL Week 4 preview. Should be an exciting week as I tell you every week. Enjoy your football watching.
