Now, back to mornings with Greg and Eli. This hour is brought to you by James Gattas-Jewars. Here once again, Greg Gaston and Eli Savoy. We welcome you back to the program. Mornings with Greg and Eli on Sports 56 on 1075 FM can make sure your preset is sent to 1075. We are alive today broadcasting from Historic Colonial Country Club. It's the Youth Athletic Foundation Golf Tournament. We are very happy to be a part of that. Once again, Jay-Han producing the program back in the Family Leisure Studios. Family Leisure at 2120 Witten Road. That's just north of I-40. They got the world's largest spa cell going on right now. Today, currently 75 degrees. Got a mixture of clouds and sun. Straight shower, thunderstorm, possible. We're going to get a high of around 95. So one more really hot day.
I wish it was cooler today for the golf, but still should be a great time. Tomorrow, though, 89 for the high. Then Wednesday and Thursday, 83 with an overnight low of 60. So there is some relief at the end of the tunnel. Although it looks like over the weekend gets back up into the mid 80s and then early next week. I see an 89 on Monday and I see a 90 on Tuesday. But it's a lot better than 100 and 110. Keep in Dex. Hour two of the program is brought to you by James Gattis-Juller. 4900 popular between Mendenhall and St. Nick on the web at gattisjuller.com. You can find them on X Facebook and Instagram. They are your family's Juller. Your bridal engagement and anniversary Juller headquarters been providing those beautiful diamond engagement rings and all that fine joy for 60 years in counting. And every Monday and Friday, they bring you the Memphis sports fact. Did you know the University of Memphis will officially break ground today on the new Liza Welford Fletcher Stadium at a ceremony that begins at 1030. State of the Art Facility dedicated to the memory.
Liza Fletcher, beloved teacher, avid runner, inspiration for everyone. It'll be at the Billy J. Murphy athletic complex. It is open to the public in 1030 to whenever it wraps up probably 1130, maybe 12 o'clock. But they're going to break ground on that great facility looking forward to seeing that completion. Again, James Gattisjullers, open Monday through Friday, 10 to 5 Saturday, 10 to 4 closed on Sunday. On location today and on location with us, as he is with us every Monday during the college football season. His Memphis Tigers running back to Pride of Christian Brothers High School down. Hayden. Hello, down. Hey, how you doing? How you doing? Doing great. Good to have you out here. Have you ever been a colonial country club? No, sorry. I have not. This is awesome though. Very nice. Do you play golf at all? I do not, but my dad keeps telling me. I need to get into it because when I'm about his age, I love to play golf. Yeah, because you can't play football anymore. Does anybody else in the family play?
I actually know. So no. Yeah, you're not thinking golf when you're young. Your football player is not. And then when you get older, you're going to be like, what can I do that's still competitive? And that's what your dad's thinking. That's why he plays golf. I think you'll fall in love with the sport. But Saturday, you guys back on the horse after the loss at Boise and took care of business over UT Martin. A lot of guys got into the game. I mean, Coach Huff went really deep on the roster. You win 45 to 21. What was it like after the game in the locker room? What was basically said as you now get ready for the buy week? I mean, the vibes are great after a big win like that. We unfortunately suffered a loss the week before. And it was like a bad taste, honestly, all week. So to get back on the winning side was great. And after the game, Coach just told us, like he's proud of us, take this buy week to get healthy, to get better as we head into conference play. The for you to get an opportunity, get some carries, get some reps, what, after last week, obviously, you didn't even make the trip because you were beat up.
But what had it feel for you? That felt great because I've been waiting, honestly, for more opportunities. And I took a, I felt like I took a advantage of all my opportunities. And that's like mentality going into the game. Like everywhere I've been, just take advantage of all my reps. So I was happy for that. Levin Carrey's 85 yards, you're now averaging 6.8 yards per carry. Is that what it is? I didn't even know that. I believe so. Yeah, you're doing, does it feel like you've been getting about 6.8 yards every time you touch the ball? 6. Maybe that's 6.8, but, but no, certainly, that's a great per average, per yardage average there at 6.8 per pop. But you got a plethora of good running backs. It's a great running back room led by Jalen Carter. 12 carry 62 yards. I didn't have to be used as much because of, again, the opponent you were playing with all due respect
to the skyhawks, Manny Covey, Jordan Thompson, six carries for 110 yards in the touchdown. 299 yards rushing. A lot of that credit, certainly the running backs get a lot of the credit, but that credit, I think, a lot of it has to go to that offensive line. Not only the starters, but the guys who did come in later in the game, continue to do a good job opening up holes for you guys. Yeah, no, man. I love our offensive line. I feel like we got some of the best two deep units in our conference for sure. So I trust all those guys, and they did an amazing job all night. What is, when you've got a game like that, and your playing gets an FCS opponent, what's the mentality to make sure we go in and we just take care of business and don't let anything get crazy in this game? Well, mentality is you got to start fast because you give any team hope, like they have to start believing in. That's how upsets happen. So our mentality always start fast. Like don't play around with these guys,
because obviously like an opponent like us, like we're probably they're super bowl, because they have kids from the area that probably feel like they should be where we are. So we wanted to start fast and go out there and just show we're great to you. So I'm on the sideline doing my job, and I look up on the jumbo tron, and there I see the smiling face of Downhade and talking to kids. And I'm wondering what is going on? And then you sent me yesterday, you texted me this, champions for literacy, something you're involved, speaking to schools, give us all the details about that and how you got involved. So I've been working with champions for literacy since my junior year of high school. I did a pledge for every touchdown I scored, a certain amount of money was donated for kids, or schools in the area of Memphis, like for books. And growing up, you know, I took reading very serious, my mom made me read a lot, even though I probably really didn't want to, but she knew like how foundational it was. Right.
So that I've been working with them since junior year, and this year they wanted me to be the person. So yeah. Okay, so there is an event coming up on September 24th. Thursday, yes, sir. Oh, so that's this Thursday, champions for literacy, suits and sneakers. Tell everybody about that, how they can get involved, and how they can help out. So yeah, if you go to champions for literacy on Instagram, you can, if you want to attend the event, you can just click on the link and you can purchase a ticket or if you want to donate, they have a donation link as well. So how many, when you did the stuff in high school, how much did you earn? Because you scored a lot of touchdowns. I don't know if you build that or not, but you scored a lot of touchdowns in high school. So how much did you, how much did you end up raising through that? Oh, I think we raised a little over. I know my junior year, we raised up to 20 grand. I'm pretty sure my senior. Oh my gosh. Yeah. Exactly. I don't remember how many touchdowns you ended up with. I just always on. I know it was a hell of a lot.
That probably right there makes mom and dad and grandma and all your family more proud than even though all the touchdowns you scored, what you did with those touchdowns is what you did for people. And Christian brothers could have used about 10 of those on Friday night. That's no other than that. They needed a lot of those touchdowns. They could have used you scored a bunch on Friday night. I'm looking at the advertisement for the suits and sneakers and I also see Celo Jackson of the basketball team. And then who is this right here? Is it Courtney Collins? I think I named Channing. I can't see. Yeah, the things in the way. Softball players. That's great. So there's other athletes involved from the University of Memphis. Fantastic down. Okay. Let's dive into college football. We were talking earlier an hour one about the SEC games. Let's take a look at some other national games that took place over the weekend. It started off on Friday. There were three games on Friday. Miami beating Wake Forest, 33 to 20. Darian Mensa is just not throwing in completions.
And there are some people that believe he's the Heisman leader. I think it's turned into a chambles. What do you think about Mensa? They got Fletcher. They got Malachitone and this Miami team. It's a look. They don't always play great at Wake Forest for whatever reason. They ended up winning by 13. I don't think they covered the spread. But still it's another win for Miami. Right. That quarterback is really good. I liked them back when he was at Tulane and when he was at Duke last year. So Miami getting him from the portal. Like I was, oh, OK. He's Carson Beck's replacement. Like I feel like there won't be a drop off in. So far he's lived up to the hype. And then Mark Fletcher, really good running back. He's been there for a couple years. And then Malachitone is just a Letcher player. Yeah. Where would you rank Tony with receivers? And you got to put your My Smith one. Yeah. Your My number one. Yeah, for sure. I probably say Tony's two, for sure. Over Coleman. For some other Texas. Yeah. Yeah. I would say, I would say Mally's probably number two. Yeah. The thing I get, you know, he Smith is a, like he's just a, you look at him. You know, this dude's a physical freak of nature.
Tony's not that. He's just unbelievable. Like a video game. Yeah, he just can get open because he nobody can stick with him. Like it's crazy. Well, he need the number one pick. Smith, is there a quarterback out there that will go one? I feel like, hmm. It's a good thing. It's a good thing. Yeah. I feel like a quarterback will go one. I feel like if you're a team, like with the number one pick, how do you not pick like someone like Jeremiah? Like, yeah, I, I've said that if I was an FL team, I would be tanking to try and get you. Yeah. That dude is a, it's, he's insane. And again, now we'll see now with one of these teams that passed on all the quarterbacks this past year, if they get it, then they may go that route. But if you're any one of them that has a quarterback at all, I, I don't, it wouldn't even be a question in my mind I would pick you number one. And going back to Mensa, going to Miami, I mean, we've heard some astronomical dollars out there. There were, I mean, I don't know if that's the same thing you've heard or know, but like six million dollars,
that even possible for one guy. I mean, what they say last year, Carson Beck, got a ridiculous amount like, and they put him from Georgia. So I honestly believe that's what Miami's doing. Yeah, there's, there's, there's, there's, and he got a Lamborghini too. They're spending a ton of money on the quarterback position. It worked last year. And now they're trying to get in the chair. So, they don't do it again next year, I'm sure with whatever quarterbacks are out there. I do have to ask you about, Trinidad Chambles, the story's unbelievable, right? You know the story, he was, he was a quarterback. It was the FCS level or division two division two. Division two. And then of course he gets the starting job when Austin Simmons goes down. He would have probably been a first round selection. Yeah, right? Yeah, no, Trinidad's a really good QB. Design is the go back to school. Now he's being paid, paid handsomely, but he would have been a first rounder. So that's first round NFL money. You go back to college, obviously you're betting on yourself. And there's a long way to go, but God forbid something happened. How tough of a decision, and I'm asking you to get into his mind, but how tough of a decision would that be as an athlete
to return to play one more year at college and to give up, not just playing in the NFL, but being a first round pick when you know that, you know, you could harm yourself with an injury or bad play. It was the like, we're in a different stage in college because of NIL. You see more and more players like in basketball, football, like returning back to school because they feel like they'll make that money up on the back end once they get to the professional life. And they feel like they coming back, they can improve their stock and make probably the same amount of money or sometimes even more depending on how good of a player you are. So honestly, feel like that's what goes in the people's minds. When they're on the board or making that decision. You obviously have it bent at the pro level, so you can't, but one of the things that's weird to me, and I brought this up a couple of weeks ago, and we saw it again yesterday in the NFL with Jada Daniels at Caleb Williams and these quarterbacks going down. In the NFL on a weekly basis, we see seemingly
star players go down with injuries, many of them serious injuries that cost them multiple weeks or the seas that are whatever. Like there's quarterbacks all over the place. There's guys, there's guys heard everywhere. In college football, we don't see that. Like the star players, like you go down all of these teams, like they're not missing their quarterbacks. The quarterbacks are all healthy and playing. They don't ever seem to get, why is it just the wear and tear as you go further into your NFL career that you're gonna end up getting hurt? Or do you have any theories to why we don't see nearly as many of these big injuries in college as we do in the NFL? That was a really good question. I feel like, is it just their old bigger, faster, stronger? I feel like that's part of it. And I feel like you're gonna have more wear and tear and professionally getting in. I feel like more NFL guys, like they have their own personal trainers as well. So I don't know if that could possibly play. In fact, like in college, everybody trains together. Like in the summer, you have a strength program. You have a conditioning program.
In NFL, they do have strength coaches, but from what I see on Instagram and things of that, like people seem to have their own people like that they trust the train number, whatever. Because I mean, that's on a weekly basis. We see probably four, five, six teams that don't have their starting quarterback play. Yeah. College it never happens. I don't know, I think if you go down to top 25, every one of them has their starting quarterback healthy. Like it just, it's weird. It just doesn't seem to happen in college. And I think it is a really good question. I certainly don't even have a guess, but we'll get to the NFL in a little bit, but we had some weird injuries, right? Williams went down. He wasn't even contacted. Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels got stepped on by his own lineman and then came down on the elbow, which was, he had the operation on the elbow before. So it wasn't just he got crushed by a bigger, stronger guy. But to Eli's point, I don't know, maybe it's the sound effects when I watch the NFL game, but watching NFL football yesterday, I don't know how many times I saw,
or I heard the hit and saw the hit and I go, my god, how's that guy getting up? Whereas in college, and I'm right there on the sidelines, once in a while you hear a big hit, you know, I'm sure you've taken some big hits, but it just doesn't seem like it's as numerous as the NFL. And I think maybe some of that is bigger, faster, stronger. But that's just a guess. Okay, there were two other games on Friday. I'm not sure you were probably watching football Friday night, I guess. Oh yeah, I watched Texas Tech. Yeah, Texas Tech, he's not watched the end of that. That was a really good game. 2826, so what happened there? I know Texas Tech is one of the best rosters money can buy. Houston's improved. Good coach Willie Fritz, who used to be in the American conference at Tulane. What happened there at the end of that game? At the end, Houston was driving, and they just couldn't convert like the two point conversion when they went for it on. They didn't get it. Just came up a little short. They came up a little short. It was a really good game though. Oregon beat Portland State 84 to nothing. Come on, Dan Laning. What are you doing? You know, they lose Oklahoma State, and it's almost like I need to put up all these points
to make it look great. I'm not a big fan of that. It's taking a lot of anger out there. It's taking a lot of anger out there. That's what it is. Well, coach off, they lost the boys, you stayed. He could have kept the starters in the whole damn game and put up 75, but he didn't do that. So I don't know about what Laning did. Saturday games, no other name over Michigan State, 27 to 10. I had a feel on Michigan State. Sparty was going to cover in that one, but nothing really to see there. Notre Dame is still one of the best teams in the nation. Indiana, Speed Western Kentucky 38. Now the Indiana hasn't played anybody yet, have they? Nope. Well, not quality. I don't think. They play North Texas. I'm pretty sure. Yeah, they play North Texas of the opener. And then they play. No, they haven't played anybody of note. I mean, no, they're good, but they haven't really played anybody. Who's there first, Big Ten? They get Northwestern this week. They've played North Texas Howard and Western Kentucky. They don't play. They're one of the teams that doesn't play a power conference opponent in their nonconversed. They got Northwestern Rutgers in Nebraska
before they get to Ohio State in Michigan. Yeah, that'll be the challenge. We can get to those two speed of Ohio State 59-3 over Kent State. Easy win there. BYUB Colorado State 41 to 23. I'm not sure how much of the Big 12 you watched, but you did watch that game between Texas Tech and Houston. Between Utah, BYU, Houston, Texas Tech, maybe Oklahoma State after beating Oregon. Who do you think's the best in the Big 12? Well, I have to like, you got to go Texas Tech. Just the money they put into the roster, obviously. So I would say Texas Tech is probably the favorite to win that count. But I want to sleep on, I want to sleep on BYU either. I like BYU. Yeah, coach. Their coach is a great program. Yeah, they're spending a lot of money, too. They're not spending Texas Tech money, but they're spending a lot of money. USC had to go all the way to Joyzie to play Rutgers. The only one by 7, 42, 35, Eli, do you think that was just, hey, we're saving stuff. We got a Oregon coming up this week. We should be able to take care of a team that lost a UMass.
I mean, those long road trips, like in the Big 10, we've seen it since those teams joined. Like the long road trips are a problem. Going both directions, teams have just had issues with that. No, I feel like longer road trips take a toll on the night, the team, like is obviously there's West Coast schools now in the Big 10. Like that's a little bit like a plus country. Like, you're in the middle of those times. I'm pretty sure teams leave probably a day before day would actually leave to get to those places to get adjusted in things that that nature. Well, you guys, and again, you didn't make the trip to Boise, but you made the trip the Vegas. These are three, three and a half hour flights. That's a long trip. Yeah, it worked out from Memphis against you at LV. It didn't work out against Boise State. You again, it's hard. But what's LA to New Jersey? I don't know what that flight is. It's gonna be five hours. Oh, yeah. I mean, that's like that. There's a cross to the end. They're literally you're flying them across the entire country for these trips with your USC going to New Jersey. Or the other way. Again, we've just seen it since they've joined. It is not been easy for these teams when they've had to make that cross-country trip.
I'm surprised with the money that they have in the power conferences on a cross-country trip like that, that they don't stop midway and let the guys go out an hour, grab some lunch or whatever and get back. Because there's always that all these big dudes are a bunch of them in that plane like Sardines and they haven't moved for five and a half hours. There goes their legs. I'm shocked they don't do that as well. Because I know they have. They have the dollars to do that. They certainly have the dollars to do that. Before we take our break, Penn State all over Buffalo 55-13. I just don't know how good they are. The Louisville game against SMU. I did. I got to watch a little bit of that before we started like warming up and stuff for our game. What you think? Both of those teams look good. I keep telling people, I think Louisville could possibly see Miami in the conference championship of the ACC and give them a challenge. Lincoln King holds his, my God, Lincoln's like that. Oh, so you known for Mo'Hion State? Yeah, Lincoln's there. Yeah, so his true freshman year was my second year at Ohio State. And me and him were pretty cool.
So yeah, Lincoln's always been a good quarterback. So I'm happy he's getting his opportunity to show what he can do. Well, they, I mean, it is set for them now. I mean, they don't have another great team on their schedule. It's just, and that, that game, SMU, Jennings was going in for the touchdown that would have put them on top, got hit, fumbled it through the end zone. And that, that was it. I mean, if he holds onto that scores, that touchdown, they go back on top, but they gave it up. Louisville goes down, scores the touchdown, go by two scores that it was over. But that was the play of that game. And that was a good hit. He just fumbled it out the back of the end zone. Michigan over UTEP 52 17. And then a bit of an upset. West Virginia undefeated 38 27. They beat Virginia. Tony Ali had seen that off to a great start. How about, what's his name? Now back at West Virginia, Rich Rod. The Duke and Melissa, the Duke and coach man, he can flat out coach. He still knows a thing or two about football. He finds a way.
I have no idea what quite a money they're spending on their football roster. But that dude, you give him opportunity. He can, he knows how to coach. That's a good, that's a good win to go into Virginia, to go into Charlottesville and get that dub. That's a good Tony Ali team. Talking football with Dow and Hayden, we're broadcasting live from Colonial Country Club, the Youth Athletic Foundation Golf Tournament. This is Mornings with Greg and Eli on Sports 56 on 1075. Memphis Sports Talk has moved. Sports 56 is now on 1075 FFF, same local voices, same big opinions, same home for the Tigers, Grizzlies, college football and everything Memphis. Turn us up, 1075 FFM. Now back to Mornings with Greg and Eli. This hour is brought to you by James Gattis Jewelers. Here once again, our Greg Gaston and Eli Savoy. Mommy's all right, daddy's all right, they just see my... There is now a, why do we have activity here in the ballroom at Colonial Country Club at the clubhouse as we get ready for a little breakfast and then after we wrap up our show, it's the Youth Athletic Foundation Golf Tournament we're happy to be here, Greg Gaston, Eli Savoy,
down Hayden on location, Jay Hamm, producing the program back in the family leisure studios. All right, so let's talk about some of the games, just a few of the games for this week in college football and then we'll dive into what happened in the NFL with one game to go in week two and that's tonight's game between the Rams and the Giants. How do you see Texas and Tennessee this weekend? I feel like that's gonna be a really good game. That quarterback from Tennessee to freshman, he's the truth. So I'm looking forward to see what he does and a big SCC matchup first text. You like him that much? That kid is good, yeah. I like him a lot and my dad was like, you know how obviously he follows because that's his alma mater. He kept hearing, he's like, they keep saying his freshmen is the truth and when he finally, why is he like, no, that kid is good. So they're gonna need to help him though, they're gonna have to run the ball and they've been banged up. Your dad knows all about running at Tennessee. So they run the ball well, I think they got a chance. I think they do too. I think that's gonna be a really good game in Texas. Texas better, they better come with it, especially in England. So yeah, that's a thing.
It's when you're on front of 110,000 people or whatever and everything else. I mean, again, it's just, it's gonna be crazy to see a manning playing for Texas in Oxford. There's a lot of things going on there and that's gonna be, that atmosphere is gonna be nuts. From what you've seen so far down and I know you haven't seen all the teams and not all the teams have played big time opponents. Georgia, kind of an easy schedule to start. They blew out Arkansas this past weekend. They get Oklahoma who's struggling this weekend. They're number two behind Texas. And then you have the Miami's, the Notre Dame's, all these teams, all missed. Obviously up to fourth. Who do you think's the best team in the country right now? Uh, that's a good, I guess you have to say Texas because I feel like they have the biggest win as well. I'll miss as a big win too, well, as you do as a usual. But I say Texas because they beat Ohio State. So I give Texas the nod as of right now. It's funny because I think a lot of people like believe that still when it comes down to it,
like Ohio State is the best team in the nation. I think there's a lot of people that believe that. Now they, they have a loss obviously. So you get right, but, but it was on the road at Texas. And obviously a very cool scheme, which they're going to for it feels like, and that's what they're going to show of the game too. So there are, you gotta give, I mean, Texas beating that team again, that's a great win for Ole Miss. But beating Ohio State, we may find out that Ohio State is the but maybe they go on and they win it all, but that beating that team because just pure talent, I feel like most people believe Ohio State's the best team in the nation. What do you think about Ole Miss and Florida this weekend? That's gonna be a good game. I feel like Ole Miss, they got to, they can't go in there by hungover from the win. The big win this weekend because Florida, Florida looks pretty good. They're running back, really good, Jaden Bah, really good player. So that could be an interesting matchup, especially at the swamp. So, yeah, Ole Miss was two years ago when they went down there and they had a chance still to make the playoff. It's quite having lost to Kentucky earlier in the year.
They went down there, they lost that game to Florida. That was what kept them for sure out of the playoff that year. Last year they got the win, but yeah, that's obviously a very difficult place to go play. Coming, I could, how much, when you have a big game, and again, this was that game last, that's as big as they've ever banned in Oxford with Lane and all that. How hard is it to kind of reset and be up for the next game? We talked about let downs all that stuff. How difficult is it as a player? I feel like it can be really difficult because when you have a big win like that, like it's hard to, I feel like sometimes the team getting their head like, oh, we're unstoppable. We can't be stopped and then they go out there like a egg and lose. So especially in SEC play, like you have to truly move on. Yeah, that's like, because you talk about like when you're playing at an FCS opponent, you've got to make sure you go quick. Because you come out and you're a little out of it early. Suddenly, Florida's got a three touchdown lead on it.
You're like, oh boy, now we got to try and dig ourselves out of this hole. Yeah, you don't always win a game because you're mentally stronger than the other team. You have to have the jimmy's in the jose. But if you're not, you can lose games. If you're not 100% focused on what you need to do, I'm not going to call us an elimination game. It would only be the second loss for either team. And I don't think by any stretch, especially in the SEC, that eliminates you from the playoff. But Texas saying I'm an LSU, somebody's getting the second loss this weekend. Texas saying I'm an LSU certainly had their chance to win in Oxford. Well, I didn't really watch that A&M Tucky game about top of score, obviously. And I know those A&M fans weren't happy, obviously. Do you know much about Will Stein, their new head coach? He came from Oregon. Kentucky, over there coach. They don't know much about him, but it looks like he's their trending in the right direction. Certainly are. OK, and then finally, Oregon, USC. USC, it's been a while. Since Lincoln Riley arrived there, we're finally
talking about them as a possible playoff team. Their 4-0 good start. Oregon, again, the lost Oklahoma state, inexplicable loss. At Oklahoma state, I didn't see that one coming. I don't think anybody did. Then he took it down on Portland State. How do you see that one? Right now, Oregon's the road favorite at the Coliseum. That's going to be a really good game. I feel like USC and Lincoln Riley, they can make a statement if they win this game. Because Lincoln, honestly, I feel like people think he's been underwhelmed underperforming there at USC. And they expect it better. So I feel like if they can get this win, they're going in the right direction, possibly have a chance to make the CFP. It's going to be an error because both head coaches really need the win. Riley is using it. People like it. The whole question, OK, yeah, that's when is he going to start winning the big game? They have them actually competing to be in the playoff. And then for Dan landing, already having a loss,
and there are the questions like, can he truly win the big one? He's got these talented teams that got to the playoffs, but they haven't been able to break through. If suddenly he's got two losses four weeks into the year, then it's going to be like, oh gosh, seriously, what is he doing? This was supposed to be the year with getting Dante more back, everything else. And if they have two losses already, with Ohio State still on the schedule, it will be, there will be people going, OK, seriously, like, what is he going to do? Why can't he get it done in the biggest way? One more thing about this past weekend, and we already gave our opinion, excuse me, Eli was pretty adamant about that being maybe the worst play in the history of sports, the ending of the Vanderbilt game. I heard about it. I didn't really watch that game, but I heard about it. But you know what happened, right? The fumble, right? It was the fumble. Yeah, but the whole situation, all the quarterback had to do was take a knee or go out of the back of the end zone. And if there was still time on the clock, then they would, they would pun it. And it would be over.
He decides to go back and then come up into the end zone. Instead of going out, he went the other way, and got hit and fumble. Right. A veteran quarterback, too. Yes, he did. How does that happen? Honestly, don't know how that happens. The coach told him to take a knee. Yeah, like, I've been like, he just, I don't know, I don't know how that happens. I really don't, in the history of football, I've never, I've never seen something like that. It's just like, I mean, I get the only thing I can think of is in that moment, he thinks he has to try and run out the entire clock. Right. He needs it. He's trying to get it to zero, which you don't have to. Like, it doesn't matter. Leave two seconds. Again, you're doing a free kick from the 20 yard line. They're not returning it to score. So you're fine. But I think it's just caught up in that moment. And for some reason, in his mind, he was thinking, I guess, that I've got to get the clock down to zero before I go down, which again, that it's just, it's, it's, it's a better quarterback and he's told,
I know it's a horrendous, you just, you can't be, you can't make that mistake. You just, hell, even, and the thing is like, even if he goes back and waits and then throws it a mile in the air down the sideline, the clock would have expired. Like, he could have done a lot of things. He did the one thing that you literally cannot do. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Are, are, are teammates usually forgiving? It depends, like, it honestly depends, like, obviously everybody want to stay together, like, and be a team, but I feel like in certain situations, it can be very tough as a team. So it could rip a team apart? Something like that. I want to say rip a team apart, but like, everybody in their mind is thinking like, bro, like you got to solve the game. I have that happen. Right. That's it. So like, what do you even, like, what do you say to? Like, I argue just like, I listen, Mama told me that if you can't, I don't think you say anything. This isn't one of those, like, again, you go,
oh, there's a lot of play. Like, this is bottom line. One guy made a bone headed play that literally cost the team to, it was over if he doesn't fumble the football. Always had to just take a deep, like, you know, so what can, I don't think you can say anything to be on this. Like, I just feel like you gotta take that one on the chin and try to go out there and dominate next week and get a win. And you hope that's not the one that keeps you out of a ballgame. Right. That would have been, what do you think? You would leave him alone and let him, I think I don't get over it yourself. I don't know what to tell you. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. You feel bad. The guy's hurting, but still, man, it's like your big boys, everybody thought they had a win and they get on the plane. They got a loss. They got a loss because the guy didn't listen to what the coach said and didn't do his job. This was not like you said, Eli, this wasn't a bunch of guys didn't do their job. Let's go back to that second quarter and we didn't get the first down on ball crap. He lost the game because that guy did what he did. He wasn't asked, I mean, he literally was only being asked to take a knee. Like he was, he didn't have to like, hey, go get a,
you need to get a yard on a first down and you didn't do it. Right. You literally were just asked to take a knee. That's all you were asked to do on a play. Just take a knee and you couldn't do that. You're gonna turn around like Bo Jackson running to the tunnel. You're gonna chuck the ball down the field. There's a million things. Don't do what you did. All right. Downs with us every Monday during the college football season from 8 to 9, Jay Ham producing the program back in the family leisure studios. Talk a little bit of NFL. Eagles in the Titans yesterday. Eagles went for the first time ever in Nashville. I'm not sure how many times they've played the Titans in Nashville, but they've never won there. And they end up pulling it out. Jalen Hertz touched on past the Darius Cooper. Not sure if you watched that with nine seconds left. The point I wanted to make about this game was the temperature
on the field on the playing source was 150 degrees. It was melting the plastic on the spikes. Yeah, on the cleats. Yeah, I thought that one person was putting water on the cleats because it was so like hot. Yeah, that was insane to me. I was like, dad. Have you ever had that? Have you ever had cleats melting? I've never had the melt, but I've been able like, I've been able to see like on turf. Like it does like burn like can burn your feet. So I've had to like take them off to give my like feet a rest. Yeah, it's put it in ice bucket. Yeah, it just, you know, more this got more players to say we need to have grass fields. Right. But it's man, I mean, that's just that's crazy to think it would be that hot. That turf gets that hot that it can melt clean. The thing. Yeah, I've always I've always felt like grass is better than turf, but that's just me. What's the hottest? You've played it. What what game is it this year? I'll probably say this year because Colorado had to dry heat. So like Arkansas State was hot as heck.
It was still hot this past weekend. Yeah, but Arkansas State was overly hot. Like pregame warm up. I was dreamt. Would you do? I mean, if you had been playing that at noon where the sun's bacon on you the entire time to you. That's the thing with yesterday. Obviously, you're playing at noon right now. Right. The sun is just baking the entire time. Would you rather play in the oppressive heat or the ice cold? That's a good question. I'm going to say we try to do this show. The cold is cold is. The cold is. The cold is already up. I've played in some cold environments in the big 10 big 12s. I almost say the heat for sure because the cold like sometimes you feel like you literally can't move. So you rather play in the heat. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. When it's when it's cold like. Like getting tackled down the earth because you got to go into turf and like the cold like swim or like Michigan. Like two cold. Did you ever play it? Have you played in a like a snow storm like where it was like the field covered in snow at all?
Yeah. Actually last year we played Kansas State and it was it was overly cold and snowing all the time. Really? Yeah. I'll get out to my things to like a big 10 game right here. So yeah. Don't you want to shut the advantage though? I feel like the running bags do have the advantage because people don't really want to tackle like when the cold. Plus you're making the move they know they can't react if they react to they'll slip or something because they don't know where you're going. Yeah. I feel like runners we got the advantage for sure when it comes to cold games. How different is it though like what do you like? Do you have to just run kind of differently knowing you can't make the sharp cuts that you normally would be able to make? Yeah. You got to like be careful because like if you try to do too much you'll slip and lose yards. So you do have to be careful. Honestly, I mean it's a runner's dream because you know you're going to get dead the ball and it's not going to be a lot of air rate. So. All right. A couple of other games aside from that Eagles Titans game want to bring up a down the Raiders are off to a 2 and 0 start. Kirk Cousins through three touchdown passes they beat the Chargers 26 to 14.
There's a couple of storylines. Cousins is playing well. They're 2 and 0. The thought is that Fernando Mendoza will be the starter maybe week three week four week five. I'm not so sure. Right. And then we have the Chargers and they are a disaster to start now. Jesse Mentor left and he went to Baltimore but for for Harball and especially for Justin Herbert who I think has been given the benefit of the doubt in this league and has nothing to show for it. And right now he is really really struggling. I did not see the Chargers starting 0 and 2. It losses to Arizona and to Las Vegas. Well hey I'm happy because you know that's my the Chiefs division but yeah I thought the Chargers really take that next step like at some point and I just feel like they really haven't like for whatever reason and I agree with you by Justin Herbert. I feel like people love giving them the benefit of the doubt. Yes. I feel like some like some point you got to start questions like is he really a top tier quarterback like the rest of these guys.
I think people want to put him in that category and he's just done nothing right. But they they've lost to the Cardinals and Raiders. They're schedule coming up at the bills at the Seahawks Broncos at the Chiefs at the Rams Texans at the Ravens. Oh my gosh. Yeah. They're done. You can finish. You can get ugly. I mean that's at the bills at the Seahawks the next two weeks like that's maybe the two best teams and football. And you're at both of their places like I it's yeah four of the next five on the road like it's yeah they could easily be. Oh and seven something like that easily really good. Yeah. Is Josh Allen the best quarterback in the league as a as a far. I'm not talking about some all time thing with Pat my homes and know that you're guy. Maybe right now the best quarterback. Josh is Josh is that a really good there are offenses of problems like him and James Cook together is like you're not giving me the answer.
I can't go against that bones though. You're still you're still going with that. Yeah. Really great start to coming back from that injury for the Josh is played really at a high level so with the way he's running the ball to like it's just. It's just it's great he's going to end up like top five in NFL history in rushing touchdowns. Yeah no he's like he's already in the top 10. Like it's different. It's hard to game playing against somebody as good as I really is. I didn't expect the Ravens to lose yesterday especially at home to the same that Tyler Schuck is pretty good. They found their quarterback. They went through a bunch of them after your drew breeze they've gone through a bunch of guys and some have had a little bit of success or some of that limited success nobody's really been consistent. But Schuck he was 27 to 34 to 52 a touchdown he had a touchdown run Saints trail 14 to 3. You just give the ball to Derek Henry and you think it win that game you run it out he goes over 15,000 total yards for his career but.
Yeah that was a surprise the Saints 2024 70 I think there have been a bunch of surprises so far early in this year I agree I didn't I didn't see the Saints. I like going to the guy my Baltimore's going to smoke them but the Saints they were decent and never see the Chris Lava is really good Chris. Yeah Chris is been having a good year so far the NFL is. There really aren't surprises at the NFL that's just the bottom line. I just have to accept it is bizarre the league just bizarre you cannot predict it everybody thought after week one I'm sure by this week we're like oh there's a bunch of after the Thursday night game. They're going to continue score a bunch of right everybody better. I was one and nobody could score any point I was one like it's just you just there is nothing in the NFL can surprise you it is just it's a bizarre league. Well here's a perfect example the Bucket ears at home may field when he has that I I got to chip on my shoulder he usually wins those games and he always has a chip on his shoulder when he plays the Browns and he's the Sean Watson who I may be the only person that thought I still think the Sean Watson maybe can find his game.
I don't like what happened off the field and all the money it's got but they give him the contract. The show Watson was 24 of 30 for 238 and two touchdowns. Yeah played Baker may feel they won in Tampa 23 to 19 who saw that one coming my day was talking about that he's he's the Deshan fans. So he's like I've been telling people Sean's a good quarterback like so I was happy on the Sean was able to go out there and win you know still want to do it again his opportunity at some point. Well the whole thought was this was going to be it look because he would have another bad game they weren't going to play him at home because they don't want to go through the whole situation of the fans. Booing now he goes out plays well you obviously have to start him next week and if it doesn't go well at home it's going to get ugly as soon as he starts playing bad again. Yeah no that's a weird they got a weird situation with because obviously stores fan pay it's been weird it's been where for years with Cleveland I think now with monkey getting a dub all first year head coaches in the NFL have a win except for
Hathley with Miami and I go to him trying to find out what I'm saying that's a dumpster fire out there it is yeah I don't I don't know what they got going like lose Tyree you give I'm rid of what's the other receive a bottle to is not out I don't know I really don't know what Miami's plans are I think Bob Greece he's going to be the starting quarterback he's from the 70s by the way. Tell him the young man about a quarter back from the 70s and they have to play for Miami he's probably better than Malik Wallace. Hey Dow and great stuff as always thank you for coming out here to see us at Colonial Country Club we'll do it again next Monday enjoy your by week. Yes sir.
