We are going to be talking about a challenge they have had and figure out how we as animal lovers and supporters of rescue might be able to offer our support. So that's what we are going to do before we take a short break and come back.

I am your host Marilyn Milano and we are here with the returning guest Jeff Evans, Angels with Miss Place Wings, sanctuary Jeff. Thank you for joining us today. Thank you for having me today and unfortunately not into the circumstances I had hoped, but I'm really excited to be here. Well, absolutely and we want to hear what's going on. So again, for the benefit of people who might not be familiar with with angels with Miss Place Wings, how about just the quick overview of who you are and how does this property that you're on fit into the work of the sanctuary.

3:15Absolutely. So angels with Miss Place Wings is a nonprofit long term and hospice sanctuary for differently abled medically and behaviorally challenged senior animals who need more than just the initial moment of rescue. We say around here rescue is a moment sanctuary is a lifetime. This property that is going to be the focus of our talk today is where that lifetime happens. It's not a facility where you know animals come and go. It's a home for them. And this is where their home will always be. This also is a property that belongs to my father. He's a United States veteran. And so this has an impact what we're going to talk about today has an impact not only on the nonprofit, but potentially on him as well. Well, you know, I was fortunate enough to visit the sanctuary a couple of times where we met some differently abled pets and then eventually you were adding farm animals as well.

4:24And I just wanted to stop for a second and give the website and or Facebook page information if people are listening and would like to learn more. I don't want to forget to do that. So will you just share that with us again. Absolutely. So the website is www.angels with misplaced wings.org and on Facebook, you can just type in that same name and we will pop up. Okay, that sounds fantastic. Well, tell us what has been going on with you. I know this involves repairs to the property and such and some bargains or deals that weren't kept. So I'm going to let you just take us through that because I don't really know the full story. Sure, absolutely. So we moved the sanctuary to this property back in 2021. And when we bought it, it had some, you know, had some deferred maintenance that we knew that we had to take care of.

5:26And so we had reached out locally, seeing who might be interested in helping the nonprofit, whether that was through donations of materials or time, you know, energy effort. And a group called a company named High Performance Homes based out of Vancouver, Washington, which is near where we are, provided us something that was extraordinary. They coordinated projects that provided a new roof, windows, and siding. And it involved multiple companies that coordinated, you know, providing whether the materials, the labor, you know, all the things that are involved in making those happen. So, of course, we were incredibly grateful. This is a huge gift to a really small nonprofit and we really trusted and believed that these companies that were putting their names behind this, we're going to do something that would serve us for a very long time.

6:38The problem is, is now several years later, we've discovered that the installations were not done properly and we've ended up with some leaks in our roof, some damage to our roof. We have the potential for a long term damage to our siding because it was not sealed correctly. And so, you know, we, that's really been the saddest part of this is that we thought that we were working with some companies that really wanted to take a burden off of our plate. And allow for, you know, our small, you know, we don't have huge finances, you know, all of our money really goes to the animals. And so, you know, knowing that we didn't have to come up with that extra money really made a huge difference. So, yeah, that's kind of where this started was a really generous gift that now has become a burden at this point because there are repairs, expensive repairs that need to be done.

7:53So, you know, over time, we've been discovering things that were, you know, specifically discussed and understood that would have been taken care of that were not. You know, we want people to know that, you know, gratitude and accountability can coexist. We can be very grateful for the gift that we received and the generosity behind it. But we also have the right to expect some accountability and not be forced to basically absorb the cost of fixing their mistakes. You know, this is something that I have had experience with myself in a different way because I moved into a home 30 years ago that was built about 12 years before that. And apparently there were like five homes on our property and apparently a lot of stuff was done kind of barely to code and all of the homes wound up with dry rot in some form or another.

8:55But we were way past the point of being able to do anything about it through the builders. We all just have to take care of it ourselves and it was huge. And so, and I've heard about play co and other products that have been used in the Northwest that, you know, don't last here. So, it seems like it's, it's just kind of a problem. But now, so who were there groups that you said high performance homes became involved. So, were they like the organizers of this that someone organizes and then go to other companies and these companies donated stuff, but then when it was put in or done, it was just done improperly. So, high performance homes is essentially a company that, you know, sells roofing, citing. They do windows. I think they also do bathroom remodels. And then, you know, they have specific, you know, they have specific companies that they source from. So they, they're roofing preferences, Owens, Corning, James Hardy, citing,

9:56and then they have subcontractors that they hire to come in and install. So, they also have a distribution company that they work with called ABC supply company, which is a, all of these companies are huge and nationwide. And they all were responsible for donating the materials, you know, the windows, the sighting, the roofing system, and then high performance homes had their installers donate their time to install the products. And so, right, there is a lot of people are involved. And it was not really the scope of how that worked. It was really not explained to us in the beginning. You know, high performance homes made it appear like, you know, they were taking on the bulk of the donations, but really, this, even though their name is on it primarily.

11:02And they got most of the attention for it. They really didn't give a huge chunk of what was given to us, right? They worked with their vendors. And a lot of it was, if you do this for us, you know, we'll use your company more. So, there was a break, everybody was going to benefit out of this project. Yeah. And instead now it sounds like a lot of things weren't applied or installed properly. How long ago was the initial work done? So, the work occurred between 2021 and 2023. And we have, you know, basically, the reason that it has become an issue now is, it wasn't just an issue now. There were things that happened during the process shortly after the process. And, you know, we spent some time trying to figure out how to address all of this. And just really have not gotten anywhere with anyone.

12:09But this year, we had an ongoing issue with having bugs and are addict. And we thought for sure, you know, we basically that we knew when we bought the house that there were some issues with the roof leaking and the roof was really old pieces of it had blown off the house is, you know, 40 over 40 years old. So, we discovered in looking for where the bugs were coming from that one something called bird blocking which prevents bugs from getting inside the addict that had not been those had failed the screens on those had failed. And that is something that we had addressed before the roof even came off as well as dry rot mold. Any of those things that might happen when you have a leaky roof.

13:13And so, you know, we had told high performance homes, when they came out the very first time to talk about the project, these are things that were concerned about and we know that they're going to have to be addressed. So, we want to make sure that when the roofing project is done, that there's no more mold in the attic or, you know, in the in the roof. And if it has spread from the sheeting to other areas, right, that all needs to have be addressed. And we told them we understand that this might be outside the scope of what you're willing to donate. So, what we need to know is how you guys want to handle this. Do we need to hire another contractor to come in and deal with that? Do we, do you just charge us and we'll pay you guys? Or, you know, what are the different options that we have here? And they told us very specifically, no, we're going to address everything that needs to be addressed. We want to make this take the burden off of you, not having to worry about it, not having to pay for it.

14:31So, the money that you guys have can go to the animals. That's what we expected. Right. What we found out and right, and we offered to pay. We offered to pay. Because we were grateful just for the fact that we were getting a new roof. Yes. So, you know, so then as it turns out, as we had somebody come out this year to help us figure out where the bugs were coming from, because we had kind of exhausted all of our other options. And we had really thought, well, the roof had been fixed the way that we asked. So they're not coming from there. And it turns out we had a bug inspector come out and found that the bird block was had not been done. So the screens had failed and the bugs were getting in. And then we also found the mold in the attic. So, right. And then he also found a water leak. So we contacted high performance homes and they came out and they found the source of the leak and repaired it.

15:43And they got together and said, okay, yeah, the mold. So, let's talk about remediation. So, now personally, I had been very clear with them before the roof came off. I don't want mold left, right? I don't want to remediate it. I want it gone. Right. And this is our time to do that. Well, and that is what was agreed upon. To us, we have the right to have what we originally agreed to, which is no mold. But that would involve taking off the whole roof and starting from scratch. And we really at that point didn't want to be, I didn't want to be those people, right. I didn't want to make them do that. And then we said, great, let's, let's talk, let's go ahead and remediate. And they said that they would take care of that. They also informed us that there had been. And just because we have such short time here, I won't go into the details, but they also told us that there were some other issues, installation issues with the roof that had not been done correctly when they installed the roof and they needed to fix those.

17:03And they self admitted that they may also made other errors that they now had to fix in order for the warranty to be good. And I was not thrilled about that because that meant that they had to breach into the roof system. And once you breach a roofing system, it's never the same. Yeah. So anyway, so when they came out to do those repairs, they did them. And I just was, I just had a feeling. So I asked the contractor that was there and like, can you show me what you used to remediate the molds. And he said, sure. And he handed me a can of Rust olium primer. That is not a product that is used in the remediation of mold. You either have to basically clean it with specific chemicals to kill it.

18:03Or there is one product, one painting product that is approved for covering up and killing mold, just one. And it's not Rust olium primer. So essentially in their efforts, they're supposed effort to repair or to remediate the mold, they just use the basic primer. So how I feel about that is they pull the fat, try to pull a fast one on me. Okay. And I mean, here, and because we have limited time, I want to kind of get to the core of what we're talking about here. You got a donation of time and labor to do some things to help the property. And you went into it in good faith. There were things you offered to pay for. And they told no, they were going to be donating these things. And several of the things were not done properly. You found bugs mold. You were told that the mold situation would be fixed. The product used was not one that was even good for that purpose.

19:10And in the meantime, I mean, I'm looking at some notes here. And there were windows where flashing needed to be corrected. There was a problem with citing. So it's one of those things where one criticism you said you've gotten as well, the labor of materials were donated. What did you expect? And yet, if the work that's done is causing more problems than, you know, what was donated, it's as you said, gratitude is there, but accountability. I mean, you can't be living with mold. I mean, you're taking care of animals. Most of the money that is coming in is going for those animals. So at this point, where if we could summarize where things stand right now, because we only have about five minutes left in this conversation, and we can come back from top again too. Yeah, where do things stand now? And what do you want or need to see happen? So where we're right now is kind of at a, we're at a stalemate. So I have reached out with very formal communications to high performance homes.

20:13James Hardy, Owen's Corning, ABC supply, Simonton windows. I have received some communication back. But for the most part, the larger companies have said, you know, we didn't install it. You're on your own. And high performance homes is doing everything that they can to find a solution that is the cheapest possible solution for them. And not necessarily the right solution. And so where we're at is, I keep leaving the door open for them. We have consulted with different legal counsel who are guiding every step. We haven't retained an attorney at this point, but that will be coming soon if we can't get a solution. And the reason we haven't retained one so far is our guidance has been provide every opportunity that you can to find a workable solution.

21:23And so having this conversation with you is kind of one of our last steps in doing that because we've done months and months of emailing and sending letters and really getting no response. So we're hoping that we can share this information with the larger community and have them help us reach out to these companies and ask them to do the right thing. Right. A gift is no longer a gift when it becomes a burden. And it's and what it means, you know, people are like, well, you are a nonprofit. So just spend the money, you know, spend money from what you raise to fix it. Well, that money that we've raised, that would not be a good, would not be good stewardship of that money. That money was meant to help animals. Right. And the donation we received from these companies was to fix up the building. And that was supposed to prevent us from having to spend money there. Right.

22:28So we should not have to spend money to fix their mistakes. No, no, I agree. And I mean, you invited them to actually come and be a part of this interview until their side of the story. So as you said, you are trying to give every chance for these folks to make things right to fix things properly. And so at this point, again, to just kind of pair it down because of the limited time we have what exactly are you asking high performance homes and the companies associated with these products to do right now. I'm asking them to, well, I mean, to be specific, I'm asking the companies involved to honor the gift that they gave us. So at this point, we believe that we need a new roofing system. We need clear answers in regards to the sighting of how we keep the warranties that are in place and repair the issues that were that are wrong with it.

23:35And get all of the things fixed. That's really like that's the shortest version of that that I can do. So we want this made right. And I'm, you know, at this point, I'm not willing to settle for just a band aid, right? I've given them every opportunity to not to do it in a way that was easier. Now I want the right fixes because I feel like, you know, if you are going to take pride and credit in giving a gift, which they all did, right? They were all like, you know, look at us. This is what we're doing. We're helping out. That means you have to stand behind it. Like you can't just walk away when, when you're done and be like, oh well. That doesn't, that doesn't, no, that's like taking food to folks in a shelter. And then the food is rotten and causes people to get sick.

24:37You know, I mean, the idea is good. But I mean, and of course, I'm sure you're still grateful for the original gift, but a gift should not come with more burdens and stress and issues. Then you had to begin with. And it seems like it opened up new things and they're just not responding. And who knows why they're not responding. Maybe they think they don't have to. But again, we just have a short time left. So I would say that let's leave listeners with maybe one or two thoughts in terms of what they might be able to do to help. If they feel like they would just like to help angels with misplaced wings, get this resolved. And so you can go back to your primary purpose, which is helping differently able to animals providing them safety on going care, not just a quick stop. But maybe a lifetime there. What would you like our people that are listening now to do? So what we need from the listeners is for them to reach out to us directly. And and because I'm coordinating a essentially a campaign to have people reach out to these companies and say, hey, we'd love for you to step up and do the right thing.

25:55But we want to do that in a way that still remains respectful. So we ask people to reach out to us through our email, which is ohana at angels with misplaced wings.org. And that'll be attached to all the posts of this interview. They can reach out to us and then reach out to these companies and ask them to do the right thing. That's what we really could use. And of course, we can always use donations to make sure that we can help keep saying yes to the animals that are here and need to come here. Okay, I mean, that's that's totally understandable and that sounds fair. So let's hope that we can get enough folks to understand what this means. It can impact your your father who was a veteran, the owner of this property. We've just people. There's sort of a lack of accountability right now in a lot of ways in our culture. And I don't think that's right. I think we need to do what we say we're going to do and stand behind our products and what we promise.
