Geocache Talk - YOUR COORDINATES ARE MOVING?!?

The United States is preparing to replace the official reference system used for latitude, longitude, and elevation—and some published coordinates could change by as much as four meters! But what does that actually mean for geocachers?

Will your carefully placed cache suddenly have the “wrong” coordinates? Could puzzle finals, property boundaries, benchmarks, and older GPS data be affected? And if nothing on the ground is physically moving, why are the numbers changing?

Join the Geocache Talk Network this Sunday at 7:00 p.m. Central as we separate the science from the sensational headlines and explore one of the biggest changes to America’s coordinate system in decades.

We’ll discuss:

🛰️ Why the United States is retiring its current coordinate reference systems

📍 How coordinates can move even when the location does not

🧭 What a shift of up to four meters could mean for geocaching

📦 Whether existing cache coordinates will need to be updated

🌎 Why satellites are replacing more than a million physical survey markers

🤔 Whether geocachers should be concerned—or whether this is mostly hype

Your cache hasn’t moved…but its coordinates might!
