Missouri with one of its biggest wins and gosh, I don't even know how long you tell me on this live edition of Locked on Mizzou after a huge homecoming victory. You are Locked on Mizzou. Your daily podcast on the Missouri Tigers. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network. Your team every day. All you true sons and daughters. I'm John Miller, your Mizzou Maffio. And the central scrutinizer of Missouri Tigers football and basketball coming to you live here on YouTube after one of the most satisfying Missouri football victories.
I can think of gosh, maybe of the entire 2020s. I mean, how far back do we have to go here? I'll ask you in the audience here. Obviously, I thought Missouri could win this game, but to win it in the fashion that it did incredibly impressive. But I will say, you know, if Florida finishes unranked or you know, at 500 or less, then obviously the game doesn't count. I'm saying that of course, incredibly sarcastically. And one of the big questions I asked entering the game was, could Aaron Filo beat Missouri? Well, it turns out the answer is no. And before I start the show really quick, I just want to tell you today's episode is brought to you by game time, download the game time app, create an account and use code locked on for $20 off your first purchase. And I'll just say this. I thought Missouri let Austin Simmons cook. I thought that was the maybe the biggest difference that I saw in this ball game. I thought coming out of the Mississippi State game.
There were just at times crucial downs where Missouri decided, hey, we're just going to beat you on the chalkboard. We as offensive coordinators coaches, we're going to out, we're going to out coach the other side. To me, my thing was all week, I was saying we need to let Austin Simmons beat the other side. Don't let the coaching staff try to beat the other side. And to me, that's what I saw today. I thought the Missouri coaching staff did exactly what I thought, not that they necessarily listen to the locked on the zoo podcast. No, seriously, I think I think Eli Drake, what has eyeballs in a brain just like I do. And he saw that Austin Simmons is is cooking when you let him cook, let him cook. And I thought Missouri let Austin Simmons cook today to the tune of three hundred and forty yards passing two touchdowns, no interceptions, 23 of 30. I thought Simmons was just tremendous today. Sure, you can say, oh, well, there was one ball that maybe could have been cooked.
And picked off. Listen, is somebody who has watched Patrick Behoem's for the last, what, eight, nine years, whatever it's bad. He throws some that are interceptable sometimes too. It turns out when you've got a rocket for an arm attached to your left shoulder, well, it makes a little, a little harder to intercept the ball than when John Miller is throwing you wounded ducks from 20 yards away. It's a little bit harder to catch that ball when Austin Simmons is throwing you laser beams. And I will just say another thing I talked about coming into the game could Aaron Fylo beat Missouri. Listen, obviously, Jaden ball, twelve carries for thirteen yards in the ball game against Missouri. What can you say, Corey Batoon, the Missouri defense, how could you have done any better? Quite honestly. Considering on the other side, well, Aaron Fylo with 197 yards passing. So so you're telling me Florida had fewer than 200 yards passing.
They didn't even get 20 yards rushing with Jaden ball. Just an incredible, incredible effort by the Missouri defense, which I talked to a lot of Florida podcasts heading into the week. I was telling them, listen, I think Missouri is going to be in the gaps. I think they're going to be there to make the play. The question is, will they make the play? The Tigers, one of the worst percentage tackling teams entering this ball game. Missouri tackled incredibly well in this game. I don't know what the difference was. But I'm just telling you, I feel like Missouri has been in position more often than not in a straight straight up type running game. I feel like this is a type of matchup that favored Missouri as well. It's a little bit different when you're going against the sort of super spread up tempo, you know, hand off deep shot type of offense that Mississippi state, sort of the Josh Heipel-esque offense is what I would describe it asked. I thought Missouri matches up much more well with a relatively conventional offense that
is Buster Faulkner and John Summeral and the Florida Gators. And despite all of this, despite that I didn't hate the matchup for Missouri, my God, this is a real reality check for the Gators, isn't it? It has to be considered a reality check because as good as this Missouri team can be, well, everybody was just, you know, saying, hey, this is America's team now, right? Maybe Missouri is America's team next week, but I was sort of joking around by how the nation loved Mississippi state last week. Well, I loved Florida this week, just an all time great batting moment. Hey, I didn't pick the Missouri to win, but I did take him to cover. So give me a little bit of credit there. But then the question is, is how good is this Missouri team? Because it felt like so far through the first four weeks of the season to me that Missouri was, well, kind of in the middle of the power five of the SEC, just kind of a middling team. But what if, like I said, going into this game this entire week, I was saying, well, what
is Missouri's, what is Missouri's upside? To me, it's letting Austin Simmons make the decisions. Forget about letting Chip Lindsay and Eli Drankwoods decide where the ball is pre determined to go on third down and five, that type of thing. No, let Austin Simmons scan the field and let him decide where the football is going to go. That's exactly what I saw today. So applause to Eli Drankwoods and the staff and everyone. And I will say I saw some of Eli Drankwoods post game comments. Oh my God, the defiant energy from Eli Drankwoods. Oh God, just feed it. Just pump it directly into my veins. Genuinely, I loved it because anytime there was somebody who was asking him a question about, you know, sort of the broader narrative. Hey, you'll finally be the team that blip blip blip blip blip blip blip blip blip blip blip blip blip blip. And he was like, yeah, I don't want to hear it. I just want to talk about this week. And again, that's the thing for Missouri. It's not about, oh, well, here, let's compare what we did to 2022.
Who gives a flying F? I couldn't agree with with Drankwoods attitude more there. It's all about, hey, what have you done for me lately? Well lately, Missouri's four and one. We're one and one in the SEC. We were staring O and two in the face in the southeastern conference. Maybe the hottest team in the league. Certainly the most, again, America's team, the Florida Gators this week. And Missouri did not only win the ball game, they dog walked Florida's butt. I mean, they really did. And now we're two games ahead of Florida all time. You know, that's got a stick in there. Come on, right? It's a lot of basketball national champion Florida Gators with the old ball coach and urban Meyer and Tim Tibo and all this stuff. And yet those Missouri Tigers, well, it turns out we have a winning record against Florida. And by a couple of games now, too. So yeah, go ahead and taste on that for a few years. That would be my advice to you.
And of course, just incredible run defense by the Missouri Tigers again, tackling, knowing your assignments, discipline, the entire thing. I just thought an absolute A plus all around for the Missouri defense and especially the Missouri rushing attack. You know what coming up in this program, I'm going to talk more about this ball game, including, you know what, if Florida finished on ranked, I mean, this game doesn't count. What are we talking about here? But you know, before we get there, I'm going to tell you about the fan duel because welcome to your most rewarding NFL season ever, ladies and gentlemen, only on fan duel. How rewarding are we talking? How rewarding are we talking? Well, the more rewarding than a touchdown with time or expiring, more rewarding than an 18 point comeback, maybe even more rewarding than an offensive lineman catching a touchdown. I mean, let's not go that far. But this season, fan duel is making the excitement go beyond what happens on the field
with the all new fan duel rewards club featuring exclusive offers surprises and more every week. Check out the fan duel app and see what's waiting for you. For example, the NFL gives you something new to watch every week and now fan duel is giving fans something to check new every single week. The rewards club has exclusive offers and surprises. It's worth opening the app to see what is waiting. Make this your most rewarding season ever with fan duel. Visit fandual.com to get started. Call us footballers back. So Hilton called me the superstition concierge to make your fan rituals a reality. Need a room to match your lucky number? We got you. Want to make sure our team doesn't wash your lucky jersey? Oh, that smells lucky. Hilton's unmatched hospitality can keep up with any superstition. Even a marching bandwink up call it 555 and 55 seconds.
Hit it! When you need a team that will do whatever it takes on game day, it matters where you stay. Hilton, for this day. Oh, folks, is this not a great moment in Missouri football history? I mean, truly, tell me what has been a better victory in the last, I don't know, in the 2020s. Has there been a better victory? I mean, you got to go back to when Missouri was clenching SEC East victories to have to me a more satisfying victory than what you had, especially specifically at Ferro Field today. Maybe go back to 2023 against Tennessee. I think this Florida team is probably a little bit better than that, but I don't know. Maybe my memory is a little bit faulty. Certainly, wouldn't be the first time that that has happened. And I will say this, I think this is starting to become a DeMarian folks podcast, by the way, a really nice 18 yard return by folks in traffic at one point.
Not only is DeMarian folks an explosive punt returner, he's a really smart one. To me, I think every time, maybe with one exception this season, I think every single time he's made the fair catch versus I'm going to run it back decision. I think I've agreed with DeMarian every time and his love for not only being a return man, but a gunner on the punt coverage team as well. A guy's a former four star wide receiver. A guy who's contributed in the receiving game. Gosh, what an explosive smart player DeMarian folks is. I think he might be my favorite team, my favorite player of the team right now. I really love me, some DeMarian folks. Of course, I love Austin Simmons as well. And there was of course that the biggest maybe touchdown of the game that opened up the game for the Tigers. The the the seam ball to an open Donovan, a Lou Bade. You know, it felt like almost everybody, including the Missouri offense, including the Florida
defense, including Austin, Simmons felt like almost everyone was surprised by that snap, except Donovan, a Lou Bade, just was like, Oh, here we go. And he ran his route, got wide open. Simmons gets in the ball and breaks a tackle by the way, out about the 10 yard line to get it all the way into the end zone. And my goodness, that was kind of the play of the game right there. And it just felt like once Florida got behind once Florida had to say, Wait, we're down multiple possessions here. Maybe we have to chase the game a little bit. Maybe we can't just hand it off and run play action whenever we want that completely change the ball game. And although if you listen to me before the game, I said, Hey, if Missouri scores a touchdown on its first scripted drive, I think the Tigers will win. Well, obviously that didn't happen. Missouri got three points, I believe, on its first drive. It was, let's see, it was three three at the end of the first quarter, right? But obviously it didn't play out exactly how I wanted it to.
But my overall point there, I think, was ultimately strong, which was if Missouri is hanging in there, if Missouri can get an early lead, and especially obviously Missouri eventually gets a two possession lead, importantly, well, suddenly the Florida offense looked a lot different, didn't it? When suddenly standard downs become passing downs, well, looked a lot more difficult for the Florida Gators did it not. So that is my overall point there for all of you. And I got to say, you know, it can't just one of the most outstanding and exciting ball games. One of the most satisfying ball games I've seen in recent Missouri history without question. And you know what, let's take some, let's take some comments here. You know what, we are live here on YouTube with let's see what's happening here. Let's see if, let's see. Oh, well, one person to me, what a shame you did not pick them. I definitely did. Hey, I picked them to cover the spread. So guess what?
You made money if you followed locked on Missouri podcasts. Just joined. Have you apologized for picking Florida yet? Actually yes, I did. I, I didn't, did I apologize? I mean, I admit it, I was wrong. I also picked Missouri to cover, but I'm sorry. Did you pick Missouri to win 45 to 17 or is it important for you to dunk on me or can we just enjoy a homecoming victory just out of curiosity? Think of the pool money that transferred to Mizzou betting fans. I'm not a bet kind of guy. I really wish we were not talking about how Missouri didn't get into the CFP because of the Mississippi game. Well, here's the thing. The Mississippi State game. Hey, I think Mississippi states a really good team. I do. I think they're a solid team. I think they're about in the same, the same tears Missouri and Florida right now. I really do. But man, Alabama showed him who was boss today. The Crimson Tide. They might be back.
That Crimson Tide offense in particular. The defense, I, you know, it's not, it's certainly not the Nick Saban type of defense that we're used to. I think that's kind of a maybe middle of the pack type of defense in the SEC for the tide. With that offense, Keelan Russell. Whoo. Alabama looking pretty impressive right now. Austin Simmons was dealing and Corey Baton was dialing it up. Hey, couldn't agree more with that. Becky says, not one that I could remember since before the SEC East wins. That's my feeling as well. I haven't done my full research yet or anything, but I have to go back to, hey, Missouri clenching the SEC East over Arkansas in 2014, A&M in 2013. Is there anybody more satisfying Missouri victory in particular at Ferrofield since this one? Uh, that's good stuff. And this person who says I want a full apology. Well, I guess what, bud? You're getting actually deleted. You're going to be blocked from the channel now.
How about you F off here? Here's an idea. Maybe there's an idea there. Another person says that Mizzou Front kicked ASS today and the lack of penalties was huge. What a great point there by Roger, just in general, a total lack of penalties on both sides of the ball. My Missouri, the offensive side of the ball, hey, those those rushing offensive holdings that were huge and down in Starkville disappeared. All of the pre snap stuff, the false starts, illegal motion, whatever it might be. I don't think Missouri had a single false start today. Maybe they had one correct me if I'm wrong. I don't remember a single false start today. So it just felt like Missouri looked like a team that was incredibly well coached today. They looked like a team that had a great week of practice today and they followed through and wanted. I thought it was really impressive stuff. And that was a team that, you know, a week or two ago, I can't necessarily say that Missouri looked like a well coached team.
Hopefully as the calendar turns to October here, maybe Missouri is, you know, maybe, maybe a better tackling team, a better team before the snap, all of that good stuff. With that front looking like it did, can we hang close with Georgia because this offense, we might be able to have a chance if we can hang. Well, here's the thing. I mean, the Georgia, the Georgia game down in Athens, you know, I think the Bulldogs look like the best team in the conference right now if not the entire country. So I'm going to stick with that for sure. But, you know, I think Texas, no, who I believe is ranked ahead of Georgia right now in the AP poll, for example, I believe Texas is the number one team in the country versus Georgia's number two, the Longhorns at Faroe Field versus an archmaning that is a little bit shaky on the road to say the least and doesn't necessarily like pressure.
Can we get Langdon and Daris back by then? To me, the Longhorns are at least a little bit vulnerable there, but you know what, we're going to talk more about this ball game coming up here on the show here in just a little bit. But you know what, first before we get continue on this live additional lockdown, the college football is full of games you plan for all year. You know, sometimes the best memories are from the games that you almost missed. That's where game time comes in, whether it's a rivalry game, a matchup featuring a player you must see in person or an underdog like Missouri against Florida today, right? It makes a noise. Well, game time makes it very simple to get in the game. Think about the game on the schedule. The absolutely do not want to miss. Well, here's the thing with game time. So Hilton called to me the superstition concierge to make your fan rituals a reality. Need a room to match your lucky number? We got you. Want to make sure our team doesn't wash your lucky jersey? Oh, that smells lucky. Hilton's unmatched hospitality can keep up with any superstition. Even a marching bandwink up call it $55.55. Hit it! When you need a team that will do whatever it takes on game day, it matters where you stay. Hilton, for this day. All right. More of your annoying comments. Hi, John Miller says Parker. Hey, Parker, how you doing? I appreciate that particular simple comment.
Another says I said, drink should know to defend against the offense because their offense was similar to ours last year. You know what? I think there's some real truth there. I think there is a lot of similarities between this Florida buster, Faulkner offense and Missouri's offense, which relies on pre-snap motion and shifting and all this kind of stuff. I think there's a lot of truth in that. Of course, Florida will go under center and under the unlike Camario Taylor and Mississippi. Stay it was basically like, hey, we're going to hurry up. We're going to do the base of their offense anyway was handoffs and deep shots. That's not exactly what Florida was doing. And to me, all week, I thought, you know, this Missouri defense, this Corey Baton defense, I think it matches up better with this buster Faulkner, this buster Faulkner, sort of more under center offense than it does against the Camario Taylor Mississippi state thing.
And as I said, coming to this week, you know, these are very different teams, which is in terms of levels. I think Mississippi state and Florida are a lot more similar than I think maybe people realize. And like I said, I think maybe Missouri is right there in this tier with Mississippi state and Florida. Hey, you play against Mississippi state, you know, 10 times you play against Florida, 10 times are going to get different results. I think these teams are fairly similar. Fortunately for Missouri on an absolutely glorious football, a Saturday in Columbia, Missouri, Tigers just played tremendously well again, clean football, really good football athletically as well again, you know, obviously, hey, not only Austin Simmons, you know, executing everything. First half the running game couldn't quite get going. And just as we were saying, oh, this running game to get a little pedestrian, right? Well, Jamal Roberts breaks one for 75. Then he breaks another one for 80, that type of deal.
Just, you know, tremendous stuff from the Missouri running game as well. So somebody, so Gator fan is here. Gators, just not good at all. You all still got walked by state. Oh, congratulations, Gator fan. Does that make you feel better that Missouri is also one in one? Oh, good for you, buddy. I'm so glad that you jumped into my comments for that one. Congratulations. Truly. I'm so happy for you. Oh, my God. I love you. All your Florida fans who are trying to cope right now. Please, please give me all of it. I will taste all of it. Please give me all of your tears. Oh, oh, they're so tasty. I love them so much. Truly. Becky also says, how about Simmons on a big stage and looked like he was not bothered by it? That a good sign. Becky, you're darn right. It's a good sign. And I think the more experienced Austin Simmons gets, the better he's going to get because he's a guy in his little experience.
To me, the better, the highest, the best use of Missouri so far has been give him the ball. Let him scan the field and choose where the ball goes. And if that's our first option, and then the counter is, oh, handing it to Jamal Roberts, even if even if it all had already doesn't come back, God bless them all had already. I hope he comes back. But even if he doesn't, unlike last season, the running game's not the number one option now. This is now a passing team. This is Austin Simmons team. We're putting the team offensively on his left arm. That's where this team is going. We're going to we're going to live or die with Austin Simmons. That was what I was saying that Missouri should do all week. I think that's exactly where the Tigers landed in this ball game. And boy, the results were pretty good. So let's keep plowing forward with this Mizzou football team. I was not feeling incredibly confident entering the game, but hey, who cares what I think now?
Not think we're looking like like we're a borderline, you know, let's say we're a second tier team. We may not be Alabama. We not be Georgia, but other than that, we're not maybe we maybe we aren't even Texas either. But like I said earlier, I think Missouri is a real live underdog against Texas here in November. But that's a long way away. Got Texas A&M next week. A ton of important SEC ball games coming up. Hey, that's the thing about the southeastern conference as as Florida, maybe partially just learned this week. There are no off weeks in this conference anymore. The talent is more evenly distributed and more competitive than it's ever been. So hey, hold on your butts. This is going to be a wild SEC season. And hey, no matter what happens, I'm going to be. I'm going to be here here for you. I'm going to be here for you on the Lockdown, Mizzou podcast to preview it, recap it, everything in between.
