And there's a weird recruiting trend going on in college basketball. You are Locked on J-Hawks. Your daily podcast on the Kansas J-Hawks. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network. Your team every day. What's up, Derek Johnson here. This is Locked on J-Hawks. We're going to get into some of the latest news, including updates on KU Soccer and their recent win. We're going to get to a really weird recruiting trend in college basketball that could have effects on some of the schools like Kansas. And we'll start with Tre White.
What's going on? What's the hold up? Is he going to join the J-Hawks? We'll try to answer some of those questions. Today's episode's brought to you by Fandall. It is time to put your knowledge to the test with college football pick-um from Fandall. Download the Fandall app and play college football pick-um for free only on Fandall. So Tre White becomes eligible with the Indiana case in Monroe. But the NCAA has filed an emergency motion to stay the injunction. They're trying to get it within 24 hours. The student athletes are trying to get that delayed a little bit more. That's not one that I'd be worried about because that's basically just a... It's almost like an appeal from the same exact court. Is that same judge? Is that same court going to see things differently all of a sudden two days later? Probably not. The more one to watch would be after that stuff all goes through, do they take it to an appellate court? And if so, do they have success there?
Because they've had successes in other states. But again, as we talked about the other day, there's some new stuff that has come out that might make it a little more difficult for them in some of the appeal courts. But nonetheless, right now Tre White is eligible. We heard a quote from Bill Salfe and talking about Tre and stuff like that. But what's the hold up here? You're seeing some of these other players who are eligible and you've already seen announcements of, okay, they're going to this school or they're coming back to this school or the return or whatever. So what is the hold up for Tre White? Why is this taking so long for KU? Mike Vernon, for instance, thinks it's positive that it's headed in the right direction for KU, that they are, I guess you could say, like on a collision course that things are going to get done. It just is a little bit weird how quiet it's been. And it's been quiet on the Tre White front in general. The Melvin Council front has been a little more, it's felt like there's been a bit more of an open door to getting into that situation.
Is there any chance in the world that Tre White is entertaining? I don't know what other offers are out there or that Tre White is using this as leverage to try to get a more guaranteed deal out of the Miami Heat, you know? I guess those things are possible. In regards to like the leverage out of the Miami Heat, I probably wouldn't expect that because it's like, is that really worth paying lower fees for being in this case to the potential? I don't know, whatever. So I do think it seems like there's a positive notion that Kansas is going to be able to get this done. Something else that I did find interesting about this that was pointed out by Mike Vernon was that apparently Tre White and Melvin Council have the same agent. If that is true, is there any chance in the world that if you were the agent of Tre White, you're telling them, wait, hold on here. Don't actually like, you know, don't sign yet, don't commit yet because in a world
where you and Melvin Council go both get eligible, like we know this is what we have to work with money wise. Like let's say Kansas has, again, this is just throwing out a random number. This might be true, might be not, I don't know. Let's say Kansas has two and a half million dollars sitting around available to bring in whatever remains there are on the final two spots of the roster. And if you're the agent here, you're going, hey, if Tre White and Melvin Council both get eligible, they're both going to just split that. They're both going to get 1.25 million to go back to KU. It's more than they would make in the NBA this upcoming season. Great, works out for everybody. But if you're the agent and you're sitting there going, yeah, but I don't know if Melvin Council is going to get eligible. And if you don't know if he's going to get eligible and then let's say it gets to a point where he's not eligible, he doesn't win his case in court, then all of a sudden if you're the agent, you can go listen. We were cool splitting it to be Melvin and Tre, but now that we know that Melvin's not coming aboard, you know, and it's just Tre White, he wants a little more cut of that. He wants 2 million, he wants 1.5.
Could that be a reason for waiting? I don't know. I'm just kind of at this point, just kind of spitballing different things. Could it be Kansas being, I don't know, indecisive, so to speak about what they want to do in terms of, you know, like Malik Renau, for instance, was somebody who it was, it was listed in the court case that the University of Kansas was a team that had showed interest there. He has since announced that he'll be returning to Miami. So that one is no longer an option here, but just in general with that path, if you're looking at like the manual like Bollet Path or some of these other players who have become eligible, who are looking for homes, is there any way in the world that Kansas is kicking the tires there to see what is possible, what can fit into their budget, what can they get done? Or are they just in a point where they're going, hey, we have to wait on the Melvin Council thing, because if Council and White are both eligible, we feel indebted a bit of loyalty to bring both of them back
and not get somebody else, right? I don't know, there's a lot here that you could point to that you could pick and choose your kind of different theory of why this feels like it's being slow played, which is weird because this isn't one of those situations where it's like, like when Tyron Stokes was going through the commitment process and eventually picked KU, that felt like one of those situations where it was like, okay, you know, any day now it could happen any day now, when is he going to commit, but there wasn't really like a hard deadline. I guess they're starting to become a bit of a, you know, these teams need to figure out what's going on here to plan out the rest of their off season, but at the end of the day, whether Tyron Stokes committed then or a week later or a week before, it wasn't like a huge difference. This does have a huge difference because of the deadlines that are upcoming here, right? I mean, theoretically, we've already passed the late enrollment deadline, which, I don't know, again, it can just retroactively apply for some of those.
Is there some sort of workaround that we're just not knowledgeable about? Either of those things is entirely possible, but the further you get away from that date, I feel like the less options that you would have, you know, it just feels like you're running against it. And then too, apparently like the training camps start up for the NBA teams like next week. So you're running against that too, where players have to decide, Hey, like, am I going back to college? Am I going to be in the G league? Am I going to compete in this training camp with this team? I would imagine you have to actually sign because that's another big part of this as well. Like Trey White never actually, same with Melvin Council, never actually signed the contract with the exhibit 10 contract or whatever with the heat or, you know, with the pelicans. Um, they just played in summer league, but they never actually signed the contract. They agreed with the deal. They never actually signed it. So they're able to be eligible because of that. But I would imagine if you're going to be actually participating in the team's training camp coming up next week,
you probably do have to actually sign on the dotted line to be able to do that. So you're running out of time on all fronts here. And I guess the point being of saying that is that it feels like it's being slow played. I'd imagine this is one of those duck on a pond situations where it's like the duck above the pond. Looks like he's just floating along like, you know, no worries in the world. But if you look underneath the pond, those legs are paddling, man. Those legs are paddling. They're trying to figure out what's going on. Um, and there's a lot of people trying to work hard and get this done. I mean, and to that notion of the, you know, needing to know an answer on this, like, we'd have to know an answer on these things by the end of the weekend, right? I mean, the Melbourne Council one is a bit out of his hands because it's up to the court in deciding what's going to go on there. But at least with the trade white one, now that we have some clarity, you would think that is one where some sort of announcement of, oh, I'm going back to college. Oh, I'm picking this school.
Oh, I'm coming back to KU. That would have to happen by the end of this weekend. So again, based on some of those reports and stuff, it does sound like it is trending in the right direction for KU. And trade white, but based on how this whole thing has been such a funky process and up and down and through the legal process, I think everybody's at a point where they, they're not holding their breath and they just want to, they just want to get that official announcement to where they can exhale that something because again, this is a big deal. Like, this is the difference between, look at Bartolomek kids is being number 11 and number seven, you know, it's a 3C versus 2C, which doesn't sound like a big difference, but kind of is, right? I mean, Shudi Hoops has it as the difference between being number 12 team in the country and number two. Like, that's the difference between top tier national title contender and second or third tier national title contender. I mean, if he gave me a cow, I would have him bumped up into, I don't know, like the top 15 or something like that. John Rossine would probably still have him like 26 or something like that.
But yeah, this is a big deal. So we'll see what happens. I'm hopeful that it'll work out. The council one, no idea what's going to go down there, but it does feel like Kate, who's going to fill both? I don't know. Even saying that, I'm like, that feels like a bold statement to say, but it feels like they have enough options to be able to do just that. All right, let's get on to what I think is kind of a weird, interesting shift in the recruiting world of college basketball. And I'm going to explain that next. This is locked on Jay hox. So today's brought to you by Fandall sports, but college football fans, it is time to put your knowledge to the test with college football pick them from Fandall. I can speak to that for some of the big games this week that I've been using. I'm kind of in on USC, maybe pulling an upset over organ. They've got some boost up there for some of the other big games as well or some different parlay boost up there. Download the Fandall app and play college football pick them for free. So there's an interesting recruiting shift going on in the world of college basketball. And I do think this has an impact on the University of Kansas as well as many other schools. I'll get into what it is in a second, but real quick, I think the reason why this is happening, it is about the five and five. I think that's a big part of it to where you're seeing teams avoiding high school kids. If they're not like sure things, they'd rather use those spots on transfers or retaining players who now will have an extra year. I think it probably also speaks to the class of 2027, not having the most sterling reputation that maybe it's not the best, you know, recruiting class that's been out there. Maybe this is about the transfer portal to where not just about team saying, hey, we'd rather go out and get transfer portal players. But from a incoming freshmen's perspective, if you're a class of 2027 recruit, would you rather take a two year contract to go to a power for school, where you can get a decent amount of payday and try to work your way up the ladder by year to
or would you rather go to a smaller school, get playing time as a freshman ball out and hope that it leads to an even bigger payday in the transfer portal out next year. And because here is what is happening right now, we are seeing a lot of kids who are even forced our recruits who are top 150 recruits in the country picking non power for schools more than ever before. Maybe I shouldn't say ever before because I didn't look at like every recruiting class ever, but certainly the most that I've seen in a while and this is becoming a real trend. It feels like every other day I'm looking up and there's a new like four star recruit that commits to a non power for school, right. And what's interesting to me is, you know, in a lot of past years, if you were the recruit, you know, five, 10 years ago, if you were a recruit number 83 in the 24, seven top 100. There's a good chance that you know, maybe you go to, I don't know, a power for school where you're their number one or number two recruit right or maybe you go to a university of Kansas where you're like the third best recruit in that class right like that's something that we were used to seeing.
But here are some of the schools that have commits from players ranked between 80th and 150th so top 150 recruits in the class of 2027. UNLV Florida Atlantic, St. Mary's, Oregon State, South Florida, St. Joseph's, New Mexico, Tennessee Tech, Jacksonville, Marie State, St. Louis, St. Bonna venture, Colorado State, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Baptist and Marimack. Those are not typically like, okay, sure, maybe you see St. Mary's up there for like one a year, New Mexico, every so often, St. Louis has a good NAL budget, like some of those makes sense, but it's like You know, he makes that but like When you put them all in tandem and that is a lot of different like, Shoot, I can't remember number top 150 recruit going to like Marimack or Cal Baptist, you know, and so if you total it up Top 150 recruits right now on 24 seven sports
18 players are committed in the top 150 to non-power five schools. I'm calling the power five the power four in football. So you have big 10 SEC ACC Big 12 plus the big east for basketball. I'm not including the pack 12 so of those five conferences if you take those out 18 players are committed to some of these other conferences. And the thing is only 75 players right now in the top 150 are even committed. So if the trend just continues if you just double that number that would put this on pace to be well over 30 kids Who are in the top 150 right now wind up going to you know, basically group of five schools It would be another way of putting our mid majors would be another way of putting it right anyway I'd be thinking like how does that compare to other years is that just a you know, is that normal? So to show you how unorthodox this is I went back 10 years ago. Look did the class of 2017
There were a total of 10 players in the top 150 who picked a non-power school And that was by the end of it where all of them were committed again There's already 18 committed right now more than that and only half of the kids have committed Okay, what if I go back five years ago and look at the class of 2022 There were a total of 12 players in the top 150 on 24 seven sports who picked a non-power school But even then you're getting some of those kids going to like Houston or Cincinnati Who at that point in time or in the American and will end up joining the big 12 a year later So it's 12 with an asterisk again There's already 18 this year and it's with only half the kids committed If I even go back just two years ago to the class of 2025 It was only 14 players in the top 150 picked a non-power school And that even includes like Gonzaga and San Diego State where they're grabbing two or three of those So again, you already have more commits to non-power schools
In this class of 27 then you had in all of 2025 and only half the top 150 are committed Now if we go back to last year's class the class of 2026 you see the numbers start to rise It was 21 players of the top 150 wound up committing to non-power for Plus big or to power for plus Sorry, non-power for plus big schools, right? She have 21 But with already 18 was still 75 kids to go it feels like this year is going to blow that number out of the water And so I think it is a trend. I think it's definitely like I said earlier I think this could come down to you know some of these schools like you look at Kansas If they're able to break like You brought in Dennis Parker and Keanu Dawes in the transfer portal thinking they would be one year guys And then the five and five past and now you know you can get them back multiple years so like A lot of these schools know that now they can have another year of some of these players. They're not As eager to fill some of those roster spots But it also is probably about you know
The kid wanting the opportunity to maybe play right away and then or in the payday as opposed to mean on a two or three year contract At their school and maybe getting paid less to you don't have to fight your way up there It probably also does have to do with with the class of 2027 maybe not being as good as for instance the class of of 2025 right There's probably a lot that goes into that but I think it becomes pertinent for a school like Kansas who we just saw this past class right Like Kansas had tyron soaks and the number one of crew and then you have Davy on adkins who you know before you kind of suffered The injury he was seen as I don't know like top 30 top 40 recruit in the country falls a little bit because of the injury He had during his senior year of high school But you know when you look at Trent Perry and Luke Barnett those are more Filler players in your colat class players that you would hope can develop into something or can surprise you Which it sounds like Luke Barnett is on that path sounds like he's you know worked his way in that he might even be a rotation guy this year that he has certainly been a positive
I don't know riser during the offseason for k you and that's kind of the idea there that they can either be you know a positive surprise Down the road role players for you developmental players or at the very least players that can cheaply fill out your roster that are gonna be cheaper than going out in the transfer portal And bringing on a veteran to be your ninth man who's gonna want more money in one a bigger role than you have the opportunity to do But if more and more of these kids are going to these non-power five schools It's gonna be slim pickings and then you might end up in a bidding war where you do have to pay more Then maybe you did to bring in a Luke Barnett or a Trent Perry now Maybe that's just to to each his own and there's still going to be some kids who would prefer to go that route and other kids Who would prefer to go the other route but I do find this interesting because it feels like that was a I don't know almost strategic play from k you to fill out the roster that way And is that option going to be going away if this other trend continues then again
If this is the last year of bill self and it you know He's not gonna have to worry about recruiting in the future then you know, it's it's a different world anyway So I don't know just kind of an interesting trend. I've been noticing in the recruiting world Let's finish up with some of the latest news. This is locked on jhawks All right, so today's brought to you by Odo running a business shouldn't feel like you're trying to connect a bunch of systems That were never designed to work together. He was able to sacrifice there and it was so smoothly implemented he ended up having a great career Receiver putting up some gnarly stats. Thanks you ever join us here on locked on jhawks. Let's finish up with some of the latest news Didn't get a chance to touch on this the other day, but KU officially got the late game for the champions classic They'll be taking on Kentucky So uh eat 30 central time is the scheduled tip usually the first game goes a little bit long. So You know by the time that one gets going and then we got to watch the what the calls for ball playoff rankings where They're just talking about the SEC all day I don't know probably nine o'clock or something. So late game for KU in the champions classic I mean while for KU volleyball this weekend They're going to be dedicating Horish family volleyball arena court in honor of rabishard the legendary KU volleyball coach that'll be happening prior friday's match against Houston in the big 12 opener for KU very well deserved um I don't know man. I Getting to be around coach for those that don't know I got to Very very lucky very very fortunate
Be the broadcaster for KU volleyball that's a travel with the team and stuff in 20 Or it had been 2015-2016 they made the final four one year One of the 12 championship the next year and so uh, I got to spend a good amount of time around rabishard and um just first-class person um Very caring person for other Others and obviously very successful at KU as well and uh, I'm very thankful to KU volleyball and rabishard for I guess I don't know helping start my broadcast career in a way um, so very cool to see that in a real way semi-annickals by the way a little bit of news for KU woman's basketball and semi-annickals Does have another year for her her fifth year, but uh, she Apparently her eyes are on the WNBA to where um, this is probably gonna be her last year So don't count on that getting that extra year for her and KU just adding to the idea that there needs to be hasted for uh, brand-new Schneider and company to capitalize on another year of semi-annickals
Uh chase belcher by the way, that's an interesting name. Here's why mentioned the other day that I couldn't find any running backs in the court case in indiana That was not true chase belcher is actually an available running back in the indiana court case and Who knows if KU will have interest or not? He's a running back from kena sa state who gets another year here Because of the the same court case that gets trey white eligible Hit 566 russian yards last year for kena sa 5.3 yards per carry two touchdowns I mean KU's beat up at the running back spot, right? Like get this guy in the building get this guy in the program if you can and then Last bit of news here KU soccer Has their uh big 12 home opener they took down a Arizona state two nil They are now one win one draw in big 12 play seven two and one overall on the season and next up on sunday at one o'clock They'll be hosting arizona out at rock chalk park All right, that'll do it for this episode of locked on jhok so you can find her show anywhere you get your podcast including on our youtube page
