He's officially back to the Kansas J-Hawks. You are locked on J-Hawks. You're daily podcast on the Kansas J-Hawks. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. What's going on, Derek Johnson here. This is Locked On J-Hawks and Trey White is officially back with the Kansas J-Hawks. We're going to break it all down. The news, will he stay eligible? We get to our just reminder scouting report, even though he's a returning player. Just remind everything that went on. We'll finish up a little bit of interest with a reported KU interest in Trey Kaufman Ren. They double down on the Trey's year. Let's start here though. Trey White is officially back for Kansas.
We learned a couple days ago. He was part of this suit in Monroe County in Indiana that 90 players won eligibility to gain another year against the NCAA. There are some updates to what's going on in that court process that we'll get to here in a second. While we await, I guess, is he going to stay eligible or not while he is eligible right now? He is officially back with the Kansas J-Hawks, committing to return to the team. Bill Self shared this on the KU social media Twitter account. Trey received a TRO and is eligible to come to campus and practice and hopefully play in games. The part hopefully playing games kind of illustrates the will he stay eligible. He said he's had a great offseason and performed well with the heat and had a very successful summer league. When the opportunity presented itself to go back to college, he wanted to come back to KU and we welcomed that. He pursued this on his own, which shows he wants to be here. You're talking about a guy that averaged 14 points and seven rebounds last year in a really
good league. He brings experience, but also brings talent, leadership, depth, and competition in practice every day. I think what that's kind of alluding to is the idea that what if he doesn't get eligible what the very least he's going to bring some of those things to the team in practice every day. Ideally he is playing games because it is a complete game changer for what he brings to the table for KU, but that's kind of the big question here. We'll he stay eligible. Basically, this court case, the NCAA wanted a filing and they wanted to expedite the process and kind of appeal to the same court. That's happening. The NCAA has also taken its fight against Monroe County, I guess you could say to the court of appeals. That's the one that becomes interesting because we've seen in some of these other states when the NCAA has gone to the court of appeals is where they've been able to win some of these and make players who were at this stage of the process where Tray White is eligible,
make some of those guys ineligible. We saw that in Ohio where originally they got their TRO but then in the appeals court with the NCAA, they became ineligible. I think it was Georgia where we saw that. I once said Tennessee, we saw it. It's like a handful of states where we've seen it go to the appellate court level and eventually then be deemed ineligible. Now it's deemed ineligible in that way from the standpoint of how do I say this? I guess it's deemed ineligible in a way of waiting for the court case to actually happen now, but they lose their TRO. It's ineligible with the chance to get back eligible again, but that lack of eligibility until the court case happens is enough to make you miss games or maybe even the season. That's kind of the big question here. You take the risk. It's worth the swing because Tray White is the potential of a player that would change things from you being a decent team, you being a solid team and one that can legitimately
make a final four win a national title. That's why this is huge. Legitimately, you look at Bart Torfick, Kansas goes from 11th to 7th, which doesn't sound like a huge difference and maybe it's not, but I don't know. Every little bit counts. The big one for me, Shudihubes, KU goes up from 12th to 2nd in the country. That is the gigantic number. I think Evan Miyakawa, they go from 20th to around the top 10. This is a real jump for KU. You can never have enough good wings. You can never have enough good shooters. You can never have enough good rebounders. Bill Self does his best with returning talent. You're checking all these boxes on what he can be. Does it complicate the rotation and who's going to start? But like, competition is a good thing. Those are good things for KU. Again, the two big questions here. It's just the eligibility. Will he stay eligible? How is he going to fit with the team? You're joining late. You're joining after bootcamp. Is he going to have to go through bootcamp by himself to fit in in that way?
Is it because he was with the Miami Heat? Everybody's going to be okay with it in the same way if you added a transfer mid semester? Is there going to be any clashing of heads of him viewing? I'm the attorney who put up these big numbers last year. I'm the guy versus Tyron Stokes thinking, hey, I'm the guy. Is there going to be anybody in the heads there? Is that going to be a seamless transition? I don't know. It's going to be kind of inching how that stuff goes, but they're all good problems to have. Get the best talent you can. Go in some dang games. All right. Let's get to the scouting reports of Perlatives, Team Fit, and touch a little bit on the TKR potential interest. This is Locked on Jay Hawks. If you think the tray white takes Kansas over the top, right now is your time to back Kansas. By the time you listen to this, this number might be different because some people might throw a little bit of money and be like, Kansas is how low on the odds board. Because playing on the Exhibit 10 contract, like you're going to be bouncing with the G League and stuff. You're probably making less than six figures.
Well, Kansas, there's a good chance you're going to make sure. If you would have been available back in the Spring Transfer Portal or to bring back normally, he probably would have been due for a good raise to make multi-million dollars. But even if he's making what he was last year, around a million, a half somewhere in that range, that's a big jump of what he would have made in the pros this past year. I think it makes sense from all parties here. What is the best skill for tray white as we look at this superlative scouting report? I think the three-point shooting has to be in the discussion here in terms of when you look at impact, right? You're talking about him shooting over 40% from three-point range. Now if the three-point shooting regresses a bit because you're talking about somebody for his career, is it 34% from three? He had never taken more than 2.73 point attempts per game until his past season in Kansas, where he shoots 40% on four attempts per game. Maybe this was his senior year glow-up and he practiced it even more and he just got better
over time. If it's more to his career numbers of being closer to a 35% three-point shooter, then that's not his best skill. If it is like last year where you're 40%, then that probably is your best skill. If it does regress, I would say his best skill would then be aggressiveness, right? Being aggressive, driving, getting to the free-throw line, cutting to the rim hard, being aggressive in transition, getting rebounds, I would say that would be the one to go with. My favorite stat for tray white, it could easily be that three-point shot because again, shooting over 40%, that's a big deal. But honestly, I'm going to go with the free-throw shooting. You're talking a good volume of free-throw attempts. He took 141 free-throw attempts this season ago. He shot 87% at the free-throw line. That is one thing that a little bit unsung how elite of a free-throw shooter he was. He improved his free-throw shooting every year in college. You look at the three-point shooting, that's getting better every year. Again, that probably shows you how hard of a worker he is, which goes in line with some of the interviews you saw about him being picked up by the Miami Heat, a team that really
emphasizes that. So, that just makes you feel like he is going to continue to get better. The free-throw number is cool for a couple of reasons, one, because he's getting there a lot, two, he's converting them. That also shows you the hard work and the touch required to be that good three-point shooter. Favorite advanced stat? He was in the 93rd percentile or better in both offensive and defensive rebounds per 100 possessions this past season. He's a really good rebounder, especially coming from the wing position. And when you look at Kansas already having some really good rebounds, it's only going to emphasize that should be a real strength for this team this season. Like, Keanu Dau's elite defensive rebounder. Paul and Bia should be a good rebounder on both sides of the floor. Christian Reeves is a good rebounder on both sides of the floor. Tyrant Stokes should be a good rebounder on both sides of the floor. If a good rebounder here in Trey White, again, this should be a really good rebounding team for Kansas. A favorite underrated stat for Trey White. Did you know he finished in the 92nd percentile in adjusted efficiency as a pick and roll
passer? Now, part of that is when you're throwing lobs to floory, but doing go on some of those that's going to help your efficiency. But like, he was a better playmaker off of pick and roll than you might think. And I like that ability because now you can basically like, if you really want to, you can run an offense where you're just like trade and blows between Tyrant Stokes and Trey White running pick and roll. You know, and it is interesting because we know he struggled as an inbound passer and hopefully KU goes to somebody else as an inbound passer, but as a pick and roll passer, that was certainly a positive for Trey White. What was the best game for Trey White this past season? Two stick out to me. I mean, Houston game in big 12 play where he had 23 points. KU beats Houston in the field house. He had five rebounds. He's making all these threes. He's contributing at both ends of the floor is providing energy. That was a huge one. Honestly, I think his best game though was was that early noncon game. Darren Peterson was out and he had to step up more and he did against Duke in the Champions Classic. He had 22 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
He was awesome for Kansas against Duke and gave KU a shot to win that game game, even without Darren Peterson and then Duke kind of pulled away at the end there. But I would say that was, that was probably his best game of the season. Biggest questions coming into the air for Trey White. He was only an 18th percentile in adjusted efficiency in the mid range game. And yet he was taking him at a, it wasn't a huge number of shots, but it wasn't a low number either, right? And especially as the season wore on, that became a thing that he was just missing mid range shots. So is that something that he can get better at or is that something that you just try to avoid altogether? The other one is this like in the noncon and going back to that Duke game, part of what made him so effective was he was awesome. Getting to the rim that would allow him to get to the free throw line. That would allow him to, you know, make shots at the rim. But overall when you look at it, so he shot from the, I guess if you're viewing it from
the baskets in front of me, he shot, what is this 44% on layups from the left side of the rim? And he shot, let's see, 70% from layups on the right side of the rim. Overall he shot 59% from the right side of the paint and 60% from the left side of the paint, okay? Which are both about average, right? It's nothing to stick out. But once we get into conference play here, he's shooting 46% from the right side of the paint down to 57% on layups there. And he's down to 25% on layups from the left side of the paint where he's 57%. So for whatever the free throw numbers went down then to, I don't know if it was a Darren Peterson thing where just like his game just didn't mesh playing with Peterson or what it was. But those numbers went out. Can you keep that going all season long this year? And then in general, like speaking of kind of fading off here, what happened at years end for, for tray white? This wasn't like a month long thing.
This wasn't tray white struggled in all of February. Like actually before the final four games of the season. So you're talking the two big 12 tournament games and the two NCAA tournament games. The final six games then of the regular season, tray white had 11 or more points in all six games. Two of them he had 23 points. So like he was still consistently producing points for you, the final six games of the regular season. But then he gets to the post season. He goes eight points, five points, 12 points and four points. And it was just like what happened here, and especially the same John's game was his worst game of the season. They came in an unfortunate moment. You know, so they could calling off Darren Peterson thing in the Cal Baptist game, which you know, that that certainly rubbed people the wrong way. So you know, what happened there at the end of the season? I'm kind of of the oak of like I just think it was like a bad stretch of games at a bad point of the season. If that bad stretch of games sort of happened in January, we wouldn't really be talking about it. But I'm not overly worried about it to be completely honest.
Best shot zone. People are going to assume it's the corner three for tray white and he shot very well from the corner. Interestingly enough, he actually didn't shoot that high of a percentage from the right corner. It was the left corner that he was knocked down. He was also really good from the left wing. So if you blur those together, yes. But from just the left corner specifically, he was 13 of 25. That's good for 52% from the left corner from three. However, he actually was 21 of 40. So higher volume, same percentage, 52% from the top of the three point arc. So actually his best shot zone was the top of the three point arc. And then best play style, he was awesome in transition. You're talking 93% tile in adjusted efficiency on transition points per position. He was awesome there. And then one other thing that's probably worth mentioning here when we go back to the fact that he is somebody who by all accounts works really, really hard and is somebody who seems
to improve every year. I look at him as being somebody who, when you look at the summer league, how he performed is probably further proof of that and further proof that because if he was doing this in the summer league, doesn't that make you feel really good about playing against other guys who are trying to be pros or our pros or young players in the pros who are drafted? I, he put up 17.3 points per game, 5.8 rebounds per game, 2.8 assists per game, 1.8 steals per game, shot 48% from the floor, 40% from three on seven and a half attempts for game. And that's at the NBA line. So that would tell you that three point shot is there to stay. He didn't miss a single free throw. He was taken over to per game. That tells you that he's going to be even better this year. And if you get an even better version of Trey White who should have been at all conference pick last year and you're pairing that with Tyron Stokes, that is the best wing duo in the country. And the last time you could say that, the KU had the best wing duo in the country. I don't know. Maybe you could have said it about the 2023 team with Jalen Wilson, Kevin McCuller and
Grady Dick, you probably could. That's he got a one seat, right? And then the year before you could probably say it with Christian Brown and Jalen Wilson and O. Chagbaji. That's him on the title. So Bill Sultas well when he has good wings turns out. Let's get to the fit and then a little bit on TKR. This is Locked on J Hawks. Guards issued by JP Morgan, Jay's bank and a member of the SE subject to credit, approval terms apply. So thanks again for drawing on us here. What is the fit for tray white? So it's less of a question of me of like if he can play games, he's a starter, you know, and that it's more of a question of who you're taking out of the lineup. It goes one of two ways. Tyrant soaks will be in the starting lineup, right?
Keanu Dawes will be in the starting lineup. Trey White would be in the starting lineup. So now it just becomes a question of where you're sliding these guys. Are you playing two guards and making Keanu Dawes a small ball five where you have white and stokes at the three and four and then you have say, blight in and Kenny at the one and two or Kenny and Rosario or whoever you want to pick for those. Are you playing big where you have say, and be at the five Dawes at the four stokes and white at the two three and then you have your one small guard in blight and or Kenny, right? Like which way are you going to go with that? I do think it's interesting because immediately you would think, yeah, but Trey White's not a two. I wouldn't think about it that way. I would think about it as this. If you're going to go with that lineup where it's one small guard and then you have white and stokes and then you have Dawes and ambia, I would think about it this way. Trey White's stokes is your top ball handler and play initiator. So offensively, Trey White's stokes is actually your point guard.
Then you have your Tameline, Kenny, Eli, Rod, Blight and is your off guard and then Trey White's your three in that scenario. Now defensively, I guess somebody would have to be the two, but I feel like stokes is a better athlete than Trey White. So maybe you'd have stokes defending the two and you'd have, you know, Trey White defending the three, I guess that just kind of depends on the matchup and how you want to go about that. But you know, from how it impacts KU, you can have enough shooting, you have another 40% shooter around tyrant soaks. That's great. You have another really good rebound, right? Like detailed, the really good rebounding that KU has on this team. You have an experienced player, right? Like, the biggest impact is going to be on who's felt around it, right? Like I said, who's coming off the bench now is kind of the big question. And then the other big question is who would this squeeze out of the rotation? Is it now a competition between Cole, Rosario and Dennis Parker, not just to potentially be like the sixth man, but whoever loses that, are they now the ninth man? You notice this bump, Luke Barnett down from being ninth man, spot minutes to tenth
man, or does Luke Barnett stay as the ninth man, spot minutes where it's valuable to have that go to the three point shooter. And now whoever loses between, you know, Parker, or Rosario is your tenth man. So it gets really interesting on who this is going to impact. And that competition between Dennis Parker and Cole, Rosario just had a lot more fierce because there's a lot more stakes for the loser. That's for sure. Okay. I did want to make mention of this. There was a mention from Trilly Donovan that Kansas is trying to get, I don't know, is or was trying. I don't know which one you'd put it at. Tray Kaufman rent, the big man from Purdue, who's like an all big ten big man, but that the administration basically told them, no, so I would think it was kind of a money thing. And I don't know how much money we're talking here because with the big man market, Tray Kaufman rent, if you had been available in the spring, could have probably gone for like five, six million dollars, like, flurry money, right? But now that it's later in the game, that number's probably down, but how much down are we talking about here, right?
Like, are we talking to an half million, where KU could have afforded it, but I don't know. Who knows what the situation is, is it's something where KU could still kick the tires, is it's something that KU is waiting on Melvin Council to figure out what they're going to do with their last scholarship. Do you go there? Do you go to a manual look, Paulette, a pole, I guess this further keeps your hat in the ring to potentially make it happen. It's not necessarily something that I'm expecting to happen, but I mean, shoot, I already really, really like this Kansas team now that they added Tray White. If you added Tray Kaufman rent, heck, if you added Melvin Council, heck, if you added a manual with Bollet, I mean, there are real final four expectations now with how this roster has come together. It's a good thing, because that's what we're used to in Lawrence.
