Check it out, play Alberta dot C a Jason Greger, Connor, Halle, Decklin, Kruger with you as the Houston Astros just slowly they gave up for in the first inning, but they have hit three solo home runs. And here we are now in the top of the six and it's suddenly four to three. So they'll try to match the Phillies who are down three to one and came back with three home runs of their own to win four to three, stave off elimination and Houston at home, trying to do the same thing. But history tells not great on their side, only one team in the history of the best of three in MLB wall card has lost game one and then come back to win the series. That was the Yankees last year, only team to do it. So the cubbies, the Astros, the Red Sox and the Phillies, a little bit of a uphill battle. We'll see if somebody else can complete it. Phillies at least are halfway there because they won game two. Now let's get to the spectraport brought you by GS construction, your underground infrastructure
specialists who are hiring go to GS construction, dots, yeah slash careers and you'll see they're hiring, pipe layer, top man and a super intended and they got a lot of good opportunities. That's only going to be there for limited time. So check it out at GS construction, dots, yeah slash careers as a markspector from Rogers. Sports net joins us once again, spec it afternoon. How you doing? Doing okay man. How's everyone pretty happy with gold ending last night? Jerry's not taking any flak on the show today. I'm sure hopefully he starts again more night. That's where we're thinking. Well, I don't think he was going to start anyway. I thought it was going to be definitely by, but I think for sure this one is not going to happen. I think my question to you spec is because I think Levi was going to go to game two regardless. But after game one by Jerry, do you think Mike Babcock like does he want to go back to him
quickly just to see or do you think he might say, hey, if Levi plays well for four, five games, I'm going with Levi. What do you think he does early in the year? Well, I mean, let's see where it goes tomorrow night. You know, let's see where it goes. I think the rehabbing the start of the season and having a good start as a team is more important than rehabbing Jerry's start and having a good start as a goalie. So team first goalie second. But I don't think he's going four or five in a row with Levi. I think you got to go back to Jerry. They're going to need Jerry. They can't just throw him in the trash heap here. They need him to play and they have to, you know, they got to try him again. I don't know what to say about the guy. I mean, he had the whole summer. He's healthy. We heard all that's trained and worked and blah, blah, blah. I don't spack. He didn't look, he didn't look at Iota different than the goalie we saw last year that had a, you know, eight, 50 or whatever he had, right?
He looked exactly the same last night. So Catherine way, you got to go to him eventually. How soon it'll be? I don't know who knows, man. Yeah. Um, hey, what wasn't great performance by Jerry for sure. Um, wasn't great performance by the orders and giving up odd man rushes and basically three breakaways in the game. They did scratch and clotherway back from a five to deficit to, to tie the game, you know, pod Coleson score twide, boo, shout out himself a hell of a game. See a record breaking opening night game for defenseman with, uh, with five points. And yeah, if you look at bootshards playing the preseason, I know it's preseason, but still it's got 10 points in three games in the, in the minutes he's played this year like he as good as he was last year. There's a lot of signs that bootshard might be better this year. Well, I mean, yeah, certainly with points wise like he's, well, did you see it may go in defensive errors yesterday? No, no, no, that's, I mean, that's what I'm going to say is the most important thing is the game evens out that he, you know, listen, he's a Norris trophy waiting to happen.
He's always going to get enough points to qualify. It's just his defensive game that has to get there. So you know, last night was kind of weird like he scored three goals without taking a slap shot. You know, he, the first thing he said after the game is none of those goals go in if guys don't crash the net. I think one of the differences with this Babcock team we saw it in training camp is they're going to shoot from the point. They're going to give himself a chance to, you know, like let's, let's face it. Couple of those because especially the third goal. I mean, he just turned around and whipped it at the net. It's a lucky goal. But guys are in the goalies face. Guys are in the way. And I think we'll, that's a difference. We'll see with this team there. I think the defensemen are being told to shoot the puck more into the crowd and see what happens. And got lucky last night. Yeah, no, that is, that is true. No boost bombs, right? No, no boost bombs last night. No, you don't know. Hey, get pucks on net through a screen. Now, Boushara, the thing about Boushara is like he's very accurate shooter, right?
Like, and he'll never say anything. But if you look at his first goal, like he, that guy isn't just shooting on net. Sometimes he shoots for openings. Like I've seen him one time, the puck into the top corner and he doesn't often enough that I know it's not just close your eyes and shoot as hard as you can. Like he's pretty, he's very accurate. And I, I remember talking about that. And just the other day, actually about, you know, kind of his routine as a young guy and what he did. And so it started in junior and he put 20 pucks in the ice and he said all he did was look at the net. He even look at the puck, right? He just looked at the net every day in practice. Every day he would take 20 shots and sometimes more, but minimum 20 and never looked down at the puck and just shoot and just get comfortable having his head up looking where he wanted to go. And there's a reason why like you don't just get lucky with accuracy accuracy. Just repetition, time and time and time again. Were you surprised at Fomenton played the left wing on the top line, which forced then Joseph to have to move over to the right side on his line? What did you make of that decision with Fomenton over Howard?
I didn't mind the decision. I see how it could work. I didn't mind the fact that they left Howard where he was and didn't, you know, take a guy like that put him on McGeeva's wing right away. I'm fine with that. I don't think that line was very effective. It didn't work great. Fomenton had a fairly quiet game. Hell, McDavid had a fairly quiet game. So I didn't have a problem with the decision and I could see how it was made and why it was made, but I'm not sure they make it again. What do you think? Probably not. Right? Well, no, I think that you think they're going to switch that line. I think Fomenton's probably going to stay there, don't you? Maybe I don't know. Like I'm just saying that line didn't knock my socks off. They weren't great. No, they weren't great, but they also didn't give up a ton either, right? So I think that's the first line. My first line can't get away with saying we didn't give anything up. The first line's got a creative. Well, I mean, yeah, but well, they were on for three goals for it, five on five and
not against. Yeah. Yeah, I know. But wasn't, you know, they don't pay McDavid to go to the net and set a screen for Bouchard's wrist shots, man. Let's face it here. Yeah. So if you're asking me how effective they were offensively, they weren't that effective offensively. It doesn't mean they played bad. I'm not telling that they were awful. I'm just saying if that's the combination and maybe you give it another game, I'm fine with that. Fomenton's speed next to McDavid should work. But upon the first game, now that it's over, when we watched it for 60 minutes, that line did not was not wholly effective offensively. They just weren't. Yeah. And then McDavid, you know, McDavid and dry subtle, hey, Emmington scored five goals. McDavid and dry subtle weren't dominant like that's and that's why I've always said for everybody offense is not the orders issue here. I don't. I want to ask, man. No, definitely hasn't beaten so. And listen, let's call a speed of speed. How many how many scoring chances of the give up last night? Like high grade. Did anyone check that? I read like five or six.
Well, I don't know if I believe that considering like, well, was the two was the short-handed first goal at good chance? I think so. The sass and goal was a good chance. It's a break like they scored three breakway goals and a two on one. So I guess now they scored on four of them. Score two breakaway goals and a two on one. Well, no, no. You had the the Rossi breakaway goal. You had the Sassoon breakaway goal. The overtime winning goal to me is a breakaway from the top of the circle. Yeah. I guess I'm talking regulation, but sure. Yeah. I mean, my point is they didn't hemorrhage chances. No, no. So, the truth is, the chances of the give up were very, very high grade. You know, they didn't they had the puck the first half of the game. They had the puck for, you know, huge portion of the time. And then just again, when Vancouver got a chance, it was an excellent one. So, you know what, they're like two saves away from us saying they played pretty well. I'll be honest with you. You know, there are two saves away. If you give me in regulation, they had two breakaways and a two on one.
They were all goals. You save on one of the three. One of the three just give you a save, okay? Don't let in LeCarramaki, which was a horrible goal. Now Vancouver scores three goals. You know, you beat him for three. You go, ah, we're kind of losing. We weren't great, but it was the first game we let in three goals. It's not bad. But no, your goalie doesn't give you a single save until overtime. And let's in a garbage goal from the caramaki. And now we're talking about a horrible team play. I'm not telling you they played well. There are goalie away from giving you an acceptable opening game with the season. That's all I'm saying. Yeah. Oh no, I didn't, I don't think it was, it wasn't an awful game for long stretch, but they still gave up six goals from goal tending to making glaring errors that led to some pretty good chance. Like you look at the sass, I'm goal. But David comes in the offense's own button hooks inside it with all type of a time, right? And the sass gets knocked down. They go back and it's a two on two at the blue line.
Right. And pod Coleson, right? Pod Coleson unfortunately now he's not a defender naturally, but he turned towards them to the boards and that allowed sass into then jump to the net and he couldn't recover, right? And pod Coleson, you could see his reaction was annoyed at himself, right? How did he just stayed in the lane and not turn towards the boards? Then nothing happens. But I, you know what? And little mistakes like that, Bing, bang, boom, and you know what? Your goalie at some point's got to stop one break away. Well, you're playing without a net. Now, you're like a trapeze guy. You're playing without, there's no net underneath yet. You make a mistake and it's in your goal. You don't have a goalie that gives you safe in that game. And you can't survive. Sorry. No team plays perfect hockey, right? NHL teams can't win if you put a guy in net that's not an NHL. You know, that's just not giving you a save. Everybody needs to be able to make a mistake once a while and get covered up by the goalie. That's the position like it or not. So, you know, it's not all on the goalie, but the goalie could have changed things a lot.
And if we're waiting around for the orders to be a perfect defensive team every night, so Jari can get some wins, we're going to wait a long time. You know, we're going to wait a long time. Jari's got to be about 180 percent better than he's been since the day he got to town. Like let's call a spade a spade. This guy's not an NHL starter. He hasn't been since the day he got here. So how long are we going to look at this guy and call him an NHL starter, Jason? He's not a starter. He's safe percentage. Since he got them, it is 850. 850. There's guys in NHL have been 850. Dude, hey, that's what I said. Like when people say it's one game, I'm like, it's one game this year, but he has started on 17 games and 11 of them. He's allowed four more goals. Yeah, he's not always on bad defense. I agree with that. I always know I'm the first guy to stand up and say that I had the argument for two skinner a lot that the environment was two skinner's biggest problem that we always
blame him in games like last night because it was always his fault. But Jari's the other side of the coin. Jari just hasn't been any kind of safety net for an offensive team since the day walked the door. I don't know how long we're going to sit around and wait and tap our feet till he turns into an NHL starter, but I'm bored with it, right? That is fair. Now on the other side, the Vancouver conucks specates one game is good for them. They didn't play. It's not like they dominated Emton, but they do look a lot quicker than they did last year and they pressure the puck more like look at Carter that goal and over time. That's all Carter wins a battle on shame, knocks him off the puck, then gets up before she beats him to the net and scores. Like I get caught are a lot of credit in that overtime goal and that's something the conucks really didn't have last year like that. That's a city and a team and a fan base that will be just like any victory they have will be a big victory, especially when it's on the road against Emton. Yeah, it's good for that organization to get an early win that way.
You know what I mean? Listen, 30 second place last season, right? Total overhaul of the front office here. Lots of players in and out major issue with their highest paid guy in Patterson. Like they're they're trying to rebound and give their city and their team and their community something to be proud of. But that's a great start. Like it's good for them. Good for Vancouver. I'm still saying it's going to be a rough year. So find some joy when you can. They found some last night and maybe they find some more and more tonight here in Vancouver. But good for them. I'm the hockey's a better place when Vancouver is good. I always say it. They're not going to be a good team. Edmonton's going to finish 15 or 20 points ahead of them. All of those things I think are still true. But for one night at least they were the better team last night. It's back. You almost called it. Your cup has got absolutely hammered. Right. Yes. I'm assuming I don't know if you didn't want to know the score but something tells me
when you left the rink, you're like, I don't need to watch that game. It was eight. Nothing. As kicking for your cubbies. Can they bounce back and stay off elimination tonight? Gossman's going tonight. So I'm kind of looking forward to seeing that. Watch as much as I can of that game. So I don't know. Like sure. I heard your stat that no one who loses the first game almost ever wins the Yankees last year. So I don't love that stat much. But yeah, that's a great stat, man. I was just like, holy cow, one in 15. So yeah, first game matters a lot. Best of three is a tough. Best of three is a tough boy. So I don't know. Listen a little bit hockey on again tonight. We're back into this is the great time of year. Once hockey starts, the sports calendar is so crowded up. Today's Wednesday. There's football tomorrow. There's hockey tomorrow. There's baseball every night and day. And oh my god. Like it's a good time to be in the road. I don't know if my wife telling me to paint the house or move on or something. I love it. Speck enjoy the night.
We will see if Babcock outside of the goal tender. Like do you think he put Emerson in the lineup tomorrow? I might like, you know, was there one defenseman that really was terrible? You know, like he's going in for a milk, I'm a doula and if he goes in and I don't see any reason to not, you know, to exclude Emerson from the lineup. I don't think this team played so great. They can't be a change tomorrow. So my message, if I'm coaching this team, I only got one spare. I got one spare in Emerson. My message is you play like that. The spare is going in. So yeah, I'm playing it tomorrow and I'm playing Levi absolutely for sure tomorrow. Oh, yeah. Yeah, no question. I think I think it would be 100% agreement across the board that Devon Levi will be getting the start. I thought he was going to start anyway, but I have a back aim. It makes that decision a no break. They're in trouble. Like he better play. Levi better give him some goal tending or, you know, none of it works. If no one believes in the goal tending, like it none of it works here.
So this is an important start for Levi is the opportunity, man. Here's a guy, right? He's had a shot in Buffalo, but then they kind of didn't have a shot. Now he's here. The door is wide open. Anderson's heard. Jerry's not very good. Like this job could be his. This could be his launching pad, man. It's a big, big time in his career. See how he has it. All right, spec have yourself a lovely day. We will chat with you. I do me. I'm good, Jake. I go. It's Mark Specter. The specter board brought you by GS construction. When we come back a team last year that they were the best regular season team. It wasn't even close scored the most goals allowed the fewest goals, but didn't got swept in the third round. It's AI grounded in your context to get work done and done right. It's a new workday. Well, the white socks? Big bomb of their own. They back now have a four-run lead again, seven to three as the Houston Astros. Oh, so sorry for an organization. I don't know, they've won since she doesn't matter. Is it petty if me, 100%, I admit it. But, well, forget it. Not doing it. And they're eight outs away from being eliminated too straight at home. They didn't deserve to be at home anyway.
They're brutal. They didn't even have a winning record. So I can 8, 3, 3, 4, 1, 14, 48, 3, 4, 1, 14, 40. As it is time to get to our big guest of the day brought to you by Go Auto. If you're looking for a vehicle. Not only to have great vehicles, but they got a big heart. They've donated over $27 million to charities in the communities where they work. That is go auto dot C a and we are going to talk about the Colorado avalanche because last year there was no better team in the regular season than the Colorado avalanche. They had the had the most points. They scored the most goals. They allowed the fewest goals. They were plus 99 actually. I don't know if that's this is just a little rant right now. The pet people about the NHL. If you go to their standings page, it's not actually accurate because it includes
shootout goals, which is ridiculous. So on their on the front page, it'll say they were actually plus 99. That's false. They were plus 101 because they scored 298 goals and they allowed 197. No goals. No one gets credit for them. You can't count them for actual goals just to you know, side note, but anyway, the the abs. The only team in the NHL that to allow less than 200 goals, they allowed 25 fewer goals in every team in the NHL. They were at 197. Dallas was at 222. Tampa was at 229. Minnesota 235. Carolina 236. Like they were really good. And then probably one of the bigger surprises to me was seeing them get swept by Vegas. I did not see that coming. So probably a little bit of a bad taste in their mouth in Colorado. As the season begins, they've got Joe Sackick back as their GM.
If you missed it yesterday, Andrew Cogliano is a new assistant GM for the ad lunch. And it's funny, Cons because remember we were talking about Greer and Stales and Horkoff. And Gary and inform Reuters. And as I said, well, Andrew Cogliano to me is the next guy who he's always had managed to type really smart guy. I really good to actually talk to Andrew yesterday. And so obviously it was pretty fired up about his promotion and don't be surprised if down the road. He's the next GM of the abs. I would not be shocked at all or GM somewhere as a Connor McGay. He joins us. Connor, welcome to show man. How you doing? You fellas? How are we doing up there? The boarding. Oh, well, I have Emmington fans. You know, the thing is sometimes you get immune to things. And so it's not the first time that they've seen a bad goal-tending performance in some little bit of weak defense. So it's game one. So we'll see. But yes, there's not a lot of joy. There's some concern for sure here. What about in Colorado? Like that, that an unbelievable regular season. They're clear to the best team.
There's no debate. But then they get to the playoffs and when they got to the Western Conference final, I was stunned at how that series went. Yeah, I mean, I think everybody was, but and someone around here put it the best. They said the abs had a really bad week and Vegas had a really good week. You know, because the Golden Knights were, they were good against Utah. They weren't great against Anna Hein, somehow the ducks were worse. Really good against us and then not great against Carolina. So you need to have four good series, Jared Bednar said that in his post-morting skate availability today. He said, you know, you and I just showed this morning in our station. He said, look, you need to do that for every series and we didn't do that for every series. I don't think they deserved it necessarily get swept. But just wouldn't go in the net. So I sometimes it's just as simple as, you know, we all have good days and bad days. The avalanche at a bad week and Vegas had a good week and that's, but you know,
the abs lost in 21 to Vegas. They were up to nothing in that series. Golden Knights came back to Inforcery, Winnington 6. And that was the very famous Nathan the Ken and press conference. I haven't won S yet, right? Yeah. And that was the Salar taste that fueled the 22 cup run, I think. And I get similar, similar feelings around here with, with a mostly intact roster from last year with three exceptions. The Ross Colby Jack, you're a little bit too. But for everybody else, the big main stays here in Colorado, I think that it's a similar feeling to that. Yeah. And if you look at because of the deadline, aqua, Justin, and such last year. So you lose in a Tushkin, but their top stick still has cadre in nature. And leckin and land is gone with Nelson and McKin and so like, or top six is pretty good. Jaden Schwartz comes in at TJ Hughes also. Looks, I know it's preseason, but what did you make of those two players? They're both incredibly smart hockey players.
And if there's one thing that I think Joe Sackig would know when he saw it, it'd be a smart hockey player, right? Yeah. But Jaden Schwartz, I mean, I've watched him play. He was at CC and I went to University of Denver down here in Colorado. He just torched us all the time. And watched his entire career, obviously, Captain the Blues, the Cup. And one of the greatest cup runs in modern history in 2019, but, you know, just 34. You know, it feels like he's been around for a long time. But when you playing for Seattle for a couple of years, I feel like he just sort of got lost and nobody talked about him. And you can only carry so much water. So I think he was thrilled to be able to sign here. And that's going to be a great addition as a third line winger. I think it's perfect, you know, to be a part of power play number two. As it stands right now, Lannis Scott Nelson and Cadre. Cadre is going to be on the wing. It is going to be your second line. But if you have to move Cadre somewhere else, I mean Schwartz can go right there, no problem.
So fantastic signing and TJ Hughes is the same way. Jared Bednar keeps describing him. Excuse me, it's a re-bilt. He sees the game and there's a reason that he's been put on the first power play with McCarr and McKinnon. Not just anybody can go up there and do that. If you see the game similar to those two, I think that's a great compliment to how you can play and how you can think the game. And you know, he had a four point night on Friday versus the Jets. And that was a Jets roster that should start opening night, including Stewart Skinner. And those goals, you know, I know the one is kind of a leaky one on Skinner, but he was in the right place the right time. And he's just, he's a smart player. And I think that you don't captain Michigan. You're not a hobby baker, finalist, you're not a smart player. And he chose Colorado and Bednar said today as well. He said he didn't make it because LaRue and O'Connor are not going to play on opening night. He earned that spot.
And I think he earned it because of his skill, but mostly because of his brain. Connor, you mentioned the power play and with all like you got Nathan McKinnon, you got McCarr, you got Nelson, you got natures and their power play was terrible pretty much all year. And then in that series against Vegas, it was only 10%. So what was it and it was weird because the previous years, they've been pretty good. Like why are they not able to find anything on their power play and why do you think this year they can maybe get back to being that 24 25% power play? Yeah, it's hard to say. And I think if they knew, they would have fixed it. I mean, so I don't know whether it's too predictable or they're just trying to pass the puck into the net because 27th in the NHL at 17% with that type of personal on the ice is not good enough. You're 25th on all mice. And it's interesting because the penalty kill was number one overall, number one on the road very good. You know, Colorado won a Jennings ROT. So the puck was going in the net plenty and it was staying out plenty.
There just wasn't on the power play. So they've had a couple months now to think about it and to think out of fix it and maybe with putting TJ Hughes at the bumper at Landis Gog in front that Ken and along the wall, some place that he doesn't spend a ton of time. Gold line extended down to the corner. That's some place that they didn't really live. We see a ton of teams do a Weeran Utah for the preseason finale on Saturday and that's where it cool he just exists right at the side of the net and he's going to pass. He's going to shoot. It's a constant threat and that's something that the avalanche never really did. And I think after what happened in that Vegas series are open to exploring all kinds of possibilities. They know it's not even close to being good enough. I think if you're going to win and go far, you have to be top 10 in both. Categories, PK was solid. We expect that to be the exact same even with Logan O'Connor and Zach LaRue out to get going here, but the power play has more pressure on it than anything else when it comes to the
Colorado avalanche this season. Parker Kelly, 21 goals last year. It was phenomenal. Right now he's listed as the as the 4C, but isn't really play the 4C, does he? No, not really. The beauty of Ken Moore, Alberta, absolute one of my favorite people ever. He can play center. I think Jared likes him on the wing more. He's more successful there, but there's that internet video with Scott Sterling. He's stopping all the PKs in the soccer game. It's like an early video. That's kind of like Parker Kelly. He's out there. He's just selling out. I think there was a sequence, Weblox six times. So we started calling him Scott Sterling. You know, the defensive aspect, the hard work aspect finally turned into offensive prowess. And he's got scale. He's probably the best breakaway score on the team if you can believe that. He absolutely shreds the breakaway, the end of practice.
And you know, they're going 11 and 7 and I just start out tonight with the injuries to LaRue and O'Connor. Juleson will be the seventh, the tencent for the ads. So that means the Parker Kelly is going to get, you know, a different time with Nicholas Waw and maybe PJ Hughes down there. Schwartz will take a couple bites. But yeah, no center is not usually where he lives. He's usually on the wing, but the good thing about Parker Kelly is he goes wherever you tell him to go. Yeah. And when you have a guy in the bottom who doesn't play power play time or really a little bit here and there, but produces that much. That's huge for a team. No question. He's constant energy. He's always always going going back to his days as a member of the Prince Albert Raiders. What one last one for you? Look at the blue line of the and one storyline that I know it's one that it's it's hard to ignore, but the ages wonder Brent Burns and the quest for the Iron Man. How much how much talk will that have this year? It'll it'll be talked about every single night.
You know, 1,07 now trying to get past the 1064 said by Phil Kassel. So yeah, we there will be I guarantee a graphic put on television every single night about the Brent Burns Iron Man, but maybe he'll get there faster now that all the hair and the beard has been trimmed off and down a little bit more. He looks he doesn't look 41 anymore. He's back to be in 28 again. So he wanted to come back. The team wanted him back and you know, kind of like Parker Kelly on with the forward group. I mean, Burns is sort of that character for the back end and you need that. You really do. And I think he was using a plus 40s last year. Yes. If I remember correctly, which is which is beyond impressive. How reliable is that guy to have on your on your blue line? So if all goes according to plan and that record should be his in a couple of months time. Yeah. I think it's February 13th. The whole game against Columbus would be the record breaking night. If you get Sarah and I really hope he does get there.
It's amazing to see the guy hasn't missed a game since 2013. It's absolutely wild. Connor and Joy, we always look forward to the orders. Apps games are always entertaining and best luck in the season. We'll talk again soon. Thanks boys. Call anytime. There you go. That is Connor McGay. He joining us from altitude sports radio in Denver, Colorado. We'll take our final break. We'll come back. We got Cam Tate the two minute warning and more. It's a Gregor Show. Upgrade your furnace or your AC right now saving more Legacy Heating. DOC is Camtate, the two minute warning. Cam was hosting our winner last night at the at the game and they both had a great time, which was awesome. And we might do that again later on this year. So if you're looking for a behind the scenes opportunity, it's a pretty cool event. The Camtate of course, longtime journal, Suntown Cam, born with cerebral palsies in a wheelchair, is never let him slow him down. He's always wanted to be on radio through the wonders of technologies, Cam's words come to life now in the two minute warning. His mother was matey. His father was Irish. He grew up in Skied, Ontario, a small mining town in the north where the winters were hard and the ice was everywhere and a boy with a hockey stick could still dream big. And this boy could play. He made the Toronto Maple Leafs at 21.
He stayed for 21 seasons. He wore the captain's C for 12 of them. In 1187 NHL games, more than any player in franchise history, he scored 296 goals, added 417 assists and put up 713 career points. Consmouth, a man who built dynasties, called him the best captain the Leafs ever had. He earned every single one of those points and he earned them the hard way. In visiting arenas, the old Detroit Olympia, the Boston Garden, buildings that held a thousand opinions about who belonged on the ice, it wasn't just the opposing players he had to beat. Fans greeted him with war woops from the stands, Tomahawk chops from the boards, taunts that had nothing to do with hockey and everything to do with something uglier. He kept playing. On the night of May 2nd, 1967 at Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto led the Montreal Canadians
2-1 late in the third period of game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final. Montreal pulled their goalie. The puck slid free up the ice. He gathered it, he shot. Empty net. 3-1. Final. The Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup. For what would be, as it turned out, the last time. Today is September 30th, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Today, we don't just lower a flag, we lower our defenses. We sit with the truth of what was done to children, indigenous children, taken from their families, stripped of their language, made to disappear from their own lives. Some of them never came home. It is a day to do better, to be better, even by one degree, because one degree held long enough changes direction entirely. The man who scored the 1967 Stanley Cup winning goal did not go to a residential school.
But we have to wonder how many children who did, how many boys with that same fire, that same stride, that same gift were too frightened, too broken, too far from a frozen pond to ever find out what they could do. How many of them could have played like George Armstrong? I'm Cam Tate, and this, this, this, this is the two-minute warning, sports 1440. Great one, Tater. It's very well said. George Armstrong was obviously one of the greatest Toronto Maple Leafs of all time, and unfortunately had to endure a lot of racial taunts throughout his career. Different era, it's just something that we can't, you never want to forget that. It's not that long ago. When you think about the entirety of the world, it's not that long ago at all. So, fantastic, as always, Tater. Well, well said.
833401, 1440, 833401, 1440. The Gregor Show always brought to you by playelberta.ca. We got some lots of texts to get to to wrap up the show. People want to instill about the Elks, Elks have a week off today, and we talked about it earlier. There's a good question for one of our listeners. Like, who should Elks fans be watching and rooting for? Well, you're cheering for Calgary and Toronto, because if those two teams win, it puts Ementon's magic number down to one. If they can win one of the remaining three games, that would guarantee them first place in the division. So in the West and get home field advantage. Now it's trending really well to get home field advantage, at least in the semi final, right now, but they obviously would love to get the final game home and and wrapped up in the Western final.
Then you only got to win one before you get to the great cup. And that would be the last time, because next year the new playoff format begins and there won't just be a win one and get to the championship, but which I'll admit honestly cons. I like it. There's more playoff games, but I'm more so like the fact that you don't need to win just one playoff game to get to the championship. I'm on board with you. And you know, it kind of opens it up for the fairytale run like a team getting hot at the right time. They were usually say, damn, you wouldn't want to see them in the playoffs. It kind of opens that one up, right? No, not things going to, you know, likely to get into the flow season. So yeah, I'm fired up for it next year, but looking forward to this year to see what the M.F. can do, because who would have thought that this much would have changed expectation for this team? You know, with the start of the year, we did our predictions. My, my bold prediction was playoffs and it wouldn't be crossover. And now the expectation is changed to, well, they should be hosting a game at that and having a by-week as well. So yeah, they've been a heck of a run for this team and it's going to be a great stretch down the rest of this year and a busy weekend in the CFL still meaningful for the green and gold, despite them not taking the field.
Yeah, well, that's, you put it in a position. I'm sure the players won't be watching, but you know that the coaches will be watching because, you know, what every opportunity to score? Maybe the players, you know, they're fans of the game. They may be watching some of the games. No question. So we'll see how it lays out, but things are looking pretty good for them. Hey, Greg, as an indigenous person, I really appreciate that segment from, from Tater and you. Hey, Nikki in the North side, 100% man. I think it's important to have a conversation about it. Right? People in our generation, our age, we weren't the ones doing it, but we can't be ignorant enough to be like, wow, just get over it because I think that's a very ignorant statement, especially when you do any type of research on generational trauma and how it impacts the people. All right. And if your grandparents or your parents were at the residential school, it's still impacts you, even though you weren't there. And you can read up on it. It's fantastic. It's something that I think at times we probably don't tap into enough in North America.
It's just the soul of a person and how it is. And how it impacts you in lots of different ways. One little thing I noticed, the Philadelphia Pittsburgh game, Ziegher said, as Jersey tucked in first, first shoe, she has, and then someone went over and said, hey, you got on Tucker Jersey. Hey, one guy who people thought maybe would have a good opportunity with more than one more chance in Pittsburgh and early on so far, so good. Nick Robertson, former mate belief scores the first school of the season for the penguins, Sydney, Crosby and Chris Latang with the helpers, no score early in the Irish Montreal game. And then later on tonight, the Los Angeles Kings, these Kings have such a weird schedule. In the first three weeks of the season, the Kings play six games. That's it. They've played tonight. And then now they only play five games in the first like 20 days in September. It's very sorry, October. It's very, very.
We'll be off to Conor Halle, Declan Krueger, I'm Jason Greger. Enjoy the MLB playoffs, the NHL and more will get set up the orders outside of Devon Levi.
