And the client refused to pay. I got his welcome to the cabizog outpost. I got a doozy for you today. So I'm out of the water and a friend of mine another captain shoots me a text and says hey, I'm out of the water. You out in the water and I said yeah what's going on? Are you good? He said yeah I've got a question for you. I want to know what would you do in this situation? And I said okay what's up? He said my client lost the rod. Like you lost the rod in the water? He said yeah I was like go look for it. Have you walked around? Have you pulled? Have you made some cast? He's like yeah I've spent the last hour trying to find this rod. He said what happened? He said the dude made a cast left the lure out in the water, put the rod down, turned around and got a drink of water, a bottle of water out of the cooler. And before I could say don't do that,
you know with the rod got smashed or the lure got smashed the rod took off and they never found it. They never saw it again. And I'm like bro that's terrible that's awful. Now this has happened to me in the past. A dude same thing cast it out. I said don't do that. He said it's fine. The rod took off. I couldn't grab it. I grabbed a different rod with a jighead. I slanted out there by the grace of God. I hooked the rod, reeled it in, handed to the client. He did reeled in the fish. That happened to me once. A second time I took an older couple and a boat went by and there were some waves and I said hey brace yourselves. I'm on the pulling platform. So brace yourselves. We got a couple waves coming by. Nothing big, nothing bad, nothing crazy. The lady lost her balance.
She dropped to try to control herself. Dropped to the deck and threw the rod on the water. I was like what a power pull down and the line was floating. I could see it. So I jumped in the water and I went and got it. Okay. Those are my two stories. But in this situation my buddy said they casted for an hour. Couldn't find it. They pulled around, looked for line, looked for pushing a some kind of wake. What could find it? Nothing. So I said look if you've spent an hour already move on. Don't ruin your trip. Don't lose a client and have a bad taste because of the like go go to your job cash and fish. And they had a banner day and I told him I said look hopefully the client does the right thing. Hopefully he has some integrity and some morals and
pays for it. Okay. You've got to remember y'all that us as guides it's not cheap being a guide. You know this as just as a right handkerr you understand hey you've got to buy equipment and you've got to buy gas and you've got to buy insurance and maintenance and for here in Orlando I'm spending a ton of money and tolls driving back and forth to the coast. Like there is expenses. We don't just go fishing. It's not free. Boats don't run on fakes right. So there's an investment there. I try to use the highest end equipment I possibly can. When you get on the boat I want you to have a quality rod and reel in your hand. Long before the show and I had a radio show a couple of weeks ago with Ty Nelson for Ford efficient products. I've been using Florida fishing product reels for for 10 years now. Crazy. 10 years. I've only had the caps lock TV for six. So for four
years I was using it before TV show. Same with TIFOROTS. I've been using TIFOROTS. Wow I've got my first one in college was a Summage 2 fly rod and then I started using their spinning rods for all the insurance stuff. So I've been using high end gear. The combos I have are like $500 a piece. I'm very blessed to have the opportunity to be a part of those teams and use that gear and buy that gear and put that gear in my clients hands. So think about it when we need four rods on the boat. You've got $2,000 worth of rods and reels right there. Okay. So this is what we try to do for our clients. This is what the opportunities we're trying to create for you and then be able to have quality equipment. So when you lose that equipment you should probably have the decency. I'm trying to be nice here. You should offer. Just do it. It was your fault dude. And so anyways
I told him as hopefully the dude you guys get back get paid for the trip and he just addresses the elephant in the room and takes care of it. That's what I would do. You know if I went fishing with someone or if I went hunting with someone I went and did something with some bugs someone's tools and I lost them or I broke them I feel obligated. I'm going to take care of it because on me I did. So several hours go by they finish their trip. Of course I'm like bro let me know what happens man I'm curious how this plays out. They get to the dock. My buddy says all right so your balance for the charter is this the guy pays them and goes no no what do you want what do you want to do about the Ron real and the client looked at him and goes that's on you bro. Oh no pay for that. And he's like but you lost it. Because no man that's that's cost of doing business. No guys no that is not the cost of doing business insurance maintenance tolls gas buying
equipment fixing equipment okay that's cost of doing business. You're losing the rod is not cost of doing business that was your fault and negligence right that was you're not thinking through your actions right what a situation okay you guys know we just talked about it doing this for a living is not cheap you know you book a charter you know you're paying $500 for a half day man that's not a half day it's not four hours on the water it's prep before it's prep after it's the years and time and experience that the guide has countless countless hours out on the water finding this fish staying on this fish and learning how to approach the fish learning how to present to the fish so so when it comes down to it like we're working for pretty cheap and when you lose a rod real
cost $500 and the charter was $500 and you don't offer to pay for it even though it's your fault the guide is making nothing so my buddy said okay listen I'll take some responsibility and it wasn't his fault let's split it 50 fit this is the rod this is the reel you can google it you can find out how much it cost let's split it 50 fit guys said no now I'm not paying it's your fault and then my buddy got pretty mad and then the guy stormed off and got his truck on left which probably good thing and my buddy was mad and he's a big dude and I want to make a mad buddy kept his cool and that was the end of it we have to be better you listen if you are booking a charter take responsibility now listen legally as guides
we need to make sure guides if you're a guide and you listen to this listen up you need to have that conversation with your client ahead of time hey this this happens this is the responsibility this is the result this is what's going to happen and we need to probably list it on your website so if there was ever an issue it's on the website hey before you go fishing make sure you're checking the website and you're reading x page or should text hey how this happened the past I learned from someone else's mistake yada yada do this this are the rules these are expectations I've got a friend again I'm not going to mention names his rule is if the real goes in the water it's yours he gives it to you it's no good to him anymore if it has any kind of salt water intrusion he doesn't care if it can be cleaned or or re greased or taken apart no it's over it's
now your real and you're buying a new one and he tells you tells all this client set up front you drop in the water insures and this is the price for replacement okay that's a little extreme but I understandable like I said earlier it's not cheap and now this equipment is in his eyes at risk for not lasting as long makes complete sense so let's just keep that in mind if you're booking a charter no one wants to be in this situation but if you're in this situation just man up pay for it okay if the guy to offer you a 50% discount to get through it you should take it because that's a blessing or just don't lose stuff to go with but wow that's tough that's tough guys we all all of us work very hard and we was the same is why we can't have nice things we all work very hard
and we want to take care of our stuff and we want it to last and this is an uncomfortable awkward situation where he refused to pay and now we all get to learn from it what a day man I'm I I felt bad my buddy um I offered him a reel he told me no I told him I do what I want because I'm man you know tell me what to do and he said I'm telling you and I'm not gonna take it so we're gonna we have a fish and trip planned and I'm gonna figure out I'm he's gonna hear this um whatever I'm gonna figure out a way bro to get you a replacement um because I feel bad I ain't ain't right um but anyways what a day what a what a story hey I'm Captain John the Moss this is the Caps log outpost guys uh friendly reminder head on over to social media at the Caps log TV I love connecting with you I love hearing from you I love the questions
