Angie had babysat for the family many times, so nothing about that Saturday night should have felt unusual.
Then she began hearing footsteps upstairs while both children were asleep.
Five-year-old Alex insisted another little boy sometimes came out of the playroom after bedtime. His parents had assumed he was imagining things, even when they began finding him standing alone in the hallway at night.
Angie tried to believe the same thing. Then she saw a child-sized figure step into the hallway herself.
Before the night was over, she would learn that Alex’s mysterious playmate had been visiting for months—and lately, he had begun asking Alex to come into the playroom after everyone else was asleep.

Angie had babysat for the family often enough that she no longer thought of it as a real
babysitting job. The parents lived three houses down from her own, and she had known both children for years. Their daughter Abigail was eight, and their son Alex had just turned five. They were easy kids. The house was familiar, and the parents were usually home before midnight. Most nights consisted of pizza, a movie, getting the kids into bed, and then sitting on the couch doing homework until she heard the garage door open. That Saturday started the same way. The parents were going to a wedding reception about 40 minutes away and expected to be gone until somewhere around 1130. Before leaving Abigail's mother went over the usual instructions, including where she had left the emergency numbers and what time the kids were supposed to be in bed. Alex had been getting over a cold, but he hadn't had a fever in several days, and seemed perfectly fine. The only thing she mentioned that Angie hadn't heard before was that Alex had recently started getting out of bed after everyone thought he was asleep. It wasn't exactly sleepwalking.
He would come into the hallway, sometimes standing at the top of the stairs for a few minutes, and then go back to bed. His mother said he usually remembered doing it the next morning, so they assumed he was simply waking up and wandering. Angie didn't think much of it. The evening went normally. The kids ate dinner, argued over which movie to watch, and spent more time negotiating bed time than actually getting ready for it. Abigail was old enough to stay up a little later, so Angie let her read in bed until 930. Alex went down closer to 9, although he came out twice for water, and once because he claimed he had forgotten to tell Angie something important about a drawing he had made at school. By 10, the upstairs was quiet. Angie settled onto the couch with her laptop and turned the television down low. She had an English paper due Monday and figured she could finish most of it before the parents returned. She had been working for perhaps 20 minutes when she heard footsteps upstairs. They were light and quick moving from one end of the hallway to the other.
Angie looked toward the stairs and waited, assuming Alex had gotten out of bed again. But after another minute passed without seeing him, she went upstairs to check. His bedroom door was open several inches when she pushed it wider. He was lying on his side with one arm tucked under his pillow, apparently asleep. Abigail's door was closed, and when Angie opened it quietly, she found her curled up under the blankets with a book resting beside her. Both children were asleep. There was nothing unusual in the hallway, so Angie went back downstairs and returned to her paper. About 10 minutes later, she heard the footsteps again, only this time they were slower. Three or four steps crossed the floor followed by a pause, then another few steps. Angie set the laptop aside and listened carefully. The sound seemed to be coming from directly above the living room, somewhere near the children's bedrooms. She waited for one of them to call her, but neither did. When the footsteps stopped, she stayed where she was. She didn't want to keep marching upstairs every time an old floor board creaked and the house did make noise. She had been
there enough times to know that a few minutes later, something rolled across the floor upstairs. Angie heard the faint plastic rattle followed by the sound of something bumping against the baseboard. This time she went upstairs immediately. Both children were still asleep. There was something in the hallway, though. A small red ball was sitting near the top of the stairs, and Angie recognized it immediately. Alex had been playing with it earlier, tossing it against the wall, despite being told several times to stop. She was fairly certain she had seen him put it in the toy basket downstairs before bed. She picked it up and carried it with her as she checked the bedrooms again. Alex had it moved and Abigail was still asleep. When Angie stepped back into the hallway, she looked toward the room at the far end. It had once been a bedroom, but the family used it as a playroom now. The door was open, which wasn't unusual, but the light inside was on. Angie couldn't remember whether it had been on earlier, though she thought she would have
noticed it when she first came upstairs. She walked down the hallway and switched it off. As she turned away, she heard Alex speaking from his bedroom. Angie went to his door and found him sitting up, looking sleepy, but awake. She asked if he was all right, and Alex nodded, but then he looked past her into the hallway. His expression changed enough that Angie turned expecting Abigail to be standing behind her. The hallway was empty. When Angie asked what was wrong, Alex hesitated before telling her that somebody had been in the playroom. She assumed he meant Abigail, but he shook his head and said it was a little boy. Angie smiled and told him he had probably been dreaming, but Alex became more awake as he insisted he hadn't been asleep when he saw him. The boy had been standing in the playroom doorway, and she asked what he looked like. Alex thought about it for a moment and said only that the boy was about his size. She tucked him back into bed and left the hallway light on. Before leaving the room,
she asked whether he had ever seen the boy before. Alex nodded. Alex had recently started getting out of bed and standing in the hallway. Angie asked him why. This time, Alex answered without hesitation. He said he was waiting for the boy to go back into the playroom. Angie stayed in Alex's room for another few minutes, trying not to make too much of what he had said. Five year olds had imaginary friends, strange dreams, and ways of turning ordinary shadows into something much bigger. And she didn't want to frighten him by acting as though she believed there really was another child in the house. She asked how long he had been seeing the boy. Alex said he didn't know only that the boy sometimes came out of the playroom after everyone went to bed. He never came into Alex's bedroom and he rarely spoke. Most of the time, he simply stood in the hallway or walked toward the stairs until Alex got out of bed. That explained why his parents had been finding him awake in the hall, but it left Angie with a question.
She wasn't sure she wanted answered. She asked whether the boy ever went downstairs. Alex shook his head and said the boy wasn't supposed to. When Angie asked who had told him that, expecting Alex to say his mother or father, he looked toward the hallway and quietly told her the boy she had. Angie decided that was enough conversation for the moment. She tucked the blankets around him, told him there was nobody in the hallway now and promised she would stay downstairs until his parents came home. She left his door open and the hall light on then checked Abigail before heading back toward the stairs. Abigail was awake sitting against the headboard and looking toward her doorway. Angie assumed the voices had disturbed her, but when she apologized, Abigail asked whether Alex had been talking about the boy again. Angie stopped and asked what boy she meant. Abigail looked uncomfortable and said Alex had been talking about some little boy in the playroom for a while. Their parents thought it was an imaginary friend, although Alex never talked about him during the day.
According to Abigail, he only mentioned him at night. When Angie asked whether she had ever seen him, Abigail hesitated before saying no, but she admitted that she had heard someone in the playroom after bedtime. Their parents always assumed it was Alex and most of the time Abigail did too. The problem was that on at least two occasions, she had heard footsteps in the hallway while Alex was asleep in the room across from hers. That made Angie considerably less comfortable. She asked why Abigail had never told her parents, Abigail shrugged and said she had, but there hadn't been much to tell. She had never actually seen anyone and by morning, the noises never seemed as important as they had during the night. Angie understood that better than she wanted to. She told Abigail to try to get some sleep and went downstairs, but she left more lights on than before. The laptop stayed closed on the coffee table. Instead of working on her paper, Angie sat on the couch listening to every sound from upstairs for nearly half an hour, nothing happened. Then she
heard the playroom door close. It wasn't a slam. The door moved slowly enough that Angie could hear the hinges first followed by the soft click of the latch. She knew she had left it open after turning off the light and for several seconds she remained on the couch hoping one of the children would call out and give her an ordinary reason to go upstairs. Neither did. Eventually she climbed the stairs and looked down the hallway. Both bedroom doors were open exactly as she had left them, but the playroom door was closed. Angie walked toward it and put her hand on the knob. Before opening it, she checked on Alex and Abigail. Both appeared to be asleep again. The playroom itself looked normal when she opened the door. It was small and crowded with toys, shelves, and a low table covered with crayons and construction paper. Nothing seemed disturbed. The overhead light was still off and the only illumination came from the hallway behind her. Angie stood there for a moment feeling increasingly foolish. There was nowhere for anyone to hide except the small closet. She refused to entertain
the idea that some stranger had been inside the house all evening without making more noise. She checked the closet anyway. It was empty. As she turned to leave, she noticed the red ball on the floor beside the low table. Angie stared at it and looked down at the identical red ball she was still holding from earlier. For a moment, she wondered whether Alex simply owned two of them. That was entirely possible and she almost laughed at herself for reacting so strongly. Still, she crossed the room and picked up the second ball. It was the same size, the same faded red with the same thin white stripe around the middle. Angie carried both balls into Alex's room and set them on the dresser. She didn't wake him to ask about them. By then, she had already decided that the moment his parents returned, she was going to tell them exactly what had happened. When she stepped back into the hallway, Abigail was standing in her doorway and she nearly jumped. Abigail whispered
that she had heard the playroom door and she told her everything was fine and asked her to go back to bed but Abigail didn't move. Instead, she looked past Angie toward Alex's room and asked where the other boy was. Angie felt her stomach tighten. She asked why Abigail would say that if she had never seen him. Abigail kept staring down the hall. After a moment, she said she hadn't seen him before tonight. Angie turned toward the far end of the hallway. At first, she saw only the open doorway to Alex's bedroom and the dim light from the hall. Then something moved near the playroom low enough that Angie initially thought Alex had gotten out of bed again. A small figure stepped into the hallway for one second, Angie could make out the shape of a child standing with one hand against the wall. Then the figure moved backward into the playroom. Angie ran to Alex's room. He was still in bed. She didn't stop to think about what she had seen. Angie woke him, brought both children downstairs and put them together on the couch. She locked the front
door, checked the downstairs windows and called their mother. She told her that something strange was happening and asked how soon they could get home. Their mother immediately wanted to know whether the children were all right. Angie assured her they were then tried to explain the footsteps, the playroom door and what she had just seen in the hallway. There was a long silence on the other end. When their mother finally spoke, she didn't sound confused. She asked Angie whether the little boy had been standing near the playroom. Angie said, yes, another pause followed. Then their mother told her not to let Alex go back upstairs. Angie didn't ask what Alex's mother meant. She was too focused on the two children sitting beside her on the couch. And on the fact that she could still hear an occasional creek from somewhere upstairs. She told their mother that Alex and Abigail were both with her and promised they would stay downstairs until the parents got home. After the call ended, Angie turned on nearly every light on the first floor. She found a movie for the kids and tried to
act calmer than she felt. Alex had pressed against one end of the couch with a blanket pulled over his legs while Abigail kept looking toward the staircase. She was beginning to understand why his parents might have tried to dismiss the whole thing as an imaginary friend. About 10 minutes later, they heard footsteps in the hallway above them. Angie looked toward the ceiling. Abigail heard them too. She moved closer to her brother without saying anything. The footsteps crossed slowly from one side of the second floor to the other, paused and then started back. Angie knew where both children were. She also knew the house was locked. For the first time that night, she seriously considered taking the kids to her own house three doors down. The only thing that stopped her was knowing their parents were already on the way and not wanting to have them arrive to an empty house. Then something rolled across the upstairs floor and she recognized the sound immediately. A ball, she looked toward the staircase,
but nothing came down. Several minutes later, headlights swept across the front windows. Alex and Abigail's parents came through the door almost immediately and their mother went straight to the children while their father asked Angie what had happened. Angie told them everything from the beginning. She described the footsteps, the red ball, Alex's comments about the little boy, Abigail seeing the figure, and finally the child. She had watched step backward into the playroom. Neither parent interrupted her. That bothered Angie almost as much as what had happened upstairs. When she finished, Alex's mother admitted that this wasn't the first time something strange had happened near the playroom. The problems had started several months earlier around the same time Alex began talking about a boy who came out after bedtime. At first, they had treated it exactly the way Angie had. Alex was five. An imaginary friend didn't seem unusual, especially one connected to a room full of toys. Then his mother had seen someone. She had been folding laundry in the upstairs
hallway one evening when a small figure moved past the playroom doorway. She only saw it for a second and assumed it was Alex. She called to him, but he didn't answer. When she walked into the playroom, no one was there. Alex had been downstairs with his father. She had convinced herself she'd seen a or misjudged something moving in the room. A few weeks later, his father heard a child running down the upstairs hallway while both Alex and Abigail were sitting with him in the living room. He checked the second floor and found nothing. After that, the parents began taking Alex's stories more seriously, but neither wanted to frighten the children by suggesting there might actually be something in the house. Angie asked why they hadn't said anything to her before leaving. His mother looked embarrassed and said that until that night, nothing had ever seemed threatening. The noises were occasional and Alex never said the boy heard him or frightened him. Most of the time, he talked about him the way a child might talk about another kid who sometimes
came over to play. That had changed recently. A few nights earlier, Alex had come into his parents' room and said the boy wanted him to come into the playroom after everyone was asleep. That was why his mother had mentioned Alex getting out of bed before they left. She hadn't told Angie the rest because she still wasn't sure whether she believed any of it herself. Angie asked Alex if that was true, he nodded. Then he said something none of them expected. The boy wanted him to stay there. His father immediately went upstairs. Angie didn't follow him and neither did the children. They stayed in the living room while he checked every room and closet. When he came back down, he said no one was there, but the playroom light was on. Angie knew she had turned it off. Before leaving, she gave the parents the two red balls she'd placed on Alex's dresser. His father looked at them for several seconds before saying Alex only owned one. That was the detail Angie remembered most clearly afterward.
The family stopped using the playroom that night. For the next several weeks, Alex slept in Abigail's room and their parents moved most of the toys downstairs. They eventually emptied the playroom completely and turned it into a storage room, although Alex refused to go inside even during the day. Angie didn't babysit there again for a while. It wasn't because the parents stopped asking. She simply wasn't ready to spend another night alone in the house. She still saw the family regularly because they lived so close and over the next few months, she occasionally asked how things were going. The footsteps became less frequent after the playroom was emptied, but they didn't stop completely. Alex also stopped getting out of bed at night. Then one morning, his mother called Angie and told her they had decided to move. There hadn't been one dramatic final incident. Instead, there had been a series of smaller things they could no longer comfortably explain. The playroom door continued opening after they closed it. Toys, they had moved downstairs occasionally
turned up in the upstairs hallway and both parents had heard footsteps when the children were asleep. The final decision came after Alex woke his mother one night and told her the boy was angry because nobody played with him anymore. The family moved several months later. Angie helped them pack but never went into the old playroom unless someone else was upstairs with her. By then, the room was nearly empty and nothing unusual happened while they were moving. On the family's last afternoon in the house, Angie was downstairs helping Abigail carry a box toward the front door when Alex came down from the second floor. His mother asked what he'd been doing upstairs and Alex said he'd gone to say goodbye and nobody asked who he meant. Years later, Angie still doesn't know what she saw in that hallway. She never learned anything about a child dying in the house and the family never found a story that explained who the boy might have been. In some ways, she was glad. What stayed with her wasn't a name or history. It was the memory of watching a child-sized figure step
backward into that playroom while Alex slept only a few feet away. And the knowledge that before anyone else believed him, Alex had already been getting out of bed night after night for one simple reason. He was waiting for the other boy to go away.
