Claire FM. Welcome to the latest episode of Claire FM's Road Safety Initiative. In today's episode we will hear from Mike McGraw of Safeway Tires NS. Mike shares advice and tips on tire safety. The legal limit for your tires for all road users is 1.6 millimeters. Now that's not very much. If you're wondering, well, how am I going to know that on my tire whether my tire has reached that or not, on the side wall of your tire up near the shoulder, you'll see a little thing called a TWI will be written on it. It stands for tread wear indicator. And if you follow that across the tread on your tire, you'll see a little bridge. And that bridge, when your tread bars wear level with that bridge, then your tire is at 1.6 millimeters. Now, ideally, summertime, not a problem, but wintertime when we get a lot more water on the road, what I'd say to people is if you do a lot of country road driving or motorway driving,

maybe consider replacing those tires at 2 millimeters. It's not a big difference, but it will get a lot more water out from under your tire and make your tire more responsive and safer. If you're not sure, and this really isn't something that you do, well, then call into your local ITIA specialist, Safeway Tires in the Market or any tire center, and they'll do a free tire check and be able to tell you exactly where you stand and roughly based on your mileage how long you have left before you need to replace your tires. Also, another thing there is a four-season tire available in the Irish Marketplace for the last number of years. And because we're coming into autumn winter, where we may get snow, frost, sleet under roads, four-season tire offers a higher level of safety than a standard summer tire would be. It doesn't react to temperature, and it gives you better grip on bad roads. That's also an option that you could look at if you want to make yourself as safe as possible.

That was Mike McGraw of Safeway Tires, NS. In the next episode, we will hear from Artnecrosse Fienfaule, a member of Clare County Council Road Safety Working Group, Rachel Hartigan. This feature ClareFem's Road Safety Initiative is funded by Commissioner Mann with the news reporting scheme.
