Welcome to a few good minutes before the Jaguars host the Patriots in a big week green showdown at Everbank Stadium. I'm Brian Sexton and this week I caught up with offensive line coach Sean Cerett to talk about a group that has to play well on Sunday for the Jaguars to give themselves a chance to knock off the defending AFC champions who are bringing a big physical defensive front that trashed the Steelers offensive line last week. And I don't think I've ever seen that before. We're also going to hear defensive line coach Matt Edwards talk about a group that has to find a way to keep New England quarterback Drake May in the pocket and also Karau running back Travion Henderson who gashed the Steelers defensive line. Plus running back Chris Rodriguez as it made a huge impact in Jacksonville yet.
But he's very happy with the decision he made to join forces with Bay Sheldon in the Jaguars backfield and Fred Taylor. Well, he has a lot to say this week about Travis Hunter and the Jaguars ability to rebound from their loss in Denver. But let's start with Parker Washington with this time last year was an easy interview in the Jaguars locker room. Literally no one was waiting by his locker after practice. Now, well, let's just say I had to work to get a few good minutes with the Jaguars most explosive weapon through two games. You're the center of attention right now. Is that fun for you? Is it a distraction for you? I mean, with your personality, I get admit, I think maybe you're enjoying it a little bit. I mean, that's never been my focus. It's just I just want to be the best team I can be. I'll just come here and just have fun. And that's ultimately what I've been doing and has been paying off for me just staying focused and not paying attention to the noise. You have made play after play after play after play. It's gotten to the point where we're surprised when you don't make a play.
When did that start? Late last year? I mean, it's just your level of consistency is off the charts right now. I feel like we can go all the way back in time and like when it started like we can go back to college. I feel like I've always believed in myself to be that guy. It's just I had to wait for my time and just when I got here as a rookie, learn from teammates in front of me that I was doing that I was playing at a high level and just being a sponge and that receiver room and just continuing to attack the practice so that if I was getting those opportunities each week and I feel like now I'm starting to get those opportunities so just making the most of it and I just want to have some fun out there and take it one play at a time. Do you do any different training? Don't be offended but you look like a gymnast out there. I mean the way that you explode off the turf to go grab the ball the way that you dive to get it. I mean, you ever done gymnastics? You do karate or do you do anything that's different that gets you ready to play the way that you do? I always say nothing special. You know, obviously we in the weight room, standing shape is real important.
Getting a lot of sleep is real important and ultimately just coming out here and just being Parker, you know, and just me and me and I feel like I was blessed to have these gifts and it's just been the big thing and my process is putting the work in and you're nothing without the work so I just hone in on that and that's ultimately what it is just putting the time in. Pick up the phone and ask your sister what she thinks. How does she grade you? She's going to say don't be a scrub. Don't be a scrub. That's her. We always laugh and when we talk on the phone and ultimately like that's a big piece just going out there and just hone in on my process, taking it one day at a time, one rep at a time and just being the best of me. You have 12 targets far more than anyone else. There's been some talk this week about spreading the wealth. Are you good with that? Are you good with being playing your part or do you like to see 12 targets? Let's just get the win. It's all that matters, isn't it? Let's just get the win. Your relationship with Trevor, I mean he just smiles whenever people ask about you.
When did that turn on and does it just keep getting better or do you have to work at it every day? You got to work at it each and every day and you know continue to make plays on the practice field and make plays on the game and as far as just when it happened or when it's just being the same being me each and every day and ultimately just waiting my time to be the person I know I can be, the player I know I can be and just going out to the ham fun. Let's just wrap on this then. Everyone marvels at how you're able to separate the business side from the football side. And essentially bet on yourself. Was that a difficult decision? Did you make it all by yourself and do you still stand by it? I just want to go out here and just play ball. That's been my mindset this whole time and you know just letting everything else work itself out. But ultimately we have a job to do this week. We've got to go one and only. That's all I'm supposed to do. The Jack O'Rochney Fence of Line is a talented group. But last week in Denver, while they control the running game as we've grown to expect that they will week to week, they struggled to get a quarterback, Bo Nix, and they left Colorado
dissatisfied with their performance. Kai Stevens caught up with defensive line coach Matt Edwards who owns a commanding presence among some of the biggest men on the field and who worked all week on the little details that oftentimes in professional football make all the difference. Here with Jack O'Rochney Fence of Line coach Matt Edwards, heading into week three in week one saw a ton of success against Cleveland in Denver not so much. When you look back at that Broncos game, what stood out to you? What do you really want to work on going into this week? I think that's a great question. I think the thing that we always want to work on is just dominating our one-on-one matchups, running with our fundamentals, and then putting our identity and our playstyle on display, and that's being the most physical unit, the most relentless unit, and playing within the defense, but taking advantage of our opportunities to impact the game. Forgive me if this is a basic question, but we talk about one-on-ones, Josh Enzallon and Terminal Walker.
They're some of the most doubled guys in the league, right? What is the work around for that? This may be a very basic question, so forgive me, but is there different ways to approach that or is it just taking advantage because there's one extra guy going on them? Yeah, I think that there's things that we try to do to help those guys in those situations. I think we need to practice those situations. One, it's to a certain extent, it's an honor for those guys to be doubled. Obviously they're on the radar of the opponents that we're playing, but at the end of the day our job is to produce. So it doesn't matter if there's one guy on us or two guys on us or three guys on us. Our job's to impact the game. So we've got to find unique ways to drill that. We've got to find some creative ways to get them away from some of those double teams, which I won't get into the schematics of it. But I think we're all working together to try to achieve the same goal and that's to put them in position to impact the game. When you look at back at both weeks, you see success in one week, maybe not so much
the next week. Is it difficult? You don't want to overreact of course, but it is a week to week game. So when you look back at film like that, how much of it is taking you with a grain of salt when you're going up against a great team like Denver and then also staying within yourself going forward? I think regardless of the opponent, you kind of take that away. I think there's going to be games where there's plays that you wish you had back. Maybe some split second decisions that you make or something you could have done or should have done. And we're always just working together to get on the same page and fix and improve and enhance anything that we're doing well just so we can continue to take advantage of those opportunities. Our goal is we want to be disciplined but opportunistic. Right? I'm not talking about being patient. I'm talking about being disciplined because your opponent might come on the first play of the game and we got to take advantage of it. That's kind of what we're striving for to be disciplined but we got to take advantage of ops because you don't know when they're going to show up which means we got to be going
all the time. When you look ahead to the Patriots, what do they do well and what is it of concern with Drake May when maybe he's trying to get outside and scramble is that something you're focusing on? You know, I have a history with the staff there. Obviously I've worked for Mike Vrayble. I worked for Josh McDaniel's. They're a disciplined group. They're trying to instill toughness in their program and I respect what they're trying to do. It's a lot of the same things that we want to do here as far as being the most physical team on the field that day. Drake May is a great player. He certainly presents some challenges with his legs and kind of his play style but we just got to make sure that we're all on the same page and just playing really well connected as a front to do our job to do what we need to do to have success in the game. The little things you guys want to play wherever play anybody at any time but it is nice to be home once in a while especially this time of year. Do you have to use that to your advantage a bit especially when this team is going to be on the road a ton back end of the season?
Yeah, I mean we're not thinking about anything on the back end of the season. All we're thinking about is what the job is this week and that starts with what our job is tomorrow in practice. So we're kind of setting our minds on going out and having a great practice tomorrow and then we'll worry about the day after that and then when the game comes obviously playing at home in front of our fans as always it's a privilege. It's a privilege to get to play at home and we want to make sure we're putting the best possible product out on the field that everybody here in Jacksonville is a community and a city can be proud of. Thanks, thank you. You're welcome, Cindy. Thank you very much. The big guys on the offensive side of the ball weren't much happier this week. The running game was okay but they don't settle for okay in Jacksonville and it seems everyone took their turn making a mistake in past protection against an outstanding Broncos defensive front that harassed quarterback Trevor Lawrence all afternoon long. I really appreciate Jaguars offensive line coach Sean Cerett who does an excellent job
explaining what's going on up front. He's been busy since training can't begin in late July with a major decision at left tackle or rookie at left guard and plenty of other moves along the line that craves consistency but hasn't had it. I referred to you affectionately as the ringmaster in August because you had a five ring circus with all the injuries that you had to deal with and trying to get guys settled in new spots on the offensive line and trying to work everybody through. How did that process work to your betterment? How does it help you to have been through that in August with all the moves and machinations you had to have? It's funny you say that it's actually a lot easier in August when you say that and a lot of people think man in training camp but it really is the bullets are not flying like they are just like I just told those guys a few minutes ago. I mean come Sunday it's different than on practice and it truly is. And then we got a callous our minds for that but the idea of that was our lineman and our room they have to be able to be flexible with other spots.
You just can't be an all pro at one spot. I want them to be all pro at multiple spots if they can. So it's the idea of like we only get seven to eight guys on game day. I came up in a world ten years ago where you were kind of holding on to yourself. You had one backup for inside one backup for outside so you want to cheat these guys to play multiple spots and be able to go in and perform what needs to be done. So how does that help prepare a guy like Jonah Monheim who's not starting right now but who might have to play at some point you to Robert gets beat up and has to go in for a couple of places. How does it help a guy like him or why at mylam who might have to play in the second half of a game because Covalen and speed up. Yeah I mean it's growing it's growing for them and it truly is and that's the thing. They're taking the steps not only in games but they're doing it here at practice. You know they're taking reps in the show team and then coming back overtaking reps with the ones you know going against our show team and it's good for me because what's great about is they have to do all this and still get ready for the game so they can be working
on a totally different defense, our defense and then they have to be ready for like a defense like the Patriots who's a different defense. You know we're a four down team where there are three, four team. How do you use a week that doesn't go the way that you want it to get sharp for the next week? Well I always say to them you know I'm like this is an important week and why is it important because it's the next week. It truly is you got to have a short memory in the NFL you know when it comes down to it because guess what there's 16 more, 15 more whatever it may be you know and then playoffs you know I mean it's just the nature of it. You want to be one of those teams in the playoffs you got to have a short memory because the next week's coming either you're ready or not. You got to let go of what happened and we got to move on to the next one. Sally always likes to talk about how a defensive lineman can wait make a mistake at a critical moment but you don't know just catch it. But an offensive lineman right make one mistake and it shows up everywhere. It's about having a short memory. Are offensive lineman finally conditioned to that or is that something that you have to work on with them?
No you do have to work on with them and even me saying that I can still tell they carry stuff with them. It's just like me I mean I ain't a lot to you. I go home. I'm still carrying stuff from 10 years ago. I mean I go home some nights and be trying to go to sleep and I'm like I think about I'm like man wish I had that one back you know and it's just that's part of it you know but just like he said you got to have that short memory and you got to be able to get transition into the next one because it's coming. Sean you smiled when I mentioned Bacelli's name. How does it help you? What's it like to have the executive vice president of football operations be a hall of fame offensive tackle and you know that he's around your guys he's paying attention because it's what he does. Well I mean what else could you ask for here in this building you know a guy that's a gold jacket player and a gold jacket person you know he you know if you got questions for him. I have a question I'm going to go to him and I tell my players as well why not that guy's been through it you know and he's a guy that you can lean on. How's Anton done making the move from right tackle to left tackle. People know he played left tackle in college but he hadn't done that in the NFL.
How's that going? It's going well you know the transition over there really wasn't bothersome for him you know he's showing his athleticism and all that and which has really helped us. How about a manual pregnant on playing next to him. He's a rookie and I don't know that anybody expected him to be in that spot but he earned it. How's that chemistry going with Hansey and with with Anton. It's going well you know and that's the thing like even Anton gets involved with that the chemistry that side they're communicating well you know and it goes back to like a tips of the hat of with with Ezra because you know Ezra was a type of guy we asked him to move the right guard and he didn't he didn't bat an eye. He was a type of guy said yeah no problem because we wanted to make the transition a little bit easier for the rookie you know a guy that had been in that position the left guard spot in college you know just said transition to him over. I remember talking to you last year about Cole when Cole had started a couple of different spots in the admiration you had for him. How about what he's done to get back. I mean it wasn't even eight months rehabilitation and he gets back into the lineup.
Your thoughts on what it takes to do that and how he's playing. Yeah it's a tip of the hat to him man you know and I'm still talking to him like hey take it easy. Because you just like you just said eight months ACL repair you worry about that and but you know he's the type of guy that goes out and performs every day and he does it at a high level you know he's in the training room he's doing everything he can that you know make sure that thing's healthy and you know he's done a great job for us. I want to ask you about the running game because I know it was an area of focus because last year it fell off in the last six games. Do you like where it's at right now what do you need to see not just today against the Patriots but going forward to know that it's something that'll be consistent for you. Well it's the reason why you know it's made made a points because Coach Cohen wants to run the ball you know and Brian Bakucci has been brought in as the run coordinator and he's done a great job as well you know and just all of us in there figuring that out and we just want to continue to improve date week to week you know we like last year we were running the ball well and then all of a sudden it was a drop off. Because people might not know this what does a run game coordinator do.
He actually well just like I said he's coordinating the runs but it's all of our thoughts you know and that's something like you know you said there and just like you know with the grant you know he's the he's the offensive coordinator but it's everybody's thoughts within the group and he's got to take the ones he thinks are the best and then he's got to take those ideas and he can like put some to his thoughts put some to his formations and then we gel it all together and then shows up on Sunday which that's kind of crazy what people don't realize how much works actually put into this they just see the finished product on Sunday and they think oh wow okay but they don't realize the hours these guys put in and so forth and so on to get there. If you took all the people that are in this building and all the hours they work I think people would be blown away by what it takes to get ready for a game day. Yes yes there does I mean I know there and another guy too you know he's Trevor Mendelsson you know he's a guy you know he's a system of line coach force he's a guy that's doing all the drawings he's a guy breaking all the film I mean he's in here hours upon hours you know and just like you said
it's those small guys in those positions that make this machine run offensive line coaches I know grind I always used to hear from Paul Boudreau about the mushroom society but I want to get a global perspective on this you we're a couple weeks into this now you've been here for more than a year just the overall energy with this football team it feels Sean when I when I'm just around this group they really like playing with one another they like what they're doing and they feel good about the direction you guys are headed do you see it that way yeah I do you know even in our room I mean that's the thing they have to gel with one another you know and I always say to them you know we all we're all different personalities in this room but we all got to have the common culture you know the idea of that common goal and they understand that because the all of them are different just like the coaches the three coaches are in there and they see it we all are in there we're all presenting we're all different way all different how we present stuff you know and I think it's a good little click together and that's something that it helps them because one way I say something that may give you completely different how Trevor says it or how BP says it so it's
really good thanks for the insight I appreciate go get them today yeah appreciate you guys we'll see out there running back Chris Rodriguez is a hammer in the Jaguars offense of backfield he's the big body that's going to move the pile and keep the Jaguars offense moving when they really need to first down but when he leaves the Miller Electric Center these days and heads for home he has to leave that hammer persona behind for something more akin to a teddy bear I'll let him explain how's the adjustment you were washing to start your career now you're in Jacksonville does take a little bit of getting used to how's it been honestly it's been good I guess the biggest part I would say is the heat I mean then you got the football side of things new offense but I'm familiar with it because of college and you know we're still adjusting every day every day is better than the the previous and Rodriguez gonna keep building the adjustment isn't just here it's at home too because it's not just you you have a family yeah how's their adjustment been uh honestly it's it's I would say it's it's tough but only because it's not just moving my wife here we moved here
and we had a baby you know we had our first child um she is 12 weeks now so obviously that's been the biggest adjustment outside of football but um you know it's a blessing and me and my wife are attacking that head on tell me about the attacking process I bet you can't wait to get home oh I mean you know I love my baby you know um talking to a mirror about you know how it was when he had his baby while he was in a league uh you know he just told me like you know you're gonna play free you know you got a bigger purpose now and you're gonna feel so loose when you're out there and I do and then at home I mean you know it's it's a lot of adjusting it's caring for the baby and the dogs and making sure we're doing enough for our little girl um and you know she's young she's adjusting to a new a new place you know so we're taking it day by day and we're figuring out new things and I'm thankful that I have a good uh crew around me that have kids and you know uh people that
I can talk to like Dennis Kardec or Amir or Trevor or Jacobi you know those guys just a name a few uh you know they they've been through it so they helped him around on the outside this locker room is a pretty special place I mean there's a lot of really good human beings and if that isn't always the case no no no not at all I mean just the name of you I mean Jacobi I met Jacobi in Britain strange I met um a couple years ago you know um just through outside training and uh Jacobi was always one of those kids who were down there you know I I thought you know he's this guy who he's getting paid a lot he might not be as cool as I think he is but man I talked to him in strange and man those guys have led me in the right path especially being in a new place um they've they've been tremendous help oh and Trayvon Trayvon was there as well um may it man those guys once they figured out um that I will be here you know Trevor or Trayvon he got my number he saved and it takes me if you need anything same for strange and Jacobi tell me
about this week can you come up with loss people are disappointed they have a locker room like this makes that process easier doesn't it yeah I mean 100% I mean you know it's it's only week two you know it's uh there's no time to hang your heads um we know what it's gonna take you know and as soon as we came out of that game it was how can we adjust and attack that next week knowing what we didn't accomplish in last week's prep um so getting back you know we obviously we watch the game that next day and just flush it you know um this time to move on and uh there's a another opponent who played in the Super Bowl last year uh same team or not they were in the Super Bowl so obviously they they know what it takes to be there their coaching staff know it takes to be there and you know we got to go out and prove ourselves you know how difficult is it to play a big game against what you just said the defending AFC champs coming off a loss right
how difficult is it just to stay in the moment did not not think about what's next or what happened before yeah I mean again at the end of the day it's it's our prep you know um we know we're capable of a lot of good things but the only thing holding us back are the minor details um because at the end of the day like everybody has a good team they have high paid players or whatever the case may be the the difference between the teams at play at the end of the year and are done in January is the little details everybody's going to be physical everybody's going to play hard but it's the little details how can we execute our details at a high level better than them and do the details become more magnified more focused upon in a week when you didn't have success the week before does everybody dial in on them uh I mean I think so as a running back group um they were small details that we thought we were hitting in the game but we weren't once we watched uh once we watched the film and uh again I mean all details are they're all small no matter
small or big detail is just asking you to take care of and whether you dial in or not the coaches are going to dial in on it so you're sure you're going to hear about it they brought you here to fix the running game to help that you weren't here last year so it's tough to make a comparison but do you feel like the running game is making progress and going in the direction you wanted to go um yeah I would say so I mean I won't ever say anything bad about our running game you know um I think that we know what we can do as a running back group and a lot of us kind of not even I wouldn't say a lot of us me instead of doing my job I'm always trying to be two steps ahead which that's not the way it needs to be I gotta be patient and let the game kind of come to me instead of just attacking ahead on you know um I feel like I've been in a rush my last two games because I challenged myself to play fast but at the end of the day just going back to square one reading my keys uh being tight on the details and uh at the end of the day playing fast will help me
maybe it's because the Maxwell House plant is that way and there's a Maxwell House coffee can behind you is there a story with that is it and can you share it oh uh yeah there was uh our media crew went around yesterday and they asked us um tea or coffee and um I think it's like uh well I like coffee so I have an espresso machine at my house uh me and my wife both love coffee not really big tea drinkers um and when I told them coffee they just handed me a Maxwell all right uh little container so if you've seen the plant you know it's down the street uh haven't seen it but I you can smell it during a camp when I first got here I was like you know what's that smell and they said oh that's a coffee house or coffee whatever it is it's a side benefit signing with the Jags you get the coffee smell in the morning exactly and it helps a lot I tell you that best a lot today yes sir thank you we finished with one of my favorites bread Taylor understands the week-to-week nature of the national football league better than most we talked this week about the big stories surrounding
the Jaguars Bryant Thomas Jr. Travis Hunter and rebounding from a disappointing performance in Denver last Sunday 14 teams of one and one in the Jaguars would like to rise with the group that goes to two in one uh they're back home where they've won four to row posted a seven one record last year which matches your team from 1999 for the best single season home record in Jaguars history and you just expect that this football team coming home is going to come home a little bit angry that's what we've been hearing from coaches and players this week they're a little angry with their performance and I'm told that their practice has been outstanding this week yeah no it's it's cool to be angry but it's something that they're you know the angry Bryant and not be able to control your emotions because anger can easily lead to frustrations if things don't go as expected or naturally as you know if things don't go your way so you have to be careful in that sense when
you're when you're talking angry now if they're sharp and focused and just ready to forget about last week knowing they had an opportunity to walk away with a win that that's another thing so you know we're gonna look at how this game starts whether it's fast or if it's just you know sort of kind of methodical and I want to see how they respond you know I want to see how how they look straight out in the gate if they're going to be fired you know if they're going to you know be focused on catching the balls they're supposed to catch during their assignments but more importantly unlike what we saw last week Bryant finished starting fast is great but are you able to finish listen is that just part of the maturation of a young football team that you learn this is a week-to-week league and not to let the frustration carry over be able to get back and start fresh on Wednesday when you return to the facility you know I think that's when leadership has this step up you know veteran leadership in a locker room the coaching leadership the things the
messages that they're displaying throughout the week and just being able to be poised you know that's what the the standards one thing but the culture that they've tried to establish there and the identity that they've been building is one of that you know let's not you know worry about a helicopter over the previous week let's move forward our mantra at the pivot is except adjust move forward we believe that's what the pivot is all about and this is what this team is going to have to do to show that there that team that can can make that next lead all right well one of the ways that we thought we knew this team was going to play was very physical on both the offensive and defensive lines and yet last week they got moved by the Broncos it didn't matter whether it was offensive defense so heading into week three what do you know about this group up front you know I think when you look at this Patriots team obviously in week one
they weren't able to get much pressure on Drew Luck uh after Sam Darnell went out excuse me and last week you saw uh this team they they did a total opposite uh but more importantly they were able to run the football and they did that at a high clip a week ago they had a few long runs as well so that's not going to happen against this Jaguar's team this team is going to go back get back to basics because a year ago they were number one against the one that run they pride themselves to be able to stop the run first make teams one dimensional and then allow those amazing defensive ends and Josh Allen and Trava and Walker an opportunity to get after the passer and uh you know I believe the Patriots have a young quarterback that's you know he's very good quarterback but if you put pressure on Drake May it'll make some mistakes so minimize the the run game it's going show that you can stop the run early and now in passing situations when you know you're
supposed to to win you gotta go out and execute and win. Brad I'm told by some folks in the building that the key to beating this Patriots offense is to keep Drake May in the pocket to make him play quarterback they're running essentially the same offense that you once ran when you were with the Patriots the same one that Tom Brady ran just he's not quite Tom Brady your thoughts on the Jaguar keeping him in the pocket and his ability when he gets out on the run. Yeah it goes back to discipline what Tom Brady was great at he was great at shuffling right in that little box Tom the defense advanced to go past him so he can step up slide and make his throws this is what made him great young quarterbacks they tend to panic when that pressure is you know zoom in past they they will step up but then they're looking to run Tom was never that and I do believe it you can get pressure up and then also push the pocket in up the middle then you give yourself an opportunity Drake May again like I say he's a young guy but he's mobile he has great legs great running
ability and he can throw on the outside when he's running same thing Trevor Lawrence can do but you want to try your best to be disciplined and your lane assignment get pressure but make sure you understand that they're going to be times when you have to retrace and after you force him to step so he doesn't play the lateral game outside the pocket. All right Fred one of the things I like most about where you are in your career right now is you can give us the global perspective from a league-wise if you as well as the Jaguar's perspective so give me your thoughts on Travis Hunter it's become a conversation some would call it noise outside the building that he's not playing well that he's not playing enough snaps the Jaguars aren't aren't developing right the facts are that he will start his tenth game play his tenth NFL game on Sunday against the Patriots he won't pull season until the Sunday before Thanksgiving when he faces the New York Giants so just really getting started your thoughts on Travis Hunter the conversation
if not controversy you know I think it's it's it's it's chatter it's the conversation it comes with football it comes with being a number two overall pick the expectations are you know through the through the stratosphere um Travis what Travis have to do is Travis have to find a way to you know not pay attention to the noise I think you go back a week ago you look at a defense of past interference I thought it was good coverage I believe they call him for the the shield that the phrase guard and pretty much putting his hand up saying hey I got this guy covered along the way he's going to understand that he can't guard like this he's going to have to just cover the guy and defend and play the ball and not necessarily uh uh play the receiver and he'll learn that over time so I thought that was a good play he'll continue to build in his reps uh I don't believe anyone cares about the fact that he's only played ten games especially when you're drafted number two uh as you
recall in 98 I was a ninth pick I came around a little slower but by the tenth game of my rookie year Brian I was damn near close to a thousand yards you were on your way I was probably six or 700 yards at least 700 yards on my way to becoming a team's first thousand yard russia so no one cares that he's only played ten games he's out there they want him to be productive and make plays and that's that's what the coach is going to uh want that's what the fans are going to want the players around NFL it's going to want that from Travis and I'm sure Travis wants that but it comes with repetition so um I don't know man and I've heard the noise I heard why is any out there on these snaps and this I don't know like the coaches know there's the only ones that have an answer to why is he in and why isn't he in until they say something I'm just a fly on the wall where I would love to be on the wall actually I'm just outside the building I don't know I really
don't know I love to know to your point about rookies producing what Brian Thomas Jr. was a rookie he produced ten touchdowns twelve hundred yards 84 catches he's the other story this week and and to me it's not about it is always about the drops right especially the drop in the second half that would have been first and 10 at the 24 I get it my point is simply that the offense doesn't need to run through him anymore we have this opinion of what he is but what his production has become doesn't match what he was as a rookie you know you've got other productive receivers guys whose yards per target is much higher I mean starting with Jacobi Myers but followed by Parker Washington Josh Cameron Brenton Strange my thought is he's got to earn his time it's time for other guys to see the football yeah the coaches know I mean you can't you can't run from that camera the eye in the sky don't lie you know they see all 22 players and then when you start to create these these you know when you started to create these moments in which BTJ has dropped in the
ball showing a lot of inconsistency like he's put he's put himself on their mic microscope so not only that they're seeing the entire 22 they're looking at and critiquing him every single moment every single snap they're going back to their meetings post game and saying look these this is how he's great and right and you know that right you've been in the building and and and James glass on Tony Vaselli Liam Cohen they know like they're creating a plan around BTJ and the noise is the noise and you never know what's going to happen in those circumstances until a decision is made from within the building so BTJ he has not depressed he has to just find a way to get back to making plays whether that's in Jacksonville and I said all the time it's 31 other teams or whether it's somewhere else but if he's not making plays here it eventually is going to be somewhere else and that's just a business and I'm not knocking him I I love the kid I think he's an amazing talent
he has to get back in his zone and I'm going to always root for him no matter what is the reason he's the second most targeted and you would notice right because you and Jimmy Smith played off of each other so well the deep threat scared safeties into backing off a line of scrimmage and then yet when you got going it brought them closer to the line of scrimmage there was a given and Jimmy did his thing yeah between 28 and eight and two in the glory years of Jack Worcett football is that why he's so targeted because these coaches understand what he could possibly mean and by the way can you get it done put him to the snide are there other players on this roster who can give you that there are other players on the roster who can give you that we saw Jacobi Myers when he came the town a year ago making play after play after play we saw the emergence of parka washington after btj was sidelined with his finger his hand you know a few other injuries parka washington emerged we saw Brenton strange in a tight end position get more opportunities when btj wasn't a focal point
so this is what you know taking advantage of the opportunities mean when your numbers call and again the coaches are going to find a way to create opportunities for these guys who have shown that they are consistent that they will make plays when when there's a time to make those plays and clutch moments so you can't count them out I'm sure the defenses aren't going to sleep on them they know he's capable they just don't know when because of the inconsistency all right let's put your offensive coordinator or quarterback hat on for a second here your Trevor Lawrence and parkour washington is your most targeted threat and he is the best receiver you've got going right now but christian gonzalez is going to spend the whole day looking for number 11 do you go at it do you still try to force the ball in there christian gonzalez to my way thinking is the best quarterback in football how do you approach parkour washington and christian gonzalez today me against you hey this is why you compete you don't back down you make him make a play yeah he's great
he's the highest pay so what make him make a play a week ago uh uh uh uh pat certain junior out there he didn't get a ton of targets his way but some balls win his way like make him make a play I don't care who's out there like I don't understand that philosophy we're going to not throw at you no we're gonna we're gonna challenge you and uh even if it costs us a ball game we're not just gonna let you take a break I don't get it like maybe it's me if I were a receiver I'm coming after and I'm on my quarter back to have confidence in me yeah that's that's what chemistry is that's the way we communicate that way and parkour wants to be able to get out there and say look I've been asking for a contract I'm gonna show y'all why I need to get paid this is why I want these type of challenges and my quarterback and I we got to be on the same page when I get open the ball needs to be there that's it that's it I spent some time with him in the locker in this weekend that's
exactly parkour's mentality so let's end on this our buddy Tony Bicelli likes to say it's the most important game in the history of the franchise because it's the next one and certainly who could argue with that it's the defending aFC champions the New England Patriots coming in and it's going to be a race all season long to stay in the upper echelon of the aFC especially if you want to shot at hosting playoff games here come January and February hopefully February here's the question no yeah this is the last game they're playing here for 35 days that to that to me really adds a little bit more to it jacks as I mentioned off the top four straight home wins seven eight of their last nine they've won here it's a big game for this football team how do you suppose if you were getting ready to play at this locker room is getting ready to play at how do they see it you know I think the players the players don't necessarily buy into that part of it you know it's the next game like Tony said it's the next opponent next opportunity or the next home game yes it's
a home game you're excited to be home but I don't believe that they are looking at it from afar right they don't they're not looking at it like well we got to get this one because you know we won't be here for another month they're saying we got to get this one because this is the next one and it's a Patriot team who's a good ball club so regardless of when the next home game is this is the next home game for them and that's the post as a mentality and they got a lock-in and try to finish this one and go up to one because if they look back I think what's most important now close on this is when you look at the AFC style hat one in seven you don't look you don't see a really good conference right now or really good division right now so you can separate yourself focus on that let's not focus on 35 days away let's focus on the Patriots and why I'm in the gap in our division well there you go another episode of a few good minutes with a few good people
we'll see you Sunday for the Jaguars and Patriots our coverage begins with a public tailgate show starting at 10 o'clock Eastern time on 1010 XL and the Jaguars YouTube channel I hope the joyous go Jack
