What it was like in the middle of that celebration and what is still ahead for this Padres team who of course still has a chance to host a wildcard series based on what happens this weekend against the Diamondbacks and elsewhere in Major League Baseball, but they don't have to sweat out beating the Dbacks just to get their spot. That part is all taken care of after a four to win at Dodger Stadium. So lots of discuss. 3:05do it without further ado, the welcome music. It is the Onfire podcast brought to you by NBC seven. He is Derek Togerson. I am Darnay Trip and this is what we're hoping for Derek. I was up there on Tuesday. I was up there on Wednesday and apparently you had the magic touch on Thursday once again part of one of the champagne soak celebrations in the clubhouse of the Padres. Get it done and you've had a number of these. What will you remember about this one?

4:07Cully, it was just that this they all feel a little bit different. I will remember Jeff Herrera, by the way, like you said, being like an absolute superhero this week because he was amazing. But I'll remember just how much these guys, like everybody kind of has their little areas they go to and the guys that they can hang out with. There was no clikiness, I guess. I hope this is coming off the right way because you know, every team has. Everybody everywhere was just like, hey, come on in here. Pictures and the bullpen guys and the bench guys and the infielders and the alphabets. Everybody was together. They were all celebrating. It felt like a much more inclusive group that makes any sense. And also it's the first time I've seen the owners in there since Peter Sipa. So that was actually pretty cool. Peter was there obviously in 2022 for all of those.

5:08I mean, Juan Zayn and Jose and there was actually really nice talk to Jose a little bit. And they're stoked. So it was it was it was it was a little bit different. It was actually very, very cool. Yeah. And this does really seem like a super tight team. And you know, I think part of the hallmark is everybody contributing. And when that is the case, I think there's a little bit more involvement togetherness. Everybody pulling the right direction, the belief and the confidence in one another. And the celebration with one another and of one another. Ethan Salis being a great example. Dude's been on the team for like five and a half minutes and was probably the MVP of this series. And just watching your video and video posted elsewhere in the broadcast like he seemed at the center of it all in the sense that everybody was so happy to have him there and experiencing that and happy that he was able to contribute in the manner that he has in a 20 year old. So vital to helping kind of get them across the line here.

6:11Xander Bogar pointed that out specifically. He said the thing that he is going to remember the most about this here is the young guys did the the Samad tailors and the J's bowens and the Dustin Harris's and the Ethan soluses. And what they've been able to do to help them come together and win these games down the stretch. Nobody expected these guys to be around. I talked to Chris Camp a little bit to the scouting director and he was like we got good scouts man we find these guys and they come here and they work. Was it just like this is all the young players on this team make it even more gratifying for him and he's been through a lot of these types of celebrations with two world series championships. Really really cool. You talked about Jose and Quanza. I was able to hear a little bit of what Jose had to say. What was what was your impression. Would you take away from getting a chance to to chat with the owners who seem to be enjoying this as much as anybody. Yeah, like I said, Quanza is very much a social media darling. She was she was in the living it up.

7:11And you know, it's probably going to be a really interesting feed for her. Jose is very pragmatic and I respect that about him. And he was very much like I think he kind of let himself get into the emotion of the moment a little bit more than maybe we have seen him because I asked him is this. Is this validating or is this motivating for while you bought this team. He said this is motivating. This is motivating for why we wanted to buy this team for why we're in here doing this. For how we're going to try and he said I believe we have the ability to win a pennant and maybe even a big old ring with this team. But you could just tell that they were just living it up being in this situation. I think it was just kind of like man. Can we experience this every year. So it was it was it was really nice to see them in there just kind of kind of experiencing this for the first time and going day. This is this is might even be more fun than we realize it was going to be.

8:12Yeah, you know, as we try and figure out kind of what they're all about and how much they really want to kind of push to limit and open up their wallets. You know, hopefully like you said, this is motivating this. They'll want to chase more experiences like this and be part of more nights like this and invest in the team as such. That's really cool to see. And I think from a fan standpoint, like I think seeing them want to get involved them mixing it up, you know, beer and hand celebrating. Like having as much fun as a team as much fun as a fans. I think, you know, it's cool for fans. I think in a moment like this, just like seeing enthusiasm because you don't know like how much they're going to do. They're going to care when they just kind of swoop in by the team. What are they all about? Is this just an investment? Like again, it feels like a pair of that like really soak in these moments and want to be a part of this and want to make it special and do something cool for the fans. And when that happens, like they're going to be exuberant. They're going to let their hair down a little bit and not be afraid to enjoy it.

9:19All right. So I think we lost Derrick first. You keep you keep blanket. Sorry. What else any any other interactions with the guys? I think you spoke with AJ Preller Craig Stamman. What what else jumped out to you? Yeah, I was just like it was I mean Craig being a rookie manager. He actually has made some that's critical as I've been. He's made some really good decisions down the stretch here. So maybe he's learning from all of this stuff. AJ was just, you know, we've got a complete team. We're always striving to get a complete team. We've had complete teams in the past and I'm able to get over the hump. But this one I think is truly a complete team. We can really do some damage in the postseason. Ruben Niebler said this is one of the more challenging seasons that he's had. And being able to put this team together with the bullpen that they have is just the consistency that they're able to work with and work through.

10:24It makes them especially with the way that baseball is played in the postseason these days. Makes them a very very dangerous team. So it was the older writing word that everyone kept saying was special. This group is special. And even by guys who have been in there for every single one of these celebrations. The Fernando Tati's juniors and many machados of the world who have been here for the first time. The world who have been here for all of them. They had two of mad also. This one, this one is is a little bit unique. This team just feels a little different and it feels like they've got something really special cooking. Three straight years, man. Three straight years. Imagine, you know, as terrible as 2023 was, you know, if somebody told you at that point, you know, we're going to be heading in in 2027 and the podgers would not miss another playoff appearance. And five playoff appearances and seven years going back to 2020. I mean, it's, it's incredible. And we all know like the ultimate goal and the ultimate like validation of success.

11:25And they're still chasing that they haven't gotten that yet. They haven't won a pen it yet. Either. But that that's saying something. I mean, I don't know how many clubs off the top of my head have made the postseason five out of the last seven years that put you in really, really impressive category. And it's something to be really proud of and something that fan base should feel excited about even if again, it hasn't gotten you to where you want to go. But you just got to keep putting yourself there and they've done that with different managers, different rotations, different supporting cast, different star players to some degree. It's, it's awesome and it's a really, really impressive track record. And when you know there are fan bases elsewhere that might want to discount with the podgers have done. Again, you can just speak to now a track record record of success beyond, you know, half a decade. That is super impressive, even if they have not reached the pinnacle to be here five out of seven years and three years in a row for the San Diego Padres. You know, not that long ago Derek, you were covering some miserable ball clubs to be here.

12:28Pretty awesome. That's all we all wrote a suit this is. There was a lot of lean years there. There was a lot of really bad baseball played there and to have this now like just for the fire faithful to have this kind of team to have this kind of atmosphere to have this kind of really ability to go into any season and think we should. Now we can we should be in the playoffs is really, really cool because this team every now every year now should be in the playoffs and you keep on bringing up guys like you know Ethan solace and just watch in the way that the guys rally. He said rally around him. There's the way that they accept him and they lean on him and they I think the best word is they trust him for a kid that young to come in and be. As as as relied upon and trusted and respected as he is in that clubhouse already is phenomenal.

13:31It's absolutely phenomenal and he's a guy right now. I don't think you there's a I know there's talking debate about who do you keep you keep your three catchers to you bring you know a Gavin sheets back I talked to Gavin by the way as if you'll spend. Fantastic. He fully expects to be able to play sometime this weekend so that'd be another better and bad to bring back. But right now can can you in good conscience keep Ethan solace off a playoff roster. I know he hasn't been here very long. I don't care if you have to drop one of the other catch and refer to for me as much as we love the kid right now given everything that that guy has been doing. And I go back to one at bat against Justin Robleski tonight because every single time this year that they've had a chance to pinch hit him. I guess the left handed hitter. I said left handed pitcher they've done it and this time Craig let him hit and you let him hit against the left hander. And once you do the kids lines of line drive single to left. I guess the tough left he was an all star this year who by the way Ethan got a hit off Robleski a triple a about a month ago when Justin was down there on a little rehab assignment.

14:40So he knew him he saw that I don't think I don't know if they do that or not but he's like you know what I'm going to let the kid ride with it and he rewarded him with another base it after he broke up the no hitter. So they are showing now extreme trust in the kid even from the managerial standpoint and you see what happens when they do that. Good things happen the rest of the team picks up you know Austin Hayes gets a base hit and Toddy gets a base hit. Here comes the other one you got three run inning and then it's Miller time and it slides out. So just the way that that guy is kind of galvanized the club house has been phenomenal. Yeah and even in that last inning when when Mason Miller throws that you know nasty sharp slider and it gets by Ethan Salis the very next pitch was another slider that he buried in the dirt that Salis was able to pick and there are a couple other tough tough pitches that Salis had to handle to get them out of what could have turned into like a really dice. I mean look tying run at the plate type of situation and Salis helped get them through that and so that's just like another big moment and he's just he's done it all.

15:49You know who was it that was talking today about just how much they enjoy pitching to Salis now comfortable they are with him behind the plate and his poise back there the confidence he gives pictures. David Morgan yes thank you who had you know was with Salis during that big fourth inning getting out of the base load of jam after he came in for Robbie Ray. And then what he's done with the bat you know he can do it with the arm going first to third today after that first hit against Tyler Glass now that set him up then to score on what was the dust and hair sack fly so he's just done it all you have to have him. I mean it's it's insane but you have to have him on the roster he's checked all of the boxes and does it with such poise maturity it's incredible. There are moments that define who you are and who you're becoming and when those moments arrive what you drive should rise to meet them. A few hiccups after that right after you know really the first game after the all star break first couple series after that all star break the recent stretch where they drop seven of nine and they just kept coming back and the stars they've had to be resilient.

19:18Individual basis they've had to be resilient as a collective. Anything else just in terms of like how you'll remember this team and the characteristics and the trademarks of this specific club. Not yet. They've got a lot of work to do. Because I can say something now but as it stands now at this point as it stands at this point you're right resilience is nice. It's the word I would use is it's unexpected you know because it's not not the fact that they're here because they should be here but the guys who got them here is what's unexpected nobody knew who some on Taylor was a new Justin Harris was nobody thought Ethan saw us was maybe even going to. Play a full season of baseball off of the backstop that even through last year was in the Arizona fall leaks still getting treatment. Ten months ago and now he's doing what he's doing here.

20:22Nobody thought that that most of these guys would do what they've been able to do walk a Mueller and Casey my as a Robbie Ray it's the list goes on so the the guys that got them here and the collection of players. Is what's really interesting to me is it's so unexpected the way they had to go about doing it how much that the we's Reneto how much depth they had to show in the organization. You know that the the J. Spohen that they didn't even know that they were going to have to rely on and sure enough they did it and they all every single one is delivered at some point it's been it's been really really fun to see. For sure a bunch of comments in the chat from Jose watching on Facebook Felicitates Ami's Padres let's see from Como on YouTube what a team wow skies a limit and I think you know these are nights like this you feel I heard from the owners I think I heard it from AJ Preller everybody like what is this team capable of and maybe it is a little more liquid courage or gumption from a big win in the celebration but.

21:31You know you've got I think the best record in baseball since like July 24th or something like that you know it feels a lot like 24 in that respect when again there are game away from being the Dodgers of the get through that then who knows what happens but similar similar vibe and I think excitement and they're really should be. Yeah this is awesome it really is it's it feels good man it feels like they're feels like they're on the right track and every single person said in there to yeah they're going to have fun they want to play off baseball at Deco Park yeah there you go they want they want that not bad bad way I talked to Michael King. You started that game one against the Braves in 2024 and he goes out there you should shut some down for seven shut out innings with 12 strikeouts and just the way that the crowd was chanting his name and you could see he like clicked in the competition mode said I was going to be really angry if I had to pitch on Sunday you know I was going to have an angry Sunday if I had to pitch because I want I want that game one I want that game one and he wants to have it at Deco Park as he knows.

22:39He knows the pure shot of electricity and adrenaline that goes you are main lighting adrenaline when you pitch in front of Deco Park crowd the playoffs. Well and hey we discussed this on the earlier edition of the pod before they clinch before this game about that Sunday situation so for those that aren't convinced that King should not pitch if they need to you know win in order to clinch home for the wildcard. Michael King himself once game one so I think that's important to factor in as well it's not just Craig Stam's decision who I'm sure he's making in concert with AJ Preller Ruben Diabla but Michael King once game one and so I think you have to factor that in as well. Well sure well now if you asked Eric Groopner he would say no no if you have a chance to get home field start Michael King because he wants to extra games of Deco Park however I think pretty much anybody else would say no no you're good you keep Mike for the playoffs. Yeah more from co mo Ethan Salis the youngest player on the team but his in all caps fearlessness is infectious every great team needs a young guy and Salis is truly exceptional and that's a good point I mean this era of Padres baseball has a history of these young guys showing up and making an impact and it's also the older guys vouching for and endorsing and supporting and lifting up the young guys the way many mature.

24:03Eric Cosmer and Ian Kinsler went to AJ Preller in pure Arizona in 2019 and said you are putting Fernando Tati's junior on the opening day roster and that's what they did and I mean even in 2022 a CJA Broms he proved it they put him on the opening day roster 2024 Jackson Maryland never played center field before put him on the opening day roster and he was phenomenal in a big part of a 2024 season and so you can see the enthusiasm around all those guys the excitement for the success of Ethan Salis the young guys are the most important thing to do is to get the best of the best of the season. Ethan Salis because they've all been there and they've all experienced that at different times with different players and Ethan Salis that now the next in line. Well I asked Jackson Maros you you've never known a season that doesn't end with one of these celebrations so it's just going to be your whole career is like yeah yeah this is what we're going to this is what I play for this this is good this is just what I'm going to do I'm going to be in the playoffs I'm going to be able to do this and he and he probably can pull something like that off which is which is fantastic. Something else Jackson said was you know we asked him what clicked about this team to turn around and put him on the run that they're on you said failure about the team together to everybody everybody had scumble to some point everybody had a rough patch a whole offense stunk most of the first half and by going through all of that you said you learn a lot about people and what they all learn together was we're good together we support each other and with the help of Ty France.

25:30We're good with the help of Ty France carrying the offense for a month and a half before everybody can actually get to the point where they can start swinging the bats again they went through that as a unit and came on the other end and go well we know what we are we know we can be and it's it's going to be awfully fun when we all put it together and that helped to put it all together for sure no doubt from Kirsten will be cool if we can get far enough for Ramon Loriano to come back. He's not going to play this year. We'll see good thing is you always like to have Ramon Loriano feel like you don't necessarily need Ramon Loriano because of what doesn't hear some odd Taylor down the line has done and speaking of that. Alex Braggman the fluke injury round of Akunya getting hit in the shin and now Luis arise look like a really ugly ankle injury get home feel this weekend and stay healthy this weekend those are the two main goals because you can you do not want another Ramon Loriano type of injury.
