Therapy's biggest impact doesn't show up in some dramatic breakthrough. It shows up in the smallest moments. You bite your tongue instead of escalating. You put your phone down instead of firing off that text. You say what you actually mean instead of what would hurt someone else the most. Nobody applaud those moments, but they quietly change your life. That's what growing feels like, and that's exactly what growth therapy is here for. Grow is therapy that works, covered by insurance. Join us how you doing? I'm good, Jason. How are you doing? I'm doing great, man. It's early in the season, and I can watch boring hockey all year long. I know there'll be some games that are uneventful early in the year, Gimme Chaos. And, you know what, no, I'm not expecting 16 goals every night, but it is, if you want entertainment, that to me is entertaining. It's not Chris Pocky. It's not perfect defense of hockey, but it's lead changes. It's entertaining. It's back and forth, and there's a lot of points. So early in the year, sign me up for that. Where do you come out? Yeah, no, I hear you, Jason. I think sometimes we see here, and we're expecting things to be tight and to be really coordinated and mistake-free, and that's just not the reality. I mean, that's what you're working towards over the course of the season. Boaches are trying to get, you know, what do they try to do? We've got to limit our mistakes. You know, there's going to be mistakes in the game, early on in the year, especially in the year, where there has been limited practice time, limited preseason time.
This is what you can expect. I mean, I'm watching that game last night, okay? So here's what I thought about it. I said, this looks like a preseason game that would have been played at this time last year. That looked exactly like a preseason game. Yeah. I think you know, like it's loose. It's kind of like, you know, you're trying to get some things done, some players are trying to figure out what to do, some other ones are not sure what to do. And that's what that game was last night. There was a, I mean, laughing, that wasn't laughing. I'm thinking like the Vikings went into Chicago a couple of weekends ago on us rainy Sunday. The game was 9-3. That was boring. That last night, 9-7 was fun. Yeah. Well, it's, well, the first 30 minutes Craig was like Vancouver barely touched the puck. I know. I know. It was, it was crazy how dominant it was. And you've been right, like it, it's, I can't, I don't know what the proper way to describe it when we say it's human nature, but you do relax. Clearly, they got comfortable and we're just like, well, okay, it's game over.
It's eight to two. We just scored two short hand of goals and 25 seconds. Good night Irene. And they were correct because they did go on to win the game. It just ended up being a little bit closer than it was. But those first 30 minutes give you assemblies that some of their underlying structure is there if they actually decide to play it. Yeah. And again, I'm going to go back and trying to find that consistency. You're trying to find like, I'm a big believer in that. Is it, if you want to win at the most important times of the year and you want to compete for a Stanley Topple, when you have control of the game, you can't let control that game slip out of your hands. Last night was like the, like the, the, the pig that, that the Edmonton Reuters had in the pen was, was, was contained. And then all of a sudden, a little bit of grease stride on the pig and all of a sudden you're trying to, you're trying to give your hands around a grease page and it slips through. And that's, that's what happens early in the season.
That's what happens at different points. I mean, we saw it last year at times with the Reuters. They got to clean things up. No kidding. Like, wow, like, thanks for that great insight, Chris Button. But that's exactly what has to happen. I thought they had some really good play in their very first game against Van Coover. And then, you know, and a quick span in the third period, it's five two. But here's the one thing about the Edmonton Reuters. Like, and they know this. And I, I think this might be the thing that might bad luck might be up against the hardest. Is they know if it's all behind by three, they should tie it up. They know that it doesn't matter how big the, the deficit is, they can get back in a game. And so I think that kind of mindset has to be changed. And I probably believe that that's one of the biggest challenges for Mike to try to do with this group. Yeah. And then the other one is, you know, you've got four of your top seven or eight forwards out of the lineup. And, you know, hey, it creates opportunity. Great. You, even because sometimes it's hard to give players opportunities in when you're a veteran
team because you're just like, well, hey, you know what, I got Zach Kym and I got Brian Newgen Hopkins and I got Dickinson and Savoy. Well, I'm not going to play those guys less minutes, but suddenly they're out of the lineup. And somebody's going to get more minutes. This will be a good opportunity for the next few weeks for the orders to see of those guys next who can help their team. Well, and you're finding out some stuff on some players now that into your point would not have had opportunity. And you want to, you want to get, I guess some reps. And the reps are not just for the players. It's almost over the coach. Hey, I can feel control with this player here. Oh, God. Maybe I want to see a little bit more of that. And then, and this is again, I'm going to go to the short and, you know, I'm going to go to the short and pretty season. The new coach trying to come in. You can watch all the tape you want. And like that guy's detailed, he's invested in the process. But I think you're standing behind that bench and you see a opponent push at you and you see, you know, how players are reacting in real time. And these are reps for the coaching staff as well.
Yeah. Speaking of the preseason, Craig, like this was the first year of his four games. And I do wonder if we look next year and some teams will be like, hey, you know, I'm getting my starting goalie a little bit more reps here. I'm going to give some guys, like I know that they can only play two games, but a lot of the goalies didn't even play full two games. I wonder if that will change as they get used to it. Yeah, I think you have to make those adjustments, so I Jason, I look at the NFL and, you know, in three preseason games. I mean, you got border backs if they're counting on the set with a clipboard for two games, like, you know, certain amount of snaps, like it, and then you're surprised that they're struggling in the, in the, when the real season starts, I think it's the same thing with goal tenders. You need reps. You need rhythm. And I think the biggest learning, the, the largest part of learning for NHL teams is here is like, we're starting right away with our group. There's not good. I don't think you're going to see like large groups and training camp any longer. I think you're going to see there's our 28.
Let's get the goal tenders test. So let's work them hard in practice. We know they can only play so many games, but this is how we're going to do it. And I think you have to do it. Yeah, well, it makes sense for sure. It is early Craig, but Evan Bouchard had himself a hell of a year last year. And man, he, he looks even better this year to start. Guessing is for game shows, not your business. Workday is the enterprise AI platform for HR, finance and IT, with AI grounded in your context to get work done and done right. It's a new work day. Be guest ready with Arm and Hammer Cat litter. Find it now at Walmart or Amazon. He was number one on my North Stalker Dollar. It's all out there. It's public. It's public for anybody to see. I've just think that he's much more lined for a mistake that gets played over and over again on TV, on the replays and everything. He's a terrific player. He's a superstar. You look at his body of work, you look at how he started this season. It's beyond phenomenal. It really is. It's beyond phenomenal. I don't think you're going to see drop-off in heaven. I believe that Evan has got the capability to be 100-point defenseman, but people say
all he does is play offense. That's what you think about Evan Bouchart. What your telling me is. You don't really watch Evan Bouchart. Yeah, I'm with you, man. Yeah, he made a few mistakes, sure, but he made way more good plays than he ever made bad plays. The Winnipeg Jets open up their season tonight. The Stuart Skinner era begins in Winnipeg. Being a former GM Craig, I can respect Sheville Daff because it's kind of bigger picture than just Hella Buck here. You can't just let players kind of control your organization and you can ask for a trade and that's fine. That's part of it. But you can't just give in and get rid of them because then who knows in a year if the next guy does it. How do you see this one unfolding over the next weeks or months? Okay, so first of all, I think you just nailed it with Evan and the Winnipeg Jets. It's a much bigger picture than just Conor Hella Buck. A lot of the other day, there were some reports. Conor Hella Buck, you know, he's just, you know, the body clock says he wants the play
and, you know, he's missing being part of the team. Hopefully they did a deal done. He's the guy that has to be traded and you want to go out, wind into your little sources out there because that's what he's doing now. Him or his age and her bolts are winding to their little sources. He's all porkbondered. The body clock and you know, he wants to do his play. Oh, really? Oh, he does, eh? Sorry. So for Kevin Sheville Day off, it's real simple. You make the best deal for your team. Listen, there's nobody in Winnipeg that is, that is on Conor Hella Buck's side. Nobody. And for Kevin Sheville Day off, that's a good place to be. And for his team and his markets, you make the deal when the right deal is there. And if that's regular, it's February. And if it's, if it's, uh, and then next summer, it's next summer. But the bottom line is, uh, he's got to do what's best on a bigger platform and with a bigger picture in mind, as you just mentioned. The other thing and on the short term, Stewart Skinner shown that he can be a real capable gold tender, a real good, capable gold tender. And this late.
So I, I know that they're going to, uh, you know, be open that that starts out well against a good boss and brewing team in game one. But you know, the, there's always going to be pressures at bear and what you, what, what you're trying to do with your, with your team. And certainly, you know, players, like you said, they can ask for a trade good, good. But you don't get the dictate where you're going and you certainly don't get the dictate when you go. Yeah. 100%. What about the, uh, what's going on in Detroit? It was Larkin and now Edvinson, like I, when I've seen all these contracts out there, like here's a reality. If you want, if you want your young players, you're going to have to pay them now. Like that's just, you might not like it. You try to get a little bit less, but hell, Tristan Luno is playing 14 games. He's getting 50 million bucks. Like Edvinson, I really don't understand Craig how he doesn't have a contract. Well, he doesn't have a contract because at some point in time, somebody has played, uh, has taken a harder line, whether it be on term, whether it be on dollars.
And you know, the marketplace starts to dictate what you got to do. So he bullions signs for over nine million bucks, right? Tristan Luno with all of 14 games, signs for seven point two, Mitchikov, you know, similar type dollars. So right now, it feels like the Detroit Red Wings are kind of drifting, right? Where are they? I mean, we saw the, you know, Steve Iserman leave. Chris Litch is going through interviews. Certain people say, no, we're not interested. Well, where are they? Who are they? What are they? It's kind of a, I'll be honest with you. Actually, it's a sad time for the Detroit Red Wings right now, because they appear, they appear to be rudderless quite frankly. Yeah, well, I totally agree. Like I, for an organization, original six, like that's kind of wild. And one last one, Craig, I want to get your thoughts. So what did you make of the Marchenko, Nies and other pieces trade? Yeah, I think Marchenko is a really good player. I'll break it down this quickly here. I think Marchenko's first line player, I think Nies is a second line player.
Now, like, a nice player on your top line, yeah. I think that Marchenko can play better with Matthews. I think he is shot and is playmaking or a notch above Matthew Nies. I mean, we can look at the dollars and whatnot, but this is about the team. I think the big part of it is what's going to get Matthews back to be in the elite where the superstar that they believe they need him to be and they want him to be. And I think Marchenko fits the bill a little bit better than Matthew Nies. Interesting. See, I look at that. I love this trade for Columbus. You get rid of, I do too. Yeah, I do too. Yeah. I'm not knocking it on Columbus's side. Don't get me wrong here. I and listen, Marchenko won it out. So Dawn would out, like made a really good trade. And I like it for Columbus too. Don't get me wrong. I hope I wasn't conveying that this wasn't a good trade for Columbus. That's not how I feel. Okay. I presented it first from the Toronto perspective, but Matthew Nies is a good player. Oh, like the one thing I look at the Craig when I look at this trade that has me a
little per plaque and maybe I'm wrong. But I look at the leaves organization. I feel like, you know, what held them back those years? They had a lot of skill, right? Like they had some great skill and maybe is a little bit of, you know, inexperience sometimes, but they were never able to win really a big game other than one series, right? Basically in the last decade. That's it. And I look and say, well, you know what? Nazum Kajra, he was too emotional. And he asked he took some bad penalties, but he's a hard player to replace. And then they just let Zach Hyman walk for nothing and Zach Hyman is a blood sweat and tears guy. You know what? To obviously, hey, if he scored 50 goals with McDabre, I'm not saying he would have scored 15 Toronto, but maybe it would have scored 35 or 40. And now you get rid of knives and he's a bigger, a little bit more gritty or not as skilled as though, and it feels like they've gone back to all skill again without having a little bit of skilled grip. Like they have too much of the same type of skill. You know, I mean, but that's kind of planted their, their stake in the ground so to speak on that, right? And I agree with that. Listen, you can go get Marchenko.
You can go get a lot of part of their blue line to still really, really like what I would call some par. So you're right about the skill part that there was two few players that I thought there were too light in their lineup. And the blue line right now is very good. So like you make these trades and like I'm just telling you what my thinking is on their part that I think they're trying to get my, and I think they, I believe this two Jason. I think they look at last year as an aberration. And I think they think they're closer to being what they were two years ago. I don't see it that way. Okay. Yeah. Greg always get a catch up. They buy, oh, quickly. What about Luna? What do you think? What do you make of that signing? Well, it's a top. Good for Tristan Luna. Yes. That's about that. Is there a better way to put it? Hey, 14 games. I mean, that for beat. I mean, Hey, listen, you saw that how Muleo Carlson, he gets a gochie, he signs Vincent Coss, he goes, okay, this is what I got to do now. Yeah, that's not, man. No, you know, I agree. 14 games. 40.
I'm like, why would you think someone's going to offer him that? Why wait till the end of the year, at least, and then if he has a great year, okay, then you pay him. But man, maybe it doesn't have a good year now. It's fair, Greg. No. But you get scared, Greg. Very weird. Greg, have yourself an awesome weekend. That's...
