Hey, from CNN, I'm a FOMA DK, with the five things you need to know for Thursday, March 12th. Authorities say a suspect is dead after ramming their vehicle into a synagogue in the Detroit area earlier today. A law enforcement official says the suspect went into Temple Israel with a rifle. Authorities say security saw him in open fire and that no one else has seriously hurt. CNN's Jason Kirill has more. We're hearing that the suspect's body found there in the vehicle is so badly damaged, making an ID initially might prove to be difficult. Going forward, the investigation is going to be focused on, did this suspect act alone? Did this suspect act with others? Multiple law enforcement officials briefed on the scene say emergency responders found but appeared to be a large amount of explosives in the back of the vehicle. Authorities say extra law enforcement is being added around other Jewish spaces in the area and more places of worship.

Meanwhile in Virginia, another shooting is being investigated as a terror-related attack. A suspect is dead after a shooting inside an academic building at Old Dominion University this morning. That's according to the school's police chief, who says one person is dead and two others injured. Multiple law enforcement officials say the suspect was a former Army National Guard member who was previously jailed for attempting to support an Islamic terror group. More news coming up, including how the war with Iran is affecting the housing market. Now to the latest on the war with Iran. A migration expert warns that the number of people displaced in Lebanon could reach one million within days. As intense fighting along the country's border with Israel, force hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes. The director of the International Organization of Migration for the Middle East and North Africa says people are seeking refuge in areas already struggling to cope with large numbers of people needing shelter. This, as Israel's defense minister told its military to prepare for expanding operations against Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah and Lebanon.

In other news, financial giants, such as Goldman Sachs, are closing branches in the Middle East and telling staffers to work remotely as Iran attacks its Gulf neighbors. And back in the U.S., California Governor Gavin Newsom says there is no imminent threat to the state after an FBI memo alerted state officials of unburified claims of possible Iran-john attacks. Two weeks ago, the average rate of a standard 30-year fixed mortgage fell below 6 percent for the first time since 2022. Well, for the week ending today, the rate climbed to 6.11 percent, according to a survey of lenders by Freddie Mac. Investors are worried about the economic impact of President Trump's war on Iran. But today, a group of bipartisan senators took steps to improve housing affordability. They passed a large package containing roughly 40 provisions intended to increase housing supply and lower costs. It remains to be seen if it can pass the house as is, and comes one month after the house passed a similar slimmer package. A new investigation into a police shooting in Bridgeport, Connecticut last year revealed that Dishon Best, who had been shot by police, died after having to wait 10 extra minutes for an ambulance.

After an officer having a, quote, mild anxiety attack took the first emergency vehicle that arrived at the scene. Best, a 39-year-old black man, was shot in the back last year as he fled from officers. The report that was released on Tuesday by the state's Inspector General, found that the shooting was justified because Best had a gun in his hand at the time of the incident. The report didn't say whether the delay in waiting for another ambulance contributed to Best's death. The officer involved Aaron Perotta is currently on administrative leave due to an unrelated matter that was not disclosed. One of Best's nieces told the Associated Press that the revelations from the report have angered and sat in the family. When we come back, weather whip lash incoming. This week on the assignment, with me, Adi Cornish. George Severus, the host of the podcast United States of Kennedy, which digs into America's enduring fascination with this mid-century camelot. You know, I don't want to be too controversial about the Kennedy family overall, and part of it is the hunger for power and influence, of course.

But the other part is he understood early on the intersection between entertainment and politics. To tell us more here at CNN's Derek Band-Am. Yeah, Foma, don't put away your cold weather gear just yet. If you live in the eastern US, a return to winter-like chill would begin today. While the western US usheres in a long-standing heat dome that's going to send high temperatures skyrocketing to all-time record-march levels. If this sounds familiar to you, it's because this is the same weather pattern that brought multiple rounds of cold air and snow to the east and abysmal snow totals to the west this winter. Now, expect parts of the west to experience temperatures 20 to 30 degrees above normal, going forward the next couple of weeks while the east runs 10 to 20 degrees below average.

That's all for now. We're back at 7 a.m. Eastern. I'm CNN tech reporter Claire Duffy. This week on the podcast, Terms of Service. There's a growing category of products aimed specifically at addressing women's unique health needs. These tools and services are sometimes known as FEM tech, and they can provide big opportunities and benefits, but they can also come with some risks. To walk us through all of this, I spoke with Bethany Corbin. Bethany is an attorney and CEO of FEM Innovation, where she advises startups, clinicians, and healthcare organizations. In my opinion, what it really does is gives us a collective language to talk about women's healthcare innovation and the tools that are out there so that we can take control of our healthcare experiences and know how to advocate for ourselves in a system that's probably not been designed to advocate for us.
