Well, this is big. Can't wait to talk with our next guest. Skinny's all excited because we were talking Bengals earlier, but skinny's always fired up about the Kentucky Wildcats. Let's go back to Saturday night. UK Wildcats at Seth Carolina down a point after scoring a touchdown in overtime. First year head coach Will Stein doesn't blink doesn't flinch as we're going for two in the win. Here is the call from Tom Leach and my next guest on the UK radio network has heard on ESPN 15 30. Three receivers that are trying outside the right tackle and get Anderson back to the near side. Now backstreet ships back into the backfield. And she calls for the ball all out blitz. Backstreet picks it up. He throws. Yeah, Kentucky wins. Well, I run. Regan's caught and won over the back line of the end zone. CJ Baxter with a great blitz pick up to give me time. Kentucky rallies from 17 down on the road. Will Stein in his first year is four and one. The first UK coach to start four and one since Bear Bryant in 1946.
Let's get more on this from the UK radio team dating back to 2002 sports director. But I believe WTV Q in Lexington. Oh, do we go back the stories we could tell from our days in radio together? Welcome in Jeff Pancoro. How are you? How are you, Lance? I am fantastic. It is great to hear your voice. Thank you. Great to have me on again. Thanks. I really appreciate it. Tell me is it fair to say that big blue nation has bought into Will Stein hook line and sinker. Yeah, I don't think there's any doubt about that. I mean, look, it's a wide open offensive. The last coach was defensive minded. This is an offensive. And it's not the air raid back with Tim couch play, but it's a lot of fun. Jeff, I remember going back to the day, SEC media day. And I remember your reaction on Twitter. You loved it from that very moment, didn't you? Yeah, as a player, when someone says, why are you going to win in the coaches because of me?
I mean, that you're like, man, this guy's confident. And it showed and here's the thing, Lance, he's brought in 62 new players. Freshman and transfer portal this year. 62, they've all bought into it. And that's half the battle. You know that. Yeah, no doubt, no doubt. Take me back to Saturday night going for the win. There was never a question. He was going to go for the win. Was there? Yeah, he said that even before the series, he told the team. He said, look, if we score, we're going for two. So they knew the fans didn't, but they all knew. And that's why, look, you want that as a player to it. And it was, it was almost, you know, it was a survival of the fittest in that game because they lost three or four players on both sides of the ball. And it was, it was getting hairy there towards me. And I didn't, you know, he was like, I just don't know if we got a player. So we got to go to the win. The two point conversion caught by the CuffCath product, Willie Rodriguez. Now 19 catches, 194 yards. I think on the season, he's a factor in this offense, isn't he? Oh, he's he's fantastic.
You remember Michael Mayor who was tied in before him at CuffCath now playing for the loss of Las Vegas Raiders? Lot like him. He's a three down tied in meaning he can block two. So he didn't have to come out of the game. The key to this Kentucky team in the Lans, you'll love this. They play almost 60% of their plays with three tied in on the field. And they also added an extra offensive line. And they put him in number 89. And they go jumbo with four tied in. So it is really cool because all three of them can really run, all of them run under four or five and one of six seven, 260 pounds. Wow. So Saturday night under the lights, number 10 LSU in town. Buckle up, holy cow, are you ready? I think the fans are going to go crazy. It's Keemlin too. They call it the double daily double. You got to Keemlin during the day. You have a couple of pops out there. You tailgate for an hour or two.
Come into the stadium. It's going to be a blue out. It's going to be a lot of fun. Like it's sold out tickets. People are calling me for tickets and my army going. So I don't know what to tell you. No, oh, by the other way, credentials for the press box completely sold out as well. Really? Wow. So people are starting to buy into this team. Yeah. Tell me about the quarterback. Kenny Minchie, give me your impressions of him. Here's the thing, Lance. He's a, this is his third year in college. He's 21 years old. He's a little more mature. So even though this is his first year starting, he was a backup at Notre Dame to CJ Carr, who won the battle there. And so he said, look, I don't want to sit another year. I got to go somewhere and play. And he's just really good. He's mature. He's confident. He really knows his offense well. And really, you have to look at Will Stein, the head coach and see who he's coached the last four years. And you're like, OK, if I'm a quarterback, I want to play for this guy because all those guys are playing in the league, right?
And that's the thing. He's kind of like the quarterback whisperer, so to speak. And Minchie is just a really good fit. He's not the biggest guy in the world. He's only about six, three, and maybe 210 pounds. But he's cool in the pocket. You know, he's not a runner, but he's not paid manly neither. I mean, he can get out of the pocket. But he's just really smart. And his confidence, I think, rubs off on the rest of the team. Jeff obviously, four more and everybody loves him. But just give us an idea of how he's fit into Lexington, what he's like to deal with and just how he's handling this situation. But Stein or Kenny Minchie? I'm sorry, Will Stein. Oh, yeah, Will is great. Because I play with the fathers of matter fact, his father and I room together are thrilling. I mean, during summer camp, yeah. And so he's been a Kentucky fan since he was a little kid. Wanted to walk on or wanted to come to UK, they didn't offer him a scholarship. So he walked on at Louisville. He was a great player at Trinity High School in Louisville, which is kind of like St.
Nex and Mollers and Elder and Cincinnati. And Will is just a great guy. And again, it's the confidence that he exudes. I think people just love him here. All right, I can't get you on here with that. Ask an a thought on the wild cats basketball. And I know in this day and agent's hard to tell who has what and who's going to be good with so many new faces. Just give me a general sensor of vibe for this edition of Big Blue Basketball. Funny that you should ask that last day, just finished their pro day minutes before you called it seven o'clock. They're pro day ended. So they had scouts from every team at Ruperena watching them. What he says is their strength is their length. They're really long team. They're going to have four guys on the court probably that are all over six six between six six and seven one or seven two. So they got great length out there. And I think that's going to be the key. You know, they got the kids from Iowa State Montchill of it and he's their shooter. But I still remember who the alpha is on this team.
And I think they got to figure that out in the next month. Hey, I know busy day for you. It is great catching up with you. Thank you for the perspective on the Kentucky wild cats. And I hope I can bug you. Maybe later on during the season. We may have lost him. Oh, okay. There he is. He's back. Thanks, pick. Take care. All right. There you go. Jeff Picoro. Man, we go back to the 1160 Bob days. Turn your knob to Bob. What 97 when I first got into town and Jeff was doing sports reports, sports updates and everything else at that time. But you have four and one for the Kentucky wild cats Saturday night, seven o'clock, the LSU Tigers in town. All right. We've set up a Bengal Stopping tonight, a little Zack Taylor conversation. I want to kind of pick up where we left off on the Zack talk from the standpoint of could the messaging have stagnated? Can it lose its effectiveness?
Is the way it was done still capable of working when you're two and two at this point. Zack talked about, you know, silver linings. And now nobody wants to hear this. I'm proud of this team for how they fought. I'm allowed to see the silver lining. And that's it. This team's got a lot of fight. At what point does the messaging have to become something of a greater sense of urgency and a demand, if not an anger behind, were two and two. This can't keep happening. And again, that's more of an emotional than logical for me. And that's more of a fan than maybe reality thing. So to speak, I just, I look at it and I know some voices get tuned out when the messaging is always the same. And Zack has always been that way positive. It's in a DNA runs through his veins. And it helped him build a bond and rebuild Bengal's football and take him to a Superbowl
and take him back to the FC championship. But man, when you do what you did in the off season and you come out and you've done what you've done in the first four weeks, it feels like what's required is a, is a shift. And is he capable of that? Five one three seven four nine seven thousand one eight hundred the big one, Tony Pike on the messaging from Zack and where they are and where they're headed.
