All right, here we go. It's Thursday night, 607 on 700 WLW. It must be the round table show. We are presented by Cincinnati tax resolution powered by Toe Sheldon. We're hanging at it. Long next in Wilder. We love long next in Wilder. We do it for three hours. I'm Lance Pekallister. He is Rocky Boyman. The second of a three week run here. We've got a fantastic setup. We love our setup here. There's plenty of TVs and outstanding food and beer to be had. Prizes to be given away details to follow. I will say this at the start rock. None of this in the first four weeks of the season. None of this is going according to plan because they were not supposed to be two and
two. And I might need to call on you tonight. You know, I can get a little wound up. I can get a little on edge. I'm going to need you as the former player to lend perspective and say Lance to only four games. And there's 13 left. But my response to that all week has been I'm not calling the season over by any stretch of the imagination. It's two and two. And there's 13 games left. That's 76.4% of the season. According to my Butler math. The problem is they're already behind the eight ball and chasing stuff. When you lose to the Steelers, when you had no business losing to the Steelers, when you lose at home to Jacksonville, in both of those were winnable games, I get you're not going to win them all. I just I feel like we're back in a position we've we've been talking about seemingly every year of a clunky, slower start, making things more difficult than it has to be and reducing the margin of error and making your heart or throughout the rest of the season. Is this a bad time to mention that there's two wins or over teams that are currently winless? And if they win this, we didn't
know that I was just yeah, this weekend would make it three wins over three teams without a win. No, look, I don't think there is panic. I think that's ridiculous. But to your point, this was the season, right? This was the season where it wasn't like, man, let's hopefully let's fight scratching claw and make it the playoffs. It was like we weren't going after that first round by yep, home playoff game. Yep, that that was the kind of the expectation and everything leading to the off season fit that to a tee with it. You know, the Dexter Lawrence signing was been mentioned 10 million times. Aggressive and free agency. All those things that led up to a camp one crate first couple of weeks look great. And then it's just been that it hasn't isn't gone well since. So yeah, I think there's there's a little bit of panic in that. This is not how it was supposed to be. Not this season, not this roster. Yes, there's still plenty of football to be played. But we're back in that thing where we didn't want to be, which is man, looking back at that one game, that one game September. If we had just at the bank was just one that things could be so much
different. But here we are. And I guess what I keep going back to I will hear people and they will tell me. But they always start slow or the offense is always clunky early or the run game takes a while to get going. Look at last year, six weeks in. It wasn't much and then they got rolling. It chased Brown was dynamite the rest of the year. And my response that each time is well, isn't the bigger point why it always takes that amount of time to get it up and running and figured out. What's happening in the first month of a season that takes Zack Taylor and the coach is that long to adjust to seemingly year after year after year. And isn't the point of a season and an off season learning from what you get the last season or five seasons to and make that better so you don't have those. And let's remember, this is an offense that part of the one of the talking points was, wow, they have all five starting offensive linemen coming back and all their skill guys come away. They don't lose anybody. I mean, the beauty of continuity is you should be past things,
not re-dealing or dealing with things again. That's just. Yeah, you can make the argument if there was a bunch of new pieces. And you know, some of the main pieces were there, but they still have the left side of the offensive line. But continuity is can't be the excuse because these guys have been together for a long time. So, but here we are. Can I do some headlines? Let's start with those headlines. Mike Petrao, you will check in at about eight minutes from Mark with a full update. Let me give you the Cliff Notes version of the injury report today with the Bengals back on the practice field. Jamar Chase and Brian Cook limited, Dalton Ryzen or limited, Dexter Lawrence was limited. T Higgins did not practice. Kyle Dugger did not practice. Jordan Battle was a full go. We'll get in depth with tracks on what that means, perhaps for Sunday coming up in a bit. Thursday night football Tampa Bay in Dallas 730 on Fox 413 60. Baseball playoffs game four, White Sox and Guardians at 8 o'clock with the Sox up two games to one in the series. Meanwhile, the rays get the winner of the Sox and Guardians. The Dodgers and Brewers will start in the NLCS on,
I think that's on Sunday. The NFL has the Major League Baseball Redder has proposed returning to a 154 game regular season and a best of seven division series and adding this element, opponent selection in the wild card in division rounds of who the top seed wants to play of the remaining pick your opponent. Yes, starting in 2029 shortening the season would create a standard weekly day off benefiting player health and it would allow the addition of up to eight more postseason games. It's always about the money by moving to a best of seven division format in the beginning in 2027. The higher seedy clubs in the wild card in the division series would select their opponent and what I'm sure would be a made for TV event with all the executives in the room. And I think your selection is it'd be certainly be different and the idea is and this is not surprising because everything is driven by money. You would have everybody off on Mondays except for maybe
two games being played like an eight o'clock and West Coast game and baseball would be able to sell that in an exclusive window and get more money. Instead of you know the event. Yes, there's no minor league games on Monday and there'd be nobody else playing on Monday and baseball just the featured eight o'clock say and a ten o'clock game and baseball would then be able to say to advertisers look at this a lot of eyeballs here. I feel like baseball purists are going to hate this all those things you said. And so everybody else would be off on Monday and those the four teams that would play on Monday then get an off day on Thursday. So everybody gets one day off during the week throughout the season. That means adding some double headers in the season as well. All right high school football Hamilton County Common Police Court preliminary injunction hearing scheduled for this morning involving Elder Wide receiver Andrew Lyman's eligibility was cancelled. The parties reached a settlement agreement. Lyman can play additional games according to the Ohio
High School athletic association. They did not go into detail on what that means. I am told by those close to the situation. He's been granted the ability to play the remainder of the regular season and one postseason game which is interesting. Yes, how do they come up with that? I don't know. That's what I've been told by those close to the situation who played the rest of the year and the first playoff game. We'll see. That's what I've been told. FC Cincinnati getting ready. It's interesting the OHSA simply didn't reveal what it actually is. They said additional games and left it at that there and said it would be up to Elder to explain the rest basically. Which I find interesting. What would Elder want to explain? I don't know. FC Cincinnati getting ready for a Saturday road match up in Atlanta United FC 730. Laurel Failer of Queen City Press reports at Pat Noon and said today to the bander picked up a knock in the Montreal game. Knock is an injury. I like that. Soccer calls it a knock. You're not hurt or injured in soccer. You got a knock. I got a knock. I think the NFL should do that. I like it. Let's look at the injury report.
Who's got a knock? T Higgins has a knock. It could in terms of the bander's injury. He could get through it. Thought he could get it through it initially. Turned out worse than expected. He'll be out Saturday a timeline to be determined. That is a look at your headlines. Do not forget we got a giveaway tonight as we do each and every week. Your servers have what do we call not lottery tickets. Just tickets tickets. Just tickets. Raffle tickets. There you go. Mike Mills here. Look at multi-talented engineer. Raffle tickets. Drop them in the bucket and we'll draw. You got to be here at 9 o'clock when we draw for the very cool long next Bengal shirt and it puts you in the drawing the opportunity for next week's T Higgins print that is behind the bar right now. You may see that. The number five over there on the corner. We give away that the third week of each of our stops. We make the tour around the long next throughout the area. This is our second of three. We are very happy to be here. I think we're set. We come back. That guy. What's his name? He used to
do a weekly for us and he hasn't done the last few weeks. I forget his name. He'll figure it out. He'll join us next I believe. It's the round table show presented by Cincinnati Tax Resolution Power by Tofe Sheldon. We're at long next in water till nine. Stop out and hang out with us on 700 WLW. Us going on the road doing battle mountain and e-lead. Yeah, you took me, you were one of the first people who took me on the road. Which is funny because at the time I was like, I don't know if I like this guy. With rapper, actor, David Diggs. The jump off for me was Hamilton and it was the most popular thing in a very long time. But it was still for me, it was me and my friends making something dumb. If it's happening on a football field, NFL Daily will cover it.
Listen to NFL Daily on the iHeart Radio app, Apple podcast or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm former U.S. Mons National Soccer Team player, Carly Lloyd. I'm Fox Sports reporter, Jenny Taft. And on our new podcast, whatever it takes, we're talking motherhood, marriages, careers and figuring out how to balance it all. And we'll discuss the game that brought us together because nothing is off limits. Do you remember your initial reaction when Fox called you to be a part of the World Cup? I was like, no, I don't want to do it. You said no. I played with players that didn't. I don't think that they really truly loved the game. I found the love with the ball at my foot. But in my head, it was the long game. It was like, I don't care what I'm being asked to do at Fox. I'm going to go get some reps and I'm going to learn it and love it and embrace it. He said, this group of people will never be in the same room as part of the same team ever again in your life. And it is your job to make sure that you enjoy the moment. You're proud of what you accomplish
together. Listen to whatever it takes with Carly Lloyd and Jenny Taft on the iHeart Radio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's up? I'm Tony Gonzalez. And I'm October Gonzalez. But you can call me Toby. We want you to join us on our new podcast, No Safe Words with October and Tony Gonzalez. We get real about marriage, parenthood, sex, divorce, and all the nitty gritty stuff we all think about, but just don't say out loud. I hate that job. You're probably just going to meet with some rich guy and he's going to whisk you away and I'll never see you again. Oh, this is awesome. Would you say a dealers actor? D. I don't even know there's the such thing as D. No, no, no, I mean like I didn't get on the sea list like I'm not even average. I'm not even passing. I'm failing. where it long nex in wilder. It's brought to you in part by Hawksworth Blood Center's Hawksworth Donors Save Lives close to home. Who you save and ever drive water-proofing if your basement leaks call ever dry. It's not dry till it's ever dry. Lance Picatlister Rocky Boyman, let's welcome in our next guest our first guest. He covers the Bengals and the Reds for Sea. He covers everything for Sea on us. A Sincere with the Y.com host of the Jungle War podcast. The man we call Trags Mike Petraia. Trags, let's start with we could probably do a whole segment on injuries. Let's just give everybody the three names they're probably most waiting for. What's your sense of T. Jamar and Brian Cook right now? I'd say Jamar is promising guys because he was on the field today. Saw him in the locker room. He was laughing, joking around. Talk to because Jamar chase didn't hold as weekly Thursday press conference. Talk to Don St. Myers and Don St. Myers and everybody was joking with him. He had great energy. So I don't know, read between
the lines. I think Jamar chase if everything goes okay tomorrow will clear concussion protocol. He'll be ready. I think the soft tissue issue injury, the adductor issue in the groin area with T Higgins. No pun intended, but a more sensitive issue. I don't think they want to press it with T. Especially given his soft tissue injuries in the past. I think they allow him another week off and then the by week and then come back against Baltimore in Baltimore fully ready to go. And then with Brian Cook, he spoke to us in the locker room today and he's going to do everything he can to be on the field. And I think he's going to be on the field. I think he went through some work on the rehab fields with his full pads, full gear on and he was limited in practice. So I think he's
going to be he's going to give it a go. So I would say Jamar chase is most likely. I'd say Brian Cook is possible. And I'd say T Higgins very unlikely. Chad, it's interesting. You know, this week a lot of conversation about the run game and did they abandon it too early and Joe Burrow has the comment. I'm like, okay, maybe we need to throw it more. What where do you fall on the I guess that should the Bengals have a band in the run game? And just just your thoughts on that conversation right there. They just need Rocky to do a better job of running the ball. They need to find better schemes for getting chase brown into the game plan earlier in games. And that means getting the lead. The biggest problem I had last week in the first half was not going forward on fourth and one at the 44. You've got in the NFL if you are worth your weight and gold and you are the team that the Bengals purport to be a championship caliber club then you've got to be able to get one yard early
in the game. Especially when your defense had just turned over the Jacksonville Jaguars on a three and out, you've got to be able to march down the field. And to have to punt in that situation and be unable to run the ball for you are really is pretty damning to the physicality, the mentality of that offense. And I think they were fighting behind the eight ball the entire game because of that one drive. That's my sense. So if the Bengals really want to establish a run, they've got to do it early in games. They've got to do it with a physicality and not just chase Brown but throw some Ajay Pee Ryan in there as well. They've got to be more physical in the run game and in the short passing game to set up a longer attack down the field. Tracks, you talked with Tech Carousel on Monday. Are you surprised with continuity such a talking point for this offensive line this year and everybody coming back or are you surprised the offensive
line has experienced the issues they have? A little bit. I think Orlando Brown has done the best possible job of shoring up his play after a rough couple of weeks to start the year. I think even he would acknowledge that. Zach Taylor certainly has acknowledged that they've given him some help on his side of the offensive line. I also think Dalton Ryzen or is reaching a point of no return where that the injury of his plus knee. They're reaching a point where they're going to have to take him out of the lineup because as much as we loved Dalton Ryzen he is a terrific leader along that offensive line. He has been a liability no other way to put it because he's injured and you can't have a liability and he's their best run blocker. Well he may be their best run blocker but if he's playing on one leg what good does that do you? So that's where I think the Bengals are hurting
is right in the interior of that offensive line. Do they put someone in like Jalen Rivers this Sunday of Dalton Ryzen or is too short to go? Do they go with Jacob Bayer who looked really good in the training camp looked really good in preseason? Do they decide to go in that direction? That's where I think the Bengals have some tough decisions to make. I just wonder if a lot of this comes down to that this Bengals offensive line was built to protect the passer. They are not like that. Stull were run blockers and now you're throwing injuries on top of it and on top of that you got a quarterback who said many times I like throwing the football so it's almost like you know or it doesn't match. Yeah it doesn't match and like we're expecting this dominant run game and that we're not built for and the quarterback doesn't seem to really want to you know lay on too much. Here's my problem with all of this. The Bengals have never made running the ball a priority to compliment Joe Burrow and Joe Burrow would be a much better quarterback and
a much more proficient and efficient quarterback if he had a run game behind him that's all there is to it. You know people can say well this is a pass-oriented offense that Taylor wants to pass pass pass great. Well two things to that. First of all if other teams know you're going to pass whatever it is seventy seventy five percent of the time they're going to tee off on you. They're going to say screw it. We'll give up a five to ten-yard game occasionally, game occasionally if it means getting to the quarterback and punishing Joe Burrow and two when you need to run in short yardage situations like I mentioned on fourth and one in the first quarter you're not going to be able to do it or you're you're more unlikely able to do it and it leads to decisions like well we don't want to pass and have an incomplete pass so let's just punt the ball away. I think that's a pass-ackwards way going about offense in the modern day NFL. Yeah. Tracks what do you need to see out of this what
do you hope and you see out of this defense this weekend? A physical response you know Jordan battle caught some flack a couple hours ago on social media for saying that Malik Willis tends to tap the ball and that's a tell on maybe the Bengals getting a read and being able to pick off Malik a couple of times this this Sunday. I think those are often overblown because a quarterback is not going to change what he's going to do in a couple of days. He's just not. Would Zack Taylor have preferred him not to say that sure but what I'm looking for from this Bengal offense is to be able to stop the tight ends and stop the run a little more physically and get this Miami team in third and medium third and long more and do what they did frankly against this Miami team last year and granted a different head coach a lot of different personnel but take
the wind out of this Miami team early that's what I'm looking for the Bengals to do on Sunday do not let Miami think that they're in the game in the second half of the chance to pull off enough set and then you walk out of Miami questioning your thrust of your season. Tracks how can listeners read watch and follow all your fantastic content. Tracks always fun good to have you back great here in you today. Thank you. We'll talk next week. Appreciate it gentlemen take care. He is Tracks Mike Petraia weekly staple of the show.
Still ahead we'll get into a little bit more of that offense in the run game and under center and how the NFL is changing and maybe the Bengals need to jump on board with that. He's Rocky on Lance. Football's back. Hey, it's Drew Franklin from NFL Cover Zero. Enjoy the NFL season while listening to NFL Cover Zero. We have storylines, predictions, and lots of silliness. Here's what you can expect from the podcast in our second season. When you meet people and you say your jobs as sports announcer, it's always interesting to see what the first thing they say is. I did have one of the more difficult questions though. He sits next to me and he sees I'm on my computer and he goes, big sports fan. And I was like, yeah, actually, he goes, we met my Jaguars this year. I realized like no one's ever asked me that question ever about anything. And I was like, listen to NFL Cover Zero on the iHeartRadio app Apple Podcast or wherever you get your podcasts. Well, W. We'll do the drawing later in the show. Our regular cast on hand tonight. Mike Mills, our engineer taking care of us. Russ Jackson back at the station. Fran and his lovely wife. Phyllis here at the moment. Fran is blocked by the so I can I think Fran's hiding from me. He's perfectly positioned. But Phyllis has her own personal speaker. It's only granted to select people. And the select person would be her only. There's no one else coming here saying, when I come, do I get a speaker? No, only Phyllis gets a speaker. She is dedicated. Yes, she's going to maybe she should sign the sign. Phyllis are dedicated. Yeah, they should sign the side of it and personalize it. Oh my god. I had something significant. I was going to say, you changed your order tonight. Please explain this because you are a creature of habit. What caused you to deviate from your, I never get the name of it. Try, try, try, tip, stay case.
It was that order every day for the next 15 second shows on a fish. I don't want to upset you. What was his homeboy? Because it goes back to superstition. And I need to change it off. Of course. I need. And I need to cycle. Oh, yeah, I didn't know. So you reach a point with it when you're superstitious. You do something consistently enough. You then have to change to get a result that I'm getting in certain areas that I deem reasonable or not met. Then we have to change the analytics. Yeah, the analytics. Then there was no analytics. So purely on a gut feel kind of thing. And if certain things happen, of course it is. By the way, I was thinking I thought a lot about our conversation in your anger at my superstition. Yes. Are they superstitions or are they more are they routines? Are you are you asking me about mind or you about yours? Or in general, all this conversation. Like I mean, you call them superstition. I call them routine. Oh, no, no, no, no, remember, see for the record, this all started with the segment you do with Moe where he asked you if you were superstitious.
And then you divulged all that public information, which is saved on podcasts for eternity to listen to. So you're you're the one who classified it as superstition. Well, maybe now if you want to track and reclassify it as routine. Yes, that's what I'm going to do right now. So that makes me think that you've thought that you need to make it less weird. Let's just call it routines. Actually, I just saw how disappointed you were in me and I felt I was there. You were. You were. I have said you let him down. I have said you know, if it is I point up like a almost a pedal stole of how I view you and I'm like superstitions. Well, the pedal still just got cut. There you go. So there I go. I'm trying to change your mind. Anyway, right. That's good. All right. Let's talk about these Bengals offense. The great debate of what they're doing. Why they're doing it. If they can change it, I want to go back to Joe Barrow creating quite a stir on Sunday when he was asked about a game where they barely ran the football. They said, you know, would you like more balance? And he said, I think we should throw it more. Dan Horde asking yesterday to clarify if he really meant the rest of the season or just
specifically in Sunday's game. Here's Joe in answering that. I clarify something from Sunday. After the game, when you said we should throw it more in something that out of that. We're talking specifically about the game situation as opposed to in general. You know, I might have been a little emotional after the game. No, obviously you want to have balance as an offense. And you know, the run game wasn't good enough on Sunday. And you know, I feel confident in myself that you put it in my hands and I'm going to make it work. And obviously, like you said, it's very situational. You know, when you get into a game like Sunday and you know, they're really good defense, really good front seven. And I felt like we were we were we were moving the ball pretty well in the past game. And I could have been better in spots to help our guys and not put our defense in bad positions with the turnovers. So yeah, we got to be more balanced going forward and big part of that is the run game. Joe Barrow yesterday in rock, we're going to go ahead and make this our hot topic of the
week. Brought to you by Hudson oil fueling champions on and off the field. And this comes down to that great clash of what what you do well versus what you might be uncomfortable with, but probably need to do more of and the balancing of that plus I know there's just a lot of play here that you just and we both read the piece by Ben Solick this week from ESPN. And his basic premise was and I didn't realize the trend was was going this way. There are fewer shotgun snaps this year in the NFL. The rate of shotgun snaps around the NFL, the lowest since 2017. There's a clear shift to more under center and yet the Bengals and to their credit, they realized that and started to work on it. But it's just it's not coming. Does that mean you bail on it? Or does that mean you just have to figure out a way to be better at it? Well, let's separate run game from under center. Let's say that conversation. Yeah, so here's how I look at it. When it comes to the run game. Okay, first of all, you come into that game knowing that the Jags have the best run
defense in the NFL and they've held what 20 was a 21 opponents or rushers under 75 yards. So you already know that coming in. So it's not like it's a flute thing. I give you play a defense as middling in terms of stopping the run and all of a sudden they're just stopping your run early. I think you have a little more confidence and we already know that these guys are good at that. And the Bengals had 71 offensive plays and I just don't believe that you keep banging your head against the wall when you know those players know the offensive line knows, that Taylor knows the ring game ain't happening today. Maybe we had some things kind of skimmed up. We thought we'd give us an advantage. They countered and it's not happening. So I just don't think you beat your head against the wall trying to do something that clearly is not going to happen and go to your strength, which is throwing the football. I asked Charlie Goldsmith last night, Charlie's chalkboard. He was on with me on sports talk and I asked him. I said, is the time and effort they're putting into under center worth it right now based on the lack of results they're getting. I said, is there hurt in it? Do you think? Listen to what Charlie said. I think the second part
is the ultimate question. You know, the most telling thing out of everything that happened on Sunday from a schematic perspective was they came out of halftime and tried really tried three attempts at explosive under center plays. And then after that, those three plays were bad from a result's perspective. They didn't run another under center play the rest of the game. So clearly something, some conversation happened that went from the Bengals saying, we're going to push to this, we're not doing this anymore. So it's that emotion that I think it is really interesting and would be the important people behind the curtain. But I absolutely think they need it. I've been thinking a lot about the 2022 Bengals because that's the team that abandoned the under center offense. And they were great. We love the 2022 Bengals from a, you know, how they play perspectives. And when everything is perfect, you can win a Super Bowl playing that way. But I was thinking then about the 2022 AFC title game, Tyler Boyd exits with an injury. Of course, the line was banged up as well. They double teased. They double jammed on the Bengals offense didn't have the counter that they needed in that moment. And they didn't make it to the Super Bowl. You know, if
something that, you know, you're not counting on happened in January, you're going to need to pivot and you need things to pivot to. And that's why I keep the under center offense alive. Child of Goldsmith last night on Sports Talk, rock from the Benz Solak piece. And this is, this is more under center specifically. He notes, when you play in only one mode opposing defenses can tee off. He says the Jaguars were in cover two more than triple their rate of the first three weeks of the season. The Bengals had no way to get them out of it. I would equate it to baseball. The picture you, you may be able to throw a hundred and one. But if you keep throwing a hundred and one eventually they're going to time and it hit it. It's like not having a curveball to go to. Doesn't this team if they're, if they're shotgun is their fastball, don't they need something in their arsenal that is a breaking ball to pivot at times during a game or not? Are you leading into your fastball just being your dominant pitch? Yes, but there's other
change up pitches than the under center offense. I feel like we're so fixated on this under center thing. Okay, but my, and I get that, but then my response is why is it so complicated? It shouldn't be, if, if everybody else doesn't like it. Okay, well, maybe, maybe, Joe Roe doesn't like it. Maybe that's not, he doesn't, he doesn't like it because he's not good at it. He's not good at it because he doesn't like it. Okay, I think I'm glad you said that because it's not like it's rocket science here. If the trend around the rest of the league is to go more under center and away from the shotgun, it can't be that hard, but I, I think there, and that's why I asked Charlie, do you believe there are hearts in it? I wonder if Joe's hearts in it and I don't know that it is. If every week on this, on this show at, you know, whatever, 830, you had to do a segment on knitting. You would be like, I don't like this in the, in the producer, why don't you better at that segment? The rating is our terrible, but I don't like it. So you're not good at it because you don't like it. Joe Bro doesn't, doesn't like this. It's something he, he,
but then there's, and I think he feels, and I feel there's other things you can do. There's other schemes and, you know, I'm not saying a band in the Royale. Now, I think you band the run game in the Jags game. You came with this, you came with a plan. Okay. It wasn't good. So in that moment, you're not going to, you'll redo some scheme. Okay, you only get seven to 70, they got 70 plays and this is a dumb example, but I know this from calling off fences and youth games. Like, if something doesn't work, you're going to go away from it because you only get so many snaps at it. So it's like, wow, why keep trying to make this thing that isn't working? And I don't like it. Be one thing if I didn't like it and it was working. Then you, but if you as both of them, you're like, well, ah, but, but see this, I, and I understand that point, but the stubborn part of me says that sounds like a little kid who's just saying, but it's too hard. I think, I mean, Joe Burrows and he lead quarterback. I just can't. It, it sounds like they're saying,
but I don't want to do it. Dad, it's too hard. And I would say, son, you're going to have to figure out how to be better at it because, you know, you got to grow up at some point. I'm not calling Joe Burrow a baby, but I mean, my god, he's smart enough to realize under center offense makes them a better offense. So figure out a way to execute it. But that's what I don't get. I don't get just giving it up because you're not good at it. My argument is get better at it. Give me a point in this off season or preseason or four weeks through this season where that thing is just hummed where it's just looked really good. It never is. But and say, what does that say about Zach Taylor and the offensive coaches? They spent the entire off season working on it. They spent training kit putting it in. And it's a, it's a mess a weekend or four weeks in. But they get nothing out of it. How is that possible? But do you ask no one Ryan to throw a, a, a, a knuckle curve? No, he has plenty of other good pitches. Why are you going to ask him to throw a pitch that he hates and isn't good at? He's got plenty of other pitches. You know what I'm saying? Like, I don't
think it's, I know I'm now, you know what now surprises me. Not as much about the superstitions. You didn't think I was going to come out with this. No, I like this. But you're, you're now opening the door to your accepting quitting. You're a quitter. Not quitting. You're just quitting. No, you're quitting. But at some point, I don't like the results. I'm not going to do it anymore. It'd be one thing if this was like the first week and then we're just going to try this. But at no point in the off season and the preseason, in the, in the, in the game so far this year, had they been good at it. So at some point, do you keep banging your head? We've got to win games, man. We got to do stuff that works like right now, like right now. So maybe it's not that maybe there's a thing. Look, he clearly likes to be able to seek the defense so he can, you know, manipulate the covers. And he is one of the best in the, and so maybe there's something that complements that, you know, sometimes different. And then have to be, you know, we throw the ball. It doesn't be the running shoe. We don't have to throw the ball 80 times a game, but there's some something little change up. Okay. More of a screen because it's some, okay. I get where you're going
that because at some point, I would think you're going to need, there will be a moment like Charlie laid out. There'll be a moment where that will take you so far. And there's going to be that moment. You've got to be able to go to something else. And if it's not there because it was too hard, but you're losing, but your season is over. But answer me this. Yes. It does a smart coach implement the system that he wants or does he implement the system that best fits his players? Well, you ask a triple option team. You can say, well, you know, God, you know, Texas Tech, they throw the ball down the field, you know, blah, blah, do you ask them to do that? They say, no, we don't have that's not what we do. But we do other things. We don't have, we don't throw fastballs the entire time. We have a little change ups, but it's not that particular change. And I would say in that, in that analogy, we're not asking, I think under center is something very basic. Triple option is something very complicated. I think we're, I think the Bengals are failing
at something very basic. And that's what's frustrating to me because an under center offense isn't reinventing the NFL or offense. No, it's not. It's the very genesis of what football was. But I will say this, these quarterbacks are coming out of college now. Don't go under center a lot at all. I was okay, but they never go to that point. Why do you think league wide shotgun rates are at their lowest since 2017? That tells me that the majority of the league is saying, we've got to evolve. And in all things are simply, they cycle through. And the trend is pushing us towards that. And yet the Bengals aren't good. So the Bengals are getting further behind the curve. If your teams are using the shotgun and the Bengals are resistant to that, then they're falling further behind the curve of the NFL. That's frustrating. But why do we feel the need to conform to the under center offense? I think we're using two different, I think we're using two different work choices. I love this conversation. You're saying conform. I'm saying just get better. It
just reasonably get better at it. I'm not asking you to conform and change your behavior. We're a month in the season. You're not getting better. You're not learning. Well, then you don't want to say you failed in the off season. You can say that. That's why I was just going to say, then let's just say they failed at this. Okay, great. But the reality is we're in week five, man. We got to win games. And do we continue to do this thing that we've tried it? We've wanted to work. We've scheme to, we've tried to work. And it's just ain't working or do we do something? Hey, let's we do this other thing. Well, let's maybe find another little wrinkle off of that and do that. And by the way, our quarterback probably likes that more than he does the under center stuff. I just think the off season is the time for trying things. And the preseason is seen how that works. And if you have success, then you build on it. But if you don't, you kind of got to go away from it because it'd be different if you had 400 snap 200 snaps in a game. You get 70 and it's seen it's you get 70, but it really feels like you get about 15 because every snap
matters. And I just don't know why you do something that it's just doesn't seem to fit. I'm having a very difficult time accepting the fact that you're making sense at a lot of this. Take a time now. And we'll discuss the game that brought us together because nothing is off limits. Do you remember your initial reaction when Fox called you to be a part of the World Cup? I was like, no, I don't want to do it. You said no. I played with players that didn't, I don't think that they really truly loved the game. I found the love with the ball at my foot. But in my head, it was the long game. It was like, I don't care what I'm being asked to do at Fox. I'm going to go get some reps and I'm going to learn it and love it and embrace it. And I'm Adam Pranaka of the Greatest Generation and Greatest Trek. We decided to start a golf comedy podcast because we're both big golf lovers and we wanted to spread that joy and it's called Three-Put Bogey. It's coming from the perspective of golfers who are sometimes good enough to hit two great shots in a row, but almost never good enough to hit three. And a Three-Put Bogey is kind of the purest expression of that. Every golfer knows what that's like. Obviously we're going to talk a lot about the game of golf, how absurd it is, and how fun it is, and how vexing and frustrating. But more than anything, just how much we love the greatest game in the world. We love it anyway. We're putting these out every Friday morning for your weekend golf routine. This is the show about sharing our experiences on the golf course and how absurd and funny they can be. And that's what Three-Put Bogey is. It's Three-Put Bogey everybody out every Friday. You can listen to it now on the

A clear choice for windshield repair and replacement shorter segment here. Just a quick thought on this and I mentioned earlier in the week. Zach talked to the press conference on Monday about the so he said paraphrasing. Nobody wants to hear this, but I saw the silver linings in this in that game on Sunday and I like my team's fight and they played hard. And I wonder sometimes if Zach who is who's reputation he's a very positive person and that positive like Ra Ra I believe in you I've got your back almost kind of like college mentality helped him build the culture of this team. There's no question. It took him to the Super Bowl and took him back. I wonder sometimes if Zach needs to be more of the get the red ass a little bit more with this team and a lot behind the scenes we'll never see. He was very boystraced in the locker room and believing in his guys he said on Sunday, but I wonder
though having been around coaches. Can you do you have to state don't you have to stay true to your character and if you change it appears fake or desperate maybe well that's I was going to say I mean I agree with you I would like to see a little more red ass to use your term. I would like to see a little more fire, but that's not who you hired. If you want fire and you want all that then hire Nick Sabin, but if you want you know calm and cool and hey we're you know we're always positive because yes you don't know the sudden one of coach who by all accounts over the years we've talked about it often. Players love him right and that seems to be a good thing and they feel like he's genuine and if all of a sudden this tries to be someone he's not do you further damage where things are right now. Yeah and there is I mean there is something to be said for you can speak to this. The even keeled consistent nature players. Langey consistent. Yeah yeah there you go. But you know you know it's also within you know 10 plus yeah you know all 15 plus. And as you mentioned that I think in Tampa Bay if I'm right wasn't it they moved on from Dungee and it turned
to John Groot and Groot and Dungee are like polar opposite it was just a different personality that that at the moment they thought the bookeneers needed and it got him to a super bowl. All right and get Dungee then wins a super bowl of the cold. I bet that was the conversation in Tampa Bay man we got a good roster here but we just need a little more. Yeah and that's what they went with. Alright that's one hour in the books just like that holy cow when we come back Chad Brendel talks you see football great shoemaker he's back with the high school football tonight preview coming up at 736 Dan Klaskins as your fantasy football coming up at 750. really wasn't all that interested in running the ball like they and rightfully so they want to put the ball in the hands of Noah Fefita yeah but then once they got Cincinnati down they ran right at him and then ran with a ton of success so surprising would probably be that the rest that wasn't that far out of the realm of imagination if you if you analyzed you know the two teams yeah so Chad let me ask you this just a greater question about the big 12 what how do you feel about the strength of the teams in general in the big 12 I mean on the what the AP right now BYU is ranked eight uh Texas Tech 11 but I just feel like the conversation college football is you know SEC big 10 Miami but I just I like your thoughts on on the the big 12 in general and just the strength you feel it it has if any I don't think there's a national championship team like it you know if you're looking at like this team can win a title I don't know that there's one of those
especially now if there was one I've I've I've been on the BYU train all off season and and into the season LJ Martin being out for four to six weeks like that was the heart of their offense and that is a devastating blow for BYU Texas Tech's offense stinks so I don't know how much you like their defense is good but their offense is hard to watch right now um Houston I mean Houston is an underdog this week at Kansas State think about that well so there's not a you know Utah might be the one to to keep an eye on um they they've played really well they have not had I kind of thought they had a lot of guys leave uh when when their coach left they were replacing their entire offensive and defensive lines like it felt like there was
a dip that was coming for Utah and we haven't really seen that dip materialized so maybe it's Utah but I think that's the the main thing Rocky now is you can see Miami as a team that could get back to the national championship game and play for a title Notre Dame I think deserves mention in that conversation and then the FEC and the big 10 teams I just don't think there's a big 12 team you circle and go boy that's a team really like they can get hot in December and win it all but I do think the conference is pretty good at the top with with playoff quality teams is don't think there's anybody you look at and you're like man that that's the team that could really go on around Chad uh with the buy these are off this week West Virginia next week self-scouting taking place what um what what would pop up in in flashing lights as the biggest issue uh on in self-scouting and improvement between now and in West Virginia
as as they reflect back on the first five there's probably won't be a problem against West Virginia per se but what are you going to do against they play four teams over their final seven games that are top 20 in the country and run defense and three of them are top 10 if what what are you going to do if you can't run for let's be conservative yeah yeah if you can't run for 150 yards in a game what's the answer and I think some of that has to come from and and so if you'll talk about it Tuesday some of that has to come from Jason French is going to have to take a little bit more chances yeah like if it's working like in that Kansas State game you don't want him putting the ball in harm's way because you're controlling the game on the ground you're ripping off 15 20 25 30 yard games you don't want him taking chances but if you can't run successfully
and and more importantly if you can't create those splash plays with the running game they have to come from somewhere and sometimes you're going to have to put the ball in danger a little bit and and trust your guys to make a play I think that's really what they're going to have to to try to start figuring out over this week and the next week is what is our plan if a team puts seven in the box and we're blocking five on seven to stop our run game what are we going to do when you know we're not running it with great success yeah I got to ask you about the bear cats basketball care source invitation a lender family tennis center outdoors on a tennis court then against Ohio State then Xavier and Dayton of course give me let me break it down to two per question in terms of the look and how how it played out from the idea the concept before we get into actual performance how did it look and feel what did you make it yesterday it was awesome that's what I heard from
everybody yeah that was it's such a great facility like kudos to those folks because they put together a masterpiece of a of a place to hang out and and watch a sporting event loved the sidelines were great just walking around the facility and kind of getting a feel for the vibe around the place just an awesome awesome venue um yeah sure like the the sun was a little bit of a problem and and you know the wind was a little bit more than you would like it to be in a perfect situation but you got those four teams in one place at one time I I couldn't have been more pleased with how the event was was orchestrated taking into account sun shade everything that was factored into the the performances yesterday what did you take away from UC's basketball performance in a lot of my conversations just and been talking to Jared Calhoun he talks a lot about how his
team finished games and like if you watched or listened to to Mo and Terry call that game really Ohio State was was in control for 25 30 minutes of that game you know they're up somewhere between five seven eight points for for most of the game and then you got to about the 10 minute marks Cincinnati walked them down they tied it up with about five and a half minutes left and then outscored them by 11 in the final five and a half minutes they played good defense and more importantly lance did did you know that guards are allowed to go to the rim get fouled and go to the free throw line what how about this jizzle James I don't want to I hate bringing up the but I have to this one's too good yes jizzle James last year played 23 games for the bearcaps how many three throws do you think he took them as 23 games lance oh 26 close 22 oh
Tyler Riley took 16 free throws yesterday oh my goodness oh that's the difference it's it why is it why can't last beacon why couldn't that team you know over west's tenure be consistent on offense because they never got to the line they never got easy points they never put pressure downhill on a defense and they couldn't shoot because you know a lot of it I do think was especially in the first half and then Ohio State side in the second half the sun was beating down on that side of the court where you're looking into it trying to shoot that's going to be really difficult to shoot yeah they only took six threes in the second half and they attack attack attack attack relentlessly at Ohio State and it was the difference in the game and I it's how you have to play offense yep to consistently be good at offense the three point shooting will come it'll go but it can't be as simple as did we shoot it well yes then we probably won did we shoot it poorly
know then we probably lost you have to have other you know mcuse to say you have to be able to dance all the dances yeah and this team now looks like they're going to be able to dance some more dances I like that and Chad I want to go back to just the presentation of the game being out the wars and all that and and obviously a lot of people like there's a lot of buzz about it which means guess what they're probably going to try more of it what what's your thoughts on how the coaches feel about it do they embrace the fact that it's a must see event and there's buzz around it there's more eyeballs and it's kind of fun but I got to deal with the sun and the wind and do on the core what did they like them or would they rather than go away what what's your thought on that I don't think there there there was a you know much of a complaint about it I think the things that were you know factors were things that they signed up for like they knew those things were going to be factors when they signed up to play this game at the tennis center so
I don't know what there really was to be unhappy about there's something that might be coming guys that I think would be incredible the NCAA just started a a change it's going through like the the the councils and whatever of college basketball summer league oh could you imagine a week at the tennis center with the basketball courts down and having Kentucky Indiana Ohio State Louisville everybody coming up and spending for like the Bahamas trip right yeah in August Texas A&M was there Cincinnati was there um Arkansas was there and Bapu was there and then South Carolina showed up later it would basically be like doing that event but the teams with
Brown Rob and play each other as opposed to playing teams from Canada and other international teams how amazing would that be to set that thing up in you know I think the problem I guess would be the the tennis like the why they built it but I'm getting like chill yes that would be all it'd be incredible yeah all right um you've got all of this covered and more at Birkhead Journal explain preview T's lay out what they're going to find at Birkhead Journal dot com a lot of coverage yesterday uh from the the event uh we'd keying and often uh bass both have stories up on the website we've got a podcast up on the website uh and then we'll get ready for next week at West Virginia and rock I don't know how much West Virginia you've watched I've not watched much have rich Rod has pat white and Steve Slayton back in in Morgan sounds right here yeah that's what I
hear maybe I got a good the only two uh programs in the country running for more yards than West Virginia right now our Air Force and Army oh geez I was going to guess Northwestern but yeah they're running the wing key West Virginia West Virginia is the number one like F-State power for program at almost 300 yards of game on the ground there might be there might be a thousand yards as bad as West Virginia's defenses there might be a thousand yards on the ground in Morgantown next Saturday and then wow oh man all right thank you sir we'll talk next week appreciate it gentlemen have a great night Chad Brett don't bearcage journal dot com we come back more on the Bengals defensive side of things are defensive play the game and more I want to ask rock about quarterbacks uh tapin the football and and what uh

I was like no I don't want to do it you said no I played with players that didn't I don't think that they really truly loved the game I found the love with the ball at my foot but in my head it was the long game it was like I don't care what I'm being asked to do at Fox I'm gonna go get some reps and I'm gonna learn it and love it and embrace it he said this group of people will never be in the same room as part of the same team ever again in your life and it is your job to make sure that you enjoy the moment you're proud of what you accomplish together listen to whatever it takes with Carly Lloyd and Jenny Taft on the iHeart Radio app apple podcast or wherever you get your

with blood centers hocks worth donors save lives close to home who you save and ever drive water proofing if your basement leaks call ever dry it's not dry till it's ever dry we're going to make that play you just heard boy a muffet called by Dan Horde our defensive play of the game brought to you by O'Connor a choney and leave the attorneys you know attorneys you trust visit OAL-law dot com all right couple of different levels of conversation related to this tags mentioned and in tracks has it on his ex twitter feed the conversation with Jordan battle earlier today and Jordan set of Malik Willis the uh... my mid-office quarterback quote he has a little slight tap before every throw so i feel like we could use that as a key to break on the ball he likes to tap the ball before he throws it or he takes his hand off the ball and that gives the read it gives us a read on that he's obviously dangerous with his feet we know uh... about that third and long they'll run quarterback draws and he goes on to kind of give it a
little scouting report on on Malik Willis i guess the question would be if you have if you've uncovered through scouting a a tell for lack of a better word something the quarterback does tap in the ball with his hand before he throws it why would you it seems you give up any advantage by publicly disclosing that you're aware of it duh yeah i don't know if you can understand why you do this and you could even say hey if you want to be wait before the record i think that's the first time i've ever heard you use the word duh and then the last guy keeps going this um anyone think of it if you want to be cute with the median ningo hey we would there's something uh a fundamental thing that the quarterback does we think we've picked up on uh that we really think we can use our advantage that would be acceptable but why do i broadcast what exactly that thing is i don't know now i will say Malik Willis is not the only quarterback that taps i would say the majority of quarterbacks
tap the ball the four day throw Joe burrow taps the ball before he throws you know times now is his more exaggerated you know elongated whatever but i always thought as a defensive player yeah you like that when the quarterback does the pat because that gives you a split second indicator of when that ball is coming out yes you know because the ball snapped the shot clock's already going off your head one one thousand two and thousand you get around two and thousand three one thousand and you know that that pat that ball is coming out and gives you just a little bit of a break i assume that's what he's talking about i would think that if i'm out golden i might be like Jordan come over here something in my office please could could you please refrain from publicly revealing anything we must cover hey how old you have you know this is hard enough it's hard enough to win a football game in the NFL and i got to deal with this you he probably he probably had scouts like look at this over the course of 75 games and battle about it somebody was probably excited to come into the office like i got it i got it i got
a tell i look what he does jordan come on man the way come on you know what i think you left out was man our scouts were really excited when they can't told us this you won't believe it now now maybe yes maybe this is this is like a false fly operation maybe he's getting inside the link willis's head there he does in fact do that but he's going to get another tell there you go now we're in uh we're watching there there's two games on the you're directly tied to will talk later rocky's road but liberties one of the games millie kyl has played at liberty and you called one of these games it was his first game at liberty this was i want to say this 2020 like covid like 2020 2021 one of those two yeah because he was originally an all burn and then he transferred to liberty and there was a lot of you know hype around him and his potential and all that and i don't but when i recall you didn't have a great game in merby like uh uh but then i mean you give him a lot of credit he's he worked a lot and made his way found his way into the league and he's got that big contract yeah um which is pretty significant for for a backup so yeah good for him
we'll talk more of millie can the dolphins coming up in the uh eight o'clock hour great shoemaker around the corner at seven thirty six uh we were on the defensive side of things so let's stay there with just a quick final thought uh it it it kills me that i i think they are now i think the number i looked at earlier this week the bengals are giving up i think it's two times as many yards per game to tight ends then the either the league ab i think it's the league average they're giving up two times as many yards to the tight ends and i saw note how few times the bengals corners were thrown at targeted and it clearly they're not being targeted because they're targeting the linebackers in the middle of the field and it just it's amazing here's a larger question can we get a different problem here here that's the thing the kill and go ahead just top of the tight end the you know in the middle of the tackle and the ability to break tackles as a right i feel like those same things we talk about three different one give me a different one give me a way to make that is where that's the genesis not to get off on another zack tangent but that's the genesis of my
frustration was that because it seems like the the cycle of talking points just keeps churning and they're always the same thing i'm like how how can it always be the same thing eight years in that that means you're not taking care of any of these things kills me not getting worked up or refused to get worked up i like worked up lands i'm gonna can you can you give us one more duh duh there you go he's rocky i'm lads it's the round table show presented by since today i'm gonna use that as a drop his will he would say that's a good that's a good one the round table show presented by since it had a tax resolution powered by tof sheldon long mix and wilder 700 w back to school is here and you know what that means dirty rush is on as campuses come back to life and brush week kicks into high gear we're taking you inside the mysterious journey of a sorority girl from pledging to initiation and just about everything in between joining me jia judeice daisy ken and jenn bessler we're letting you in on the secret handshakes passwords traditions and rituals

and he goes we met my jaguars this year i realized like no one's ever asked me that question ever about anything and i was like do you want to listen to NFL cover zero on the iHeart radio app apple podcast or wherever you get your podcast well w all right let's keep it moving along in this Thursday night of the round table show nine o'clock our final destination we've got a giveaway at nine o'clock gotta be here to win we've navigated our way through some bengal's conversations um you see football conversation around the corner is dan clascons with fantasy football but for the moment let's put the spotlight on high school football there's one guy we turned to high school football tonight show tri state football dot com he has for the record been hobnob at around seeing like big musical acts and uh... hit the town but he's
come back he's back and we're back with great shoemaker are you i am wonderful i have missed you guys over the last couple weeks and yeah hobnob for nights at uh... permanent beyond and the following week i went up to uh... field of dreams in iowa there was all high state football nice nice and then plants i did and rocky you being a night in the enoughless guy made my first trip to say no most and had the shrimp cocktail oh goodness clear your nostrils and drive us yeah it was worth it and then the slippery noodle to end everything off on Sunday oh man you checked a lot of boxes excellent excellent very very much bucket list we can for sure excellent excellent all right let's get to some high school football let's uh... start with at highlands highlands rolling in elders defense struggling boy you got that right way and uh... you know elder started off the year five and
over but they've lost their last uh... two games to say next and muller defense and time has given up eight hundred ninety seven yards but here's the disturbing fact about that elders defense is given up sixteen a twenty four third down convergence and three of four fourth down convergence so they're not getting off the field they give up sixty six points in those two games and they will give up thirty points in their first five victories so yeah they're in trouble and uh... highlands like you said they're red hot they want six in a row after using their opener their average is forty seven point five points per game in those uh... six wins and it's just i mean those two teams they're going in different directions but i do say this uh... both things have wins over cup cap elder want a little bit more of cup cap and highlands did uh... but elder did play uh... cup cap at home and highlands played them on the road so that's one factor there i think it's going to be a very close game very high scoring game and the quarterbacks are going to steal the show in this one uh... they're mirror images of each other elder see senior quarterback
came to east up he leads the gcl south and passing yards and it's second and passing uh... uh... uh... rushing yards uh... it is a camera for twenty two touchdowns on the year eighteen through the year four on the ground uh... during this two game losing street for elder he is also not miss the piki's card forty two fifty four per six hundred big yards you know seven touchdown six touchdowns to the year one one rushing so it's not his fault on that end but uh... soccer quarterback at highlands rice arm showing is a real deal he's starting to get some offers uh... he's also a dual threat quarterback leads the team on rushing yards there over nine hundred as well over five hundred rushing and like uh... east that he's also combined for twenty one touchdowns passing and rushing so very interesting game here one thing i really think is interesting about highlands is orange strong doesn't have like he's got nine hundred yards passing but he is at nineteen different receivers through
seven games and the guy who says the most catches on that team at sixteen nobody else has more than nine so wow they they they have a shuttle that's running out at it and and on the end so i'll be interesting to see if the elder defense can keep up with the uh... speed and uh... the versatility of the island's office all right great we got a southwest of how conference title and playoff implications at stake when talawanda takes on Harrison Harrison well cats uh... six and one how you seeing this yeah so this is the last of the southwest uh... Ohio conference uh... gay or titles to be warned uh... and these two teams are sitting at six and one each for both in division two region eight so not only the battling battling for the the lead title they're also looking to get a first round by and the playoffs and hate to second round game right now in the computer race to extreme seven weeks Harrison are sitting at number three in the rankings and talawanda at six so um... both other
the winner here is really go set themselves up nicely to get a first round by in the playoffs stuff but here's the interesting thing about this this series they've been playing for twenty straight years Harrison holds an eighteen to two advantage in this series over the last twenty years so uh... you know i i i want to go with Harrison especially at home in this one and i also like this about Harrison they get up they got a pair of defensive backs that over the last two games have combined for twenty three interceptions been marked here in here and you want to order a new way you've got 11 over the last two years and jack tenere has got twelve over the last twenty games so the 23 over the last twenty games for the wild cats which is something guys this is something i've never seen i've never seen two guys in a backfield in a high school or do you guys are backfield high school with double digit intercepts yeah same team man i mean cuz usually go away from one great and the other time the guy capitalizes all the interceptions but you can't do that in this
Harrison which i think is really cool all right alter at mcnic sole possession of first place in the conference up for grabs yeah really cool here story here both teams sitting at five and two in the gcl koat both at two and oh in the league uh mcnic hasn't won a league title since 2017 they ripped off four straight wins after starting one and two they've been fantastic their quarter back to have in sandposses 41 for 57 for six hundred eighteen yards and nine touchdown zero sections during their four game winning streak after starting one and two and three through five interceptions and just two interceptions in their first three weeks of the season so they're rolling right along and then defensive end for hamilton max hamilton he has eight and a half sacks you have working that have tagels for losses just in the last three games alone he's been a wrecking crew for the rocket's defense and i but that said i don't think he's gonna have that kind of night because alter is going to run the football with drew crypts he's a Miami of Ohio
big fantastic running back in the end that's the fact he's gonna he's gonna be one of those kids we talk about about three years at Miami of Ohio group grips don't feel to get him and here's the other thing cool about this these teams are both jockeying for position division three region 12 computer where mcnic sitting at number nine in the ratings alter at number ten so neither one of them's in a position yet to get a first round buying the playoffs and both of them still have number uh baby who's number twenty one in the bliss twenty five rankings uh both left on the schedule and famous one the last eight you see i'll go out title so uh there's lots to be still played for in that you see alcoa ed's and it's it's gonna be a heck of a night over at a fan station stadium on the inside of town all right great lastly we've got a couple of one beaten teams going at it uh the huge big red at ccpa what do you see in this how about that this is a cool story everybody uh so these two teams weren't scheduled to play when the season
started woodward was supposed to play against use this week and cca ccpa was supposed to play shoulder both those teams are combined two and eleven on the year but both of them had open dates and so did big red or uh using ccpa they switched the games around so we can have a match up seven and eight seven and no teams pretty cool it just happened to work we have Jeff Cardiall talking about it on the free game portion of high school football tonight but what's really cool about this is this is history making all over the Cincinnati Public League ccpa is seven and open the first time in school history 17 season for the program the lines have never won more than eight games in a year use the seven and a no for the first time in a hundred and two years and they're lucky to go they are looking to go for eight wins for the first time since nineteen and eight and only their second time in their career and here's the other cool thing about Hughes and I really rooting for him Jaylen Engelman their head coach is just 25 years old
he had a former win once stand out and wow what did he have to get the job the players what his his uncle retired last year he was an assistant there and the players wanted him and he's having a blast at twenty five years old seven and a the c max school it's just it's you couldn't write a better business story than that oh what a cool story absolutely all right then look ahead it tomorrow night set up the high school football tonight show it all that's going on yeah so that ccpa Hughes gave it's on Saturday but we'll have Jeff Cardiall the head coach ccpa talking about it talking about his team that's a great one in the pre game portion also had David Drandsman the head coach of Taylor he's one and six right now but they're playing seven of no deer park and he's talking he talks about adversity he played five different quarterbacks are down on their third string quarterback after seven weeks oh my god so yeah five different guys take steps last week and he talked about how you handle adversity and it was really great interview with him and then Nick Osborne from West Western Brown he talks there he's still
in a battle for playing the sba c title they got the Richmond they're one and one in the league and it's still a link that's pretty much open for a division title even though they're sitting at two of five they're a young team two again another adversity situation great great great coaches with that and then after the same next was sal game he was sub one and alv and I am be back on until 11 o'clock coach and I've used a scoreboard updates all night long work forch spot for box sports 1360 and he has 153 excellent excellent uh well yeah I got about a minute get well what was um what was field of dreams like uh band task again we happened to catch you with a day with a bunch of Ohio State fans and they had uh so like one of the guys in the farm was like hey catch this at Iowa fans being going oh hey you know everybody when I know and everybody and I went w a so it was awesome it was a great trip it feels a dream if you it's out the middle where it is it's time I've made plays out there highly recommend the trip it's
cool place excellent good deal glad you enjoyed it uh good catch it up and uh we'll talk next week sounds good guys have a great weekend you as well great show maker high school football tonight show take a time out come back flip the script to fantasy football with Dan claskins we're at long next in wild with the round table show presented by Cincinnati tax resolution and powered by tof showed in 700 wlw back to school is here and you know what that means dirty rush is on as campuses come back to life and brush week kicks into high gear we're taking you inside the mysterious journey of a sorority girl from pledging to initiation and just about everything in between joining me geodudeis daisy ken and genfessler we're letting you in on the secret handshakes passwords traditions and rituals we'll reveal what really goes on behind closed doors from the sleeping porch to the president's room whether you're a pie pie or a kaya adult a gamma or an ad pie dirty rush takes you deep inside Greek life and it is wilder than you can

pretty good shape but don't get comfortable four teams are off in each of the next three weeks so we got a plant ahead here plant ahead on the waivers on the wires don't always use that last bench spot uh the player that can help you this week think about next week what quarterback are tight ends on a bike grab that replacement week early it's especially valuable at your thinner positions you got to look beyond one match up bottom line good fantasy managers they react to last week great ones are already preparing for next week interesting all right let's uh go ahead and let's get the injuries i know the more jackson has warmed them and plenty of others yeah they're doubt about it we'll start a quarterback uh as you mentioned rock he Lamar jacks him at this ankle issue did not practice uh yesterday didn't go today Tyler Huntley looking like he's gonna start here at land in Atlanta so Lamar managers need to have a backup plan ready better news for jaden dangles with his elbow issues looks like he's good to go uh a little bit of a depletive receiver course uh core there so that could also impact his value say quam barkley debonte
both looking like they're gonna miss the game in englo with the hamstering injury there said and uh Dallas gotter just about the hegel's some wounded birds brief haul with his quad issue a week to week thing doesn't look like he's gonna play in week five beyond race with he is a a little bit better off than his teammate comment on guy both of them guys to track on friday as will be remand rage Stevenson i know you guys have talked a ton about jimmar and tea already here but uh clearly that's gonna have a big fantasy impacting if one or both of them said micah sick you a significant boost in a sudden fantasy sleeper malik neighbors with his issue just in jefson and terry mccorn three more wideouts will see what happens on friday all right let's do our weekly look at the studs duds and sleepers you've got oh yes let's start with that stud and we've got jerry golf at the top of the list this week at quarterback one of the highest scoring games projected for week five Arizona Detroit we know the cards have been vulnerable through the air and golf has plenty of weapons from my favorite quarterback plays this week the other stud kyrin williams
been a stud all year and don't just buy the idea this is a split back so because over the last two games 47 carries and cheches combined with just 14 for Blake gorman all the money touches are going to kyrin lane she's a high end rb one on the duds with all the injuries we talked about for the eagles jaylin hurts outside my top 12 actually outside my top 15 this week at quarterback so they got jackson bill it's a good defense no weapons not good fucky herving we're also not high on him tonight burst out within a couple sleepers carnell date and idea likely a wideout there for ten and see and the giant's tight in dan is you know for well it is never too late for listeners to get into the do good fantasy sauerick cap challenge tell them how they can get involved yeah lans were real excited obviously a lot of people with injuries made their fantasy seasons are going baby they're not everybody a whole week is a whole new line up a whole new chance to win it's all to help our veterans through d a b uh... think you can build a perfect line up each week

the two sisters and they've assumed control the team since their dad passed away rock the the controversy has the debate let's say has ramped up again because for those who don't know she is down on the sidelines during the game and she has a notepad and she keeps notes and she's wears an earpiece headphones that gives her access to the coaches uh... headsets she can't talking to me to get with them but she can hear what's going on and and she has said in the end she wants to educate herself on on the game and the organization's business and how they they operate football wise and the approach to the game and and she said i have like a fifth grade reading level when it comes to understanding the game just the basic concepts i want to know more there there continues to be a pushback to her presence on the sidelines do you have an objection to an owner seeking knowledge of what's going on and why by taking notes on the sidelines yeah i remember we talked about this last year and i i said i was i was for it why switch my mind
oh i'm i'm i'm kind of a foot plopper yeah i'm kind of over it i i think a couple times is fine it's like two straight seasons you know down on the sideline asking her brain what's going on got the headset on i just i don't know i just like everyone's got a tip to around on eggshells i just and i would say this if she was a man or woman anything i just think a little bit was okay i think it's just kind of play itself out a little bit yeah i i've read um one concern is her access to the headsets of what's going on the communication between the coaches might lead to the coaches obviously not as comfortable or maybe not saying things in the way they normally would i don't know how much there is to that but i have something to that yeah i think yeah i just wonder the week to week why it couldn't be does it have to be week to week i mean is it that's wrong yeah yeah a little bit how much i mean i understand hey who wouldn't if if i owned the team i'd want to know what's going i'd want to have a better understanding but i can't see doing it every week i
mean there's only i would think there's only so many notes you can take i mean what what what are you looking for i guess it leads you to wonder what are you looking for beyond taking notes or i just like to distract a coach from like doing things and saying things that are natural and more on like hey there's the boss i got to kind of say something this way i love the fact i i love the fact that it's not a hands-off because a lot of owners you'd be lucky if they know the player's names they just own the team so i appreciate the desire to know more i just i mean i know most do you know does she is she a practice because i'd have no problem with her being a practice but i just wonder why it has to be the the game every week and taking notes every game you'd see i know you just seem to think they're reach a point where okay i've gathered enough maybe now have a conversation on what i've learned not having to gather every single game i don't that that's that's right for you know when you took over the ownership of the team was that last year okay a couple
games you know really you've kind of swimming uh you know really swimming here let me figure out a little bit what's going on with my team but at this point it let's say looks showy but it but all it's just kind of like i don't know it's like enough i just think it's kind of enough you can go the box you can get the you can get the headset you know audio stuff pumped into you very easily up there i just think it can be distracting for the coaches and the players we've put two hours in the books we've got a big third and final hour to continue he is rocky i'm lance thanks for being with his tonight we'll draw one hour from now which gives you time to get here here would be long next day and wilder the show is the round table show presented by Cincinnati tax resolution powered by tof sheldon on 700 wf fog goes fast the patch the carving the marathon of movies you've seen a dozen times and then somehow the candy's gone and it's November bedhead's Halloween collection is for the whole stretch painterly fall landscapes and playful pumpkins for pumpkin picking gingham's

and away we go eight o'clock hour underway on this Thursday night we're hanging out at a long next in-wilder our destination this week and next week it's a three-week run at each of their locations we love all the long next locations and a wilder they certainly take care of us and we love being here we'll do a drawing in less than an hour gotta be in the house to win if you don't have a raffle ticket from are we call them a raffle ticket what are we calling them yeah raffle ticket ask your server and drop in the bucket in front here drawing coming up in 54 minutes from mark mic mic mills taking care of us here rust jacks and back at the station fran his lovely wife philis on hand and uh... we are rolling through two with one more to get to on a variety of subject matters including let's do a little bit more we we started talking about the the offense and the run game and and the issues offensively for this team a couple of things that Tony said on on Monday during bengal's line that stuck with me i thought would be worth discussing
the run game was wofu on sunday of course uh... chasebrow averages one point one yards per carry they carried what fifteen times on the day here's what Tony said about that Monday night on bengal's line as crazy as yesterday's game was in looking at the box store after it that was the most jarring number because of what we had heard about this team they want to be more fiscal they want to be under center they want to run the ball downhill they want to rely on that continuity of those five returning starters on the offensive line coming back and they're going to be at operate more than twelve personnel which helps because you can have drew sample and tanner Hudson and and Eric all in the wrong to help in the running game and in a game you needed it most it disappeared we can't emphasize enough lands jimmar chase left the game in the second quarter if you're playing without the the best receiver in football wouldn't that tend to lead you to believe to run the ball more they didn't have to be one dimensional play action pass is supposed to be designed to get easy completions and help your offensive line against the pass rush they got sacked twice yesterday on play action passes because the run game is not effective enough or threatening enough to set up the play
action so it's one thing to say we're going to go under center we're going to be play action we're going to hit shots down the field if the defense doesn't respect the run game it all stops there toady pike earlier this week on bengal's line and rocked as a former defender i'll defer to you that point about the play action we can talk all you want but if you're a defender you're you're basically laughing at him at this point play action what what what what you're a play action has no effect if you're not running the ball absolutely i just feel like the bengals of course they wanted to run the ball and they i bet you they came in that game feeling really really good about their game plan in terms of the run game it just didn't work and i just feel like maybe they they felt they got a point were clearly we got outskemed or they're they're doing something we weren't ready for we're just not it's not our day right now with this so they wanted to you know in the heat of the moment try to do some things that we're going to help them win the game which didn't work out and we've talked about this before and i think there's something to
i've never viewed zack as let's take even Joe out of it is i've never viewed zack as having the mentality to be physical in nature not dan Campbell right yes not yes yeah i mean yeah yeah i feel like i had coaches reflection of the style of play of their team even the colt was done to we you know done she's not a you're slobber coming out of his mouth we're gonna you know cross your kind of guy we threw the ball a lot and we ran the ball and everything was good too but like yeah i i feel like your team does take on the identity of your coach and that's not a bad thing it's just as what yeah and you mentioned it with with tracks there it's not like this offensive line while it's there's continuity certainly with guys coming back it's not like an offensive line that i would describe as a group of mallers they're not the the hot to you uh go 80s they're not the hogs of the Washington redskins days or or the larry allen Dallas cowboy days there's just i don't want to say they're they're i'm not going to say they're finesse i'm not going to say they're soft
i don't just say i just don't view them is like just not coming out of their nose finger in the ground we're we're gonna plow through you no i agree with that i think every bangles fam would be honest about that um you know what let me let me ask you something about because then and i said this earlier in the week this is more the emotional me than the common sense side of being you know i can get emotional sometimes but i would like to see just one time just maybe the humor me and i almost pay the fine it really bothers me the liberties that defenders take with Joe borough on hits and there was a double shot tag team on sunday were one jaguar hitting blow and arm instead hitting under the chin and there was a flag called in the play but it seems like moron there there's too many occasions where liberties are taken with hits on Joe that go unanswered by the bengal's offensive lineman and i said i would love just once just once and i know i get on him for having too many penalties but i would almost pay a fine to see an offensive lineman
after somebody takes a run at Joe and lays him out i would like to see that offensive lineman yank the helmet off a defender hitting throw it down the field and say stop effing with my quarterback and it would be 15 yards for unsportsman like conduct i just like to see somebody say and be the bodyguard of stop taking shots on our quarterback and by that being irrational with that no but you are going down a road here that is can get philosophical and is it say something about how the bengal's line feels about borough because again like again not to mention again but people didn't take cheap shots of pain man and those guys were up in their face even Stephen nare who was uh well i think i think i think it's more i think it goes back to what we initially said of just the mentality of not i think a mallard type offensive line somebody would get in the grill and yank a helmet off and i just think it i don't want to call him passive and i don't want to call him soft i just don't but you would think of all things you take exception to somebody taking a run at your
quarterback that shouldn't happen i agree i i think it's less of a conversation about how they feel about borough and just that did they're not that you know that that kind of offensive lineman but you know it it's not easy lands to find top notch pass blockers that would have so amazing run blocker those guys they don't draw trees at all so and i think because of that you're you're always making compromises when you're assembling a roster because there's a salary cap and there's a roster limit so you're never going to get a perfect everything so so what can you live without that's basically what you're saying what what do i really need what can i i don't want to live without about if i have to see kind of make some compromises and i think that's how this line has been one more one more comment toney made about dictating terms when you're as good as they are offensively in theory dictating terms instead of reacting to what the other team's doing here's a little bit more from toney on monday night on bengal's line for years it's been they took this
away or they doubled jimmar so we had to go elsewhere and to that point i say no you have to dictate as you mentioned you've got to dictate what other teams are doing and you can't allow another defense to come in and so easily take you out of the game okay they're gonna they're gonna bring an extra safety to jimmar side how about moving them run them in the slot put them in the bunch get them in easy release put them in the backfield there has to be answers i mean you want almost a whole quarter yesterday without a touch for jimmar chase until they got them one right before the end of the court that's not acceptable you've got to find ways to make other teams pay to say okay you're adding an extra hat here we're gonna make you pay there there's no counter right now everything seems difficult for this offense i think that's a great yeah it is because it's not like this is just a a one person dominant team there's i mean t higgins jimmar chase kisikki you know they're chase brown chase brown like there's they're there the options are there to his point where if you do this you're gonna double jimmar then then we can answer with this doesn't seem like there's enough
quick answers and there's also that it's rare i'd love to see the numbers i can probably look up they rarely seem to use like pre snap motion and get guys like free jimmar jimmar running start up it just i don't i i i i think trags use the word this week in his piece of siel and s uh since he with the y dot com static it's just can be a static offensive times i just there just seems to be more that should be there in zack if we're in year eight i think it's very fair to say has appears incapable of drawing uh more out of it and i i just find that very very frustrating i agree i agree yeah all right still ahead let's get into a little bit on the mimey dolphins they are yeah i saw a note this week i think half of their souric cap rock is being devoted to guys no longer on the roster they have rebuilt they traded away they cut to uh and shed a whole lot of money that's
on their books technically against the souric cap but it's a total rebuild in mimey their oh and four we're gonna do that a little bit more on malik willis uh oh injure well you know what before we do that let let me finish off in the binglestot would you subscribe to the theory and not because of the opponent this weekend but trags mentioned it looks like jimmar could play looks like tea because of the the the growing issue the inductor issue they might buy him another week i i would i would understand if jimmar if a tea is say 80 percent let's say 75 80 percent i would totally agree with sitting him this week adding the buy to it and getting him a hundred percent before Baltimore yes rather than playing him 80 percent this week maybe risking a setback or even if not i just i'd rather get it all taken care of at the risk of this week to be prepared for indivision against the ravens you gotta look at it like this there's not a more perfection area you're playing yes the worst team yes now again that that team certainly can win the game but
all things being told that this is a game that you should win yes even without your best players so i i think if he is at that kind of teetering point you take the chance you get the two weeks because you're not going to get another opportunity later in the season let me cover the aFC north quickly brought to you by brand stedders kangaroo hometown proud family operated for 28 years visit go kanga dot net the division as we sit here tonight the browns three and one the ravens three and one steeler's two and two the Bengals are two and two the browns are at the jets this weekend where the jets are a two and a half point favorite that totals only 39 and a half points for the two teams combined the ravens are home to the falcons the falcons are a three point favorite there's questions surrounding Lamar Jackson and the ankle and if he plays training towards probably not playing the colts are at home to the Pittsburgh Steelers at two and two and of course the Bengals in Miami that is your trek around the aFC north when we come back a little bit more on those Miami dolphins and some college football around the corner plus NFL officiating and Peter King

podcast is free WLW in 700 WLW the roundtable show presented by Cincinnati tax resolution and powered by Tofe were at long necks in wilder brought to in part by hoxworth blood centers hoxworth donor save lives close to home who will you save lance pecallister rocky boyman stick around at nine dan carols in you'll take you nine to midnight the opposition on sunday those dolphins oh and four they gave the viking some fits on sunday losing 15 to 10 in Minneapolis oligordin there running back at a vocal homestate nine carries a hundred yards and a touchdown they've got that second round running or linebacker out of texas tech jake abroad regas he had 18 tackles last week unbelievable and he has he has been their defensive star so far we talked about malik willis they gave him a boatload of money which is interesting some teams that
tear down and rebuild it will maybe get a bridge quarterback a veteran maybe not invest a whole lot of money having hold the ship till you get your quarterback they gave him three year 67.5 million dollars on the season malik willis has one touchdown and two interceptions they they parted ways with two in march leaving them ninety nine point two million dollars in dead money they're splitting it over two seasons this year 67.4 million dollars of his money in dead money on the cap next year it'll be about 32 million they cut Tyree kill they cut Bradley chub they traded jalen waddle they invested the fifth pick overall in two and twenty twenty and I remember you know that whole thing with the dolphins and that's when the the conversation was tanking and is tanking right in the NFL and how do you tank and can you actually tank and their their tank led to two and it led to limited success and now we're back to twenty twenty six and they're
they're rebuilding again with a new coach a new general manager and just you they went through a cycle of it kind of well I'm now flashing the red cycle of a rebuild where you get very little out of it and are back to rebuilding again and they're kind of where the bangles were whatever six seven years ago they get they get Joe burrow and the dolphins get to a tag ofola right well but maybe this year now they get you know assuming the bangles do their part this we have maybe they get whatever archmanning or car or something yeah uh early last night on on the round turn not on the round table show on bengal's game plan down the dial on ESPN 15 30 dan horde and Wayne box miller talked with Isaiah smalls who covers the dolphins for the Miami herald here's what he said about the this rebuild version of the dolphins obviously knew it was about time for it to start over but look they bring in Jeff happy bring in John Eric Sullivan and what they have now is a team that obviously very very young very very inexperienced but a team that is growing weak by
weak they play very hard they have a defense that's pre-filed against the run had some you know issues covering the title as of late week but they play very hard and offensively they you know obviously know the Von H and but the offensive line is strong and they believe in Ali Gordon and Jaylen right and he'll still try to run the ball but again it's a team that is very young but very hungry and still searching for that first win and I guess they're hoping it'll be Sunday against the bangles they are certainly offensively challenged they have not scored more than 13 points in a game which is hard to believe in today's NFL they've scored 13 13 10 10 Isaiah said they're young like three times during that sound bite I guess rock on one hand I was going to ask about the difficulties of being oh and four on a rebuilding team but on the other hand if you're if you're a young team young player it's it's an opportunity I mean if you've torn it down and rebuilt it and
you're on this team you have like a clean slate to prove that you deserve opportunities and earn playing time in your career in the NFL on a team that record wise isn't much but the opportunity is right before your very eyes on that team you know that every single player is being evaluated it's not like okay we like these 15 guys no every single player is being evaluated so yeah there's an opportunity for you and guess what if you're you know you probably wouldn't get that opportunity around the chief sort of the eat whatever any of these good teams so a chance to show that you belong and then they get some drafts together and maybe you're a part of the the rebuild here's Isaiah Smalls on their their quarterback situation of the play of Malik Willis takes take a listen Malik Willis has rare arm talent I think that is something that really intrigued this new regime in bringing him in the issue that I found with Malik so far that he sometimes needs to take the easier throw he's a guy that kind of wants the the big money and he'll go long where sometimes look man take
the check down and let the guy run for the first down I think that's been the biggest issue but look the the talent is there he's a guy that can move very well in the pocket to maneuver definitely can use his legs great arm strength but I think sometimes the biggest issue that I see is he needs to take the check down Malik Willis scouting report provided by Isaiah Smalls they've been wofl on third down this year one of the worst in the league I think it's around 35% on third down and Isaiah addressed that issue with his offense take a listen yeah the third down has been really a obtained in the in the butt for the dolphins all year and to me it just comes down to inexperience right do you have a very young wide receiver core you have three rookies snout there on the few of the day-to-day basis whether it's receivers not necessarily running the right routes or running it with poor timing with the quarterback like I think that's the been the biggest issue for me that
I've seen on third down obviously there's been a little bit of issue on that right side with the tackle Austin Jackson and you know he's getting up there in age and it just hasn't looked super positive so they also have these three and eight third and sevens and we've had those third and long it's a little bit difficult to be able to convert and that's what you need you know I go to God to receive a position I think they're still searching for that dolphins also like the Bengals have trouble covering the tight end last weekend TJ Hocken sent of the Vikings had 13 catches on 13 targets for 119 yards against the dolphins defense but again Viking scourges 15 but one the game of 15 10 the final score I did not know you made me wear this during the break there is a local connection to the Miami dolphins do tell yes Sean Duggan who is a former linebacker at St Xavier High School played linebacker at Boston College has worked his way up through the the coaching ranks I mean he was that Hawaii for a couple years and he's talking about
and he is the defensive coordinator for the Miami dolphins wow which is wow I mean I need to train him really I got a video somewhere of me him and Luke Kekeley training which is pretty cold yeah yeah so a great guy he's he's Sean's point because he's not from California he's kind of got this like California kind of cool like laid back talk where he but he's super super smart right like obviously if you're a defensive coordinator but just you know you can tell him talking with him knows the game really well and a young guy and come to happier for him I was speaking of coaching and saying X guys I was struck by the conversation you had with Mo earlier this week for the segment you guys do where I I sense the the itch the the the scratching of the itch might eventually be scratched in terms of you getting into coaching on some level higher than your current level is that fair to say I wouldn't I wouldn't leave it out the the the possible and not the cut not the
NFL or college ranks but perhaps as a high school yeah I can see that I love it I did's my first thing I think about when I wake up and the second you're the last thing I think I want to go to bed is our seventh eighth grade St James first you love that and I can I fully understand not to go deep into it because we don't have a whole lot of time but in talking with Mo you indicated earlier in your career that it's a very transient business and yeah yeah for me in my last couple of years in the league I was I was bounced around a little bit right now is just like God I want to you know we'd love to get back to Cincinnati start a family I was 30 years old kind of thing and you know coaching and stability and being rooted in one place for a while don't that doesn't happen you know you got to be willing to make that sacrifice at that time I was not so but yeah maybe at some point down the future I would love to I don't know how guys do it because I'll look week to week whether it's a college game I'm looking up game notes on it and I'll look at a
a coach or an assistant and I'll look at their resume and the number of different places and the the it may be ten jobs in twelve years I'm I don't know how you I don't know how you do it I don't forget about life's having a family and kids I just I mean the constant jumping and moving and finding a place to live and the uncertainty of if you're gonna have if you're gonna be sticking around after this agent I don't know and you got to do it because you know at some point you got to hit your wagon to the the next young up and coming coach you know like like like we'll sign right at can you know you know those coaches long way you go you know what if that guy gets a job I'm gonna I gotta go because he's got it right versus you know you know you make you got to make sure you follow the right you the right guy and you make the right decision because you follow the wrong guy then you get kind of stuck but yeah it's so much of what you want to do is
is the better what you is more about what you have to do if you want to make a career of it and that's what that's the sacrifice they make all right we come back let's talk about officiating what the heck is going on with all the flags in the NFL oh god no almost plus I had Peter King on last night who's gonna be in town on Saturday night and I ask him for all he's seen in 40 years of covering the NFL all he's seen evolve in the game what he's worried about in the future the game you'll hear his response to that he's Rocky I'm Lance Roundtable show where at long-next in winter presented by Cincinnati tax resolution powered by Tofe Sheldon and right here where it's newstime on 700 WLW back to school is here and you know what that means dirty rush is on as campuses come back to life and brush week kicks into high gear we're taking you inside the mysterious journey of a sorority girl from pledging to initiation and just about everything in between joining me Gia Judeis Daisy Ken and Jen Bessler we're letting you in on the secret hand shakes passwords traditions and rituals we'll reveal what really goes on behind closed doors from the

that coming up next week we did our review and breakdown of the Miami dolphins will make that our game day preview brought you by game day men's health reclaim your game today he's rocky I'm Lance all right we have we have two topics to get to I'll make it dealers choice for you which would you like to do first we can do NFL officiating or we can do Peter King's concerns for the NFL going forward we'll do both which one would you like to do first officiating first all right let's do officiating first week four or through the first four weeks of the season rock according to ESPN there have been nine hundred and sixty three penalties accepted that is the most the NFL has seen in the first four weeks of the season since 1978 Sunday there was an average of seventeen penalties per game the most in any NFL week since 2015 there have been this season
seventeen touchdowns nullified by penalties now let me give you a little context you're thinking seventeen that sounds like a lot what to give me a comparison here last year through the first four weeks there were four touchdowns called back the year before five touchdowns called back seventeen this year I said it Monday night watching the Bengals on Sunday was difficult to do because it was flag after flag after I think there were twenty four total for two hundred and thirty five yards off it it drives you crazy what is going on well first of all people only really hate flags when it goes against their team they they like when they help their team um but with that said as someone who works in TV and does games every week it's a killer you you get the sense because you know when me my broadcast partner Clay Mathick we always talk about it too it's just like yeah disrupts the flow of the game and today so many there's so many options people's attention spans are so small
they've never been shorter okay so you get all these stoppages you know people can go to the next game or go or go open their phones yes yes open their Netflix and go watch a movie and it's just like I feel that that conversations should be had to the referees like look guys we want to call a tight game we don't want to let things go but we we live in a world where where people will tune out very very quickly and we cannot we got to have a constant flow of the game I mean I think soccer is boring as hell but they're usually I mean there's like a flow more of a flow and less stoppages of it which I which I find good if it's more of you know to today's model of a mindset of an average viewer yeah I think everybody who watches once the obvious and egregious call like everybody points or gets up out of there's anything like but I think there's so many things that in the old adages what you could call a hold a hold on on every play of the game I just to me I want it to be
obvious egregious and I want some consistency because the my the complaint on Sunday was they had called the game one way close through three quarters into the fourth quarter it was like do we do whatever you guys want and I think everybody then throws up their hands like well what do we do it here yeah well and then I feel like there's a flag called that's kind of minor and then I believe that yeah then they go with the makeup call like okay well I kind of called that one kind of tight well I better call another one tight it's human nature but yeah you got to realize that you know we want a flow of the game going on right now these are game on on Tuesday it's a three hours and 45 minutes a long long game yeah and it was doing pretty good and then the fourth quarter it was just flying penalty and penalty and penalty now think about that what what you just said and obviously the complaint for years and baseball was the games were too long and they've added a pitch clock the average length of a game this year and major league baseball was two hours and 42 minutes you
did a football game there was an hour and three minutes longer the average baseball game yeah holy cow long time also in this in this note from this was from Warren Sharp sharp football analysis holding calls are it being called at the highest rate since 2019 now people would point to that and say well it's because offensive lineman aren't developed as well they're not as technical now and they're sloppier than they used to be yep so that's that's you know most penalties on third and fourth down in the second half since 20 since 2000 so the most in 26 years being called on third or fourth down in the second half of games for for whatever reason red zone penalties are up 30% costing a what is a record pace right now of about five yards per team per game I mean red zone opportunities and then you're you're looking at scoring red zone holding up 38% 17 touchdowns I mean
you talk about dragging down what people see people want to want to see points scored so you you tag team them with flag after flag after flag and fewer points being scored that doesn't sound like a race of a success for the NFL not only I just felt yeah it's got to be changed they got you know not say drastically do it but guys look if if grandma you know can't see it from the the first row here yes let's not call and you know and I think it would be fair and this has been common over the years there's a lot of times you know and I think you've talked about this the point of emphasis every year begins it seems with a point of emphasis and everybody will be but players and coaches will be right we're going to more closely what and we're going to enforce these and the idea being you're going to get a lot of these early you got to adjust to it but even taking into account we're four weeks in even four weeks in these are record number rate so we're past that breaking in period of maybe a point of emphasis being whatever area the game and
you guys have to adjust well four weeks in we're still under record setting pace for the number of penalties it's just that's a bad trend yeah man all right Peter King joined me last night on sports talk long time NFL writer for decades the Monday morning quarterback a staple of reading for decades and sports illustrated and he is in town on Saturday night at Joseph Beth his new book is the game his tails of 40 years of covering the NFL he'll sign his book he's there with Paul Dockert he dock is going to be there on a Saturday night Joseph Beth Brandon is lovely wife Phil is going to be on hand to get that book it's a tremendous read among the many things we discussed last night sports talk I ask him having seen what you've seen and he talked about how you know in the eighties the NFL was there was one event for the NFL offseason that was that was like the two it was really two it was the draft in the combine and now it's 365 obviously it's
NFL NFL every day there's something going on in the cycle but I ask him based on what how you've seen the game evolve if you look into the future what worries you about the NFL going forward listen to what he said this insatiable desire to play more games the NFL should not be playing anymore it shouldn't have gone to 17 games per team it's 16 was a neck number wonderful they should have kept it just like that but they went to 17 and now they want to go to 18 every time they increased schedule you lead by one game per team per year you add for the starting players in the 62 65 extra plays per game that 62 65 potential collisions and head hits and it just adds to the head trauma of these guys who are already getting enough head trauma and so that I am dead set against adding more games to the schedule in fact I think they should subtract one and play
16 now there's not much chance of that happening let's just say he talked about the insatiable appetite for more football I think the the the counter to that is the NFL is special if you keep giving it to people multiple nights a week it decreases it all kind of runs together and it's not a specialty boy right I mean you could sit look at now there's what three college games on an NFL game and so it's kind of goes against you know the mindset of okay I want this right I want but if you know if you get ice cream every night for dinner at some point or like it's not as treat that I get ice cream when it was like Monday oh my god there's one game on one day night yes I got to write another six days yes to see an NFL games you know see sometimes giving us what we want isn't necessarily good for yes and you know is he right to about the injuries but it does the players yes you know the one side of the mouth the the NFL talks about
injuries and head trauma and how concerned they are but then we're going to add another game a 17th game and then possibly an 18th game and we're going to have you know teams every week getting on planes and flying however many miles and time zones over to other countries it doesn't it doesn't make sense it I mean we talk about baseball needing to decrease the amount of games and now we're talking the NFL wants to increase no there's you want the games they have meaning and again I I felt the same way 16 was like that's a lot of games a lot of games but enough to where each one matters I really really matters both from a team standpoint and your record and all that but also from a viewer standpoint of okay I'm I can't wait for that game this week after 18 games it's like well I miss this one I'll catch the next one and you know you know 18s coming and when 18 gets here it'll be at the expense of in all likelihood a preseason game so you're down to two preseason games and we've talked about how you don't really because of that you're not really prepared to start
the season which means the level of play isn't already and more penalties yeah more penalties than ever we're talking about yeah I mean well again what when I played starters played in the previous season and that way well come week one you were ready to go you were ready to go and I felt the product was pretty clean it's sloppy as hell now from a gameplay standpoint execution penalties all of that get added into it by the way one quick Peter King story just because I love the story and it's how times have changed in so many different ways when he he came to Cincinnati in 1980 it was working for the acquired 1980 to 85 he's 23 years old and he's covering the Bengals and and Sam Waiish and when the Bengals drafted Boomer in 1984 they also drafted Pete Koch in the same draft and Peter King 23 24 years old tells to the Bengals he says to the Bengals officials hey when is their flight coming in because they've been drafted they were coming into town to meet with the Bengals and he said what is the flight coming in and the Bengals told him and Peter King
goes to the airport on his own and in those days you could go to the gates and he basically more less holds up a sign and he tells Peter Pete Koch and Boomeray Sison that he's there to pick him up and he's not representing the Bengals obviously he's working for the inquire but he picked him up the airport put him in his car and he got an interview out of it but he's driving them back and Boomer's reaction was they're sending media guys to pick us up in the airport and it's just like a great story yeah like how creative he was so I'm going to talk with the two of the Bengals draft picks because I'm going to pick him up in the airport and it's just like I don't know you've got to find any little way and you've been in the in you have yeah exactly all right well head down the stretch put the wraps on it we'll travel Rockies Road as we close it out on the round table show presented by Cincinnati Tax Resolution powered by Tope Sheldon from Long Nexon Wilder on 700 W. spread that joy and it's called three-putt bogey it's coming from the perspective of golfers who are sometimes good enough to hit two great shots in a row but almost never good enough to hit three and a three-putt bogey is kind of the purest expression of that every golfer knows what that's like obviously we're gonna talk a lot about the game of golf how absurd it is and how fun it is and how vexing and frustrating but more than anything just how much we love the greatest game in the world we love it anyway we're putting these out every Friday morning for your weekend golf routine this is the show about sharing our experiences on the golf course and how absurd and funny they can be and that's what three-putt bogey is it's three-putt bogey everybody out every Friday you can listen to it now on the iHeart Radio app Apple Podcast or wherever you get your podcast well w in the books tonight from long necks in uh wilder the round table show presented by Cincinnati tax resolution powered by tof sheltered it's brought to you in part by ortho heel the cast it keeps kids moving visit ortho heel waterproof cast dot com and mills auto glass a clear
choice for windshield repair and replacement dan carol minutes away news in seven minutes dan carol after that let's travel rockies road and uh you've had a you've had an opportunity to do some scouting because we have two two of the games on involve the two that are going head to head for you on Tuesday night is there once tonight yeah one's not a have um western Kentucky at sam usein um when's the night yes pn two and these these midway games are are unique and i love it because you know look there this is an Alabama Georgia right but you're getting like stand alone games you know like a month or on Tuesday we were the only game that was on um if they think did like a million in terms of viewership so that that's always always cool when you can kind of get a marquee game a lot of people watch yeah we were uh we were talking about this earlier and I don't have I don't think we have time to do a full segment on it but I wanted to mention maybe some more next week I ask you if you had seen the new northwestern football stadium Ryan field
they unveiled it played their first game last uh Friday night against Penn State $875 million stadium it's spectacular it's NFL like it's like a mini version of like Jerry world the Dallas Cowboys stadium the locker rooms in the indoor are just absolutely mind boggling there's 35,000 seats perfect and we both said I think the initial reaction by everybody was while you spent $875 million on a new football stadium for northwestern why did you only make it 35,000 that's the the trend more teams are going that way and you understand why yeah because you know the most people are watching these games on television and when you tune into a tv broadcast and you know the director of the producer does a a span shot of the crowd and it's packed you're like man this is cool like this this is this must be something I have to see and want to dead empty or like it doesn't seem like a very big deal but yeah one of the places packed you couldn't even know anything
about the teams but you're like I'm gonna I'm gonna tune in and watch that thing and so yeah if I were these schools I would I would shrink the size of the state look unless you're Texas and Michigan and Ohio State and in some of these schools you don't need 80-100,000 seats because most of the time you know with especially how good TV is now and how clear the picture is people are going to stay home and watch these games because they have the option to so yeah smaller better create a must-see television experience 875 million dollars funded by the the the Ryan family Ryan field the family and other boosters and benefactors privately funded and it is I hope I hope if you get a chance to see let's talk about it next week because it is uh it's amazing too in the world of NIL because schools are less and less or more I should say more reluctant to spend on facilities and things which used to be the big draw but now okay that's a bunch of millions
you're putting into a stadium that some coach would say can you leave a few million to so we can buy some good players that's what it's funny because that's been said of of UC and their practice facilities incredible and yet the whole conversation up when you're recruiting the kid is he saying what's your weight room and everything goes look like or is he saying what's what's the check gonna how many how many dollars it used to be like you know eight yes plus years ago it was what do the facilities look like you know then Clemson was building the the fields with the you know the yep you know the barbecue pits and the in the Wiffable fields and all that's honestly because that was the good thing now the kids I always say the transition from when I played to now when I played it was you know a school pump through tradition right and you know I fell for new rock knee in the forehorsesman and all that sort of stuff and then transitioned into okay what the facilities look like now it is how much money you're gonna pay me yeah I don't care about it okay good you tell me great you got a new weight room cool how much money you're gonna pay me
yep which for the the assistant who was like you're recruiting guy the guy who had the ends in cities in the high school coaches and everything that rolls kind of like it's it's not what it once was the value that that assistant might bring to your team a decade ago isn't nearly what it is because it's a transactional thing but well I think that cherry comes that guy walks in your house man you're going to that school but when you know back in the days when it was like tricking you know the the program and being all in for this school and this is why you need to come here and now that again they're like great but what's the number show me the most uh in his frustrated good I have talked to coaches about it because they're like recruiting is already a grind it's not the funnest thing in the world but we can go into a house and say man look what we're doing look we've upgraded this and upgraded that and and that sort of thing and now they don't get that even enjoy that little sliver of it we are done you know what I'm doing tomorrow
I'm going to the zoo the Cincinnati Zoo not been to the zoo for a while I'm off tomorrow and Kelly and I are going to the zoo I haven't been to the zoo in ages and I don't know why but I said I want to go to the zoo and it's going to be a gorgeous day so I'm going to the zoo I don't think I've ever been to the zoo when it wasn't like 175 degrees so good for you to pick in the right time of year in my opinion to go to the zoo but what what what animal do you want to are you really looking to get a gander um snakes really reptile yeah okay I'm gonna next week I'm going to do the show with a big like boy constrictor you'll be doing the show solo because I don't do that okay I don't care about a crappy environment but I'm not doing a nice little snake thanks to Russ Jackson for producing tonight thanks to Mike Mills for engineering tonight have a great weekend everybody stick around the news and then Dan Carroll and stick around in the house because we've got a drawing to get to next this has been the roundtable show presented by Cincinnati
