This is the Big Breakdown. Along look back at some of the biggest stories we're covering for you at the Hidden Kiln Podcast and True Crime today. This is Hidden Killers with Tilly Brusky. After Mike Miller died, her family went through her journals and diaries piecing together and diaries piecing together everything that she had written. What they uncovered was a heroine catalog of allegations against her husband, pastor, John Paul Miller.

3:02I should say the front. The KP has denied any involvement in anything, basically from the federal charges to the death of Mike Miller. He maintains his innocence. He's never been charged in connection with her murder, but he is facing those federal charges that connect to the stalking and all of the events leading up to the unaliving of Mike Miller. So what can we glean from all of that? What exactly did he do? That literally has led to what is the accused of doing that has literally led to proposed legislation so other women never have to fall victim and experience. The cruelty, the alleged cruelty, the alleged degration, I don't even know what to words.

4:09It's so disturbing what JP Miller is alleged to have done to Mike Miller while she was alive. There's really not words for it. There's a consequence for it and it involves dismembering John Paul Miller and sprinkling his parts across a railroad track only to have them eaten by wild animals and have locomotives potentially run over those parts repeatedly for weeks on end while forest fires eventually devastate the region, destroying his remains and taking them to ash, only for Satan to pull them into the depths of hell to say this guy is too dark for us. That's the consequence. Is that too much? I don't know. I was just kind of like, where do we go with this? What would be, what would be the, I mean, because was something that gross and that disgusting if the allegations are true against John Paul Miller, you know, if they're that dark,

5:17there's just, it's like you don't even want to bury somebody like that after they're removed from the plants. Like the earth doesn't, like you might contaminate the soil. You're that gross, you're that disgusting. Even the earthworms don't want to, don't want to eat your body. It's just like, oh, pass. I'll go over here and die in a puddle. That touching that shit, that's what the earthworms say to your body, John Paul, as it wrots underneath the ground. He allegedly declared Micah bipolar held on to a lithium prescription and forced her to take it. The lithium prescription was allegedly his. By the way, that's, there's laws about that too, you know, giving people your prescriptions.

6:18That's the allegation. He allegedly forced testosterone injections into her arms and thighs and whenever she tried to sleep, he'd allegedly pull the covers off her body over and over until she gave up and slept in the car, turned the light sun and off at night. You know, nice loving things that you do to your wife or as John Paul Miller says, his mentally ill wife. That's what makes it even scarier and worse is JP, if she was, in fact, mentally ill, which she might have been. Well, there's not really a lot of proof, even according to her own divorce attorney, that she had these diagnoses that you claim that she had. Let's just for a moment of argument, say, she was, why the fuck are you doing things like that to a mentally ill person? Is that part of the train of helping them? Is that, I mean, that just seems ridiculous, cruel inhumane, insane, evil one might say.

7:30If those allegations are true. On April 27th, 2024, 30-year-old Mike Miller was found dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina just two days earlier. She had served JP Miller with divorce papers. In North Carolina medical examiner eventually ruled her death and asked by self-infliction of a gunshot wound, JP Miller was already telling the church that before any sort of ruling had ever come out, getting ahead of the narrative, like a good narcissist does to his flying monkeys. JP Miller hasn't been charged in connection with her death, though he has pled not guilty to separate federal charges. We can't diagnose JP as a narcissist. We can just take a look at his behavior and go, these seem to fit these sort of strands, these sort of prerequisites. Your behavior is reminiscent of it. Then in August 26th, Netflix dropped the three-part documentary called Death of a Pastors

8:33Wife and suddenly, Mike is own voice. Her words, her personal footage, her frantic calls to 911 was placed in front of 200 million subscribers. The biggest, brightest light that JP Miller had dreaded ever following him as much as he loves the spotlight. This is a light. He can't escape. And all of his flying monkeys have scattered. Another light's just on you, JP. And the world's out for your head and rightfully so. By the following Sunday, 50 protestors stood outside Mercy Church and Myrtle Beach where JP preaches to a tiny congregation of about 15 or 20 crazy fuckers. I don't know any other word to say. Anybody who's going to pastor JP Miller's church anymore, you're not part of a congregation. You're not part of a flock.

9:34You're part of a cult. And you're complicit very likely in some sort of a criminal entity in many people's opinions, just so you're aware. But I know you see the truth in the light and you're being persecuted. And ain't JP just the man you want to be persecuted next to as the world ends, which I'm sure he's telling you was going to happen. The only problem is his world's going to end when he ends up in prison and yours is still going to be there just as pathetic as ever. And you're not going to find the solution to your problems through the storage container that JP is currently calling a church. The public anger has found its focal point yet the state of South Carolina still has no law covering this kind of abuse that was described in the journals of Micah Miller. That's her Micah's law is being proposed to come in. But we'll see if it gets there.

10:35Whether JP Miller is guilty of the federal charges against him will be decided in his trial in October, if it happens then, but regardless of that verdict, it doesn't alter what Micah wrote in her diaries. What is it change the reality that none of what she experienced was considered a crime where she lived? Micah didn't just leave those words in a diary, she walked them right into police stations. In the months leading up to her death, she filed multiple reports, both the Mertle Beach Police Department and the Horey County Police Department. She warned officers that someone was following her. She told them tracking devices had been placed on her car and that razor blades were slashing her tires. She made it explicitly clear she was terrified for her life. The officers took her reports down, but what else could they really do? The federal indictment brought a year and a half later would allege that JP contacted Micah over 50 times in a single day.

11:37Its detailed how he allegedly posted a private photograph of her online without consent or feared with her finances and tractor vehicle. Those were the actions federal prosecutors eventually charged, but back when local police took their calls in real time, they had no state law to enforce. Attorney Regina Ward, who did a great interview on the podcast, criminally obsessed this last week. I do hardly suggest checking it out, who handled Micah's legal separation and now represents her family, put it plainly. Law enforcement simply had no legal backing. And look, I mean, from a human standpoint, if you're like, what do you do? I would do this. I would do that. Well, that's great. But if you're a cop and there's laws in place and you are only allowed to do so much, you can't go beyond that. South Carolina's domestic violence statute strictly recognize physical harm. Attracting the financial isolation, the forced medication, the relentless sleep deprivation,

12:41none of it fits the legal definition. What Micah described was a systematic pattern of coercive control. But state law didn't even have a name for it. And that's why these fuckers use this sort of control because they know they can get away with it. Police can write it down, but they couldn't make an arrest. Micah's family eventually launched a civil suit against JP, which was settled in 2024. They stated publicly that they pursued civil court primarily to gather evidence of psychological abuse because the criminal justice system lacked the tools to address it. And consider the first institution Micah turned to long before police courts or lawmakers, her church. Micah was the primary worship leader at Selad Rock Church at Market Common in Murdle Beach. She led the music. She poured her heart and money into the ministry. At Hory County property record, show solid rock ministries controlled four real estate properties, badly that 5.59 million JP Miller did an own a single property under his own name

13:42in the county. Everything was funneled through non-profit paper with JP serving his pastor, registered agent and soul authority. The church wasn't a sanctuary for Micah. It was her husband's power base. The very people she might have turned to for help were the congregation listening to JP sermons every Sunday morning, being brainwashed by his bullshit. According to the Netflix documentary, loved ones alleged Micah opened up to or opened up about the abuse to people inside the church. It in spark a single intervention, the sanctuary that should have protected her was entirely under her husband's control. When that organization fractured following Micah's death, the mid-protest, FBI searches, and a disappearing congregation, the money revealed what was really going on. The market common property was sold to a developer in February 25 for 2.15 million. However, back in December 24, before that deal went through, JP had already transferred

14:43separate 15-acre highway 17 parcel from solid rock to a brand new corporate activity, living water church at market common. A reported transfer fee, $5. The primary records assessed that land at 1.7 JP is registered as living water's agent under its structure. If living water ever dissolves, its assets don't return to churchgoers. They route directly to St. Delight Pentecostal Church, a small congregation little river headed by JP spiritual advisor, allegedly Charles Randall, another fine individual. The institution didn't resolve. It simply rebranded on new paperwork while the same signature controlled every filing. The authority never broke. It just shifted locations. That brings us to Senate Bill 702 known as Micah's Law. This proposed legislation would make coercive control of felony in South Carolina, carrying penalties of up to 10 years in prison.

15:44It's something. It's a speed bump. Is it perfect? No, but it's something. It would explicitly expand domestic violence definitions to include psychological, emotional and financial abuse crucially. It would mandate law enforcement training to recognize the exact abuse patterns micodocumented in their journal entries and police reports. People know what they're looking at when they see it. Remarkably, SB 702 represents the fourth attempt to criminalize coercive control in South Carolina since 2020 four bills across six years. The persistent hurdle, crafting a legal definition narrow enough for prosecutors to enforce without pushback. We can do it. I believe, I believe in you. You can do it. Other states have done it. South Carolina, you can handle it too. This year legislative delays in redistricting debates to all progress further, you know, important things.

16:45The bill made it to the Senate. In fact, to the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee hearing in April of 26, two full years after Mike had passed away, but never advanced to a full committee vote. When the regular session closed on May 14th, co-sponsored Senators Stephen Goldfinch acknowledged the bill never fully formed. You know, we're not really doing our job. We just kind of keep voting for us. After losing his primary campaign for Attorney General Goldfinch, returned to his presidency, promising to reintroduce the measure in January 27th. Oh, that's great. It's nice to see you're going to go back and do your fucking job. How considerate of you. According to the violence policy center, South Carolina consistently ranks among the most dangerous states in the nation for women murdered by men, holding the tragic number one ranking for separate times. Every action Mike had documented that withheld medication, forced injection, sleep deprivation,

17:48financial control, tracking and forced isolation was not considered a crime under South Carolina law while it was happening to her. It remains unpunishable today for legislative attempts in six years and for failures. Here should federal authorities were ultimately able to pursue. In December of 2025, 18 months after Mike's death in indictment came down, one count of cyber stocking and one count of making false statements to federal agents. JP pled not guilty at his January 26th Arrayment in Florence. A judge ordered him to wear an ankle monitor surrender his passport and post $100,000 bond. During that hearing, prosecutors revealed that FBI agents found cash, silver and valuable collectible cards inside his safe at JP's residence, highlighting his access to private aircraft as evidence of a flight risk. The indictment details reveal how limited legal remedies were. Prosecutors alleged JP claimed he hired a private investigator to prevent Mike from buying

18:51firearms. When a reality, he hired an investigator to track her for alleged infidelity, even though he was actively being unfaithful. If other alleged JP denied damaging Mike as tires, despite evidence showing he ordered a tire deflation device online and message others about her vehicle, that's what the full force of federal law produced, a case built on text messages tracking software and a tire deflation tool if convicted in all charges a maximum statutory penalty is seven years. Federal investigators stepped in with cyber stocking charges only because state statutes offered no path forward. These charges represent legal remedies of last resort, imperfect tools applied when foundational protections don't exist. Following six continuances, the trial is scheduled for October 26th. We'll see. As Defense Council continues reviewing discovery materials, meanwhile, JP still preaches on

19:53Sundays in case you want to go join him. Let's run through my mind. A mercy church in Myrtle Beach to a handful of knitwits following his court ordered ankle monitor while his wife Susie Skinner leads services behind him. The sweet sounds of Susie come see her this weekend. Isn't she great? The situation has grown so intense that an unrelated local church, mercy Baptist in Conway had to issue a public statement clarifying they have zero connection to JP Miller after being flooded with angry calls and messages following the Netflix release of people thinking they were them. Yet even in a full, even a full conviction on every federal count, this fall won't address the core horror documented in Micah's journals. They remain to no criminal charge with holding medication or systematically depriving

20:56a spouse of sleep. South Carolina law still lacks the words to call it what it is. And unless more people start coming forward and sharing their stories of their experiences with JP, he's going to be out. He's going to keep doing his shit. If you have the words and the experiences, I'm sorry. I am sorry that you had to go through that. Now it's your turn to find the strength. Speak up and speak truth to power and expose the evil and the darkness. That is JP Miller. More voices is more power. And only you can prevent a forest fire.

And as he does his work, it's really I like this because he said it was fucking mind. But behind the scenes, records and family members describe affairs, betrayal and revenge porn. And the kicker, barely a year after a Micah's tragic death, there he is, on a beach, marrying a woman named Susie Skinner, who's husband was a paraplegic who somehow ended up at the bottom of a swimming pool at Market Thomas. It's horrible. Same sort of area in place where John Paul's church happens to be. That's nothing to see here. He's not in charge with any crimes and related to any of these things, by the way. Hey, local police department, do your fucking job. I wonder if you like insurance policy. No, she's right beside him. She's leading worship at his pop up church services. Well, he waits for a federal cyber stocking trial.

23:59You're sitting there watching this and you're thinking, okay, how, how are you there? Why are you there? Today, Shaman Scott psychotherapist is with us to break down the gut-wrenching hypocrisy of the narcissist and the sheer mental gymnastics it takes for a woman to become the new supply, which is literally what she is. And if you know about narcissists and narcissism and borderlines and all that sort of shit, you understand the supply. He exchanged Micah for her. JP claimed he was desperately fighting to get his wife back. He was already allegedly cheating on her and posting her private, humiliating photos online for the world to see. In a mind like this, Shaman, in the clinical mind of a monster like this, what does love actually mean? Is there love for someone like this or is it just all pure ownership and control? And I got you underneath my claws. I think you nailed it.

25:00And love is always a difficult word for me because it means simple word for letters and it means so many different things to everybody. And it's vague and we all do it differently. Attachment, I like the word attachment. We all attach to people. We attach to our animals and we can have healthy attachments and really sick and twisted attachments. And I think this guy does sick and twisted attachments and calls it love. But a wife to him is a possession and you're right, the wife meets his ego needs and he wants an attractive, beautiful woman that stands up there, you know, leading worship, right? There's a pattern and the music and this all feeds his ego and it makes him feel powerful and he picks women who at least go along with the idea initially that they're to submit to him. And he calls this kind of attachment love and it's not in any way, I think what we would

26:04say is a healthy thing. Micah died in April of 24 and then by June of 25, he's already locked down a new wife. And the allegations as we saw in the doc and as we've seen from a lot of reporting and investigating of this, it looks like the affair was going on while Micah was still alive. While he by the way is telling everyone, she's really sick. I'm doing everything I can. If she gets her medicine, she's going to be okay, but I can't get it to her. If you're there and you're loving your wife and you're trying to get her better and she's getting out of your grips and she's falling to places where it's just, it's not going to be good for her and you really care about her more than anything in the world and you just want her to be well. And why are you cheating with the paraplegic congregants wife in your church while doing that simultaneously? I mean, why the guys like this, why are they pathologically incapable of sitting alone

27:07with their own thoughts? Why the aggressive rush to find the new mirror for his ego? I think he definitely fits in the category and people will debate if addiction is the right word or if compulsion is a better word. But last year she has acidiction for this guy and he, somebody commented they'd love to see his digital footprint. So would I? I think it would be really enlightening about how he operates internally and this is a person that's, you know, we talk about is there hope for change? I like to hold hope for people. I really like to, but I'd say prognosis poor in this case. It doesn't look real good that this kind of behavior is ever going to stop for him because clearly he's not motivated to do anything different. He keeps repeating patterns from what we see. 28:09Great movie. That's exactly what I thought of too. Michael Scott and then Agent Skarn. I did look up since we were talking about it. There's been no report of life insurance policy on Suzy's former husband that drowned in the pool in his wheelchair. They just showed some probate stuff but no mention of life insurance. Doesn't mean he didn't have one, but it was not part of any public. I don't think, I mean, this is an interesting case where it doesn't feel necessarily like insurance is the motivator here. It's control. In so much of this and the sheer the ability, the leverage that he knows to pull of how to try and get there. Let's talk about Suzy Skinner a little bit. Obviously she's not in a charged with anything. I'm not accusing her of anything. I'm just observing that you're currently the partner of Jake Emiller. She went through her own profound tragedy. Your previous husband drowned under rather mysterious circumstances.

29:11Now, let's just say that it was completely what the authorities have looked at it is and called it in that it was an accident or an ass sweet we don't know. Say next little drowning. Whatever. Let's assume it's in that lane and there wasn't somebody off the camera that said, whoop, ended up in a pool. Do these predators intentionally hunt for women who've already been softened by grief knowing their boundaries might be vulnerable? It also makes me wonder a little bit where it's like, God, I mean, I'm not trying to make a screwed up pun here, but it's like, did something need to be pushed over the edge a little bit to make her want to be with JP Moore? And that was literally what happened. I don't know the answer. I'm not accusing anybody, but it certainly she is someone who was dealing with with tragedy in her life and trauma and there's JP to swoop in. Is that just a coincidence?

30:12No, I think people who are predatory and you can definitely look at the pattern of behavior with him and see the predatory nature. Micah was an incredibly vulnerable teenager and he went for her. I think, yes, for a recent widow who had been through a lot, obviously her caregiving for her husband was emotionally draining. She went into that knowing what she was getting into, but she was a vulnerable person. And grieving and stressed and probably very confused again about her face and what does it mean to serve God when these things keep happening? And do they swoop in? Yes, they definitely do. Because a woman who's got a stronger sense of self, a stronger ego, they would see this coming. They would see this coming. And so you can be a very intelligent person, but because of your emotional vulnerability

31:15gets sucked in by a predator. 100% using his position as a position of authority and access. I mean, that's what he gave him a reason to have access to prey on that vulnerability. And that's what pure predators do. Exactly. I mean, everyone is looking at Susie and screaming run. I mean, she sees the dead wife, the federal indictments, the documentaries, what psychological defense mechanism makes a woman look at the billboard size red flags and convince herself, his accent was just crazy. He'd never do that to me. People reasoning, right? People go for something that meets their emotional needs. And then they have the cognitive ability to twist it all around. And it almost is the same with the women, the hybristophilia, the women who are very intelligent people, but they fall for the murders incarcerated in prison because he sends her these letters and he makes her feel so good and she's so special and so important and that hits her

32:19vulnerability. And they can completely twist the story about he's innocent, he never did this and despite all the evidence. And you see that over and over and people always think, well, these are dumb women, they're not. They're not. It's emotional reasoning, they're needy. She's a couple more strong loving critics in her life. It's amazing how influencible we all are as people if the right levers are pulled. Very cruel. Very cruel. That's one more question because I mean, it feels like characters like JP have all gone to the same convention at time or two and they pull out the same bullshit, you know, tricks on everybody. And they think they're all just, whoa, aren't I innovative? Where, what do you see as his next move before prison if he's convicted? I mean, he's not one to shy away from himself deprecating himself on on stage at his church. He's admitted affairs on stage.

33:21He's admitted shortcomings. He's admitted all sorts of shit of, I've been a sinner. I'm horrible. And then the congregation's like, oh my gosh, look how open and honest he is. Oh, how can we do anything but forgive him? Is that going to be the same, is it going to be the same rerun of, oh, I've screwed up. Please forgive me, card to the 15 people in the shipping container that's now called the church. Or what, what lever do you think he pulls this time? Now that the spotlight is, whoa, it's, he's, the bumpers right here and he's right here and it's a cold winter night in Wisconsin. Yeah, yeah, I think that's a good guess. If he's ever caught red handed, it's the, oh, you know, look what I did. I screwed up. He'll so bad about it here are the tears. And yet this is the hook for this theology. You have to forgive people, right? God forgives us all. That's the message of the cross. And therefore everybody is kind of bamboozled into, well, this is what God, you know, again,

34:24it's coming out of his mouth. God wants you to forgive. And as long as you confess your sins, you're forgiven for your sins and everybody goes, oh, okay. So I've been looking at, there was a pattern of a character flaw here and maybe we need to question the whole thing. Maybe one or two people out of the 15 will say enough already. We hope so. Maybe for going to church and a shipping container. Life isn't going so well for you. Exactly. So I have my, I have my theory. So I think he might have come to his end. I'm playing that of the Ligiosity card and it's mortal sin and all that. I have fake suicide attempt for the win. That could, that could happen. Woo! That could certainly happen. Oh wow. I see that. Going for the sympathy thing, you know, LLs is failed, you know, and it would be, it would be histrionic like he's done in the past. You see him, you know, like sprawled out on the ground with a couple of big razor blade, cut suns, wrists, I've seen this in bootcats. You know, when I was a public manor down there, I would watch the most hilarious fake attempts

35:29in my life. I'm sorry, self-awafing because I know we're on YouTube. But it was, I can see him doing that because of the, the, the atrix of it. Yeah, yeah. That's a very good guess. And it moves the needle. One, one, I got one more because I, I just listened to the phone call from the attorney. It was in the doc too. And, and, and JP is on it. And I'm just curious to get your take on the aff that of JP. I do because because he, there's a, there's like a call that he had with her and she recorded it and it's played back in the doc. And then he sounds out, you know, I'm like, I took this, I make it, it's because it's all my gosh, he did this and then I get rid of the medicine. And she couldn't take the medicine and I keep talking like this for the next 30 seconds and I don't stop. I mean, I get like, if you're upset and then sometimes your voice kind of pops, it becomes like, it goes on. It goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on. Like that for a very long time. What the fuck is that? Michelle Dugger's cousin. Yeah, it's on the side. Like, JP's like, if I start song like a duck, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, Yeah, it's on my side.

36:30Like JP's like, if I start song like a duck or maybe a little listen. I mean, but what is, I mean, it sounds like it's like a child, you know? Exactly what I was going to say. It's like a reversion to what worked for him as a kid. Yeah. Oh, yeah. The question. This was childhood manipulation and you see how he got through life and when he's really trying to manipulate people, he'll flip back into that ego state of what, what has always worked for him and is that pathetic, weird voice. Is it like on the ground? You know, like, he's like ground curled up on his side like this and like, spinning around in a circle. But it's a pattern. He does it. I mean, it's like when, when all paths have been exhausted, that seems to be what he goes to is reverting to a toddler on the ground. I mean, I guess that must be how you know you got him in a corner. Would that be a tell? You have him in a corner if you start stalking like that. And apparently it works for certain people, you know?

37:32People in his circle. Oh my gosh, we're so worried about it now. It would be fun.
