About this episode

“What's better than watching college football? Watching it on your own terms with sling. Sling lets you watch your favorite college teams on ESPN your way, starting at just 499.”From the transcript

Easton Cowan is being talked about as one of the NHL’s top breakout candidates — but there’s one major thing that could stand in the way of a huge season.

Mike DiStefano and Dave Morassutti break down Cowan’s opportunity heading into his second full NHL season, including why his current matchup-line role with Nick Paul and Colton Sissons could limit his offensive production. Can Cowan force his way into the Leafs’ top six, and what would a true breakout season look like for him?

Then, the guys get into one of Toronto’s biggest questions heading into the season: who is actually the Maple Leafs’ No. 1 goaltender?

Is Sergei Bobrovsky going to take the net and run with it, or should Toronto view him and Anthony Stolarz as a tandem? With Bobrovsky coming off another 50-plus-game season but entering his age-38 season, how much should the Leafs lean on him?

Plus, the final preseason game, Morgan Rielly’s first game alongside Darren Raddysh, Matthew Knies’ breakout potential and more Leafs discussion.

Dave, what's going on today? What are we talking about on a Wednesday? We're going to continue the conversation we had yesterday about Eastern Count and why we think a big season could be in the works for him. As you said, there's maybe something that might potentially hold him back for that. We didn't get to finish our co-signose science, so you and I will continue to, we have won each left to do, so we'll break those down. It looks like expansion has been a big talking point, but maybe the NHL was a little too fancy to give it a little full steam ahead to give it the green light. Yeah, we'll always get into that a little bit more. The board of governors meeting ongoing currently in the NHL and Gary Beppin poured some cold water on the expansion talk. We can dive into it a little bit later on in the show. We'll get to these in Cowan stuff in a moment, but to big dates, it's the final pre-season

game tonight. Toronto taking on the Ottawa Senators. It's going to be a split squad game. You'll have half the team sticking around here in Toronto, the other half going up to Ottawa to play. I'd imagine Dave, this is the final pre-season game, right? There's no other games. This is going to be the full team, full squad. They're not going to send half of the group up there, half the group stay up to dinner in Montreal. I'd imagine what we see down at Scotiabanker in it tonight is what Jim Hiller believes to be his opening night lineup. What do you think? Yeah, and that's what I want to see. I'm paying to go watch that game. I want to be in the NHL. Got tickets or bought tickets, which one? No, no, bought tickets. It's a true. Family tradition to go to the last home pre-season game. Most of the time you see the top guys. I don't think we've ever been, we didn't disappoint, let's just say.

Yeah, I'd imagine tonight you'll see the full group. I think we saw basically the top six playing in Toronto against Montreal, the bottom six went to play in Montreal. I think we see it all tonight. You get your first look at what the Toronto Maple Leafs are going to look like. It's the first game for Morgan Riley. We'll get an opportunity to see what Morgan Riley looks like alongside Darren Radish and see how that pairing looks. We'll get a chance to see Easton Cowan who was not in Toronto this past weekend. He was up in Montreal with more of the bottom six guys. So hopefully I'm assuming again, this is all assumptions. We don't know exactly what's going to happen, but Mike get to see Easton Cowan on the ice tonight. We spoke about him yesterday and how he has an opportunity to possibly work his way up the lineup for the Toronto Maple Leafs. I saw there was an article in the score that named him specifically as one of the five

top breakout candidates in the NHL. I don't think that comes as a major shock. He's obviously plays in a major market. It's a team that has a lot of offense. There's a path for him to get up on to that top line with Matthews or possibly play with Neil Anderson. There's a path for him to go up into a top six and play a real offensive role. I would say there's one thing holding him back from that, however. And I'm not saying that it's going to completely kill him, but his usage and lack of opportunity in the top six on the first power play unit to start off. If your work is way into that role, at least the top six, maybe not PP one, that's one thing that might hold him back. And it may be harder for him to put up those big numbers in the role that he's currently set up for as we begin the season because currently he's slated. He's getting on a line with Nick Paul and Colton Sissons.

That's a match up line. That's a line that's going to get a lot of D zone starts and a line that's going to be playing against other opposition's top players in their own end. Probably more often than not, right? It's not going to be a country club for Eastern County. He's going to have to work hard. He's going to have to do a lot of the heavy lifting on the defensive side of things and maybe won't get as much opportunity as he would have wished he would have if he were to be in the top six to get those points to consider him like a true breakout star. So we think breakout Dave, I think you know, offense, right? You want a guy who offensively goes from being a 30 point guy to being a 50 to 60 point guy. And that's me would be considered a break up. Breast and Cal. And if he gets 50 to 60 points a year, I would consider that a breakout for a 20 year old player. But you know, like I said, the one thing maybe holding him back is going to be the usage and things can change. Of course, his role can change. He can move up the lineup.

And as we sit here on the, the morning of the final preseason game or about a week away from the actual star of the season, slated to be in a more of a match up role, defensive role, it's going to be a little bit tougher than maybe the outside perspective is on Eastern County to become that breakout star that maybe others believe he can be just based on where he's slotted right now. The May believes. Well, that's it. I think that for him, the potentials there, we've seen what he can do in an elevated role is just he's got to put himself in a position to overcome those that are kind of, you know, whole blocking him from achieving that, right? I think like, look, I was listening to what Nick Paul had to say about Eastern County and he's like, I'm just telling the guy, you got the puck. Shoot. He mad as long as you hit the net. Just don't miss, but shoot it.

And we saw young guys tend to overthink things. I think having a guy like Nick Paul, no cold and scissors, those guys are going to keep him level headed. I think that's going to be important for him. And maybe they feel like that's a good start for him to get that, you know, get that familiarity, get that leadership, get a bit of that mentorship. And then as the season goes along, you're probably going to see him get more of an elevated role. Uh, yeah. I mean, I, I think it's very possible, although I will say, I shouldn't say that. I think it's, it is possible for Cal and I guess to make it so difficult on Jim Huller that he's got to give him more ice time and put him on a little bit. Definitely is possible. But there's also the other side of the coin where if things are going well, you know, with Jack Rossivic and Austin Matthews and things are going well with McKenna with Neal and D'Avaris, you know, he may not be able to work his way up into into the top six for

quite some time and maybe spends a majority of the season in a bottom six role, right? Kind of getting those those those dirty minutes, playing a matchup role in the third line. It's definitely possible that that's how it could turn out. Um, but on the other side of the coin, there's, there's going to be opportunity if an injury occurs in the top six or a guy like Jack Rossivic just isn't quite getting it done the way that, you know, they wanted it to work out with him and Austin Matthews. He's the first guy you're, you're setting up there and giving an opportunity to, to see if you can get something else cooking, right? So there's a path. They'll get me wrong. There's definitely a path for him to be a top breakout candidate, but I think the usage and where he's slotted currently in the lineup could hold him back from that unless things are right. I think that's, uh, so maybe just, you know, with, with there being high expectations on Eastern Cowan going into a second full season in the NHL, he's now being, you know, referred

to us a top breakout candidate. Well, let's pump the brakes. Let's, let's make sure that, uh, that he gets his job done and, uh, and stays on Jim Hiller's good side, but so far so good. And we'll see kind of where it all ends up. Um, last year, just to reiterate 66 games, he had 11 goals, 18 assists for 29 points. I think if he can go 20 plus goals, 50 to 60 points, that would be considered like a break out for me. What, what would a breakout season look like for you at the end of the year for Eastern Cowan? Yeah, I mean, I want to see him, yeah, because it's all about his ice time of what, how many of those offensive zone opportunities he's going to get. Um, yeah, he's got to be flirting with 20, 20 goals, getting into that four, you know, 40 point range. I think that, 90 more. 30 last year and only 66 games playing a bottom six.

You consider a break out like at the end of the year, you're thinking like you want him into 60 point range. Well, I think 50 to 60, like, feels like 56 points, right? Like 23 goals, you know, 23 goals and, uh, what would that be? 30 something assists, right? 33 assists. Like, yeah, I would consider that a breakout year. Yeah, well, for him, if, you know, in a, you know, lower role, I would, I would probably say it. So yeah, yeah, even in a regular role, I mean, I think six, like you, you go from 30 and you double your point total and go from 30 to 60. Let's break out at 20 years old at that. I think that's a break out by from 30 to 40 isn't a monumental lead. True. But if you can go from 30 to 50 or 30 to 55, I think that's, that's pretty sizable at that point. We'll see, you know, the, the other opportunities on the second power play unit. And I'm curious, we don't know this yet. How often we're going to see the second power play unit last year and the last few years, like it's been heavy PP one, right?

Heavy. If I'm not mistaken, last year in Ottawa, it was a little bit more even with the first and second unit power play from Danny Alfred's in when he was in, in Ottawa. So I'll be curious. I don't know. You know, that could have been because they didn't necessarily have like a dominant top unit like they have in Toronto. I will be curious to see how these power play units get deployed here in Toronto under Daniel Alfredson with him being, being a new guy in the fold, but he will get opportunities on the second power play units trying to pick up some offense in on the power play. All right. We'll take a break. Let's come back to get to co-sign. No sign. We'll do that next to the Lockdown Least podcast for the Lockdown podcast network. It's your team every day. That's the case. Alright, we will get to coast. I know sign in a second. Did you happen to see who scored a couple of goals last night for the New York calendars

where you keep the tabs on what was going on there? Mattias Machelli. Mattias Machelli. Yeah, I was going to say I'm not exactly. I got my days later. I'll mix up Monday night. I'm not exactly surfing to go and see what the Alan is cooking up. But I did have a few people talk about it. It was all over the socials. Yeah. Yeah. He scored twice on the power play. Beautiful feed from Shafer and just makes it one day. It's like, I couldn't have maybe figured something out with Mattias. Mattias Machelli. I was on the fence about that one. I'll be completely honest. That was one where I was like, it's a big number to have to sign them too. But like, Mattias Machelli, Ross the Vic. They chose Ross the Vic. We'll see how it turns out at the very end. But it did kind of make me wonder, which may believe Dave. Do you think that the team is going to miss most this season?

What leave that was with the team last year are the Maple is going to miss the most? The obvious answer to this question a year ago was Mitch Marner. Is there an obvious answer to that question this year? Is there like one Maple leave that was with the team last season? We were like, I wish that guy was still a Toronto. He'd be a perfect fit with this group. I really know one that I'm like itching to say, maybe some people would have said if Scott Lawden was more of a physically driven, you get that center ice position. It seemed like a good glue guy in the locker room. And a coach that might actually use them like a 3C? Actually, it's a lot improperly. Yeah, that's kind of where I'm at with a guy like Scott Lawden there. Like similar vein. Like Joseph Walls, probably one that could come to mind as well. But like he bring in Buprovsky, so you might not miss him that much. We'll see what they get out of the van.

He stole ours this year. But by the way, I don't know if you saw this, but Dan Vlador got hurt last night as well. So Joseph Wall might be the starter for Philly. We'll see if he's ready for game one. We've been there Philadelphia fans. We'll see what happens there. Bobby McMahon was the other name that I kind of thought of where it's like, I really fit really nicely on the third line right now. Like wouldn't he fit nicely on a third line and a guy who can just go up and down the line up, you know, a guy who can who's got that blazing speed to play in a north-south game, feels like he'd fit well in a gym, hill or system, doesn't he? I feel like Bobby McMahon might be a guy who would just be a nice luxury. He's a player to have this year if he was around still. Yeah, and I think Hillary would have found a way to make him a valuable part of the roster, right? Yeah. You know, I thought with him, you got the speed, you got the size and he was scoring,

right? That's all you need from him. Like, I know some people had higher expectations for him, but I thought he was pretty good for what he was. You got 29 goals last year. 29 goals, like in 78 games. So like that's 30 goal pace. He plays all 82. You know, well, how much more do you want from what it was, you know, undrafted college free agent? Like pretty good. Pretty good stuff from Bob McMahon. I think he started out in the ECHL, was he one of those like ECHL, then to the AHL and then to the NHL? I don't know, either way. You know, late bloomer, eventually, you know, got a shot last season, did really well at the Leafs, and I've gotten dealt to Seattle and he signed a long-term deal there with the Kraken. But yeah, I feel like he's a player that, you know, could fit nicely here. I could tell you, I'd rather McMahon over Dakota Joshua that I can assure you of.

Absolutely. Yeah, oh, yeah, not, not even close. McMahon and Nick Paul though. I kind of like the versatility of the Nick Paul provides. Yeah. Yeah, I think Nick Paul's part of the answer. Like, McMahon has more offense to him, but Paul, I think, has more versatility and, you know, I think is more of a role player than, then, then, old Bobby McMahon, Bobby McMathuse. As we were calling him at times, or the course of the last couple of years. All right, cosine no sine, Dave, all right? For those who miss yesterday, we're supposed to get to a couple of each. We only got to one, then we ran out of time, soccer. So we're going to carry it over into today's podcast. So the way it works, Dave and I will make statements to one another. If we agree with it, we cosine it. If we disagree, we give it the old no sine. Dave, why don't you go first?

What's your cosine no sine? Matthew Knies is going to flirt with a point per game season. Oh, cosine. Yeah, cosine that for sure. If he's going to be, you know, on the top line with Austin Matthews, if he's going to be on that top power play unit, which is a hammered de virus who's in that front right now. I think it was a device. It was for the first game. So that's the only. Yeah. And then I think they did kind of end up switch it up and knives at times, ended up playing on it. So we'll see. The power play might kind of change things. I know that he is currently on the second unit. Again, I don't love Rossivic being in the middle there. We'll see how that goes. But I think he, he assuming that he gets enough love on the power play, I think it's, it's certainly possible.

You can flirt with it. I mean, last year we have 66 points and it was a quote, down year for a, for, for, for a nice or at least it was a down year, but he was playing through an injury for a majority of the season. He's healthy this year, playing the top line, getting some power play minutes. Yeah, I think you definitely get up there, you know, in the 70 80 point. So I'll, I'll go sign that for sure. Yeah, again, I think he's more than capable of doing it. Just needs to stay healthy. And if you get the power play time that I think, I think he ends up there that that's part of it. Like my bird reaction is he ends up on P P one. Like I just, there's no reason to not have them there in my opinion. Like he's better than Rossivic and, and he probably will end up proving to be better than Dvarris in that net front role at this point in his career too. So eventually I think he'll end up on P P one. That's part of my projection there for your answer.

All right, cosine, no sign. Sergei Pobrovsky is going to start 50 games for the Maple Leafs this year. Yeah, I'll cosine that. I think I'm going to need him to because I don't know if I can trust Sto Wars to play a heavy workload. Like I think Sto Wars will be good for 32. Let me ask you this. Let me ask you this in a perfect world. Do you think the Maple Leafs view Bibrovsky as their number one goalie or the one a tandem goalie? I'm in the number one right now. Like there's a little lot of stories the last couple days about how he kind of commands the locker room and things. That's not a one a style goal. And I think he's more of the alpha like I'm the guy. It's right. I'm the captain now.

He walked into leaf locker room. Look that Stole in the eyes. I said, just like this was in Florida, I'm the captain now. And he's going to take the net back. That's that's how I see it in my opinion. I just think that he he's the goalie, the typical that probably wants to play a lot. Now I do know that the numbers hadn't really been fantastic for him during the regular season and we saw that in Florida times. Yeah, but he was still playing above 50 games every year because he was capable doing it. Yeah. So it was last five years he's played 50 or more games. 52 last year, 54, 58, 50 and then 54 back in 21, 22. So you know, ever since the truncated 56 game, COVID year coming out of that where we've had full 82 games, he's played at least 50 in all five of those, including again, 52

last year for the Florida Panthers. 38 years old though, it makes you wonder like it would he be better served, you know, only plan 45, 46 games as opposed to to hitting that 50 mark. It's a worthwhile question to ask. I do think it's worth a question to ask. We'll see. I don't know how the Maple Leafs view it. Like have they come and said if this is a tandem, if it's Bibrofsky's net, if they kind of just signed them and they're like, like the assumption is he'll be the guy in the playoffs, but how we get there. I don't know if we really know that answer yet. It's to me, it's just I think he has, I mean, like you give the guy $7 million, you pay him as that top guy as well. And that's part of it too. I know sometimes it's just that's what it took to get him as a free agent goal tenor so you can't just solely look at money. I just think also he's got a routine, right?

He's going to want, he's, you know, I don't think Cardo's too much of an issue. They say he's in pretty great shape. So sometimes starter goal, starting goal tenors want to feel they want to have some regularity to their starts as well. They don't want to have to be like, oh no, we're going to kind of mix in this other guy to make him feel important. Like look, you're paying Stolars more than backup money. This can also pay, pay, play a factor in that as well. I understand that part of it. But you're going to go with the guy that you believe gives you the best chance to win. I think their eyes, Tegra Baroski does not always, they wouldn't have gone out to pick him up in the off season. Yeah. All right. So there it is, our little mini cosine no sign. We'll work this back into the rotation once a week. Now that we're back into the fold, it's a fun little segment. So this will be a weekly staple here, the lock down these podcasts for the rest of the

season. Let us know if you got any cosine no signs. Maybe we can kind of bank them and get to them next week when we do the show. So let us know down below if you've got any you want us to answer yourself. All right. We'll take one more quick break. When we come back expansion, not as likely as we thought. We'll get to that next on the lock down these podcasts. Bunch of new different topics being discussed down there with the owners and and and Jerry Betman. He put a little bit of cold water on the immediacy of expansion. It seemed like in the summer, felt as though maybe the NHL and Houston were nearing some sort of expansion of some kind. I believe that there was a six month exploratory window that was signed of some kind, some

sort of contract to explore a possibility of expansion. Betman kind of put a little bit of cold water on that one. And maybe we won't see expansion as soon as we thought. So my question to you, Dave, do you want to see the NHL expand in the near future? I'm not set on it just yet for a couple of reasons. One being you got to get to the visions like the conferences to work is right now. No, you want to make sure that there's no imbalance, especially when the for the playoffs and playoff CD and like people say, well, if you're going to expand teams, then you should expand the playoff format, right? And we've heard Gary Betman be like, no, we're not changing the fantastic playoff format that the NHL currently has that nobody complains about at all. Perfect. You know, parody in this league is at a, we know, like they love to say that their that

parody is alive and well in the NHL. Okay. That's fine. But actually get up to 34 teams is why I think it's, it sounds like they want to get to eventually. That means more than half the teams are not going to be making the playoffs any parody anymore. Right? Well, it depends on how you view parody. I still think that there can be parody in the league and it still be a water down league is the problem. And that's the like that's the ball is going to my other point like talent wise. That's the issue for me. That's that's the problem for me. Like parody exists because although there's, you know, you could be the 33rd, you know, 32nd, 33rd team, you're still going to have good players, but it's the depth. That's where, you know, it really, really separates the haves and have nots, you know, at the end of the day. And like that's the, it's already tough enough for teams to, you know, field three competent

defensive pairings. We've dealt with that a lot in Toronto over the last few years, right? It's tough for teams to feel to starting caliber goal tenders at the NHL level. Have also dealt with that in Toronto in the recent past and many other teams around the NHL that, you know, kind of struggle to find goalies who can, you know, comfortably and capably string together a strong 82 game season with just two guys, right? And if you bring in another player, you're just continue to kind of stretch those players a little bit, right? All of a sudden that's, you know, 25 extra jobs that are up for grabs, but that means that you're bringing in 25 guys who wouldn't necessarily have been there. You're taking, I just, yeah, it starts to water down the league at some point, like for a majority of my fandom and your fandom Dave, like there's 30 teams. And then all of a sudden, you know, what was it? 18 years between expansion from, you know, the 2000 expansion until Vegas came in to play

in 2017, 2018. And then all of a sudden, you know, you get two teams in like a five year span. You guys just like, well, okay. And now you want to add another team. It's like, well, slow down here. Like, you know, I'm from 30 to 32 pretty quick. You don't need to go from 32 to 40 in the matter of a couple of years. So as you go 18 years without expansion. And then within 10 years, you want to show four more teams into the fold. I, I don't want to see that. Like I think we're good at 32. I thought we were good at 30, to be honest with you. I thought 30 was good. I understand why economically, the owners want to add more teams, more money in their pocket. Especially with TV. The big one, I think, especially for the angels, they want that TV. The TV deal looks more enticing when you got a Houston or an, you know, a Texas market. I think they said Atlanta, like trying to shove Atlanta down the, you know, down the hockey

fans, throats. And it's just because it's such a large market and untapped market, right? And it's like, well, I've been there before. It's like, yeah, but they still want to have like that market to market to whether it works. I don't know. It's failed twice before. Why a third time's a charm? I do not know. Houston, Bibi, different situation. Like I think, you know, hockey is growing in Texas. You know, I think the Dallas stars and the success that they have had is clearly showing that you're seeing. There's a lot of players who are coming from, you know, the South, coming from Texas, who are getting drafted, more and more players from Texas each year coming out of the draft. So I think it's definitely is growing. It'll get me wrong as much hate as you throw towards Gary Vettman. He has grown again. And we are starting to see players come from unnatural places, you know, non-traditional hockey markets as he likes to call them ostomatheas. They perfect example of it.

They really wanted to give Arizona team and eventually it led to an ostomatheas and a Matthew Nice. So thank you from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Gary, to stick into your guns there and not letting them leave when they wanted to way back when. But yeah, I don't know. I'm good with where we're at. Like, I don't think we need to go much further here. I expand to 33, 34 teams. I think we're good at 32. Yeah, I agree with that. Like, I don't see the rush. Like, if you're going to do it, do it right. Yeah. All right, that'll do for us here today on the podcast. And thank you all for listening and supporting the show.
