While I'm Tom Petrosky and I'm here with author and speaker June Hunt, June, many people at some time in their life battle depression. Can you talk to us about depression? Well, I would say first of all, recognize that depression is real, and it's acknowledging the feelings of being pressed down. When I think of depression, I think of a heart being literally pressed down. Now, we know what it's like to have a deep depression and if it's been raining, and there's some mud, you see an evident depression

by virtue of stepping in that area when it's been raining. Well, the truth is, the real life, real pain hits us in our lives. And there's no one who could say, oh, I've never, I've never been depressed, meaning we've all had our hearts pressed down. And that can be the death of a loved one. It could be rejection. It can be things that everyone goes through in terms of the loss of the dearest person in your life, whether it's death, divorce, whether it's anything that causes a separation. In fact, in the Bible, we read, I'm suffering and in pain, rescue me, oh, God, by your saving power. But we have to understand this. The pain is temporary. And not only

can we literally reach out in a the most positive way, calling upon God who created us. He infinitely knows us. And remember, one day he will put it into all pain and suffering, for crew believers, the Bible says he will wipe every tear from their eyes. There'll be no more death or sorrow or crying of pain. All these will be gone forever. That's in Revelation 21 verse 4. Now, this is where we have to acknowledge the importance of caring for physical needs, because there are times when people can feel depressed. And I say depressed like that, because I think of an iron. And I'd love to share depression this way. I think of one of those old-fashioned

irons that you put. Imagine it being on a heart-shaped pillow. You put that heavy iron on the kind of pillow that has foam and has a heart shape. If you leave it there, or let's say, too much, a month, the problem is that iron will literally depress the pillow and it'll stay depressed. Now, if you put it on the next day, take it off. That pillow could probably come back to its original shape, but when that heavy iron is on that pillow for a long time, that's when you can be in a state of depression. Not a state like Texas or a way that the heart does not respond

immediately as it would if we had not had that heavy weight. So, check the physical needs. In other words, go to a medical doctor. Sometimes there will be a certain medication. A person is taking and they need to ask for a different medication. Get nutrition that is healthy. I think that would be protein can be needed. But then evaluate the stress in your life. Interesting. The Bible says, give me relief from my distress. Stress can become distress. And sometimes we need to change and it can be who we are around. It can be a situation that is so discouraging. When we have a choice and many times we have choices. Sometimes we don't

feel we have choices, but indeed we have choices. I think also the spiritual part of us, we are body, soul and spirit. Many people, like me at one time, I didn't know anything about a spiritual life. And yet all the difference in the world, I grew up in a very painful home. And I received a great relief after entering into a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ. Welcome back to Hope in the Night. If you have questions about our topic tonight,

I would like to order resources. Please reach out to our support team at 1-800-488-HOPE or just text the word support to 709-19. That team works door-normal business hours and they can assist you in finding and purchasing materials from our vast library of over 100 topics. June was just reading from her keys for living book on depression and that's our topic for tonight. And when we talk about a keys for living book, it's really just a study project that June did about over 100 different topics. And when you open up that book, it's usually between 40 and 60 pages long, so it's not a really thick book that you have to get through. There's usually a few stories describing somebody who's affected by the topic or by the condition that the topic is talking about. And then there's some Bible verses, some causes, some solutions, and just everything you need to have hope when you're dealing with whatever the topic is.

June's taken all the work out of it, so you don't have to comb through the Bible for hours and hours. All the Bible verses pertinent to that topic are presented right inside the book. It's also a great resource to give to somebody. Maybe you're talking to somebody, a friend, or a coworker, and they let you know that they're dealing with something and they really can't seem to get help. And you're maybe feeling, boy, I wish I could help them, but I just don't know how to. While by going to hope for theheart.org and just clicking on store, maybe you can find one of our keys for living books on that very topic. Give it to them as a gift and just give them some hope after they read that. Let's get to tonight's caller, Joseph. Hello Joseph, welcome to hope. Hi June. Hi. How can we help you? Well, I'm not too sure where to start actually, but I'm coming up on one year sober from

Corn and Masterbation. Thanks, the Lord for that. Great. Congratulations. That's really significant. Yeah, I spent the last 20 years addicted to it. And well, the poor news led to something called the furry fandom, whether these animal human creatures just having lots of sex and the websites had content that died into things like incest, rape, orgees, homosexuality and beach reality. And over the course of time, it eventually led to beach reality porn, it led to me actually doing beach reality in real life with pets. Yeah, I gave the pets away and I haven't done anything since 2015.

But just I think a lot of the masturbation and porn was asking a lot of other symptoms, other at things in my life like emotions and things that I was trying to cover over to control. And well, I just, I wake up in the mornings now and I'm overwhelmed with facing the day. So when you're saying overwhelmed with facing the day, I'm hearing that you to a degree or quite down, have you thought about harming yourself? That thought has crossed my mind a lot. But I power through it and I keep reminding myself that that is not what God intends for people to do. Hmm. Good for you. That's true. When you say God, what, how do you just write God?

Well, there are two ways to answer that question. The first is what I know in my head and that's that God is a good God. He created the heavens and the earth and Jesus Christ is one and only son. He's good. He controls everything and he can make me well. The other part of me thinks that God's punishing me for something that I did in the past. Hmm. Is it a specific something or is it just the general up? I'll say everybody has that list. The things you know you should get around to eventually organizing the garage, updating important documents, taking care of long term financial planning. Life insurance tends to live on that list for a lot of people, not because it isn't important, because people assume it's going to be complicated.

I think the specific thing would be the, the born and the sexual related things. The interesting thing about the God of the Bible is he says, I've loved you with an everlasting love. Now that's Jeremiah 31 3. He says this knowing that all the while, all we like sheep have gone astray. According scripture, all of sinned. He knows that all of us would sin. And I think the point is the reason he devises a place called heaven for us.

Joseph, it's not like anybody that only perfect people go there because there are no perfect people. And it's made clear in the Old Testament and the New Testament. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. So the fact that we have chosen wrong, whatever area. And we have. And it's not like we accidentally fell into a hole. Everyone has chosen to go against the revealed will of God. And we prioritize what we wanted to do at the time. And yet my point of saying this is

after a while, things can get magnified. In other words, we can do something for a period of time. And we don't get the same. I'll say. I'm going to use the term excitement. When we continue or the same high, you can talk to anyone who's been on a drug of choice. There typically is a certain effect. And then after a period of time, it requires more of that same substance or switching to something else that will produce an increased high.

And what I'm saying is God knows this. And I think of the thousands and hundreds of thousands of people who finally said, you know, nope, I'm not going to do this anymore. And changing. And you know this. I know this. To change a habit, it's different than just choosing one time to not do something. But we get into patterns. And that's what becomes an addiction. But every year, there are thousands of people who, for example, they kick the habit of a drug of choice, whether it's alcohol, it's, I mean, there are all kinds of habit forming drugs. And that, but that's true of a behavior like gambling. There are people who

have taken their lives because they got into a habit of gambling. I just drove five. Something all wins, wins star driving from Oklahoma City to Dallas. I was going for a friend's birthday party, a three year old birthday party. But the point is, and I thought, you know, I see this place I'm advertised a lot in our area. And I think isn't that interesting? I, I, and there were thousands of cars. And then, but I've done, we've done study on this. We have what we call keys. keys for living on gambling. And the numbers of people who get hooked into that high, that feeling,

that rush, but then losing their homes, losing their cars, losing their lives, the suicides. And so what I'm saying is there are all kinds of areas where we can get addicted to, to something that at the time provides a, a rush, a, we feel differently, it's a different feeling. And some people, they're, look, they don't like the way they felt and they want to feel differently. Well, that's true, our material on sexual addiction. We, we describe situations, but it's the victories that God enables us to have. And that's, I'm going to just say, I thank you for calling

because you can, any, any person can feel down depression. You think of it, it's literally a press down heart. You put a, a hard, well, a big, heavy iron on a heart shaped pillow. And if it stays there for a long time, what would normally be like a foam pillow, it will lose its shape. And instead of bouncing back, it has a state of depression. The good news is, there are all kinds of things that we get into and yet that doesn't dictate our future. And you have already experienced

certain choices, you've made choices. And you said, you know, from 2015, you hadn't done certain things in the, from the past. Now, that's huge victory. I've ran, I want you to think about this one phrase. Life is the series of choices. Life is the series of choices. Say that, say that phrase. Life is the series of choices. Yes. And we choose many times to get into things that we regret and then we can get out of them and that is where we're going to go.

Well, my friend, I appreciate you calling because there are many, many people who do not reach out when they want to have victory in their lives and yet you have had quite a past of pain. By the way, tell me about what it was like for you growing up. How old are you now, Joseph?

Right now I'm 33. Okay. So that means you've got not just double the years for your future. This is important. You've got almost tripled the years of what would be typical for you as a man living in America. I'm just saying you've had a hard time. You've had a hard life so far. So tell me what it was like for you growing up. Well, things seemed to be okay until I turned about 10 years old and that was when my uncle was revealed and my uncle had been molesting my sister for like four years.

Maybe even longer than that and that led to a trial and my mother went through an extreme form of depression. And my laughter after the trial got over with that caused a rift to form between her and her family and then my dad decided that that was the time when he wanted to tell us siblings and my mom that he had been struggling with a porn addiction and that he had cheated on my mom. So I've had to an even bigger depression with my mom and I remember them arguing pretty frequently and I would try to kind of zone out when they did that. Most of the time I didn't have

like pretty much didn't have any friends after that and well there were always movies and cartoons to watch so I would do that. So it's a kind of escape. Yeah. Okay and you didn't have any friends. Why do you think that was the case? Well it could have been my personality. It could have been that I was afraid of other kids actually. Well what you'd experienced as a boy with within your family to know that your uncle had been in my resting her sister and here's a trial and this is this huge trauma. This is trauma.

And that can shut down any kid. In fact I didn't have those things but I was shut down because of bizarre things in my family. So I feel I can to a degree identify with not talking to friends. I had the people but I didn't tell anybody anything. Yeah. How do you explain things that are culturally unspeakable? Does that make sense when I'm saying? Yeah it does and I just found out this year that I had been in the same room when the molestation was occurring. I didn't know about that. No. Well so in your family there was this sexual addiction over here, sexual abuse there and

then then your dad. How did you handle that with your dad? I remember when he told me about it. I remember I went into my room and I climbed into the upper bunk and I just cried. I think a rift must have formed then because as I got older I just made it up in my mind that I looked and didn't want to hurt anyone in the same way that my dad had hurt my mom. I didn't really know it at the time but now looking back on it I feel like my mom kind of turned me into sort of a make sort of a stand-in for a psychiatrist or a psychologist because she was talking a lot about her family and what things that she went through as a kid. Well she would tell stories about certain times her sisters didn't treat her well.

So it's kind of like telling a lot of past adult things to you. I guess she probably thought of you as safe but you know she had her own trauma she was dealing with and you know people a lot of people think back on their childhood and they go oh I had the most wonderful childhood. I can't even identify with that and you can't either can you. Well I mean there are certainly good memories but I mean I wasn't raised in a bad home or there wasn't a lot of bad physical things that happened to me. It was my sister so I don't really understand why I have all this pinned up

anger and part of me thinks it's because I didn't really want to move from the one house that we moved from but at the time I thought I would do whatever it takes for my mom to get better if that meant moving and if that was the easier thing to do to not cause any more additional problems that's what I wanted to do. So you were at two degree trying to protect your mom. Yeah. Yes. Time's on. You know what that's called that's called role reversal. It's like you at a very young age kind of became the parent because you wanted to be a safe person for your mom to talk to

and it's like that's a heavy burden for a child. Heavy burden for a child. So you've carried like the weight of the world on your shoulders for a period of time and it's the unknown and children don't have the choices that they later have in the Delta. And so I just I think the issue let's make it clear you are right about God being a good God and he knows the plans he has for you. Number two you said but the other type of God that you see is like a punishing God. I'm going to ask Joseph has there been a time where you know you humbled your

heart and you received Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior giving him control of your life. Or maybe not. The first time I did that I was six years old that that was more out of fear from being cast into the lake of fire. Okay that's called fire insurance wanting fire insurance which is not really receiving Jesus himself as your personal Lord and Savior but I hear that so has there we said that the first time that was that. Yeah and then the second time would have been in 2018 when I got repaptized.

So I think then that would have been it but most recently with all everything that's going on I'm very scared that I haven't accepted him as my warden master so I hurt bored and Savior. So I pray that prayer whenever I'm afraid that I'd lost my salvation. Well I'm going to give you some good news. Based on the authority of the Word of God. Romans 8 chapter 1 says there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. No condemnation means no condemnation. Now there are times when there are godly people who have chosen wrong after yielding their lives

to Christ like David who got head and a fair with Bathsheba. King David and the Bible says he was a man and after God's own heart and so the issue is I want you to think about this in regard to guilt. You can say Father thank you that you don't condemn me and you don't want me to condemn myself. I reject these feelings of false guilt because they are invalid. I have accepted Christ. AT ר wag. Welcome back to Hope in the Night. Once again, if you're facing a problem, we would love

But Joseph, I'm hearing that you want to be basically set free of that which in the past has, it's like you're trapped in certain addictions. And an addiction is challenging to overcome, but it is absolutely doable and every year, thousands of people overcome addictions. But I'm hearing that I'm going to share something with you. It's something called how to have a transformed life. And when depression leaves your heart feeling pressed down, you have a choice. Everybody has that list. The things you know you should get around to eventually, organizing the

garage, updating important documents, taking care of long-term financial planning. Life insurance tends to live on that list for a lot of people, not because it isn't important, because people assume it's going to be complicated. That's why policy genius exists. These are the moments that make Nordstrom. Nordstrom. Bigger small. We're here for all of it. Celebrating 125 years with new moments still add.

Discover it all in Nordstrom stores and at Nordstrom.com. Of literally finding the formula I'm thinking for freedom. It's a freedom formula. And so. Okay sorry. Okay. Sorry I was hearing something else going on. Okay. Now I want you to imagine Joseph imagine like a target where there are rings. Did you ever shoot a gun or shoot a arrow? Facing a target. Okay. Well you know let's say that there are these three rings and in the middle there's this black large area. That's what we're going to call transformation.

And I'm going to share with you something that I think is so right for you. I wasn't going to do that this earlier and and I thought no this is I think this is for my friend Joseph. Okay. And there's this freedom formula that years ago I worked up. It's if you have a new purpose and a new priority and a new plan that enabled the formula for you to then have a transform now I'm going to explain it this way. Let's say the outer ring of that target is a new purpose. Now in the past whatever a person is addicted to let's say it's gambling and I'm choosing that just because there are many who lose their lives because of gambling this addiction.

But and you can apply this to anything where you were addicted before. But until you've got to have a new purpose instead of getting the high off of whatever you have had as an addictive activity. Now God's it's God's purpose for me is to be and this is the highest purpose of all to be conformed to the character of Christ. So I want you to say after me I'll do whatever it takes to be conformed to the character of Christ. Let me let me ask you is that is that something you would like to have for your life. Oh yes. Okay great. Okay. I want you to say that. I'll do whatever it takes to be conformed to the character of Christ. Be conformed to the image of Christ.

Say it again. I'll do whatever it takes to be conformed to the image of Christ. Great. Now the Bible says this is based on scripture. This is Romans 829 that we are predestined. This is amazing. This is that God. This is God's highest purpose for you and for me for every person it would be God predestined. He's determined how he is going to do this. He predestined us to be conformed to the image of his son. So God's purpose is to be conformed to the character of Christ. That is the outer ring of that target. Then the middle ring is not just a new purpose but a new priority. Well God's priority for you and me is to change our

thinking. And so this is based on by the way Romans 122 do not conform to the pattern of this world. But be transformed by the renewing of your mind. So what do you do? Well this is your part. I'll do whatever it takes to line up my thinking with God's thinking. Is that what you would want? Yes, it is. Oh fantastic. Okay. Say that then. After me, I'll do whatever it takes. I'll do whatever it takes to line up my thinking with God's thinking. I'll line up my thinking with God's thinking. Excellent. Say it again. I'll do whatever it takes. I'll do whatever it takes to line up my thinking with God's thinking. Perfect. Okay, that's that middle ring. Then the inner ring is a new plan. And God's plan is that we rely on Christ's strength,

not our strength, to be what He created us to be. In other words, the Bible says, I can do all things, not just all things, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me Philippians 413. And the point of that is it's not my strength, it's not your strength. Was Jesus all powerful when He was on earth? Yeah. So are you aware that when I never will forget when I read the scripture, it's Christ in you, the hope of glory. I thought I was very new to the Bible, didn't know anything really about the Bible. And I read Christ in you, the hope of glory. What do you mean Christ in you? Well, we receive Him as our

Lord and Savior, which you mentioned earlier. And as such, He has supernatural strength that I don't have and that you don't have, but He does have that. So I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. And that is for you. So your part is I'll do whatever it takes to fulfill His plan and His strength. Is that your desire? Oh, yeah. Okay. All right. I want you to say that after me. I'll do whatever it takes. I'll do whatever it takes to fulfill His plan and His strength. His plan and His strength. Right. So what that means is when you are feeling, oh, by the

way, you put these three together, a new purpose, not the old purpose of doing whatever feels good at the moment, because it ultimately doesn't feel good when it's not right in God's side. So you have a new purpose. I'll do whatever it takes to be conformed to the character of Christ, new priority. I'll do whatever it takes to line up my thinking with God's thinking. And then a new plan is I'll do whatever it takes to fulfill His plan and His strength. And what that means is that will give you a transform life. And I can hear you, you know, the things that don't work. There's huge advantage. I know this is going to be a strange thing. There are advantages of

making wrong choices, because you find out they don't work. You're eliminating the things that are not going to give you the peace you want. Does that make sense? Mm-hmm. Okay. So I'm thinking I'm going to send you something on depression, because so much of what you will read, these are called our keys, key keys unlocked doors. And at times we're stuck because there's we're locked into a pattern, but we can, that pattern can change. And we can affect the change in the strength of Christ. It sounds like you are understanding and getting what

I'm saying. Yeah, I am. I know it in my head, but it's hard to actually feel it. Okay. Well, I'm what I've described to you, this model of transformation basically isn't almost all of our keys, but this one will be in the keys on depression. And I want you to go through, you'll see what to do physically. You'll see what to do in the area of your soul. See, we are three parts, three parts of person is body, soul. The soul is the mind, will, and emotions. And the third is spirit. So we approach it from those five different ways, the body, the mind, this is the soul,

mind, will, and emotions. And then the last is spiritually. And if you'd like for us to talk again about applying all this, I hear that you're getting the basic part of the plan, but would you like for us to talk again? Okay, we will work that out. I like you, I, my heart's with you, I grew up with bizarre, you grew up with bizarre, and it wasn't good, but you have a whole future. Almost two thirds of your life, yet to live. It's good.
