About this episode

“I got an email a while back that I keep thinking about. It was from a woman and she'd been studying herbs for two years and she's gathering them jar by jar until she just had a whole cabinet full and then her mom caught a cold.”From the transcript

I once heard from a woman who had been studying herbs for two years and had gathered an entire cabinet full of them. But when her mom caught a cold, she stood in her kitchen with the kettle on and couldn’t bring herself to make her a cup of tea.

She was afraid she might get it wrong.

If you’ve ever felt that way, I want you to know that your caution isn’t a problem. In fact, I think it’s the exact instinct a good herbalist is built on.

In this episode, I’m sharing a simple way to approach herbal safety so that fear doesn’t have to keep you from actually working with the plants you’ve been learning about.

► Why being cautious about herbs doesn’t mean you’re behind or aren’t ready

► Why many familiar herbs, including ginger, peppermint, rosemary, and turmeric, may already be part of your everyday life

► When an herb, medication, pregnancy, health condition, or individual circumstance means it’s time to slow down and look more closely

► How to recognize when you can move forward, when you should proceed with caution, and when it’s best to step back and seek other help

► The simple green, yellow, and red “stoplight” framework I created to make herbal safety easier to understand and remember

After more than twenty years of teaching about herbs, one thing I’ve learned is that complicated information becomes much more useful when you can turn it into a framework that sticks.

That’s why I created this herbal safety stoplight. 🟢🟡🔴

Once you have a reliable way to assess the herb and the person in front of you, you don’t have to let fear make every decision. You can approach herbs with both care and growing confidence.

I teach this framework inside my free Mini Herbal Energetics course, where you’ll also receive a printable herbal safety guide you can keep and return to whenever you need it.

I got an email a while back that I keep thinking about. It was from a woman and she'd been studying herbs for two years and she's gathering them jar by jar until she just had a whole cabinet full and then her mom caught a cold. And she wrote to tell me that she was standing right there in the kitchen, the kettle's on and she couldn't bring herself to make her own mother a cup of tea because she was so afraid she'd get it wrong. If any of that feels familiar to you, this video is for you. So the fear, what if I get it wrong, what if I hurt someone I love? That's one of the most common things I see that really holds people back in herbalism. But here's what I think. That caution is not a problem. That exact instinct is what a good herbalist is built on. The people that I really worry about are the ones who feel none of that. So most of the fear I think comes from imagining that herbs behave the way medications do where one wrong dose becomes an emergency. But think about herbs you actually reach for first, right? Things like ginger or peppermint or rosemary or turmeric.

These are foods, right? You've been using them perhaps your whole life without a flicker of worry. Okay, so I'm definitely not going to tell you that every herb is a food and that you never have to think about it. There's a small group of plants that do ask for real care. And there are moments with a person, maybe they're taking a medication, maybe they have a serious condition where you definitely want to slow down. But the skill here isn't memorizing a long list of what's dangerous. It's being able to look at an herb in one hand and a person in front of you and then know quickly which situation you're in. And when the kind of thing you can do is step back and then just point them towards someone who can help. Once you're able to know the situation, the fear stops running the show. And you get to enjoy being an herbalist, formulating, making medicine, giving it to others, which of course is the point of this all along. I've been teaching about herbs for over 20 years now. And if there's one thing that people tell me again and again, it's that the way I teach is that I take something complicated and I make it simple. So that's what I wanted to do as safety. I worked at an herbal safety protocol until it was as clear as I could possibly make it,

something that clicks the first time and then stays with you. And what I landed on was actually a stoplight. Green, yellow, red. On the surface, this approach is almost too simple, but that's actually why it sticks. This protocol is the very first thing I give you in my free Mini-Earbow Linergedics course. Along with a printable safety guide that you can keep and come back to. Lately, it's been the piece that students write to me about more than anything else. Here's what a few of them have said. I always have the, oh God, am I going to kill someone? I love the green, yellow, red form of herbalism rosely created. This will carry me now. The stoplight concept was in a ha moment for me. Nobody has ever put it that way before and it makes it less scary to go forward. Green, yellow, red. You made it so easy to understand. You just gave a big boost of confidence. All right, do you want in? Check out the show notes to get your link to the free Mini Course. As always, thanks for joining me. I look forward to seeing you in the free Mini-Earbow Linergedics course.
