Rosemary is probably best known as a culinary herb, but there’s so much more to this familiar plant. Once you understand its warming, stimulating energetics, many of rosemary’s seemingly unrelated uses start to make sense.
In this short episode, I’m sharing three surprising ways to work with rosemary as medicine and showing you how herbal energetics can help you understand why a plant works the way it does.
► How rosemary’s warming and stimulating qualities can support circulation and help cold hands feel warmer
► Why rosemary is known for its impressive antioxidant qualities, and how research has explored its ability to reduce potentially harmful compounds formed when cooking meat at high temperatures
► Rosemary’s long association with remembrance and what modern research says about its effects on memory and cognitive function
► How rosemary’s aromatic qualities connect its traditional uses with what we now know about its chemistry
► Why understanding an herb’s energetics can help you see the connections between seemingly different uses instead of memorizing endless lists
That’s what I love about herbal energetics. When you understand that rosemary is warming, stimulating, and gently moving, its uses for cold hands, sluggish digestion, and a foggy mind no longer feel disconnected. You begin to see the pattern of the plant.
This is exactly what I teach in my Herbal Energetics Course, and I’d love to give you a sneak peek.
I’ve created a free Rosemary Monograph that goes deeper into rosemary’s energetics, research, preparations, dosage, and safety. It’s one of more than 60 herbal monographs included in the course.
When you get your free Rosemary Monograph, I’ll also let you know when enrollment for my Herbal Energetics Course opens.

Herbs with Rosalee — 3 Surprising Ways to Work With Rosemary as Medicine. Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
Here are three surprising ways to work with rosemary as medicine. Surprise number one. So rosemary can literally make cold hands feel warmer. Most people think of rosemary as a seasoning for potatoes, and it's great for that. But herbalists know it as a warming, stimulating herb. So for example, people with ray nons phenomenon, they struggle with circulation. They often have painfully cold hands. And there was a small pilot study where patients received a hand massage with rosemary, essential oil. And the result was that the rosemary increased the perception of warmth. In herbalism, we often describe plants by what they do in the body. And rosemary is warming and stimulating. And here's what makes rosemary really special. It's warmth is gentle. Rosemary's not going to overheat someone who's already winning warm. Surprise number two. Rosemary can protect you from your own grill. Not that kind of grill. A barbecue grill. So when meats are cooked at high heat, there's compounds that form that have been shown to alter DNA that can lead to cancer.
And in one study, researchers added rosemary extract to meats during cooking. It's high antioxidant content helped prevent those carcinogenic compounds from forming in the first place. That's pretty cool. And this isn't a fluke. Rosemary is often called the queen of antioxidants because of the staggering amount found in its leaves. All right, surprise number three. You don't even have to eat it to benefit from it. Rosemary is famously called the herb of remembrance. Students have been tucking sprigs into their books for centuries. And it turns out that folklore holds up. There's a double blind randomized control trial where students took rosemary for a month, and they showed improved memory, along with reduced anxiety and better sleep. There's also a study in elderly population, as little as 750 milligrams of dried rosemary had a significant benefit on cognitive function. In another study, Alzheimer's patients experience cognitive benefits simply from smelling rosemary. So rosemary isn't a cure for Alzheimer's, but as part of a holistic approach, there's
some really interesting research that looks genuinely promising. Here's what I love about rosemary. Once you understand its energetics, that it's warming and stimulating and gently moving, then all of these uses make sense together. And that's what energetics gives you. Instead of memorizing 100 herbs for 100 conditions, you start to understand how a plant actually works. This is exactly what I teach in my herbal energetics course, and I want to give you a sneak peek. I've written a rosemary monograph. It's one of 60 of the bonus monographs within the course. And this monograph goes deeper into everything that I covered here. So talk about the energetics, the research, how to prepare it, dosage safety. It's all in there. And when you get your free rosemary monograph, I'll also let you know when enrollment for my herbal energetics course opens. Check out the show notes to get your link. As always, thanks for joining me.
