Florida Gators look to overpower the Missouri Tigers with Jadan Baugh’s unstoppable ground attack. Can Missouri’s lauded run defense hold up, or will Jon Sumrall’s squad expose their weaknesses? Brandon Olsen spotlights why Florida’s run game, featuring Baugh and Duke Clark, remains the biggest challenge for opposing defenses—no team has found a blueprint to slow them down.

On defense, the Gators face the test of containing Jamal Roberts and the Tigers’ wide zone scheme while daring ex-Gators commit Austin Simmons to win through the air. Brandon Olsen details Florida’s tactics for stopping Missouri’s outside runs and presses the question: Will Simmons’ risky passing finally catch up with him? Key topics include defensive gap discipline, pressure strategies against Simmons, and whether Florida’s secondary can capitalize on Missouri’s turnover opportunities. Can the Gators assert their dominance and keep their SEC hopes alive?

Here's how. You are Lockdown Gators, your daily podcast on the Florida Gators, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Hello, and welcome back to another episode of Lockdown Gators, part of the Lockdown Podcast and Network, your team every day. Thanks for being a Lockdown Gators. You're first listen of the day every day. We are available, daily and free, but it was in podcasts and on YouTube, I am Brandon Olson. And this episode of Lockdown Gators is brought to you by game time, download the game time app, create an account, you should lock on to get $20 off your first purchase. And the Florida Gators take on the Missouri Tigers tomorrow. I think the Gators are going to win that game. Most importantly, the first reason, I don't know how they stopped Jaden Ball. I've talked about this a few times this week on Lockdown Gators.

I talked about it on Lockdown Gators, hit, which by the way is short form content about the Florida Gators hosted by me as well. You got four short clips a day and then two, five minute podcasts a day, just throwing that out there as well. I don't know how Missouri stops Jaden Ball if they can stop Jaden Ball. I think that there's statistically their defense looks really good. And I think that when you watch the film, I don't think it looks as good, but it's also just tough for me to truly gauge what they are there. Because when I watch their defense and I watch who they played or even if you don't watch who they played, just look at who they played. Well, first week, they played Arkansas Pine Bluff. Second week, they played Kansas. Third week, they played Troy. In my opinion, Missouri is significantly better than all three of those schools.

Arkansas Pine Bluff is an FCS program. Troy is a Sunbelt program. That's two and two right now. And Kansas, bad big 12 program. And so I think that those games, it's tough because I do think it's tough to gauge how good a team really is a run defense when you're just so clearly better than your opposition. I think that raises a big, not even a big question. I think it just makes it tough to gauge how good you really are defending the run there. Then you have last week where Missouri lost to Mississippi State. Fluff ball, well, Mississippi State running back had a good game. But again, I think it's, I don't think it's comparable to what you're going to see against Jaden ball or what you're going to see against Florida with Jaden ball with Duke Clark. And not in the sense of like, oh, well, you had a good game or a bad game against Mississippi State. So that that determines where you are. I think it's the opposite. I think you had a good game or a bad game against Mississippi State. And I don't know how much it really impacts what you're going to do against Florida.

Because when you play Mississippi State, you're going to face a team that runs a lot of one or zero tight end sets, right? And they are on that bryals bread where you got receivers abusing the splits out wide. You have everything else compact, which it's nuts to say, honestly, it's fun to see. It's just, I don't think it's an offense. It's ever going to win a championship. You got the offensive line. Everybody condense there and then receiver split, receiver split. And there's just so much space to cover and defend. And so you see defenses go light in the box, right? You see defenses oftentimes go with with a tight front. So that's the three down line. And there's it. You see teams go with line two linebackers behind them. And then everybody else is kind of out wide defending that open area, right? That open space. And so when you have a tight front there and you've got your nose tackle, usually head up on the center or head up on the center, you've got two down defensive linemen on the inside

shoulders of the offensive tackles. You could defend a lot there. Linebackers float at the ball, all that fun stuff. You're not going to do that against Florida. Okay. Like you're not because Florida's going to come out with two tight ends that's out with the injuries that receiver, I would be shocked if Florida didn't bring out three tight endsets. More of them. We've seen them before. I'd be shocked if Florida didn't bring them out this week. I'd be daring you. I beg all right. Like everybody talks about what's going to happen when a team stops Jaden ball, right? Everybody. They go, well, how do you beat the Florida Gators and everybody will tell you make Aaron Filo throw the football, right? Make Aaron Filo throw the football. I'm still waiting for someone to make him do anything. I'm going to be real with you. Like, I think that yeah, you do have to make him do that. But with how the offensive line is moving right now, how Jaden ball and do Clark are moving right now, I'll wait till someone makes him do that.

Like that's where I'm at with it is. I understand that's what you'll say. I understand that in theory, that's what you want to do, right? And that's not a knock on Filo at all. This is me saying that in theory, you go, hey, neutralize the best player always. So in theory, neutralize Jaden ball. Make Aaron Filo throw the football. Okay. When a team neutralizes Jaden ball, I'll worry about it. But until then, nobody's neutralized Jaden ball. No one has really come close to neutralizing Jaden ball. No one has been able to stop this offensive line when they get downhill. So what? Like I understand what people say where they go, put seven in the box. I want you to. I want you to because I think that as long as Florida has the numbers blocking wise and by numbers, I just mean they're even. That's it. Hell, we can give you one advantage too. I don't think you're stopping much.

That's really it. I don't think you're stopping much. And I think the Florida has too much speed and talent I've received. I think this is the weaker you could say, hey, really key in and try to slow them down. We're going to run the third might play might not. Bailey Stockton might play might not Eric Singleton Jr. is back. You still have Dallas Wilson. Look, if you want to like, if you want to really go heavy in the box and you want to say, hey, make Aaron Filo beat you, I promise you they're going to throw deep shots to either Dallas or Irish and Virginia. They'll have a challenge accepted. I promise you they'll do it. That's why I don't think it's as simple as make Aaron Filo through the football. I think teams go, hey, well, we haven't seen Aaron Filo have to do it. So make him do it and see if he can do it. Sure. But the fact that there's so many people that just talk about this game and go, well, just just stop Jaden ball. Just stop Jaden ball. What a fantastic concept. He's thought about that before nobody DJ Durkin, one of the most praised defensive 49ers in the country.

I'm sure he didn't think of, oh, oh, we should we should stop Jaden ball. Ole Miss team. There's in the cultural playoff last year. I'm sure they didn't think, oh, stop Jaden ball. It doesn't matter if you want to say, hey, stop this guy. You got to actually go out there and stop him. You always hear the saying, oh, it's a lot easier said than done. Stop Jaden ball is a lot easier said than done, buddy. It's a lot easier said than done. I don't get it. I understand saying, hey, you got to stop him. But I don't think it's as simple as you're saying, stop him. We've never seen like every game that Florida goes into will be, hey, that opposing defense is facing the best running back they've faced all year and that opposing defense is facing the best running game they've faced all year. Florida goes into Missouri. That will be the best running back and the best run game that Missouri will face all year.

Florida goes into South Carolina. That will be the best run game and the best running back that South Carolina faces all year. The following week Florida faces Texas and I'm telling you this right now, that will be the best running back and that will be the best running game that Texas will face all year and then you have a buy and then you face Georgia and I'll tell you this again. That will be the best running back and the best running game that Georgia will face all year. So I don't care what we've seen other teams do. I don't care what other teams have faced. I don't care if you're an elite run defense. I'm still going to take my back every single time, every single time. So I don't care if you're elite. I'm still taking my running game. Guess what? I don't know what you are. I'm taking my running game. I know what they are. They're ass kickers. They're mallers. They're mean. They're nasty. They're physical. I'm taking my back and my run game 10 times out of 10.

Tell someone stops them or until someone puts out the blueprint to stop them. All right, we've talked about before. If there's times where you could say, Hey, we've got the strategy. We just don't have the guys routine with the guys can use that strategy and get it. We've seen things like that. Until someone puts out the blueprint to stop them, I'm not going to say anybody stopped them. I'm not doing the hypothetical thing. Show me one time. Show me because no one's been able to stop Jaden ball. No one's been able to stop Duke Clark. No one's been able to stop the Florida Gators. Simple as that offensively. That's where Florida's got to do defensively. Different tasks. Still very doable. We'll talk about them when you get back from on Gators. Welcome to your most rewarding NFL season ever only on Fandall. How rewarding are you talking? More rewarding than a touchdown with time expiring. Michigan.

Thanks, you have been a lot of Don Gators. You're first listen of the day. Every day, we are available daily and free with us in the podcast and on YouTube and the Florida Gators on the flip side of things. How we always talk about how hey a team wants to stop the run. Florida Gators have to stop the Missouri Tigers running. If you watch any Eli drink, which offense, you know they're going to run a lot of wide zone stretch outside zone where everyone calls them. There's like slight variations of things. Some of them, I think depending on the terminology and who you're talking about, but generally, it's the same thing of offensive lineman blocking horizontal. Like they're moving horizontal or diagonal, you could say, and running back, make your decision, right? We've talked about a lot of Florida runs, a lot of stretch. So when you're running stretch, we got the white board. We'll pull it up in a second. When you're running stretch, you're talking about offensive lineman going either wide to their right or wide to their left, right?

And the thought is, well, we're blocking wide. We're creating multiple rushing lanes. And as they're running back, you make the decision there. Now there's times where you're running stretch and you do want to get wide, right? You want to get as wide as possible. And there should be an alley between the corner or receiver blocking the corner and your tackle, your tight end, whoever blocking their end defender. In an ideal world, that creates, I guess, an ideal world. There's no one there. But in most practices, that's where it creates your safety, your star, your slot, whoever it is against the running back. Okay? In that alleyway. And that's where you go, hey, my running back needs to make one guy miss break one tackle. And then he's got a long run, right? A lot of times it's, hey, guys over commit and that they come around the top and I feel like they're capping off that alley. I can cut back into the big gap into the A gap, wherever it is.

Sometimes some are cut back entirely and go the opposite way, right? You need to defend that, okay? And we'll pull up the whiteboard in a second and we'll show you, but you need to defend outside zone. You need to slow down to mall Roberts. Austin Simmons, we'll talk about him in the next segment. You got to make him actually carry the team here, right? And when you watch again in Eli Drinking with Topants, they're going to run outside zone and they're going to run it well. They always do. That's one of the reasons they go, like they've always got a really explosive running game. They've always got a running back near the top of the Russian yards leader board. I'll call it, right? Part of it's because that run game. Chip Lindsay, new OC. Again, you have a new OC now. It's different. Still good running game. Still, that's a drink with think. He's going to make sure you have that. And so we got it here. We got the whiteboard out for you.

We are again going to use the microphone to point, but I'm trying to get that. So you have outside zone here. Actually, we can just do this. Okay. You've outside zone here. Everybody's coming out wide, right? These are all arc blocks where they're taking big wide steps and getting out wide, getting in space, trying to move people. And so running back takes the hand off here. And he's going to have multiple lanes in theory. He's going to have multiple lanes to choose from. He's got to make the right call. That's why when you talk about some wide zone run games, a lot of it is, hey, that's where we need a running back that's decisive, good vision, explosive burst. You can get going there. When you run gap scheme, like when you're running counter, there's the less of a decision to be made. There's still a decision to be made, but less of a decision to be made and will replay to be made. Here, a lot of the owners goes on the offensive line, blocking things up well, and they're running back making the right decision. So here, you have everybody blocking horizontally. You have, and then we've got some type of run fits. Depends on what you're going to see there.

Here, interior defensive lineman, you need to hold that gap. You need to prevent that cut up the middle. That's what Jamal Roberts does a lot at a, at misery, the running back. And so you need to be there to be able to slow that down because that's where he likes to go. They run a bunch of stretch wide zone, everyone to call it, but he cuts it up. So you got to worry about handling that a gap right in between and they tend to run a lot to the right. So that's where you have to worry about that and slowing them down. So you want to have the A gaps filled out there where you have nowhere to go. That's probably going to be a bit of a two gap there by the defensive, into your defensive lineman where you want to call that no tackle, the tackle, playing over where they're lined up. Here's the detackle, no cycle. That's what you got. I realize I just put those backwards, but you get the point. Then you're going to look at the play side end, which in this case is going to be the F to manual your bodyshow, cam James, all of James McCray, whoever that is, that you got to make a decision at that point.

I'm a for the whiteboard down the top like this. You have to make a decision at that point. If you're either one of them and they're going to be coached to do it, but you're probably either going to try to blow up the offensive tackle, right? Push him back, destroy the lanes. You could also try to do that on the interior, but you're probably going to be double teams just a little bit harder. The F you might be double team, there's well if it tight ends in. So you're going to try to either blow back the offensive tackle and completely throw everything off because you take out the offensive tackle. You may be creating a lane for them to go right now, but they have to either cut there or they got to try to not get taken out and maybe bend a little bit, take things, or you can try to force the run even more horizontal. When you're facing outside zone, a lot of times you're fine just saying, hey, they want to go to the right. We're going to go to the right. That's fine. If you give up ground, I'm going to keep going to the right though. And I'm going to keep stretching that run and keep making them run horizontal. And at that point, cornering come up, starling them up, safety, linebacker, whoever it is,

can come up, or we just keep forcing them outside out of bounds. That's because at a certain point, when you run stretch, you're running horizontal, you're going to run out of room. You're going to run out of room. And so I think forcing that is important there. That side defender, whoever it may be, whether it's an edge, minebacker, DB here, I put it as a safety to draw that little line there. But there, where are we? There we go. Here, that little alley, you got to seal that completely to prevent that cutback. We had Len and Tangwell here, Tangwell here a few weeks before the season, right? And we were talking about outside zone, the Phil Trot line. And he was like, yeah, Phil teaches it. So you're always going to be ready for that cutback. You're always going to make sure that cutback's available there. So here, obviously, Missouri, not a full Trot line coached, but if that's the thing, they're still trying to teach and coach, you got to be prepared for that cutback and limit that. And the linebackers, you need to feel, linebackers need to feel especially the B gaps, right? Because in theory, you should have a nose tackle in the A gap.

He might be riding that or he might be trying to blow it up, just eating, eating blocks whatever it is. He might be coming in both A gaps. Might be his responsibility, right? And then backer might have the B gap with the F having the C or the F could go for the B gap, linebacker loops around and he's going for the C gap. Whatever it is, is again, everybody's going to be coach to do things differently. Got to keep that discipline. Because when you lose discipline, defending outside zone, that's when real explosives happen, right? This happens outside zone when you really just mow people down or when someone loses gap discipline. That's it. You could try and there's times where it's like, hey, feel free to shoot gaps, right? There's times where it's you're telling, I don't know, Brendan Bet. You've been, hey, Brendan Bet, feel free to shoot a gap. Right? If you could blow it up from the A gap and you can throw everything off, cool. Cool with that.

There's times there. There's also going to be times. It's like, hey, let's just really force him out. Let's just they want to block horizontally to the right, but drive that wave until they have to go out of bounds and then they have nowhere else to go. It's dead for them. Like the gap discipline here, protecting your run fits, that's going to be more important than I think anything else for stopping outside zone. Like yeah, you got to make the tackle, of course, that's football, right? But being engaged there in corners, this is probably going to be a game where you need to be really active tackling because if they are trying to just ride the wave and force them out, you got to be ready to go. You have to be willing and able to go. Can't you be like, oh yeah, I'm just going to let them get outside. If they get to me, I'm, you know, lightly, you got to be ready and active and willing to go there. And that is a thing too, where corners, you can't get turned, I think inside. If they're trying to force the run out wide, you can't get turned inside where now they have this side line to go.

If you're trying to encourage them to go into that alley and say, hey, we got a linebacker, say if he's star, whoever it is, if you're trying to encourage them to go into that alley, you can't give up the outside. Like if you're trying to force them in, force them in, if you're trying to force them out, force them out. Like you can't give them whatever they want them. Ideally, you're there to make a stop before they even get to make that decision, right? If I can shed and I can get there and then it's now the end and me and we're there closing things out. Maybe I'm trying to force you out wide more, maybe I'm trying to make the stop there. But for the floor to DB like everybody here tackling is vitally important. Force them into, I'm going to say unfavorable situations, make Austin Simmons beat you. We're going to talk about that when we get back with our thungators. College football is full of games you plan for all year, but sometimes the best memories come from the game you almost missed. Game time makes it easy to find tickets to college role masters that you want to see

with prices and fees so you know your total cost upfront. Finally, you can browse games, see a panoramic view from your seat before you buy and get tickets in just a couple of taps. Plus, zone deals that you choose the section and game time chooses the seats for you. Save money, I told you, I went to see Florida versus Yukon and Madison Square Garden there last year, but zone deal and the seats that I ended up getting were twice as expensive as the seats that I paid for. So great views, great value for me. That's my experience with it. I love it. Get your friends together, get your tickets, tell them it's game time, download the game time app, create an account and just go to the locked on for $20 after your first purchase in terms of life. Again, create an account being co-locked on for $20 off. You're juggling a lot, but you can still squeeze in a financial plan. The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Thanks again for making a lot of time. Gators, you're first listen of the day every day. You are available daily and free with some podcasts and on YouTube. And you know how I said, hey, it's not as simple as make a beach. It's not as simple as make awesome Simmons Beach, right? That's why we stopped there on there early. That's how you stop there on game plan wise. At least I'm giving you a game plan for it. Right? It's not just like, oh, you just stopped there on. Stack the box. I'm telling you stack the box. I'm telling you how to scheme wise beat outside zone. Go execute it, right? Austin Simmons, that's not thrown a fake this year. He's thrown 11 touchdowns, zero interceptions. I think that's going to change this weekend. I know that people can talk about Austin Simmons and the ties to Florida, right?

Because he was a one time Florida Gators commit. And then he transferred to or then he flipped to Ole Miss was the starter last year, lost his job after he got hurt to turn to that a jambless, right? And is now in Missouri. He puts the ball in harm's way a lot. But I know people are going to see no interception. They're like, oh, wow. He's playing so well. I'm not saying he's playing poorly, but he is putting the ball in harm's way a lot. And we spoke about this on the crossover yesterday with John Miller from Lotta on the Zoo that he puts the ball in harm's way a lot. He's been really bad under pressure. And like John Miller mentioned, like everybody's bad under pressure. Austin Simmons has been really bad under pressure. Missouri has five drops this year. None of them happened under pressure. So it's not like, oh, yeah, well, if they weren't drops, his stats would look better, his film would look better, right? He is four for 13 passing when under pressure. That is less than 31%. Okay. 54 regards.

It's four yards per attempt under pressure. Zero touchdowns went under pressure. Zero picks. He's been really nails when he's kept clean. And here's the thing. It's also not as simple because I hate when people say it. I just go, well, just generate pressure. Just just just pressure him, right? Blitz him. It ain't that easy. If it was that easy, everybody would just pressure. But Missouri has an effective run game and a really good pass blocking offensive one. Like they have an effective run game because the scheme and the back, they have a really good pass blocking offensive one. Okay. And so I think when you watch Missouri and you see Austin Simmons, watch the film and he is putting the ball in harm's way a lot. He has what I call arm arrogance. And that's not a bad thing. I know people think arrogance and like, oh, that's a negative. It's not a negative. I think having arm arrogance is a good thing. Especially if it's justified, if it's warranted. If you have just can in like he has and I will say this specifically can in terms of

velocity. I mean, talk about throwing the ball really hard. He could do that. And so when you have an arm like that, you should be arrogant, right? Tight windows doesn't matter. You can make any throw in the book. He can. But under pressure, he chooses to knock. That's the thing. He's not in pressure. He is getting rid of the ball generally underneath and it has not been pretty. Okay. He's not been awesome when pressured. I do think that he's done a pretty decent job of avoiding sacks when he's pressured. But I also don't think that he does a great job of creating when he's pressured. Okay. Doesn't throw the ball away much. So there. If you can generate a pressure, do it. I would like to see Florida's pastors playing this week include. Sim pressures include creepers, right?

Which I know people hate the terms. We get over it. It's football. But instances where you kind of make him think a little bit more. Right. Austin Simmons. He's always going to be praised for how smart he is. He graduated high school incredibly young. He's young to get into college all that fun stuff. He's still relatively inexperienced in football field in college. He doesn't have a ton of reps. Make him think make him work make him earn it. He's incredibly smart right? Make him execute consistently. That's it. Scheme pressures from different ways if you can cool. Bring heat when you want to cool. I will say when blitzed he is 23 for 42 eight touchdowns no fix. I think he might be one of those guys or it's like hey. Let's cry to rush for engineering pressure weekend runs done to whatever it is and have seven in coverage because he's pretty good when defending the blitz or when when passing off the blitz.

Right. He'll take a shot every now and then he'll let it rip. He makes plays. You watch the Mississippi State game and if they had better DBs picks. And this isn't just saying that he's you can watch the film. He's been pretty careless with the ball at times. Makes mistakes right makes mistakes has not been forced to pay for that's cool with me. I want you to keep doing that. You have not been forced to pay yet that bodes well for my team because if you haven't been forced to pay yet while playing reckless football. You're going to be forced to pay at some point Florida has to be the team to make him bet DJ Coleman. Let me see Bryce Thornton as well. Kanye Clark maybe you come up with one. But if you can generate pressure, you're going to really force Austin Simmons to make plays. And if he if I think this one of those games are going to go hey like if you beat me because I made you do what I wanted to make you do and you just bested me there.

Then so be it right. If I stop the run and I make Austin Simmons beat me throw in the football so be it. I also think Austin Simmons is going to be really I'm going to say really aggressive in this game because I do think that with Florida's DBs, we've seen how often they bite. I don't know how much Missouri is going to break out double moves, but we've seen how often they bite. We've seen them try to jump routes. If I'm him, if I'm any quarterback, but especially if I'm a quarterback, that's been getting away with everything. And I can throw the ball hard as hell. I am going to look at this defense, look at this secondary and you're all right. I'm going to take some shots. Again, I don't have much of an issue with what the defensive calls have been, especially coverage calls. I've had more issues with the past rush plan so far. I do think this will be a week where Florida can actually just like where we find out what their past rush is similar to how we find out what Missouri run defenses. Florida's past rush, you face Auburn, Browell spread, Byron Brown holds onto the ball

too long, not a real test of what your past rush is, Campbell, FAU, you covered the ball incredibly quickly, Ole Miss, you were trying to contain training that at times, trying to rush them at times. This one, I think you could be a bit more aggressive with the past rush plan or at least not be restricted with your past rush plan. And so I want to see you break that out against Austin Simmons. And I want to see how that'll help the secondary look. My complaints have been with how coverage has been at corner specifically. I don't think they've been great. I think they've failed execution wise more than schematic, more than schematically. That's where I got to see a change. It's again, it's as simple as that for me. That's where I need to see the team improve. Austin Simmons, he's going to test you. And if he doesn't test you, that's on him. Like any quarterback, especially when it's physically talented as him, should test you. If you're floored. So we'll see what Austin Simmons does. We'll see if Florida can make him pay. I think they can, especially again with how reckless he's been.

Because you watch the field, I was watching. I think it was the first drive against Mississippi State. And I was like, two passes that should have been picked off already. And it was like the first drive against Mississippi State last week. That there were two where I'm in. How the hell done? He's going to be reckless and dangerous. If you can get him especially early, based on how he's been under pressure. And film, screw the stats on film. I don't know if he's built to bounce back from a bad start. That's what I'm going to say about. I don't know if he's built to bounce back from a bad start. Nice to make a lockdown. Gators, you're a first-listen of the day. Every day we are available daily.
