1:05Oh, welcome to the Ringers Philly Special Shield Compod here with Rich Hoffman of the broad street bulletin and ace producer Cliff Augustin. The Philadelphia Eagles continue Rich to entertain us with a come from behind. I get, well, first they were leading then they had to come from behind victory over the Tennessee Titans and epic drive from Jalen Hertz at the end. 24-20, the Philadelphia Eagles are two and now we're going to get into all of it. Our big takeaways, get into the offense, get into the quarterback, get into the defense, get into some leftovers. I got some emails, but Rich, because now we're getting so many emails, some of the emails are like, no, this is for Rich. Don't be doing this on the other show. So Rich, we got a lot to get to how we doing my friend. Have you calm down? We're doing this a little bit earlier, so it's only been about what, three and a half hours since that drive. How are we feeling? I'm feeling great, Chille, but I didn't have to take a walk after it was over.

2:05I mean, that was, that was a stressful final drive and you know what? I'm going to take you a little bit into my apartment. On that last Jalen Hertz drive, I have in my living room area, it's right next to my kitchen. I have a breakfast bar over on the right where there are a couple of stools. Yeah. And I was taking notes for the Broad Street Bulletin and the Ringers Philly Special, the entire game. But on that last drive, Eagles down three, Jalen Hertz, no time outs. I said, it's got to be breakfast bar time now. Put the computer down, get on the stool on the breakfast bar. And let's lock in for this final drive. We can rewatch it later and take the notes. It's a similar thing. I've had some success anecdotally over my years. At that breakfast bar, I watched the Jalen Carter sack against the Rams. I think there was another couple plays. There was the one the throw against New Orleans. Remember the big play to Goddard in New Orleans during the Super Bowl year as well.

3:06So I only pull out the breakfast bar and the stools when it's really necessary, but it came through yet again. You've heard of the Kappati curse. You've heard of the Cliffey two curse. And now you've heard about the magic of the rich off in breakfast bar right there when the Eagles need to play, when the Eagles need to drive, he makes it happen. All right, Rich, let's get to it. There's too much to get to from this game. And we have to start with what you were watching on the breakfast bar. I mean, I assume this is the big takeaway for you is the bit. Sometimes we don't have to overthink the big takeaway, the lead of the podcast. And that is the final final Jalen herds drive. There is at that time, one 56 left in the game. Eagles have the ball at their own 35 because the Tennessee Titans can't figure out how to do a kickoff, even though this rule has been in place for like two years. Believe it, not not the best coach team I've ever seen. So it's like you're going to start at the 35 at the worst when you face the way you face the Tennessee Titans. Eagles have no time house. They need a field goal to tie. They need a touchdown to win.

4:11The O line is a mess. Dallas got her set of the game. I actually can't remember if it was say quite barkly in on that last drive or no, Rich, do you remember? Not that he was. No, I think he came back for a little bit in the second half, but I don't think he was in there at the end. Okay. So they're down. They're down. Sake want barkly. They're down. Dallas got her. Like I said, O line is a mess. If you believe in momentum, the momentum was going in the other direction. But the Jalen herds said, not so fast, my friends. I am a quarterback. Jeffrey Simmons and watch me carve your defense out, baby. You know, I was thinking about it, Rich and like, we can't. I was trying to figure out like what type of hyperbole was too much because my gut reaction is like that was an all-timer. It feels dumb to say signature drive because it's like the guy has won a Super Bowl MVP and balled out in two Super Bowl. So I don't want to get too carried away. But at the same time, just in terms of like games on the line, you have the ball.

5:12Are you just going to become an execute and take your team down the field? You know, you hear quarterbacks all the time, talk about this kind of thing. That's how you judge a quarterback, two minute drill, you know, even in Mike San does quarterback tears. It's like that's your passing situations. Yeah. Passing situations, you know, game on the line. And that's exactly what he did. So I've got all the plays written down. We can relive them here for the audience. But yeah, that was just a phenomenal drive from Jalen Hertz. Nothing fluky about it. Just dropping back, making terrific throws, wide receivers coming through for him. And there you go. You have a two and a star to the season. I think that's a great point you made that is it a signature drive? It seems ridiculous on its face because it's against the Titans week two. The man has played great in so many big games. But in a lot of those big games, I guess the first chief Super Bowl, he was able to drive them back at the end of the game and then never really got another chance after that one was over. But in a lot of these big games where it falls out, the Eagles are winning by a lot at the end. And honestly, I was curious what you thought about this.

6:18I love Jalen Hertz. But when Drew breeze who I have a lot of notes on his commentary from the game, when he said, there's nobody you would rather have in this situation, losing the game, trying to to drive you back. And they had a stat come from behind drives, which seemed a little misleading in my head. I don't think like at least it doesn't feel like that has been his forte over his career. Am I wrong about that? I agree with you. No, I don't have a lot of evidence here. You know, you could slice these things 20 different ways, but I'm kind of with you. It feels like in those situations now sometimes they only need a field goal, but it feels like things have gone wrong. I mean, just think about the last time they fade that face day, you know, Robert Salen, the Jets is the game that I'm reminded of, right? He was in. They were in a similar situation if memory serves. And that one did not end well. And there's been other games like that for sure. You know, a pro football reference keeps track of game winning drives, but I don't know. It's as he had one last year. It's as he has 13 for his career. It's as he has 10 fourth quarter come backs for his career. So maybe at some point we need to go through all of those.

7:25But I'm kind of with you. I don't remember an exact situation like that where it was just like right down the field. No questions asked everything was smooth because yes, there's definitely been some bumpy ones in the past. And then there's a bunch of one score games of some of those stats could certainly be misleading there where it's not like they come through every time they just played a bunch of close games. Cliff, you too. You got something for me. I remember like a bills game a couple years ago when it was raining out. I think it was like right. Right. That's one of the less a comeback game. Right. That's a good one. Yeah. Yeah. I went back and look at all of them. You know, like like Rich knows I don't remember anything that's happened in the past, but that's okay. Cause then you can relive it. Then you can have a game like this and be like, that was the greatest jailers game winning drive of all time. And somebody will correct me. It's someone will write into ringer Philly Gmail.com and then we'll go over it next week. So that's fine. But Rich, I want to go through the, but I'm with you. Yeah, when Breeze said that was like, all right. Now, Drew Breeze did love the Sean minion offense. So I will say he did. He did. But it is. And I think my point is like, when you look back over the past few years, because I just I did a cursory check of it. And it felt like there were at least as many knows as, as yes, as is what would qualify or whatever. I say that to praise Jalen hurts because that was like really special. What he did today, even against a poor opponent with the lack of help he had that was that was awesome. That was that was nails. That was so good. Okay. Well, well, here's the story of the early season, Rich. It's that the narrative on Jalen hurts.

8:52And his career with the Eagles feels to me very different this year than it's been in the past, whether it's a nationally or generally or even some locally and we've, we've, I feel like we've discussed it with nuance, but the situation for the most part has been. He's coming through. He's also in a great situation. He's got a great offensive line. He's got to great wide receivers. He's got a great defense. These two wins to start the season are because of the quarterback. There's no other way to slice it. There's no one else putting y'all well, they wouldn't know one this if this, but no, is because Jalen hurts has made place in week one. He made enough explosive plays for the team to win the game. And in week two, without him playing at this level and playing like he did on that final drive, they just flat out don't win the game because we'll get to the defense. I thought disappointing defense of performance. We'll get to the offensive line, probably the biggest concern on the team going into week three here. I will say the wide receivers have played well. There's no, there's no doubt about it that in this post age year brown world. I think you're encouraged certainly will get to Devon, T Smith, who was unbelievable in this game. And then don't have you in wicks proving to be a good number two here, but they go 65 yards on nine plays.

10:05Rich, I've got all the plays written down. Did you actually rewatch the final drive? I didn't get a chance to do that. You did. Okay, good. I did. Yeah. All right. It was great. Okay, maybe I'll do like three at a time. And then you know, you can you can you can fill me in here. So first three plays first play felt like a wickstrop. I don't think it was an eat. You know, might not have been the easiest catch, but you get a Don David and wickstrop. So you don't start to drive on a good note. Then you get a completion to Devon, T Smith for four yards. So now it's third down. You're like, oh, all right. We got third and six. And Jalen hurts finds Don and candles down field. Ray 20 yard completion to really get the drive going. So that's how it started their rich. Rewatch the third play. It was it felt like solo was really just going with one of two things for most of the game. It was either just drop a bunch of guys and coverage or it was cover zero bring everybody that one. He brought everybody and hurts stood in there. He trusted our guy, Donnie candles. I believe it was the third. Third down big catch by by Donnie candles to move the change. Obviously the biggest one because it was on the final drive. And it was a 20 yard gain. Yeah, Jalen took a big hit on that play trusted Donnie candles. Our guy to to just beast the corner back. He did and they kept going.

11:22Loyal listener Greg emails. I didn't get to this one during the mailbag last week in their group chat. He sent me a screen grab whenever Donnie candles does something. He messages the group chat light the lamp. Listen, that that my catch on among the Philly special audience because this is that David and Rick's has been a nice find so far. Nice very nice start to his Eagles career. Five catches for 74 yards in this football game on six. Target's the chemistry he has with Jalen her even though this is the first time they've played together is really really encouraging. So those are the first three. So they get going with that 20 yard completion. Then it is Jalen hers to Devote Smith for nine yards. This is a great catch like you mentioned. Bobby Sala was sending the blitz blitz was coming. Hurts still makes the play and the next one here. I think underrated play of the possession rich, which I didn't realize right away until I was going through the play by play Titans Blitz.

12:29Eagles do not handle it well. It looks like you are getting hit with a sack big tackle for loss Jalen heard somehow miracle throw away to stop the clock. No intentional grounding and you avoid the tackle for loss. So one of the maybe the biggest play. Not the biggest play. But one of the bigger plays on the game winning drive was a play that was one of the only two incompletions. Had that written down it as much as we love the six completions and the run on the final drive. Actually one of the incompletions was one of the most important plays because like you said, that was a weird play Jordan my lot of look like he was helping out cam Jergens on Jeffrey Simmons. Jeffrey Simmons might have held him a little bit. I think he might have it could have been called defensive holding but Jordan Milado was so worried about Simmons on Jergens that he just let the edger us or just go right the jail in hurts and it was like he's dead to rights like they he has no chance to get out of that play.

13:31And if he was outside of the tackle box and they did show a pretty good replay rare good replay from from Fox. I think he was but it was by like a foot he was outside the tackle box and he was a foot over the line with the throw to it was very close in both respects. I do think it was legal. I think they got it right. All those but it was it was not there was not a lot of breathing room on either side there and you're right. That's a huge play. At the same time if it was vice versa, we might be on here. Come on. How do you not call intentional grounding on that one? I don't know. I don't know if there are Titans message boards or what but I'm guessing that somebody in the it didn't feel it didn't sound like there were many Titans fans there. I mean that was rich. We've been to away games where Eagles fans have taken over. I know you and I've covered some of those together and then we covered him separately and we flashed him on TV. I mean that had to be up there with that that felt like 90% that felt like a lot of the game. I think it was the link on it on actually felt I've said this before when you're out of the way it's like because you're more excited when you're at an away game because you feel like you're taking over their stadium. So you kind of get to another level and man Eagles fans if you are a listener who went to that game. It was incredible on TV from really the start but certainly down the stretch there when anything positive happened for the Eagles. The place was just going crazy. I think the one that stands out that you and I covered was that little soccer stadium when they put it

14:56on the way the chargers. I was like there's only 20,000 people and it okay I don't know what the exact split was but let's say it was 50 50 the 10,000 Eagles fans were so excited to be there because you know you're in Southern California on a vacation and it was the year the Eagles won the Super Bowl too. So they were playing some really good football as well. And that's got to be so demoralizing for the other team when this felt like more and this was a football stadium. This was a full size football stadium that they were able to take. So we're going to go over and we'll get to the Cooper touchdown in the second here but the pop after that touchdown was rewatching that you know when I did after my my cool down walk and going back to rewatch it. I rewind it a couple times just to hear the fans like obviously it was a great play but that was like really impressive by the Eagles fans really. The audio on Fox or what but it really did sound different this game was like oh my gosh this is how many Eagles fans are in that stadium yet. You couldn't watch the game without noticing that it's okay he gets the miracle throw away then he scrambles for four.

16:05Next to replace scrambles for four then great play maybe the play of the drive finds Devonte Smith in between defenders great pass great catch 19 yards and then of course the final touchdown to Darius Cooper to end it to end it and give the Eagles the lead I mean those those last two place rich were incredible. Awesome I mean and they did a good job of showing this on on Fox as well they go cover to on the I forget what exact down it was the Smith catch and they throw it right into the turkey hole good play by Jalen and Devonte. She'll we talk about how he is like the he's got the highest approval rating among Philadelphia athletes maybe maybe of of all athletes and part of it is just that guy is like a ballet dancer on the sidelines like it's just so aesthetically pleasing to see him get those those toes in or feet or whatever it is now the one thing I was wondering watching it live he did make a little bit of a gesture I was wondering if he didn't think he got his feet.

17:15And he did get his feet right before his arm came down and that was a great throw and a great catch on that one. Well I wonder when you're a wide receiver may be can ask coach Flynn about this when you're a wide receiver and you make a play like that you probably don't know if you actually you know like how are you supposed to know if your feet got in or not like you're doing everything you can you're trying but it's not like you're probably just you're not staring at your feet and making sure that they got in like Jamar chase I don't know if you said the saw the Jamar chase catch today that was unbelievable in the end zone was very it was a similar thing where I'm like wait a minute because you watch those plays live some times and you're like there's no way they got their feet in and then they showed the replay in slow motion it's like oh my gosh those two feet are in there and just realize how skilled these guys are and I just think of like trust when I think of

18:18Devanta Smith you know it's kind of like Ranger Suarez when he was with the Philly just like I trust this guy you know he's that this this this moment is not going to face him he's going to make a play if there's a play in his direction he's going to make it and I know he had the drop was that last year or the year before I forget he had the big drop late in the game but it's just like no one even got mad about that because you're kind of like okay that was why it's just that's one time the next time he's out there he's going to make every play and he just had a monster game you know after a lack Luster week one where they didn't really do a good job getting him the football in this game is 10 catches for 117 yards on 13 targets and like that wasn't earned 117 yards these were not gimme's these were not oh my gosh scheme up and he's wide open and there's all kinds of space there just his I remember even during the pre draft process where I'm like you know what I'm fine take a chance on this guy he did it in the SEC and just his awareness along the sidelines his instincts is just like the natural feel of playing the position is up there with anyone in the NFL and so

19:27that that was just an amazing catch 19 yard or there and then I did rewatch the touchdown so 14 seconds left balls at the three yard line first and goal Titans call time out it's another zero blitz like you mentioned Robert Salah was doing the zero blitzes man so man coverage zero blitz that just means it's man coverage across the board no safety and one thing that defenses have to figure out is that with two wide receivers are stacked next to each other and I don't know the exact alignment of the Eagles once here but basically you have to decide how do we avoid the pick play you know there were many years where the Eagles were just getting picked all time to time they couldn't figure it out but one way to do it is very simple all right I'm going to take the guy who cuts inside you're going to take the guy who cuts outside so it's kind of like we don't know who we have until they declare what direction they're going to be and if you watch it on that route there is Cooper starts outside create some confusion and then comes back inside and there's no one near him I mean to but it looked like

20:31Devont Smith slipped on the play right rich did you see that he did but defonte Smith was huge on that play and I got to give Sean manion some credit he's got a little Patoolo and I'm sure and then he's scheming red zone some stuff in the red zone now he's doing it in different ways and I think the key there like just just watching it a few times was like you said the defense has to figure out which guy is outside and which guy is inside and at the very last second Devont Smith who was running the outside route motion to the inside and they messed it up the two defenders the inside guy still thought he had Devont Smith the outside guy was right and then Jalen is rolling I think looking for Devont on that play like you said he slipped so he really wasn't available on that one but oh wait those guys completely messed up let me just float the ball to Darry's Cooper who is wide open in the back of the end zone I think that was a really nice play by Jalen hurts number one but give Sean manion some credit go high five that guy in the in the booths next to you Mr. Manion because that was well done on the goal

21:36and Sean say it's going to want to do like 45 minutes on that play alone I think when we do our film breakdown this way so there was incredible incredible drive 65 yards on nine plays Jalen hurts 6 for 8 for 61 yards and a touchdown and keep in mind one of the incompletions was a drop or a borderline drop by Wix and the other incompletion was a throwback that if he didn't throw it in complete would have resulted in a sack any also ran for four yards there so Jalen hurts with a terrific final drive there did you see the clip of Jeffrey Simmons coming over to him rich during the Fox interview I did see that and Jalen said you started that bleep I had to finish it I will say I want to make fun of Jeffrey Simmons for his make Jalen hurts play quarterback comments they made him play quarterback and he was awesome playing quarterback that said Jeffrey Simmons had an awesome game to my god he just stepped back they couldn't block him later later really could not block him like like cam jerk it's not going to sleep tonight he's just going to have nightmares of Jeffrey Simmons just creating havoc left and right but yeah it was an interesting moment because like you said Jalen hurts had you started that bleep I had to finish it and yeah the way I read Jeffrey Simmons was kind of like bro I was just

22:55coming over to say like good game and then and then Jalen hurts like all love bro all love you know my first got that he got that in there which was interesting and ZB was asking him in the post game press conference about it and he just said I heard it and then he asked him again he said I heard it and then he said how you know how do you think you did you respect how you think you responded and he said we won the game Jalen hurts so yeah listen if you're gonna worship Michael Jordan you can't let something like that fly and then I also saw Jeffrey Simmons was asked about it in the locker room and he was like really trying to explain himself like yeah I wasn't saying he's like I wasn't saying he couldn't play quarterback I was saying he makes so many plays with his legs that you kind of need to keep him in the pocket so it's like he's been around long enough to know how that type of comments gonna go over I think even though I think there is some truth probably to his explanation. I do feel bad for times at the for the athletes because you know people tweet out one part of a longer quote it gets taken in a context then it gets

23:58aggregated on Instagram and it's on YouTube it's on all these talk shows are reading the yeah it's leading first take all of a sudden oh my gosh yeah make him play quarterback I think was roughly what he said though and I think Jeff resumption you gotta know you gotta know like if whether you meant that or or you actually were like no I have a lot of respect for him while you didn't convey that perfectly if you're gonna use those comments so I think that's that's a fair way to do it. Shilt one last thing on on hurts to by the way when you're when everybody is reading their their national content or listening to their pods or whatever the frauds you're gonna be able to see them this week because if they say oh you know jalen hurts two interceptions played a mistake free game straight by a bad team with this elite roster you know it's not that impressive you know we think the Titans are gonna be terrible you know that they didn't watch that game they didn't watch the game yeah that's a good call yeah that's gonna be a big tell they didn't watch the game if you go box score although I mean even true breeze is saying with two minutes that he's like they have a great

25:03offensive line I'm like bro have you been watching this entire game what are we watching here Drew the answer is no he might not have been watching the game I don't know what he was doing you know I thought it was Brady Quinn until half time can I be honest about that I thought it was Brady Quinn and after the game that you face well the other thing that was funny too was that breeze was talking and he was doing these long monologues and the fox score bug was like voice of Mike Pereira and I was like that's my Pereira what's what's going on right yeah I don't think they'd be here from Mike I can't remember if we heard did was he did did they go to Mike for the intentional grounding I can't remember I don't think we went to the rules official once the entire game but they they had his name of multiple times okay like I guess that was for now that I think about it that was kind of the only controversial call unless I'm really forgetting about something was the probably that intentional grounding I mean there's a little holding here and there but yeah otherwise there wasn't a lot of that stuff which was nice it's nice to not have to talk about that for 20 minutes on a post game pod so there weren't too many

27:15all right we're back on the ringer's Philly Special again remember subscribe to the broad street bulletin as I do Rich will have a recap his thoughts his analysis in your inbox Monday morning I'm sure they'll be Philly stuff this week sixers are what a month month away less than that something like that so there's a lot going on and you can check it all out on the broad street bulletin all right Rich so I looked into the offensive numbers and they kind of surprised me a little bit we all we know we played this game offense good bad or not sure do you have a gut instinct on this one offense good bad or not sure before I hit you with the numbers I think the passing offense was good just because jalen like I think he was good the whole game it's it's really hard to separate that from the rushing offense and how bad the offensive line was but the receivers were really good and stepped up in key spots so I think those numbers might be

28:16a little better than than we suspect but but you'd light on me so this was a 49th percentile based on EPA per drive so almost exactly league average and it was 40th percentile based on success rate which is just are you how often are you producing positive plays now that surprised me but then I remembered that the run game was bad in this game and they were running the ball a lot on first and second down and I know the coaches will tell you well that got us to third and so and so but it's just like that is not actually how you want to live in the NFL if you really look at it I know our friend Dana is is very passionate about this but he is right you know you don't want to be playing for third and short you want to be trying to get a first down before you get to third down now early in this game it was really working for them which makes me a little bit nervous because I think they might lean into it but it was like run run third and four hurts completion first down run run hurts third and five completion that's just a very hard way to live in the NFL you want to

29:21be more aggressive on early downs when the team really doesn't know if you're going to run or pass those are good times to take chances on creating explosive play so this was really a big hit or miss game you know because they had eight possessions and they scored three touchdowns and one field goal and that's pretty good if you're if you're you know producing points on half of your possessions and three touchdowns on eight possessions that's good but the other four possessions two resulted in turnovers and the other two were drives that totaled negative 11 yards so they were like really really bad you know there wasn't like a five-flade drive for 38 yards or you end up punting it was it was very boomer bust so yeah very mediocre game when you look at it statistically I'm with you I thought when I looked up the numbers it was going to be a little bit better than that maybe at least in the 60s just because of how well it felt like jail and herch was playing that entire game but again the run game really wasn't working for them so the box score numbers are good 72 plays 341 yards and I think given the circumstances the fact that the old line didn't

30:28play well that's a one Barclay left the game it was it was his first carry right after his first carry he's out of the game and then he comes back a little bit in the second half but he only had four carries for nine yards in this game Dallas got it leaves the game in the first half you add all those things up and it's kind of like okay that is sort of impressive that you got to a mediocre game with all those things happening question for you did you see Sean's tweet because I know the other day you talked about hey Sean I can't be watching all these these screen grabs you have this is there's too much of it did you see Sean's tweet from today I did not I feel like he should he just needs to text me personally Rich I can't just be on a football Sunday I can't be online check you know I love the guy but you know I need like I don't like to log on to social media a lot during the day because I like to form my own thoughts but let me see let's do this in real time all right so I'm logging on man he has tweeted a lot uh today he's got videos out okay Bryce young

31:32no deva is it Devante Smith no not Devon Smith oh oh I see the one you're talking about okay do you have that up you want to read it out loud yeah let me let me do it no I'll take the credit because I was the one yeah I get it you're running around uh so I'm gonna do the rare success rate uh stat from from me from Sean he says that the Eagles have the largest difference in early down offensive success rate versus late down offensive success rate to start a season I assume that means through two weeks since 2022 early downs 31.5% which is third percentile and boy does it feel like it late downs 60.6% 96%ile boy does it feel like it and that's that just sums it up Jalen Hertz is bailing these guys out through two weeks great tweet Sean sorry I wasn't paying attention earlier all right I always like when there are stats that back up the i-test like like you said

32:33it feels like it so that is a very tough way to live when your early down offense sucks and your late down offense is elite that's just probably you know when I do stuff at the summer where I'm like all right what teams are gonna regress all that that is one of the things that the nerds love to look at is that like all right this team last year they were living off their quarterback bailing them out on third and fourth down but the early down stuff wasn't good the offensive coordinators not doing a great job and so this is only two weeks I want to be clear I'm not saying that about Sean me I think this was a very tough sort of Sean minion game to evaluate rich because it's like yeah I'll give you the number so I did look up the numbers on early down so on first and second down they ran the ball 28 times for 71 yards that is 2.5 yards per carry or is it 2.9 yards per carry their longest game was nine yards on those 28 runs nine yards on those 28 runs and so

33:36it was a 24th percentile success rate on early down run so you know to just translate this to English for those of you who don't like all the stats and all that stuff one of the worst things you can do as an NFL offense is run the ball a lot on first and second down if your run game is not good if your run games good you know 2024 you want to run the ball on early downs because your gashine teams go ahead if you're not good you are wasting down you are throwing away plays you are putting your quarterback in a very difficult situation now jail and hurts came through in those situations over and over again today but that's not the way you want to live so I have that in one part of my brain with Sean minion I'm like this has to get fixed you can you know if your run games better and you want to run the ball more on early downs go ahead otherwise you got to be more varied on early downs just get some easy completion scheme some stuff up take some shots down field so that it's not so hard but the other aspect of it is to what you were saying earlier the past

34:37in game looked good there were guys who were open it didn't look like totally unfamiliar to everybody you're getting good performances out of your new wide receiver you got your best wide receiver the football and most importantly the quarterback looked really comfortable today and so I'm going to give the offensive coordinator credit because these weren't all like you know scramble plays and create on your own like there was stuff instructor he's throwing the ball to the middle of the field way more today we'll look at the numbers later this week but you were scheming guys open and so the fact that the quarterback looks really comfortable is a feather in Sean minions cap now let's just put the ball in his hands a little bit more on early downs and maybe we can make things a little bit easier on offense so that's kind of where I'm at after just two weeks of the minion experience I think that first drive was pretty emblematic of what you're talking about there because Jaylen had to go I think they went four for four on third down now now or on third down maybe they didn't get one of those because there was a push in there but he definitely had to make three pretty long throws on that drive which then sets up the red zone play

35:42where he tries to squeeze it in there and it's his worst throw of the game and it's it's a pretty like that that is the one disaster play from him that you know you can't have no no bones about that but it just went to show like man he had to do a lot and he had to be perfect that entire drive and then you finally get in the red zone and he tries to be perfect again and it just didn't happen so completely agree with what you're saying felt like there were a couple of times where they threw on first down and then they were able to run on second and two second and one they got to do more of that because like you said the runs the amount of negative plays that we're getting on those early down runs it's just it's really hurting them they're they're behind the sticks and it's like the idea of trying to be third and five like you said if the Eagles were at third and five on every possession I still wouldn't like it because I agree with what they knew says about trying to get the first downs right away but half the time they're in third and 12 because somebody gets knifed in between and tank biggies is on his butt in the backfield so yeah that part was definitely

36:45frustrating I mean this is the whole reason defense is played the way they they they play because they're like it's really hard for an offense to put together an 11 play drive without an offensive lineman screwing up without a penalty without a drop like that really requires a high level of precision and then they have to convert in the red zone like this is how defensive coordinators that that's what their mindset has been in recent years that's the whole reason why they're playing the way they are hey limit explosive plays make them work for it most offenses are not going to be able to do that that first drive of the game I mean they go 15 plays 64 yards it's like man you shouldn't need 15 plays to get 64 yards you know and then a 26 yard completion in there to Don Tavine wicks that was that was very nice so yeah but that's when I wrote down this feels like a lot of run run pass and Jalen hurts converting on third down that interception I want to get a closer look at it my my gut instinct I know some of my group chats were going crazy about it I was

37:47kind of like that so this seems like a nice play by the safety reading Jalen hurts his eyes I'm not excusing him obviously red zone interception where they return it to your red zone that is a game changing play and some games you're not going to be able to overcome that but in terms of like the scale of egregious mistakes where tennis like you can't ever let you can't ever make that throw the worst decision I've ever seen I feel like it's probably more you know around a four or five than a nine or a 10 but I reserve the right to take that back after I watch the film I this week and try to look at exactly what happened yeah he did make a really nice play that that safety that said like you can't make that throw like like it just it just wasn't there now to his credit and what made it better for the Eagles is that in passing situations Jalen just the Kepler and it rip right that was the big question before the season if you did get turnovers were they going to go into a shell were they going to get conservative he didn't get conservative the rest of the game no doubt so so you have that you have that interception next drive they go 65 yards on 11 plays

38:52macaque lemon with a nice third down conversion there they score a touchdown then another very methodical drive for each 14 plays 81 yards hurts finds Don Tavian wicks on fourth down hurts with an option run on third down you threw a dot to wicks again third and again third and 12 17 yard completion like that's great that the quarterback did it but the quarterback's not always going to be able to do that especially that play there was pressure in his face and then he buys time and finds Devonte Smith for a 23 yard touchdown so I thought that drive specifically other than the last one that was kind of Jalen hurts is on fire that 14 play 81 yarder that ended in the Devonte Smith touchdown also another nice play by manion to getting getting Devonte on the the cross her over the field now Jalen hurts makes a great play to step up in the pocket on that one as well but you could see thought behind that right because he had the two guys on the other side run shallow routes the sort of suck in the defensive backs and over the top Devonte goes I

39:55thought that was that was well skimmed up and she like you said like that was a good drive and at that point you would think with everything they were talking about how hot it was it was going to advantage Eagles right because I think it was 26 plays on the first two drives I don't remember what the after the third drive but there was 39 to 13 like late in the first half 30 now into 13 it was crazy yeah Fox said 14 points to 13 plays at that point and you're thinking okay in general the defense is going to be more tired and you think like all right the offense has not been able to run the ball that well to this point but they've been on the field Jeffrey Simmons all these guys are sucking wind it's they they've been on the field the entire time and that is not how it played out at all yeah you're right I mean they yeah they should have been they'd be interesting to look at their snap counts because they should have just been gas where you know like if you played this out you probably think like man second half we can come out and just run the ball if you had a dominant offensive line you really feel like they just had to play 40 snaps in the first

40:59half let's come out let's run the ball on them in the second half but the Eagles kind of just aren't built that way it feels like right now so after half time they're worse drive that's when it felt like the old line is just really getting worked here three plays negative 13 yards they have another drive they kick a field goal but they went just 16 yards again the Titans are incapable of of kickoff doing kickoffs so the Eagles started on their home 35 they get 16 yards and they're kicking a 58 yard field goal which is just I mean again incredible work don't worry I have more stuff on solid cable if this was a Titans pod we'd be talking about Joey's live for 40 minutes after this was over I know I just want like it feels like that should be something that you would have been able to get fixed at some point in practice or with your roster or whatever because it really I mean now that we're going over it like it kind of there's another world where if their special teams are good they win the game for sure absolutely right yeah I didn't even think

42:01of that on the final drive they were so sick of him kicking the ball out of bounds he said all right all right uncle we'll take it at the 35 fine fine let's just let's just avoid that faster that's just not how anybody plays anymore remember if you listen to the positive in the week I told you they started the Robert Salah era with a kickoff that went out of bounds I mean that's incredible so this didn't just creep up on them like they had last week to look at and they couldn't get it fixed this week here so anyway you kick the 58 yard field goal then you go three and out again so this was the three possessions in the middle of the game you have three drives that gain a total of five yards on 13 plays so that helps explain why the overall maybe you know advanced stats didn't look so great because you had that three possession stretch there then in the fourth hurts a second interception man that could you know that there's a scenario where the Eagles win this game by like two or three touchdowns if if the offensive line is a little bit better if you don't throw that red zone

43:03interception because Devante Smith is wide open deep looks like a long touchdown even when the balls in the air I'm thinking touchdown you know because we don't see Jalen hurts under throw balls like that but then when you see the replay cam jurgens gets smoked on the play Jalen hurts is getting hit as he throws so I don't put that one on Jalen hurts that ends up being his second interception that was another moment where it sort of felt like this might not be the Eagles day yeah and when you see how short that ball was like I said right away he had to have gotten it like Jalen hurts does not miss throws like that on the sidelines and as it turned out cam jurgens for the 800 time and I'm sure we'll talk about the entire offensive line at some point here he gets beat right away by Simmons solid did a good job getting a one-on-one there and Kendall slid the other way and hurts I mean turgans get smoked and hurts get smoked he gets hit hard enough and yeah it's a huge play they come back next possession and go right down the field so there you go all right let's talk about this offensive line rich because news Sunday morning that they're going with Drew Kendall at

Smith who was all over this during the week say like nope this actually is the real possibility that you should pay attention to and that is what happened so lambda dickerson on IR and Drew Kendall at center cam jurgens at left guard the old line did not look good today now this was granted this was one game so I'm not saying everything with this decision you based on this but through two weeks I mean if you were to tell me that through two weeks I was going to have major concerns about the Eagles offensive line I don't think I would think that they're two and oh so what do you make of that decision where you're moving to guys does it indicate to you that they feel like let's not even think about it you know maybe lambda dickerson comes back at some point but we don't want to pretend that that's definitely going to be the case how did you read this decision they kind of move both those spots and move jurgens to guard well first I got to say I was stunned that it wasn't Fred

45:11Johnson lining up at guard after they showed us that practice the the old competitive advantage played again which I got to say you you might have pulled the Titans Nick but it didn't actually can you imagine anything into that rich how good Jeffrey Simmons would have played today oh my gosh we thought he would have set the NFL record for sex yeah no I you know what it does actually make a little more sit like I thought if Kendall would have been the left guard which is what I in fairness thought they were going to do because I've seen a lot of Jeff Stoutland teams over the years where he just wants to he's like I don't want to mess with two spots just just plug one guy in and will figure it out from there Jeff Stoutland's not there anymore so I would say when it comes to the decision it's bad news for two people number one lambda dickerson because I don't think you make this move if lambda dickerson's coming back in five or six weeks like I just I don't think you mess with that because then cam jurgens is going to be your center and I think you try and live with

46:11with Drew Kendall filling the gap at left guard so I don't think they're they're messing around with that like you said and number two it's a little bit of a diss the cam jurgens I would say too right like he's been your center for these few years and that's an important position and whether it's Kendall just being able to identify past protection or whatever but cam jurgens yeah he played right guard I believe the the one year as he was waiting for for Jason Kelsey to to retire and was okay at that position they stick him in at left guard in this game up position he's I don't think he's played it all really with the Eagles and he looked bad and I don't know if that was you know just unable to process the position if it was just like a new setting or that he's hurt or it might have just been a little bit of a bad matchup too with Jeffrey Simmons but cam jurgens was among I think five pretty bad lineman on the day was again their worst lineman and so it's I don't think it's like a sign of confidence for him either too but the negadel fiends out there this is you know yeah I'm sure

47:14you're having some of these thoughts that after two weeks it's fair to question life without Jeff Stoutlin with the Eagles offensive line which we hadn't seen for a very long time it's fair to question things like spending a first round pick on macaillemen and a second round pick on Eli Stowers it's fair to question the previous draft probably where you're spending on non premium because you know you're spending on an off-ball linebacker in the first round and a safety with your second pick and now you're in a situation where you really don't know what you have with your offensive line you brought in the new online coach I mean I don't know how much of this is with is the coaching change the old line we're talking about is going to be so nice to play in this kind of system and it's like it doesn't seem like you're having a great time guys out there if I'm just being honest I've watched you play every game of your career that I see many games where it's felt like you're having a much better time than you're having right now because to your point it wasn't just Kim Jerkens in this game like I will watch the film it doesn't feel like the tackles played well or at least great in this game I know the bar is very high for those guys so maybe it

48:18was just a play here and a play there but when they're showing you those replays and guys are getting beat pretty cleanly and they're having trouble handling stuff like stunts that's concerning and that's going to be a big factor I've said it keeps repeating myself just kind of in this for the ceiling of this football team the offensive line has to be better because the offensive line is because is what's going to dictate the run game and the run games kind of going to dictate the whole scheme about can you marry the run in the past I mean we are I feel like thrilled with how Jalen Hertz has played so far this season based on expectation and statistically you still had two kind of average mediocre offensive games now you've won both games that's all that matters but it's just to put it into context like the quarterbacks playing well the wide receivers are playing well and you're producing a league average offense pretty much through the first two weeks all right well then where do our eyes go our eyes go to the right place and that's the offensive line here it's just weird as an Eagles fan because I don't want to sound ungrateful because it's been two

49:21decades of the gold age of offensive line play for the most part with with Jeff Stoutlin being the figure there but it's just like again unlike I will cop to this I'm not watching every team around the league I can't imagine that this isn't anything but a bottom third offensive line through two weeks like this is bad offensive line play it's not it's not like taking a step back from elite every year under Stoutlin pretty much to average or slightly above average or whatever no this has been bad through through two weeks it's two weeks new system like you said these guys you know they were gassing up Chris Cooper the whole off season they were gassing up oh this would be great we're not going to be on an island as much anymore well they're not playing like right now and you mentioned the the tackles because like yeah Tyler Steen also I thought really struggled I was writing his name named down a lot but the tackles aren't playing well either like Lane Johnson rough couple games for him like I he you mentioned the one drive where they went backwards in the second half

50:22Lane Johnson misses a block and Tyler Steen has to hold the guy because Lane Johnson just whiffs on a run block and then Lane gets another penalty that's you know so that's one side of it and then the Jordan Milada for the second time in two weeks on a like a T East on he gets knocked on his bud because he did just like doesn't know what's going on it's it's weird as somebody is what who's watched those guys and I know everybody listening has watched those guys play wonderful football lane for 13 years Milada for five years it's it's been weird it's unfamiliar yeah it's very unfamiliar to go through the experience of watching them just be anything but very good players here so we'll we'll do a little thing on the offensive line when we do the film review but that that obviously is a concern here all right the game ball here rich now we made the rule last week that Jalen Hertz can only get the game ball four times this season but we both say you know what

52:24you when you understand that I can't be given this to Hertz every single week all right I'm going to do that too I'm with you I think as we get later into this season we'll be probably won't be giving it to the same people every time it it feels weird again I'd like to have that back from last week I would have rather used one on Hertz this week then last week because he'd let a fantastic drive and we've been talking about how well he played however you know the fact that we did give it to him last week I can't be burning two on Hertz when we only have four the entire season so debonte Smith like you said he earned it terrific game from debonte Smith all right rich anything else on the offense before we move on two quick things number one like you mentioned this already nice game for the receivers as much as the the offensive line has been a concern in a way that I don't think we really expected them to be that level of a concern it wasn't just debonte I think they finished with 264 receiving yards and two touchdowns like you got it basically not in the game for most of it

53:27sake one not in the game those are the guys that have to step up and like like you said debonte huge game some huge third down catches from Donnie Candles but the the lesser lights also made plays like there was the one third down throw where Hertz put it behind McIleman really nice hands catch on that one by the rook Darious Cooper caught you know he had a nice explosive play on on a shallow crosser and of course he finishes with the with the final catch as well some interesting Hollywood brown end-or-ounds I guess he asked for it you know he didn't get the point to work though right yeah two for 12 are at six yards per carry nine yards that was tied for their longest run of the game rich so there you go but yeah I would say really for the most part like that those guys stepped up and they made big plays now the the one negative and this is not really just on the receivers it's on the entire offense and Sean Manion as well you got to get rid of those screenplays man like all

57:41per play and the big thing was the explosives since when does a Vic Fangeo defense just willy nilly give up gains of 25 yards left and right this was here's the here's the stat for the defense and why you're so annoyed why I'm annoyed why our audience might be annoyed this was the worst game in terms of giving up explosive plays since Vic Fangeo became the Eagle's defensive coordinator what are we doing what are we doing how does that happen against this offense it was a sixth percent tile game based on explosive play rate so that is the big thing I mean you look at it there's that drive before the half you give a back-to-back place of over 25 yards there in the second half you send a Cooper Dijine blitz on third down they got a guy wide open you get a 25 plus yard completion to Calvin Ridley where it's like wait a minute this isn't a Vic Fangeo zone defenses there's not bitch this much space around a wide open wide receiver this is crazy Calvin Ridley just wide open

58:46on that play the play action e-lick i-o manner a 41 yard completion and then to your point the 27 yard run on third and 22 so I mean how many did I just reel off there one two three four five like five gains of 25 plus yards this team did not have a completion of 20 plus yards in week one against the jets and they're picking up chunk chunk gains against you so yeah I'm not going overboard I'm not telling you it's the worst defense in the NFL but relative to expectation I think it's absolutely fair to say that this has been a disappointing start to the season for the Eagle's defense yeah it's they have all the talent in the world to be very good I think they will be very good I trust the the infrastructure but they're not playing to their potential right now and that was another game where they didn't do that and and you mentioned the play that like I'm sure you could just hear screams all throughout the Delaware Valley on that one and that is third

59:49and 22 Taijay Spears is able to to run around the left side jihad Campbell gets blocked Marcus Epps misses a tackle and it's just you know what it reminded me of shill I think you guys talked about this this week you and zb the the Corey Graham play the sticks defense play in the 2018 game and by the way the I don't know the name of the Titan Stadium because the Eagles don't play there that often but whatever the name of that stadium is a little bit of a house of hers for the Eagles because they were playing that up during the broadcast yeah they don't play there that often but I remember and I actually went back and looked today because I was like man I don't really remember the Eagles winning there and it's been a long time 2002 really good Eagles team lost the opener there 2010 really good Eagles team got their butts kicked there and then 2018 the the Corey Graham play which by the way I rewatched again the the sticks defense that was a tough look for Tory Corey Graham I don't know what he was doing he let the guy run right by him he's doing

1:00:54nothing else on the play but that play reminded me of it and I thought once they got that play it's like oh okay that's what we're going to be leading the show with tonight just another sort of disastrous play I don't know why it happens in Tennessee but it seems to to the Eagles but they end up getting their first I would say real red zone stop of the year because they did get one on the on the field goal earlier but I didn't really count that one because they were barely in the red zone and they ran out of time and Jalen Carter finally finally Jalen Carter steps up and he basically ends the drive which puts Jalen Hertz in position to have that great drive that we just talked about no doubt that was a that was a big play from Jalen Carter there with the sack I think was first in goal at the time sets them back and then they're like they did this multiple times so let's just play for the field goal now you know they're like all right we got sacked we got the sack on first down we're not even going to try anymore let's just go ahead and kick the field goal they did that then and then by the way they did that at the end of the first half

1:01:56this we'd be ripping Cereani for for sure so it's good context third and 14 there already in field goal range and they run the ball and kick a field goal they didn't even take a chance to try to score a touchdown there because they were so afraid something bad was going to happen so that happened two different times you think they would like those you know that play back given what they know about how the game ended and they settled for three when they could have had seven so yeah they kind of helped you out there in a couple spots in terms of individual performances it's always hard to say live you know I thought Epps it felt like had a rough game here yeah Zach Bond certainly missed a couple tackles he was unbelievable in week one he certainly missed a couple tackles in this game you mentioned it that 27 yard run I think Ojo Mo missed a tackle in the hole also and then Epps has just taken a bad angle and Quenya Mitchell is getting blocked by the tight end so when you have those explosive plays a lot of time it's like a lot of times there's multiple people who are at fault you know who's at fault at the line of scrimmage who's at the second level who's supposed to be

1:02:58the third line of defense but man you can't be given up a 27 yard run on third in 22 and breeze made a good point that like just by formation if they were going to run the ball he's like you could kind of tell where they were going to run the ball on that play so that was not a good look for the Eagle's defense there so they end the game two sacks three quarter back hits Carter was playing with the injury that he suffered last week you mentioned the sack with 237 left he has the big sack there which like you said end up being a high high impact play because they just run the ball twice after that but would like to see more from the Seagal's defense for sure you got a game ball for me on defense or anything else on the defense I feel like we're giving them kind of you know we spoke about the offense for a long time but the defense sometimes it takes a rewatch to go over so sometimes you got to go over your initial impressions and then revisit them during the week I think there are two things and I completely agree with you because yeah it didn't feel good but I can't

1:04:00really point at at specific guys that were screwing up I think two things that I would be curious when you guys rewatch it and look at it number one it just feels like the the interior people are able to to run like the success rates pretty high on those like it just feels soft in the middle I don't know if that Jordan Davis not playing up to his potential there was one big play that they hit where it was Ojo Moe and Carter in there I don't know what's going on I know the Eagles they always play with those light boxes so they are sort of daring you to run the ball but it really does feel like from a pure success rate standpoint I wonder if the numbers bear this out just the other team is more consistent running the ball on the the other team is running the ball pretty consistently against the Eagles and the Eagles aren't running the ball consistently against the other team that just it's a hard way to live and obviously the best Eagles teams have been the exact opposite as far as a a game ball I'm going to give it the req woolen you know it really again just somebody who stood out on on first watch he had a couple of really nice plays against carnell tape on third
