That's it. It's okay. It's true, this is anything here. Welcome to the Ringer Philly special shield. Kapadia here with Zach Berman of the athletic. Here we go. It's week two. It's the weekly routine of an NFL season before you know it will be week six and then week nine and then playoffs and all that. But right now it's week two. We got on ZB to talk a little Eagles Titans to talk about a very Newsy week down at the practice facility with Landon Dickerson and an offensive line shake up will get ZB's thoughts on what he saw in week one from the Eagles will make predictions for this game.

2:09And then of course the mail back we will have in the second half of the show by the way one little bonus segment at the end. The bundle came in. He's like, I got to talk. I got to get some Philly's thoughts off my chest. I'm like, all right, let's do it. So I don't know how long this podcast is going to be, but we're going to get you a lot of stuff here. All right, ZB, how are we doing my friend? Don't create excited for the show. Look forward to talking to you guys and you're right busy week down at the Eagles facility. Let's get to it. I mean, we don't need to go. We'll exchange pleasantries with the mail back and everything else here. ZB, but a New Z week here. So start us off with the ZB three. I imagine we're going to be talking a little offensive line here to start the show. Yes, the first one is the biggest news of the week that's landed Dickerson goes on injured reserve. They make the decision on Monday after that performance on Sunday, the way it was described from from landing on WIP from Nick Seriani is that he went in for imaging after the game.

3:19And that's when it was determined that there was a bone bruise in the knee that required time on IR that he got rolled up on a few weeks ago, but it wasn't the type of thing that they thought it was an injury or an injury of note. He wasn't on the injury report last week and the imaging occurred after the game. So he goes and I are and the Eagles are being very close to the vestier of foul. How this offensive line is going to look presumably it's going to be your Kendall. I know they look really like Willie Lampkin. We Lampkin had a good summer as well. They keep throwing out Fred Johnson and Mike Morris. I'm presumably it's going to be your Kendall. I think the cleanest swap is Drew Kendall for landed Dickerson left guard for left guard. You hear whispers that there could be moves a more than one spot that it could be Kendall at center and maybe moving Jürgen's over to guard. I asked Nick Seriani yesterday where Kendall's the best fit center of guard in Sierra on is like, that's a tricky question.

4:24You know, we we like my post spots. Drew Kendall wouldn't say where he was practicing this week. Then Sean Manion said really they have flexibility to figure out who their best five are going to be. So the Eagles are not trying to put an end to this idea that there could be more than one spot being moved. Now, Jalen Hertz says I've been taking snaps from Cam Jürgen's. Cam Jürgen's is taking a day off. I take snaps from Drew Kendall, but Cam is going to take snaps from. I would think it's going to be a one for one swap. That was always Jeff Stoutland's M.O. Of course, Jeff Stoutland is not here. So we'll see how this alignment looks. If they move Kendall, who has more experience in the past few years at center and he doesn't guard when his FBC, he played center. And I did hear going back to the combine in the spring that there was a lot of optimism in the building about your Kendall and that maybe the best look would be to have him at at center.

5:27But I am operating as if he's going to be the left guard this week. All right. Tell the people who drew Kendall list. The people who are not in kind of the bubble. And I know we have sickos and die hearts listing to this. But this is not a guy that has been a part of the lives of Eagles fans. And now all of a sudden, he becomes a very important player where he, you know, your guess here is that he just gets the start at left guard for the foreseeable future. Because with with landed Dickerson, we don't know, right? ZB is just kind of uncertain how long he's going to be out. Does he return at some point this season? Is it a season long thing? Is it a four week long thing? Is it somewhere in between all those possibilities are on the table? But it's also possible that Drew Kendall, as long as he's healthy, is just starting every game the rest of the season. Yeah, you're absolutely right. Now there is optimism, I think from Dickerson that he could return. But again, with this type of injury, with his injury history, you need to see. So Drew Kendall was the Eagles fifth round pick last season, 2025.

6:30Comes from Boston College. If the name sounds familiar, his father is Pete Kendall, a former, I believe, Pro Bowl guard in the NFL. He played for the Jets. He played for the C-Ox. So there's the bloodlines there. Now I'm sorry, he was not a pro bowler, but he was a long time starter, started a 180 eight game, Pete Kendall. Drew Kendall was deep down the depth chart last year. And he came on this summer, had a really good summer. If you recall the second preseason game against New England, him and Lampkin, or a good combination there in the middle, how he roseman said going into camp that if he gave him truth serum, which is an exercise that I've probably thought way too much about over the past 15 years. If you gave him truth serum, his biggest question would be the interior offensive line depth. And he left camp feeling good about that group. And that's because of the way Kendall and Lampkin played.

7:30So I can tell you that in the, that's, that's not just and how he said that, by the way, before Kendall entered the lineup. This is not something that was thrown out this this week. So internally there has been a lot of optimism in Drew Kendall's development. He, I asked him where he seemed the most growth from last year to this year. He said, he changes his body this off season. He's he added more size. He's more athletic now than he was a year ago. Like he really saw what it would, it would take to work out in the NFL. He spent a lot of time at guard, you know, cross training under Stoutland last year with, you know, with Chris Cooper this year. So that's, that's who, who Drew Kendall is. He's not some guy off the street. Now he was a fifth round pick, but he was well regarded in that track. Art of fifth round pay, you know, ZB our friend, EJ. He's got a lot, he's got a lot riding on the table for Drew. I feel like if Drew Kendall doesn't make the hall of fame. That's going to be tough for EJ. I feel like you know, I got EJ's been talking about him for a long time. Drew Kendall this Drew Kendall that so this is a very interesting plot twist in terms of, you know, people doing EGLE's content in this city with Drew Kendall getting in the lineup here.

8:43We love EJ. We're joking around, but not not really. I mean, you do love a Drew Kendall, right ZB? Does he just like when you see him at practice is EJ, just you know, like EJ has a colony's like Drew Kendall is amazing. Not not quite. EJ is doing an awesome job. It's covering the team incredibly. He's doing great job on the shows and he knows ball too. So when he went when he's talking up Drew Kendall, I'm buying it. All right, there you go. Drew. All right. So you've the most likely scenario. You're on the record here. Drew Kendall replaces Landon Dickerson. The rest of the offensive looks the same as they did the rest of the offensive line looks the same as they take the field Sunday at one o'clock. Give me your number two option. If there's like a surprise one where you say, oh, I didn't think this was going to be it, but it could be it. What's the other five man lineup that you would have kind of number two on your list as a possibility. Yeah, that would be Drew Kendall at center. Cam Jorgens at left guard. And, you know, I do think it's going to be the ones for one swap, but I have heard, like I said, even before this injury, it'd be real interesting if with Drew Kendall's the center and can get the same.

9:50Kendall's the center and can Kim Jurgens plays at guard. I heard that going back to the, yeah, to the combine the spring period. And you saw Jeff McLean who broke the news this this week, say the Eagles are contemplating this. And I understand the Eagles have this fascination with competitive advantage. And I get why like I'm not dismissing it, you know, but if you weren't considering moving your pro bowl center over. Then you would say that's ridiculous. Like, Cam Jurgens is our center. And maybe that's why Jalen Hertz kind of operated that way. But but the Eagles are like, we don't, you know, we're keeping everything close to the vest. We want to put the best five out there. And, you know, I'm not saying where Drew Kendall's the best fit. So I think the backup option would be or the other I wouldn't even say the backup because I talk to people who know their stuff, other reporters who are who are saying, I think it could be kind of it could be Kendall at center.

10:51So I guess I'm putting stock into what Jalen Hertz said yesterday, I don't think Jalen Hertz is like trying to do the gamesmanship as much as everyone else's. But the I think a legitimate other option alternative would be Drew Kendall at center and Cam Jurgens at guard. Well, it's what it feels like they have to make this decision based on kind of the rest of the season. Like I know they would never come out and say we don't think landed Dickerson's going to be back. But when you make the decision, you're almost operating under the assumption. It feels like to me at least that like let's just let's just make the decision based on the idea that we don't know Flan and Dickerson's going to play another snap for us this season. So if that's the case, then you might look at it and say, all right, for the next 17 weeks plus the playoffs, what's the best combination we could possibly have you mentioned with Sean Manion, the best five out there. And maybe they think, all right, Drew Kendall at center and Jurgens at left guard is just a better combination than Cam Jurgens at center and Drew Kendall at left guard.

11:52I'm not saying that's like definitively what's going to happen. But that it feels like to me as someone just observing this from the outside. That could just be the math. They're trying to figure out here. Well, I'm asking you here because you're you've said a few times here that they should operate as if landed Dickerson won't be back this year. Are you viewing the IR Stin as like a soft benching that the performance was so discouraging week one. And you don't know if landed Dickerson's going to be right again because in a vacuum, this injury isn't one that you would say is a season ending injury and based on landed Dickerson's comments. I was there at chickies and pizza on Monday night. He was talking about doing this now so he can be good for the back stretch of the schedule. Now players always have optimism when an injury occurs, but it's it's not like this is a torn ACL. So it kind of sounds like you view this almost as a soft benching. Now, I wouldn't say that. I just think there's as much uncertainty with his future as almost any player you would see given the injuries in college, given the fact that he went to Columbia for the stem cell stuff in the off season, given the fact that there were reports that he was considering retirement in the off season, given the fact that they read did his contract.

13:07Now that could lead to conclusions that maybe this is just going to be his last year playing in the NFL, given the reporting from you guys all training camp that was like he doesn't you know necessarily look great physically. That wasn't just in the in the last week. I don't think that was for you know just consuming the coverage. It was like he came jerk and definitely looks better. Lane and Dickerson doesn't necessarily look better and then the fact that he plays one game and it's the worst game he's ever you know probably of his career and that after that game. He's going on I are so I'm just adding all those things up. It would be a great story if he came back and he felt good if he felt healthy and he played well down the stretch and whenever he wants to call it quits, he goes out on his own terms, but I'm putting myself in the mind of how he roseman or somebody else in that building with like all right. How do we want to kind of navigate this this first little you know issue we've had for the 2026 season what's our mindset for what would work fast now it could be short term and long term that they're like hey Drew Kendall it center and came jerk is a left guard that's you know even if it's only for four weeks that's a better situation or like you said it could it could not be and it could go the other way.

14:19I'm just trying to read to you leaves and figure out if I was in that building not necessarily thinking about a self-bension although obviously if Dickerson was just playing like three weeks like he played in week one that's kind of an untenable situation where you would just figure like I are not you're probably going to make a move there I think. Yeah but like you you don't usually go from. Not being on the interreport not getting injured in the game to okay not you're on I are not in I understand that I'm not strange and the imaging and all that yeah I don't really understand that aspect of it I kind of take a look after the game but it does seem. You are right like like there is a pretty clear sign from them here that hey you need to take a step back and landed did say back during the first time he spoke this off season was the first weekend camp and he said he can play through injury like he's I I asked him if he's going to rethink his approach and he said yeah he's not going to do that again.

15:22And it is it's this isn't exclusive to the Eagles but you hear a lot with Eagles your your colleague Brian Curtis calls it like the now you tell me story right and how many times it's like well you don't know what this guy was was dealing with last year this came up recently with Zach Bond who actually didn't have a bad year last year had a good year but when I was talking to one of the assistant coaches during the summer it was like man bond was playing through a lot that you guys don't realize last year. And yeah he has a big fan geo performance he's like well he didn't practice in training camp last year right and so he was clearly playing through something so I bring this up as as a way of saying that guys don't get healthier during the season like the only way to get healthier typically is this take a step back and take some time off. Yeah that's right all right that's the old line situation what's number two on the ZB three. Number two is is something that I've harped on more than some other reporters and I think it's worthwhile talking about with with with us which is the target distribution in week one it really stood out to me it was read more evenly than it's then it's been spread in recent years.

16:34Four different pass catchers were targeted between four and six times in this game now you you might have seen me write this I don't hold it against you if if you haven't how many times in the past two years in a game that AJ brown played do you think four players received at least four targets. In the last four years you said in the last two years last two years game AJ brown played four players had at least four three. One one okay one and johan dotson the eagles third receiver never received four targets in a game that AJ brown played and so and interestingly the goals in the games AJ didn't play the ball was spread out more. So this is this is why this this this kind of peak my interest because is this a sign of the post AJ world that they're in that you're not force feeding one person the ball. I asked Nick's your ionny this I asked Sean man in this and they're like look it's it's it's early it's going to change week the week time kind of things sometimes you feed a high hand.

17:46Sean man you talked about how you go into a game aware of the target distribution but then you you kind of have to adjust as you see cover tears and whatnot I post this the jail in hurts yesterday. And jalen hurts didn't frame it as like a sample size thing he said this is a function of the offense like this is this is how the offense is supposed to look. Now I don't think this is the best course of action per se because I think they need to get the Von Te smith more touches I think the Von Te should be getting eight plus touches a game if you want him to finish the year in that 100 to 40 to 160 range. But they clearly were looking for ways to get. McCoy lemon the ball done tapion wicks and the Von Te said after the game there's a lot of clouds covered on him and now he told he told a wicks when that happens the ball is going to go to you. But this is very much on my radar for the reasons that I I mentioned in terms of AJ not being here and maybe jalen felt the ball need to be force fed.

18:48In the pain in recent years and obviously because this is a new offense and that packers offense was always like a by committee approach in terms of target distribution. Yeah, I think that they would. My opinion would be they would love a game or Devonte smith gets eight nine 10 targets and has a hundred and I mean you all you you've always made the point that how can you tell a good offensive coordinator from the bad offensive coordinator you're not asking the question of. Is the best player getting the ball right that's a zb theory I was giving you love I talked to I was on Nate Tyson's podcast flex and I give you I give you a shout out because that that is that is it when you said that i'm like that's absolutely right and now every time i'm looking at a team i'm like. I look at all right is this an issue is this something their beat writers are writing about why isn't player X getting the ball and then I look at the coordinator i'm like all right that's probably a you issue more than anything else every great wide receiver is getting specific. Coverage is to take them away it's not supposed to be that easy if it were that easy then Jamar chase would never get the ball Justin Jefferson would never get the ball and so I think you have to as a staff.

19:55Figure out ways to get Devonte smith the football more now this was one game it was six targets it's i'm not it's not a big deal after one game if we're a month in and we're having this conversation then i'm going to be like that's not you know that that's not a great situation there so. I think obviously they're going to spread the ball out more than last year because you don't have a j brown on the football team and they were the most. Funnalled target team in the NFL because they had Devonte smith and they had a j brown and even a third guy in Dallas got her they're not that team anymore they have Devonte smith. And a bunch of guys who you're open on any given week someone's going to make a play and so I do think it's going to look different but i would expect at some point Devonte smith is certainly. Going to get more looks get more targets you it's tough because even the you know the dot tv and wicks long. Played on the sideline we talked about this was Sean it's like that wasn't a play that was drawn up for Dante don't take the wicks you know that the ball found him. Did you heard to side it to make an aggressive decision but it's not like they went into the game plan or even into that play call being like alright let's get wicks open.

21:00Deep here so some of it is randomness some of it's a small sample you know you had 14 receptions 22 targets in that game let's see what it looks like this year i'm this week here. Against the Titans alright see be what's the third. ZB4 we got I just want to add something else yeah go ahead yeah I just want to add to it because you you put it really well in Devonte in that same quote that I mentioned with the cloud coverage said. But the coaches I feel they'll draw up something real good to help me out a little bit so that that that speaks to exactly what you just said. And so I thought that was worth pointing out alright what's what's number three what do we got number three is that it's going to be. Record heat in Nashville Tennessee oh I didn't realize that really this weekend on the field. It the real field temperatures expected to be 105 degrees. Who the the listed temperature is 95 and above. So this is the Eagles it sounds like are flying down there a day early to acclimate to the heat really yeah that's interesting.

22:09They did this against Tampa Bay last year so this was kind of the yeah i'll confirm this today but this was just kind of the word from talking to a few different people yesterday that. That they're going to go that they're going to go down there a day early but they did do that with Tampa last year and they did it in response to. They had struggled down in Tampa in some of those real hot games in in in September and the heat was like an issue cited if you remember the game two years ago. I remember guys were getting IVs it was it was the it was a big deal so I don't know enough from the sports science perspective if getting their early acclimates you to it I would think staying out of the heat would it would would be the best thing for it but it does sound like they're going to grow it now perhaps. What's early early when when would they normally go down when would early pay. Early would be Friday they would typically go down after their walk through Saturday so if you do this you you would have your walk through. In Nashville on Saturday not perhaps they want next your night in Nashville maybe there some people on that staff who want to see Jared Curtis is first start for Vanderbilt on Saturday against NC State see Jay Bailey and so.

23:24They're they're they're talking about adjusting the the travel schedule in that regard because I can tell you one of the three of us really wants to try to get to that Vanderbilt game and when you booked the flight in real as well time the Vanderbilt game was going to be and has been monitoring American Airlines is what is. Yeah their website because I was wrong with you I told my wife I want to see Jared Curtis play in person I want to see see Jay Bailey play in person. We'll see how that goes right now Eagles fans have booked every seat on every flight to Nashville but it's going to be a hot weekend so I bring this up as a way of saying I don't know if it's going to be an equalizer clearly Eagles are the more talented team but when Eagles fans are watching this game I can assure you that on that broadcast the heat is going to be a major topic because it is a record temperature and it's just a luck of the draw that you're in Nashville on September what 20th. As opposed to the game could be in November December but CB did they not just have an entire training camp in Philadelphia with days that had temperatures around that that high.

24:28Like they're not they're not practicing in Antarctica or something good point good point. All right like what's that actually going to do they're not they're not going to have a full practice outside well that's what I wonder too is like is the benefit to it now they did think there was a benefit in doing that in Tampa Bay last year. I can't tell you I don't know if it's mental I don't know if there's a physical part of this it's it's going to be a work through and then they're going to be in air condition the rest of the day correct yes yes I mean they're going to be in Nashville longer than the Rams were in there will be a Nashville in the Rams were in Melbourne so think about that like the mental thing I don't know yeah maybe there is a sports I have not poo pooing it maybe there's a sports science reasoning for it but it does seem a little strange there on the surface we what did you explain when they did it in Tampa did they play better. They did they won their first game in Tampa in a while last year or they they had not know how that's trouble in Tampa but then they they went down there last year and they and they when they won that game and that was and that was a big deal to them.

25:34Yes the pickle juice get that pickle juice ready there in Nashville get it on the plane get it wherever you can down there in Nashville all right let's take a break oh sorry last time the goals were in Nashville you were on the beat did you do that trip or did bow do that trip it was 2018 2018 I did that trip. Alchon Jeffrey's first game back that that year I believe okay what happened in that game they lost an overtime they it was like one of the only times that they that the sticks defense James sports ran didn't work I think Corey Graham might have gotten beat yeah okay hold on let me I'm going to Google it ZB shield Kapadia the athletic Eagles Titans the day after let's see if I wrote anything here would this have been 10 1 2018 okay areas of concern rise to surface in Eagles loss to the Titans I started out with a little Lane Johnson

26:39anecdote where he said if ifs and buts where candies and nuts we'd all have a Merry Christmas that's my first quote there wow thank you that that guy can write I was just on there reporting they lose an overtime 26 23 7 36 left in the third quarter Alchon Jeffrey makes a brilliant leaping grab they go up 17 3 and after that why was ripping the coaches a little bit there too let's not excuse the coaches I said they go two and two after the first four weeks of the season Zach Hertz was saying some of the issues they had they should have been fixed weeks ago He didn't want to be in this spot. I got that there Carson Wentz 50 passing attempts CB 33 for 50 for 348 yards and a pair of touchdowns offense 400 man if the if this if the offense this year is 432 yards and 25 first downs everybody's going to be feeling

27:43great there but penalties drop passes one for four in the red zone five for 15 on third down Harold Landry gets past Lane Johnson wow rare rare but Lane Johnson accountable for it afterward says he wishes he could have it back Carson Wentz gets hit a lot wow what a trip down memory lane I don't know I remember almost nothing from that is a little scary CP that I have hundreds of thousands of words on the internet that I've written and I don't remember any of that That is a little scary because I can tell you so much about that game I remember the following week and and you bring up those offensive stats maybe Mike grow wasn't as bad as You know as fans might remember but I do remember the press conference that week Mike Said something along the lines and I'm kind of butchering it here Mike's listening but but uh Hey, we did our job like like they like in overtime, you know they they um they kicked a field goal and overtime

28:44Like they got the ball first I kicked a field goal then Titans went down and scored a touchdown I believe so I don't think he said we did our job I think he said something to the long good along lines. I like you know we scored points and overtime and and but they obviously didn't score the touchdown Marcus mario to 30 for 43 for 340 for 44 yards Corey Davis nine grabs were a hundred and sixty one yard so There you go All right, I was ripping Peterson for something he did at the end of the first half I was wondering what's up with Nelson Agilor Eagles allow four explosive plays to a Titans offense that had had four explosive plays the fewest in the NFL Coming into that season Alshan Jeffrey with a nice game Malcolm Jenkins with a nice game there so There you go. Let's get into this Titans matchup zb Let me give you some of my thoughts here before we talk about What we're going to be discussing if they win and if they lose so this Titans team offseason they hire Robert Salah And he gets Brian dayball as his Oc zb. What was your understanding of the Eagles interest in Brian day ball in the offseason? I do think there was interest my understanding is is that there that there was initial interest from the Eagle side I think Mike McDaniel was was more of a target but I think that ultimately

31:53I think the situation in Nashville was was more appealing. I can't speak for Brian dayball But first off, you're going in with a first-year coach Your I don't think the expectations were what they were in Philly in that you know You have to be better than 11 wins and playoff, you know and making the playoffs right at the the expectations are huge and Philly So I would think that Or um the Eagles job is is the better job, but in Nashville, you know You're working with a young quarterback and so that's that's my sense of it I can't speak for Brian dayball Brian daybell's last three seasons in the NFL Let me just give people a run down here 2023 Giants go 6 and 11 offense ranks 29th in EPA per drive 2024 Giants go 3 and 14 offense ranks 29th in EPA per drive 2025 Giants go 2 and 8 to start the season

They signed some veterans on defense at at quarterback Alante Taylor Cordale flat they traded for a guy that Robert Salah had coached before In germane Johnson they signed a guy that Robert Salah had coached before in John Franklin Myers from the Broncos So really this season is all about like all right Can you get something at it you want to be feeling good about cam ward At the end of this season CB because his rookie season was a disaster now it was a terrible situation Brian Calahann might have been the worst coach in the NFL in like the last 25 years

36:00I mean that team was a complete disaster Still if you look at it statistically Bureau of the quarterbacks who had a worse rookie season than cam ward by EPA for pass play in like the last I can't remember if this is the last 10 years or 20 years just in fields DeShawn Kaiser Zach Wilson CJ Bethard Bryce Young and Josh Rosen not not a single one in there who got a second contract from their current team Although maybe Bryce Young will get a second contract From the Carolina Panthers. So you have that you had the fact that Robert Salah did play Jalen Hertz And in this Eagles offense in the playoffs last year He was the defensive coordinator of the 49ers 49ers defense got the better of the Eagles offense in that game You have that data point and then you have Brian Dable. Yeah, I was just ripping in but to him I'll give this little piece of credit Week six last year Against the Eagles defense CB Giants took it to the Eagles that that was actually the best single performance

37:01Against the Vic Fangeo Eagles defense since he became the defensive coordinator remember that game I mean it was physical Thursday night. Thursday night. They were going up and down the field 25 first downs 366 yards they ran for a hundred and 72 yards So that was kind of the highlight of the last three years for for Brian Dable was actually playing Fangeo And this Eagles defense. So that's my Breakdown CB. What do you think what are we talking about if the Eagles win this game or any other thoughts you have on this matchup? Yeah, I think that If the Eagles win this game were we're talking about Like clearly they were the better team because there is that decided advantage But I think specifically what we're talking about is probably the defense because I don't anticipate the Giants moving the ball on The Eagles the way they did last year although I'm sorry the Titans moving the way that Giants did in that Thursday night game last year Although Jalen Carter didn't play in that Thursday night game

38:02I think the Eagles were missing his toughness in that game Jalen Carter is a wrist injury right now did not practice on Wednesday We'll see how that progresses this this week. This is before the Thursday practice in injury report Just so the audience does yeah Cooper says he's he's he's going to play. I I would be a little more concerned in this game. Well, I guess I'll get that in the Eagles losing thing I think if if the Eagles win where we're talking about this defense And we're talking about them Because the the game that's coming up after this is the Chicago Bears and An offense that looked outstanding in week one and so if the Bears look really good in week two You're talking about this this this this Fangeo defense Maybe one of the best defenses in the NFL and I thought they played better in week one that the numbers indicated I don't think the day they they did well on on those last two scoring drives But I think overall you know that they they were holding their own even more so than holding their own against Washington

Um, I thought it was interesting phangeo challenging the past rush to your point Through the media this week. Maybe let a little fire Under that past rush and I'm sure he remembers what Brian Dable and that giant's team did did the Eagles last year And you know phangeo seems like a guy who'd want to get a little revenge there maybe On a guy who made him look bad for one night last year So I do think we're talking about the defense and a really strong performance if they win and that I mean that titans offense I think looks like a bottom five unit to me for the season So this should be a game where to your point Eagles just have a big talent advantage

44:19They're in they're in second down passing situations and this whole thing supposed to be in like neutral situations And so they they got to be more productive on first downs in this game So that game again in the playoffs last year eagles offense 35th percent out game nothing explosive down field Jalen hurts average 4.8 yards per attempt no completions longer than 20 yards was only sacked once They did run the ball well pretty well in that game say quan had 26 For 106. I was just looking at kind of what solid used in that game It was really a mix of everything mix a man in zone mix of you know single high zone plus quarters coverage two deep zone Blitzed about 30% of the time and now that I'm looking I forgot about that jets game that was 2023 It's actually the advanced stats on hurts in that game or I almost identical to what we saw In that Niners game and you know eagles lost that game 20 to 14 and they lose the playoff game 23 to 19

45:21So the two games there against solid they have not scored 20 points In either game now this is You know what I you know shouldn't even because the 49ers defense last Playoff's was not talented. They were trying to out about their back up there Yeah, I would say this Titans defense is more talented than that 49ers defense But not as as talented as the 2023 Jets defense there so the I mean the Jets last week had a good game a good Above average offensive game Against this Titans defense. So you would want to see this offense playing well I think of the eagles lose We're saying the offensive line is an issue, you know all right Hey, but it was hyping up Drew Kendall, but it's not just Drew. It wasn't just that one spot It's it's just this group as a collective Doesn't look good here. They're not running the ball effectively. There's too many plays where jalen hurts Excuse me. We're jalen hurts is trying to bail them out And I think that's probably what we're talking about here again

46:22We don't have too many data points early in the season But if you come out of this and you're like the lose and the Jets offense looked good against them in week one And the eagles offense look bad against them in week two. 47:24They are going to have to make some changes here in the next year and two years on that offensive line I'm looking at their schedule here CB so after this game It's brutal at Chicago Home against the Rams Home against the Jaguars now London against the Jaguars. Lots. Sorry London Against the Jaguars. Yeah, so that's that's three Tough games there like you mentioned bears looked really good in week one. We'll see what they look like in another defense I think could stink but Offensively they're gonna present challenges. They are well coached the Rams obviously had a disappointing week one Let's see what they do Monday night Against the Giants and the Jaguars had a very impressive week one showing at home against the Browns They've got a big game this weekend at Denver but on paper those are certainly three formidable opponents So you want to leave this game against the Titans two and oh And go go go into those games and be feeling good about yourself

I like it. I like it. I think the Eagles will go down to Tennessee. I watch the uh I watch the replay of the of the Jets Titans game last week. I was at the game and the till game in the park I saw I couldn't catch alive, but yeah, I mean the Titans just look absolutely awful on offense Time of obsession went to the Jets. They damn there had to ball two thirds of the game Breeze Hall went crazy. I feel like that's the blueprint to win is just kind of give say quantum ball And hopefully he can go wild against Against that Titans defense there and you know sprinkling a couple big plays with the with the passing game Some crossers stuff like that would Devon take Smith and with uh T. This is this is generally a feeling of malaise around this team That I think has caused people to get like way out of control doomsday and the Phillies right now I ran number this morning. I think fan graphs had them at 98% and I'm around 97 To make the playoffs. So this is a you know the magic numbers down to six I want to be able to separate the Things that don't matter like whether or not they win a series against the nationals or whether or not they get hit with the runners Against the nationals on the mats this weekend Versus the things that actually do matter which we can get into with Hazus, Lazardo in the current situation of the lack of Bolpin pictures that you trust In terms of trying to parse out where this team sits going in October

1:40:41Okay, well, let's just let's just tell update people where they are in the standings here. So they are Second in the wild card half a game behind the Chicago Cubs as we record this so if the playoffs started today They would go to Riggley as you told us which would be you know Eagles bears on a Monday night and then Phillies at Riggley that wake of course, you know, there's still 10 games left so they could leap the Cubs They could be hosting that series For sure now right behind them that's interesting because the San Diego Padres have won 9 of 10 and are one game behind the Phillies So there is a possibility that the Padres Jumped the Phillies here in the last 10 games and funds correct me if I'm wrong But if the Phillies dropped to that last wild card spot now you're going to Atlanta in the in the wild card round correct Okay, so that's that now in in order for them to drop out of the playoffs completely I mean the diamondbacks are four and a half games behind them With 10 to play with 10 to play so that would be I'm not saying it can't happen

1:41:45Like you said that is highly highly unlikely that the Phillies drop out of the playoffs and We're saying that the snakes close with the Padres So any huge snakes run that happens Comes at the expense of Padres who are already behind them and probably not going to catch them So it would take the Phillies going like two and eight one and nine in the final 10 which like you know it could technically happen right people have have kind of Doom themselves into thinking that a team that is going to win around 90 games and has been roughly the same regular season team for five years It's just going to go on one of their worst stretches ever in the last two weeks. That's possible Everything is possible But it's not realistic. I have run some numbers on the likelihood They get each seed okay in the playoffs. So three seed which means they win the division is about 0.7% So never say never But it's about as likely that I'm missing the Missing the playoffs altogether This is where it gets really interesting. So the four seed around 24%

1:42:49The three seed 50 sorry the five seed 53% and then the six seed 20% so there is a non zero chance Right that they fall out of that Top five fall to six and their current most likely playoff matchup It's about 70% that they play the Cubs 20% they play the Braves And then the Padres and Debacks are also in that mix there So almost certainly now we're heading toward a world where it's going to be the Cubs and the question is About Most of the time the Phillies go to Riggly and the other segment of the time the Cubs come to Philly now I do think that matters quite a bit but That's where they stand with 10 games to go. Why does that matter give me the rundown of like what what we should be rooting for because you've long been a Braves Non-believer so like you said they're still over 20 you know 20% chance is not nothing that they would Would face the Atlanta Braves if they fall to that six seed so give me like how strongly do you feel their chances of getting out of that round are altered based on the

1:43:54The three main scenarios going to Atlanta going to Chicago hosting the Cubs Yeah, I think home series still gives you the chance. I know that The aura of October and citizens Bank Park has kind of been punctured But it is still an advantage to play games at home. I don't want to pretend that this is not an advantage because the Phillies have struggled in home games the last couple of post seasons but I Think the matchup is really interesting right there's a ton of familiarity between the Phillies and the Braves The question is when you face Atlanta Your facing Chris sale in game one A picture that has kind of owned the Phillies for the most part Picture the Phillies have seen a ton of and then there's a drop off for Atlanta into pictures two and three But if you down one zero the odds of you winning that series Historically, there's been 16 wild card series since the new format began four years ago Only one team has lost game one and then come back to win the series in three Out of 16 so it has not been a good track record for those teams

1:44:57So you're like, okay, do you want to face the one a ace in game one Backed up by a worse offense Or do you want to face the cubs who are the best offense in the baseball have the best player in baseball this year but They're almost dead last in like all the pitching metrics their bullpen is taking on water They have three okay not great starters Gowsman and Minaga boy like none of those guys are striking fear into the hearts of a an opposing lineup So do you want to face the better hitting team like the cubs who don't have an ace Or do you want to face the better pitching team who has a one a bona fide ace in Atlanta But albeit again a team the Phillies have had success and will probably feel confident Playing against and I watched all seven Just about of those Phillies Braves games the last two weeks and at no point that I would feel like oh I like the Braves are so much better of a baseball team than the Phillies again They won four out of seven the Phillies bullpen who a couple games But you didn't feel that serious that they were overmatched at any point

1:45:59All right, so you would rank it Whole against the clubs at Chicago at Atlanta. It sounds like okay. All right, so and if your goal is to avoid the Dodgers In a five game series And just hope that somebody else takes them out and you don't want to play them Staying in the four five is the way to do that because the Dodgers are gonna be the two seed. They're gonna play the winner of three six So I don't know how strongly I feel about that you bet you've been just you all Tell them everybody settle down on the Dodgers they're there. So yeah, I don't know, you know This Brewer's team is is pretty impressive So I know the playoff stuff, but I don't feel that strongly about it that like your chances are way better If you face that now the odds would say otherwise the Dodgers are plus 220 here to win the world series and the Brewer's are Plus 600 but listen, I don't I don't want can't tell you I follow all these teams very closely as you know That's why we have Bunzion here, but yeah, that's kind of the least of my concerns puns. Let's just get out of that first round

1:47:01I got to worry about the first round. Yeah, and then what I may or may not by the way have booked In a refundable plane ticket to Chicago Oh, yeah last night I was talking to a friend buddy who works in Chicago media. I was like, hey, you know the standing's recently He's like yeah, you coming out. I said If you if you haven't me, I'm there and so I booked a plane ticket. It's refundable But I think if it's greater than 50% chance the fillies are at rigley in two weeks Might as well do it now that would be a fun experience I mean found a week too just in general. I mean Eagles bear as well Yeah, I have a few friends going to that game and I'm like, I should stay another day come to the come to the playoff game Yeah All right the fillies at fillies at rigley most likely. Okay. What is the stuff that matters? So let's weed out all the now if you want to address some of the Arguments or concerns that you hear and if you want to debunk them that's fine But I you know, what is the stuff that matters? I think we have to start with Hey, Susie, Lasardo Bones this sort of felt like I did this come out of nowhere or is it or is it me?

1:48:04It was just like this guy's on a tear. He looks like their best pitcher He's having a phenomenal season and then all of a sudden on the group chat Lasardo going on the injured list. I'm like, what what did he get? Did is this like what's his name? Kelly Ubrei on the bike or something like what in the world happened here So where are we without where Hayes used to Lasardo panic given that there is some uncertainty about whether we're going to see him Throw a pitch again this year Yeah, I don't know I get maybe some of it was because it got buried by the start of football and we were also inundated by it So Saturday he didn't pitch right and so it was kind of a double whammy Where Friday night The Phillies have that brutal loss they lose in oil 11 or 12 innings whatever it was To Atlanta where they blew a save and then multiple innings because the manager used Iran in two non-save situations on Wednesday and Thursday a ridiculous ridiculous decision making They then lose Friday night because of it and then Within minutes of that game, it's like okay, Lasardo is not going to pitch Saturday now. I thought my original thought was

1:49:08Well, that's kind of them considering the division and they want to get him some rest and it's probably precautionary But then you know you start hearing more and you hear his comments about it And then if it was games seven of the world series he would have pitched and you're like okay Maybe this is worse than we're letting on uh and I was talking to to Madgeau about this and he's like there is no such thing as a minor pitching injury on September 13 I was I kind of just the feeling that I have about the whole situation now and the odds of him pitching in a wildcard series are now Definitely below 25% Into he's I was hoping you're gonna say below 50 percent but yeah Maybe we'll make it up to mystic, but yeah below 25% and by the way even if he does pitch There's huge uncertainty about what that looks like right again for a guy who has I mean this season He's had months 2.87 ERA 14 and five leads the team with

1:50:09221 strikeouts. I mean he has been Incredible fifth in the majors in strikeouts As Jess picture in the national leagues since the All Star break. Yeah, it's not even really close. He's the better than is I know You have to wonder and I think a lot of people pointed this immediately The Phillies pushed him right they really pushed him in the second half the pitch counts were regularly over 100 they kind of took off the the Guard rails that they had always put on him in the last season and earlier in this season He had that complete game now the pitch count wasn't that high, but he did go over 104 straight starts So I think there are questions of like did they overwork this guy did they kind of push the young below up a little bit too far Especially in that game against Atlanta which ends up being His final start is the complete game shut out of the Braves and that son and that Monday Labor Day game where he was so good It does make you wonder

1:51:10We'll never know for sure. Well, what's fair here bungee because this is you know I Listen, I have been very clear that the manager is not for me and I look forward to a day when there is a new manager I've except that if I if I want to be fair about it If I'm him you're trying to win games you were in a division race up up until you know like a week ago You really had a real chance to win the division your bullpen Has not been good and your starting pitching has been excellent and this guy's been excellent And it's not like he was dealing with a bunch of you know Injuries throughout the season where you felt like you need to manage it I know in the past that has been the case so I actually have a little bit of a harder time crushing the manager for leaving him in there now it organizationally you can look at it there I'm not telling my manager. Yeah, I think I think it is the organization Had a plan that was working and then kept pushing the envelope and pushing the envelope and then said You know what this is working. We're gonna ride this and then they got burned

1:52:11They got a little little too close to the sun. Okay. It's all this stuff now I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing. I mean they got you know a ton of innings of great baseball from a pitcher An extension that was widely seen Leaguewide as as like a pretty risky move before the season Because of las Artos track record his injury history prior to joining the Phillies so By all accounts they have been right on Hazus, Luzardo and They deserve credit for that. I do feel weird blaming them again because There wasn't like there were warning signs. It wasn't like his stuff was falling off It wasn't like oh he's really struggling or he's laboring if anything He became more efficient and that's what able to enable him to go deeper into games Compared to last season when we would see him kind of you know Maybe he would throw six innings give up one run But it was a really laboring six and he would take him 20 plus pitch innings all the time You really hadn't hadn't seen any of that and in fact the Atlanta start was so notable for that Because I think in the seventh inning he was around 75 pitches and you're like what what is going on here? This is unheard of

1:53:13So I'm not saying I blame the organization, but they definitely flew close to the sun and paid the price for it All right, so that is a huge Huge deal now you mentioned somebody on your timeline is saying no la you know no low percent what what is our starting pitching situation Going into a three game series against whatever Team it is Yeah, we learn in Sanchez are gonna start games one and two I think anybody else it may be a ridiculous argument air no la's been great relative to expectation in the second half, but I think in his worth noting How much small sample pitching data can kind of skew our perceptions of what a pitcher is because in the first half of the season when he was giving up more homers and His era was like six The stuff wasn't actually that different the The he ran pretty bad with runners on base the strikeout numbers were pretty similar to where they are now He's kept the ball in the park better He's done a better job with the runners on base in the last few months

1:54:15And that has led to a dramatic improvement of his baseline numbers his the era is stuff like that that we all look at that everybody can see but under the hood He's still the same you know four point two-ish pitcher Underline peripherals say that he's around there And now he's got a instead of a five or five fifty ERA where he's running like a run worse than his peripherals Now he's running like a full run better and he's put up a three ERA in the second half here He's been amazing and I have been here and happy to live through every second of it I'm very excited that Aaron has found this they've needed it Yeah, it doesn't mean I'm going to like completely change my perception of him as a pitcher. We've watched a lot of Aeronola baseball over the last Eight years of our lives and a lot of them not very good Aaronola baseball over the last two years of our lives To to say oh because Chris had a bad month and like his command seems just generally off We're not going to go to him in a playoff series Is crazy now the reason I mentioned home field advantage being so important and we have talked about this

1:55:19We've been on this for how many years now is just how drastic these splits are home and away for Christanches this year Because at home this season Is ERA 2.2 On the road it's almost four Last season this is not a one season phenomenon last season his ERA at home 1.9 on the road over three Two seasons ago that was the most dramatic one 2024 2.2 at home five on the road and the cubs have crushed him multiple times in rigly so if you're looking at You know how do they match up in a playoff series and who's your game to starter one the cubs are great against lefties And two clearly the Sanchez is at the same pitcher away from the bank Getting that started home is a massive massive difference More than just your normal home field advantage in my opinion so that's that is is it fair to say that's the biggest reason to Yes for them to yeah Christopher Sanchez also I want to go to a philis playoff game selfish well

1:56:20Yeah, and also the stat you mentioned earlier about who you know the winner of game one of a Of these three game series all right So that's why last 10 games you got a route for them to stay ahead of the cubs Get the home playoff series Get that number four seed then you get Christopher Sanchez and Zach we learn you take your chances might This and no one's gonna go into that series feeling So confident that the philis got this and they're definitely gonna win But you take your chances in that situation. It's a better situation than going on the road with those guys All right, Lizarro we covered rotation. We covered what else is on our mind here I don't know how People who talk about baseball all year like every day Do this job Without being just like idiots most of the time Because we came on here like a month ago And we were like Bryson stop man what a what a turnaround He's all the changes we we were high on him as a podcast

1:57:20I mean He's not even the worst hitter we'll get to him too But what the hell has happened To Bryson stop in Brandon Marsh I got nothing I honestly I don't have a good answer for this Now you know we could get we could get into the marsh stuff. I think there's there's questions about What the ground balls really came back into his profile like if you pull up a chart of his rolling ground ball rated His just skyrocketed in the last two to three months and that has led to just a lot of like weak contact It's not even like he's striking out all the time He's just not getting to his his best swing. He's not getting Consistent quality of contact which we know he relies so much on But the stat stuff is is more puzzling because like his heart hit rate has just fallen off the cliff. He stopped hitting the ball hard Yeah, I don't have an answer for you. I was gonna ask you for the answer Well, because earlier this season when the overall numbers weren't good We could at least point to well at least he's hitting the ball he's hitting the ball harder than he did last year

1:58:23Let's give it some more time. Let's look at it But if he's now not hitting the ball hard and the numbers are bad I mean he had the swing last night where you know, you tried to pull it To write field and he missed it and like his face. I mean his his reaction As that ball was caught and the inning was over that was that was as frustrated as I think I've ever seen Price and Stad in a Philly's uniform So yeah, I was hoping for you to give me some answers. I don't know what it is It so it is it is a dangerous game to like queue up just a couple of weeks of data Which which is why I think even in August when we did the last pot. I think it was toward the end of August And we were like well, they just had like their best process hitting month ever We've seen like four years of this Philly's team I'm not gonna just pretend that this is the new Philly's and that they've solved other issues because they had one team Oh, then they did just walk 13 times in a game I think that had a lot more to do with that's pitching Uh

1:59:23But that was the thing we said was like okay, so they just had like their best two weeks stretch of pitching ever or hitting ever with walks and patience They just happen to run into a bad couple of weeks of pitching And I think the the last month has proven out that to be the case where you're like well Mm-hmm when you zoom out you see the sample of an offense that doesn't Necessarily have good hitting process It doesn't get on base consistently that relies a ton on slug to pull through As far as stock goes yeah, I mean the hard hit rate is down It's not so down where it's like below what he was past seasons So there is a little bit of bad variance in there his hard hit rate in the last uh month Is actually pretty similar to his hard hit rate each of the last four years so Is that a sign that the old habits the the bigger sample brison stout regression is here And then he this is just what he is because we're now in year Five of him is an everyday major league player and right now

2:00:24His underlying numbers are gonna end up being the best of his career But his top line numbers are gonna be basically the same as last year I don't know what yeah, I don't have a great answer. I wish I did This is where I'm like hedging my answers as you can tell because the the last month is really shook me after taking our victory lap Well listen mo the default for baseball analysis most of the time is the old back of the baseball cart thing where it's like art If this guy's had a lot of it bats if he's been in the majors for a long time That's probably just who he's gonna be and that could be a simple the the simple explanation here his opus right now is 7-11 His career opus over a five-year span is 7-03 It's almost exactly on what he has been for his entire career We got hopeful that This was maybe an exception to you know, which doesn't happen a lot of times but can happen that hey Maybe he's figured some things out because again the underlying numbers the approach stuff what did actually look different Then it had previously that hey, maybe there is some upside here that we didn't see through most of his first four seasons in the majors

2:01:29But maybe it's not that I mean, you know the the most likely scenario again Most of the time when a guy's in his fifth season in the NFL and he's had almost 3000 played appearances Is that who he's gonna be and it's really not you know, maybe there's a year here and a year there that it changes But if he plays for another five years the numbers are gonna look almost exactly like they looked the first five years Or maybe worse because he's gonna age in his 30s now. I still think he's a useful player Oh, yes, yes, yeah, because of his defense And I think he's kind of the least of their problems But yes, we were bullish. I was bullish Then hey if he's actually a good hitter and above average emerald be hitter that changes the way I look at this lineup That changes the way I look at them this year that changes the way I look at them next year And right now it doesn't look like that's really going to be the case where you can just see a scenario where you know Mac kelp is writing a story next spring training about this Hey, what you know what happened? What was different about the end versus the beginning is their hopeful now He's entering his age 29 season probably not that's not how it works in the majors. So it's funny branded marsh

I mean he's actually having a below average season for his career averages now a guy who made the all-star team And was their third best hitter for the first half of the season his opus now is all the way down to 715 It was 742 you know his career average is 742 now I know part of that probably has to do with you just getting more bats against left handed pictures I would imagine not even lately though they've stopped doing that you know that was that was the thing and Not to go back to our guy topper but you know one of the criticisms that A lot of the players seem to have was that topper was very reluctant To ever start marsh Against lefties and I'm not saying that him getting all these lefty run in june july is what led to him having this career Were slump where he can't hit anything anymore, but he Has not seen lefties in his career a lot for a reason and the idea was well

2:03:38You just got to get him more at bats against lefties and eventually he'll figure it out That's how you get better hitting against lefties That's not been the case and he has now lost his playing time against lefties But I guess the question is and and delicous hasn't been so good where you take his playing time Against righties But this has become like a black hole situation for the Phillies in the outfield again and you know We had hoped that the marsh emergence and maybe What the little they've gotten from from Crawford and then Harper going back out there would kind of solve this outfield problem Not in the case. I mean outfielders this year In baseball the Phillies where do you want to think where do you think they rank in offensive production from the outfield Now that marshes knows dubbed Well, I'm just looking at his post his post all star op s punsy have you seen this is number four It starts with the four four 80 is the worst qualified hitter in baseball That's crazy now again. There's survivorship bias there because most players were that bad No longer qualified because they start losing playing time. Yeah, marsh has not because the Phillies have no depth

2:04:44But but that's a complete zero that's that's the as clear as you added to zero as it gets there's more zero We'll get into but I don't know 27th. They are 29th and out fielder production Offensive you want to guess where the Phillies ranking catcher production this season. Oh, oh 27th 30th 30th wow, and it's because the backups. I mean JT is not good. He's bottom third But the backups are so bad Martian and stubs I've given them so little the Phillies this season Phillies catchers I'm gonna read you the slash line. Okay 191 263 That's a 560 OPS who 4% worse than every other offense in baseball and 50% worse than league average Some believable how many holes this lineup has and I I think that will be We've talked about this team

2:05:46Why you should be optimistic why you should be pessimistic why it's time to believe why you shouldn't believe why are things gonna be different And I you made a really good point at some point when we did the show like two months ago And you were like well, no, this is different like they are worse Yeah, and this offense is way worse than it was last year So maybe it'll be different in the playoffs because it's a tiny sample but I think you're kind of like wish casting and just praying on variance to happen and go your way To believe that this offense is going to compete consistently in the playoffs and especially because That's just yeah, yeah, right. It's like you know how how can you wh- how can you win a series? You know all right starting pitching great bullpen Great offense and it's like well great offense Not feeling good about that bullpen Not feeling good about that and so now it comes down to one area where you can you know One way to win a series and that that part of your team has been very good and that hasn't let you down previously in the playoffs That's been very good and you've still lost so that's been an issue. Yeah, so that that's where I am

2:06:51You know you you message me hey should we do we do some fillies and I'm like all right. Let's do some fillies But I'm just kind of like I just don't I don't feel great about it by the way You didn't even mention the guy making again 27 million dollars per year on an 11 year 300 million dollar contract which I honestly and I know I'm just like a sort of A meme of myself now because I break his name up every time we do a fillies podcast But I don't under I don't really if I had to come up with a list of like Philadelphia athletes that got paid this amount that got Didn't get the criticism of like the other guys on the roster. I mean trade turner. I really don't remember this His OPS is worse than Alec Bome worse than Bryson's dot worse than Brandon Marsh It is ninth on the team here now that's the same as Justin Crawford. Yeah same as Justin Crawford As being paid 27 million dollars per year and we just talked for 30 minutes

2:07:53And his name didn't even come out now. Maybe that's our fault But this seems pretty consistent because it's boring. There's nothing else to say anymore What else we supposed to say we're just to come on and say he sucks. I don't know But last year he didn't suck that was the only good year they've gotten out of this country Uh, and honestly like when you look at what the differences in this offense right so 2023 Phillies were the ninth best offense in the regular season 2024 Phillies were the tenth best offense in the regular season last year. So he's were the eighth best offense going into the playoffs this year 28 Oh that one thing alone and like again, we wanted to believe we were like oh maybe they can sustain this august success They had yeah, but the new brooch we wanted to believe it I think we were like oh maybe this because again When you look at the big sample of a baseball team and you're like okay They were eighth eighth ninth tenth eighth eighth night like this pretty consistently good but not a lead offense And then they have a four-month stretch where they just cannot hit and they're relying exclusively on the pitching

2:08:54To get by and a couple of hitters And then all of a sudden in august you're like oh well, they've actually started hitting again It's like well, maybe this lineup is coming to life and they're gonna be more like the eighth or tenth best offense in baseball And then it turns out that will be the one month where that happened and you saw by the way because of how good the pitching is What this team can do when they are just The same good hitting team. There are no holes. Yeah, they went here. They want an unbelievable run because their hitting was above average It's all they needed to have a crazy run Again, I think that is a bigger concern to me than like the well, they've sucked in the playoffs the last few years Offensively therefore they will suck again I think that's a that is bad logic But I think it's pretty good logic to say they've been a bad offensive team for 145 games Odds are they are not going to all of a sudden find this Magical offense. I mean if you want to Offensive comparison go look at the Cleveland Guardians have done in the playoffs the last few years Not a lot of runs scoring they typically come in as a great pitching staff with no offense and

2:09:59The idea and it's funny because Bill mentioned this and he picked the failures to win the national league yesterday And I think he was that was crazy giving me the role of you. Yeah, I don't know He's like, you know, Schwurr could have have a month. He just carries the team Gosh, whorber hasn't been very good the last two months Yeah, I sure was been around the league average with the with the stick He's on pace to spray. I mean he's probably gonna break the record from most strikeouts in MLB history I'm like I'm not saying he's had a bad year. He's had a great year right there are so many bigger issues But if your hope is like yeah, Harper and Schwurrber will just carry us and we'll be fine that to me Feels dubious to It wouldn't be enough. I mean we could because it like you see the play that's enough if your other the rest of your lineup is sort of like a round average Have one guy who pops but when you're as bad as they've been it's not now if you want to positivity It again, it's a it's a we're doing all weird stuff with samples But since they all start break they are 10th in OPS. They are 10th and run scored now that includes that stretch

2:11:00You were talking about this is a 55 game stretch. So it's not everything, but it's not nothing either So there's uncertainty listen I don't think you're gonna just find a lot of Philly's fans that are like all right. This is their year They're going to you know, they're gonna go into the playoffs. It's gonna be different this year So we'll see we'll see how the last 10 games here play out. Let's root for a home Playoff series though after that conversation. I'm like That's good that crowd's gonna be With if they just start people will still be on top man you get Zach Wheeler on the mound You get Chris Stancher's on the mound a citizen thank Park with in late September early October Since it's not even gonna be red October this year because the playoffs start on the 29th Yeah I'll I'll be excited. I'll be ready to go. I have I have playoff baseball still watching this team Another thing by the way, I'm so tired of hearing about the September like oh no you got to get hot before the playoffs I have to do this I've do this bit every year. So I'm just gonna say it There's basically no correlation between how a team performs in September and how a team performs in October and if you want a good example of this

2:12:08The Phillies worst September of the last five years. You want to guess which year was she'll 2022 do I join too? Yeah, they went to the world super marlin series, right? Yeah, it was the marlins. It was the cubs It was the nationals they were horrifying in the September that thought I thought they were gonna miss the playoffs for a bit there until the brewers collapsed even harder And now you know, they had a great September last year and people were like look at this team. They're flying high You know odds makers made the metasup against the Dodgers and even without Zach Wheeler and then You know the batsman cold again So the idea that you have to be hot going in October is myth and has always been kind of a myth And so I want to just put that on all right I'm on the place.
