About this episode

“This message is a paid partnership with Apple Card. One of my favorite parts of Game Day is everything leading up to it. Getting the house ready for a watch party, putting on my favorite team hoodie and making one last run to the store before kick-all.”From the transcript

The Miami Dolphins opened the Jeff Hafley era with a frustrating 27-13 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, and the final score only tells part of the story.

Host Jim "Gries" Grieshaber, Kyle Crabbs of Locked On Dolphins and former Miami Dolphin Jeff "Z" Zgonina break down a Week 1 game filled with missed opportunities, costly penalties and protection problems. Miami's defense intercepted Kirk Cousins twice, while the return game repeatedly created favorable field position — including a spectacular 79-yard Jaylen Wright kickoff return — but the Dolphins continually failed to turn those opportunities into points.

Malik Willis finished 15-of-27 for 222 yards with one interception, added 39 rushing yards and Miami's only touchdown, but was sacked five times for 35 yards. De'Von Achane was held to 36 rushing yards on 11 carries, while Caleb Douglas emerged as one of Miami's brightest offensive performers with 5 catches for 94 yards.

Defensively, Miami's youth was tested. Rookie linebacker Jacob Rodriguez led the Dolphins with 14 tackles, Chris Johnson recorded 11 tackles, a TFL and two passes defended, and young safeties Michael Taaffe and Dante Trader Jr. each intercepted Cousins.

The Squad breaks down the game's turning point, Miami's inability to capitalize in Raiders territory, the offensive-line problems, the lack of a running game, the Raiders' success with Ashton Jeanty, and what Hafley's young Dolphins must correct before remaining out West to face the San Francisco 49ers next week.

Raiders 27. Dolphins 13. Miami is 0-1 — and now the response matters.

In the books, it's Grease C. and Kyle Yor, Dolphin Squad Show here on Lockdown Dolphins and the Lockdown podcast network, your team every day. And the number one, numero uno, sports podcast network, top 10 channel. Of course, the Dolphins lose at Las Vegas 27th, 13th to the Raiders. All kinds of missed opportunities today. And what Kyle Crabbs just called before we went on the show, a winnable game. No doubt about it. And Jeff Halfley's debut. You see what's there on the right, costly mistakes. Rookie's tested some past, some failed. We have some things to talk about there. This is wasted for sure. Mistakes killing Miami in the 27th, 13th loss. They're going to stay out, West, and prepare for the 49ers game next week. Before we get to Z and Kyle, I want to remind you that today's episode is brought to you by Kyle Shee for a limited time. And Z, Kyle, I want to start with you. Z immediate reaction here in segment one. Just kind of going off the cuff with the reacts. Like 27 to 13, they didn't get blown out. They didn't get run out of Vegas. They created takeaways. They created explosive returns on special teams. They moved the football at times. They had young players make some plays here and there. But in the end, guys, what we're talking about are wasted opportunities. Eight penalties for 61 yards, five sacks allowed, 35 yards lost. Two of 10 on third down, one of three in the red zone. The yardage almost even. But Vegas ran 17 more plays. And Z, a lot of mistakes made in this game by the Miami dolphins. And you're just not going to win in the NFL home or road, making those kinds of mistakes throughout a game. No, I show it how young we are as a team out there today. You know, I just thought the mistakes and just like the missed opportunities. You know, quarterback, he made some plays here in there. He held the ball too long a few times in the pocket, I thought. And not to have a run game pop in like I thought was discouraging to me.

And then it's same as on defense. We didn't stop the run either. I thought we had to we did damages all line, especially interior wise. But genty was all over the place. Just running people over making a lot of plays and I had soft to him because he had a heck of a game today. Yeah, he did. Z and he had that ankle injury coming in. But you know, the number one goal, Kyle, for the Miami dolphins was to establish Devon H and in that mission completely failed today in Vegas. Yeah, I was I'm in the same boat as Z where I thought the most disappointing thing was just the lack of success to get the ground game rolling and you kind of wanted to lean on a little bit and you saw. Early, but with the way that the Raiders went right down the field and they put points on the board and then you're down 10 nothing. We've said it on this squad show last six months. Plenty of times that's not the kind of game script you can really afford to play. Like you kind of got to be a little bit more stiff early. I thought the defense gave you a chance to stay in the game in the second half.

But they had three possessions in score 17 points and three possessions offensively in the first half of the football game. So yeah, if that's the way your defense sets you up offensively and then you make a mistake or you have a penalty, which they had on the opening possession where you kind of felt like they had some things rolling. Now you're chasing the whole game and it frankly was not good enough. You absolutely have to give credit to the Raiders. I thought they came in and played very physical on both sides of the ball. And I think they deserve a lot of credit for that side of thing. That's not to say there weren't some individual performances for Miami that I find very encouraging, but that's probably going to be the central team through a lot of games that we played this year. But the collective unit of running the ball, I wasn't where it needed to be today. No, and see, I want to come right back to you on this 11 carries 36 yards for HN 3.3 per carry Miami finishes with 74 yards on the ground, guys. But a lot of that was Willis running for his life. And you know, Z, when you can't run the football and you become one

dimensional, we saw that in the second half. And even on the play when Willis hit Washington, he's running for his life. They barely avoided a safety on the same drive. When you can't run it and the other team knows it, then your quarterbacks are sitting duck and they were lucky that Malik is mobile. Otherwise, it would have been a lot worse. Yeah, no, he said, I thought we established a run a little bit earlier and just keep going at it, just to keep them honest. And keep more guys in the box so we can throw these young receivers. Because those young receivers out there are still trying to learn their way. And especially the NFL speed and NFL arena on game days, different. And we didn't give him a chance, but not run the ball enough. Keeping more people in the box. Because when we had to pass it, there was nobody open. And that's why Willis had a run and it was good to see him getting out there early. He made a couple plays early with his legs. But again, you can't have a full diet of that to win a ball game. No, and he had, he was sack five times guys for 35 yards. And it could have been a lot more Malik Willis dancing around. Actually looked like Houdini a few times back there, Kyle.

And I'm wondering, Kyle, how much you put on this line? How much of it is unfamiliar with the new players on the team and the play calling with Bobby Sloik. And to me, it just went up front and those guys, I mean, I'm not going to great because that's not what I do. But the guys up front were really disappointing today. Well, Malik Willis averaged 3.21 seconds time to throw across his attempts today. And that's almost a second longer than two a tongue of a low head for across a full season in 2013 or 2023 and 2024, right? So it's a very different world that you are going to play now with a different skill set at quarterback. So I think some of this, yes, I think Malik had some opportunities to get rid of the ball faster and either take a throw away. Or I thought there were a few times where he probably could have leaned more into his legs. He only carried the ball six times. I know you have a self preservation element. I know they drilled into him, staying in the pocket. But I think there's a balance to this and with how this game kind of unfolded,

certainly felt that like there were a few times where we had a gut off the top of the drop and you feel him kind of stick in there and then decide to move. But then he doesn't run. And I think that could have helped. I think you only had so many answers for your right tackle situation with Max Crosby. Crosby once you hit midway through the third quarter was turning Austin Jackson inside out and Austin as a player, we kind of know what he is. If you're you're trailing by multiple scores and the second half of a football game and you're in true dropback passing mode, which is what they were in, where you couldn't do the play action passing. You couldn't really get the quarterback on the move with a lot of the boot action because you didn't get the run game rolling. That's not a recipe for success, right? It's just not that's not where he wins as a player. So I think there's certainly compounding issues that is you, you try to unravel and debrief after a game like this. I don't want to make any bold proclamations without watching the game tape, but I thought the offensive has protection gave him some good pockets in the

first half and about midway through the third quarter. And then once we got later into this game and it was time to tee off, I think everything unraveled for. And that happens a lot in the NFL Z as you know, but when I think about what happened with Miami today, two guys, and look, they had the interception by taft, the interception by Dante trader, safety's playing well, but they had three opportunities, Z in time, right inside Raiders territory and kept for counting the opening drive because they look pretty decent on offense on the opening drive, get into Raiders territory, the penalties start rearing their ugly heads. And you know, then they don't score there, but then they get the too long kick off returns to great kickoff returns, one to about midfield in the Raiders territory, the other one all the way down into the 10 yard line. And then you get the other interception by trader three times on the Raiders side of the field. No points. Yeah, you got to turn those into into points, least something. Feel goal touchdown something you got to put it on a board, especially that long return, I went down that 10, but again, penalties, you know, pushed us back and then we missed the field go off of that. That's inexcusable. You got to turn that into points.

You know, that heck of a turn by that kid and, you know, you got, you got, it's like a turnover really, you know, because you gain a possession there basically and, you know, we just, you know, let it fizzle away and you can't just do that. Okay, you got to turn that stuff over into points. Yeah, that's rough Kyle. I mean, I'm sitting there going, you get it first in goal at the 10, not first in goal, but you get it at the 10 yard line, a beautiful kickoff return. Too bad it didn't score. It was so close to being a kickoff return touchdown. So, you know, just it didn't happen and then the offense just couldn't get it going from there and those things were really disappointing that they couldn't execute and turn any of those into points. Yeah, it's, um, especially that kick return where that kind of puts you in position and kind of just get back in and you're okay, we're in the mid-red zone. You could get a score here. It's a one, it would be it would have been a one score game going into the fourth quarter. So I think you look at all phases. I think the kick coverage for Miami was not good enough.

I thought the offensive execution was not good enough. The third down to a 10 was not good enough. The running game effort was not good enough. Your ability to stop the Raiders running game early was not good enough, right? So they look like a team that was the youngest team in football, started a bunch of rookies and having a bunch of deadcap payroll that's not going into the roster today. And, um, when you have a game like this, I think you hope that you just don't make the same mistakes twice. And I think that's a tall task with a young team and not so many young players, but this is there'll be a lot of good learning lessons when they put the game tape on tomorrow. And on the positive side Z Malik did make some plays, did make some nice throws, but Caleb Douglas had a real nice debut. Both you guys to use the first then Kyle five catches for 94 yards for the rookie who was pretty effective, especially in the first half. Yeah, exactly the first half of the he was on fire. You know, he did that nice catch on the silence that they said was incomplete, but it came back, you know, half been a nice challenge there because it was a completion. You know, that was a good job of getting both his feet in bounds and he still needs

to tap that second foot just to make sure, you know, that's a rookie, rookie move and he'll learn from that off the tape, you know, going forward. But I thought he was an outstanding game, you know, for a rookie and bell makes him good place too now is a rookie. You need a couple good, good catches, you know, throughout the game. Yeah. And he, what he said before the game, he's about 85%. So there's still room for him to feel a little bit better out there too. Kyle, your thoughts on the rookie receivers? I mean, we talked about Douglas Z mentioned bell as well there too. Yeah. Caleb some great plays, you know, that that whole shot up the sideline when they were really backed up to set up this the short yardage opportunity for a chunk play, the toe tap along the sideline where he does, does just get the toe down long enough. You see this explosive play element. You see the verticality that he's capable of bringing the table and I think the chemistry that he was able to build and being the guy that was healthy and rolling all throughout mini camp and early in training camp as compared to Chris Bell.

I thought that was a great first showing for Caleb Douglas. The Malik Willis or Malik Washington performance to go to a different receiver that's not a rookie. I thought that last play was kind of a nice cherry on top of the day, right? Is it kind of you get a catch and a run and you get an opportunity to get out in the open field, make a play and you get it punched out there and you have a turnover at the very end of the football game that's just kind of leaves a sour tasting your mouth offensively where the defense gave you a chance, right? So I think there were some of the the instances where you were backed up where there's some sacks Malik Willis took today that I don't know that I blame him too much because based off what we could see from the back end, I don't know who they'd hate anybody go to. So is that play design is that young guys is that getting jammed to the line of script. I don't know yet, right? Like we have to watch tape, but there's ups and downs. The ups, the high points for Caleb Douglas were great today. And Chris Bell had that nice crosser and physicality after the catch make the

first guy miss, which is what they're build as it's just use this and build and let's build more and let's get them more involved next week. Yeah, and we'll break down the defense in just a minute, but real quick, I want to talk about the numbers 21 first downs to 13. Raiders win that battle, obviously against Miami and the third down efficiency was huge. Raiders were five for 13, but the dolphins were two for 10 total plays 67 to 50 Las Vegas yardage wise, you know, 290 to 259. Not that big of a difference. It was mostly passing yards for Miami. The run game is really something that they needed to get more out of today. And you know, they had five sacks for minus 35 yards. They ran the ball for 74. The Raiders had 130 on the ground eight penalties for 61 yards. The Raiders had six for 29. The turnover battle was even to a piece and the time of possession about 10 minutes more for the Raiders, but Z before we hit the break, how do you not sack Kirk cousins? Howling though, I mean, that that almost seems like a physical and possibility in a 60 minute football game. There was zero pass rush today.

Look at a lot of guys who run down the middle, you know, towards the end of the game, they start bringing some heat, you know, when we finally got back here in Nocturne, Ron, a little bit, but I was surprised. You know, I thought for sure we'd get a little bit of pressure, at least by other him, but he had a clean pocket pretty much all game and was able to, you know, pick us apart early. And Gentie played well too. So the defensive line, Z keeping it with you just not, not, I mean, maybe the weakest unit on the field for Miami today was the defensive line. Yeah. Again, we talked about it, you know, building up for this game that a lot of those cats in playing preseason were hurt. Exactly. You know, he was hurt all preseason seemed like getting practice a lot and it kind of showed today. You know, I thought our D lines getting pushed off the ball, getting to the second level, not giving clean looks for, you know, the linebackers. And our linebackers, I know on that one Gentie score for the past, you know, Rodriguez, you know, he got peeped in the run play, you know, it's a rookie mistake. He'll learn from it, but he got sucked up into the line by time he, you know, came out to cover him.

He was too late. It just the stuff like that is got to be fixed and it will be, be corrected off the tape and hopefully moving forward, we get better. That's former dolphins defensive line, Mjewskenina. There's the number one Miami dolphins inside or on your right, Kyle Krabs. I'm Jim Grease, I've recall me. Grease, just lucky to be here with these two guys in the wake of the 27 to 13 opening day loss dolphins at the Raiders. When we come back, we have the player, the game, we have the X factor, turning point, all kinds of things like that. Looking ahead to San Francisco, we still are going to break down the defensive side of the ball on the other side. Kyle is going to give his thoughts there and man, I just want to mention on the other side that we're going to come right back with that turning point. There was a point in this game where everything could have turned in Miami's favor and it looked like it was about to and then everything hit him the wrong way. And I'll point that out right when we come back breaking down the defense as well. This is your dolphin squad show on the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. All right, here we go.

The rest of the way for you and guys before we continue breaking down the defense, I just want to hit real quick and I want to get this in. And I'm just going to play the element because this was to me the turning point of the game.

And I'll get you guys reactions in just a moment. 27th 13th the dolphins fall to the Raiders 5 sacks for minus 35 8 penalty 61 yards. No running games so to speak 36 yards for HN. But they still had a shot mistakes killed them. But there was a point in the game when it looked like the dolphins could take control. And they didn't. Time to reveal where the game was once or lost. It's the turning point. Yeah, the dolphins at one point, you know, four plays 52 yards, one 45. In the third quarter get to within 17 to 13. You know what I'm saying? And they score a touchdown there. Malik Willis with a 14 yard touchdown run gets him to within 17 13. What happens right after that? Well, they give up a big kickoff return Z. The Raiders take it five plays only 50 yards for a touchdown to make it for 13. Then on the very next Miami possession, two plays and interception thrown by Willis. Raiders get another field goal. And then right after that, the dolphins miss a field goal.

So this astros sequence when Miami was getting close, little momentum was going our way there. Yes, without a doubt. I mean, you go down, you score, you, you hope your defense goes out or you know, the kickoff return went for, you know, to the 50 yard line. That hurts. You know, that's just a buzz killing on it's like almost like a turn. We're really shortens to feel, especially with a veteran quarterback. You know, you can't, you can't do that. I got a Kirk cousins back there. You just can't. And you know, we, and we talked about it. The Internet, one of my things was I was worried about was our special teams play. You know, yeah, we had a couple good returns, but besides that, it was pretty shoddy. And that's, you know, that's the problem with young players in, you know, in, in, in the lack of preseason work, you know, and it, it, it weird. It's ugly head today. And it cost us at that turning point. You just brought up Greece. 1244 left in the third quarter when Willis scored Kyle and then disaster struck. Yes, is a pretty eye opening here. The Raiders first offensive possession started at the seven yard line. After that, they started on their own 33 off of a kickoff.

They started on their own 46 after a kickoff. And then they started on their own 50 after a kickoff. Can't do that. We got to be better on kick coverage and we got to get guys that can get off a box on the edge. I know one of those was Robert Peele kind of got swallowed up. He's a defensive end out there and was playing as one of the outside guys and gets kind of really bogged down and congested. And now you're giving up creases and you're giving up the sideline and he's getting up the sideline and you need the guys on the back end to help clean it up. So the kick coverage element, I think that's a great call out by Z ahead of time before this game was played ended up really killing you early. And the only reason the field position stuff kind of balanced out is because the dolphins got the two turnovers and their own explosive kickoff return there in the second half of this game. And you know, cousins, passes John L.A. on the all time touchdown pass list, the 15th quarterback to throw for at least 300 TDs in his career.

He threw three today, two of them to Ashton Gentiz. He talked about him. He ran for 102 yards, caught six passes for 45 more. That was the game we were hoping to see out of HN, but it was not HN who put that up. It was the number six overall pick in last year's draft coming off that injury that he suffered to the ankle on August 23rd, but Gentiz was the best player on the field today. And the dolphins didn't sack cousins at all. They picked him off twice, but three touchdowns for cousins, Gentiz having the game he had. So even without Brock Bauer's, the Raiders offense did more than enough Z. Yeah, I mean, I mean, mayor that you know, the second tight end, he's no slouch either. He's a second round pick out a Notre Dame a few years ago and he just got paid on what Saturday. So I mean, the reason why he got paid and he showed it today. He he, he mountain, he played a good game and you know, it caused us problems. But again, we didn't get it after the quarterback and that's something we had to do. And that's another spot I was worried about was our pass rush because he's catching heaven. Had a lot of live reps together to work their gains and work all their their pass rush moves.

Now we hear about shoppers power all preseason. And that's what he did. He ran down the middle of the guy and got swallowed up. He's got to know he's got to work more than half a man and use his speed and his bend and all those good tools they came out of Penn State with because he just run down the middle guy. He wears you out and you get no pressure. Yeah, and a really tough day for the Dolphins defense Kyle. They didn't get a lot of pressure. They didn't have a lot of tackles for loss. They didn't do a lot on at all today on the field. I mean, Jacob Rodriguez mixed reviews and his debut. And the other thing Kyle is they targeted Chris Johnson all day long. We knew that was coming for the rookie. Yeah, I don't I don't want to speak out of turn here because I know some of these Chris Johnson reps were appeared to be some kind of zone or zone match and there's guys in the middle of the field that are triggering down and plastering on stuff to the opposite side that I don't know if they're supposed to be because that's leaving this big vacancy that Chris has an outcover guy where you think maybe he has he thinks he has support.

So I thought Chris did some nice things. I thought Chris was present in the run game. I know he missed the one tackle out there on the perimeter with Michael Mayor, but I thought he showed up at the catchpoint and had good physicality. He was targeted to ton. Yes, absolutely. I can't say with confidence right now as I'm sitting here talking to you and I don't want to talk out of my rear end because that's not fair to Chris or that's not fair to the other players in question that I just don't know where the responsibility is. But I thought he showed the versatility that you want. I think he was present enough that and I saw enough good reps where I say okay, like even that touchdown catch with with genty like it was it was right there right you give credit for a perfect ball to put that thing right. And that was one of those plays where I don't know what it looked like there was a safety that had potential to be like rat in the hole in the middle of the field and it looked like he pushed to the two man side away where if he stays in the middle then Chris has support inside.

So I don't know what the coverage is there and I don't want to speak out of turn. But yes, he saw a lot of balls thrown his way and until he starts getting his hands on more footballs. That will continue to be the case right. If they'll come out and they'll rear up and they'll say we got access against this rookie. We're going to keep throwing at him because the Raiders had success throwing the football on last week. You're taking on that Z targeting the two rookies Johnson and Rodriguez who by the way, we're one, two on the dolphins and tackles today. Rodriguez with 14 and Johnson with 11. Well, yeah, but when you start seeing a DB with those kind of tackles, that's not good for your front sub. And that's what you know worries me because I saw the same thing in your debauch scores and when you have a total of 11 tackles in that your your nickel back. That's not good. You know, I especially when they run the ball as good as they are, you know, I get if it's a passing game. Okay, you know, it's a little easier pill swallow, but again, when it's a running game, like when genty was going in, you know, now your nickel backs making most of your tackles out tackling your linebacker and your D line. That's not good.

Not good at all. We got to fix that. Oh, doubt about it. That's Jeff Skeneenek, Kyle Crabs, Jim Grees, Haber, call me Grease and you know the two interceptions. I mean, that's a bright spot for the two young safeties Kyle. We've talked a lot about Taff and how quickly he adapts to the game and how smart he is. We saw that on his pick. He was in the perfect position for a throw that was a little overthrown. He actually went right to him and then trader who was one of the real break out. I don't want to say stars, but one of the guys we heard a lot about from training camp also had that pick. So good job overall by the safeties back there playing the past. Yeah, I'll say this for for how the dolphins played in coverage today. They gave up one completion to Kirk Cousins beyond 10 yard air yards past the line of scrimmage. Everything was in tight. Kirk was one of, I'm doing math in real time. So stick with me. Seven, one of seven past 10 yards beyond the line of scrimmage with two interceptions for 21 yards. So one of seven, 21 yards and two picks. So if you're looking for silver linings and performances and yes,

Taff is leveraged over top of an overthrow and is in great position. And trader is working the backside and cutting a route that's coming across the middle and poaching that from the backside of the progression. I think those are our great reps to kind of look at and draw positives from. And you know, I think Taff, if he's going to end up playing a lot, I think he's probably just somebody that I think has requisite range to play on the back end. I would just really try to keep him further back and have him be one of the deeper players. When you have a trader who's a more physical player, right? You have Chris Johnson who's a little bit more of a dense player is a knick true nickel. But I think would Taff kind of shows up down the box near the line of scrimmage. I thought there were some of the successful run reps that Las Vegas had in this game. You kind of saw Taff as the guy that was rolling down in. So I know the lot of that's formational, right? You're kind of an emergency of what you get from a motion perspective and you got to rock and roll the safety or what? So it's not a foolproof answer.

But I thought Taff's best moments came deeper. And I thought some of the other guys were better suited to play down low. Another thing to watch for in this game is Kyle Lewis was ruled out with a knee injury and was ruled out midway through the game. That's usually not a good sign when a guy gets the definitive out the designations that it just being left questionable. So hopefully everything's okay there. But that's another player that can contend long term to take some of those snaps. Little less than two minutes left in the segment guys. Zia want to ask you about the defense and anything you saw that you can build on. I mean, the coaching staff, you have to have things to build on. You have to have things to teach on. You also have the things to be pissed off about. You got plenty of those. But what did you see on the defensive side of the ball that makes you feel good moving forward? Well, I just said that the coverage was pretty good. Cousins didn't have a lot of deep balls. I think he just imagined if we had a pass rush to rattle him a little bit. Yeah. And you know, we might have a whole different conversation right now. Because again, if you have one unit that's kind of covering the guys pretty well, you know, those are some veteran receivers out there compared to what we shuffled out there.

You know, we had a bunch of rookies out there, you know, playing receiver. So if we had a pass rush, you know, I think it might even be a different conversation right now. But we didn't have that. But it's still our DB's. I thought we're doing a good job of covering it. And I want to piggyback off of that real quick grease before we have to go to break. Kirk's average time to throw. We mentioned Malik Willis is time to throw earlier in the show. Kirk's average time to throw in the first half was under 2.2 seconds. Like under 2.2 seconds. Like that is like that in comparison to, though, these quarterbacks, like Malik Willis today, where you're holding the ball over three seconds of time. So it was a lot of that falls in line with the passing distribution that we talked about. And only one of seven past 10 area yards downfield because it was a lot of middle of the field, free access, finding guys and taking advantage of open vacancies and getting the ball out fast and staying on schedule. So that really puts you in a buyer where they had success running the ball. And then they were in rhythm with free access underneath.

So at least early in the game, the first half of the game, part of the reason the past rush doesn't show up is because there's this leaking this on the back end is these guys are figuring out their spacing and stuff where you're hitting the top of the drop in the balls getting out. And that makes it tough. Now, as you got into the second half, I thought it's where the the past rush was really frustrating because Kirk did end up holding the ball. Kirk did try to push the ball down the field. They did come out when they were up 14 points and try a couple times to go for some kill shots. And those axioles getting bare hugged by two guys and they call legal contact by Jude Brunzel on the plan is the only thing that they call, but that's not the reason why you lost the game. Right. So it's you need a guys to play through half man much more frequently like Z said, and you needed them to get off of blocks and you didn't have either one. That's Kyle Crabbs locked on dolphins. You can catch him wherever you're seeing us or hearing us with the squad show right now with locked on dolphins every single day for us with the squad show. We have all those elements to do when we come back will go through some of the numbers for this game. The dolphins losers in the season opener 27 to 13. On September 25th. No one's coming for us. It's just you and me boy. 58 miles. Part of the beast is the must see adventure of the year. An incredible story of survival. I got you one of the most extraordinary on screen. Blondt you'll ever see. Only the greatest dog ever walked the earth. Brad Pitt. I'll get you home. Part of the beast. Lean theaters September 25th. Ready PG 13. Maybe inappropriate for children under 13. All right, I guess it's not going to play. Sorry, guys, there's supposed to be an element coming out of that spot. My kind of guy there, Ross though, with the beard in the bald head. I'm going to have to check out some of those products, man. The beard get a little bit longer. So it won't be itchy and all that. That's Kyle Krabs on the right. Jeff Skannina in the middle. I'm Jim Greasovic your squad show. We just talked about the offense, the defense. We gave our immediate emotional reactions in the beginning of the show. And now we get into some of the numbers, guys. Malik Willis and uneven debut 15 of 27 to 22.

No passing touchdowns did have the nice touchdown run. Had the one pick. QB rating 66.9. He actually had six carries for 39 yards. Had some flashes Z. He tried to push the ball vertically. Did it a few times. They took some shots down the field. He created with his legs ran for his life a lot. Hit Chris Bell for a 25 yarder. You know, let a couple of nice drives, but five sacks, 35 yards lost in the interception after excellent field position from the return. One of the biggest missed opportunities of the game. So I want to start with you Z. Then go right to Kyle. How do you grade QB one in his dolphins debut? It's hard to say because I get you. You look at it, watch it tape and break it down. A few things that I would say is like he's I think I thought he held the ball too long on a few of the past plays. He should just took off with his legs because that you know, there's nothing downfield. Don't try to make something out of nothing. And a few times you try to force balls into double coverage, which luckily we're incomplete because that's a. You don't want to do start doing that because that's right. Ruresa P for disaster.

That's making your team think about using your first pick over first pick in the draft for a quarterback next year. Kyle. Yeah, it's the protect the ball element of this. And that's that's such a big thing that John Eric Sullivan talked about. And obviously the the interception is one you certainly want to have back. And it felt like we're pressing because we're trailing and we want to get a shot down the field. I agree with Z that there were a few instances where it felt like maybe to just been better off going out and getting eight yards on second and 10 with your legs instead of sitting there in the pocket and try to read through it and make it happen, especially with as this game devolves on you. How much more that pressure off the right hand side of your protection was really feeling like it was ramping up. He made some really nice throws to the throw to Malik Washington that was incomplete on was at the opening possession. That Malik got one foot down and he tried to get his right hand in as he was going out of bounds. We just out by about a yard and a half. That's a great place to throw.

I thought some of the throws to Caleb Douglas, the whole shot when they were really backed up was a great place throw. You see the tools and it's all about okay. Here's our first data point. Where does he go from here? The thing that surprised me the least is he averaged 12 yards per attempt. Are yards down the field per attempt on his 27 attempts. There's a second highest mark of any quarterback in the NFL this week so far behind only Josh Allen was 12.6. So this was one of the most down field offenses from a passing standpoint that we saw in the NFL. It's just you didn't get the running game going off of it to be able to play complimentary football and you got behind on the scoreboard. So you were true dropback passing, which is not where any of these Shanahan style offenses are really coded to work the best. It's all about building off of the run game. So the challenge for Miami is not putting him in positions to do this time and time again.

Usually I think leaning into your legs a little bit more, not taking some of the sacks that he took, especially when you're outside of third downs. You know, you're in scoring territory. Don't make those kicks harder than they have to be. You know, live to fight another down if it's not third down. There was plenty of good, but the overall execution, I don't think you can give a particularly overall good grade with. And that's the best that I can give you now until I actually watch the tape and I see, okay, on this third down we ran. All hitches at the sticks and nobody got separation. So there was no where to go with the ball or anything like that. No, and that's all we can do right after the game like this guys. And you guys have the luxury of watching that game film, which is going to be great. But you know, I'll just add one thing on Malik and I think he, I don't want to say he panicked, but he definitely got fidgety back there in the face of that rush. And the Raiders had a lot of heat on him all day. I want to say that too. I mean, it wasn't just Max Crosby and to Zee's point when we did our show on Friday and the preview show like, Hey, when you, when you pay so much attention to a guy like Max Crosby, who by the way, still ended up with a one and a half sacks.

They gave him two, but then they took a half a sack away. You know, then a guy like Quitte Pay ends up with a couple of sacks. And the Kobe Dean gets one and you know, Fatakasi got in there for a half a one as well. So they got a lot of heat on Malik Willis. And I thought he got happy feed into Zee's point and held the ball a little too long. And you know, in the face of that kind of pressure, you just can't do those things, which leads me to H&Z 11 for 36 had what, I mean, what four catches for like 30 yards, something like that as well. But you know, I mean, I don't want to sit here and point fingers at the offensive line again, because they're, they're building and they're growing. But I don't know if it's fair to really evaluate H&Z today, because he didn't have much of a chance. No, you can't, a few of his rungs, he scored it in there, and he made some strong hard runs. He ran hard when he was called on. He just didn't get a lot of opportunities, because you know, the old line was not clicking today. So speak, you know, and it's still, it's a work in progress. Again, so it's kind of a new shuffled up old line.

And, you know, just have our early growing pains. You know, we're going to, it's going to be up and down all year. And hopefully by mid season, they start clicking a little bit better. And we're getting some better runs out of H&Z, you know, because the old line's playing better. But again, Max didn't show up. I thought until like, middle of third quarter. So for at least, you know, two and a half quarters, the, the old line was, you know, locking him down and he was a, a, a no show. I might wrote my notebook, where's Max, you know, at one point, because I didn't see him, you know, and then all of a sudden, you got that, that, that sack and then here he comes, you know, but we were down and raised, so now we're passing every down. And, and leaks, and leaks trying to make something I have by holding the ball longer. Of course, when your lead pass is just going to get there, when you have a quarterback holding the ball for the Kyle, say like three seconds, a rack, you're going to get there. You're going to get there a lot. And that's what happened. That's when it started pouring down on this, the sack per, per, per gade for the Raiders. They're going to keep seeing defenses like this Kyle taking H&A away until they can prove otherwise.

And, I mean, it just was tough to watch him today looking for room up there. He made some nice plays just to make a couple of plays, you know, something out of nothing. Well, I think the hard part is we mentioned kind of the game script, but I think what they run 26 plays in the first half, they run 50 plays overall. Like, that's really hard. Like to get into a rhythm, if you run 20 something plays in the first half of the game and your possessions, you go eight, eight snaps on the first possession. You go 31 yards, you get down into what kind of fringe territory. And then you incur the lay game penalty. You have an offensive holding. I want to see Brewer switches gloves to match whatever color jersey the other teams wear. So we don't get that really. First of all, I'm going to say, Stinky should be saying that. First of you can't wear the same color gloves as the jerseys. That's not allowed in NFL. You have to use your white or orange like he was wearing. You can't wear it black. No, you can't. Not as an offensive lineman unless they changed their rule. Because back in the day, you're not allowed to wear same color gloves

as the opposing jersey. Oh, man, there you go. See, and finally, I was going to read text them. I'm going to shut the hell up. Because that irritated me. I'm not an alignment for God's sakes, you know, but yeah, he made that comment. I'm like, okay, back back when you played, Stinky could do that. Right. Yeah. And you could also die. Guys, knees the whole game with those Alex Gibbs dirty offensive lines. They had and take people's. Yeah, that's why he that's why he's got 30 surgeries to get fall on his knees. Yeah, just died. People started now. Kyle killed over Brad and the super bowl just. I'm in the season. You know, play after play. But guys, I want to hit the receiving core real quick before we get to the defensive numbers. Kyle and Kyle, just please react to this. I'm just going to read the numbers. And when I'm done, I'll go right to you. Caleb Douglas, five for 94 18. Point eight average, seven targets, five catches, really, really great. And the first half encouraging for the rookie. Malik Washington, three for 53 17. Seven average on eight targets. Only three of them were completed.

H and four for 30. As we said, on five targets, Chris Bell, one for 25 on two targets. Dolchitz, really not much of a factor in the passing game. Two for 18 on two targets. And then Coleman and Kaz Merrick, they were targeted at total of three times. No catches for either one of those guys. Yeah, I don't know that that really surprises you from a breakdown perspective. The only three guys with more than two targets in this game are Caleb Douglas, Malik Washington and Devon H and right, and H and obviously being the player that he is. And who were the two guys for all training camp that you heard kind of build some momentum and had some chemistry with Malik Willis. It was Caleb Douglas and Malik Washington. So I think the balance there is challenging. We had at least one misfire where Malik was, Willis was kind of stepping up in the pocket and tried to hit Malik Washington on the move. And Malik Washington stops and Willis throws it like he's going to keep running. So, well, it's working progress is a phrase. We're going to say a lot over the next month, two months,

hopefully not three months. But for indefinite future, we're going to say the word work in progress a lot. And I think the connection in real live game reps for this entire group is work in progress. And I think Caleb Douglas deserves a lot of credit for being as efficient with his targets as what he was because he was about the only guy that was efficient with his targets in this game. That's a great way to put it. All right, Z coming right to you on the defense. Jacob Rodriguez, 14 tackles, five solo, none for a loss. Chris Johnson, 11 tackles, five solo, one for a loss. Jordan Brooks had nine, six solo. I'm not going to read everybody's totals. They had seven tackles for a loss. They had no sacks while the Raiders had five sacks. Also had seven tackles for loss. We talked about the defense, but anything in the numbers Z standing out to you defensively. I guess that early when you're having DBs, leading leaders of your tackles, that's not good. Again, your linebacker should be making a lot of plays. And then the D line should be stacking up them TFLs. And I know Zach had one late in the game.

You had a nice play. And so, you know, but you want, you need to see more of that. You need to come off blocks. You got to be, you know, move it a little bit more. Again, it seemed like guys were running by the ball carrier, but that's what the Raiders offense makes you do with the pitches and everything. It gets you run, sideline to sidelines, chasing blocks instead of playing blocks. And you get ran by them. That's, you know, the Shanahan, Kubiak, tree type thing. That's what they want you to do. And we fell into it. I thought up front. And that's why, you know, a lot of these, uh, Jentie was able to put his foot in the ground and get north and, you know, gave some yards. Kyle, anything you want to talk about here? I mean, we didn't touch much on Rodriguez. We can do that on the other side, but whatever you want to wrap the segment with all you. Let's just go to break. Let's go to break a minute early and that way, then we are friends over. Call she can get a little extra love here a little minute early. You're on the show and we'll finish. An incredible story of survival. I got you.

One of the most extraordinary on-screen bond you'll ever see. Only the greatest dog ever walked the earth. What a great pit. I'll give you home. Part of the beast. Lean theaters September 25th, ready PG-13. Maybe inappropriate for children under 13. You're muted. Unmute your microphone. Unmute your microphone. There we go. Okay. They were muted. I thought I couldn't hear them. I was going to ask these guys. No, we were unmuted during the break, and that's when people get in trouble. How many careers have ended for what they said during a break when they thought they were muted? But not that that would happen here. But you know what I'm saying. It's the squad show 27-13, the final 8-pennelty 61 yards, 5-sacks minus 34. Not much on the running game today. 74 yards, 36 for HN. They were two for 10, third down, one for three on the red zone, and they had a sequence in the third quarter where everything completely fell apart

when they pulled it within four points. Plus three times inside a Raiders territory in the second half didn't get any points out of those drives. Two great kick returns. One all the way down to the 10 yard line and an interception. Two interceptions today, by the way of the young guys in the secondary. Taft, the rookie who's probably still feeling good about Ohio State's collapse yesterday against his Texas long horns. And then of course, Trader with one as well. We've broken down the offense. We've broken down the defense. We've gone through the numbers. We hit the turning point. We have some hardware to give away in terms of players of the game and things like that. But before we do that, guys, do you have anything else that you want to add before we move on to that and start talking about some other things? Anything else you want to add about today's game? No. I'm waiting for you to say it. I just dig into a little bit deeper. Kyle, anything else? On your mind? This is the kind of script you cannot afford to play. You need to be better run in the ball. You need to be better up front on the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. And if you don't,

there will be a lot of games that feel like this throughout the course of this season. And if that's the case, then you will know where this team probably needs to invest the most when it's all said and done. But I'm very excited to get into the game tape. And obviously the overall body of work was not a particularly fulfilling experience to sit down and watch. But I'm very excited to get into tape and look at Jacob Rodriguez and Chris Johnson, Michael Taft and Dante Trader and Malik Willis and Caden Proctor and Caleb Douglas and Chris Bell and all these guys. Right? And start to get a feel for individually who did I feel like one their individual assignments more often than not? Because that's what we're doing. That's what we have to find out is who are the guys that can do the things that we want them to do and do it well. And if the overall unit is compromised and it's the same couple guys that keep not doing their job very well, then you know when we get to January, what kind of positions we need to be having conversations about. But I guarantee it's never as bad as it feels

and it's never as good as it feels. When you win 27 to 13, it's never as good as it feels when you go back and you watch tape me on. Yeah, I could have done that better. That guy could have done that better. We could have been better here. And when you lose 13 to 27, you feel like you lost by two touchdowns and you feel like offense defense special teams all left you with questions. And I'm like, wow, we might not win a game this year. Ray, I already saw a bunch of that already. It's week one. And you're going to get into some of these performances individually and you'll be like, okay, like I can build off of this. We can do more of that. I can ask more from this guy. We need to ask a glass of that guy. But we'll we'll go from there. And I'm excited to figure out all those answers. All right. Well, before we hand out the hardware, you guys both reminded me when you started talking about watching the tape. One more thing I want you both to hit. Z first and then Kyle. Great Jeff Hathley in his debut. How did how did a head coach do in game number one? Z just from what you saw watching it on TV? I think that did a good job. If I managed to game well and you was used into it,

like I say, through that challenge flag on the successful challenge, you know what I'm saying? And step on it right there. I mean, that's right there. It's big. And you know, when it came out of half, you know, the interview, you know, he said the right thing. What he said to the guys, you know, calm down and you're going to be riled up because there are bunch of young dudes out there. And, you know, I thought you did everything well. You know, it just it just got away from him because of the young talent and the mistakes and the penalties, you know, start building up. And then once you go down to a veteran team like that or a veteran quarterback team like that with a top tier pass rusher, it's hard. It's hard to get out of that hole. And you know, it it reared. It's ugly head, you know, it towards the end of the game. Kyle, your response to that? Yeah. Jeff Hathley has as many successful challenges as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins as Mike had his last two years as the head coach. What? Yes. And I saw somebody in the comments keeps mentioning, we want a challenge. We want a challenge.

We want a challenge. So you take the little victories where you can, right? So I thought it was a great call on the challenge flag. I'm sitting there saying, I think you got a toe down. Please throw the flag. And you see coming from the upper corner of the TV. And I'm like, yes, let's go. We threw a challenge flag. I think we have a chance to win the challenge on. I think the biggest question I probably had with Jeff was the first points they took when they kicked the field goal. And they had a short yardage opportunity. And they were kind of on the plus side of the field. And they were down 10-nothing. Was wondering if they were going to go for it. Right? And I don't blame, I think it was fourth and two when they kicked. Yeah. And I was like, you could go. In theory, you want to put your trust in your offensive line and run the ball. But I also don't mind at that point in the game taking the points and kicking the field goal to make it what was a one-score game at the time before the Raiders go down and get their second touchdown. Like, I don't blame him in any capacity, but it was just kind of the first decision to make

where I was curious which way he was going to go with it. And we saw he opted for points. And I'm sure a lot of that is what Z said when he comes out of half time, he's like, all right, like, you just settle in and play some ball now, right? Just relax. Like, we got it. And say, OK, we got points on the board. So everybody could just chill out and take a deep breath. And let's go out and try to play. Made it 14-6 at the time, right? The field goal? It was 10-3. And then they scored to make it 17-3. And then you kicked a field goal to make it 17-6 to close the half. But that was one of the things I said was that Wednesday or Friday, hoping to get a two-minute offense situation going. We got one to close the half. They got points. I thought that was great. I mean, the Raider scored like 102 left in the half. And then you take over and you got a timeout, two timeouts to work with. You call the timeout to stop them when they were in the red zone. And you go down and you get a big catch and run. And you get some points in a two-minute offense situation. Like, those are the little situational things that you can build off of that.

I was really glad that they had that opportunity and they executed well to close the half and get points. I'm glad they kicked the field goal there and that went for it. Because I know earlier they went for a short yards. They ran to the right, which shocked me. You think you go to the left with it. You got a little more size and you're better players. But they ran at Crosby and they got stopped. So I think half had that in the back of his head. And he just wanted to get points knowing that coming out of half, they were kicking off. So you don't want the Raiders to get a stop and have momentum. And then you come out and then who knows what happens. They came out and they threw a pick to us, which was great. But I see why half probably took the points just because you didn't want that momentum really swinging. Yeah, I agree. All right, let's get to some hardware, guys. We already talked about the turning point, right? Where Michael Taff gets the interception in the third quarter. Miami scores at 17-13. Game on, but they give up a huge kick return. Five plays, 50 yards, touchdown mix at 24-13. Miami gets excellent return field position.

After that, Willis throws an interception. Vegas drives down, kicks a field goal as 27-13. It felt like it was over at that point. But then Wright rips off a 79 return. The hard return, deep inside the Las Vegas territory. And Miami gets zero again. So a 17-13 football game got broken open right there, guys. And we don't have the element for this yet. We'll get it next week. But the X factor, under the radar, not one guy in particular, but anything under the radar. I'll start with the X factor. I want to say that Miami, two of 10 on third downs, and eight for 61 with the penalties, with the five sacks allowed those three things were my X factor because those were the three areas in which I think they lost this game, Z. I tell you, what lost it for them? Lack of them. No, X factor. Any type of an X factor could be, you know, under the radar that's something that people might not see that we saw. Oh, I like a return game with Jalen Wright. I thought his two returns for what, 106? That's impressive, you know,

for like one of your first times ever doing it. You know, there's some promise there. He, you know, sets up a good field position for the offense, which was struggling. You know, we punched it in. We talked about it earlier, but to me, that was like the X factor to help us, you know, try to win this game. Kyle. X factor in this game. Beyond what we've talked about, I think one thing that Jeff Hathley talked about in the post game pressure was that taunting penalty from Juju Brents, where you get to stop and Zane Anderson has awesome. I think Zane Anderson played a really good game today. I think penalties, Kyle. That's a great point. I mean, not just that penalty. They had some bad ones in some really, really bad spots too. Yeah. So obviously they are the more penalized team. They have eight for 60 something yards penalty wise. And we mentioned the Brents taunting, which I don't know about that. We'll find out that was that was brutal on the replay, right? So unless he said something.

Yeah. That's the only thing he said. He's might up, right? No, no. Hathley said that if they do determine that it is was a legitimate taunting penalty, he will be fined by the team for that penalty. So good. It gets as we talk about the accountability element of it. And we remember to talk about him, Paul and Ali Gordon aside with the unnecessary roughness penalty that he incurred in the preseason with Hathley. That's part of the assessment of the coach here where Brents gave you some up and down where he had a great play on the perimeter on an end around the to get you ahead of the down for second down in the possession for the Raiders. And then you have the taunting penalty and you gave it right back. They go down and they get points. Yeah. It was a backbreaker. But I mentioned it quickly. I think Zayn Anderson was the safety that didn't get a cast day. I think Zayn Anderson played a real football game from the TV copy. I can't wait to find out if that synopsis is correct with the film to see how he went

out and performed. But it certainly felt like he was a guy who kind of showed up in some spots and made the big playing coverage and had the big stick and was involved down in the box a little bit. He's a little bit of a bigger guy. He's one of a tweener safety linebacker type in college. So hopefully that's something where he's one of those guys. Maybe they get a chance and an opportunity here in Miami after being bogged down behind all those highly invested in safety in Green Bay and he can really get some stuff rolling. All right. We got to be quick getting through these guys. We're getting toward the end of the show here. It is time for this is the lock down player of the game. I mean, 23 for 102 six catches 45 yards to receiving touchdowns in 147 yards from screaming with rock. Bowers out guys. Vegas needed an offensive centerpiece and he was the best player on the field. He's my player of the game as far as a dolphin goes for me. It's Douglas with the five catches for 94 yards and we can pick the same players guys. It doesn't it doesn't matter. But we got like three minutes to get everything in.

So we got to go fast. Well, I refuse to pick a rater. So that's not going to happen. I'm going to take right for his kick returns. OK, I'm clear of the game. I'll go Caleb Douglas. I thought he really got into a groove there early and you wish maybe you'd got a little bit more volume later in the game, but we don't know how he's being used. So I'll go Caleb Douglas for five for 94. All right, real quick because we're not going to have time to hit the scoreboard. Kyle mentioned Josh Allen earlier in the Texans drop a game-winning interception. Drove me insane. Allen makes him pay the bills win. The jets on the road look really good against Tennessee. And that's one thing Dolphins hate to see. Thank God for Drake May blowing that Seattle game the other night. Otherwise, it'd be a sweep in the division. But before we get on out of here, guys, I want to get your final thoughts. We got a couple things left to do. I mean, we didn't hit who fudged up or a second guest. A lot of people fudge up in a game like this. And we've talked enough about that second guessing. We already broke down Jeff Hathley. So we don't have anything to second guest there. So why don't we get your final thoughts, Kyle? We got about a minute and a half for everything here.

Special teams, I got a big, big red ink on special teams. Or that you did not even give yourself a chance to win other than the kickoff return from Jalen Wright, where your kick coverage, your punt coverage, your kickoff work, all of that, I don't think you gave yourself a very strong chance in those phases to even play situationally and kind of control and play field position, which is part of when you want to run the ball and try to play defense as best you can. Field positions, a part of that and I didn't think that worked in their favorite today. Z run offensive defense run game. It's got to get better and it's got to improve for us to have a chance to be competitive in games, because that's what we need to do. I'm surprised this one's still left for me. I thought Z was going to take it, but the defensive line has got to show up. They just weren't there today. They've got to show up and that might not be fair to say it. But look, when the Raiders run for what they ran for and they scored the way they scored and Cousins doesn't get sacked. They got no pressure on them really.

So I think the defensive line has to play a whole heck of a lot better for Miami. But again, this is to be expected. We're going to get a lot of this this year with this team guys. Anything else real quick, Kyle? How about you tell us what you have coming up on the channel the next few days? Yeah, I'm going to do the tape tomorrow morning when it first drops at 7 a.m. So tomorrow morning, I will have a or tomorrow afternoon. I'll have a kind of a tape review show. We'll do some college football NFL draft response stuff early tomorrow morning for anybody who may be interested after watching week one. And we'll try to go something for everybody. Z, real quick in 30 seconds. Tell me what it is for a young team like this to not go home after a game like this and spend a week on the road together. That can't hurt anything, right? No, I mean, I've done it both ways. It's you know, it's it's either or. It is what it is. I will talk a lot more about that. That's great analysis. See, it is what I expect me to say. Hey, man, they get some time together.

They can watch more film. They don't have the distractions, but I mean, it's just I love your answers because I always get like blindsided. I'm expecting one thing and I get another from just done both best things about this watch show. I spent on the West Coast over Thanksgiving. And you know, we played Seattle and then we had to go play San Francisco. We stayed out. We stayed out there and over Thanksgiving week. Again, it is what it is. It's your job. You do what the coach wants. You do what the coach wants and they will play the Niners, which is, I mean, you never know in the NFL, right? It looks ominous right now with everything we saw today. Then you're going to play that Niners team and look what they just did to that high powered Rams offense. But good Lord. I mean, could you fly over there later? I mean, they're lucky they got there in time for kickoff to Rams. Why didn't you know the Niners got there a week earlier? Anyway, we have the squad show coming your way Wednesday at noon Eastern as well and we'll break it down because Kyle and Z will have had a chance to watch the game film by then. So you get spoiled as do I and I just sit back with my popcorn listening to these guys on Wednesday. So we will see you then with the squad show 27, 13, the final.

They play San Francisco again and look, the dolphins are all in one. This wasn't a game that screamed hopeless though. There were a lot of bright signs, you know, but it did scream young, undisciplined, unfinished. A lot of things to coach for Jeff Halfley and his new staff here with Miami. His first real test begins. And Miami turned today's mistakes into next week's growth. Thank you for watching your dolphin squad show on the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.
