We're talking everything from Dark Matter Season 2, episode 5 on an all-in-up episode of Unbind.
Starting now. Welcome in to Unbind's podcast to shows, movies and news you love to binge. I'm Alfredo Brown, joined by Jagger May. Matt Coffin, we're talking everything in this latest episode of Dark Matter. First, spoiler warning. This is your one and only spoiler warning for Dark Matter. There's two seasons out right now in a book, so catch up. All right, boys. The author of the book, who has been part of the show, has said this was going to be a divisive episode. Shocker, it is here on our podcast. There's who wants to start? Who wants to start this one? Let's start with Coff. Let's start with Coff. Let's start with the positive. I thought this was one of the most beautiful episodes of television I've ever seen. I'm putting it up there on an emotional scale of the long, long time from the last of us, the Bill and Frank episode. This obviously was a complete departure from the main plot of the season, but I think it worked really well as an emotional catharsis for, I don't know about you guys,
but I was wondering what happened to some of those Jason's that had met them at the box and said goodbye, basically. I know a few of them got murdered by Jason too, and that's what brought DARPA down upon the Desin world. But I was intrigued by the entire episode. It hit me right in the emotional field as the back that he literally lost everything, his wife and child, and then he was able to find a modicum of love and happiness in a different world than his own. I thought that was beautifully written. I thought it was amazingly shot, and it hit me right in the heart, and I enjoyed the hell out of it. I can see why I'd be polarizing, because I see people being, oh, it's slow, or it has nothing to do with the regular plot. But again, just like in the last of us, we got an entire episode apart from the rest of the show, and it gave us a little bit of an emotional reset, and I really appreciated it. And now, Jag will tell me why it's asked.
I will argue that the last of us gave us backstory on the setting of how tensions were. With random people out there. It gave us a look at the world, and it was early on to where we kind of needed something outside of Joel and Ellie to see what they would potentially face. Like, for instance, if they did know Frank, and wherever, like they would have died because of all the booby traps or something like that. Literally everything around that world is dangerous. There are so many plot lines and threads, and we know we're not only going to have one season of this show, what is the purpose? This gave us nothing to establish anything as far as setting, as far as understanding any world building. It was so far removed that we're never probably going to see this Joel again. It was just a waste of time, man, and it's emotionally manipulative for the... To me, this was equivalent of, like, Marley and me is not a good movie, a dog died, and it was sad.
Like, that is not good writing. You just made us watch dog videos, and then you said the dog died at the end, and then we were like, oh, and Wilson were like, wow, and then that's like the movie. That's the plot. That's not good writing. That's my big problem with this. So, I think both things can be true. I think this episode did not push anything forward. As a viewer of the series and the season, I was saying, I didn't want this this week. I didn't want this this week after so many questions from last week. But to what Koffe is saying, I think there is room for episodes that can give you emotion without necessarily having the need to advance the plot. And I can see why this was a beautiful episode. Absolutely not. Absolutely not, man. I'm sorry, dude. I mean, art is like, I got it. But moving forward, a plot, Jack. Like, if that's not what this kind of show do, I've been disappointed entirely too many times. You know what about the last of us is, it's a straight fucking forward plot.
You need to get this little girl from point A to point B. There is mother fucking zombies and horrible people along the way. That's the fucking plot line. We have a whole secret society of the Christian man topelists hunting down Jason's. We have multiple universes. We don't even know how expanding this is and how big the problem is. We've got three latins, three darmus. A fucking black play to talk about. And we only have one more season you're saying we have time. Alfredo. I'm, let's do it. See, I, this is where I disagree though. I'm, I get where you're coming from, Jack. This closes up all of the loose ends of the other Jason's, right? Where you can just, we don't need that. Did you question that? I do. I need the coffee. Yes. So me personally, I looked at them as the spare parts that I get in the IKEA package that I go, weird that we have so many leftover screws after I put this bed together. I'm going to jump in it and see if it still works. Normally, I would not care.
Hearing cough talk about it as, okay, that has now closed that chapter of the other Jason's, where we just never have to think about them again, because we can just all imagine. They all either found a bad timeline, went back to their timeline or found a good timeline. And no matter what, it just kind of ends in a certain way for them. We can get them out of the story. It, at least does that. I'm not saying that I fully enjoyed this episode because I didn't. But I can see the part of it where someone watches this and goes, damn, that was kind of beautiful. And it gave me a little more perspective into Jason, the alternate realities and what life could be for him. Now, let's get back to our regularly scheduled programming. Would I have preferred them to stick on plot and move that plot forward? Yeah, 100%. But I also have to imagine if the writer of the actual book was part of this. And he knows we have X amount of episodes left in this season. We have a full third season that's left over. I don't think that that writer was like, good thing I was able to get this bullshit happy sad episode in here. And then we'll get back to some plot later. Like there has to be a reason. And maybe I'm giving too much grace in that part. Yeah, you are. Because as I say, writers do shitty stuff all the time.
Like, like make episodes like this. You never like when there's an episode like this, though. That's not true. I like emotional episodes that move a plot for it. Man, like I say the same rule every fucking time. Did you provide insight on the character that I wanted? Yes. Did you provide depth? No, you did not. I do not care about this Jason. And here's the other thing that is just an absolute logical fallacy here or logical fallacy. Excuse me. They did not resolve any plot line of the Jason's. That was one Jason in an infinite plot line that found happiness. That answered no fucking question. That did not. And here's another problem. What it shows you though is that some sort of resolution is possible. And it does give us a background. For one, infinite. No for once. In infinite. Right. But that's a possibility for one. It's possibility for all of that. Yeah, that was something about the infinite timeline, the infinite multiverse. As we are now shown that there is a possibility of these Jason's that have been spawned inside the exactly.
They've been spawned inside the plot. I don't even think there's a happy ending. But it was he finally found love without Daniel and Charlie. It's what this does is encapsulate someone who was in real life, lost their family, and contemplated suicide and then was able to find happiness in some form after the fact. I get where you're upset with it not really touching the main plot. But what it does is give us that possibility that there are infinite. We know we've been told there are infinite possibilities. Now we get to see one. We get to see that there is a possibility. There is an existence for Jason. Any version of Jason without Daniela and Charlie. And he can find a modicum of happiness and fulfillment. And so they're very ending when he meets Daniela and then decides anyway to go back to Maria. I thought was the best part and the biggest indicator of what this episode is supposed to be about. And this is showing that there is a possibility.
There is Daniela and Charlie are not the end all be all for all Jason's. He has a there is room for them to find happiness without them. And I think that is a huge crux for this story because yes, we are for Jason. We don't care about for one Jason about. I care about it about like the thing is that every Jason that we meet outside of Jason to is Jason one to a degree. At some point in the box, he split from main Jason. So he is main Jason. So you should care about all of them if you care about one of them. Because they are all the same character just with the most minute change because of a choice they made in the box. And that's what's so fucking terrifying about this story is that infinite spawning realities mean there are versions of you right now that are doing something or trapped somewhere and they need help. And that's what this show showed is like Jason could have seen himself seen another version of himself on the street and just passed by him and left him be but he brought him into that
home and ties back to this Jason all these infinite Jason's that have spawned from the main Jason have the capacity for love outside of just themselves, which is what Jason too is missing. Jason to is too self centered. And so we get that this beautiful moment where he is bringing in other versions of himself to find love in this home. And again, I can see being upset that I didn't move for the plot but I think they did enough goodwill and hard work to make this a worthwhile episode. They didn't even follow the rule. He's not even following the rules of his own universe because you guys like it was beautiful that he brought in random Jason's pulling people from different universes is fucking bad. The first he didn't pull them in. They can't they also made the same choice to find a world that be loved in and they just ended up in the same world. Like, he didn't be like, okay, I didn't know because I want to wear their coming because the whole
time I'm like, okay, so you're doing what Jason too did but you're doing it in the name of what I'm doing charity to make me feel he wasn't creating a shooting orphanage by like grabbing them from different reality. He was finding other ones. And then like the third one at Christmas just shows up and you have no idea how he got there but the assumption is that they've kind of followed the same path and I think like for as much as I was as I was watching, I'll be honest. Like I wasn't loving the episode as I was watching. And then there were moments where like the mom says and I want to read it here when he's talking to her and she says I had 23 great years with your father 16 great years with you. Some people don't get a single year with anyone. And like it at least gives you a little bit of perspective to think a little bit more broadly beyond our one singular Jason and the one plot line that's there granted. Am I getting tired of at never ending emotionality of the episode and the never ending existential questions? A little bit man like it's grading on me a little bit but I can see how by the end of this episode
I went damn this was beautiful. It shows like what I even wrote here is there's a life living beyond what he has with Daniela and Charlie and cough at something that you said. I think that was the idea of this episode. Is it going to land for everybody? No. I don't think it was a perfect episode and I don't think it tugged on the emotional heartstrings as much as maybe like we were going to keep comparing it to the last of this episode. It didn't do that much for me but I can give it some clearance and some of the things that it didn't say okay you were successful in certain facets of it. I just didn't love the episode. I'll just say one last thing and shut up. I'm going to wait for the end of this season and then I'm going to wait for the end of the series. I told you so. I'm going to be I'm going to be a piece of shit because you guys 100% fall for this like stupid shit like to me this is absolute like bubble gum, fru-fu, bullshit, sugar garbage that is like actually back for the keys. The jingles. The keys that I'm falling for like a toddler. Yeah 100%. I'm sorry. Is that still
a lot of fun? Yes. Because right now you feel good like like we've done this for two fucking years because we do this for two years. We're like oh I love that emotional episode then the end of the season they're like well why didn't they answer any questions and then here's Jag again like you remember when they wasted our time on stupid shit and you were mad at me. The time was so many other things outside of this like if and I bitched about him too and you guys were like Jag your show at cordrable. You know. Well I mean shit if that's what we want then like we need to treat all these shows like they have a checklist of things to cross off and that's it like I mean they kind of do writing is very much a science as much as it is an art. Okay. I don't know the moment when he hugged himself at Christmas or when he comes home to the mom in her in her like hospital bed basically and then he like takes over the watch and they hug each other. Man don't tell me that that didn't you didn't feel something. Not man I felt like that was the number one Jason
moment I didn't give shit about. This Jason's could have been easy. I don't care about exactly. That shit was I don't know man when he hugged himself I was like wow he finally found acceptance and love for himself. I know I'm harsh but I have expectations stick like to me if if I was I can't think of his name right now if I was I think it's a couch or something. A couch there's a guy named Cal. Like Crouch. Like Crouch. Like Crouch. Yeah. If I was Blake Crouch's editor I'd be like oh man this is great. Rip that whole fucking chapter out and give it back to him like don't like get the fuck out of here. It's a better story without it. Just think about the last time we saw multiple Jason's meet each other right without Daniel and Charlie when buddy you got way too many strings we got too many we're spin in too many plates. No listen to what I'm saying. So the last time we saw multiple Jason's interact with each other without
Daniel and Charlie what were they doing? Fucking murdering each other. This episode we see multiple Jason's interact with each other and instead of trying to kill themselves or each other they're actually coming together and accepting and loving one another and that to me I think is such a powerful dichotomy to see that finally Jason has accepted not only his reality and fate but that there are other ones like him lost in the multiverse and if he can provide them with a little bit stability in a home then all the better and I think that's something that we were missing in season one is because of the elements of like chasing and trying to find his family it was all very much go go go think about only yourself now we have Jason's that can stop. It's been this one's what was like like a decade before his mom finally passed he's able to carve a lot literally carve a life out for himself. I get it I get it like some Jason's get to be happy I just well I'm here for a plot line about multiverses I don't care I'm less about some Jason's get to be happy and more about
like cough what you're saying is that he's finally helping other people we're actually seeing a different reality for this Jason and the other Jason's within that same reality and what I'm getting at here is like it wasn't just him helping other people it was obviously him helping himself like it was obviously showing self love it was being able to take that journey from being ready for suicide to the self love and something that we're seeing here obviously with this episode is that by the end of it he realizes that he can live life without Daniela that's what our Jason is going to have to do in this very next episode because Daniela left so now we get a little bit of that extra I don't know we want to call it a little extra oomph in the story that okay we've seen what another Jason does what happens when this one completely falls apart like do we even know what the spectrum of emotion or endings could be for that Jason now we're going to see him without Daniela and what it could lead to is that foreshadowing that this Jason might be so lonely that he's going to consider suicide like what what possibilities are there for him so it seems a little fluffy this episode for sure I'm not ready to say that there's absolutely no connection to
what we're going to be doing in the coming episodes cool well we're 17 minutes in what else was there to talk about this episode what else happened guys boy you're just you're you're happy today huh we got to see Superman's mom we did get Superman's mom we did get her and she's a bookstore owner now she always is like one in dunes I feel like it's small roles and I feel like she's like all right yeah as a westworld too yeah like dislike give her a more angelus seraphine seraphion seraphine seraphion that her let us know in the comments how would you pronounce it phonetically as you write it yeah because there's nothing else to discuss this episode I disagree I think this shows us like in a story about multiverse is obviously we've we've learned that the intent that you drive the box with your intentions with your subconscious and we saw that he wrote like I lost everything
I lost my son I lost my wife just take me to a world where I I have the ability to love and be loved and so I want to posit to you guys what would you write or what kind of world would you want to live in if you were alone you found yourself completely alone you have no no family you can you can fall back on your world is basically done and you have to find a new world like what are you looking for boy boy that's a that's a life that's a loaded existential question here hey yeah I don't hey man this why do they pay us the medium bucks dude I don't even know what I'm having for lunch today you're asking me what universe I'd exist in if everyone I loved was gone remember if the one where the dolphins are good oh god there is no universe where that's a possibility unfortunately they're assing every universe there we go but would you would you try to like go to a universe where you can you can be someone you can be something like special or would
you want to go to a world where we can kind of be like this Jason where you just find a quiet existence and find acceptance and love are you trying to like be a Tony Stark type where you go and invent something or become famous I would be Tony Stark that'd be my biggest weakness that's what I that's why I thought when Jason was pulling other random Jason's on my man niggas really can't help themselves you know like that's I don't know man like that's this is a really tough one like I don't that because I feel like every time you do something like this right you you risk something whether it's like time travel episodes or multiversal right like one thing I'll say that we did learn from this is that we learned that it's not about a character like the head things that's happening to Jason and Daniela is not about them being in the wrong reality for so long because we saw three other ones be there for what seemed like at least a decade potentially or however long it was and they weren't experiencing any kind of physical or mental issues so this
is something that is specific to our main characters at least and that was a big question we had last episode yeah the PTSD was that a glitch or was it just PTSD yeah we seem to got that answer um I don't know it's it's crazy to think about like this for an hour this is a guy that literally lost his family in a car accident that's the easiest way to think of it right and so like how do you move on how do you move past that do you allow yourself to open up to the possibility of getting hurt again in the future or do you close yourself off and I thought that's why it was so nice they hear him talk to his mom about like did you ever think about getting married again just think that didn't feel right you know she going back to where you sell for you she that's when we get the line of like I got 23 wonderful years with your father 16 with you like she is looking at that from the positive half half full yeah element instead of being like what was me I could have had more time um and you know I think that's something that's really nice and something to strive for is
allow yourself to open up to the possibility of being hurt I think it's a beautiful thing because if you're given the opportunity to get hurt that means you're giving yourself the opportunity to get loved do you think that's important do you think this episode opens up the possibility to us as an audience member that we need to A imagine that there is an ending where Jason does not have Daniel and Charlie or B ends up having to live out his days in a different reality and his reality no longer exists I think that last part is the most likely outcome um then you guys know how feel about it things never should end neatly I'm not saying it needs to be bleak but there is no I'm going to go back to be a teacher and my wife and son are going to be happy why is that for you why do you feel like there can't be any ending uh because it's mathematically improbable you're flipping a water bottle up in the air from the Empire State Building and it has to go through five helicopter blades all the way down and you want it to land capside up that's just not I don't know man it's a
story about a fucking Rubik's cube that travels to different realities I think we can we can bend the rules a little bit on how the ending works it's actually a story about Murphy's law and and it's very mathematical so like again if you want to stick to the rules of the show it is improbable like like quite quite literally statistically improbable and this is what I hate story I'll I'll fucking scream into the mic and you know I will it's actually a fatherhood like every episode every year I'll watch it all comes back to the end of my yes and I'm this episode was about mommy issues I'm okay with like I'm watching back rooms right now for the first time is it any good pay for so I'm not gonna lie my uh my family totally downplayed it it's not horrible I'm not done with it I'm into it's not very scary but like this is clearly about depression and loneliness that's been the theme of the whole movie and it's not necessarily super terrifying scary we have
some jump scare moments and some found footage moments but that was the expectation I do not like when you set up an expectation and you divert it and what I think is a bad faith way when you have other movies like upgrade that I tell people or watch when you do a divert towards the end that is shocking in a good way I'm okay with that you know this is fucking cheap man it's cheap it is a cheap trophy device that plays on your emotions what is it for I'll never forget talking about this this episode okay this episode yeah I was given another examples of where they're about other things like dark matter has been about a a problem created by someone else how do you solve that problem the emotional hole the emotional anchor was the family but the family wasn't the entire fucking plot line yeah the Rubik's cube is the plot like you say oh it's about a Rubik's cube there's like yeah like it's a Rubik's cube that with infinite possibilities and that is the entire web in the plot of the show that I wanted to watch this goes back to what we saw with
Paradise it's never about the bunker nigga it actually was for eight episodes what are you talking about so what you're saying Jaguiz there is a universe where you like this episode that's what I'm just not this one got his ass pew pew that's good I'll you have that one fucking got it that that was good kid we have a shit I had a question about about our Jason going forward and I totally lost it sorry dude now we're good we're good um cta we'll get it back to yes sure if you've been enjoying the conversation there's probably not much left of it but if you've been enjoying this so far please take a second to like this episode comment with your thoughts below if you're listening to Apple or Spotify leave a five star review it's the best way to help us out it's independent
content creators we're not just covering dark matter every week with positivity we're covering Ted Lasso on the audio side recovering lanterns every Monday as well so make sure you're with us for that okay so with this episode if we're gonna try to take anything what is it that you can take away from this episode that goes back to our main plot line Jaguiz before you say nothing I want you to just take a minute to think really hard go to go to go to go to go to go to go to first what can we take on this episode that you could actually implement or inject into our main plot line that you're saying okay I'm now going into that looking at this story a different way as an audience member. Good question um I think the biggest no honestly I think the biggest thing is our Jason is still terrified of running into other Jason's and his first reaction is is
literally fight or flight so yeah he's willing to kill himself repeatedly to try to escape that possibility that he has to interact with himself um what we saw in this episode is there are there are possibilities in there there are worlds where they can come together they can work together they can live together um so are we gonna see a turning point in our Jason's mentality of oh god they're all I'm after myself or is he gonna finally come to the realization like no matter how far we run or where we try to go there's a possibility I run into myself and instead of trying to kill myself I just I can allow it to happen there is room for more than one you think we're gonna get like a resident evil Jason where it's just cartwheeling through a reality like seven different Jason's all attached human centipedes style we thought like like a rat king of Jason's just bundled together I was like that Jack's like there is a universe there is the universe with a resident evil by versus real
yeah that that mean yeah actually that's like it seems like that universe is coming it's hard you know what I almost wonder if the way this episode kind of plays out too is like if there's not a way at this series ends in which Jason not only feels like the best thing he needs to do is to separate himself from Daniela and live without her or if there's even a reality where Charlie's not with them anymore and Charlie goes to live in that other reality because life is better there for him I hope that's the case because like this this I think this episode brings up a lot of questions of like self love and self preservation as well despite it looking like such a giving thing to other people it's the obvious looking in the mirror right like they even they even literally do that in this episode where homeless Jason is looking in the mirror and so it's kind of asking yourself okay what's best for me what's best for the people around me right and so I think we might get a little tropey but we might get to the point where Jason's like is my family
better off without me I'm wondering what it takes for us to get to that point but I think it's it's I think this episode sort of opens up more possibilities in a way for the writing to go even though yes it did slow down the plot in this episode I wonder if we're gonna get to a point where DARPA elocks the secrets of the box and is able to use them and it's tracking down Jason and we get a moment where Jason has to decide to sacrifice himself to save Daniela and Charlie have to allow them to keep running get away and then he likes stays behind so DARPA stops chasing or I don't know is that kibba there it feels it feels like there's going to be a self sacrifice moment at some point it does it does it does um because I think also too like what this does it kind of reminds you like this is something bigger than just him right at least for like I'll be honest like for the average audience member which I would definitely consider myself firmly in the middle of that average audience member thing um I'm looking at our Jason as the main character and be like boy I really hope we
get a happy ending there and jogs like I kind of hope everyone dies and you're you're muted no I hope it makes sense okay I hope it makes sense it makes sense that everybody dies no I hope it makes sense if everyone lives like that's my problem is just like yeah uh I want to know more about latent and why he's up to yeah I would be too much yeah I think it was what last episode we kind of we we sealed off the Ryan storyline like that's kind of that's done I feel like yeah I've seen like to an extent we've sort of sealed off the Ryan and to an extent the Amanda storyline a little bit like there's really not much left with her right because we got them we got what the Ryan the mechanic Ryan back to his world but then we saw Amanda and our Ryan kind of out of place yeah so they go back to the future world for the the nice world oh they do and then they got they got captured yeah okay you're right you're right we're not done with that's what it was this episode gave us a little bit of um actually I'm sorry Jack you didn't you didn't get to
answer our question of like what you can take forward into the plot from this episode negativity aside it kind of again I think it did you guys said what I was going to say that it gave us a look at a possibility where Jason can be happy but it's probably not lugging a lot of its family everywhere right when I think that's that even if anything might speak more volumes is that this was so unlikely and so unrealistic the three Jason's could be happy in this little Jason orphanage with his dying mother at all find love that you're just like happy ending seems so unrealistic now at this point that only in like the weirdest of realities did it work just saying boy it's it's uh it's there um kind of hates sometimes in Jags right because it's like what else do we get to talk off on this episode because I think everything now is just it's going forward right like um there's not anything else except I think it just makes you it makes you you get this kind of like backstory
with Jason where how is that backstory going to come into play because he hasn't talked about it much before right because we always knew he knew sign language but I didn't unless I missed that as to how he knew sign language very quick I think it was only in one episode yeah like last episodes it's like two lines we learned he knows sign language because of a mom and we knew his mom died when he was like a kid that was like they they that was it so this this does give us some like information on why he is the way he is because of you know his mom signing him lower the rings the fellowship as a kid and then when I got to the scary part she made him sign to her and like so again it just goes to show his compassion and the fact that this version of Jason is the most compassionate version of himself so if you look at Jason one and Jason too Jason to be the one the built the box that is the pinnacle of like Jason's success on a professional level Jason one is like the pinnacle of like familial success he's the most compassionate the most loving um he's the one that will a landed Daniela and then stayed with her through the trials and tribulations of
losing a child and raising a child so like those two are polar opposites when you look at like familial success and professional success and so every Jason we're going to interact with is going to be from that Jason one group so they're all going to be capable of that compassion and and I think that is the biggest difference between the Jason one and two is that compassion and that capability of showing compassion to others can I say there's one thing that we got here that's been true across every universe Matt the bartender deals with Jason's bullshit in every single reality just stressed out actually I would have wanted more on like a perspective for him that'd be a great episode that'd be a great one yeah like a but it's just him dealing with all the shitty characters I want the I want the episode of the gun store owner as like all the multiple Jason's come through and he's like one of them fainted what I walked in yeah like I almost want that more than this stray Jason's where you're just like like you like what what the fuck did I just see today
like you're the normal gun person owner and you actually think it's like man should we be just giving guns out willy-dilly I feel like that works so well and you do it almost like in the same light as what's like the magic shop in obsession where they're giving out the one wish willow and like oh yeah kind of snarky and shitty at the same time like that just make great just hand an outshot guns left and right so good oh man uh well boys I think we covered everything from this episode and I know Jack can't wait to get to the next one let's get some plot baby don't hate on me for being right I'm not I'm not hating I'm not hating I don't for you this episode was Nathan for you was like I hope you're hungry for nothing yeah kind of was what it was this episode made Jagger's heart like shrink three sizes not the opposite you had a reverse purchase I don't like being emotionally manipulated it's fair it's fair I do I enjoy that out of it
