About this episode

“Over the weekend, what we're expecting is obviously people will be able to celebrate.”From the transcript
A Clare garda superintendent says there's no group in society more likely to be found driving under the influence as roads policing operations for the St Patrick's Weekend get underway. Gardaí began monitoring routes across the county at 7am on Thursday and will have checkpoints in place until the same time on Wednesday. Over this weekend last year, 2,650 drivers were detected for speeding offences, with 214 arrests taking place, while two people lost their lives and eight received serious or life-threatening injuries in collisions. Superintendent with the Clare-Tipperary Garda Division Eddie Golden has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons everyone should take responsibility for their own actions while encouraging those around them to make the right decisions.

Over the weekend, what we're expecting is obviously people will be able to celebrate. It's a really nice time for families to go out, enjoy the parades, enjoy the celebrations, but from a road safety point of view, it's a key time that over the last number of years, we've had a number of tragedies and fatalities on the roads and look, it must be now a time where everybody does the right thing as we've mentioned time and time again on the roads of County Claire and make sure that we keep everybody safe. So this weekend, you know, a drink and drug driving still remain among the leading causes of death and serious injury on the roads, and our message is really very simple, you know, don't be under the influence of an intoxicant and drive. The risk is never worth it. And unfortunately, looking at some of the surveys that were carried out recently, you know, there is a high prevalence of drink and drug driving still happening. I think it's fair to say, Eddie, that unfortunately, this period of the year, these few days around St. Patrick's Day have traditionally been associated with these types of

collisions that you're referring to there and accidents on the road due to drink and drug driving. Are we seeing any positive trend in the last number of years on that or is the problem as prevalent as it's ever been? Well, unfortunately, from on Garrison Corners point of view, like we have analyzed the figures of drivers that are arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, drugs in 2025. You know, the stack reality is that, you know, 86% were male, 14% were female, and in terms of age of the drivers, 29% were aged between 21 and 30, 29% between 21 and 40, 7% were under 21, 20% 40 to 50, 10% 51 to 60, and 5% were over 61. What really that says is there is no particular age. It seems to be every age category are still taking a risk with it. It's across the board and there the people that are putting everybody else at risk. So, you know, family friends, take responsibility for your own actions, particularly when it comes to road safety.

Don't let somebody drive a vehicle that are under the influence even if it's only one or two points or whatever a unit staff had.
