12:43And as it is late September There's a lot going on it is one of the best times of year to be a sports fan at any level Of course as we we remind you here on good sports. There's great stuff happening all year round in Saskatoon But there are a couple different points in the year where things are overlapping certain seasons are wrapping up Other ones are getting going and it's just this amazing smorgasbord And that's what's going on right now So a lot to get to we're gonna try to get through it as as quickly and efficiently but as informatively as possible Let's start with football. Shall we the Husky football team? They have already hit the midpoint of the Canada West regular season four games down four games to go and they're on a roll 1-3 in a row after a season opening loss in Winnipeg and just coming off a very big win over their provincial rivals down in Regina defeating the Regina Rams 38 to 31 On September the 26th at Mozex Stadium or that third straight victory And also the only head-to-head meeting of the regular season between the Huskies and the Rams

13:45So very important for the standings potentially and a tiebreaker if it comes to that When the playoffs roll around it was 17 all at the half and then the dogs rolled up 21 third quarter points to take a massive lead They ended up having to hang on though because the Rams got 14 unanswered to close the game in the fourth quarter But still fell seven points short and anti-Namadruds come back story continues to just be one of the great feel good stories not only here in Saskatoon but across Saskatchewan and football in general 28 of 37 Was the number one quarterback for the Huskies 369 yards to touchdown passes both the Dawson Lenny He did throw one interception in the game Lenny had a total of seven catches for 108 yards and those two TDs and defensively Couple of big performances Nathan Casimir was named Canada West defensive player of the week for his performance Conor Tyson a linebacker also had a real good game seven total tackles a sack and a forced humble The Rams actually had the edge in time of possession by seven full minutes

14:48They ran 13 more offensive plays But the Huskies offense just so much more efficient greater amount of yards per play and just more ruthless and their big playability certainly was a major difference as well Although they were able to just sort of pick apart the Rams defense in this particular instance So the Huskies now three and one on the year and in a tie for top spot with the UBC thunderbirds the Rams fall to two and two Have the lost two in a row after a two and oh start and once you know it But the Huskies and the T-birds are meeting this weekend here in Saskatoon It's on October 3rd that Saturday night seven o'clock under the lightsick Griffith stadium as the culmination of the second annual football day in Saskatoon Which is going to be a great day on campus. There's going to be flag football on the grass fields throughout the uh the morning and afternoon There's a women's flag game that's going to take place at Griffiths earlier in the afternoon a high school game Between Mount Royal and Edie Fienne and all of that leading up to the Huskies and Thunderbirds in a first place showdown

15:54Heading into the Thanksgiving weekend by yeah thanks giving sorry just around the corner believe it or not So big big battle for the dogs and of course rally alley will be in full effect as well next to Griffiths If you haven't been to a game. Well, there's only been one home game so far So they've got three more to come starting with this one against the Thunderbirds at least in the regular season and should be a real good one Two three and one teams going head to head both in the top 10 the Huskies this week now number five in the nation So that's what's going on with the Huskies football team. How about the hilltops? Nuh Not so good for the toppers as they dropped their third game of the season Uh as uh as not very Common to see the hilltops with three losses in any season although they did lose three games in 2022. That was the last time that happened It was the Regina Thunder so At U sports the Saskatoon team had the upper hand on the Regina team But it was the other way around and the prairie football conference over the weekend with the Thunder sweeping of the season series with a 19 to 6 victory over the toppers right here

17:01In Saskatoon a game that featured exactly zero touchdowns. That's right Neither team found the end zone The Thunder got six field goals and a single and the hilltops had just two field goals. So The Thunder do sweep the season series however Griffin Sandert this 10 of 19 the hilltops quarterback 10 of 19 for just 80 yards Regina's quarterback Jaden Zilianka was 19 of 25 for 225 both teams had a hundred yard rusher Corbin Ebbin went 21 carries for 122 for Saskatoon Regina's Peter Borsch 33 carries 196 yards Uh, but it was their kicker hairy case who was the star of the show with those six Field goals and with that victory the Thunder also clinch first place in the prairie football conference with a 7 and 0 record They wrap up the regular season against the Calgary holds this weekend the hilltops They're four and three and they need to win their final game to officially secure second place Heading into the postseason They will host the Winnipeg rifles

18:04It's in up Sunday game at smf field october 4th 1 o'clock kickoff or that one so uh the hilltops A bit of a bumpy road so far of course they've also lost a game to the ebbin wildcats this season Well, we've seen them turn it on and the playoffs as before so we'll see if they can do it again this year But right now the Thunder certainly looking like They've got the upper hand in the provincial rivalry and and heading into the playoffs this year But still one regular season game to go and it's an important one or the hilltops on Sunday So that's where things stand with the toppers. All right. Let's move off the gridiron and onto the ice like I said It's an overlapping time of year hockey season is underway as football season is in the the heat of things Saskatoon blades Uh played their home opener this past weekend It was actually a second weekend of action or the western hockey league But the weekend actually began with a road win or the bridge city bunch up in prince albert So that's like almost double point anytime you can beat the raiders at the art house or center

19:06Especially the fact that they're the defending western hockey league champions a three to win or the blades on September 25th Kazdan mathies david levin dowski and Jack cash kowski each had goals in that victory and the Returning goalton or the flyers to draft pick philadelphia flyers draft pick Barton so holovic I'm probably butchering that so holovets excuse me 28 saves For that win. So the blade certainly happy to have an n-chale drafted goalie With them this year again And then they consolidated that victory with a win in their home opener On the Saturday September 26th of five to win once again over the raiders Hunter laying led the way with two goals one of them on the power play Hayden harsani 11 dowski again and mathies also scoring and So holovets with 26 saves for that win and i'm gonna get better at saying his name as we go I think that's i think that's how it's pronounced I think that's how i heard less lasricks say it so you can take that one to the bank

20:09So the blades after a tough opening weekend on the road where they lost twice I'll be at once and over time now sitting two one and one Through their first four games and they will be back in action friday in their only game of the weekend They're hosting the red deer rebels. That's game two of a four game Homestand for the blade so just getting warmed up But nice to get a couple wins You certainly don't want to go too long without that first one of the season and now the blades already have two and five points in all through their first Or games so that's what's going on with the blades is they get things going let's stay with hockey and talk about the warm and Wolverine Who are just game in game out here early in the year making new franchise history It is season two for the sjhl club out in warmin and They are hitting milestone after milestone in what has been a nice start to the season They lost their opening game but haven't lost since now on a four game win streak Uh, which we'll get back to in a second here, but they played twice over the weekend

21:10Both on the road and one both those games first a five four win in nippa win over The hawks on October 25th Five different goal scores all notched their second goal of the year in that one patent allard friend of the show He's been on the show uh, so your shite Zekiel lambar oh and parks and Ethan dundas all got the goals and loop broodin Who is back in the sj after playing uh in the junior b league that prairie junior hockey league last year winning a title with the sascatune westlies 20-year-old goalie back in the sj former portland winter hawks drap pick and he's been tremendous He's started and played every game uh, so far for the wolverines He made 43 saves and that win over nippa win last year The hawks were the only team that the wolverines didn't get a win against they only won 14 games last season But they sprinkled it around against their 11 opponents nippa win was the lone exception and boy was it ever they got out scored 27 to two and their four games against nippa And last year so another sign that they've turned the page in year two With that five four win not only against the hawks, but in their arena app at the cage

22:12Which is a tough place to play and that was a very entertaining affair that extended their win streak to three games Which is was a new franchise record the longest streak they had last year was two So another new milestone old being above 500 for that matter is the first time in franchise history They were never above the 500 mark last season and then they made it for the row with another milestone victory in north battle for it on the sunday October or this at october September 27th Their first ever shut out victory in franchise history for nothing over the battle ford's north stars Riley rich hold in who just played his hundredth shl game Couple games prior at two goals and one assist Owen parks train Marcus the moreman native also scoring and brewn and once again was tremendous 41 saves in that win Of the shut out the historic one the first ever for warm and and by the way brewn and also a warm and native So early on the vibes have been great around the wolverines. They are four and one

23:14They are sitting as we record this episode first overall very early in this Saskatchewan junior hockey league standings and Layers from warm and are playing starring roles not only with brewn and in net but train Marcus who At the end of the weekend was leading the entire league in scoring with nine points through those five games So just some great stories all around with the wolverines who have Got in a lot bigger especially on the blue line, which has almost entirely been overhauled But they're also a little bit older. They're still a little bit on the younger side But a lot of their players have now got at least a year of junior a hockey experience under their belt whether that's in the sj Or in Alberta or Manitoba or elsewhere And so that has translated into a team that just has been playing with more confidence They've erased three multi goal deficits already this season So good vibes around the wolverines And so I highly encourage you to take in again. They will be at home this Friday night taking on the melford Mustangs in the first half of a home in home. It'll be a seven o'clock puck drop October second

24:17At the warm and home center communeplex just a quick drive out little longer Given the construction right now in north end of Saskatchewan But still worth the drive And then they're in melford at the northern lights arena on October 3rd as a 730 start for that one wolverines Defending the den with some real ferocity Early on this season. All right, we're gonna stay on the ice very quickly though talk a little triple a U18 triple a hockey underway Let's just go down the line here where we can start on the male side because we've got of course two Saskatoon teams Plus the warm and wild cats to talk about Saskatoon contacts They opened up their season for the couple of games last weekend against the sdvand bears at merlis belscher place Bicked up a two one shootout victory in the first one Kade kahovits I'm sorry if I'm saying that incorrectly He had the shootout winner in round six of the shootout the only goal the shootout for that victory in the season opener And then the next day a five to win for the contacts over the bears on this of November 26th Joshua Kohler called on Stevenson each had a goal and an assist in that one the contacts now are going to play a home and home against the Regina pack Canadians

25:25First game of that one is in Saskatoon on Saturday October 3rd and then they are in Regina cooperators arena On wednesday october 7th sass to blazers did not play on opening weekend So they're yet to open up their season that will happen this coming weekend as they'll take on the tisdale trojans at rod hamarena here in saskatoon That's on october 2nd then they will host the warm and wild cats on sunday the fourth and then they're They've got tisdale in town again on october the eight All those games at home So busy week as the blazers of course I've yet to play their first regular season game so they'll play three in the next week here Here on home ice and then those warm and wild cats They open the season with they played one game last weekend as a five three loss Uh In Regina against the pat Canadians on september 26th Declan Borthwick had two goals for the wild cats in the defeat

26:26They are playing actually a game uh actually they played a game uh Just before we recorded this episode. I didn't update the score on that so apologies They played battle for it as well Uh, and I were neglected to update the score on that but they will be As I majest mentioned they will be then The visiting team at rod hamarena on sunday october 4th Against the saskatoon blazers so there's your uh male triple a uh update and of course We've got the saskatoon stars as well on the female side They opened their campaign with two home games against the Regina rebels And it was the rebels coming out on top and both those contests five to one in the opener on september 26th Every berry had the lone stars goal in that one and berry scored again in the second game Which was a or two loss to the rebels on september 27th and mccala drabac also had a goal for saskatoon in that one So o and two start for the stars Who will then now host the battle ford sharks actually that game will be done by the time this episode comes out

27:27But it's happening the night uh the evening after we record this episode And then the first road games for the stars they'll head down to will cocks to take on the Notre Dame hounds October 3rd and Orth so there's your Minor triple hockey the 18 you triple a hockey update for you as they are just getting underway exciting time for puck Right now Nothing but opportunities laying ahead for all these teams Meet the redboard dragonberry imagizer. It's one of the many new drinks out now Who knew ice cold drinks could be so fire Try them all only at McDonald's Let's go to some soccer here before we wrap up what's going on and Back to the huskies where we started off talking husky football coming back around the talk husky soccer was a busy weekend For both husky teams playing twice three of those games were at home Let's start with the women who swept a home at home weekend against their arch rivals the Regina cougars

28:32A three-nil victory in Regina on the Friday night September 25th Cheyenne layman scored a penalty goal Isabel Ashant scored a absolute banger of a highlight real beauty From just on the left side of the box just on the edge with her rocket of a right foot that she's got and Dory Sutherland scored an Olympico directly off of a corner So three goals three very different ways for the huskies and that three-nil win elicit paidly Wasn't particularly busy, but she did make two stops to earn her fourth shut out of the season That was just the warm-up as it turned out for the huskies because the women came home then on the Sunday September 27th and Destroyed the cougars seven to one was the final in that one And it was five nil at the half it was over about 20 minutes in to be perfectly honest with you Easyly chance again Was a use sports all rookie team selection last year in her second year she just picking up where she left off

29:35She scored twice knotted in a header and then got a bit of a bounces across went off a Regina player and in The captain and our guests on our last episode nami nwin friend of the show she scored twice And one of those goals also was off a corner, but hit a Regina player So not quite an Olympic go, but she'll be pleased that the first one was on purpose Of course, she was joking about that with us here She'd only had one goal as a husky prior to this season. She's got four now this year. So Good sports bump right there for nami nwin score and two goals Immediately after being on the show how about that Danny layman and Cassidy Vieira and Yana van Nekirk with her first goal as a husky also tallied van Nekirk is a rookie as Jairson Veronica Into the show emptied the bench put all almost all the subs on right at the half and They still carried on and and van Nekirk got her first career use sports goal To help salt away that seven to one victory. So important a couple wins for the huskies who dropped both their games the previous weekend at home to

30:42Calgary and Mount Royal So they need to just pick up as many points as they can to keep pace with those two and in hopes of catching at least one of them to earn a home playoff date And those are the teams they're facing this coming weekend on the road. So big big opportunity now Hopefully they're full of confidence after those big wins They're sitting five two and one third in the prairie division They'll be at Mount Royal October third The kugas currently two points up on the huskies for second And then the dinos who are five points up in first They'll be visiting them on October 4th. So a back-to-back on the road for the huskies of note they beat both those teams On the road in preseason play so even though they lost to them at home a couple of weeks ago They have beaten them this year. So that's good news or the huskies if they can you know Maybe use some of that to their advantage As for the men bit of a more mixed result weekend for the huskies men As they started the weekend with a Rilling and just absolutely uplifting victory over the Victoria vikes who came to town ranked number eight in the country

31:47And the huskies got the opening goal from Dante Molina in the eleventh minute vikes tied it right before the half But teo hind Canada west all rookie team selection last year and I'm I've already said it on a couple times this season He's going to be at all star selection this year in Canada west He scored in the 81st to break that tie and lift the huskies to the win And jaren slepinski the fifth year goalkeeper was terrific He made some real quality stops among his seven to earn the victory two on win over victoria So the vibes real were good And then a bit of a weird one on the sunday The 27th as the huskies lost four to two to the Thompson rivers wolf pack in The proverbial seesaw battle wolf pack jumped out to a two-neil lead huskies looked kind of out of sorts for the first 30 minutes And then seem to flip a switch in the final 15 of the first half and scored twice to tie it up

32:47With hind adding another already has already has five on the season and then a j calado Right before the end of the half his first ever huskies goal in either leave his 30 second game. He's a fourth year player um They tied it and everyone's like okay here come the huskies And then the wolf pack came out the second half and scored two more quick ones like 15 minutes into the second half And this time the huskies couldn't pull back the two gold deficits So there were some positives for sure But also ultimately kind of disappointing after beating a top 10 team the day before Uh, T.R.U a good side as well. They came in second in the pressific division as they entered that game But uh, I think the huskies will will tell you they let one get away at least at least a point if not three points get away Against T.R.U. So a one-in-one weekend the men's huskies soccer team now sits three and four on the season hard me Yes, that is correct. Re and four on the season. I put it backwards here on my notes Uh, they are fifth in the prairie division standing so that's one spot out of a playoff earth But they have half a season to go of course one more weekend though of inter divisional play and it's on the road

33:53This past weekend It's it felt like because it was specific teams and prairie division teams all facing each other in this inter divisional segment of the schedule and like All of the teams they're chasing were playing kind of like weaker Pacific teams and so the results just didn't really fall in their favor The only team that really dropped any points was the one that's behind them in the McEwen Griffins We haven't won a game all season So the hope is this weekend that flips a little bit coming up for them even though they're going on the road They're going to take on winless ubc Okanagan uh in calona on october third And then they are in Langley the next night So a tough travel weekend you go to go from calona down to Langley for a back to back Against the Trinity western Spartans who uh as i as i come to you are re six and one on the season so uh Hopefully the huskies can pick up some points in those two matches they Should definitely i mean you think they could win the first one against the no one 18 but Travel can be weird things can happen you never know

34:56And then you're hoping for a few other results to maybe flip Last weekend and they can maybe pick up some points on on the teams are chasing especially the alberta golden bears For the team that is immediately ahead of them in that fourth spot in the prairie division.
