Heal Thy Self with Dr. G — Your Beef Liver Capsules Don’t Work - Use this Instead. Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
The healthiest supplement on the internet might be quietly poisoning you and you ain't going to taste it and you're not going to feel it until the damage is already being done. You started taking beef organ capsules because hundreds of voices online and sestually told you that this is the best thing to do. Beef liver is nature's perfect vitamin. It's clean. It's ancestral. It's finally the way to fix your energy and your health. Don't get me wrong. I am all about food first, but there's a problem here. So today, three things. Why this perfect supplement can quietly be overdosing you. The organ that is actually worth eating and how much of it. And the one number that tells you that you already had too much of this supplement. And I'm going to give this one to you at the end. I'm Dr. Gonzalez. I'm a naturopathic and functional doctor. This whole channel is about what to actually take. What dose? How to spot a scam before it costs you money. We're calling out brands. It's support you. We're calling out brands. It don't support you. We're doing our best job. This page is all about advocacy. Before we move on, this is education, this ain't medical advice.
Talk to your doctor, especially before stopping or starting anything. And if you're pregnant, here's a myth. I need to kill first. You've been sold the idea that beef liver is a multivitamin. So more of it is better. And you take it every single day and you've been doing it for a while. But that is the one idea that gets people hurt because beef liver is not a multivitamin. A multivitamin gives you a small amount of a lot of things. Beef liver kind of does the opposite. It gives you a huge dose of a few things and almost nothing of the rest. Beef liver is not a multivitamin. It's a mega dose. And the dose is the whole problem. We remember that line. The doses in beef liver are a problem. So this whole beef liver movement has all backwards. They're selling you a reason to take this every single day when in reality, it's backwards. The biggest problem with beef liver supplements is a mega dose of vitamin A. Beef liver is not nature's multivitamin. Here's the thing about vitamin A that changes almost everything. Most vitamins like vitamin C, you take too much, you pee it out, you're done for the day.
Vitamin A does not work like that. It is fat, soluble, meaning your body stores it in your own liver and stacks it for months on end. And beef liver is one of the most concentrated sources of vitamin A on the planet. That's a good thing sometimes. That's a good thing if you're really low and need to replete vitamin A. That's not a good thing if you're consuming this every single day. And there isn't exact ceiling. A number your intake is not supposed to cross. And a single serving of liver can blow right past that. So some of you are taking beef liver supplements and tripling quadrupling the amount of vitamin A that you need in a day. And it gets worse because vitamin A is not even the only thing that it builds up on. Beef liver is also loaded with copper. It's also loaded with iron. And both can quietly accumulate in the wrong person. Not everyone tolerates iron the same way. There's genetic issues where you can build up iron in the system and that could be detrimental to your health. And the same goes with copper. And on top of that, if the animal wasn't raised in a clean environment, if it wasn't taking care of, if junk was collecting and building up, that's a problem.
So before I move on, I want you to know in the show notes, I created a full guide of the best multivitamin companies in the industry. Also featured in the guide is multivitamin companies that you may be taking, but you need to be staying away from. If you are taking organ capsules daily, this section is for you now. The upper limit for vitamin A, the amount that the national nutrition board says an adult should not go over day after day is about 3000 micrograms. A single three out serving of beef liver has more than 6000 micrograms. That's one serving. And it's already double the daily ceiling. And many people don't even stop at the liver stuff. They can take a multivitamin and many of those carry vitamin A too. They may take cod liver oil, which has pure concentrated vitamin A. And when you're getting too much vitamin A, it's not like the tank just overflows and you know immediately, because it's not dramatic. At first, there's headaches, dry skin, your bones begin to thin over time.
Your liver really starts to struggle. That's the organ's supposed to help you out begins to struggle. And if you're pregnant, this is really important because too much vitamin A, there's a clear connection to birth defects. So the ceiling is about 3000 micrograms a day, one serving of liver doubles that. And if you're taking a multivitamin or cod liver oil or other things, that's problematic. I'm not here to scare you off the organ meat. I'm not here to scare you off of beef liver supplements, but I want you to do it the right way. And this is what I tell my patients, right? Organ meat is a food. Beef liver supplements are a supplement, not daily. Treat it like that. If you're buying a capsule of beef liver, nature's multivitamin supplement, right? That's how they market it. You want to make sure it's third party tested. You want to make sure it has a dose that you can see the liver is the filter organ for the animal that you're eating. It needs to be properly raised and fed. Walk away from any proprietary blends that just say, quote unquote, grass fed and just hides the dose. And if you're doing it for vitamin A, you can do it in a safer way.
Vitamin A is in sweet potatoes. It's in carrots. It's in leafy greens. And it comes in a form that your body converts only as much as it really needs. And really beef liver isn't even nature's vitamin. The closest thing to nature's vitamin is oysters. Their pack was zinc and B12 and copper and selenium. And it's almost impossible to overdo it, right? If you're just looking for a good multivitamin, skip the beef liver or skip the organ meat capsules, skip the raw stuff and just come back to a good old classic multivitamin. And if you remember a few months ago, I did a full multivitamin review. Go back and watch it. Not all multivitamins are created equal. Not all of them have the same third party purity testing. Not all of them have the same absorbable forms. A lot of companies use cheap forms. And today, duh, duh, duh, duh, duh, I'm going to tell you some of my favorite multivitamin brands from my last show. If you want a multivitamin, here are the ones that I trust, Mary Ruth's. They handed over their full third party testing without hesitation. Their heavy metals were well under the strictest contaminant limits in the country. That's a great one. Just ingredients, another fantastic multivitamin.
They test the finished capsules through independent lab testing. It's confirming the potency and they're even checking if the vitamins are still active by the expiration date. A lot of companies don't do that. Life extension has a lab report on every single batch, super thorough. They test on their finished product as well. They use an active form of folate and B12 that your body can actually use. And natural factors uses pharmaceutical level testing that screens hundreds of contaminants down to the trace amounts. Look, the rule never changes across the board on supplements. If a company is not willing to show you third party testing, skip it. And some of you need to be skipping the organ trend entirely. If you're pregnant, if you have too much iron in your blood, if you have a medical condition that stores too much iron or copper, if you're already taking a multivitamin, cod liver oil, adding a daily liver supplement can be a real risk. Not a health hack. And even if it's done right, organ meat is not a multivitamin because it's missing multiple things that your body needs. It has almost no vitamin C, no real calcium, very little vitamin E. It has loud instruments, but not a whole orchestra. Make sure you're eating all the colors of the rainbow and fruits and vegetables, complementing it with whatever high protein foods that you eat, plant based or animal. And know that you should go for a traditional multivitamin over a beef liver multivitamin capsule.
There you have it, beef liver, mega dose, not a multivitamin, missing a lot of essential nutrients in there. If you eat organ meats, eat them sparingly, eat all the colors of the rainbow and fruits and vegetables and understand their good quality multivitamin products out there that can do right by you and give you the exact right doses that your body needs following the guidelines. Thank you for listening. Share this rate, review. Love you all.
