He's a P1, I'll give him some credit. He's probably listening right now. Hey, young son, keep up the great work.
But he caught on to the little Russell thing, and he heard I'm from the Bay when we were given away our Bay F-C tickets, which we're doing right now, and then they stole it for the morning show. What the heck, man? What do they think they are? It's different when you're given away tickets. That's what I'm saying. Yeah. You're like conditioning people to call in to give them tickets, and then young Tony's going to play it, and people are like, oh, what do I win? And then Curly has to be the bad guy, and he's like, what are you talking about? You don't win anything. We're not like that. We're winners. We give things away so you can be winners to March 14, nine days from now, beautiful Saturday at PayPal Park, Bay F-C, taken on Denver Summit FC, and all you got to do is call, if you are lucky, number 10, and we know what 10 means out on the pitch, that means you're Lionel Messi's, all right? You have a chance to be the winner. Get there for free, get the poppy cape, go out there and celebrate incredible environment there, out at PayPal for quakes and Bay F-C games, and you can do it. Just call right now, 415-896-5627, low-rustle equals winning.
I'm telling you, it's going to be like a Pavlovian reflex. I'm seeing this ridiculous series on social media when I waste my time now, by the way. There's this wife that is conditioning her husband to be scared of the word lemon. So every day she'll shout lemon and throw a new object, and it will be like a chair, a barbecue, a razor scooter, like, I just started sending you these when I come up on my page, Walter. Anyway, I digress, good luck to all the people, I'll give you ideas, and I hope that you can, yeah, don't do it. We got glass protecting us, all right? I can see what you're doing back there, and good luck to everybody out there. I hope that you can be a winner, and we got one more day of giving this away tomorrow. By the way, JD, while we were finishing up with Matt Thomas and getting into a little bit of NBA headlines, Jason Tatum has been cleared to make his debut. So I think the bets are officially on. Who plays more at the home stretch of the season? Jason Tatum or Christopps for Zingas? At this point, you'd have to take Jason Tatum, because I would imagine he's going to be managed to not play in back-to-backs, but, I mean, what, 20-ish games to go?
I mean, I would think Jason Tatum is probably going to play for sure in 15 or 16 of those games. And at this point, with Porzinga, I'll be on the trip, but not playing in the game tonight, the opportunities for him are dwindling, and the Warriors still do have a bunch of back-to-backs coming up here, including coming off of this road trip. They play in Utah Monday, and then have Chicago back-to-back. They have two back-to-backs on their long six-game road trip. They have the first two games, or New York and Washington. Then they go to Boston, and then they got a back-to-back to treat Atlanta, and they also have another back-to-back coming up, a home back-to-back to begin April in the final home stretch of the year before a home Sacramento back-to-back. So, I mean, count that up, I mean, that's what, one, two, three, four, five still remaining sets of back-to-backs for the Warriors in 21 games. So, do the math on that, Porzinga says, you know, I think if he could get to double
digits at this point, it would, you know, almost be considered a miracle given the way this thing is played out here over the last couple of weeks. Well, and you said five back-to-backs remaining, you'd have to think that if Steph Curry does come back before the season's over, he's probably not going to be playing a lot of back-to-backs. I mean, this is the kind of injury in a runner's knee, and I know they're being cautious with it, but it's not just like, oh, it's done. The pain's gone, and now you're good to just go full-rain. They're probably going to ease him back into it as well. So, one of those second-end of a back-to-backs, March 21st, that's the Camingo Revenge game. Man, you think we'll get Steph and Camingo present for that one? Camingo, by the way, did not play last night. You did not? You did not? After the first three games with Atlanta, again, the two against Washington, the one against Portland, he showed up on the injury report, and it was a late ad. It was a day of yesterday, as the Hawks won again, even without him in Milwaukee last night on ESPN, but yeah, he popped up with the same knee inflammation that he had had at different
times with the Warriors, and again, we obviously wish Jonathan Camingo the best, but the reality for JK in his career, and I think I was the first person to really note this as a somewhat of a flag. He's been injury prone throughout the course of his career in his own way, and basically every time he's been about to possibly have a breakout, he winds up unavailable, and we'll see it sounds like it's probably going to be a short-term thing for him and the Hawks, and he's definitely gotten off to a great start with them. But even when he has played well, his own ability to stay on the floor has been a problem with the Warriors, and we'll see, he didn't play immediately either, going back to when the trade was made. I mean, made his debut within the last week to 10 days, so not a huge deal, and obviously we're not going to get into the minutiae of breaking down every Jonathan Camingo game,
but as notable as the first three games he actually played where it should also be a quick note, I'm done talking about it now, that he was an unhealthy scratch due to the knee inflammation last night. 808KNBR is the number to join the conversation, got some good activity in the YouTube chat today as well. We are streaming on Twitch. We've got the app. We've got the website. We've got Dan, the man, Dan and San Jose are lucky contest winner today. San Jose, man. That's a nice little home game for you, San Jose making it easy, PayPal Park, and joy it. BFC ticket winner of the day. We are going to talk to Mike Silver coming up in about 25 minutes or so, wrote a big piece on Max Crosby, so we'll certainly get into all of that. Where is he end up going to go? We also had a text from 818 on the Golden State Lumberidge showroom text line about Matt Iberfluss, says hiring Iberfluss gives Kyle a former head coach to lean on, gives Raheem Morris, a former DC to lean on, and someone with more of a linebacker's background,
which is key on this defense. And again, as you talk about the minutiae of every Jonathan Kaminga game, we don't need to get into the deep of every single coaching transaction and who is in. We know who the voices are that run this building with the 49ers, but I think there's value in general of bringing in someone with experience. And yes, you can point to the fact that his last two stops were not successful whatsoever between being the head coach of the Chicago Bears and the defense of coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys. But I think that we saw when Nick Sorenson, for example, was running the defense that there was just a level of simplicity to it that teams were able to catch on with. Even if you did have Fred Warner and Nick Bosa out there at certain points, Sala obviously was like a next level coming back for his second stint. And then you went and got a guy who was done coordinating at a high level. And frankly, I would have liked to have seen just from a football standpoint him get another shot with Atlanta because of how strong they ended the season. Arthur Blank made up his mind. They moved on.
They got Kevin Stofansky. And I think that Kyle Shanahan capitalized on a really good opportunity to hire someone. He has a lot of respect for and one of his good friends in this game. Yeah, I like both hires. Honestly, yeah, I mean, to me, the Eber Fluce higher as we talked about in the last segment with, you know, in that specific role is is a quality higher. Again, at this point, given the way things played out, you wouldn't want him to be your defensive coordinator and I and equally to bring it to Rahim Morris who you were just talking about. I mean, I think it's, I think it is a great hire. And now you can look statistically at some of the defenses that he's had and make the case that some of those teams have not been under one. You know what, you know what, his defense was really good at last year, Craig. There's one thing specifically they were really good at last year. Maybe not the best overall defense, but they sack the freaking quarterback last year. So and that's something obviously that the 49ers, I think they were number two in the
league in sacks. Were they number two in the league? They're top five. I know for sure in the league in terms of sacks. So that's going to be something that you're going to want to be able to bring over. So I like both of those hires in their in their respective roles. You know, again, you had to you had to get somebody that was going to move the needle. I think to a greater extent than Gus Bradley and Kyle Shanahan was able to find that guy. We'll go ahead, take a quick break. Come on back, get ready to catch up with Mike Silver. Got a little silver linings playlist for you at the end of the show going to be ripping the tunes and I don't know if Papa actually likes the band or not for what I'm going to go with today. Papa and Silver now continues life from the KNB Arcasino Matrix progressive jackpot studios Casino Matrix progressive jackpotter here. Where are you? Just drop in. Please play responsibly 1-800-Gamber. Alright, Papa and Silver with JD continues. Wow, we got some old games coming up on the screen right now. I'm watching Mike Evans who just caught a long touchdown. It's the six and nine Panthers going against the seven and eight Buccaneers. That's week 17 of 2022 and NFL Network soon a whole free agent showcase right now. So this would be their Mike Evans game. You know, a thousand yards every single season until this last one when he had the broken collarbone, he had the hamstring, and Tampa Bay really just crumbled after that red hot start. But I'm telling you JD, I'm going to stick with it.
I would love, love, love to see a Mike Evans. I don't know how I feel about some of those other guys like Aromio dobs. And that's the offensive side of the ball, the defensive side of the ball. And I just looked it up to confirm exactly what you laid out. The team that had the most sacks in the entire NFL this last year was the Denver Broncos with 68 coming in at second place with 11 fewer. So man, Denver was everybody's good at getting to the quarterback as anybody. But it was Rahim Morris's Atlanta Falcon sacked the quarterback 57 times. Now I know personnel is a big part of this. And for the 49ers, they might draft some guys. They could even sign somebody. Now there's rumblings about what's going to happen with tray Hendrix and yes, you will get Nick Bosa back. But they had what was it 20 sacks in the regular season, I mean, it felt like like two all the time. And then in the playoffs, they managed to get a couple. They had the one on Jalen Hertz to set up the Eric Kendrick's knock in the ball away. Like they did do just enough on defense to continue winning games, but getting to the
quarterback has to be the thing that they improve on the most because they were so far in a way at the bottom of the league in that regard. Not just bottom of playoff teams, bottom of any team, including teams like the New York Jetsu, by the way, zero interceptions in 2026. How was that part or 2025? How is that possible? Yeah, it seems impossible, obviously there. And yeah, Nick Bosa coming back, of course, is going to help. But the 49ers need to need to continue to add, not only on the outside, but obviously on the interior as well. I think they need as much as they do need another outside pass rusher. I think they need somebody that can cave things in up the middle and get to the quarterback in that vein. So I'm going to be interested to see how the 49ers look to attack for agency as it relates to that as well. Well, to that point, that's kind of why I'm really intrigued by a name like a John Franklin Myers, someone who is a vet. He has been durable played 16 games, started 15 in the regular season last year was on that
great Denver defense. And he can muck it up in the interior in a way that the 49ers don't necessarily have. And maybe it gives some time for Alfred Collins or CJ West to come along a little bit more or if they're going to be sharing snaps alongside someone like a Franklin Myers that I really like that as we know very well. I mean, we've seen it a million times. You play alongside a great, then an individual stats is going to look all the better. Like don't say foul or junior was the number three overall pick at one point and then was taken by the Jaguars. I think towards ACL before he even played a snap in the NFL, then he bounced around the league. And when he was on the Rams, he had great seasons. But guess what, when you got three different offensive linemen at a time, focusing on Aaron Donald, that's going to help you a lot. So it's all about just like Bosa being back, Mike Helbee in back, maybe someone like a John Franklin Myers to apply some interior pressure. That could go a long way for these younger guys who did show some good flashes last year. But I think we want to see a little bit more of a complete season out of them. Yeah, definitely need to see that.
And again, I'm also fascinated to look at other areas in which the 49ers target that maybe are going a little bit under the radar as far as really both sides of the ball. But safety is the one position that I think, like I'm just unsure, like I don't see the 49ers necessarily signing a linebacker in free agency. I do think they're going to look at pass rush and interior defensive line. I think that's obviously going to be an area where they look to move in the draft. But could the 49ers be? I know we were talking even even corner with Rick Woolen, you know, so I think it's going to be interesting. Like where do they go in terms of of safety as it relates to as it relates to kind of building out this roster? Well, just looking up and down the list from the athletic here are the safeties listed as free agents. You got Kevin Byer from the Bears, he's the top ranked one at 19 overall. Cam Curl from the Rams, Brian Cook from the chiefs. We mentioned Kobe Bryant from the Seahawks, Jalen Thompson of the Arizona Cardinals,
Dequan Briscoe from the Bears. So they got a couple of safety question marks here, entering free agency, knit cross from the Colts, a low high Gilman from the Ravens, Reed Blankenship from the Eagles who got burned on the Skyrizzy play that Papa deemed it the Skyrizzy Skybang reverse pass. And then you go down the list a little bit, some more veterans there. I think safety's kind of one of those positions though that you can get some value in the draft on some later around certainly. And although I don't necessarily know what the larger NFL outlook is for someone like Marquis Siegel or Malik Mustafa, two very similar players, John Lynch mentioned the swarm stat when he was on with Murphy Marcus at one point during the season. Those are guys that when they measure the swarm in terms of getting to the ball and tracking it right off of the pass, they did it faster than any other prospect in there. That said, I don't really know where they're at in terms of their ability to cover, whereas Giair Brown was the one I trusted a little bit more as your center fielder like player
who can make plays from hashmark to hashmark and knock balls away playing deep. Yeah, and I go back to something that we got into yesterday with Charles Davis, which is the fact that this is a draft where you can get safeties. And so I think maybe that becomes as we start to kind of pencil different ways that the 49ers can look to attack the roster building. I think you all, you kind of go through it, I don't know if you do this, but I find myself doing this. I go through position by position and I just say, okay, is it more apt to be free agent and maybe you're right down to name or two or five or ten depending upon what position it is or is it more going to be a matter of the draft and then you start to maybe dig into some potential names. I haven't gotten to that point yet as far as names, I make a point to wait before I actually put too many names down to let it get at least to April, at least get inside a month.
So we are still a couple of weeks away from being a month away, but I feel like safety is probably a position that you're more apt to address in the draft than free agency. Well, and looking at the list on free agent season, that's a little bit more around the corner. I do also look at the shifting of staff and players wanting to come to a familiar spot and a familiar coach because we know the Niners love their guys like there's been a lot of cross pollination in the last decade between the jets and the 49ers and the dolphins with Miami Mike, who now is no longer the coach there. So you did say you were thinking maybe not signing a linebacker, but I was also looking at the Atlanta Falcons free agents, particularly on the defense of side of the ball because of the connection to Raheem Morris, Hayden Ellis is a linebacker who's still out there and then old friend Leonard Floyd, if they could get him at a really low price, you wonder would he come back in the mix?
I don't love it, but it's the kind of thing you do kind of watch at this stage of free agency. Now you do, you definitely look at some of the connections and players that could be a potential target as it relates to that. So we'll see again, I'm not ruling anything out completely in terms of specific positions and the 49ers signing, but I would be surprised just going back to the safety spot if they attacked it with one of the top, you know, five, six names that are on the overall list. A three one on the Golden State Lumber and showroom text line, do you think they could turn Nick Martin into a hybrid linebacker safety that seems to be in vogue? I mean, two very, very different positions. So at the NFL level, I'd say probably not. I am curious about Nick Martin though, because he showed some flashes last year, got some run because of a lot of the injuries. But really, what I'm more curious about with the linebackers and I probably mentioned
this an annoying amount of times on the show, ever since you and I sat across from Fred Warner at a training camp last at the end of last summer, that was the year two to three leap. And he talked about D winters and how there is a mental factor of playing in the NFL when you go from not just trying to keep up physically, but as Tim Ryan has said to me many times in the football hour, if you are a step behind mentally, you're two steps behind physically. So D winters, I think had a really nice flashes this year. It's no surprise that he was a much better player alongside Fred Warner. I do wonder with Fred being back as the guy who can command that defense. And as our guy Papa loves to know, where's the green dot? I just wonder how much it can help that level of the defense when you know the defensive lines getting some reinforcements and the most important one of all in Bosa. You know that Fred Warner is going to be the guy commanding it all and seeing it all. The secondaries where I have a little bit more doubts where you got a pressure, the quarterback better no matter what, what is your secondary ultimate looking to look like? That's the biggest test for him Morris right now.
I think it definitely will be because I think everybody would assume that they're going to upgrade significantly on the on the defensive line. I would say defensive line, but I think that's going to be addressed positionally and we'll have to see how, you know, what they do as far as the secondary goes. I wanted to go back just quickly to linebacker because it's interesting because I think you know they have some names of guys that they like, which is why I'm less inclined to believe and look, D Winters is not a perfect player, but they still have Nick Martin who they spent a third round pick on last year. They still have Tatum Bethune who wound up being somebody that was, you know, playing a big role, getting thrown in, obviously when Fred Warner went down. So I just think they have a couple of young guys that I get the impression they've been pretty high on. So I just wonder what the inclination would be to look to add maybe another young player to that mix other than the fact that obviously, you know, Fred Warner is going to be coming
off a significant injury and he is starting to get a little bit older and at some point you have to believe that you're going to draft a guy that can be, you know, not only a major factor next to Fred Warner, but eventually maybe take over for Fred Warner because I don't think at this point that we don't know on Nick Martin. So it may be unfair, but like I just don't at this stage see anybody among that group as far as the young linebackers that the 49ers have that projects to be, you know, star capable, maybe a little premature to make that statement, but early on I think you could, you could make that case. All right. Anyway, KNBR is our number to join the conversation. You can do so more in the final 50 minutes of our show, but coming up, we've got the man who I love to bug during the off season actually haven't talked to ball with him that much although he did just have a nice week at the NFL combine and dropped a big old article on Max Crosby and the Raiders and what he thinks should be the impending divorce between
the two sides. Mike Silver of the athletic joins us when we come back on the sports leader. KNBR be sports leader. Papa and Silver now continues life from the KNBR casino matrix progressive jackpot studios casino matrix progressive jackpotter here. Where are you? Just drop in. Please play responsibly one eight hundred gambler. All right. Little over an hour to go here on this Thursday trying to make sense of all the possibilities and avenues of NFL free agency, maybe some trades. We had the combine go down and we've got the athletics Mike silver on top of all of that Michael. So good to have you on. I'm glad we got to bother you during the off season. I have no idea how I was able to book you, but I worked my magic. So life is good. Yeah. You have your ways, but yeah, I'm doing great. How are you guys doing? Yeah, we're we're doing well and we are moving through the week. This is a very interesting time of the sports calendar where a lot of it is more of a transitional
phase rather than trying to process action in real time. But we do have some trades going DJ Moore is going to the bills. So maybe the Niners have some doors open at wide receiver. I don't know what it all means. Let's start with the thing you just wrote a huge column about though. That is Max Crosby. Was there a tipping point with Crosby or is it just the Raiders constant turnover and change finally adding up where he's like, I don't want to start over for the fifth time. No, there was definitely a tipping point and it coincided with them wanting to shut him down at the end of the season. They were getting ready to play the Giants really important game if you're trying to get the number one draft. Absolutely. Absolutely. They were, but it wasn't like they called him in and they were like, hey, Max, you know, your knees not great. You really see, you know, like it wasn't like a cool conversation. It was more, I'm told, just, just conveyed to him as though, hey, man, we're tanking. You're done and he didn't take it well.
I think it was in conjunction with things that have been going on there. And look, he may have still arrived at the conclusion that he wanted not to play for his sixth head coach and his eighth season with the Raiders, but definitely that galvanized him and kind of underscored some of the frustration he'd been feeling. As talented as he is, Mike, what do you think the best situation for him would be? And I know we can get into what the Raiders command in terms of a trade and all of that. You have to find a match in order to make a trade. There's a lot of teams that want him for obvious reasons. What do you think the best situation for Max, though, would be? Yeah, look, JD, I look at a team like the Ravens, you know, who they're always good. The defense is such a huge part of that organizational DNA. They've had guys who are kind of extreme characters over the years. You know, you're Steve Smith and your Ed Reads and Terrell Sugg, et cetera, et cetera.
And it seems to me that, you know, that would be a good fit, for example, you know, you think about a team like the Patriots that overachieved and did so well, but, you know, really doesn't have that elite edge presence right now. That would obviously change things a lot for them. Mike Ravel, the guy that had a lot of players, you know, especially veterans kind of get excited about playing for. So, you know, those are the types of teams that pop out at me, but I think it's more who wouldn't be play for, you know, like if the Cleveland Browns were like, we want to pair him with a Miles Garrett and make our defense even better. That might be like, hey, man, I think I might retire a response. So there seem to be more than half a dozen teams that fit into the former category that are in. I think the issue is the Raiders are asking for that. Michael Parsons type package and on paper, you would say that's a little ambitious.
All right. So the reason I brought up DJ Moore and that trade is that they acquired a second round pick Chicago. So could it seem like the Bears get in the mix and make sense here? I mean, also the other side of that is would Mark Davis be judicious enough to trade another Raiders star to Chicago. Yeah, right. I'll never forget the, you know, the early days of the Khalil back. He was just blowing things up. And I think I wrote a thing in my lead. I can't believe it. Maybe it was NFL.com. It was NFL.com. And it was John Groot in finding out that Khalil Matt got another strip sack. I was covering a Raider game and Groot and it's an early game that bears the flight early. Groot in his office get ready to come out of the field. And he's like, oh my God, it happened again. Khalil back to, you know, another strip sack. So yeah, I don't think, you know, people, people are so funny when they get caught up and like, well, they made that trade with the Bears 10 years ago and like eight regimes ago.
They wouldn't possibly do it like, no, of course they would. Even like the Mark Davis would never trade with the 49ers. Like, I don't think that's true. Like, you know, Alan Eddie had a pretty good relationship, you know, obviously they had a geographical rivalry. But, you know, they don't even have that people. I just think fans get way, others in Ben Johnson, who is the, the lone exception. The people in our world don't take these rivalries as seriously as the fans do, except for Ben Johnson with the Packers. He clearly does. Yes. And, and then, and then backed it up as well, which is, which is fascinating. Barely, it barely, he's still at it. No, after the season, he's still talking. It's just, it is, it is, you know, it is funny because I know that look really well. I was like, he understands none of it. He just, it, it upsets him.
He definitely wants to, you know, get back at Ben Johnson and win games and stuff. And he's definitely not looking forward to like having a meal with him anytime soon and by any time soon, I mean, like eight lifetimes. But, no, he doesn't get it. He's just like, what? Like, why is he doing this? And I can't tell you exactly why, but it does spice up the rivalry. So, who do you think was happiest about Matt LaFloor's extension? Was it Matt LaFloor, Matt LaFloor's wife and children or Ben Johnson? I don't know, but I know, like, if the Cardinals play the Bears, now it just got spiked here because blood is thicker than a wand. So, it'll be fun. Well, it's, it's also interesting too. I mean, don't you think part of it is just the, the fact that the Bears have been so dismal through, I mean, most of my life against the Packer specifically and Brett Farve
and Aaron Rodgers just absolutely tormented them for the better part of 30 years. No, I don't understand why he would make it personal with Matt LaFloor. Like, endure yourself to that fan base against the, you know, the franchise that has just dominated you for, again, it's just 30 years old in a tire lifetime. Right, but like, I mean, you know, me, like, I love the Cal Stamper rivalry, I think college is spicier, but like, I don't want Tosh to like go after to beat a pigeon personally. Like, I just want to win the game, you know, like Mark, Mark Madison became Cal's basketball coach. Like, Sharman Smith became Cal's basketball coach and it's happened the other way too. Big change at some point, and we live in this little world of sports where like everybody interacts. So like, I don't know, as a fan, I guess there've been times where like, I would have been really happy if a Cal coach was personally attacking a Stanford coach, but not many.
Like, you know, Mike Montgomery became Cal's coach. The first thing I said to Mike Montgomery, by the way, when I saw him after he took the Cal job was, hey, where am I seven foot twins? You know, like, yeah, it happened twice with them. And, you know, we were, we were very, very, very happy to get him. And we're stoked with Madison and Sharman. And I don't think Stanford was a stoked to get Troy Taylor, but I get great. No, I don't think they were and we saw that obviously played out. Mike, I want to go back to Crosby a little bit as far as just the potential for the 49ers to be a team involved. You squashed the notion that the Raiders wouldn't deal them to the Niners because it's the Raiders and the Niners, but how realistic an option given the competition for Crosby, would you figure the 49ers to be in play here? Well, I think if you're the 49ers, wouldn't you rather make the giant move for AJ Brown,
for example, I don't know, you've got both, so you're paying him. And yeah, if you had two of those dudes, it would be unbelievable for sure. And Max Crosby is one of the best players in the league, so I wouldn't say don't do it. But for that type of price, and I think it'll be a little less than that, but let's say a one plus, right, or a one plus and a player, they just have other needs. Like, I just, you know, you paid Brock Purdy, George Kiddles coming off in Achilles, Christians, you know, still at an elite level. But like, don't you have to get Brock Purdy some dudes, and Pierce All has been heard a lot. I Euclid is a disaster, Jennings is a pretty agent. Like, I'm thinking like go get some elite pass catchers, especially, you know, a number one wide receiver. It's not going to mix over here on the Uma guest line.
So you were all over the Minnesota quarterback situation last off season right now, they're over the cat. And it's out there that there's interest in Kyler Murray to maybe Matt Jones. Does that tell you that they are really turned off by the JJ McCarthy situation? If they got a rookie quarterback, they got a lot of guys to pay right now. And I know they're going to release some people at the start of the new year, but I'm thinking this just seems like the combination of Sam Donald having won the Super Bowl and McCarthy struggles. Even though Kevin O'Connell was just coach of the year in 2024, all of a sudden, there's pressure on Minnesota to figure this thing out. Yeah, well, I kind of got into this one McCarthy was getting ready to come back last season. And I basically said that they are, you know, barring a McCarthy push at the end of the year that looks a lot different, but, you know, they really need a time machine and, you know, we've been through the Rogers part and you mentioned Darnold. Daniel Jones was a big part of that.
And Kevin O'Connell aggressively pursued him to get him on the practice squad in 2024. Really thought that when they were losing Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones would be the answer to pair with JJ McCarthy and really was frustrated when he left. So, you know, on paper, you would go, well, now they have a chance to go get Daniel Jones. It would cost a lot and he's coming off an injury, obviously, which makes it tougher, but he is a transition tag free agent. So you could pay him and hope that the Colts don't match. I don't think that's going to happen, though. I think if you could get a guy who's been a pro-bola and Kyler Murray, you can get him for the minimum because the Cardinals will pay the rest of that salary this year, which was guaranteed. And you don't have to give up any draft compensation. That seems to be like the Kevin O'Connell type of alternative.
You know, Mac Jones, you got to trade probably a lot, probably more than you think you should have to because the 49ers really value him as they should. You know, Daniel Jones, even if you could get the Colts not to match, would cost a ton and it's coming up an injury. I think if you're Kevin O'Connell, you're looking harder at Kyler's saying, you know, I'm a quarterback whisperer. This gets got a lot of talent. He's maybe got, you know, something to prove now and, you know, it could be pretty exciting. So I don't think Jason McCarthy will be the starting quarterback there. I'm not even sure he will be there next year, but I do think they'll try to get more than one guy. Maybe if you get Kyler Murray, you take a flyer on an Anthony Richardson now. That would shock me if Anthony Richardson ends up making it in the NFL. We're talking about a guy with like a 48% pass or last time, I mean, we're not talking
about. Yeah. We just got to get him up a little like you got to get him. He's not even in the stratosphere of, I mean, like for Anthony Richardson to have a chance to make it in the NFL, you would need a time machine that takes you back to like the 50s, maybe at 48% Mike, I just, I got to ask you as it relates to the 49ers again, just what you think the best allocation of their resources would be in terms of free agency. Is it, is it wide receiver? Is it, is it something else like where, where would you think that they would want to spend if they were going to spend, you know, right off the bat when everything kind of comes out as it will here over the weekend and leading to Monday? Yeah. That's a great question, right, because you're going to overpay if it's free agency. You just have to be, you have to be at peace with that. It's just part of doing business in free agency and you don't want to hinge everything
on that, on free agency, ideally, because of that. But teams like the Titans that have like 80 million of cap rooms, they're going to go out and overpay for a bunch of guys and look, it is what it is. But, you know, I think you're just looking for a combination of value and need and it's with the 49ers, to me, I keep coming back to receiver, tight end. And then, you know, and then you wonder about offensive line. And then the other thing JDI wonder is, is there a calculus where you're like Trent Williams is old and expensive? We had a protracted contract to speed two years ago. Is there a scenario where they're going? Maybe we try to find another left tackle in free agency for cheaper, because it's tough to count on doing it in the draft where they're drafting, you know, to have them plug
and play. So, I don't think, I think the best move is to figure it out with Trent Williams personally, but that's something that I wonder about too. Could this be an off season where the Rams go back to being ultra aggressive? We saw the Trent McDuffy trade yesterday. We've seen what it's like when they are going all in and the meme of F then picks and then we also saw how they re-tooled by capitalizing on those draft picks and holding on to them. So, I do wonder with the fact of Matthew Stafford coming and off an MVP season, you don't know how much longer he's going to play. Something like they were so, so, so close to representing the NFC and likely winning the Super Bowl if they could have won that game in Seattle. Do you think we see an ultra aggressive Rams run office this off season? Yeah, I think what Greg is saying, Mike, is, would they trade 13 for Max Crosby? Yeah, and yes, to all of it, right? I think the Rams are doing it and I think they should because of Stafford and because
you don't know how much more you're going to get from Stafford because they've proven to themselves that they can re-tool with young guys and take a step back and those picks hit by and large, you know, verse and young and Puka, et cetera. So, they're in a great spot. One thing they may want to do is get a new part returner just throwing that out there. I mean, they might be still celebrating the after-globe parade. Had that debacle not happened in the NFC championship game, though that conflict kind of way, I'll wreak wool and kind of gave back those points. But yeah, you know, listen, they were so close because there's another scenario where they win that Thursday night game, you know, and the weird two-point conversion, if that doesn't get overturned and all that, then they are the number one seed that are hosting any Seahawks or whoever in the NFC championship game in that alternate universe.
And they might have, they might have done it that way too. But yeah, I do think the Rams doesn't mean necessarily they trade the 13th pick, but I think they are open for business to try to win in 2026 as they should be because they were really close. They have an over a quarterback and honestly, they should be cocky about their ability to blow all the picks, spend all the money and just go, you know what, we'll just do it again and retool because they did it once, which is really hard to do. I mean, it's eerily similar, right? I mean, you look at the setup and the Super Bowl next year being at SoFi and obviously they won the last one there and I mean, there is some eerie similarities there. I want to pick your brain a little bit on Seattle. We were discussing it earlier in the show how they've got a lot of decisions they have to make, a lot of talented players, but they've got some guys that, you know, probably aren't going to be there, you know, moving forward.
Do you see it that way? And do you see Seattle, you know, how do you see them kind of combating what they're going to lose with what they, what they still have? Yeah, they're really interesting, you know, John Schneider is really, really good at this. I think it's a great position to be in, right? Like, hey, man, we just won the Super Bowl. We're going to have to make some hard choices. Worst case, we don't win the Super Bowl again. You know, they have a quarterback who I think may be ascending in Darnell, which is really cool for them. You look at a guy like Rashid Shaheed, who that trade acquisition was a game changer this season and, you know, played a, you know, you go back to that Thursday that game, his club return, turn that game around, you know, probably the play of the regular season. So, you know, he was a big part of that and yet they could lose him. Kenny Walker coming off the Super Bowl MVP performance, you know, in a different time.
Well, Davis would have obviously just taken him off the market right away with a massive deal. But, you know, he could be gone and then, you know, they're obviously some other people that aren't as splashy, but who, you know, played a big role. So, you know, they're in a good spot, though. They believe in like Donald, you know, schematic, you know, aptitude on the defensive side. They obviously have to get it going on offense without Kuviak, but with a quarterback who on paper could be ascending, that's a good spot to be in. I'll just leave you with a broad question about the coaching cycle because we had 10 vacancies. And obviously, San Francisco was not one of them. He was a finalist for coach of the year, but among the 10 who either are going to a different spot or our first time had coach, who do you feel like has the most pressure on them? Hmm, the most pressure on them. Let's see. I got to go through my role of decks of who the 10 are.
I mean, Joe Brady, yeah, Joe Brady has the most pressure on him. John Harba has no pressure on him. He's the king of New York, Flash, New Jersey, as he should be. And they'll get better and it'll be cool. Mike McCarthy has some pressure on him. That's one of those like Pete Carroll last year where you go, wait. Shouldn't they do a rebuild yet they hired a win now? Coach, is that going to blow up or is that going to get away with that? And then yeah, Joe Brady for sure has the most pressure on him because not only did they blow out a coach who'd been really successful in Sean McDermott, but clearly they did it because they saw an open path to the Super Bowl that they couldn't achieve. And it wasn't like they did that and hired like, you know, Brant Dupinski or Nate Shieldhouse, like we're going to find the next young genius. They were like, no, no, we're going to run it back with the same guy we had as the OC
and hired a new DC. So it's, it's a lot of pressure on Joe Brady. The good news is, you know, you would take that pressure because you have Josh Allen. I mean, honestly, I remember when Steve Kerr was weighing Nick four years away back in the day and the calculus was, you go to the Nick, their trash. And if you do anything there, you're a hero. That's the easier, that's the easier move because the standard is so low and you're probably going to do something that registers the Warriors man. If you don't win there, there's a lot of pressure, but you've got step curry at all. But happened, he made the right move, the rest of history. And here we are. There you go. No, that, that being said, Mike, that being said, I mean, how much should the Warriors right now be ruined the Jonathan Kaminga trade? I love that you asked me that question.
I don't think they should be ruined the Jonathan Kaminga trade. I think they should be ruined the Jimmy Butler injury and Stephanie and all the bummer of a landscape. And I know a cynic would say, well, they're older, that's what happens and maybe that's true. But I'm still going to keep the dream alive. I thought, you know, last year when they won that playoff game, you know, when Jimmy went off against the Rockets and then won that series. And then one gave one, like I was like, it's happening. It is happening. And then of course, you know, stuff got hurt and that was that. So I'm going to just, I'm going to just believe that maybe there's one more run in them somehow in some configuration before stepping it up. And if not, it's still been the most awesome thing ever. Well, I don't know if you actually knew this, but in the middle of game seven, Heidi said
if the Warriors win, can you get me a buddy Hill Jersey because she was a buddy healed fan all of last year. And I would always be like, yeah, he's kind of annoying because he can't make a shot after the first week of the season. And then they win the game and I said, yes, I'll do it. So I finally fulfilled that, that promise and that number seven is doing a lot more than the Warriors current number seven who has played 17 total minutes in Christophe's porzingis. So there you have it. Yeah. Yeah. Not great, right? Maybe if the Warriors can acquire, game seven, game seven, buddy, no doubt and back in the, maybe the Warriors can acquire Max Crosby and then he can go down a straight. Well, we know, we know he's give Dreyman, if you read my story, hit in practice in Dreyman. That could be interesting because Max Crosby does not respect the red jersey in football practice. He's got a quarterback, even though he's not supposed to. So if you put Dreyman and Max on opposite teams in practice, that could be combustible.
Yeah, we'll start doing inner sport trades except Macklin, Celebrini's off limits. I'll go and just say that right now. Thank you for coming by and I know you got some stuff at the house right now. So you can go deal with it. I appreciate you. Yeah, just a part of your inheritance, falling by the way side as we improve our firmness and their conditioning situation, you'll, you'll be happy to know. Well, once it's fully improved and it's not an issue, I'll come home and visit and, you know, give a nice, give a nice visit to the new upgrades. I'll let you get to it. Thank you, father. All right. Thanks again. Mike Silver. Read him in the athletic. Give him a follow on Twitter. A lot of Raider fans are super happy with him. You should go and check out that social media just for your own entertainment here as we move forward on this Thursday. All right. Come on back. Got to play a song for you before the end of the show. Let's keep it rolling. It's Pop and Silver on the sports leader.
