Which Chicago Cubs pitchers can Craig Counsell trust when October arrives? With Jed Hoyer making major moves to reshape the pitching staff, adding Kevin Gausman, Clay Holmes and David Peterson, the Cubs have plenty of arms competing for key postseason innings. Shota Imanaga, Matthew Boyd, Ryan Rolison, Aaron Civale and others have all played important roles, but the Cubs’ recent pitching struggles have raised major questions about who can actually be trusted in October. Luke Stuckmeyer, Joey Christopoulos and Justin Roman break down the Cubs pitching staff, the bullpen concerns and which arms could make the difference in the playoffs on CHGO Cubs.

So it's time to play a little game of who do you trust pitching edition? Joy Cristopoulos, Luke Stuckmeyer, Justin Roman and all of our mini pods presented by sunny side. Use that code HICH. Yo Luke Stuckmeyer, you're going to lead off my friend. Let's just do a scale of one to 10 and let's start with the starting rotation. Uh huh. How much trust do you have in the Cubs starting rotation heading into the playoffs? You know what? I'm just going to go pitching in general. I trust the Cubs pitching as much as I trust a politician in an election year. In Illinois. In Illinois. We play in a hammock. That means we're voting three, four times. That means I don't trust a word they're saying.

Almost not at all. So if you're saying starting pitching, I trust that more than the bullpen. I give the starting pictures. I don't want to talk negative, but it's another story. Let's come back to the bullpen to round out the starting rotation. Are we going one through 10? Is that the scale? 10 heavy trust. So I'm actually going to go less than Luke because like who is Kevin Galsman? Is he a great pitcher? Or is he putting up clunkers? Because you've seen both with the Cubs. Um Clay Holmes has been majority good, but he's got a couple clunkers in there. You know, and Matthew Boyd again, it's been some great games. He's had some clunkers. So I'm actually going to go start your rotation. My trust factor is six out of 10. I might be the highest of the bunch. Not by much. It's probably maybe in the 7.2, 7.3-ish area. Just for the reason of when you talk about October baseball and you talk about the playoffs, do I have confidence that some of the guys that you name check Roman and maybe it is David Peterson or something?

Can they get you four innings? Can they keep you in a game? And can they at least make it competitive to allow this offense, which has been by and large a top two or top three offense all season long to at least hang in there for those four innings? I don't think anyone has an expectation anymore that your starter is going to go six, seven, eight innings deep in a playoff game. So if those guys can get me through two really strong turns through the rotation, I have a little bit more confidence and also just based on some pedigree and resume where I have to just bank on blindly that Gowsman maybe looks a little bit closer to like the picture that he was in October and not the good, bad, Kevin, bad that we've had over the last couple of starts and the same thing goes for Clay Holmes. Can I make a comparison because I'm in the middle seat and that's what happens in the middle seat? Please. We love to compare 2026 to 2016 when the Cubs won the World Series because you know 10 years and it's been the celebration all year. The biggest difference between the two teams is clearly the pitching. Yes. This rotate just talk about the rotation. Forget the bullpen. This rotation has no area.

No area. It has no Hendrix has no lester 9.9 on the truss scale. What this rotation has right now is three lackeys and two hammers. Okay. That's fair. It's not bad. Like I still kind of trusted those guys. But if I was trusting them in game seven of the World Series or against the Dodgers, I'd feel a little different. And that's why I have a little angst. It's like John Lackie got rocked in the World Series. Yeah. So like I'm with you. I just don't feel, I don't feel just like we have an ace, ace, ace. We don't know you were going to win when Jake Ariado was pitching when John Lester was. You just felt that confidence. Like I feel good when Clay Holmes is pitching. If we could circle back to the bullpen now, I don't want to be downer here. But like out of one through ten, my trust factor in the bullpen is honestly a one. I just never know from game to game who's going to stink. Who's maybe going to pull it together. I have high hopes that Daniel Polencia figures it out. I still have hopes that Edward Cabrera could figure it out. I have hopes that Zepharzon can figure it out. They just haven't yet. And I just never know from day to day is Trent Dorton going to get three outs or is going to get bombed out of Ridley. I'm at a one with our bullpen. Oh, my bullpen confidence. You prices right up. What do you do here? My bullpen confidence is at a 9.5. 9.5 that it's going to be bad. You know, that's, it depends on how you look at it. No, I don't have any confidence in this bullpen.

You might get a decent bullpened performance every once in a while. But I think against the Padres last year, they went toe to toe with one of the best bullpen. I don't think that's going to happen even if there's a miracle in this postseason. Well, that's the problem is when you talk about the starters, the thing that's different from 2016 is you had three guys that you said, man, I'd love to pitch this guy twice in a series. I don't even know if we could, we would have a healthy debate of whether that's homes, whether that's guysman, whether that's boy. We don't really have a clear answer of which pitcher do we want to definitely see twice, have him pitch twice in a series. When it comes to the bullpen, I don't even think we have one pitcher that we would love to see come into a tie game. No. And I don't think I'm being snarkier sarcastic. I think that's the reality and that's the truth. Yeah. So when that bullpen door opens up in an October scenario, it is definitely going to be eyes closed and just hoping that the matchup meets at least with what the player can provide on the mound of that.

And you get through it and then, oh yeah, relying that really elite defense to maybe snacks and balls over the air. Now can they go 50 feet over the fence to catch a home run ball? No, they can't and they've given up a lot of them this season. So that's going to be the question. I'm with you guys on a scale of one to 10 with a bullpen right now. One sounds great. I'm not going to, I'm not going to go over it. I can't go over one because there isn't one guy right now that is cooking. Even even a Zefferjohn or Daniel Plence, they all have had struggles over the last couple of weeks. It's really, really tough because there's not one single guy that we actually trust our lives with. We don't know. Um, might this be the year for the Cubs to just be like, you know what? Anybody that started our best pitchers are starters, not relievers. Let's just take anybody that started games and make those all our relievers. That means Peterson's a reliever, Assad's a reliever, Razor reliever, Savali's a reliever. And you know what? Anybody that doesn't fit into this specific, that's because we're going to have to pitch these guys two innings.

They get one and a half times through a rotation or through a lineup. Boom, you're out next guy in. I don't want to see the actual relief pitchers in too much. Well, that's, that's going to happen because especially for the Wildcard series, at most you have three starters, right? Three games. Only two really, right? But at most you only have three. So if it is Holmes, Boyd and Gowsman in whatever order you want to do, Peterson now goes to the bullpen, you know, does show to go to the bullpen. Savali, Assad, you are using guys that aren't like specific for innings. It's more about, I hate to say it, counsels kind of a motto outgitters. You just kind of like hoping Assad can get you two innings and get out, you know? And then get it to someone like Savali and get out, you know? And again, there are nine games left now where you're hoping that Palencia figures it out, Zephrazon figures it out, Kabbara figures it out, because there's still time to kind of get right. But as of right now at this, at this minipod, I just don't have faith in honestly any of them. That could very well be the case because jump in the comments here.

How do you feel on a scale of one to ten with the starters in the bullpen? If the starters are at a seven, can you pull from that seven and try and raise that one up to maybe a three or a four to get you through and then oh yeah, the offense is going to have to carry the day. Until then, watch with your eyes closed, but go comes. This minipod was presented by sunny side, use code HICH show. Pro football is back.
