2:00begin for every single team. Marcus Smart goes back to Houston after he was displeased with his first Lakers offer. And yet still, perhaps took a pay cut there. Gly way not be back for training camp Gary Trent, rot row bucks. That's not looking good. And Carl Towns and the next may not be on the right track for an extension before the season starts. But we start in the Bay area, Steph Curry heading into the final year of his contract with the Warriors is extension eligible, but tells Anthony Slater of ESPN that he has not made any decision yet, despite being eligible for an extension for nearly four weeks. He could sign one for a while, but he does not want this to be a dramatic situation. Danny, do you think there's any way? Steph waits this out the whole year and gets to free agency? I think there is a way. I think the way that happens is if the Warriors, and I don't know why Steph at this point would trust his current front office because his current front office is not done very good job. But I think if the Warriors can say to him or prove to him more so that there's a way

3:03that if they wait for him to be a free agent, which stuff can make more money doing that, that they can find a way to improve the roster by virtue of being able to have a little bit more cap today. That is what the plan has to be. Now, who's that person going to be? I don't know. I don't know what their plans would look like. I don't trust them to execute said plans because really since their most recent title, they've been kind of a disaster. No one wants to say it because we all love Steph and Curry. But that front office, I don't think it's helped him age gracefully. And part of it is that Jimmy Butler, Torres ACL, and you can't predict that and Steph dealt with runners need last year and you can't predict that. But I don't trust Golden State's front office to get this right. I do trust that Steph is going to be there and he's going to go down as a one team guy that spends his entire career with the Golden State Warriors. But I don't trust the Warriors, even if Steph does go into free agency next year to try and help them out, I don't trust them to actually put a championship roster around him ever again. Steph told CNBC that he does not want to go through free agency at all, which to me would suggest that he would like to sign an extension.

4:04But to me, what what is even going on then, right? Like, this seems super easy. It's either, hey, here's your one, your max, here's your two, your max. Or if you're offering him sub max deals, you have to explain to him why you're doing that. What the cat flixing booty mechanics are to Steph's credit. He said on the record, it's going to happen at the right time once I have all the information. I need to make a decision. That's right. And then later saying specifically, we're in a very interesting situation, all the different salary kept conditions of whether I sign for a max or less or whatever. I want to be on a competitive team. I don't really know how the warriors would suddenly have all this flexibility and spending power with Steph on a lower deal. Obviously, it helps them somewhat. But do you buy that? I mean, to me, it's very strange that they're at this point where once Jimmy towards ACL, you either got to trade Jimmy to get better or you got to really pray. Some of your young guys are good or you're kind of just rudderless for a couple of years. So I don't really see how I mean, obviously it helps a little bit with flexibility. But I don't see a step discount helps them a ton. Unless it's like pretty significant, like 10 million dollars plus.

5:08So here's I think part of how you have to look at this is so for next year, Steph is currently set to be an unrestricted free agent. Jimmy Butler set to be an unrestricted free agent dream on green set to be an unrestricted free agent. Chris have for Zingas as a player option. We'll just pretend that he picks that up. The only guys that are under guaranteed contracts for next season are Moses Moody, the Axel Lennonberg, who was just the first round picked this past year and Guiz Santos. Oh, and real Richard for $2.5 million. So Goldstein books are relatively clean for next year. Like if there is a there is a world where they could be a cap space team. Now, what does cap space get you in the summer of 2027? I'm not exactly sure we haven't seen a team really make a splash with cap space recently. And I don't know that the Warriors are going to be the next ones to do that. Like I don't also don't know who's going to be available because all these guys just now at this point, sign extensions and say, I'll get to where I want to be later. Like I'm just going to take the money now and figure it out on the back end. But I think that you have to look at it that way.

6:08And I also think this can't be a negotiation, right? Like this has to be a thing. It's like the Warriors are saying to stuff, whatever you want to do, we're good with. You want the most amount of money you can make for the most amount of years. Here's the deal. You want to take one year deal. Here's the contract. Sign the paper. You want to take last. Here's the contract. Like that's how this has to be from a warrior standpoint, right? I would agree with that. The trouble gets to your right that they have a ton of space. But what are they going to do? That's especially because Steph, if he takes a huge picket, like I just said, sure, maybe, but if he gets 50 to 60 million dollars, that whatever 100 million in space is halfway gone already, what are you doing with the space that is better than Dremond and Jimmy or things of that nature? Nice huge reagents class that could have some good players, but the top two on a straight to guys are Steph and Jimmy. The honest player option, anti Davis player option, Yoke, catch player option, Carl Towns, we'll get to him player option, Paul George Kevin Durant, Brandon Ingram, Kyrie Irving, Rudy Gober, player options on all of them. Michael Porter, Jr.'s unrestricted like that.

7:09The actual going to guarantee be free agent group isn't spectacular. And of course, everybody, natural, say, well, you can use space to make trades. And that's true. But then you have to, like the word you have to explain to Steph or to me, what specific player they think they can target with their space that would require him to take class money. I'm sure there's some guys in that list. I just said, of course, there were a few reports about anti Davis in the warriors in this very off season. But again, to do that, you're losing some or all of Jimmy and Dremond. How good is that team? Right. So it's very interesting to me that there would be some path that is more compelling to him to wait than doing this right now because then these players salaries are going to change, which to me indicates either if he does it before the season, it will be closer. Max, which is fine. He can do it every once and I agree with you that he'll be one team guy. Or if it happens in season, it will either be after Jimmy Butler returns if he's playing well, or after they make some sort of trade and have a more obvious short term plan for

8:10the rest of his career, because right now I get what all these options could be. But I don't see what Steph would see and go, yes, that is a reason for me to obviously take all this much less money. So if he doesn't sign this before the season because stuff is eligible to sign it at any time. This isn't any time. This is not an instance where, oh, if he doesn't sign it by October 19th, he can't do it until next summer. Like that's not what the situation is. But if he doesn't sign it prior to the season, what does he have to gain by signing it during the season? I'm not sure of that because even if they are playing well, I would have to think he would want to keep golden states options open next summer. And I think that him by not signing kind of gives the team the most flexibility possible, which again, I don't know why you would exactly trust this for an office, which has not been great since Bob Myers left. But like I kind of think that would have to be his thinking for not signing. Like if you're not signing right now, I don't know that anything can happen during the season that's going to change that. Steph is all on it completely. He's been very well informed about this. He said this team should have flexibility to make necessary moves if things happen.

9:13Those are always just the considerations for me. Information and patience is key and information was the word that made me go, whoop, like what does he want to know? What is he feeling like is coming next for the warriors? As he thinks about this and what actually would make them good enough that that team with Steph would be awesome. I don't know, but I do think personally, given what he said and what T leaves are, what the warriors have done the last couple of years, that they're interested in having a good team around Steph, but know that once Katie left and once the clay part was over, that they were basically just trying to feel this competitive of a team as they could for the rest of his career, knowing that it's probably impossible to build a title contender unless they could have got LeBron to come for the minimum. So I think the information game for him is exactly what we've kind of described is trying to find a player that whatever they make, Steph just takes the rest of their cap space basically, but can the front office actually do that? Right? You're right to point that out and this group has been connected to however many stars in the last couple of years or major moves and very few of them happen, right? Almost none of them have actually come to fruition and tell Jimmy Butler, which was like

10:17Jimmy Butler forces way there. And then remember for a second, it was like, oh, that's actually not going to happen. And then it's it anyway. So really strange how this has gone for the worst to this point, really strange that they have like this quasi patients plan, but not clear for what or for why. But I guess I get why Steph is waiting because he's going to make a lot of money either way. That's always good. I would like to make a lot of money. Yeah, I would too. I think I mean, but if I have to wait to make a lot of money or if I can make a lot of money right now, I'm happy either way. Steph has made a lot of money too. And I do wonder because part of his priority is obviously being a one team guy. I do wonder how much winning still matters because if like chasing championships, it's that's not happening in Golden State. That window is painted shut, not opening back up. There are not moves out there, even if they would have gotten LeBron, I don't think that would have been a championship caliber team. So what does he want? Like does he just want to be like, you know, I'm good getting to the play in every year for the rest of my career. And I'm happy to go out that way. I don't want to go out like a loser.

11:17I want to get to the play in every year. Like they could build that kind of team. I just kind of don't know the value there. If his knee explodes, you'll still get paid some, but not as much. That's some risk. Perhaps before the season is the best time. We will see where this goes. 13:23I think she's making us your first listen today and every single day. Lockdown warriors, Charlie Walter will have much more on Steph Curry, the path forward for the warriors and whatever the heck their seasons going to be. Is the actual going to be awesome? Maybe that's the answer that makes them just sign on the dotted line. Immediately we had now two of the champs in New York, Carl Towns is extension eligible. Until the season starts, but he could decline his player option for two seasons from now and then be extension eligible season. However, Shams Trania and Vince Goodwill, the SPN report that talks have stagnated between the next and Towns is going to make 57 million this season. His max if he declines that player option is four years and pop your eyes at your head like a cartoon, 276 million dollars. They've had a ton of discussions between the nicks and towns, but there's been no movement lately. Danny, he was awesome in the playoffs. They reinvented their team around him and it worked quite well. What do you think would be the reason for this to stagnate or is it the very obvious answer that Jim Joel made very clear on the radio earlier this summer?

14:26I think it is the very obvious answer that the New York Knicks are not going to be a team that is going to be in the second apron. If not, seem very many teams do it. We've seen a few teams do it, but the New York Knicks are not going to be the next one. If they would have Mitchell Robinson would probably still be in New York. And I think one of the things that keeps getting thrown out here is the maximum number. And you mentioned, you know, make sure eyes pop out of your head like a cartoon. That Carl Towns can make 272 over five years. That's not happening. Like that, we might as well not even mention that because Carl Towns, the New York Knicks are not offering Carl Anthony Towns that much. I don't think there's a team in the NBA that would offer Carl Anthony Towns that amount of money. I do not think he is that type of max player. He's a very good player. He's an all NBA caliber player. That is like the the Yanis is the Luca, the the Nikola Yoke inches of the world. That's not where Carl Towns is. But I think that this is just it's a financial thing for New York because part of the thing here, Tony, is that they're going to have to take care of Jalen Brunson at some point. And Jalen Brunson signed a deal that was below market.

15:29He extended when he didn't have to. He could have waited and became a free agent and made much more money than he's making currently for the New York Knicks. And because he did that, that is part of the reason why they have a team that is as good as it is right now because their best player took less money. And that's something that we have seen a few other stars do. Guy like Victor Womanyama took less money this summer. But part of the reason the Niks are as good as they are is because of Jalen Brunson's contract. They're going to have to pay for that in the back end. And I think Jalen Brunson has made it clear that he expects that there's going to be a point where the Brings truck has to be backed up in a Madison Square Garden for Jalen Brunson to come in and take all of it. And I think the Knicks know that. And I think because the Knicks know that they are preparing for that to be the case. They are preparing for that to happen. And you cannot pay Carl and theme towns that amount of money. And then Jalen Brunson that amount of money and keep anything resembling this championship team together. Yeah, OG got a huge contract because the summer that PG was a free agent. You know, he that a team had cap space for him, right? And can't got a big contract.

16:30They got traded for it. And he's awesome now. And Mikhail Bridges got his extension last summer that looked horrible and then grade. And guess what? Josh Hart is extension eligible. Doos McBride is super underpaid right now too. He is extension eligible, right? Mr. Robinson's already a casualty of this. But this is to be clear, there's two things that are happening. One is what James Dawn said, which is true. Is the second apron is challenging. Now to me, the Knicks are a team that should be willing to do it for at least a year or maybe about a year. We'll see if that actually ends up being what they decided to do or something of the effect. But I'll be fascinated to see if they ever pivot that route or don't. But if they are not ever go ahead. I think the year to do it would be when you're defending your title is now. I agree. You should want to go all in say, hey, we won the title. We're going to go all in to defend it. And if we don't win the title again, okay, we tried, we did everything we could. But they're not doing every if they're not doing everything they can right now. I just don't think that financially they're ever going to go up against that limit.

17:33If they're not doing it, I agree. I agree with that, which is why all those other players being in flux makes this challenging. And especially if Brunson is going to get paid. So you're looking at two guys who got paid on the wing because of other market factors. And then a bunch of other guys who are about to get paid a lot more because the team is really good. And Cat is of course in the middle of this. And so two things stand out to me is like, you, you, you, you, you, you're your teeth. One is his age, right? He's over 30 and he's a great shooter. That will last forever. I think he like jumps six inches off the ground to shoot. So he'll be able to do that until he's, you know, 60 years old. That's great. He's a good, great player for a while. But like what are you actually willing to pay aging carl towns and the option you're getting closer to Brunson's time also makes this challenging because you'd like to do it early as the next, but if you do it earlier, you're not trying to pay him a lot. You'd like to see him play well for more time to actually do that. So the timing is tricky. It sounds like the nicks are agree with me because according to Ian Bagley of S&Y, the current talks between the nicks and towns started in the range of 45 to 50 million dollars

18:40in that first year, which would scale up quite a bit. But as, you know, even if you start at 50 million, you're ending it like two, 15 to 20. That's like 50 million less than his max. Right. So they're clearly very cognizant of over that four year range. What that actually would be, it would be so sad to see a championship team just explode because of the second apron. This is a situation where there's a lot of factors and unique factors financially that made the nicks possible that are now going to all compete with each other and cats first in line to be the competitor for that money. Yeah. And I, I understand you want to get your money. You want to get paid. That's where Carl Towns is at. But this is kind of the era that we live in. This is what the second apron does. Look at that Boston Celtics team that won the title. What three years ago now drew holiday. Chris Depp's for Zingas, Jalen Brown, finals MVP, all those guys are in different team now. And I know Jalen Brown lasted two seasons after it drew holiday. Chris Depp's for Zingas. They had one year left after winning the title, trying to defend it. They're not. They didn't and then they're gone.

19:41Look at the OKC team that won the title two years ago. Luddorck, huge part of that team. He's gone. Like the second apron comes for everybody, whether you want to go into it or not. And the nicks are not the first team that we've watched dodged the second apron, right? The Thunder did it this summer with I think a general manager or whatever Sam Presses title is that was very clearly annoyed by the fact that they had to dodge the second apron because of ownership when he went on the record of the Oklahoma and basically said, you know, we are trading these guys so we can pay the other guys later saying that they will go into the second apron at some point. But there was one team in the second apron last year. There's currently one team in the second apron in the Denver Nuggets. And I don't think anybody expects them to finish the season in the second apron because of their history. This is just what happens. You cannot build unless you have a perfect storm, kind of what OKC did where you've got guys on rookie scale contracts. You can't build anything that resembles a dynasty anymore because of this. You can. You got to be going to live with the restrictions and nobody is going to be because of the limited

20:43window of these teams now. It's so hard to repeat and build a dynasty anyway. That's why the Thunder of the perfect team to do it as well. If the next have a championship core locked up for multiple more years like that I guess I said earlier is the team to do it. Boston was a team that would have made sense to me if they didn't get smoked by the next in the second round the following year, right? Then versionally good. They've been over it before Minnesota has been over it before. I think Golden State Phoenix like a few teams have done it and all of them ended up being bad for various reasons, which is unrelated to their spending. But to me that like if you're really good and you have a chance to be really good for three ish to five ish years doing it for a year or two is fine. I think teams are too scared of not being good anymore for whatever reason. And they're hurting their fans as a result and losing their team in this might stink for next fans. If this ends up it won't be this year they have basically the same team outside of Mitchell Robinson. But at some point a problem and speaking of money Marcus smart did not like his offers from the Lakers this summer and speaking of money again Gary trend. Rot row.

23:45lock down nix your second listen they will have lots to say about carl towns congrats in advance to Gavin Shaw who may not be on lock down nix for a little bit next week for various personal reasons is the best the at the bounce round little business show are the big news items touched on in various things Joe Barton and the athletic reporting on Gary Trent and the bucks the other possible wink wink circumvention case the NBA has announced in many situations that they are in fact investigating this a different law firm the the Hacker think group is looking into this one so there is an investigation there is a law firm involved and there could be quite big punishments for the bucks this is strange to me not that they're getting investigated they should it is circumvention but that the reporting basically says that there could be a huge huge punishment for this and there should be a big punishment to be clear but the problem to me is that it's not the same as quiet many ways in that I felt the same way about Joe Smith quiet was way worse in

24:49that what Gary Trent did what I think probably having to Bradley be all the summer to with Joe Smith was planning on doing is technically a legal string of transactions you can't plan them in advance for the reasons that we're talking about but that is that to me is like a something that should be punished less because it could technically legally happen and they should be punished to some extent because it's very obvious that this is circumvention to me but I don't think it should be the same level of like massive massive punishment that the clippers got what do you think well in one of the things that Joe brought up in that article in the athletic is the same thing happened with Bobby Portis and Milwaukee just nobody bad and I had it because Bobby Portis had the best year of his career the year prior to signing the deal the reason why that everyone kind of looked at this contract sideways and that it's under investigation is because Gary Trent junior kind of stuck like he did not play anywhere near this and there was no cap space like no one was bidding against Milwaukee bucks when this happened and that's kind of why this is here which I think kind of makes it a little bit worse because we're all looking like how how did that happen like the tip

25:52off for the quiet stuff was fantastic investigative reporting by Pablo Torrey the tip off for Gary Trent junior is like that guy's not that good logic yeah contract is it right it's with the quiet stuff that it's like oh you know he took a pay cut he's helping out and we find out through all these other avenues that he's making the money back with Gary Trent junior is like what what's going on there I do think that the punishment should be less severe than what the quiet stuff was at least from an organizational standpoint but I do think that this could be along the lines of the Joe Smith thing where this is a case where you could see the player punished a little bit more where Joe Smith's contract was boyded and maybe that's what happens with Gary Trent junior where quiet did not have that the clippers were the team that face the penalty this could be one where yes the bucks face the penalty which they're a bad organization I think they've been a bad organization that just happened to have one of the five best players in the world but I think that Gary Trent junior could have this contract boyded as like his penalty is part of this too that's possible I mean varda did report that similar punishment to the thing look people

26:56have joked and I get it's funny joke to be clear they're like all punishment enough that Gary Trent they have to pay Gary Trent this contract like that's funny but look you can call this a victim most crime because Gary Trent gets paid I cover the Pacers right so I'll just explain to you if you ever thought of this last summer because Gary Trent signed a minimum they were able to stretch damn to sign Miles Turner like if Gary Trent got paid when he was worth last summer Miles Turner might still be on the Pacers that's just one ripple effect of many you could point to from how this impacts other teams the other point that I thought was interesting from this story that varda put out was that he referenced what people in the league talking about the timing that they signed that officially way late in the off season like July 11th way late air quotes like two weeks and which means they knew Gary Trent's market and knew what other teams could even legally offer and that makes it even more ridiculous that did it later whereas if they did it in like late June or early July it could just like oh we missed red the market went too fast and wanted to be to other offers right like they can even use that excuse so really good points uh check that out in the athletic for more uh big news number two coming from Wednesday unrelated to star player extensions

28:02Derek livley the always seemingly injured Derek livley and Dallas Tim McMahon a BSPN reporting that livley has not received a medical parents to participate in Mav's training camp because he is still recovering from the surgery that he had on his right foot last season and start his status would start of the regular season is to be determined but he is ramping up toward being cleared for basketball activity this guy ever going to play again Danny this has been forever do you know how many games Derek livley has played in the three years he's been in the NBA Tony wow I mean what do you play like like five last year like very few um seven last year can I guess oh I was gonna guess 55 he is 70 and 98 games he's played 98 games in three years um at some point and listen I don't love calling guys injury riddled or whatnot like I think that's an unfair thing for a lot of guys but at some point you got to be on the floor Derek livley played 55 games as rookie played 36 games the second year seven games last year
