About this episode

“You fell in love at first crunch and now the crispy chicken crunch wrap slider is back at Taco Bell, but with a twist, it's crispy all-white meat chicken nuggets inside a slider side's crunch wrap.”From the transcript

The Golden Knights were able to roll a four-line rotation and in the end VGK's depth paid off.  It was especially noticeable in the third period when the Canucks were fatigued on the tail end of a back-to-back. Marc Gatcomb delivered the game-winner in the second period just 34 seconds after the Canucks tied it.  It was the second game in which VGK showed a strong response following an opponent's goal. We discuss whether VGK should keep Victor Olafsson on the top power play unit, after he scored his second goal this season on the man-advantage.  And, we critique Adin Hill's performance after being in net for the first time following a long layoff.

This is the Lockdown Podcast Network celebrating 10 years of your team every day. You fell in love at first crunch and now the crispy chicken crunch wrap slider is back at Taco Bell, but with a twist, it's crispy all-white meat chicken nuggets inside a slider side's crunch wrap. But now you can enjoy them with the kick of Hidden Valley Diablo Ranch or try the tortilla chip coated nuggets on their own. They're waiting for you. The crispy chicken crunch wrap slider, a brand new classic, is back on the Taco Bell. The Golden Knights earned their first road victory of the season, edging the stubborn Vancouver connects 3-2. VGK was able to roll four lines consistently throughout the night and that depth ultimately paid off. Welcome to the Lockdown Golden Knights, your daily podcast on the Vegas Golden Knights,

part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Hi again from Las Vegas, Tony Kredasco and Chris Golic coming up ahead on today's episode. We recap last night's win over Vancouver the first road win for VGK this season. We discuss VGK's power play unit with Victor Olivesson on it. He's still on power play one and evaluation of Aiden Hill's performance is first since April. Welcome to your most rewarding NFL season ever. Only on Fandall were brought to you by Fandall today. VGK improves to 2-1 on the season with last night's 3-2 win over the Vancouver Connects

who were playing on the tail end of a back-to-back. The three Golden Knights goals were scored by Mitch Marner, Victor Olivesson scores his second power play goal of the young season. And Mark Gadcomb delivers the game winner some 34 seconds after the Connects tied up this game in the second period. It was the second time in three games that we saw a pretty good VGK response, if you will. But on Sunday night, VGK's fourth line chipped in and Ryan Craig was able to roll all four lines. Unlike in the Anaheim loss, when the Golden Knights were chasing the game with Dowd, Bowman, and Gadcomb, they were basically benched in that game in the third period. Nice to see all four lines being rolled for Ryan Craig. Yeah, the minutes of the fourth line still weren't necessarily that great, but you did see them in the third.

Dowd was 11-11-11. I think he was in the single digits in the Anaheim loss. Raiden Bowman was around 1041. And then Gadcomb, of course, with the big goal you mentioned. He was right at 907. But again, you did see them in the third period. And that's what you want to do, right? You got a team on the tail end of a back-to-back in the Vancouver conucks. So you want to keep, you want to stay as fresh as possible. You roll all four lines. Fresh legs helps everything. It all to me, the conucks didn't get worn down in this game. The Golden Knights just kind of just stayed with it, right? I thought Ryan Craig had a great perspective, and he said that the team was committed to the game. And they only give a five-high danger chance as the entire game, five high dangers. So that tells you right there, defensively, there was a commitment. And on the offensive end, 16 high danger chance for the Vegas Golden Knights. So underlying metrics suggest if you play this game a couple of times over, it's probably a little more than a three to two outcome in favor of the Golden Knights.

But credits of Vancouver first sticking around for a little bit, and the Golden Knights for finding their way. Yeah, it was committed to rigged last night back and of a back-to-back. That's why, I mean, they wilted later on in the game. You could see it with the conucks. The Golden Knights also didn't pull ahead though, so. Yeah, no scoring in that third period. Will the foul score be a three to two? Three to two like that, something like that. Someone on this show said if it was three to two, someone on this show tweeted yesterday and warning this game is three to two written a little over. And I got a plus 1950 locally, and I got a little score on that, so cheers. Oh, you did. Okay, cheers. The fourth line did all that dirty work, right? And I want to talk a little bit about them. Gatcom said after the game that his line, their purpose was to regain the momentum in the game in the contest after it was tied up at two of peace. And he said, again, they needed to tilt the ice back in VGK's direction. And that goal for Gatcom, just his 11th in 91 games played in the NHL.

So that's a big deal for Gatcom. You said 11 goals, 91 games, right? Yeah, that's a nice little scoring pace right there for a fourth line winger. So curious how Gatcom's offensive game develops. And you go back to the black ox game. The fourth line was responsible for the Hannah Fingole, I believe in transition. So fourth line definitely starting to see some juice. It's kind of a hybrid line, right? Braden Bowman is playing that energy role on the left wing, but he can score. And you saw him look pretty good when he was moved up in the lineup in that game on Friday against Anna Heim. So it's a concern. We're the third and fourth line heading into the season, right? And the third line I think has been doing pretty well offensively while not being irresponsible on the other side. And the fourth line definitely, it seems like it says advertised as far as what Kelly McPrimson was looking for. So you like the response? You like as I believe Ryan Craig calls them reset lines. That's what the fourth line was.

They reset and they basically led a were able to let the rest of the team relax a little but I guess to find some space in that third period. I think Vancouver's just a tad better than we imagined. I think that they're a much better team and if they have full health, I mean, they're pretty well coached and the goals last night were scored by Paul Cotter is fourth. Cotter got to be the first angel star of the week, right, Tony? Has to be the first angel star of the week. No doubt. No doubt. No, he's had a sensational opening week. And Jonathan Leckermocky will talk about his bogus goal later on in Aden Hill also agreed that it was a really bad goal that he gave up. Really odd too that there was a scoreless third period for VGK and for both teams last night. Eighth consecutive win against the connox. When I looked at the hockey stat card, Chris Mitch Martyr was at the top. Ivan Barbyshev and Jack Eichel on the bottom for their performance.

And then. They're both close to. Yeah, not good last night. And then on the defensive side, Rasmus Anderson, what did he do other than blow a tire in that game? He was on top of the list and Noah Hanuffin was on the bottom. It's funny because Hanuffin was at the top, right? The first couple of games and then he's at the bottom for his performance. But talk a little bit more about Anderson. What did he do seriously to earn such good grades in that game? Well, sometimes out of sight out of mind comes comes into play, right? You have two giveaways, one shot on goal, no hits. Lason hit five hits on the other side of that. J. Theter hit counter remains at zero. It looks like. So with the other side, I think it's just more out of sight out of mind. I think he stayed out of trouble. Not a lot of high danger chances against him. I mean, the team like you have five high dangers.

So when you look at the hockey stat card, yeah, Lason Hanuffin and J. Theter on the bottom. But if you look where the bars slid to the left, easiest way to look to talk about the hockey stat card left is bad right is good. And Lason and Hanuffin are barely over a minus 0.5. So that tells you right there that the defense was fine. Top to bottom. But Anderson, while there's been out of sight out of mind comes to mind, while there's been, I thought was a little more noticeable on this game. I thought he was just, you know, you heard his name called a little more out of house to explain it, but it it worked. It worked. Yeah. I agree with you there. And something that stood out in this game as well, when you go back to Gatcom's goal was again, the response. 34 seconds. Worked behind the net too. Yeah. 34 seconds after that goal that tied it up, the equalizer by Lecker-Mocky. Lecker-Mocky, you see Gatcom coming out.

And this is the second and three games where we've seen that response, which used to be a trademark. The calling card for the Vegas Cold of Nights and I think that that's a really positive sign that they're responding quite well. Yeah, the response is good. And it's give Craig some credit for putting the right groups out there when they need that response or at least to stop the bleeding. There's one concern to talk about as we get out of this here. It's Vancouver. It's Vancouver on the tail of the back to back and we're talking about the Golden Night just kind of escaping with the victory instead of maybe running away with it. But again, the underlying metric 16 to five high dangers. Hayden Hill will talk more about one cookie gets behind him. So the stats suggest this was a better game played than maybe just a simple seeing I 3-2 victory, you know, mentions. But let's see how this trend continues and if the Golden Lights can have more success against the team that's the level of Chicago, right Vancouver Chicago, who's going to be better

or worse at the end of the year. Probably going to be within eight points of each other. So early on, Golden Lights 2-1 record in the first week. So take it, move on, right? Coming up next, Victor Olivesson, on Power Play 1, will he stay there? We'll talk about it next right here. Unlocked on Golden Lights. And Victor Olivesen had the only goal on all of those chances. So it was the fourth power play of the night. That was in the second period. Again, no scoring in the third. And that happened after Tom Vylinder tripped Ivan Barbachev, sent to the box.

Ryan Craig sent Olivesen out there on the ice to replace Shade Theodore with Mitch Marner up top again. And then he got to go with the five forwards there on the power play. Olivesen said that he wanted to get good positioning in front of the net. And he knew that Mark Stone would find him. So the big question that looms today. Will this become the permanent structure for power play unit number one with Victor Olivesen on that unit? I think that's what makes the most sense. Right. You need a left handed shot down there. Olivesen is probably part of me the best left handed shot. This team has. So why wouldn't Olivesen be down there? I still wish a theater would have gotten a look down there. But that's not exactly how it went. But that goal was just vintage Victor Olivesen. Right. He's sitting right there on the circle.

And it worked and it should continue to work as long as Ryan Craig. I hope he doesn't overthink this. Certainly it was a bit concerning like it's just the way the goal lights move the puck right ever since Jack Michaels been here. All the puck carrying easy to the quarterback or Jack Michaels side of the ice. You don't see a lot of the puck doesn't stay on the right side of the ice. And I think that's what the hope was you get to Marner's side. I think that's what the Jack to open up and give a different look whether it gets below the goal line or the jack side for one timer. And I don't know how many shots I could even had from the left side. At least a one timer as a result of some quick passing. So this is certainly the right move and hopefully it sticks like this. And the one thing that Ryan Craig has been stressing a lot lately is for those players to move around from each side. And I think that's what I'm saying that a ton. And we've seen a little bit more of Mark Stone below the goal line but he's so comfortable on the left side.

But they do need to keep things moving and they can't be stagnant on the power play. Motion is another thing that I talk a lot about on the VGK power play. And I think that's what Ryan Craig's vision was a lot more puck movement, a lot faster puck movement. I always go back to the the tip may lightning in their glory days with stamp coast on that power play. They had some of the best puck movement. I've ever seen even better than Edmonton on their best days on the power play. And I think that's what the hope was in Ryan Craig's mind and it wasn't working. So credit the young coach, I guess we can say that, at least as far as his career is concerned in making the right decision and not being too stubborn to. You know, want to see it through for better or for worse and longer would have gone with Mariner on that part of me with Mariner on that right side. It would have gone for worse and Mariner is the QB.

I mean, geez, he is so good. That puck moves so much faster and feet or is an excellent power play QB and Mariner is two or three notches above him. Yeah, earlier on on the power play unit, we must add that we saw pretty much two QBs of top, right? They both played at the top of the ice and they played catch and would have you, but it did not move the puck inside. So there was no movement towards the goal. The goal penetration. Right, exactly, but they were both out there just passing the puck around and they really couldn't find open lanes. Now Victor Olivesin who becomes goal lifts in not goal less son took four shots on the night, not afraid to shoot the puck. That's a good thing for the goal the nights, definitely not afraid to shoot. The second power play goal of this young season is score the first one the other night when he came out late on that line change.

His two power play goals, by the way, matches would he had all of last season between Colorado and Cal Gary and his best season was 11 power play goals in 2019, 2020 with the Buffalo Sabers. He definitely can shoot the puck and that's one of the issues the goal the nights have had because they usually get into this rut where they're not shooting the puck at the net. And that's all you really need to do to get some good chances. Yeah, I mean, I just couldn't remember who scored the other power play goal was hurdle now that I remember it was in tight. So yeah, I mean, it's it's going to work like this right the goal nights have had a really good power play for really the last few seasons. And yeah, Dorifie is who he was he was a phenomenal shooter from that right side and had a lethal just lethal conversion rate anytime that puck found him and I don't know how big the gap is from Olivesin to the Adore at least on that right circle.

At least with the shot there's a lot more things that make Dorifie of a much better player overall, but is there I don't know a nine and a half million dollar difference between Olivesin and Dorifie of I don't think as far as the power play is concerned. Maybe the rest of you know the metrics between the two players, but there is a reasonable chance that that Olivesin can what eight power play goals this season as long as he stays healthy, but again, he has to stay on the ice and we've seen Olivesin historically. You know, do do do some things that make him difficult to stay in the lineup as far as five on five playing things like that so hopefully Olivesin is learned from some of his previous ways and earns his ice because he'll be on that top power play unit, you know, unless they need a different look unless they start struggling. Yeah, and hurdle continues to play well on that power play unit just with his net front presence. Yeah, I mean hurdle can play the bumper. He could also play below the goal and him and stone can be moved around if they do need a different look and yeah, I mean it's the goal is power play can be lethal and that's obviously a huge part of the post season success as well.

I know we got a little while for that. Yeah, worry about that, but not that far away. I'll be here before we know it. Coming up next, we critique eight in hills first night, grabbing the net since the spring. We'll talk about it right here on lockdown, golden nights. Welcome back on Lockdown Golden Knights from Las Vegas Tony Kronasco and Chris Gallic reporting. Hope you had a great weekend.

And suddenly in the morning, especially starting to feel a little bit like fall. It was great football and hockey weather this weekend in the high 90s. Yeah, it's a hockey weather here or for this six o'clock game. It was nice weather to yesterday six o'clock local Vegas time. We had to go to the rain early yesterday. So it felt nice out. I just caught the video of raspis Anderson losing his state blade. Man, that was bad. I heard it happened. And I kind of was watching not too closely, but my he almost heard himself going in that corner and then she theater. I was giving him a toe back to the bench. Oh my God. I know that was that was pretty bad. Yeah, blew a tire in that game. And he'll let's talk about him 18 saves on just 20 shots in his first game between the pipes in nearly six months. To be fair, there weren't a ton of great a chances for the connox playing their second night in a row. Okay, and you can tell that Vancouver slowed down in the third period. So how do we assess the performance by Aiden Hill.

One goal not so much on him. The second goal was from the sharp angle. Wow, you really play that poorly needed starts. That's how I assess the Tony. There you go. The horse needed a start after a long layoff. And then after the layoff, he needed a star. I like that. I mean, what analogy? Let's go. No, yeah, no, I mean that that's what it comes down to right. I got beat by a stinkin 70 to one shot at the wire. The other day. Yeah, I saw you put that up there. That's pretty amazing. Actually, it's pretty bad. Next. No, it needed that start last night. He got through it. And he was fine. Like he was fine. That second goal. Okay, there was a bad goal. It happens. Whatever. Let's move on. It's, you know, it's going to happen to Carter Hart. It's going to happen to Aiden Hill. It's going to happen to Shasturken. Who's all of a sudden the scoring machine lately and getting a sister. He has more goals than William Carlson. That's not Jesus Christ. Here we go. So yeah, I mean, it's 178 days. Like there's people just going bananas on on social media right now. 178 days. And someone like he had a preseason game to prepare. No, that's nothing. And the preseason games were just to make sure, you know, you get through the motions and get everything stretched out and whatever. And you can't simulate game speed.

Definitely not in the preseason and definitely not in 178 days. So credit for being kind of sharp as the word, but he wasn't dull either. 20 shots, 18 saves. So that's a 900 save percentage by my couple semesters of community college right there. So yeah, I mean, listen to Liga goals. The Liga safer percentage according to Grock is a 891 right now and 8 and hills above that. So, you know, let's let's take that and let's see how Eden responds later in the week, maybe likely Thursday against Toronto if I had to guess. It was a pedestrian effort if you will. It's had a good way to put it. Yeah, I think so. Well, in that in the third period, just VGK radio talking about how sharp. And he helped look that was a sharp. He was a pedestrian effort. I'm going to stick with that. I'm going to write that down for future reference. I like. Yeah, no hold on to that one. I mean, there was one play. I think it was the second where whatever.

So that you can just go out and hang on to that. Go ahead. No, there was a play in the second. I believe where you misplayed a puck that was fortunate not to end up in the back of the net. Like, let's be completely fair about this. We're not going to. Not going to let him off the hook, but we're not going to at least I'm not going to drag him either. I mean, he got through it. He got through it. Healthy. The goal lights got to win. There was a little push there in the end. There was some necessary saves down the stretch. So, you know, he got the job done. I mean, what would the venue be if the gold knife tighter lot lost it over time or, you know, took wins over time and lost. I mean, people will be going bananas right now. So first start 178 days. If if this is the floor for a hidden hill, everything's going to be fine. If this is the ceiling for a hidden hill, then, you know, in another 25 30 days, we'll have a different perspective about this. But, you know, say most of the everything you should have that Paul Cotter, goal ran the doorstep. Great goal. No one's going to put that on the. Wow. The pass. No, no, hockey. The pass that went to her, Nick was right through the right through the stack of William Carlson.

Okay, I'm sure you I'm sure you'll be the first one to point every time we happen. Yeah, yeah. Um, the second shot. I mean, we talk about bad angle shots on this show, not just a, I guess the goal, but those bad angle shots, they'd be, they'd be, they'd be, they'd be log and tops and they'd be good. They'd be good. They'd be good. Good. Good. Good. Good. Good. Good. Good. Yeah. I mean, listen, it's 178 days. It's six months. It's, it can't be overstated the amount of time that went by and every goalie will tell you they need reps. They need to be in the net to stay sharp. And the fact that Aiden Hill got through it. I'm not going to say the word sharp. He wasn't sharp, but he wasn't sharp. No, he wasn't. He wasn't. He wasn't. He wasn't necessarily a nice steak knife that just kind of just flows through the steak with minimal pressure. It was a, it was a butter knife going through maybe some, some stale bread, but it's okay. It's okay. It's his first start in 178 days. I'm gonna say that until, until some people relax.

Okay. So I can't imagine how good anyone would be. Well, how good would anyone be at their job at their hobby at whatever if they go 178 days between time of doing it. Yes, he's been practicing. Okay, fine. But it's different when the lights go on, especially from preseason to regular season. And the connoxing they're a good team right now. So it's a tougher game too. The connox will be back later in the season. Don't worry. But for now, they're not a dormant. So I was about to say and we'll probably continue this conversation tomorrow. How does Ryan Craig use the gold tenders now Seattle coming up Tuesday night. But the big game against Toronto at home on Thursday. Aden Hill does not go in that game. I am sorry. Why did you go Carter hard in Seattle and Toronto back to back Tuesday Thursday. Yeah, so you go Carter hard to games in a row. I go in Hill Thursday. Oh boy. Here we go. We appreciate you tuning in. Make sure that you check out lockdown sports today, YouTube channel and the audio.

We'll see you again tomorrow right here.
