More to read, more to unfold. May when you're there. Hello everyone and welcome back to More to Read, the podcast where there is always more to unfold. I'm a host Shanteng. Today we begin with a line from Spencer Johnson that quietly impacts a timeless quality, integrity. Then we wander through two ancient Chinese works, Jo Duan Yees on the love of the Lotus and Wantien Zhangs passing by Lingding Yang, before turning to an excerpt from Harper Lee's classic American novel to Kill a Mockingbird. Three very different voices, all speaking to the same precious thing, integrity. Let's dive in. Opening quote, words that lead the way.

Integrity is telling myself the truth and honesty is telling the truth to other people. Spencer Johnson, Zheng Zhi is telling himself the truth, and the truth is telling the truth to other people. Sibin is in Yuehuan Xun. Spencer Johnson, you may know him at the author of Who Moved My Cheese and The One Minute Manager. Books have travelled into dozens of languages, and he had a rare gift, the ability to make deep things few simple. This particular quote cuts straight to the heart of what integrity really means. Honesty he suggests is about telling the truth to others, but integrity begins earlier and deeper.

It's telling the truth to yourself. It's that quiet conversation you have when no one else is watching. And that, more than any grand gesture, is where a life of principal starts. Integrity is telling myself the truth, and honesty is telling the truth to other people. Spencer Johnson, Sibin is in Yuehuan Xun. Classics recited, echoes through time.

Before we go any further, let's rewind about a thousand years to Northern Song Dynasty in China. They lived a scholar named Zhou Duan Yi. Now here's something worth noticing. When it comes to talking about integrity, the East and the West often take different paths. Spencer Johnson states the idea directly, plainly, almost boldly. But Zhou Duan Yi, he takes a different route. He doesn't tell you what integrity is. He shows you through a flower. This subtle indirect way of expressing noble ideals is a beloved tradition in classical Chinese literature. It goes by many names, expressing emotion through objects or conveying ideals via symbols. And Zhou Duan Yi, a great new Confucian thinker, perfected it in his famous prose poem,

a work known in English as, on the love of the Lotus, or sometimes, the language of flowers. Let's listen to the original Chinese version and the classic English translation, adapted from Herbert Allen Zhao's early and widely loved version, and feel the quiet integrity rising from these lines. The martial artists who were rated by42 people, and who skipped in others cave 3000 years before the 18th century. had more plays to guide the Taoism world than divided East and East and West. The first number of films of the past are on for selection. 可爱者圣烦 近逃圆名独爱局 自理堂来是人圣爱母单 与独爱联职出于你而不然 着轻联而不妖

There are many lovely ones Tau Yuan Ming of the Jing dynasty Laoged only the Cuisenthavan Since the Tang dynasty, however, It has been the fashion to love the peony. But I love the lotus because it grows out of the mud and yet is not contaminated. It baths in clear water but does not appear seductive. Its stem is hollow inside and straight outside. It sends out no unnecessary branches. Its fragrance grows more delightful the farther it drifts. It stands tall and pure, meant to be admired from a distance not handled roughly. I think the chrysanthemum is the flower of the recluse, the peony, the flower of the wealthy, and the lotus, the flower of the gentleman.

Alas, the love for chrysanthemums has been rare since Taohra Ming. Who shares my love for the lotus? As for the love for peonies, it is only natural that it should have such widespread appeal. Beautiful, isn't it? What strikes me is the quiet contrast. Johnson gives us a definition. Jo Duan Yi gives us an image. The lotus rises from mud and stays clean. It is integrity, remaining true to oneself untouched by the Maya around it, keeping an inner clarity no matter what the world throws at you. That too is telling yourself the truth. And next let's meet another towering figure from ancient China, one tin shou, a national

hero of the southern Song Dynasty. He lived in the time of invasion and collapse. He fought fiercely to defend his country, and even after being captured he never surrendered. His poem, passing by Ling Ding Yang, is not just a record of those dark days. It is the cry of a man whose integrity outlasted his freedom. Let's listen to the poem both in English and Chinese. The English version is translated by the famous translator Xu Yuanchong. Thank you. Thank you for your hard work. Every day of monasticday, we speak more more in a Waterless Fishful.

Shanthe Pursuit, Fengpiao Xu, Shunshi Fucheng, Yu Dha Ping, Huangkong Tantou, Huangkong, Lin Ding Yang Li, Tan Lin Ding, Yuan Sheng Zigu, Shuui Wu Si, Liu Qidan Xin, Zhao Han Qing, Passing by Lin Ding Yang, by Wun Tinsheng, Dailing in the Book of Change, I rode through hardship great, and desperately fought the foe for four long years. Like Willow Down, the war-torn land looks desolate, I sink or swim as duckweed in the rain appears. For the perils and perilous beach I have size,

a lonely ocean now I feel dreary and lonely. Since olden days there's never been a man but dies. I'd leave a loyalist's name in history only. This is integrity at its most unyielding. Even in the face of death, one Tinsheng Rui is a very young man. He's a very young man. He's a very young man. He's a very young man. He's a very young man. He's a very young man. Wun Tinsheng refused to betray his country or his conscience. He told himself the truth that loyalty mattered more than survival, and he told the world the same truth, knowing full well the cost. That is integrity at its highest,

a belief that never dims, a flame that burns even at the candles go out. Now let's cross the ocean and turn to American literature, to a novel that has touched millions of readers, Harper Lee's to kill the mockingbird. The story unfolds in a small southern town in the US, where a lawyer named Atticus Finch takes on the defense of a black man falsely accused of a crime. And in chapter 11, there is a passage that quietly reviews the shape of Atticus's integrity. And what he tries to teach his children about, courage, justice, and the simple difficult worker of being a good human being. A little background. Atticus knows that defending this man will bring down criticism,

even danger on himself and his family. But he does it anyway, not because he expects to win, but because he knows it's the right thing to do. And in this excerpt, Atticus speaks to his son, Jim, after a painful encounter with their elderly, venomous neighbor, Mrs. Dubose. The lesson he offers may be gentle in tone, but it is still at the core. And now I'll read you an excerpt taken from chapter 11 of this novel, in both English and Chinese. The story of the book is about a man who is a good man. And he is a good man. To kill a mockingbird by Harper Lee. Mrs. Dubose lived alone, except for a black girl who attended to her constantly. Two doors up the street from us in a house with steep front steps and a dock trot hall.

She was very old. She spent most of each day in bed and the rest in a wheelchair. Rumor had it, she kept a CSA pistol hidden among her numerous shores and wraps. When we were small, Jim and I kept our activities to the southern part of the neighborhood. But by the time I was well into second grade and tormenting Boo Ratley had grown old, the business section of Makeham drew us frequently up the street. Past Mrs. Harry Lafayette Dubose's property. It was impossible to go to town without passing her house unless we were willing to walk a mile out of our way. Previous minor runnings with her left me with no desire for more. But Jim said, I had to grow up sometime. Jim and I hated her. If she was on the porch when we passed, her wrathful gaze would rake over us, shits subject us to ruthless questioning about our behaviour

and give us a gloomy prediction of woodward amount to when we grew up, which was always nothing. We'd long since given up the idea of walking past her house on the opposite side of the street. That only made her raise her voice and let the whole neighborhood know. We could do nothing to please her. If I said as cheerful as I could, hey Mrs. Dubose, shits snap back. Don't you say hey to me, you ugly girl. You say good afternoon Mrs. Dubose. She was vicious. Once she heard Jim refer to our father as Atticus and her reaction was apoplectic. Besides calling us the sassyest Mr. disrespect for muts to ever pass away, she told us it was a pity our father hadn't remarried after our mother's death. A lovely a lady then our mother never lived, she said, and it was heartbreaking the way Atticus Finch

let his children run wild. I didn't remember our mother, but Jim did. He'd tell me about her sometimes, and he turned livid when Mrs. Dubose said that to us. After surviving Boo Ratley, a Matt Dog, and other terrors, Jim had decided it was cowardly to stop head Miss Rachel's front steps and wait. So he decreed, we must run as far as the post office corner each evening to meet Atticus coming from work. Countless evenings, Atticus would find Jim furious over something Mrs. Dubose has said when we passed by. Jim would say she wouldn't be very sick, not with all that hollering. Three of us came to her house, Atticus would tip his hat, wave gallantly and say, good evening Mrs. Dubose, you look lovely this evening. Easy does it, son.

Atticus would say, she's an old lady, and she's ill. Just hold your head high and be a gentleman. No matter what she says to you, it's your job not to let her get to you. I never heard Atticus say what she looked like a picture of. It tell her the court house news, say he hoped with all his heart she'd have a good day tomorrow, put his hat back on, coist me unto his shoulders, right in front of her, and we'd head home as twilight fell. In moments like these, I thought my father, who hated guns and had never been to any wars, was the bravest man alive. The day after Jim's 12th birthday, the money in his pocket was burning a hole. So we headed for town early that afternoon. Jim thought he had enough to buy a miniature steam engine for himself, and a twilling baton for me. I'd had my eye on that baton for a long time. It was at Vijay Elmore's,

decked out with sequins and tinsel, and it cost 17 cents. Back then, my biggest ambition was to grow up and twel with the Makeham County High School band. I'd gotten pretty good at tossing a stick up and almost catching it on the way down. But Calpernia had started banning me from the house every time she saw me with a stick in my hand. I figured a real baton would fix that habit, and I thought it was generous of Jim to buy one for me. Mrs. Dubose was on her porch when we passed by. Where are you two off to at this hour? She shouted. Playing her key, I suppose? I'll just to call the principal and tell him. She put her hands on the wheels of a chair and fixed us with a stone glare. Oh, it's Saturday, Mrs. Dubose. Jim said. Mrs. Dubose, we've been going to town by ourselves

since we're at this high. Jim placed his hand-barm down about two feet above the sidewalk. Doesn't matter if it's Saturday. She mumbled. I wonder if your father knows where you are. Don't you lie to me, she yelled. Jeremy Finch, Mori Atkinson told me you tore down her scuppen on Arbor this morning. She's going to tell your father and then you wish you'd never been born. If you unsend to reform school by next week, my name's not Dubose. Don't you contradict me, Mrs. Dubose shouted. And you? She pointed a knalled finger at me. What are you doing in those overalls? You should be in the dress and comisole young lady. You'll end up waiting tables if somebody doesn't straighten you out. A Finch waiting tables at the Ok Cafe, huh? Jim hadn't been near Miss Mori's scuppen on Arbor

since the previous summer. And he knew Miss Mori wouldn't tell Atkins even if he had, so he denied it outright. I was terrified. The Ok Cafe was a city-plays on the north side of the square. I grabbed Jim's hand, but he shook me off. But Mrs. Dubose wouldn't let us go. Not only a Finch waiting tables, but one in the courthouse, lawing for niggers. Come on, Scout. He whispered, don't pay her any mind. Just hold your head high and be a gentleman. Jim's face turned bright red. I pulled at his sleeve, and as we walked down the sidewalk, we were treated to a parade about our family's moral decay. Her main point being that half the Finch's were in the Asylum men away, and if our mother were alive, we'd never have sunk so low. scraps were摩羞

The Saise or Tobels. Dubose would have its own houses and Silence can also be controlled by their departures. Black people were Shopping fanboys. And you get your heads tied on this leg, and you get your ears便. She was a long-awaited woman. She was too old. She was in the bed for a long time. She was sitting in the bed for a long time. Some people say she used to use a hard-to-use gun to hide her unnoticed waist and waist. When I was young, I was only looking at the real difficulty of the interaction between the show and the show. But when I was two years old, I thought that the force of the gun was too weak for the sake of the weak. We often went through the dark, the dark, dark, and dark, to the top of the north. We couldn't go to the town without her family. Unless we were willing to walk through the whole road.

A few times ago, I didn't want to meet her again. But the show said, I still have to grow up a little bit, so I can walk through. I and the show were all hateful. When we were at home, if she went to the Wolf, she would be angry and angry with us, and we were so hungry that we didn't do anything bad. And the people who were laughing together would say, what would she do after we grew up? Of course, we were so upset. We decided not to walk away from her face. Because of this, she would immediately raise her door and hear the whole leader. We were so worried about her. If I was so happy to talk to her, I would be so upset. We would get such a reply. Don't be so upset with me. You should say, it's so bad that we were so upset. She was so bad. Once she heard the story of the mother,

she was like a wind blowing in her heart. She said, we were in the most terrible, the most innocent. Besides, she said to us, my mother died, my father didn't care about us. It was so bad. She said, it's never been more pitiful than my mother. Adikas, this is not a joke. Let us be proud of our mother. I don't remember my mother, but my mother. Sometimes she talks to me. Du Bo Si Tai Tai told us, the face of the mother is so angry. The mother has been living in the dead from the accident. She has experienced the same thing with other people. Now, she said, she is so worried about her father who was standing in front of the lady in the distance. She said, we have to go to the station to pick up the father.

Many times, Adikas saw the mother of the mother. Because Du Bo Si Tai Tai said something to us at the time. The mother usually said, she is not sure, she is so powerful. We have been to her for three years. Adikas always has a meeting with her mother. She said, good night Du Bo Si Tai Tai. You look like a flower tonight. Don't be nervous. Adikas said, she is old and has a illness. You should be a person who is a professor. No matter what she says, you don't want to be angry. I never heard Adikas say something to her. She often tells her some new words of law and she wishes her to stay in the hospital for two days and then bring a hat. When she is facing me, she will hide in the room and go home in the dark. When she is facing me,

I think my father is the most brave person in the world. She is angry and has never been in the war. The second day of the 12th birthday her money is not enough. So we went to the town early in the afternoon. I think her money has been bought by her for her own little money. She will only help me. I saw her only help. She is a shopkeeper. She is a manager of the financial firm and financial firm. She is a 7-year-old girl. At that time, my eyes were only the more I could not see the middle school. I often went to the shop and fell asleep. My本領 was more and more idle. Every time I saw my hand with my hand, I was not allowed to enter. I think if I had a real help, this cat would have been removed. I think the result

was really great for me. If we went to the Du Bo Si's home, she would be on the way. Where did you two go at this time? She was angry. I saw a student and I was going to call the principal. She put her hand in the bottom of the box to express her eyes. Today is the new 7-6 Du Bo Si's home. The principal said, we went to the town when we were so high. The principal used to hide the place in the bottom of the box. The new 6 is not a good example. She is not clear. I don't know if your father knows where you two are. Don't call me Sahu. The principal told me that you were going to tell her about her house that day. She told your father that you would regret

if you didn't live in the world. If you didn't send your school to the next 7-7, I wouldn't call Du Bo Si. Don't call me Sahu. Du Bo Si is still calling. She used to be the only one who had the right hand. What are you wearing? You should wear a mask. You should wear a young lady who is in the back. If no one is going to teach you, you have to go to the kitchen. The people in the atmosphere are in the kitchen. After the school year, she went to the kitchen without the lady. She said she didn't have anything. She knew that she had been in the kitchen. The lady didn't tell Adi Ke Si. I was scared. The cafe owner was sitting in the wall of the factory and was a place to hide the sister. I caught the show and she turned me off. But Du Bo Si was too cruel to us.

There was a person running away and a person was hiding behind the door. Even if Sige Tte, she was born to be a person who was a schoolmate. The street is red. I pulled her sleeves and walked on the street. I heard the rumors about our family being bad. The big issue is no matter what they say, there is a common person who is sick. But if our mother is still there, we will not be able to hide this kind of place. The street is red. The street is red. The street is red. The street is red. The street is red. The street is red. The street is red.

Today, after opening our show with a quote, an integrity from Spencer Johnson, we've journeyed across time and regions. From a lotus pond in northern Song China, to a battle-worn shoreline in the southern Song, and finally, to a quiet street in Maycom, Alabama, the United States. Three voices, three kinds of integrity. Jo Duen's lotus teaches us to remain pure, even when rooted in mud. When Tin-Chang's poem shows us the resolve to hold on to belief, even when death is certain. An atypical finch, standing calm before a bitter old woman and a town full of prejudice, gives us the quiet courage to do what is right, not because it's easy, but because it's true. A flower, a dying poet, a small town lawyer, none of them had an easy path, and perhaps that is exactly the point.

Integrity is never tested on smooth roads. I'm Shanting in Beijing. Thank you for listening, and we'll see you next time right here on More To Read. Thank you for listening.
