Welcome to another episode of Hot Clock Morning, Zimbray, and NEMHOWSER. It is a wonderful Monday morning of your game week. We are just a few days away from the COX playing the season opener, not only for them, but for the rest of the NFL. And Vann, it is hurtling towards us. That seemingly breakneck speed. It is a busy day for yours truly. After we wrap up with this, I'm going to be doing good day Seattle, I guess, at 1015. They wanted to hear a little bit more about HP ticks. I'll be on with them.
Then I will be racing to pick up Mr. Rob Staten at the light rail station and taking him to COX practice with me. Then we will hear from Mike McDonald, which will, I think, be the final injury report. We will hear from him and watch practice or at least parts of it that we can. Then we've got real hot talk. It's a double pod Monday at 5 o'clock tonight. Then I'll be on serious XM tonight with Mad Dog sports at 7 o'clock. More of me than you could ever want if you want to find me in all those places. This episode is brought to you by our friends over at PEMCO Insurance who serve the Northwest and I'm doing so for 75 years as well as prize picks. I'm laughing because someone just commented new hat. This is one of my older hats. O.G. watcher of this show would be like, I haven't seen that hat for a while, but it's good to know we've got some newer watchers with us.
Let's get right to it. There's a lot to get to. We got our first injury report of the season yesterday last night as a matter of fact. There was some interesting information on there. If you have not seen it, let me show it to you. This is the Seahawks injury report as well as the Patriots. What you will see at the top is for the Patriots Christian Barmore. Their defensive tackle did not practice and neither did Travion Henderson. They're running back. We talked to Doug Khyde yesterday. If you missed that episode, I highly recommend checking it out. Doug was awesome and he's always great. I think there's real doubt about Travion Henderson playing. We did just here minutes ago from Mike Vrable that they're expecting Christian Barmore to practice today. Maybe he will be available.
I don't know what to think there. I think Travion Henderson seems questionable at best. The Seahawks. The thing that jumped out at this one, there was one player, only one player that had a did not participate. It was Ty Okada. Not a name we have talked about up until this point being injured. He is listed as having a hamstring injury. We are just a few days away. It seems highly unlikely that someone is going to make it back from a hamstring injury when they have not practiced. Usually, think about yesterday's practice as a, quote, Thursday practice during a normal season, a normal week, I should say. If a player doesn't go on a Thursday at all, there's almost no chance they're going to play in the game. Today will essentially be the Friday practice, which is going to be lighter and usually
you get your final injury report after that. I don't know what the Seahawks are going to do if they're going to give this as their final or tomorrow's their final, whatever the case. We will get another injury report. My expectation is that Ty Okada is going to be out for this game. We'll talk about what that means in a second, but let's go through the rest of this. Nicki Minori, who there's been a lot more questions about, was limited participant and had his pads on and all that stuff for practice yesterday. Also Tori Horton, back on the practice field. In fact, why don't I just show you those guys on the practice field here? There's a little video of Tori Horton going through his warm-ups and moving around pretty well. Here is Tori Horton running on to the practice field and getting a little high-five from
Jakarta A. Wright. He's back out there. This was Nicki Minori. I thought this was pretty funny. This was Nicki Minori taking the field with his pads on and then you'll see at the end here Uchena Nuozu pointing to me. Look who's back. Those guys know the significance of Nicki Minori getting back with pads and practicing. There's some positive signs there, but the other aspects to this are... You've got Anthony Bradford as a limited with a knee injury. You've got Josh Jones, back up swing tackle as limited with a knee injury. Julian Neal, who had a quad injury, was a full participant, so that's good news. Emmanuel Wilson, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, also a full participant.
What does it all mean? What does it all mean? As I said, I think Tyokata's out. We'll talk about how that plays out throughout the rest of this in a sec. I don't think Nicki Minori is going to play. That's my read. Yes, he is making progress. Yes, it's great that he was on the field. Yes, it's great that Ichena was pointing him out and all that stuff is good news. The way that the Seahawks have typically brought guys back from long times off, which is Nick Smith, all of training camp, is the first day that he's back as a limited participant in practice is probably at least a week away from starting. It could be two, honestly. They really want to make sure guys have the time to ramp up. I would be shocked if Nicki Minori plays on Wednesday. I think it's much more likely that Nicki Minori is ready to go for the next game, week
two against the Cardinals. Keep in mind, this is a Wednesday and then essentially a mini-by week all the way to the following Sunday. I think that's probably my best guess about when Nicki Minori will play his first game. Tori Horton, similarly, yes, limited participant, but similarly has been out for a couple of weeks. He was through a lot of training camps. He probably doesn't need the same amount of ramp up time as Nick, but it would be pretty shocking to me if Tori Horton plays in week one. I think he seems a lot more likely to play in week two. There is good news in this. Emmanuel Wilson being at full participant is good. Having George Hullani, Emmanuel Wilson, and Giddion Price, all available week one, was not a sure thing like a week ago. That's good news. Julian Neal being a full participant.
That's good news. I don't think whether he's health wise ready to play, I would not expect him to be ready to play, given that he's a rookie and has a lot of learning to do. I'm not sure we'll see Julian Neal play a snap this season, depending on how things play out. I think it was a pretty costly injury for him. One of the things that I think is also, well, I'll play this a little bit later, but we'll see about Trayvon Diggs and what happens there. Let's talk about the implications of assuming I am right, which is always a big assumption. TioCotta doesn't play. What happens next? Well, the Ceeox did just resign Anthony Bell to the practice squad a couple days ago. TioCotta is kind of your more classic, deep safety, and is fast and covers sideline to
sideline. The guy that profiles most to that of the guys that are available to the Ceeox would be Rodney Thomas. Rodney Thomas is known for his speed. He's a veteran. He started a number of games for the Colts. This football season control your game day your way with passes from sling. Queen Carvania stood haloed by the morning sun.
An army hung on her every word. My champions, I have sold my chariot on Carvana to a lovely SUV and inexplicably queenly offer. They're even coming to the castle to collect it. Tonight we feast. And offer you can feast on. Sell your car today on Carvana. Pick up Fies male fly. I would bet Roddy Thomas is your starter next to Julian Love. That's not what any of us had on our bingo card when this started. So that's my guess. I think AJ Finley is the other option. And then he's a possibility. Depends on how they feel. I think Roddy Thomas is the veteran. He started a number of games. I think that's probably where they go, but we'll find out.
And then De Anthony Bell could be elevated as well if they feel like they want to use him in certain situations, depending on what the game plan is, depending on how they want to allocate their personnel, because we heard from Ernest Jones yesterday that he kind of let the cat out of the bag on two fronts. He talked about how Tyrese Knight has earned his spot on the field and three linebackers is going to be a more common thing because of the way T-Nights played. So I think you're going to see as I've talked about on here a bunch, Tyrese Knight is going to take some of the reps that would have otherwise gone to Nicki Minori. And he also let the cat out of the bag about Nicki Minori. He said essentially, you know, it'll be great when we get him back implying that he's not going to be back for this game. So I think Tyrese Knight is going to take a decent amount of reps.
And then we have to think about the implications of that from, from, sorry, I got a text that distracted me. So Tyrese Knight will take some of those snaps from Nicki Minori. And then I think you're going to probably have maybe either Julian Love or De Anthony Bell. And so if they want Julian Love to take some of those box safety snaps, like the dime safety or nickel stuff that they like to do where they go big nickel, then you might have AJ Finley up with Rodney Thomas to be the two other safeties. If they want De Anthony Bell to potentially take some of those, you could see him up. So they could pull two safeties up for this game. If we look at the Seahawks roster and the practice squad in particular, and we're looking at who are the possibilities of who they might pull up from the practice squad, besides
the guys that I mentioned, Trayvon Diggs is the obvious other name that could be someone they look at. I guess it's possible that they would look at valus Jones, but I don't think with the running back situation that they need to do that. I guess it's possible they could bring up another offensive lineman, but generally, like it depends on what's going on with Josh Jones and Anthony Bradford. But if they feel like those guys are okay, then I don't think they'll bring up another lineman. So yeah, we won't find out elevations until tomorrow, which is essentially Saturday before the day before the game. But if I was to guess, I think they might elevate two safeties for this one. It's either going to be Rodney Thomas and De Anthony Bell or Rodney Thomas and AJ Finley.
So, I don't know. It has a ripple effect here, for sure. And it's a lot of players at similar areas on the roster, which complicates things further. Now if you're the Patriots, where does this show up? I mean, shows up in a lot of places. Their ability to attack the safety changes, the passing games already, their strength, Rick May has been an explosive pass where we've talked about that. And AJ Brown's already going to be a handful. You've got Romeo Dobbs, who is also a handful. Tomorrow, Douglas, who can be a big play guy. You've got the tight ends who are guys they like to use as pass catchers. So this is going to be like the biggest aspect. And I don't think it changes one thing, which was a true statement, you know, when I made
it a couple of days ago, which is the defensive line has to be great. The front seven has to be great. Like they have to get pressure in this game in order to slow down the Patriots offense. They're going to have to be great stopping the run, putting the Patriots in tougher situations. They're going to have to be great getting after the pastor and not giving Drake May chances to sit around in the pocket. They're going to have to get some sacks and put them in negative behind schedule downs and distances to take some of the pressure off of this secondary. So I don't think these injuries change what's really important for this game. But it is going to be a little bit harder than I think anybody wanted it to be due to those injuries. So that's kind of where things stand on the injury front.

It's the only place you can kind of help verify that. Okay. So I want to get into this match up a little bit more. But I also wanted to play some sound for you that stood out for me from yesterday. And as is always the case, I'll ask you guys to verify that you can hear things okay. But check in with me if you can't. I'll do my best. But I think this is going to work.
So first thing I wanted to play for you was sound from sound from Sam Darnold. And this was something I thought was pretty cool. I asked him as someone who is a golfer, does he feel like there are similarities between the mechanics and getting out of sync and out of sequence with the golf swing versus the mechanics of throwing the ball as a quarterback. And here is what Sam said on that front. Yeah. It's a great question. I think one thing that is a little bit different and it's funny I was actually just talking to someone this morning about it is golfers. You know, especially it's like a set thing kickers also with JMI. Like it's a set routine and you have your own swing.
Like sometimes as a football player as a quarterback, that sequencing might need to shorten up based on how much time we have in the pocket or if my feet, if I have to move in my feet or face in this way and have to make a throw this way, like sometimes you got to rely on arm strength or your agility to make a play and make a throw. So that would be the one difference. But sometimes just throwing it out there on the practice field. Like I want to make sure I'm sequenced up as much as I can be and make sure that everything is flowing and that's the other thing too for doing it as long as I have been. Like if I'm not sequenced up the right way and my hips and my shoulders and torso aren't aligned in the right way, then I'll feel it. You know, whether it's in my hips, my shoulder. So I know right away if I'm not sequenced up and there's definitely ways that I can fix that as I go on throughout the day and even the next couple days. Did you know that you had a high spin rate pull or not, where did you allow it? Just talking to someone about that as well. Yeah, it's a high spin rate but it's more of the efficiency of it.
I think I've always spun it. It's funny if people talk about spin. All that dude spins it. When he lets it go and you can tell he just has a natural throwing motion. I've always been able to do that since high school and middle school. And there's just a lot of things that you try to tweak along the way throughout your quarterback or you need to continue to make yourself more efficient. I would say one thing too is in college, I really relied on it. Like I relied on my arm to make a ton of throws and I had a coach in college who said, hey, one day you're not going to be able to do that. You're going to play a long time and you're not always going to just be able to rely on your arm to make throws. So I think just hearing that and getting my body into as many throws as possible helps with that mindset. One of the things that's funny there, I don't know if you guys listen to enough Sam Donald Press conference, is getting Sam to kind of say anything that isn't just superficial
high level stuff. Not quite Russell Wilson-esque but just to get a detailed answer is not easy. And those are two great answers. I was really curious to hear and he's clearly been thinking about it himself. So that was cool. And one of the other things that I asked Sam about was this notion that we all talked to him, at least I talked about in Nashville where he kind of made this point of, hey, we need to, I need to get on the same page with and build this relationship with Brian Flurry. And that was a little bit of a red flag, at least a yellow flag that that relationship hadn't been built up as much yet. Here was Sam Donald when I asked him if they had a chance to work on that and like was that something that he kind of initiated or that coach Flurry did. And here's what he said. How did you spend the time with the flurry and build that relationship? Have you had a chance to do that? And how do you initiate it? How does that work? Yeah, it goes both ways. For me, just talking about some of the things that I like from last year or even years prior. So really my self-initiating conversation of what we like to do as an offense. Because he's been in San Francisco for so many years. Which is great, the last couple of years when I wasn't there. They've done a ton of great things which I've harped on to you guys of how they do things in the run game and then some of the past game things that they do. But just getting with him on some of the things that we like as a group to do in the past game and in the run game. So it's a collaboration for sure. And at the end of the day, he has the final say on what goes in and what doesn't. So a little bit of, he answers the question a little bit. He also kind of took it in a different direction, which is fine.
But as it's here, how much he was focused on how they're collaborating on what goes in the offense and things that he liked from the 49ers and talked about the run game as well. We got some great sound from Brian Flurry. And I want to play a number of these clips. This was actually Flurry talking about. He was asked about kind of how 13 personnel was a big part of what went on in the NFL last year, with at least with the Rams and that what he thought about using that this year. And here's what Brian Flurry said in that regard. It's a really interesting conversation because last year, I think they caught a lot of people off guard by doing that, especially in those first few weeks. And so when you get into bigger groupings, usually it simplifies the defensive menu. But as they continue to put it on the field, the defensive menu continues to grow as people become more and more prepared. So going into this season, while that might seem like an advanced trend for an offense to do, the entire league has had the entire offseason to come up with their plan for depending 13 personnel.
So I don't think you're going to see quite the same advantages. We will have some of it available and deploy it when we feel appropriate. But I don't know that you're going to get quite the level of production that the Rams had out of it. Just lead wide. So people are saying it is hard to hear this one. So that's too bad. Well, yeah, he basically what Brian Flurry was saying was that the Rams ran 13 personnel at last year and kind of surprised some people. And that this year, they're not going to be able to surprise people and the teams that spent the whole offseason, you know, figuring out how to defend that a little bit differently. They're going to be more prepared. And basically one of the things he was getting at is part of the reason it worked last year is that teams defensively have a limited menu of how they're going to defend 13 personnel. And then as it got used more, they expanded their menu.
And so now they've had a full offseason to expand their menu on how to handle that. And it is interesting that he's kind of following that and he has a point of view. And I think we're learning a little bit more about his point of view on those kinds of things. The other piece that, you know, there's a lot of stuff from Flurry that I wanted to kind of talk to. I'm going to try one other thing to see if this is better. It's really curious how this was all working and then it stopped working. But, um, and right at this, right at the jump, he talked about how much fun he is having. So let's see if this plays a little bit better for you guys. And I thought this was cool to hear from Brian Flurry. How did you get your first chance to call, have plays in an NFL game and all that?
How much are you looking forward to that? Obviously I'm really looking forward to it too. I've had more fun out here at practice these last two days than probably any of the last seven years. So I'm excited to continue this journey and get out there for the first time on Thursday. Within five. Just going into the game plan process with the guys and, you know, it's such a great group of guys and they have so much experience together. They all have great ownership of the offense. And so, you know, being able to talk about things and how I see it and how they see it and make sure that it's all synchronized together has been really fun. Sounds like the sound is a little better for you guys there. Just so you guys know, people get so angry at me about this and so easy. Just figure this out. Well, literally the same people, like different people are watching the same show and giving me completely different feedback about what's working and what isn't. And so it's very hard to figure out what knobs to, to twittle and, and what to do there.
But I'm glad it sounds like that was a better sound and I will try to hunt around in here for some of the, the clips that I wanted to share. So the fact that, I mean, that was the most personality we've got from Brian Flurry was him talking about how much fun he's having and the game planning process. And I think that was really cool to, to kind of see him getting excited for this game. And then, let's see if this is the one. Let's see. I mean, we're dealing with outdated information. Okay, that was not exactly what I was looking for. So where was it? So we talked about a couple of things with him and let me, let me actually, I have a different way to get to it. So hold on.
But I loved that he was kind of talking about the different styles of play that he wants to bring up. And one of the things I kind of asked and maybe you guys have heard it, me do it in the, the press conferences. So I really was a little bit, you know, I don't think concerned, but aware that Brian Flurry or not that the Seahawks last year spent too much time, I think, adjusting to their opponent in their game plan for week one and didn't run the offense that they really claimed was their identity. And that's where that one play action pass. It just wasn't the same. So I asked a few different guys that question. Here was me asking Brian Flurry about that and here is what he said. Game and maybe not, you know, fall to adjusting to your opponent too much. Yeah, I mean, there's always an adjustment to the opponent, right? You want to take away their ability to do what they want to do well.
But I think that fits well with what we want to do. We're just going to play Seahawk football. And that's, you know, what Mike has always said, we're going to be fast and aggressive and just try and control the game and put pressure on the opponent anyway we can. Cooper Cup was telling us about the call up theory and practice. How important do you feel like those have been for you and just getting ready to do it? Those have been great. It'd be great for me, but also great for us as a unit for them to kind of hear in real time the way I would like to sequence things and how one play can lead into the next and then the next and the next and just kind of feel the flow of it. The background with your stepfather obviously, so we'll skip that part. I think you heard there. I think it was a pretty cool concept from him in that about, you know, yes, you want to be yourself and call Seahawk football, but you want to also take away what the opponent wants to do well. And he talked about in a few different times in this press conference about that you need
to adjust in the game. Like it's going to be the first couple of series before you know how the Patriots are trying to defend you. You're going to take that information. You're going to adjust your play calls as a result. So I mean, one of the things that just is really clear to me about Brian Flurry and it is not surprising given that Mike McDonald's the one that hired him and was so excited to bring him a board. It's a guy is smart like he is smart. That doesn't guarantee he's going to be good, but he's not going to be a guy that doesn't understand what's going on. He's not going to be a guy that stares at, you know, film and has trouble deciding what to do about it. I mean, I will say this one of the things that can be a challenge with being smart and I've had this with people I've worked with before. It could be hard sometimes to know what to focus on and what is the right decision, what's
the best decision to make. You can be really smart, but not necessarily handle that information and pay attention to the right things. So there's a lot still, regardless to learn about Brian Flurry, but the process, the way he's mind works, the way he thinks, it seems relatively clear. There will be some fog. I would guess there'll be some fog going into the season once the bullets start flying, and he has to adjust, but maybe, just maybe, it'll be the defenses that are adjusting to him. That would be nice. And look, the Seahawks had some of that benefit last year when they had Clint Cubiak run in the 12 personnel, the heavy personnel, the way that they were and spamming play action off of that and getting massive explosive plays for the first 10 games of the season. Teams just kept playing base defense against the Seahawks, no matter what.
And that was not a good idea. But we'll see if Brian Flurry can bring his own twist to that in this one. But next, I think there might be some other sound from Brian Flurry. Let me just check one thing before I walk away from the Brian Flurry piece. I think that's relatively it. Add and Dirty had some sound. I want to play for you guys about Dante Fowler, which I think was good, and also about Trayvon Digs. So let me pull up that real quick as we'll say goodbye to Mr. Flurry for the time being. And let me find the right sound from Mr. Dirty. So this, all right.
So this is sound from, yeah, I think this is sound from add and dirty about Trayvon Digs and where he is and his readiness and adjusting to be in Seattle. And also if he's kind of back to himself. More than just the last week since he's got here, I think his intention and the way he approaches practice from the guy, no, he's pushing it. He's trying to put his right foot forwards and everyone respects that. And he's working on the things he needs to work on daily. He's out there just off the practice, working with the guys. Like he's done a good job. Where's he going off of the defense? Yeah, he knows enough of the defense. What about where he's at from, a physical standpoint, and getting his lives underneath and then off? Yeah, I thought like the last, I would say since Kansas City game, I've really seen his legs get underneath him. Like I thought like he came in and he hit them two days running just before we played Kansas City, yes, Kansas City. And he hadn't done a lot and you could see that like got some weight on his legs, but then he's done a great job.
You've seen him at the past. Like you mentioned, he's been in the first one he's had in several years. He's able to do full season training and everything. Or you can see a little bit of a self-baking stone there and like with him. Yeah, I think he's doing the play. He's still got it. It's just like, he's done a play football in a long time. It's just going to, it's a process of getting everything back underneath you, having the daily routine of getting your body right and practice and he's doing that and he's going through the process of that. We've got my game made three years in the system. What is that unlock with this game? It seems like a lifetime. I think it allows you, it allows an understanding. There's a lot of continuity in the players that we have. So it allows like a kind of unspoken at times, understanding of what we're doing and why we're trying to do something. I think first of all, you kind of, when you're learning a system, you learn how to operate it and you learn how to like own your role in it and it allows through this time, it's allowed people to kind of expand that and say, okay, can I add a different role?
Do I truly understand why we call this in what situation? So instead of just doing my job, I can make plays within that and there's certain players doing that right now and we just have to keep going through the process and execute when it's time to execute. Where does that show up, the continuity of the players? In terms of being able to get a game plan in faster, in terms of being able to make adjustments, in terms of you guys being able to put more on their plates, where does it show up in different phases throughout the timeline of us being here? I think last year you saw it in position groups. I think on the back end, the guys were way more connected. I think on the front end, the guys were way more connected. EJ Dre, Kontinay, Payo, those guys were way more connected. I've seen it this year, the whole defense is more connected. They understand the wise behind why the other guys are doing something and they can talk about it as a collective. I see the growth as like, it's not just like one thing that happens, it's just, it's more stacking. A lot of great stuff there from Adden Dirty and I mean, Trayvondig's saying good things
about, I still don't know if he's going to be ready to play this week or not, if they're going to feel the need to have him play this week or not. The safety situation might preclude them from being able to have Trayvondig's play because they might need safety's up. I would bet he's more likely to be available for next week in Arizona, but we'll see. But this notion of them being together for three years, it's not just him and Mike McDonald who have that continuity, it's a lot of these players that have the continuity as well. That's when I was asking him about where does that show up because you can imagine that it can show up in the way that they implement a game plan. They're able to do it quicker, that they're able to get to certain things faster, that maybe that they're able to expand the amount of plays that they have on their menu on the call sheet for a given week because there are so much familiarity within the defensive
personnel that they can do it because they've done it before multiple times. It can mean that they can make later changes to the game plan and adjust. It can mean that communication is better or they can approach communication differently because the guys just know how this works. It was interesting that the way he took it was that instead of position rooms getting really clear on the Y for a play call or a game plan, that they feel like the whole defense across position rooms are getting on the same page. Yeah, a lot of really cool stuff there from Adden Dirty. There was one more clip I wanted to play from him talking about Mr. Fowler and this is him talking about a great version of Dante. When I've seen guys play in this league and they not bounce around but they play different
teams and they play at a high level with different teams and they own a role. When they get around guys that want to do things together and want to do things the right way it energizes them and I see that in Dante. I see he's got around like Laura again, Leo, J.R. Chenna, D.H.A. all these guys and they go for it. They compete for snaps but they respect each other's plays enough to say like you can go like you're on and I'm going to celebrate your success and that kind of grows you. It allows you to be the best version of yourself and I'm seeing that in Dante. I love that from Adden Dirty and I want to play you one more clip related to that from Ernest Jones also talking about Dante Fowler. I think there's a chance Dante Fowler becomes one of the sleeper additions that didn't necessarily know what you were getting and you get something pretty big. Let me pull this up from the Ernest Jones conversation.
Okay, here we go. Where did that go? All right. So did we get there? All right, let's play this from Ernest Jones. We can do multiple things. We can do multiple things. We can, you know, you put him in certain positions to dictate. That wasn't really what I was looking for. We lost what I was looking for on that one but he said that Dante Fowler brings a ton of energy and there we go. Okay, I think this is it. That's it. I got this queued up properly. Appreciate your patience as always guys. DeLaw 2.0, like just energy, just the way he runs to the ball, the way he plays the game,
it's crazy to see how much energy he has and he just gets his going just like DeLaw does and he can rush. He can definitely rush. You can see those bend angles. You see what he's going to bring to us this year so we're excited for him. All right. I'm just excited stuff, man. I'm looking forward to Dante Fowler and what he can bring and this is a guy that had double digit sacks not that long ago, a couple years ago. And when I talk to him, he feels like he's in a really good situation with the defensive tackles he's playing next to and can't argue with that. So those are some sounds. I have some numbers I want to share with you guys in just a second. Before we do that, I want to check in. Let's hear from our sponsors real quick. What's better than watching college football? I shared some of these graphics with you guys yesterday. Let me put these in a place that will be a little easier to see. I'll probably pull chat off for this.
When we look at, this will all get put up on my tail to tape, which I'll probably write tomorrow morning or something like that. When you look from a DVOA perspective, again, this is looking from last year's team and last year's data. The C-OX were clearly the better defense, better team overall, and the Patriots were the better offense. They were the third in DVOA on offense. The C-OX were 10th. Special teams, C-OX were a much better DVOA team there. One of the things I wanted to get into is the style difference. This is the C-OX offensive style. Play action for the C-OX, 28% of their dropbacks that was 8th in the NFL. They were a high play action team last year. The Patriots were pretty good play action defense.
Second in the NFL. The C-OX were 6th in the NFL and EPA per play when using play action. The Patriots were 2nd in the NFL defending play action. That's an interesting one. Shotgun, C-OX were 30th in the NFL on Shotgun rate. There's something we've talked about before that's a difference with the Kyle Shanahan and maybe with the Brian Flurry version of this offense that Clint Kubiak used to understand a ton. They were very rarely in Shotgun. Technically they were in Shotgun more often than under center, obviously, but relative to the rest of the league, they were in Shotgun a lot less. They were only 15th in the NFL and EPA per play when they were in Shotgun. The Patriots were very good at defending Shotgun plays. Use of screens, screen game last year, C-OX were 20th in the percentage of plays that were screen plays on offense. Only 15th in the EPA per play on those plays. But, as I've mentioned earlier, the C-OX made a real upgrade in their screen game as
the year went on and Ken Walker was a big, big part of that. I am really curious to see if Jardin Price is going to be a big part of that in this game. Watch out for that. I think he's really shown up as a receiver. Even though that was a question coming out of college because he didn't have a lot of receptions, I think that's going to be a strength of his game. The Patriots were pretty good at defending the screen play. C-OX did not run a ton of no-huddle, but when they did up the pace, they were fourth in the NFL in EPA per play in up tempo plays. The Patriots struggled when teams used tempo. They were 17th in defending no-huddle. I am curious how tempo is going to play into the Bryan Flurry offense. We'll get our first few of that. Now motion, unfortunately, the data that I get from Sumer and from F-T-N does not have a way to show EPA per play on motion, plays when there's motion being used. But I just saw, sorry, I got distracted by this from David Pinkie.
Lucky Brooks goes from picking the C-OX to finish 7 and 10 to now ranking them second and is ranking, saying they have the pieces to repeat. Well, you know what? I'm okay with that, Bucky. Welcome back to the right side of the force on that one. Anyway, so the point being with the motion, I can't tell you how efficient they were with motion, but the C-OX were 13th in the NFL in use of motion last year. Someone's asking me to define motion. Motion is when players are in movement at the snap. Not when they move before the snap and then get aligned. That's a shift, but if they are in motion at the snap, so a jet sweep or a toss crack, like any of those things, that can be a motion on a run game or a pass play. So that's the definition of motion here. And then a little bit here in terms of run and the way the C-OX ran. The outside zone, 11th highest rate of percentage of runs that were outside zone.
They're only 14th in the NFL in outside zone, EPA per rush. When they went and used, you know, gap scheme stuff, man play, man blocking schemes or power blocking schemes, that was not something they did as much and they were not as good at it. The Patriots interestingly, 29th in the NFL and defending inside zone running plays last year. I'm going to be curious to see because they have these big defensive tackles. I'm kind of surprised that that's where they struggled, but that could be point at a linebacker issue for the Patriots. So I am, that's one thing I'm kind of curious to see because their linebackers have changed this year. You know, they do have Robert Spillin and Christian Ellis, you know, Jack Gibbons was getting plays last year. So who knows how that's going to affect, but I thought that was kind of interesting
there. When you go and look at the Patriots offensive style, the Patriots, they have not as much play action. 21st in the NFL and the amount of play action. They were very good when they did it. The Patriots were very good at defending it. Shotgun, they were also not a heavy shotgun team, 23rd in the NFL, more than the Seahawks, but not as much of shotgun and the Seahawks were good at defending that as well. And then screen plays very rarely. They didn't use a lot of screen plays. 25th in the NFL and use of screens. They were fourth in the NFL in EPA per play when using the screen. The Seahawks did struggle at times. 14th in defending the screen. No huddle, really rare. Not something that they did a lot. 29th in the NFL in terms of up tempo. And the Seahawks were very good in handling up tempo.
Didn't use a ton of motion. 23rd in the NFL in terms of using motion on their plays. From a run perspective and run concepts, they had a lot more of their plays were kind of power. Man, more than a zone run, they're more of a man power scheme. So that were third in the NFL and the percentage of the runs that were man scheme runs, but they weren't very good at it. 23rd in EPA per rush. The Seahawks were very good at defending pretty much every kind of rush. And so man was number one for them. Then outside zone, then inside zone, then power. They were 30 second in the NFL and running inside zone in terms of EPA per rush. They were fourth in outside zone. And I think some of this is Travion Henderson, who probably will not play in this game. So we'll just see how this affects. Ramandre Stevenson will almost certainly get a lot of this. By the way, these are, these numbers are all including playoffs.
The ones that I've been showing here. So I think there's some interesting tidbits in there. And when I look at this from a Seahawks perspective, and I'm looking at it from really the, if I'm looking at it from a run game point of view, like this is the Seahawks run game matched up against the Patriots run defense. This run defense just wasn't that good, even with those great defensive tackles. Now they added Dremont Jones, who might help in setting the edge. I don't know how much it's going to help in pass rush. But I do have questions about their ability to handle the Seahawks run game. This might end up being the biggest key to the game for the Seahawks to keep their defense off the field, to keep the Patriots on their heels and to control this game. If the Seahawks can run the ball more efficiently than they did most of last year.
If they can run the ball as efficiently as they did in the Super Bowl, for example, then I think this game is a pretty certain win for the Seahawks. If their efficiency numbers are like what we're seeing here in the 20s and not very high from a success rate or EPA rate, then yeah, it's going to, I think it could be a dangerous game. So those are just a couple of things I wanted to share with you guys, relative to some numbers that I've been tracking. Let me check out Super Chats. As I know, there are some here. Joey Walker says, time to bring back Nino. Yeah, we will have Nino on the show. He'll either be on tomorrow or I might do Wednesday. We haven't figured that out. I'll talk to him about it. He will definitely have Matt Hasselbach will be on with me tomorrow looking forward to that 8 a.m. Pacific time. Hock Scoots, member of 23 months. What hat were you wearing that Sam complimented? I was wearing this hat, which you can get at dodocoffee.co. Codehawk blogger 12 gets you 12% off that hat.
Matt and Beaverton, member of 24 months, thanks Matt, says, what do you think the shotgun to utter center ratio will be Wednesday? You reviewed Sam numbers and gun and they're not great. Last year, San Francisco was 53% shotgun. I don't know. I'm curious on this one because Sam is one of the best under center quarterbacks in the NFL. When I dug into the shotgun numbers, he actually was not that bad in shotgun. It was really shotgun in red zone. When Sam was running shotgun in the red zone, he was not good. So I don't know. I want to see what Brian Flurry does. I think this team is usually at its best under center, but who knows. We'll find out. So I don't have a good guess. I really don't. I wish I had a better answer for you. You will learn together. Aloha Patrick gives us some jewels of football. Thank you for that. We got a gold coin from Aloha Patrick as well. And then some sunshine. We'll appreciate all that from you, Aloha Patrick. Let me check Venmo.com slash Hawk blogger for any Venmo superchats that I might have missed.
And let me pull this up real quick. All right. And reminder to all of you that I will be picking up Rob Satan to go to practice today. We might do some a show. Who knows. You never know with him. And then we'll have real Hawk Talk tonight at five with the fellas. So that'll be fun. We've got Joey Hamilton with a super chat here. He says what an absolute marathon of a season preview show. Thank you. Well, thank you for your thank you, Joey. And then Rob Olson says thank you for all your work looking forward to another season listening to you and your great guests. Well, appreciate you guys for the nice words there. Yeah, we will find out if there's anything I see someone saying Christian Barmore is not 100% we started with the show with that. I do feel like just to repeat here for people getting here late. I don't think Tiocaud is going to play. I don't think Nicki Minaj is going to play. I don't think Travian Henderson is going to play. I do think that the sea ox are going to bring up Rodney Thomas.
And then there's a question of whether it's Dan Thenebell and AJ Finley as the other two, not sure. But I do think they'll probably bring up two safeties for this game given the state of things. I do expect Nicki Minaj to potentially be a better option for the week two game. I also think it's probably a better likelihood that Trayvon digs will be ready for week two than week one. So you know what? Like we're a couple days away. Tomorrow, I told you the bunch of stuff having today. Tomorrow, as I said, Matt Hasselbach will be on the show. Well, the sea ox collective later in the evening. So it's a Hasselbach Tuesday as it was all last year. Quandray digs will be with us. I haven't decided when quandray. I might have quandray after. Like we might do after the game with quandray digs. But still working on figuring that out.
