So folks, I had a nice nice time, full night sleep, had visions of first place in the NFC West, dancing in my mind with a sprinkling of Rams crisis week one crisis for the Rams already. It could have gone better like the first two days of the NFL season, but it couldn't have gone a lot better than it did. And yes, I will talk about it wasn't just that the Rams got their doors blown off. The 49ers also are a team to pay attention to. I'll talk about that. But what I wanted to kind of do is sort through the news and information that we have after two games, but two games that happen

to involve three of the four NFC West teams and the three teams that a lot of people expect to be battling for the division title. So I think there's there's some things to pay attention to. It's also week one, and I'm going to not spend a bunch of time with the caveating of it's only week one. You guys know that I know that I'm factoring that in as I kind of evaluate the things. And today's episode is not really going to be about here's the thing we now know it's going to be here are some things that have my attention. And I think are worth keeping an eye on after these games because if they turn into patterns over time, they could have a significant influence over this season. So first just some general reactions. And I'm going to get into some numbers and we'll kind of walk around this these first two games and see what we find. I mean first things first, I think

you're already seeing the kind of PR arm of the Rams spin this and look for ways to like the my read of what's going on the phenomenon of the Rams is that they are almost wholly a creation of national media and the fact that they're a large market and the fact that the NFL wants the Rams to be a story. And I mean genuinely they should be with what they did this off season. So I don't argue that. But there's not there's not like a rabid fan base. There's not I don't sense a lot of football people like true football people across the different things that want to talk about the Rams as much as they get talked about. So what's pretty clear? I mean, you've got Sean McVey on 60 minutes and you've got all these folks across all the major platforms talking about them because there's a little bit of an incestuous relationship. And so what are they saying this morning? They're saying

predictable things. Yeah, maybe the Rams did need to rethink their travel plans. They're saying, yeah, well, this was a good wake up call for the Rams. And this is going to get them to focus. They are saying, Chris Shula already getting that a little bit from Dan Erlovsky. Sean McVey's best bud that I don't know what we saw from Chris Shula. This is a problem shifting blame away from the head coach because it's never Sean McVey. And even Sean McVey last night, I played the sound of his press conference and he said the words, not going to make any excuses, not going to, you know, 49ers deserve credits, you know, it starts accountability starts with me. He said all the right, honestly, all the right words, I didn't believe any of it. It all sounded like here's what I know I'm supposed to say, but what I really believe is, you know, something else. So that's that's kind of the

the PR spin that's going on right now. I've heard in regards to this notion that it's a good thing that the Rams got punched in the mouth in week one. And it's going to let them kind of refocus and reorient. That could be true. I mean, I thought about that watching the game yesterday was this could be something that helps wake them up. But I don't think that just being more motivated is the issue with what we saw from the Rams. There's some other things going on there that whether they're motivated or not are concerning if you are someone hoping for the Rams to deliver on all this promise. So yeah, that's kind of what's going on there. I do if I was a 49ers fan, which you guys know I'm not, my reaction would be I cannot believe that our team just destroyed the super team 27 to 7 and 99% of the conversation is about the team

that scored seven like that that is just like quintessential Rams right now, which is they are going to be the topic whether they're doing really well or they're doing really poorly. The other thing that Jeff Simmons reminded me of last night and was a joyous reminder at that is that if some craziness happens like crazy crazy, let's just say the Rams implode and the Rams just end up with a bad record, which seems very very unlikely, but let's just dream for a second. They wouldn't get a top 10 pick because they've traded it away. So they have more gaged their future to win the Super Bowl this year and you are free to root for their absolute demise with no repercussions honestly for them getting to wins. You know, like it doesn't matter how high it would help the Cleveland Browns because they have the draft pick, but it would not help the Rams. So

those are just some top things off the cuff, but let's talk about the Seahawks as well. This is all about the NFC West and the things that kind of have my attention because I think we're so familiar with the Seahawks storylines and I'll come back to those. I'm going to start with the Rams and 49ers storylines that got my attention from last night and then we'll go back to the Seahawks stuff. So one thing that I was kind of curious about is it's one thing to lose your first game of the season. It's another thing to get blown out by 20 points in the first game of the season. The Seahawks, the Patriots both lost week one games last year including the Patriots losing to the Raiders and both of them were in the Super Bowl. Obviously one of them won it. But I went back and searched last night for when's the last time a Super Bowl winner,

when's the last time a Super Bowl winner has started the season by losing by at least 20 points. It's been a while. The 2003 Patriots are the only team as far as history as far as I could find throughout history. The 2003 Patriots are the only team to lose their opening game by 20 plus points and then go on to win the Super Bowl. So the Rams are already, you know, you can say, hey, it's good they got punched in the mouth, but history doesn't really show that getting punched in the mouth week one is a good indicator that you're going to become a Super Bowl winner. But if I was ranking, if I was just like watching that game as if I was a Rams fan and wanted the best things for them, the things that we concern me, I don't know if they're in order, but at

least what we get my attention. Number one was Matt Stafford. The conversation about Miles Garrett will get to, but Matt Stafford was way, way, way off target in this game. And I want to pull up here, let me see if I can get it easily, but his on target throws were a few and far between. So that, I mean, he looked, he was like, and part of the reason was that he was under a lot of pressure, but looking at this last night, he had only, he had nine pass attempts that were when he was pressured, he had 16 that were not in the snaps that he was pressured, he was two for nine

for 20 yards, 2.2 yards per throw. So you're talking about a 36% pressure rate. When he was not pressured, he was 13 of 16 for 135 yards, 8.4 yards per attempt, that's at least more defensible. But I just, I'm trying to find his, if they have his on target right here somewhere, and I'm not seeing it, I'll see if I can get it from FTN in their stuff. But this was, this was a really concerning performance if you are wanting Matt Stafford to be anything close to an MVP level player. And that's the thing I want to kind of get back to whatever his numbers were in this. You kind of for hint, for there ams to be a super team, part of that was an

MVP level quarterback, who was really maybe the best player in football last year, but at least the best quarterback in football. That is not what he was, is not what he was yesterday. So that's concern number one. Concern number two related to that is if you look at the the Rams, the way they've been constructed, it is their offensive line and how they yeah, they still do not have, FTN still doesn't have 2026. We have Sumer Sports as 2026 data, but FTN is not updated yet. So that offensive line is a concern because this is how the Rams are constructed to just have a really kick ass offensive line. Well, not only did they give up a ton of

pressure last night, but they weren't getting, like they couldn't get a goal line sneak with Matt Stafford from like a half a yard line. And this is against a 49ers defensive line that is not stout. Like I like the 49ers defensive line, but not from like they lost Alfred Collins. The other guys that they've got there are okay, but not good. And they weren't able to to manhandle them. So I'm looking here, I mean Warren McClendon Jr. This is a guy that was really pretty good last year and he got worked last night. Let's look at who gave up the most pressures. Kevin Dotson. Also a guy that they count on at right guard gave up five pressures last night. So and then Steve Avela, the other guard who they count on quite a bit, also had a really rough day

pass blocking. So I think that's another storyline for me. Something I'm looking at as well is there are injuries that came out of this game that there's no word on anywhere for the Rams. And most concerning would be both starting linebackers, Omar Spates and Nate Landman, were injured. Spates, I don't have the specifics on what it was. I think let me see if I can pull it up real quick. Spates, I thought was a hip and it's a yeah. I'm not finding anything there. Questionable. I know he's questionable to return and being ruled out. Hip. Yeah, he did have a hip injury. Okay. So Spates had a hip. At least that's what was recorded here. And then what looked like

Nate Landman hit his hand on a helmet. I thought was just a hand injury, but what I've seen is something around shoulder and that his arm was like dangling. If he broke a collarbone or he has some kind of like that could if it's shoulder that could be a serious thing. So if you are out Nate Landman and Omar Spates, you are you're kind of in trouble depth chart wise because the Rams linebackers, I mean you're talking about Sean Dohlack and Grant what's the other guy's name. I think it's Grant Stoddard. So it's it's it's not a deep Rams linebacker room. So sorry guys, I'm trying to look something up while I'm talking and that's why there's all these pauses.

So yeah, it is Grant Stewart. Grant Stewart and Sean Dohlack. So if you're missing those guys, all of a sudden that dream team defense has the entire second level as a big question mark. And that gives offense is something to target. So that's another question. Also, Cam Curl, they're starting safety left with an injury have not heard any updates about that. So that's those are all things that would have my attention. Additionally, let's get to the Miles Garrett thing. As far as Sean McVeigh was told, Miles Garrett was full go and had no injury issues. Miles Garrett was saying that he was not healthy and is just focusing on getting healthy. That's week one. And they're there. So that is not that is not a good sign that Sean McVeigh

has a good feel for what's going on. And it may be his sign that Miles Garrett either is not fully healthy or is not fully bought in like that his his focus here may not be what is what I'd call a championship level focus. We'll find out. But when I watched him play last night, he looked disinterested when he was on the sideline, he looked disinterested. Regardless of his numbers, which the first time since 2018, Miles Garrett has not had a pressure in a game. This is like your guy on defense like defensive player of the year. And he just looked disinterested. You cannot have that even if you're not playing well, even if you're injured, injured, like you cannot have that. So that would be concerning to me big time. And then

like more holistically, the run defense was atrocious. Like the 49ers ran all over the Rams. They had 174 yards rushing averaged almost six yards of carry. And keep in mind that two years ago before the the Rams added Punaford, the story was the Rams run defense was really bad. They could get after the passer, but they had real struggle defending the run. Punaford really helped and some other things helped them clear that up. The 49ers may have done some things in that game that challenge them. I thought Christian McCaffrey as another story line will get two with the 49ers. I thought Christian McCaffrey looked significantly more explosive than he did last year, not back to

what he used to be, but I thought he looked really good. And I thought the way that the 49ers attacked the Rams with motion and movement on those running plays in some misdirection was also really interesting. McCaffrey was 10 carries for 68 yards. Then you had Kaelin Black, 14 carries for 65 yards. So Kaelin Black had more carries in Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey also had five catches for 20 yards. So I think ultimately they had the same amount of touches. Kaelin Black and Christian McCaffrey 15 each. But that's like if the Rams can't stop the run, then they're going to have a real hard time winning a Super Bowl. So that's another thing I'm keeping an eye on. If I go back to the Rams from last year, let me pull open their games from last year and how many games. So yeah, they started the season. Real, this is interesting. The Rams

started the season really strong against the run. They had was this four, four, five, six, six of their first nine games. They held the opponents under 90 yards or under 100 yards rushing. Right. And two of the other games were like 114 and 109. So really like one of the better rushing defenses in football through week 10 last year. After interestingly playing the Seahawks in week 11, the game they won, but they gave up 135 yards rushing to the Seahawks in that game. They gave up 123. The next week to the box, they gave up 164 to the Panthers. They gave up 171 to the Seahawks again. They gave up 219 to the Falcons. And then they got a little bit better after that. But run defense does seem like a little bit of a bell weather for the Rams. And

this did not look like a Rams team set to defend the run. So that'll be another interesting thing to kind of monitor with this team. Other things like on the positive side for the Rams, which I'm sure there's not much, but I thought the run offense looked really good. Blake Korm and Kyron Williams look like a solid duo as they have been. Pukinakua is still a handful. When he gets his hand on the ball, like tackling him, he takes a lot of hits, but he delivers a lot. Other things that were positive for the Rams. I don't think there's that many. And while I was doing that came up with the other negative or the thing that I'm kind of monitoring is that receiver core for the Rams, man. It's Pukinakua and then who? Devonte Adams was a non-factor

in that game. He didn't have a catch until late in the game. He ended up with three catches for 26 yards. Devonte Adams, if he's washed or he is significantly regressed, that receiving core is very thin after Pukinakua. We'll see what happens with Pukinakua. It can he stay healthy? Can he stay at a trouble? Those are the storylines we're already watching coming into the season. So there's a lot of red flags in there for the Rams. Obviously, you're going to get Aaron Donald assuming he doesn't choose to go back to retirement after what he saw. And they, I mean, you'd have to think they're not going to play worse or that poorly each week. But the Matt Stafford thing to me is the biggest story. Like what on earth? What on earth? I do not believe

jet lag was why he played the way he did. I have to think some of it is that the 49ers were able to generate pressure. So how much of that's the Rams offensive line? How much of it is what the 49ers will do? So that's kind of where I was on some of the Rams storylines. By the way, well, I mean, I don't know how much you guys care about this, but a lot was made about how the Rams did their 13 personnel last year, right? And it turns out like last nights, let me pull open. Where is it? There we go. Last night for the Rams, they ran their 13 personnel again. And they did it 37% of the time. So they did it a lot more than most people do. They were in 11

personnel, 56% of the time, all right? So mostly 11, but a lot more 13 than most teams. And as far as performance, they were really good in 13 personnel, five of five and passing 96 yards plus 1.4 EPA per play. That's all good stuff. 11 personnel, negative point 97 EPA per play only completed 55% of their passes 11 for 20 for 56 yards. So when they had three receivers on the field, and again, we talked about the receiver issue or potential issue, they didn't do well. And I think that they also did not handle the pressure very well. Looking about kind of passing like against different coverages, anything particularly like cover three remarkably, the old Pete Carroll cover three

was the was not great. Actually cover six cover three and cover six. So the CX played a lot of cover six against Drake May. But the RAM struggled against both cover three and cover six last night, both had negative EPAs and roughly 50% completion rates. So that's not great. What about one blitz? They were not good when blitz. They were not great when not blitz. So that was not a big piece. This is an interesting one. Early down, laid down. So the RAMs were always a problematic third down team last year. And I didn't, I still don't get why. It just makes no sense to me. But apparently the RAMs avoid that because they are really good on early downs. Well, at least

from this game last night, they weren't great on early downs either. They had a negative EPA on early downs. So anyway, those are some of the things that kind of got my attention looking at at the Rams. Looking at the 49ers flipping it around. One, I thought that their defense looked fantastic. I did this show earlier this season where I said our people overlooking the 49ers. And I know Evan has a totally different perspective on them. But I really liked what they did this off season for the most part. And I think they addressed a lot of their shortfalls. And a lot of what was going to matter with the 49ers was the health of their superstars. And I think they got pretty good news on that front last night. I think Trent Williams played a good game. He's a really key like foundational element of that team. I thought Christian McCaffrey looked

good. I thought Fred Warner looked like Fred Warner. I thought Dre Greenlock looked good, not necessarily the Dre Greenlock of old, but he looked good. Nick Bosa looked good. He didn't look dominant, but he was a difference maker. The only guy that I thought of their stars that did not look right was George Kittle. He looked either not healthy really yet or just a little cooked. He was slow. He was not the same explosive player that he's been. So that would be the only like of those guys. But you've got to be excited if you were a 49ers fan about the way Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, Dre Greenlock, those guys looked. Now, OSSA, their new edition, the guy that I've talked you, I think it was maybe could be argued for a return like return on investment wise, the best

value ad of the offseason for any team was the 49ers getting OSSA, the defensive tackle. He had four quarterback hits last night. He led all the defense in that. At five pressures total. This is a guy that they did not have anyone that created interior pressure for the 49ers last year. Now, if you have him on the interior and you have Nick Bosa on the edge, then you've got something. I also thought Grayson Houghton, their mid-round pick, defensive tackle. I thought he had some moments. Didn't look great, but had some moments. And I thought he on white had some moments. So from a past rush perspective, I thought that group looked pretty good. I think the run defense is a real issue for the 49ers or at least it

looks like it could be a real issue for the 49ers. So, past rush, improved run defense, question mark. Then secondary wise, I thought the amateur Lenore did not look great in this game. As much as I like trolling on the amateur Lenore and him being J.S. N's biggest fan, I do respect the fact that he is a good corner in most cases. I didn't think he looked great in this game. I thought Renardo Green actually looked like the better corner of the two. He had, I think, a bad penalty called against him, honestly, but he also had an interception. But Lenore, to me, did not look great. I think the 49ers secondary, there's some question marks there. I thought the 49ers were really hitting hard. I thought Jaiier Brown had a number of big hits.

I thought there were some moments. The safety is in general. I thought Marquis Seagal had a really nice game and had some big hits. I think they were punishing whoever was coming forward. Even if the Rams were getting yardage, they were getting hit once they got upfield. Those were the things that stood out from the 49ers defensively. Offensively, Mike Evans, to me, he looks like a better version of Joanne Jennings. Now, I know Mike Evans is way better than Joanne Jennings career-wise, but I'm saying at this stage of Mike Evans career with where he is physically. He looks like a high quality possession receiver. A guy you can count on for third down, contested catches, red zone, contested catches, and that's a valuable role. I don't think it's taking over games the way he used

to, but I think it's a guy that is going to be a positive for them as long as he's available to play. I thought Debo Samuel looked fine. I don't think he looked like, oh my god, this guy's a game record, but he has some carries out of the backfield. I thought he had some screen catches, looked dynamic enough. He does not look cook. He has nothing left. He does not look like the game changer he once was, but he looks like he'll be a positive for them. I think the injury to Dejan's dribbling, we'll see what's going to come of that, but that's got to be a concern for them because the receiver depth is not great. I thought that Marcus Robinson had a nice game and he'll get more opportunities, but Debo Samuel is a very specific type of receiver. You can't just run him out there as your number two. I don't think you can really run out Mike Evans and Debo Samuel as your top two or Mike Evans and Marcus Robinson. I don't think that that's a tenable receiving

core for a full season, especially if George Kiddles not going to be George Kiddles. I think the receiving core is a question mark for the 49ers, but Brock Purti, I hate it when he does his duggie dances and all that kind of stuff, but I have a lot of respect for Brock Purti. I think he plays with a lot of Moxie. I think that he is a playmaker when plays breakdown. When plays breakdown for Matt Stafford, he's going to be in trouble usually. I think Purti is, he can be a real playmaker. I think the challenge there is he also is a gunslinger and his turnover rate has increased. His interception rate has increased every season in the NFL. He has now thrown an interception in, I think it was five straight games. I have this on my feet, so let me put this up. Yes. He's trying to pick in six straight games, including

including the playoffs last year. He has 18 interceptions in his last 15 games. While everyone focuses on the Sam Darnal turnover problem, Brock Purti's got a turnover problem. But I also think he is a handful. He's just a handful. He can get out of pressure. His pressure to sack rate is one of the best in the NFL because he is able to find ways. He was able to run, create that way. He's like a better version of Drake May to be honest. Like, now Drake May is probably a little bit more explosive downfield. But I think Brock Purti is a little bit more dangerous right now. So I continue to think he's a good quarterback. I don't worry that much about it as a Seahawks fan in particular because he was as hot as hot could be coming into a week 18 last year. And Mike McDonald and the Seahawks defense have

that offense locked down. Like, there was nothing for them to do there. So that's the part where are the 49ers going to be a better run team this year? That's a bigger deal than Brock Purti independently. And I think you're going to be able to count on Brock Purti giving you chances to intercept passes, no matter when he's playing. I think he will give you opportunities. And his record against Mike McDonald in terms of turnovers is nightmare-ish. So while I think this is important storyline to track, I think the 49ers look like a team that can be dangerous on offense and defense. As good as they looked in this game, I think the biggest storyline was really the way their defense looked. And I think the impact of Fred Warner and Nick Bosa primarily. But then I thought that some of the safety play and Drake Greenland, some of those other guys, Osa, like whatever, like that could be a that could be a top five defense. Like, I

don't think that's crazy. It could be, I think top 10 is very realistic. And this was a defense last year that while its numbers were not terrible, it was pretty bad. So I think they can be a lot better. And then that lowers the bar for how good the offense has to be. But I still, it's hard for me to look at the 49ers and be like, yeah, super bowl contender. Maybe they'll be in the mix. But the question marks in terms of their receiving core. If they're if their run game gets shut down, I just don't know that that offense can survive. So that's kind of like that's my impression watching that piece unrelated to any of the football side. I think there was a comment from Josh Cashman last night that I think was very interesting and true. If you compare the Thursday night game to the Wednesday night game. And the amount of pomp and circumstance and the amount of

like respect paid to like the halftime show even like they they had this huge blowout half-time show like Jonas Brothers and all this stuff, right? This see ox opened the season. The super bowl champs opened the season had sound garden playing at halftime. It didn't wasn't even shown on NBC. It the point the Josh made is it felt like the NFL wanted this to be the opener and treated it like the opener and that the Seahawks game was in a obligatory afterthought. And if you look at both games, that is how it felt. That is how it felt. So I don't think it's an imagine. I don't think people are imagining it when they say that there's like a bias both like against the Northwest and that team and and for the Rams. So let's see here.

Just making sure I didn't miss anything. So those are those are kind of the main storylines I took away from the 49ers and from the Rams. Let's talk about the Seahawks and where the storylines are there and what's worth paying attention to. I'm going to also check in with some super chats. So I'm not in that camp that has been ignoring the 49ers or saying that they're going to be really bad. I think the 49ers are a very challenging team to

evaluate. Talked about it with Brian Baldinger when he was on for the season preview show last Friday. And it's a team that's got a ton of top shelf talent. It's got age and injury issues. I think they've got some question marks. I wonder about how they're going to hold up across an entire season. So I don't worry at all. No, I'm not worried about honestly anything at this point. But do I think that they could be is there a world where the 49ers could be the team that are the biggest challenge to the Cocks in the division? Yes. There is a world where that's the case. And there is a world where people overlook the 49ers because the Cocks beat them 41 to 6 last year. The team didn't have Fred Warner and Nick Bosa and George Kittle and a bunch of other stuff. So I still think the Cocks are the better team. I don't really worry too much about that.

But I do think the 49ers could be good. Brandon C12 says what does Rahim know about the Rams? The Falcon picked off Stafford three times last year too. Yeah. So Rahim Morris is the defensive coordinator for the 49ers. He was the head coach of the Falcons last year and he did coach defensive coordinator for the Rams a few years back. So he certainly has some insight into how the Rams play things and maybe some ways to get aftermath Stafford. I think that's worth paying attention to if you're not looking at that film and you're a Seahawk, you're crazy. You got to look at that film and see if there's anything to learn there. But as much as I think Rahim Morris is part of it, I think that the personnel was a big part of it as well and the 49ers deserve credit for that. All right, Noah Burman has been a member for two and a half years. So Brian, thanks for all your hard work and coverage of the Hawks. Have you considered a weekly in season best of enemies

show with Grant Cohn? Well, no, not really. Not really. Grant and I talk regularly and I'm just enjoying him having his star rise in Australia. I think it's pretty amazing to watch that story. I think it's the best story coming out of this whole trip. It's amazing what's happened with him there. For people that don't know, he's become this huge Australian rules football phenomenon because he's been commentating on it and they think it's hilarious. And he has all these strong grant takes that are based off of very little information. But they have now, even though he's flying back from Australia, they're going to fly him back to Australia for a specific AFL championship game or something like that. He was on the today show down there. He is like literally like a national phenomenon. It's very, very cool. But no, I don't think we're going to do a show like that. We will preview 49ers games. But yeah, at least at this point, I don't think

that's likely to happen. Revenger 32 says, why I get a feeling this year 11 wins will be enough to win the division. I think the NFC West won't be as dominant as last year and more evenly contested. I think our Hawks will be more strong in the playoffs. I don't think that's crazy. It's a tougher schedule. The NFC West played the AFC South and the NFC South last year. Those are two of the weakest divisions in football. It is a difference when you're going up against Carolina and the Falcons, the box, those teams, the Titans versus going up against the teams that see actually going up against this year. It's the NFC East is a tougher division. The Eagles and even the giants and the Cowboys. There's just more to deal with there. I think there could be fewer wins. I think teams could beat up on each other a little bit more. But I think we're too early to say that for sure.

But it's possible. Takeer 610 says ironically, it was looking, it was LA looking like Jed York in Australia. I don't know if I want to dissect that one. Revengers says any idea why a Shaheed returns are too relaxed. I don't know. I talked about this before in the post game show. I think we don't know what the rules are that he's supposed to follow in terms of when to fair catch. The one most, they're the most egregious fair catch was on a punt on the right side of the field where it looked like he had a big alley to run up. On that play, the gunner was nearly to him when the ball was still in the air. It's possible that he has a rule that if he can see a gunner out of the corner of his eyes that he's supposed to fair catch. I don't know. I'm not making it up because I just don't know. I'll just leave that open that it might be he might be doing what he's

instructed, but there were some yards that were left on the field in that game. Mr. Northwest says HB, do you think the Niners are that good or the Rams were just that off after seeing Warner Boas that Evans Greenland. I'm worried about how we will match. I can't abide that kind of perspective. Do not worry. Like worry is a silly thing to do when you've got the best team in football, the best roster in football, the best coach in football, the best GM in football. Like other teams worry about the Seahawks, other teams worry about going against Leonard Williams and Riley Mills and Byron Murphy and Marcus Lawrence and Dante Fowler and Derek Hall and Ernest Jones and Drake Thomas and Tyrese Knight and Devon Witherspoon and Julian Love. Nicki Minaj has named been on the field yet. Other teams worry about dealing with Jackson Smith and Jigba and Cooper Cupp and Rashid Shaheed and AJ Barnard and I like do not worry about other teams. But do you have to respect

and do you have to anticipate where there's going to be teams that are challenges like true challenges? Yeah, absolutely. And the 49ers could be one of those teams. And I think if they stay healthy, we'll be one of those teams. So yeah, I think respect and worry are two different things. I do not think the Seahawks need to worry about any team. That's just that's the way I my mentality looking at this team. This is not the roster or the coaching staff that needs to operate out of fear in any situation. So let's talk about like where it is with the Seahawks because I think that there's a few storylines with obviously the Sam Donald thing is going to be a storyline. We're going to monitor that. But there's a couple other things that kind of got my attention in that

game. And we're going to have to keep monitoring one positive. I think the run game looked really good, really promising. I thought that was as healthy of a run game as we've seen from the Seahawks in some time. And in fact, I'm kind of curious. I wonder if I can pull this up. What's the best way to do this? All right, hang with me because I want to see from an EPA per rush perspective where that game would have ranked for the Seahawks from last year. Like from just an efficiency standpoint, where did that rank? Seahawks EPA per rush in each game in 2025 and week one in

2026. All right, let me see if I can pull that up quickly enough that I can give you the answer. I should be able to. But what I liked about it was that I think they were some early some early down efficiency there. And I think I can probably pull that up from Sumer. But here we go. All right, so that seems questionable. I don't know if I trust these numbers. So let me look at Sumer real quick. We're going to look at Sumer. We're going to look at the game with the Seahawks. And let's look at their running their rush game a little bit closer. All right. So if we look at run concept, so inside zone and outside zone where their primary runs that they did, no surprise there.

But let's get to run game performance. Okay, run game performance. So interestingly, success rates. So there are negative one rush EPA per play. That's kind of surprising to me. 57 of their yards were yards after contact. It's also kind of interesting. They're best running personnel group was 12 personnel when they had two tight ends. They were a plus point to EPA per rush. A positive rush EPA is really good. It's very rare. Most writing plays are going to be negative EPA plays. They're interesting. There's something that's dragging down their EPA that doesn't show up in its specific personnel

grouping. Now, if they the other thing is when they were going up, let's see, when they were going up against, okay, so their best rushing performance was against an even box. So this is when the Patriots had a base defense out on the field. When the Patriots went light box when they had like, nickel or dime, the sea ox actually were less effective running against those. So that's kind of curious. As far as where they were most effective outside zone was their best 12 attempts 57 yards. So I think that showed up. Anyone could have seen that. If you look by which gap was the best. The D gap, which is outside of the tight end

was the best. That was a positive EPA eight rushes for 45 yards. Oh, and then downs. This is what I wanted to see. Okay, so this is it. This is what I have, this finally is what I was looking for. Early down rushes for the sea ox against the Patriots plus 0.07 yards 19 carries for 92 yards. So I was so confused seeing all this negative rush data. If you just are looking at early down rushes, the sea ox were very good. And if I look at this compared to like last year for looking at let's look at last year's teams and rush EPA. Okay. Like is that oh wait, wait, wait, that's week 18 or something was way off. All right. Yes, the number one EPA rush team in the NFL last year was the Indianapolis Colts with

a 0.05 plus 0.05. So you're talking about the sea hawks with a 0.07 EPA per rush on early downs. Essentially, they were more efficient on early downs in this game than the most efficient running team in the NFL last year. So I think that that's a storyline. Obviously, I kind of went down to rabbit's hole because that's what I do with these numbers just to kind of test what I believe to be true versus what the numbers say to be true. I think that was that was a big story and something I'm going to be continuing to watch is early down running. Other things that I think are storylines for the sea hawks. So if you look at there was, well, let me pull it up here. Shh. Got it here somewhere. Where did it go? There it is. Okay.

So as far as personnel rates go, Brian Flurry kind of spammed 12 personnel. He did a lot of two tight end stuff. And I can kind of show you guys this in a screen share. So you can see what I'm seeing. But this is a report I've pulled together that I think you guys might find interesting, but maybe not. I don't know. We will see. So here is. Here's this report that is my my eyes only, but I'm giving it to you guys as well. So this is this is looking at personnel usage by the sea hawks and the blue bar is week one against the Patriots. The orange bar is the Super Bowl against the Patriots and the teal bar or whatever color that is is the sea hawks 2025 average season average. So the blue bar kind of compared to those

other two you can kind of see how the sea hawks approached things in this game versus last year. So from an 11 personnel perspective, they were essentially identical to their usage last year. 41 42%. Okay. But 12 personnel jumped from what was a season average of 30% last year to 54% against the Patriots. Now, we don't know if that is a new thing that is going to be part of how things go or if this was a specific game plan for the Patriots. Don't know. The other thing that's interesting here and I want to double check some of the data, but these two back sets. Obviously, this to me, there's something wrong because I know I saw a fullback in the game and it's showing no fullback rep. So that's a bug somewhere, but the other ones do match up with other data I've

seen. This is also another way to look at how those different groups did. So this looks at those personnel groupings across the same cuts the game against Patriots, the Super Bowl against Patriots in 2025 season. And if you look at 11 personnel in 2025, this was a 66% pass rate personnel grouping for the sea hawks that increased to 70% in week one. All right. They did not pass well. How do they? 11 personnel did not do well. But 12 personnel, which was their money personnel grouping last year. The pass rate actually dipped a little bit, but was pretty close. 42% pass rate. So they're pretty much a 60, 40 run to pass. I think I personally love when teams are more closer to 50, 50.

Sea ox were last year or 55, well, they were 55 run to 45 pass. But the EPA per play was similar. Sea ox were plus 0.15 and 12 personnel last year, sorry, 12 personnel versus plus 0.13 in this game against the Patriots. And their success rate was actually better, 58% versus 49% from last year. EPA per pass was down a little bit. EPA per run was roughly the same. And then 21 personnel, yeah, don't have as much data on there, but that's another one to keep up. A couple of other things. Play action rate was up 35% play action rate for the sea hawks in this game against the Patriots. That is up from what was 28% last year. Again, these are just first game, not a pattern yet,

but just something to keep an eye on. But the EPA with play action plus 0.44, very, very good. That's even better than their play action last year, plus 0.3. This is not, this is just take, it's not a strong take. But I think your EPA on play action and your effectiveness of play action to some degree is an indicator of your play collar. Because the more effective you are at sequencing your plays, dressing up your plays, making plays look the same, the better your play action, the more effective your play action should be. If you just do lame play action like Ryan Grub, a couple years ago, they would run play action and they'd run it in ways that they never ran the ball in that direction or out of that set. So, defense didn't respect the play action because it looked like a pass play because they'd seen them never run the ball from those looks. I thought Brian Flurry absolutely has shown in

preseason and in this game the ability to dress up a play to make it look the same and to have the play action be more effective. So, early positive indicator there, I think, about Brian Flurry as a play collar. Screen rate, I also was kind of curious about the COX did not run a lot of screens in this game. 3.8% screen rate, that's down from 7.5% last year. I think that we'll see if that's game plan or something else, but that's something you'd expect to be a bigger part of this offense. 3.8% screen rate, that's down from 7.5% last year, average depth of target was low 6.4 yards down over like a yard and a half from last year. Part of that drew lock, backup quarterback, part of that is potentially the game plan week one, all that kind of stuff. That was that was that. Under center versus shotgun rate. Pretty stable from last year I would

say 50% under center in this game against the Patriots, 55% last year on average. So down a little bit, but not crazy. So not a huge change there. And this is something that I was curious about relative to what we talked about with, with the 49ers offense versus the Seahawks offense. So we don't have motion rates. This is not necessarily, I'll have soon. I think it's because FTN doesn't have their data quite yet. And then, yeah, as far as the type of runs, zone runs. So those were the things that I felt like were some storylines that caught my attention for the Seahawks statistically. Higher level storylines, I would say are, I don't Riley Mills,

I want Riley Mills on the field more. I know that's going to come at the expense of somebody else. But I really liked what I saw from Riley Mills. And he got 16 snaps in this game. You had had blender Williams getting 49 snaps. You had Byron Murphy getting 50 snaps. You had Jaren Reed getting 34 snaps. I have a huge fan of Jaren Reed. I'm not totally sure that the team is better off with him in the game than Riley Mills right now. Just something I'm watching. I'm not declaring, but I think Riley Mills should be on the field for more than 16 snaps. I guess is my point. I liked what I saw from him. Other storyline here is like a quintessential Seahawks storyline, a quintessential Mike McDonald storyline. What did we come into last year

from a defensive side having the biggest question marks about? Really, it was the inside line backer group. It was like, okay, we got on his Jones, but who else? Tyrese Knight had been injured during training camp. He had been kind of up and down this season before as a starter, Drake Thomas had played some some snaps, but certainly wasn't a guy that you could say, like for sure, this guy is an up and comeer. He had Patrick O'Connell, he had Chaz Serrat. It was a question mark. And that being a massive strength of the team, like they had inside linebackers for days, and they still do. The cornerback room may do the same thing this year. That was the room that had the most question marks coming into this season. The Seahawks seem to agree. They spent a six round pick, which is not nothing next year to acquire Avery Smith as a corner. They sign Trayvon Diggs, they sign Terry and Arnold, right? That all happened in an 11-day span.

Well, they also drafted three corners, Julian Neal and Michael Danesby and Andre Fuller. Neal is on the active roster, Fuller and Danesby are on the practice squad. So now, what happens if Josh Job, Nea and my Appritchet, Devon Witherspoon looked quite good in this game? You could make the argument, I'm not going to make it. You could make the argument that Devon Witherspoon was the least impressive of the three cornerbacks for the Seahawks in this game. The fact that that's even something you could say out loud is just a sign of how good news it was for Job and for Nea and my Appritchet. But now you're in a situation where, okay, well, if Trayvon Diggs comes, he's ready to play. What do you do with him? Is he going to be elevated? I don't know. Does he move on? I don't know. If and when Terry and Arnold comes back,

how does that, where does he fit? I'm not saying it's not, you wouldn't be happy to have more talent there. But that's without even talking about Julian Neal. You've already got Avery Smith and you got the two guys on the practice squad. That's all of a sudden could start looking like one of the deeper units on this team. And if that's the case, then do the Seahawks start looking to trade some of the depth at that cornerback position. Keep an eye on that. Like that's something the Seahawks have a lot of potential depth now at the cornerback spot could mean that there are some guys available for trade. So that has that has my eyes on it to some extent. Safety almost similar, right? Like Nicki Minaj's out, Tio Kada's out, Rodney Thomas looked

more than capable of stepping in and doing the job. Julian Love, Mike McDonald yesterday said it was, he looks like that was maybe the best game he's had as a Seahawks and that's saying something. That was Mike McDonald's quote. So now you've got those two. You've got AJ Finley who is right, I'm telling you, he's right there with Rodney Thomas. AJ Finley is a good player. And then if you get like when you get Tio Kada back and you've got Nicki Minaj back, like Nicki Minaj is part of that cornerback conversation as well. He fits in both the cornerback and the safety and the linebacker conversation. So all of a sudden the secondary, you know, you have a lot fewer question marks about the depth there. And I don't think, I don't think you're going to be like, my God, this team can't operate without Kobe Bryant, or my God, like this team can't operate without Rick Wolland. We'll see. We'll see.

There's a couple other things. What was I just going to look up? This is the downside of being an old man. I forget things right as soon as I think of them. So I'm just going to look up. It was related to, I think it was related to the defensive line. But the other thing that I will say is I didn't feel like on the downside. I didn't feel the edge rush as much as I had hoped. I thought I'd see a little bit more from Dante Fowler. Didn't get that in week one. Did not feel dare call quite as much as I would have liked. So I still think there are question marks on the edge for the Seahawks in terms of generating edge rush. I thought the defensive line did their job pretty well. One of the things that shows this is that, so the Seahawks actually blitzed a little bit more than they did in 2025. They had 25% blitz rate.

Here's the thing that really stood out to me. When the Seahawks sent a four man rush, they had a 30.8% pressure rate. 31%. When they sent a four man rush last year, they had a 31% pressure rate, both in the Super Bowl and in the season. So four man rush in the game against the Patriots this week was essentially the same effectiveness as a blitz or like, sorry, same effectiveness as last year. Let me say that again. A four man rush in week one against the Patriots this year was essentially just as effective as a four man rush was for all of last season. But when you went to a five man rush, which is when it is considered a blitz or a six man rush, it didn't perform very well. Five man rush, Seahawks had a 33% pressure rate, barely above their four man rush rate. That was down from a 50% pressure rate last season. That was down from a 67%

pressure rate in the Super Bowl last year. So that is a five man rush. When they had six plus guys rush, which they did 8% of the time, zero percent pressure rate. When they did that last year, 50% pressure rate. So the blitzes were far less effective in this game against the Patriots than they were a year ago. The four man rush just as effective. That's something to keep an eye on because I don't know how much of that has to do with Nicki Minaj worry being out and they're being being harder to disguise what kind of defense they're in and what they're going to do. What I mean by that is because Nicki Minaj even worries plays linebacker and safety and nickel corner and defensive end at times, he can be in the game and you don't know what defense the Seahawks are in. I talked this about with Mike Donald yesterday. Everyone like all the numbers say that Seahawks were

nickel like the most of any team in the NFL last year. That's because Nicki Minaj worry was on the field and they consider him a defensive back. But the reality is there's times that Nicki Minaj is playing a linebacker. So in the first game against the Patriots, they're putting in Tairi's Knight to play linebacker in a base defense. It's very obvious that they're in base defense in that situation. Then they bring in Nehemiah Pritchett and Devon Withershpoon moves to nickel and it's very obvious they're in nickel. Well, the Seahawks when Nicki Minaj worries in don't have to move anybody in or out. Nicki Minaj worry is the linebacker. He is the nickel. So it is harder for there's no way that like a statistical like tracker can decide what defense was called because the only person that knows that are the people that know the play call. And then you know, you can probably dissect it after the play in terms of if you really

know football, but even then probably not. So my point is there might be more tells. There almost certainly are more tells when Nicki Minaj worries not on the field that could affect the effectiveness of blitzes. But I have been curious if Mike McDonald's going to send Devon Withershpoon more this year. He did again in this game, but it also was something where I think they felt like the Patriots struggled with that and they certainly did in the Super Bowl. Patriots had a great plan for it. It just had no positive impact for the Seahawks. Like it was it was a nothing burger. So I am curious to see how that kind of plays out in the in the future weeks. What else? I thought AJ Barnor had an excellent game blocking. I thought tight ends in general, especially in the run game. It had some really nice blocks on the edge to seal it. I thought Jadari and Price, I think we all saw it. Looks like a guy that can be a real difference maker for this team. It has big games ahead of him. When you add Zach Sharbinay to that backfield,

it's going to get pretty interesting. Yeah, I am here for a Jadari and Price that Sharbinay backfield duo. I think that's going to look really good. I would have liked to see more of Manuel Wilson, but I understand like George Alonney is the guy that they trust and has done a lot in this offense and is capable in his own right. But I would have liked to see a little bit more of Manuel Wilson. Other takeaways. I think those are probably the primary pieces. I think we're going to see Drew Locke for at least another week, maybe another two weeks. People are going to assume it's a win against Arizona and I get it. But anytime you start your backup quarterback, it is not a guarantee what's going to happen. So I am curious to see how the team kind of performs in that situation. I'm going to look really quickly through my other metrics. The penalties. Yeah, the penalties. This was a massive issue in preseason.

Massive issue in preseason. Now those guys are not people that are on the team or getting playing time for the most part. 10 penalties for 98 yards is a big deal. And so hopefully they can get rid of some of the pre snap penalties as they get more accustomed to each other. But that was an issue. The other thing, this is not a storyline, but something I did not like. So they made the decision to pull Neumai approach it up to the 53 man roster. And in doing so, they waived Bryce Cable do. And he was claimed by Clint Cubiak and the Raiders yesterday. So that's kind of a big deal, honestly. I think that's a big deal because Bryce Cable do was under a club control for this season and the next two seasons after that. And I'm sorry, I just

double pecking something there. So now I think Bryce Cable do Mason Richmond was lost to injury. And now you've got Christian Haynes who is fine as a backup guard. And I think has played better and shown some growth. But he's on the last year of his deal. So you essentially exposed a guy that you were going to have club control over on the interior offensive line who I think was a promising prospect. Clearly Clint Cubiak does because he claimed him. For a guy that very likely will not be on your team last next year in Christian Haynes. I'm not saying I wanted to waive Christian Haynes either, but offensive linemen are super valuable in my mind. And I think that they're more valuable than safeties. So even if let's say AJ Finley was going to get claimed or signed off the practice squad to someone else's 53 man roster, personally, I would have

been more comfortable losing a safety than losing a young offensive lineman. And so I did not love that. I did not love that. There probably is a reason for it. But that like roster construction wise, that gave me some pause. So I think those are a couple of beats. I know there's some super chats. I will get to those super chats in a second. Before we do that, let's hear from a way to get some food home. I think I'm getting hungry for breakfast. We've all felt guilty after eating a meal. Factor meals is given a new reason to feel guilty. All right, so let's get to some super chats. I've got a whole got a lot of Venmo super chats. I'm going to start there.

All right, so Herbert Davidson, just for being a Hawks guy, well thank you. Appreciate you. Ben Coleman for HBTix. Thank you for that. Amit Guha. Brian so big he got posted on C.OX ship posting on Instagram. What a legend. Yeah, I guess. If you want to see more of my face, congratulations on that. Jacob Hickman says great to see Pricet's game against Arizona. Wasn't a one-off super happy for him, Go Hawks. Nick Cullen says, just curious, have you checked out Tom Große? He's a great watch because even though he's a diehard Packers fan, always has a decent fact-based opinion on the C.Hawks, even after everything we, and then it trails off. I do not watch Tom Große. Giovanni says, what's up, Brian? I love watching your YouTube channel. I appreciate you building a website for C.Hawks fan's exchange tickets to each other and keep the home field advantage you

the man go Hawks. Well, thanks man. Appreciate you. Alex Hudock said, love last night's game, but keeping in mind, the week one results for last year's C.Hawks. If the Rams looked like they did tonight through week four, I'll be overjoyed. At this point, I think the nature and fashion of the Hawks win says more about them than the Rams lost says about the Rams. I don't know about that. I think it says the exact thing that we've been saying on this show about both teams the whole time. Football's every sport, everything in life is about more than talent and gift. It is about like the makeup of the character of the people and the person involved in whatever's going on and the Rams are a team from top to bottom that are front runners. And LA as a area, look, I was born in Southern California, so I have some awareness. It is superficial. It is surface level. It is

appearance over substance like 100%. It doesn't mean that everyone's bad down there, but it's just the value system is different than mine. And I think it's different than the Northwest value system. And this team up in Seattle is substance over appearance. It is, it goes deep. It's not superficial. There's nothing superficial about this team. The connection is deep. The talent is deep. The roster is deep. The respect for each other is deep. And if you don't think that's the primary reason the Seahawks won a game where they lost their starting quarterback after the first series. Played their backup the whole game pretty much. And we're down 10 to nothing and we're losing penalty yards like crazy. I would say 75% of the reason that the Seahawks won that game is because

of who they are and how they've built that culture. And I think that at least half of the reason that the Rams lost the game the way they lost the game yesterday was because of who they are and how they're led. So I do think that those things matter and I do think that they continue to prove that year after year. Now I'm not going to like close the door on the Rams. That's ridiculous. But there's reasons to be concerned. For sure, if you are a Rams supporter. Alright, some other super chats. We've got Jay Z says when do you think Donald's back? Worst case. I mean, I don't know. I'm not going to get into worst case scenarios. I think he's not going to play against the Cardinals almost certainly and then we're going to start

monitoring for the Washington game. Either he'll play in that game or likely he'll play in the next game. That's kind of the way I'm thinking about it. We'll find out. I don't think the team knows. I don't think he knows yet. So no real point in kind of guessing. Revenger. Excited for the price versus love story next week. Yeah. That's going to be fun part of the storyline. Jeremiah love versus Gerrion price. Both those guys really respect each other and it's been kind of cool. They're like brothers and I've enjoyed watching and listening to them talk about each other. Mr. A. Pack lib says, thanks for all you do. My wife, Jackie and I are huge fans. No better way to spend her birthday today than watching HB Mornings go hot. So happy birthday, Jackie. Happy birthday and thank you guys for tuning in. Dark guitarist says watch Job Interceptions, spoon pointed in face, Tontoed Hollins in front of the ref. We did we dodge a bullet. I can't remember if that penalty applies on the next play. It would be after the play. If you taunt after an interception, you keep the football. So it does not as far as I know, I don't think

that invalidates the play. Like for example, when Rick Wolling got the taunting penalty after the third down stop in the NFC championship, that was after the play. Right. It didn't invalidate the play. It just gave them a first down after it. So possession would have changed and I think the CX just would have had worse field position. And then dark guitarist says media crowning the Rams, Garrett, it feels like Raheem Morris was the most fearsome addition in the NFC West. This off season. Eh, I don't know about that. I don't know about that. Um, dark guitarist, how do they fit in a rollo? So this is a good, good one I missed in terms of a narrative, um, to just watch. It peaked my ears when Brian Flurry asked about Elijah Royo before the first game said that he's grown a lot. And he's got a lot of growing left to do. That was a sign that like he's not quite in the good grace. He

also said we'll find ways to get him on the field. That is not what you say when a guy is first and foremost like super impressed you. You want him at the center of what you're doing. You're really excited about him. That is what you say about a guy that you think is capable of more than he's demonstrating and you're not ready to lean on him. So I think there's some work to do for Elijah Royo with Brian Flurry. That's my interpretation I could be off. But you know, it was interesting to me that Nick Calerap was on the inactive list. I think he has a lot to offer, but we'll see. We will see how that plays out over time. Last one from Dr. Carth. Do you see Dreymont Jones stupid post hurting Sam Donald? Yeah, I posted about that. Yeah, Dreymont Jones has some some hard feelings about the sea ox for some reason. Not sure why. Okay, that will do it folks.

I will tell you, um, head over to let's see if this is actually up and working yet. I'm probably not even supposed to send you guys here. Um, but it's, is it Pemko? Hold on. Let me pull it up because it's, I want to celebrate what's going on with Pemko. It's very cool. Um, I'm actually going to be going and checking out the repairs from our flood soon. Um, and Pemko's been amazing in all of that. Um, okay, where did it go? Here it is. Uh, go. Pemko.com slash Hawk blogger. Let's, uh, let's check it out together real quick. Is this up? Is it working? I think so. Go. Pemko.com slash Hawk blogger. Yeah, it looks like it's working. Um, so check this out. Uh, I'm going to stop screen share share this stuff.

Um, you know, it's, it's, it's interesting working with Pemko because there are some like rules about what insurance companies can do in terms of promotion. Um, but the thing that I really want to just call out is I've been a customer, we've been a customer for many years. We've had trees fall in our house. We've had floods. We've had some pretty disastrous things. And the coverage has always been great. They've taken care of my family really well. They've been really kind. That's a northwest company. They serve Washington, Oregon. Um, so go to go go go dot Pemko.com slash Hawk blogger. They've got some information up there. You can start a quote if you want to start, you know, looking at whether they can help you out and cover you. Um, and this is like, this is a northwest company. Uh, and I really try to my best to work with Northwest companies whenever I can. So check them out. Um, huge fans and appreciate their support for the show. All right, everybody.

I'll be back with you tomorrow for C.O.X Saturday. Until then, thank you.
