This podcast is proud to be part of the Talksport fan network Talksport powered by fans. This is Saturday's United Daily Podcast. I'm Wayne Barton with today's news and rumours. A little plug before I begin anything. The launch of my, well not my new website, the new news outlet that I've joined as Chief Manchester United Correspondent. Launched yesterday is the 1878. You can find it at the 1878.News. So the the numbers 1878.1878.News. All of my writing will be there from now on. Features, news, long form analysis, all the stuff that if you've enjoyed my writing in the past, all of those features and more will
be available on the 1878 from now on. I'm really excited about it. There's a lot of good things planned. I've got features that are effectively books that I'll be giving we'll be posting on that. So yeah, there's a lot of stuff on there already. I've talked to Alex Stepney about Senna Lommons' long form reads on United's ticket infiasco and a preview for the game against Manchester City tomorrow, which I'll be getting through now. Not my writing obviously. You can find that on the website, but here is the preview Michael Kerrick's pre-match press conference, which was to live it after the game on Thursday night, I think. So yeah, so first of all, you know, I had a bit of transfer speculation. There'd been links with Bournemouth's Adrian Truffaut, the 24-year-old French left back. Bournemouth will want about 60 million for him. It's incredible work. Money balls,
any down there. How they replaced Kirk as with a player of replacing him seamlessly with another player of that value. United should be all over the conveyor belt into Bournemouth and Brighton, but that's the point isn't it? These clubs can take chances on that like the young lad who plays up front for them. His name I was probably going to go to Arsenal in the summer. Yeah, so United I've been with him this morning as they look for alternatives to Lewis Hall. Newcastle still briefing that he is on the market I guess, but they also announced they sound a long term contract yesterday, so I can't see that one happening next summer. So Michael Kerrick was asked about Mattias and Ben playing in a benign role. Mattias Cuniu and Ben Jimi and Cesco, of course, he was asked about them as different players. He said they definitely do play different
roles. It's obviously a different strengths. I think there are principles of what we're trying to achieve as a team and what the way we're trying to play. Hopefully it doesn't change too much with personnel, but it definitely gives us different options if that makes sense. We still want to try we still want to play a certain way and try certain things, but there's a different threat. Ben, Mattias, Brian and Ben were Marcus Rashford or whoever is up there. It depends a little bit on the opposition a little bit on the balance of our team and certain things we want to attack, certain spaces or whatever that may be. Sometimes it's in possession, sometimes it's without the ball and certain things we've got to defend in certain areas, so there's quite a bit that goes into it. Yeah, it's going to be an interesting selection tomorrow. Cesco is more than earned his place in the starting lineup. Marcus Rashford has started every league game or it's starting every league game. He started the last two. I don't know. It's a really tough one. The political situation that you know, they've got themselves into by keeping Rashford on the books or not being able to move him.
He was asked Michael about Marcus. He said I don't know. He didn't play tonight, Thursday night, obviously, but the fans were singing his name and it feels like he's in a good place. Michael said, I have to say, referring to them all by the first name, Michael Carrick said, really pleased with Marcus. Pleased with him in so many ways. I think it's pretty obvious with his performances. He was a real threat again on Sunday, although he didn't get a little bit more success, unfortunately. He was a real threat. I'm not really sure what else to say. We just really pleased to have him. He's doing a lot of things really well and he settled back in really quickly. He had a knock on Sunday, so Michael will say, you know, Michael Carrick was saying a little bit of that. That's why he was out of Thursday's game. He's also trying to share the load a little bit. We've got good options. We're trying to keep everyone fresh and give sesco good minutes. Game up to speed. There's always a bit of a challenge in getting that right. It was nice to keep
Marcus fresh and ready for the weekend. He was just about the rotation in the second half, but why? He didn't say Boone off and Andes off. He said, well, we only had five sub-so we have to make certain decisions on what that looked like. Of course, he's like anybody else. He has played an awful lot, but I think we're developing the group in the squad to be able to accommodate that in different ways. Tonight was just one of those things. There were decisions to be made and he ended up staying up. He was asked about Luke Shaw. He said, we'll have to see. We looked after him a little bit going into tonight. It wasn't quite ready for it. He wasn't 100% so we didn't risk it. We'll see how he is over the next couple of days. Karik was asked about the start of his reign being against Sitter and most people didn't expect United to do well, but they've got higher expectations now. And he said, well, it'll definitely be different because two no two games are ever the same. There's no way we're assuming that we won last year so we can do the same things and everything will be the same. I understand the expectation. Everything was quite fresh and we didn't really know where it was going to go.
The players, myself, the coaches, you guys, we were all waiting to see how it would go and it was a quick turn around. I think the confidence we've built over a period of time and the feeling that we're all getting better all the time, that helps us. We know it's a big game. We know it's an important game. There's a lot riding on it. That's pretty obvious to say. We're looking forward to it. We've got a short space of time to recover and prepare. We'll make the most of it. We've asked about the challenges that an Enzo meresco side poses. Is there any difference with the Goliola? He said, well, they're a very good team. They've had some really good results. I thought they were really professional the way they play against Poto. They're efficient in what they needed to do. They have place to choose from and rotate and that's the position they're in. So they're a good team. They're a little tweak team and they're that I don't need to talk about here but we try to take from the game. We know we have to put in a really good performance and do a lot of good things together as all we want. We've asked about the comments that Elliott Anderson made saying, city with kings of Manchester.
Carrie said, I'm definitely not using that phrase at all. No, I understand it. Going to Champions League games and I'm talking about the expectation is a really good thing that the expectation has shifted. All of the sudden different things have been asked of us compared with a few months ago. We're in the Champions League which itself shows the steps we've made and we need to be in the latest stages of that. We know the expectations around that were humble and realistic enough to know where we've come from in recent history. We need and want to be better and need to be challenging more. That's where we're at. It doesn't mean that we can't and won. We still hope we believe and expect that we can and should be, but I understand the bigger picture. He was asked about Euritileman's. Tealamans had a really good game against FK Sabah. It was his best game before the club. Obviously, generous opposition to be able to play that kind of way. You can read more in my piece on the 1870s about what midfield I would play on Sunday's game. But yeah, Carrie said about
the game. Basically, the question was, is it the type of midfield technician that you'd not be missing since Carrie left? He said, I don't want to talk about me as I said before about the former fielders who played tonight. I think they're all technical. They're all able to take the ball and play forward, whether that's to a pass or a run or a dribble and they connect begin forward. It's nice to be able to draw upon that and have it in the team. Euritileman is settled in fantastically and resettled in great. Raskin Mason to do slightly different things from what he may have done in the past. But you saw tonight in the preseason how natural it is for him to do that. Going back to Eurit, I think every game is getting better. You can see the connections and understanding between each other is growing all the time. He was asked again about the City game, the first game being a whirlwind. Did he think that he'd get the jubble time and be here? But on a permanent basis, he said, yeah, I think I said it pretty early on. Although the decisions
we were making were as if we were going to be here for a period of time. I never knew how long that was going to be. I still don't. But you're always planning for what we want the future to look like in the direction we want to go in. That was from day one. It was quick. There was a turnaround. As I've just said about that game, there was a bit of an unknown performance. The last game was incredible with all of that. But there definitely was. Always has been and will always will be from the start. Plenty to get to this club where we want to get it in the long term. Yeah, positive pieces there. So we'll see. I expect Luke Schulte to be fit. I think it was a precaution. I expect Marcus Rashford will probably play. Might not be my choice. But yeah, more about that. I keep plugging it. My piece on the 1878. The club have run a little bit of a sort of good news story on Manuel Agarte back in the gym at Carrington as he continues his recovery from ligament damage. So news for the women's team. United women's player Fridaleen El Rolfo
announced she is pregnant. The club have done a nice feature on that on the website this week. Swedish International two times. Champions League without did a sort of group announcement in front of the squad. Eva Oled has confirmed that Jade Riviera and Emma Watson will miss the first home game against Chelsea. That's on Sunday. She had a press conference on Friday afternoon as well. She said Riviera will be missing with a calf problem. Yeah, a few on this day to bring you a very brief let. Happy birthday to Scott Wooten, former Manchester United defender. Friend of the podcast, of course. We had a good room. We got back in the day, featured on our podcast for quite a few episodes. Probably most of a year, one time, including when he moved down to Australia and New Zealand. He had a good spell in Wellington and he moved to Perth, glory. They really were light in the Australian game. Anyway, Scott retired this past week,
actually, retired from playing. He's been given a position as the technical director of Academy at Perth, glory. So happy birthday, Scott. Congratulations on a fine career and a new position. I've already told him directly. Reach out to him to tell him congratulations, but that's for everyone else who didn't know. On this day in 1959, 67 years ago, Johnny Giles made his debut for the club against Spurs on this day 11 years ago. Marcel made his debut against Liverpool and scored, didn't he? On this day 90 years ago, Manchester United were two and a look in the Manchester Dolby Altrafford. He came back to Tutu, William Bryan and named you've almost certainly never heard of, scored late on to Winnie Fyneighted. We could do with that excitement tomorrow, but straightforward, Winnie would also be nice, wouldn't it? On this day in 1995, Manchester United drew a little note at Rotovolgo Grant on this day in 1987, United drew Tutu at Newcastle,
Mirandina. Can you remember him? The Brazilian scored twice for Newcastle. On this day in 1956, 70 years ago, today Manchester United played their first ever game in European competition. It was in the European Cup, it was at Underlight. Dennis Vylers scored Manchester United's first ever goal in Europe. Tommy Taylor scored the second United one, too, Neil. And that's about it for today, guys. Thanks for listening to this episode of United Daily. If you enjoyed the, if you enjoyed the Daily Podcast, if you could give me a rating on Apple Podcasts, I would really appreciate it. Or Spotify, if you listen on that, if you can leave a review as well, a positive review, I would really, really appreciate it. And if you have made it this far, if you checked my socials this past 24 hours or so, you might have seen some news that I shared that last weekend. Obviously, there was Sunday's episode that I didn't post, because unfortunately,
I wasn't in the best space. I was, I had a really bad anxiety attack and I went, I was in hospital with it actually, and it was really, really difficult time actually. But I'm all right. I've had a good week and I shared about that yesterday because I felt a little bit anxious and cautious about sharing all the stuff that I am at the moment because it was an episode of United Unheard. There's a new website, loan chain, the new news website and obviously I'm still promoting the forthcoming book, Fergie the Lost tapes. And I wanted, you know, obviously that was way on my mind a little bit. And I don't know if it was related to increased things either. I don't know if you know that. There's a few other things going on in my life as well. But I post about that yesterday and really, really appreciative of the support. I mean, if you
can follow the 1878 on socials as well, the initial feedback for that has been amazing. I'm so grateful and so thankful for a few guys. It's the 1878 news on socials. Anyway, I feel like it's appropriate to leave on a plug there. I just want to thank everyone who showed support in that time. And it continues to show support. I really do appreciate messages. I try and be as open as I can about it. People say that it's helpful that I'm doing that. I don't know how really, but, you know, I try and be as open as I possibly can with it. It's definitely not an easy progress. It's linear progress. It's something I've dealt with for years. Continue to deal with. I will continue to deal with just at a bump last week and mental health is generally all right. If you're wondering, it's just sometimes you don't know when these things are going to strike. Do you? That's the nature
of the beast. Hopefully the nature of the beast for you like it is that they win another derby against Manchester City. I'll be going to SoulShare for a little period of time at the Indian sign. Obviously, didn't they? Let's hope that Karik has got the same kind of power. That's it. I'll be back tomorrow with the news in gossip. Have a great day.
