North Carolina took care of business this week, beating Louisville and VT at home, improving their record to 4-1 without superstar freshman Caleb Wilson. The trio digs deeper into North Carolina's unexpected success without Wilson, highlighting Seth Trimble's 30-point game against Louisville and Henry Veesaar's 26 points Saturday. While the scoring outputs are key, the improved defensive discipline and offensive consistency were noteworthy as those two issues have given the Heels problems on and off this year.
The discussion also covered the importance of role players like Jonathan Powell and Zayden High, and the potential impact of Caleb Wilson's return. UNC now looks to the last two regular season games with many of their goals still within reach and with games against Clemson and Duke on tap, the focus on maintaining composure and leveraging recent improvements will determine just how high up the seed lines this group can get in the conference and NCAA tournaments.
Sherrell McMillan and Sean Moran join Joey Powell to put meaning to the week and concluded with a mention of Malloy Smith's official visit to North Carolina.
The Coast to Coast is delivered by Salvio's Pizzeria.
The Caleb Wilson is brought to you by Alex Swire-Clark.

What's up, everybody? If I'd have told you, and all the other Carolina fans a month ago, that the Tar Heels would be 4-in-1 without Caleb Wilson, you would have thought I'd been on the pipe. Instead, Carolina beats Louisville at home as an underdog, then they come back Saturday night and have a Virginia Tech in the Smith Center. Seth Trimble drops 30 against a ranked team and Revesar goes for 26 and owns the paint. The bench contributes real minutes, not just survival minutes. This team hasn't just survived Caleb Wilson's absence. It's developed a little bit of an edge. Tonight, we're going to break down what's real in this stretch to use the Hubert Davis phrase. What the staff is doing in-game to adjust and how Carolina can maximize each role player moving forward. I'm Joey Powell. This is the Coast of Coast from Inside Carolina. Let's get it.

at Salvia's Pizza. Sherelle McMillan, Sean Moran, are here. We're grateful for them for making time this evening. Guys, I'll be honest, we said last week when we were getting out of here that we expected one in one, but instead, North Carolina has won two games that were absolutely just unthought of a couple of weeks ago when it was announced that Caleb Wilson was hurt. This stretch isn't accidental to me. You've got two anchor wins, one of which, when Seth Trimble continued his torrent affair after the second half at Syracuse, and then Virginia Tech was just all Henry Vesar all the time, really taking over, really setting himself. I feel like this team knows exactly how it needs to win right now. So I'm going to ask both of you guys from the past week, looking forward, what's been the most repeatable element of these wins? Sean, I'm coming to you first. Good question right off the bat. I mean, most repeatable in terms of going forward, I don't know how repeatable it is,
but in terms of how they've started the second half, that has been the thing that really drove them to the 2 and 0, or I think, yeah, last week, had some fear of Louisville shooting the 3. I thought probably would get the win against Virginia Tech, but that one proved a little bit tougher. But I think you are hopefully repeatable in terms of Seth Trimble becoming a reliable double digit score. I think Henry has been that all season. Right now they've been subbing for Caleb, but I think hopefully repeatable is probably not 50 points over two games, but if you can be in that 15 to 18 point range, that raises the team's ceiling if he is that second or third leading score. And then so far, they've been able to find whether it's in double digits or just below double digits, they've been able to find that third and fourth guy, even though it's changed in those games, but really, to me, hopefully, Seth Trimble and his offensive play and his aggressiveness getting to the basket is something that can be repeatable over the next few
weeks. Yeah, playing downhill has been the key to unlocking his offense. Shrel, same question. What's repeatable? Yeah, I was going to say Seth getting downhill, but in the interest of being different, I'll say kind of Evans being steady. It's not just a one game trend. It's more like a, I guess, three, four, five game trend, really, really the last six games outside of NC State. He's come in, he's played decent minutes, you know, 10 to 12. He's hit a three, he's had a couple of sys, usually has a turnover that you're kind of scratching your head at, but in general, he's been steady. And I think with the point guard situation, neither player is like at that next level, the Carolina needs to be, you know, one of the country's true elite teams, but between the two of them, as long as one of them has it going, then I think they can still be, or they have shown that they can be a really good team. You know, I think that's the value is that the team, the way it's built, I think we talked
about it a lot in the last season was that there's a lot of versatility. And it was just going to be, you pretty much know what you're going to get from Trimble. You pretty much know what you're going to get from Wilson and Vessar, you know, from there now, I was just going to be who are the other two or the guys who make an impact that night? And can he read Davis identify him quick enough and keep him in the lineup long enough for them to make a difference? And I think that's what you're seeing. So I think that is repeatable and has been repeatable the whole season. Yeah, it's crazy. I think I probably noticed about the same time that you did, but in the first half against Virginia Tech, Cyan Evans was just, he wasn't scoring. I mean, he hit one three, but he wasn't doing anything flashy. He had one really head scratching turn ever like you alluded to, Cheryl, but he really was kind of keeping the pace. He was looking to push. He was very under control and I agree with everything you just said. If North Carolina can get that out of one of the point guards, man, it changes trajectory. And they've done a good job of actually taking care of the ball down the stretch.
They've done, they haven't had a ton of turnovers recently. They've had fits and starts of them. But it's for the most part, it's been very, very, very tolerable. And they've been careful with it. One thing that Joy, I need to, I should have done the research and looked at the numbers, but we were talking offline, some folks like, it seems to be a trend always back to Kansas that the first half, a lot of times, they come out, they're a little sloppy, six, seven, eight, you know, maybe 10 turnovers in the first half. And then in the second half, you look down with three minutes left and there's been one turnover and was often to foul or there's been two turnovers and one was like, somebody trying to save it, you know, under their own goal or something like that. So it has been a trend. I don't know why that is, but they do come out in the second half and protect the ball. It seems like just anecdotally a lot better. Yeah, we're going to get in a little bit more to the coaching staffs in game adjustments, because I think it's important, especially considering the, the microscope and the criticism that the staff has, has rightfully taken it times this year, looking at the Louisville
game. We talked about Seth Trimble getting downhill, but it was absolutely just a mindset from him that I think a lot of folks have been wanting to see. Shrelie, you always talk about the finality of the end of the season. Well, look here in a February, Seth seems to find his offense and he's got just as unblockable I think of a layup when he decides he wants to go to the rack. It's almost impossible for defenses to adjust to it, but it gets Louisville, North Carolina, built the lead with defensive discipline after giving up some rough three pointers early. The staff adjusted when Louisville started switching a little more aggressively. Sean, what do you feel like you were Davis and the staff allowed early on that allowed you and see to create clean looks? And then I want you to also talk how they countered Louisville's pressure late game, because I think that's something that that might go unnoticed. And you know, even even some of the post game columns, I think it's, it's worth looking at because I think it matters as we get into post season play.
So create clean looks for the offense and then also how they were countering the pressure that they were getting from Louisville late. Well, I think Sean talked about the stat last week in terms of how Louisville's defense of what they ranked on on each quad. And I think, you know, for Seth, when the game is a little more open, a little more space and you have those downhill, downhill lanes, Louisville wasn't offering much rim protection. They're aggressive, they're aggressive on the ball, but it reminded me of, you know, the Duke teams from five plus years ago where they'd be aggressive on the ball above the three-point line. But if you could get by them, then it was, it was pretty easy to get to the basket or find open man. But I think UNC's, you know, getting down, getting down big early, they could have folded to me, it almost reminded me a little bit of the Alabama game from last year where they just two teams were operating at a, at a different speed. But UNC quickly turned that around, pressured, you know, pressured Louisville.
But offensively, I think they've been able, you know, hebards to his credit, sometimes I think maybe over managing the plays and the sets that they're doing. But you look at it from a turnover perspective and you see, I think this is the second best team UNC's had from a turnover perspective as well. So, you know, I think he's been pretty good with what's been how the speed of the game is going. Well, again, from even when Trimble getting downhill, when you have Vace R in the game, that reliable post presence, it does allow you to do many things. Right now they're missing, you know, that strong double team that Kayla would get. But people are still, he's still number one on the scout and you can hit you with the right hand hook, left hand hook, three-point shot. So having that five-man, such a skilled offensive score, allows other players to get open. And there is, for the most part, a lot of ball movement, off-ball movement happening, which I know we always talked about last year and sometimes when they are struggling.
So I think, really, Vace R being that key cog and then a lot of the off-ball movement, as Ro mentioned, the versatility. So players can, they can drive, they can't shoot, they have different skill sets where it's not just a one-trick pony or people that can't shoot and it's being played off of. So I just saw that a little more come up in Louisville as they were struggling to kind of stop after that first pass or first drive. And then defensively, I thought, as I said, Louisville was operating at a different speed just in terms of how they were getting open, the three-point shooting, the off-ball picks, utilizing the big and then really it was Vace R playing so far off, almost five on four in that game to kind of provide a little bit of a helping hand on the drives. And you and C, I thought, did a great job from a defensive standpoint of even though it was very hard to get around those screens and to navigate the numerous screens, they were able to provide a lot of ball pressure and a lot of pressure on those shots.
And I think it was said in some of the interviews, but it did seem like Louisville did get tired as that game progressed with heavier legs from the three-point shooting. And then it did get tight, but you and C was able to make big shots and get good shots when they needed in that final, final stanza as well. Shrill, I saw a team against Louisville instead of just immediately putting on the brakes when they had a lead down the stretch. North Carolina started taking a little bit more of the shot clock gradually. That to me looks like a team that's adjusting and learning not to flinch. What did you see from them from an emotional standpoint when Louisville made their run towards the end? Because I didn't see a group that looked rattled, but I'd be curious to see how you felt about it. I think there's a little bit of rattling, like I know, Dixon had to turn over and then made the really tough play of fouling the layup on the end one. I think that it could have to six at one point.
So there were a couple of those plays and there were a couple of misfree throws, but in general, I think they, Sean always talks about this of like getting to a point where you take that eight point lead to 16 so that when the run comes and they go into nothing, run to six instead of your down two. And this is like the perfect example. They were able during that stretch when they were on fire early in the second half to stretch it out to 16. And to me, that's the reason they won because they gave themselves enough room for when Louisville inevitably started making more shots. They had enough cushion to sustain it and then they made just enough free throw. So, excuse me, I think there, there was some growth, but it's still an area of improvement for UNC moving forward, especially at the free throw line. They were much better on Saturday closing it out. And I know we'll talk about that then Monday, but you know, it, it's improved. It, it, it wasn't 32 to 10 or, you know, whatever the Syracuse game was. So it's better.
And I think Seth was just so hot on Monday that there was no way that, you know, they were going to lose that game because of the way he was getting to the basket. So let's go ahead and talk about Virginia Tech. Because again, I, it's not as much as I want to rehash the whole game. That's what Tommy does a great job in the post game for, but I think it's important for us to look at kind of larger picture stuff so folks can help project forward as to how, you know, what the major takeaways are after you've had a chance to let it digest a little bit. Thinking about Virginia Tech, you started to see a little more identity from the interior. You started to see some edge from the bench, which maybe that started as Syracuse, who knows, but 89 points, 55% shooting, plus 12 in the rebound column again. They saw her had 26. Seth triple contributed 20, Powell and high. Once again, very impactful in their bench minutes. Sean, what did you feel like changed after half time structurally? Because I felt like once again in the first half, North Carolina was just either they
weren't communicating or they weren't properly seeing Virginia Tech's action before it started. I feel like they were, they were reacting a little late in a lot of things and then not communicating on top of it. But I would be curious to hear from you. What do you feel like changed after half time? Was defensive positioning? Was it screening angles? Was it tweaks and matchups? What did you see? Well, I think first off, Virginia Tech is a sneaky good team, obviously, they're robot got him. Cheryl, do you have anything? I'm going to, I'm going to, I'm going to mute Sean for a second, but I'm hoping you can get back. Sean's Sean went digitized. Oh, I think, I think he's back. Oh, he's back. All right, go ahead, Sean. I didn't know I left. Can you hear me? You did. You went, I heard nothing. You said Virginia Tech's a good team and then went full robot on us. All right, I apologize. I thought you were laughing at my Mike Young comment where I did say I thought he was a
pretty good, pretty good in game, in game coach and, and playing against Virginia Tech is never, never easy, but I did think in the first, first half, we've talked so much about you and see in terms of the, the, the preparation that now coming out of the Cal, Cal weekend or Cal week, they feel that I feel they've been really prepped for the game, both from a coaching perspective, as well as understanding the inbound plays, out of bound plays, the sets that all the teams are running and their communication, their communication was still there. I just felt to your point, Joey, there were a step, step too slow or Virginia Tech was just a step ahead of them in terms of what they wanted to dictate. And Virginia Tech was getting shots and they're hitting, hitting shots, which you have to give them, give them credit for and they have some talented players with size. So to me, it was really the offensive consistency in the second half, especially the start of the second half going on a 6-0 run right off the bat. So now you're, you're putting the pressure on them. Virginia Tech comes back, you're able to make another, another run.
So it was really just the offensive consistency with VASAR, but also having some of the other guys come in and then you add in one or two of those steals, which we know UNC is not great at forcing turnovers, but now all of a sudden you have the open donger, the easy and easier basket, and it just makes life a lot, a lot easier to, so to me, it was the offensive consistency, but also throughout the game, Jonathan Powell, who had a goose egg against Louisville, and we've talked about him a lot just get hit, you know, last week get him more open looks, especially from the corner this time he was hitting, you know, from, from the wings and deep, but I think, you know, as much as you can do to get him going, get him involved in the game, but offensively and defensively, that just provides the power of the three, and if you can get to the eight plus as we always did, which they did both games at a good percentage, that makes it easier, but to me, it was just the offensive consistency and putting the pressure on Virginia Tech to always have to answer what, what happened. Mmm, one ice coffee, 99 cents please, for real, no way, mmm, one ice coffee, 99 cents
please, for real, no way, mmm, what a deal, your new morning groove, ice coffee from McDonald's any size for just 99 cents to 11 a.m., price and participation may vary, cannot be combined with any other offer, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, Hey, Sal, Hank, what's going on? We haven't worked a case in years. I just bought my car at Carvana and it was so easy, too easy. Think something's up? Shoot, tell me, they got thousands of options, found a great car, a great price, and it got delivered the next day. It sounds like Carvana just makes it easy to buy your car, Hank. Yeah, you're right, case closed. Buy your car today on Carvana. Delivery fees may apply. It's crazy how efficient this offense can be even without Caleb Wilson right now, and again, you got to give flowers to the coaching staff and to the players for being able to execute. I think in the last couple of years, one of the things that really drove fans mad was,
you know, the dribbling the ball into the ground and going yellow at the end of a shot clock, and now it really seems, and it, part of its roster makeup, but also I think it's, it's this team, I think, understands as the years gone on, what they're supposed to do, and understands their roles. Cheryl, when you think about roles, you've got to look at how much, I guess, the other guys are giving to this roster right now. You could talk about Zaden Hayes' physicality. He's never going to be in above the rim player, but you know he's going to go in there and he's going to give you energy. The confidence that Jonathan Powell hasn't is shot. You saw he or Davis draw up a look for him off of a time out yesterday. Trimble's body language is so different right now. I'm not a huge body language guy, but I think it matters, and I think the team takes cues from him. Defensive talking and kind of getting chest up when somebody gets in their face. Caroline has been soft in the past. Any of those things I feel like have really kind of shown up really in the last month, especially since Caleb Wilson has been out. I want to ask you,
Cheryl, what do you feel like the biggest positive from these guys showing up is, is it a collective gain for the team? Or is it one specific guy that you feel like should be kind of put above everybody else on pedestal? You know, the natural inclination is to say Zaden, but I do think is the collective. And I think honestly, it's as much about he or Davis learning as everybody else because his first three seasons, I mean, on this podcast every week, it was like, they're going to place his guys maybe five and a half guys. Puff Johnson may get three minutes in the second half and it's going to be the other guys. Same thing, really until last year was the first time that he had to go into the bench a little bit. And that's just because the roster, the way it was built, was a little wonky. I think Trimble, I think was two years ago, he played, or yeah, last year, last year, Trimble played 40% of the minutes. And despite missing those couple of games, and he was the first reserve like under he or Davis to play that much. So we're seeing Hubert, I think,
grow in real time. We again, everybody talked about with this roster was like, they've got two good big guys. The initiation is questionable, but there's a lot of different pieces that can, you know, mix and match, depending on what you need. And he's done a really good job, I think, of that over the couple of weeks that Caleb Wilson has been out. Because again, nobody was talking about Jonathan Powell Monday. It was like, man, Seth Trimble was really good. Luca Bogavats was that his best game at Carolina the way he fought through some screens. He hit a couple shots. He was kind of the initiator. And then Saturday, Monday too, right, right. He defended better than we've seen from him. Right, right. And then Saturday was not his game, but then you have Jonathan Powell, basically, basically giving you exactly what he would have given you. So like, the team has found the way, even, you know, when Trimble was out, just going back, looking at it from the whole season, when Trimble was out or when Wilson was out, or even the game that they saw him as like, it didn't go well, but they've been high still was able to replicate. Like, they've been able to replicate what
they were, they're missing most of the time this season. Like on Saturday, basically, Vesar gave you what you would expect from Wilson. And then Trimble gave what you gave you what you would expect from Vesar. And then Jonathan Powell gave you what you would expect from Trimble. So like, everybody stepping up and the fact that they're getting the minutes and that he were Davis is writing the hot hands, I think it's good for the collective. That's really what has impressed me is that they're not like, all right, Luca, it's you because you're next up. It's like whoever's got it at night outside of the usuals, you're going to go with them. Well, and look at Evans's minutes against Virginia Tech, I think it's another example of that. And kind of where you were going, Shrel, I agree with, in a sense that you were Davis hasn't had this sort of roster, I think that he had this much faith in that had enough depth that he could actually play the hot hand as you're saying to use your to use your turn there. They earned his trust. Like, yeah, I mean, we can say we won about last year's team and who played and who didn't.
Certain guys, even if they were talented, didn't ever fully earn his trust. And I think now you're seeing Jonathan Powell on Monday had a couple of sequences. You can look it up. There's a popular Instagram account that breaks down plays. A couple of boxed out situations that were not good, it looked really poor. And you saw him learn for that. He has six rebounds on Saturday. That's what earns you trust from your coaches. And that's what gets you playing time. And so I think it's a big deal because I don't think he would have his trust lightly if you look at his career as a head coach. So the fact that Zayn and I has his trust and Jonathan Powell has his trust and now kind of ends is earning it. That's that's really big for him. It really is. And I think it's it's one of the things that has made this last little stretch, maybe since the Duke game. And we talked about it last week is how do you get, you know, Jonathan Powell more playing time? I don't think that's the coaching staff hearing us. I think it's the coaching staff learning as they go and recognizing, hey, let's let's do something to make sure the guys that are helping us the most are on the are on the court.
So let's talk a little bit about this stretch and why I don't think it's accidental. We've seen from this team cleaner rotations. We've seen some improved defensive matchup discipline. They still have their lapses. And I think that is is concerning, but you have to acknowledge the improvement. They've been much more intentional using Henry Vesar in space. I don't know how to how to best explain that other than the fact that, you know, dudes, you're still leaving him open for three pointers. And he's willing to take them and willing to hit them, but he'll also murder you with either, you know, that little jump hook over the left or the right shoulder. They've been better in the late clock than they have been. And they've also improved a lot of their SLOB execution, which I think is is massive for this team. Cheryl, let's go back to the trust point. Do you feel like this team, not just Hubert Davis trusting his guys, but I feel like that the team might be trusting Hubert Davis. What do you see there? Yeah, I don't really everything that wasn't out. I know there was some rough times there in January. I know there's been some
rough times over his tenure, but I never got the impression that the team had quit on him. I got the impression that what he was trying to convey to them, they weren't fully understanding or grasping. Maybe it wasn't being taught well, but evidently, I don't know if it's being top better, Sean, you can you can jump in on that. I don't know if it's being top better or if they're listening better or if the two have mesh and they they kind of found themselves in the middle, but it's it's it's gotten better. Now, if you can take still scored a lot of points, let's let's I want to make sure we're being completely fair. They are a good offensive team. They do have a lot of talent, but in the first half, it looked like that Kentucky first half again where it was just dunk after layup after dunk after floater, which I think is part of the game plan to force them into twos, but there was not a lot of resistance and a part of that is Caleb Wilson being out, obviously. But then it got better in the second half and I don't think there was like a huge structural change in what they were trying to do. And defensively, they just played
better. So yeah, I think it's a little bit of all that. I think that they've met in the middle between the the coaching staff, trusting the players to do more, the players receiving the message and then the coaching staff making sure that the message is completely in 100% clear. Yeah, regardless of how you shake it that second half, the adjustments they did make against Virginia Tech, similar to Louisville that when Virginia Tech started missing, Claire Carolina was cleaning glass and limiting them to one shot. I think it was really important. Sean is we're talking about the coaching staff adapting and making tweaks over the course of games. What are you seeing that the coaching staff is doing this part of the season that maybe they weren't doing in January? Like I know the obvious, you know, Albatross is the West Coast swing. But more importantly, I want to ask you, you know, schematically, what are you seeing them do right now that either they weren't trying earlier in the season or they were trying it just looked terrible and wasn't sticking?
Well, I'll talk about switching just because that that's been a main topic and defensive philosophy and principle. And I think, yeah, going going, what did it, I mean, it's really started with ACC play, the Florida State game. We've talked about that where Florida State had the wide open shots. They just weren't, weren't hitting them. And Sean mentioned in conference three point shooting was around 45% from the opponent. So I do think it more goes to whether it's buy-in or an understanding. I think we've talked about the better communication across the board. So I think that, you know, it's probably been a main point in practice of that communication of who's switching when you're switching, making sure the big, you know, Henry is not getting too involved in terms of being able to be isolated or he's playing against Louisville, just almost as a free safety of sort. So I think it's more of just the team has been able to gel together. And I don't know if this is the case, but once again, when Seth Trimble's the only guy
that returned from playing with the team. And I think we expect instant results. I don't think we expected it to look as bad as it did in early ACC play, especially for a team that was supposed to be higher IQ than maybe the one in the past. But to me, it has been just that more the buy-in from both the players and the coaches. You know, not at that level, but when you even see made their run in the tournament, you felt like everything was just working in terms of the coaching staff, calling the right plays, the players understanding what was to run. There have been some instances, I think it was a Pittsburgh game where offensively, Kieber Davis was trying to, you know, call certain set plays and that I felt the team was operating in a step too slow, but when you don't have your best two players, you probably need to run run those plays. So to me, it's just more everybody coming together, they've had several months, they went to the rock bottom of California, and then they've been able to work themselves up, even NC State probably refocused them as well. So to me, it's just switching and understanding
the principles that they're trying to deliver on each possession that that's been going on. And then, you know, I'll go full Roy Williams. Everything looks better with the ballers in the basket, but everything you said, Sean, I think is dead on. Hey, I got to give a shout out here to Ken Spencer, 2430 in the chat. Man, it's listening from a lone Ecuador. I don't know if you were alone, sir, but I hope that you feel like you're with us as you're joining us here in the chat with almost 350 of you on a Sunday night. I think that it's really, it's important that we acknowledge, again, coaching has been bad at times this season, but I think that they're winning right now because the staff is coaching aggressively in real time. So big thing, you and see, four and one without Caleb Wilson. I have no idea which of us thought this was going to be a thing. I did not, none of my two counterparts on this show thought that UNC was going to be at any point, four and one without
Caleb Wilson. But here we sit on March 1st. And let's go ahead and get into the Caleb Wilson segment presented by our guy, Alex Swire Clark. That's Alex Swire-Clark.com. Y'all know, Alex, you've heard him. He sponsors this segment. I mean, it should tell you what sort of forward thinking person he is that he's sponsoring a segment behind the most, I guess most talented and amazing player that North Carolina's had in quite some time. And Alex thinks that way and he wants your team to think that way. He wants you to be a forward thinking team leader. He wants your organization to communicate well. He wants your organization to be as efficient and as successful as they can be. Bring him in to talk to your team. Bring him in to explain to you guys how you could be a better organization. How you can how you can meld your top talent together. How you can collaborate. I think the most important thing that that leaders often miss is when teams
are breaking down as a result of poor communication. We've seen it with North Carolina on the basketball floor this year that when they don't communicate well, things go sideways. Alex can fix that for you in your organization. I want you to reach out to him. He's a Carolina grad. He's a multi-word winning speaker who brings energy, enthusiasm, and really, really powerful tools that your attendees will be able to use immediately, professionally and personally. Alex swire-clark.com. Alex swire-clark. He's a tar hero. Give him a call. Book him to come speak to your group and watch how things take off. Caleb Wilson's segment is brought to you by Alex. So again, Caleb Wilson is out with the fracture left hand. You did see thanks to Jim Hawkins and some other folks that he is wearing a different cast. So obviously his rehab is progressing a little bit. The team has far surpassed expectations as of today. There are still two regular season games left in the regular season. We'll wait and see. But I think what you're seeing is not a team waiting on Caleb Wilson,
but a team sharpening itself for when he comes back. Cheryl, how does this stretch benefit Caleb Wilson for when he returns to have all these other guys stepping up in his absence? I feel like we're in counseling because I'm going to say trust. Every great relationship is built on trust. But I mean, it really is what it is because we talked about it on here. He said it himself. There are times where he says, you know what? Give me the ball. Get out of the way. I have to take over. And that still might be the case when it comes back. There might be a situation where he has to do that. But I think the the leash is longer. So to speak on him doing that because he's seeing what Bogavats and Powell and young and Zaden and Stevenson. You see he's seen what they've done since he's been out. And it's like, oh man, you know, maybe maybe those guys since I've been out, I've gotten better. So that can allow me to focus on other things. Maybe maybe there's a game where John the Powell has it going. And I can just, you know, focus more on rebounding. Or maybe there's a situation where normally I would shoot over a double team.
But instead, I can pass it out to Zaden because I know he's going to make the right play. So I think there's a little bit of that. Now, these guys are going to have to keep making the plays when he does come back. But I think trust is a big part of it. And I think, you know, it's cliche. But you always hear the athletes say. And when I was a reporter, I would ask the guys, it's like, what can you learn, Joey Powell, by sitting on the bench with an injury? It's like, oh, the game slows down. And I'm able to look at the reads and understand what the coach is saying. I don't know if that's the case for Caleb because he's jumping around all the time. But I do think there is some truth in it. Like, it's just a different view. And you can see things that maybe you don't see when you're on the court. So a combination of all that. But I think trust is the biggest thing in that, you know, it just makes it a, it makes them think a little bit more before going into like one on three or one on four mode. One ice coffee. 99 cents please. For real? No way.
One ice coffee. 99 cents please. For real? No way. What a deal. Your new morning groove. Ice coffee from McDonald's, any size for just 99 cents till 11 a.m. Price and participation may vary. Cannot be combined with any other offer. Well, we've talked about before how much Hubert Davis transacts interest, right? How much he traffics interest and how important that is to him. So it wouldn't shock me for all of that to be spot on trail in since that when Caleb Wilson comes back, you know, it kind of manifests itself within the rest of the team. Sean, we've talked about before what Carolina misses with Caleb Wilson being out. I want to ask you what do you feel like they might be able to do from an offensive layer standpoint, I guess, when he comes back now. Because again, we've seen some new things offensively from this team. We don't have to worry about the Caleb Yolo. You mentioned last week with him being, you know, with him just say, hey, Caleb
good figured out. We've seen some things that I think will carry over. So I want to ask you, what sort of layers can come back or can North Carolina introduce with a healthy Caleb Wilson when he returns to the floor? Well, I think I'm going to start with confidence just from a lot of a lot of the probably non-point guards. And even, you know, Dixon and Evans, I think have have confidence even though they've struggled at certain times. But from Jare and Desaden to Luca to Powell, I think there's a lot of confidence, you know, from those players and what they have been able to do. So I think when he does come back, there's just that, you know, maybe he doesn't have to get 25 and 10 right off the bat. Hopefully he has fresh legs, which can carry him when he does come back through hopefully several more weeks and playing hard. And I think that shouldn't go unnoticed just of having those fresh legs. And yeah, it is going to take a little time to get acclimated
just from his body perspective, but also to the team again, right? Because now you have the best player reinserting themselves and how is everybody moving around him? But at the same time, I think going back to the preseason talked about how does five, you know, the five players operate together? And the sum of the parts making, making things better for this team where the individual talent outside of the front court, you know, is not at NBA, NBA level. But I do think some of the stuff they've been able to do in the half court, which I think we started to see, you know, from the UVA game on of utilizing the two bigs, the different four or five, moving Steven sent a bit more to the four than the three, you know, in terms of Luca, of what he can do, especially from a kitchen shoot situation, maybe he's able to get into more kitchen shoot spots, or he's over 40% versus even yesterday was a little more off the dribble trying to create. So if you can get him and pal in kitchen shoots, and if he's a still able to read the defense properly, like he was firing those
both point passes right to the right to the guys, I think it, you know, it should raise a ceiling, but I do think there is going to be an adjustment time. One, just getting his stamina back, hopefully in the long run, that plays well with the legs, but two also, everybody getting used to each other. And once again, we don't have to go too far back to the due game where first half, it seemed like he was the only one that was able to do something against their length and size, and that team's coming up this week, you know, and who knows in the ACC tournament. So I think having a guy who can get you, if you can get you, whenever you need, but also having the confidence of the others, hopefully can turn this into a offensive tier that we thought they might be able to get in at the end of the season. The fresh legs thing is such a great point, Sean, because I think he was starting to get worn down a little bit just from the minutes and the physicality that he been playing all season. If you look at his rebounding numbers, he hadn't had a double figure
rebounding game since January 10th. That was against Wake Forest. So that's a long time ago, even after, you know, since he got hurt, it was still had already been a month since then. So I think being away from the game, I would expect him to have fresh legs, and I really think slash hope that that will impact his rebounding, because that is an area that North Carolina, Zayden Highs picked up the slack, it don't get me wrong, but that's an area that can be even better in. And I think Caleb with the fresh legs, offensive rebounds, putbacks, that kind of stuff could really, really help you and see, you know, if he's able to come back versus Duke or an AC tournament, whenever it is, that's what I'm looking forward to, because it was becoming an issue, like I said, because of fatigue and I think and because of the low dedicated carries. Yeah, I would expect that when Wilson returns that it's not reintegrating, I think this team actually can level up with him. I think we've seen that and I think that's what most fans want to hear. And just to reset where he is with everything, he has not been cleared for contact yet. He is
participating in individual drills and shooting and all that good stuff, but he has not been cleared for five on five or for contact yet. So with North Carolina playing Tuesday night, that tells you what needs to happen for him to be available for the Tar Heels. But I think it's safe to say, if he is cleared, then he will play, if he is not cleared, then he will not play. I think that's pretty easy. Moving on, we talked a little bit about the role players earlier. I want to talk about how we can concretely expect this team or at least this coaching staff to get the most out of these role players. We talked earlier about getting more minister Jonathan Powell calling plays for him that matter. How do you keep Zaden high as energy big when he's able to be sharp and situational in the minutes that he's getting? What sort of actions can they do to get Powell more offense? Can you keep Seth Trimble controlled in his aggression to avoid late game over dribblings? All of those things, I think are important. Sean, what actions do you feel like maximize
this current roster as a whole? You've done a really good job of pointing out where North Carolina can deploy these players talents? I'm going to ask you right now, point blank. What two things can this team do really well that gets the most out of what's on the bench? Before I go into the bench, one thing I would love to see more of, it was the past that Powell made the Trimble going downhill, and I was going to be a backward violation, but I think getting him going downhill, we talked about this even back last summer of how can you utilize Wilson? Somebody that's not really a three-point shooter. How do you get him with his momentum attacking defenders? We'd love to see that a little bit more instead of in the pick and roll. I think it gives Trimble a little more head downhill, but in terms of the bench, Powell, let's start with Powell in terms of I think being hopefully what could be the most reliable. Now, I'll take that back because you're going to have
Steven, Sid or Bogevots coming off the bench, but staying at Powell in terms of just that three-point shooting, because they start can hit a few. Everybody can hit a few, but you don't know where it's going to come from or how are you going to get to that eight to eight to ten. Sometimes that can be a big deficit. If you can get the two to three per game, that in itself is going to be very significant. I think it's keeping his confidence up. In terms of how engaged he was defensively, defensive rebounds, moving without the ball. I'm going to probably a lot of that came from after the Louisville game in terms of not playing much, having the zero point. I think keeping him locked in mentally as well as the motivation is one thing. Whether it's Luca or Stevenson, I know they've had, I think their confidence has grown, but they have had a little bit of a roller coaster in some of these games. When they are on the downhill, they've been picked up by others, but I think they need to look to get Stevenson in the kitchen shoot or pick and pop,
what he likes to do or get him in certain situations. In the post on certain defenders, and then I talked about it a few minutes ago, but Luca is just a different player on kitchen shoot. I think the most dangerous player on the team in those situations, but still getting a little bit off the dribble for him. Then Zaden, we talked about it. His offensive rebounding ability, which they did have against Virginia Tech in terms of around 40% of their mishots were offensive rebounds. That's the percentage that needs, you know, or close to, that needs to happen so that if they are having off shooting nights or they are missing a few shots, then they're able to give those second chance opportunities. So the offensive rebounding for him should be that main focus point. Love that, Cheryl. I would ask you, who do you feel like has earned the most trust based on where they started earlier in the season, right? Because what you saw is at the end of these games, it's different. It's, you know, Hubert Davis, as you said earlier,
is riding the hot hand. He's going with Jonathan Powell at times. He's going with Eric Dixon at time. I'm just going with kind Evans at times. You saw yesterday, you know, with with Luca Bogevaz, not having a great game and taking some rush shots early in the shot clock, he parked himself and there was some accountability him sitting right there beside the staff is the game got down to the wire. So I want to ask you, if you're comparing it from a Delta standpoint, who do you feel like has moved up the most in the Hubert Davis trust tree from where they were early in the season? That is a fascinating question. Man, I mean, I, I think just think it has been Zaden again because this sounds bad, but the trust level was just so low that any, any movement upwards was is tremendous is that he was quick. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, think about it. Think about that those first tennis or games of the season, like he would come in, he foused someone twice, he used to go to the bench. Yeah. Right. He usually goes to the bench and big shot against Kentucky. He did. Yeah. Yeah.
He tied, he tied the game, right? Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Because I was, we were all yelling at Caleb, know your person now, because Zaden was streaking down the court and came through him a fast and to Zaden's credit, he got it inside the game. But I think it's him. But in general, to me, it's not so much more as a confidence thing, like I'm thinking about Hubert Davis himself. I think he's done a really good job of like trusting himself and saying just because, you know, I believe in Sean Moran so much, if Sean doesn't have it, I'm not playing him tonight, or I'm only playing him 10 minutes. Does it mean that he thinks Sean is a terrible player, or that Sean isn't going to help him in the future? It's just that on that particular night, Sean doesn't have it. Because on Saturday, Sean might have it. And if Sean does have it, he's going to keep Sean in the game. So like I almost, it's a weird answer, but I almost feel like Hubert Davis has gained confidence in himself to better understand the state of his team at any given time and kind of push the right buttons to understand who needs to be on the court and why. So like Zaden as a
player, but I also think there's been growth in how Hubert has handled himself over the course of the year. It's it's really crazy, too, man. If you think about, you know, Zaden Hyde and how he's, I guess, how he's been thrown into the fire. What does this team look like if Zaden Hyde plays his first game without or whatever the first game was? I can't remember who it was after Miami. What happens if Zaden Hyde comes out and plays like Zaden Hyde did earlier in the season? Where is it now? They would have lost the Pittsburgh and yeah, it would be probably what we think it would we thought it was going to be. Yeah, yeah. And again, so that that just goes to show how how important it is. And I'm going to I'm going to give Hubert Davis some flowers here. He's always said it's guys have to know that he can't tell him when your time's going to come, but you've got to be ready when it does. And two, Joey, also, I want to make sure we're being fair. Like injuries also made him do some stuff. Like, like, I mean, and it's all Zaden to show up
when those things happen, too. Right. Right. Like, I, you know, Luca, Luca was going to play even if Seth hadn't gotten hurt. If Caleb doesn't get hurt, Zaden probably wouldn't have played at all. If they saw it doesn't get hurt, Zaden wouldn't have played at all. So like, yes, he right now is distressing his players more, but also it is a situation where they were ready when their time was called. But if everybody was healthy, he wouldn't have happened. So like, it's a kind of, you know, chicken egg type deal, I guess. Either way, there's no pictures in the scorecard. Right. What is a doctor? I don't need to describe you to show me the baby. I think something that's really that's really been slept on with this team is how much they probably shop a Johnny T shirt. I mean, if you think about what this team probably did when they got back from California, they're like, look, that sucked. Let's go get a new wardrobe. We're going to go about Johnny T shirt. Johnny T shirt right now just looked at the site before the show today. Remember those old satin
block letter arc letter jackets that you used to see baseball managers wearing in the 90s? Johnny T shirt has those for Carolina. They got a white one that is so absolutely slick. I mean, it's just it pops. It's amazing. The kids would say it has a lot of Riz. Johnny T shirt is where you need to go check it out. JohnnyTshirt.com. They're right there on East Franklin Street. Hey, look, I went to the boss today. I saw the Tar Heels hang 21 on something called La Moine. While I was there, I saw folks rocking brand new Tar Heel baseball shirts. The Tar Heels have two different types of pin stripes in baseball. They have a Carolina blue with a white pin stripe and they have a white with a Carolina blue pin stripe. You can get both of those from Johnny T shirt. Next time you're in town, go see him. If you're in town for Wednesday night, Johnny T shirt, go by before the game, pick up some gear. You'll be glad you did. Use that code, found on the message boards, save you an extra 10% off. They're already amazing prices. We love Johnny T once you guys to love them as well. All right, guys, let's look forward a little bit.
We got a little bit left in the show, but we got two games left. Carolina playing, home against Clemson and then at Duke to close the season. Greg Barnes has done an amazing job of laying out what the seating scenarios are for North Carolina with regard to the ACC tournament. I dare say, after the NC State game two weeks ago, none of us thought that the double buy was in play for this team for the ACC tournament. Here we sit and they really actually do control everything in front of them to get that double buy. Let's see where that goes. First things. First Tuesday night, home against Clemson. Clemson's been very much in the same swim. They typically are in February. They usually just completely crush it through January and then somewhere around Valentine's Day, Brad Brown, all his team falls off. Well, they got a big win this past weekend against Louisville. North Carolina hosts them on Tuesday night. They will finally do the ceremony for RJ Davis's jersey honoring. Cheryl, you tell me what sort of emotions you think this
team is going to have to put together to beat a Clemson team that is capable but not look forward to Saturday and not let the emotions of senior night in the last home game get to you. I had to be prepared for a rock fight and they're going to have to understand there's not going to be. I don't think there's going to be a ton of possessions. I don't think there's going to be a tempo September was not going to have these easy paths to the lane. It's going to be like take the under is my suggestion. I think it's going to be a ugly game where Clemson is going to try to basically run the ball on Carolina to use a football analogy play after play after play until they finally wilt. So they're going to have to be really smart offensively especially more southern ever like moving the ball is going to be key because Clemson is a really solid defensive team and so like the whole point of offense basketball is to gain an advantage. So like you gain an advantage through
penetration or kicking out and dishing so that the defense is a step behind. So like there shouldn't be a lot of one-on-one. Carolina doesn't have a lot of players who can do that anyway. It should be Chris ball movement, Chris cutting and that's how you score your points and get to the free throw line. That's Clemson. I don't think they can outscore you and see but if you and see like let's them get comfortable they can make some shots. Like I think Ace Buckner, one of their guards is he doesn't have a great three point percentage for the season but like an ACC play he's like way up there and like 42% or something like that. We know Dylan Hunter can shoot Nick Davidson can sometimes shoot they have guys they're capable but Carolina if they can just like be patient I think on offense I think they'll have enough but be patient and don't let him get comfortable. Sean what's the simplest way for North Carolina to win against Clemson. Cheryl talked about ball movement he talked about being willing to grind it out and use that edge that we've seen over the last
couple of weeks. Can it be a Henry Vassar game in your opinion. It definitely can be a Henry Vassar game. They're going to they have some size and they're going to try to push them bully him body him early on which we know he can shy away a little bit from but I think that's where it's on even seats players and UNC's coaching staff to make sure that he can they continue to feed him in certain situations I think getting him you know moving from left block into the into the center catching you know mid post you know same thing for the right block so getting him in movement will be really important and then continuing to feed him because you know go back to the Stanford game where it felt like UNC was scoring from two every time but then you had Stanford just hitting wide open threes so I think this game just given Clemson they force you to work through the whole shot clock defensively so there as Charles said they're not going to give up these wide
open layups that that triple was having and and others are wide open threes so it's going to be tough and people are going to have to have to hit tough shots but I think if you can start from Vassar weaken them a little bit then that can open things up for the perimeter guys especially in that second half and then defensively not a lights out three point shooting team but definitely capable and they've shown you know even going back to win they beat Caller Stanford they can swing from five to six threes up to twelve twelve plus threes so a lot of that's going to be making sure that they don't get comfortable either on the three point the three point side but it's going to Clemson is going to slow down make it ugly try to eliminate offensive rebound so that that's where it does come if you get UNC to sneak a few of those in get those extra possessions that will be really important this type of game so looking forward to Saturday and I you know I would caution anybody to really overlook Clemson for Duke and I got to make sure I tip a cap to you to the UNC
women who beat Duke today at home in Carmichael which if my math maths correctly that's a sweep against Duke this season no no they lost him earlier that's right because Duke had won however many interrupts so forget that I said that I went at that out in post but big win at home against the blue dollars on senior day I was really cool to see how many people showed up for that game so looking forward towards Duke in Cameron on Saturday really really big match up but the cool thing is if North Carolina could beat Clemson there's not you know it could be a little bit of a it could be a little bit of a house money situation Sean I'm thinking about the way North Carolina beat Duke the first time is it as simple as doing something similar well this one yeah I think the point spread is probably going to be in the 13 to 16 point range which is which is pretty large you know I think I mean Duke's been amazing at home they just beat
the brakes off of Virginia and it wasn't close so I understand why the spread will be large yeah and I haven't watched the last well I watched the Michigan game but I don't know if Darren Harris if that's going to be a permanent thing just trying to because they did shoot the ball well but I think you know when UNC's surprise them it was the power of the three hitting those three three's not nine points you know pretty quick succession that has not been UNC's strength in making 10 plus 10 plus three's but I do think UNC was almost felt like they got punched in the face first with that defensive strength or defensive length and you know how how Duke plays defense now the gun buzz probably not going to pick up fouls that's going to make life tough on on Vesar but I think they've they've experienced a length they've experienced it obviously playing at Cameron where you know one shot you know we'll get the Duke team going but I think they you know they saw what it takes to beat them I think you could look at it two ways of this is the Austin River's game in
the reverse word you could think Duke was clearly the better team similar UNC was when they lost that first game and then the second game happens and the you know UNC just crushed them you know could do crush UNC possibly or is this the second half of what what what we saw and they can play more competitively throughout and keep it a game and the reserves of the the non Henry's Caleb's are stepping up and making big shots consistently and showing that hey you know we're talking about a four to six seed in the tournament but we can compete with the you know this this top tier especially on the road or is it a 15 to 16 point game and Duke gets the revenge from from what happened and they're celebrating in their their final final game I think it could go either way but I think just having that that first half experienced it at last time playing them even early on in the second half to just continuing to push to get back those to get back those leads will
will pay off and I think Henry will need to have another big game but I think everybody knows what they're going up against this time. Cheryl how do you think the reserves that have been so big the last couple of weeks how do you think they tolerate their first exposure to that environment. So a couple of things before I answer that y'all know the last time Duke lost at home. Carolina and in coach K's final out of years. The format grind game. The format went for like 74 points and yeah yeah he was sick in the head yeah all right yeah that's been a long time ago I think Shire's lost like three or four games at home is head coach so not an easy task part of it is because they have great teams part of it is because it is a tough venue but I think this particular UNC team is thinking especially about Zaden High and Jonathan Powell they have let's call it a level of gumption that I think maybe previous reserves that Carolina didn't have and so they're not going to be like intimidated at all
they might be nervous but they won't be intimidated and I think they actually feed off of that stuff if they're playing well if like they do some good things those are two guys who I think could really like kind of rise up because they I think they like being the villain a little bit they like being the bad guy and they like being the one you know the looking to the crowd and wave and do all those things so those are two guys who I think it could be a good situation for even though role players do typically play better at home other than that it's just really when you go in there is about just playing basketball and like not getting caught up in everything and to come on as credit even with heber Davis outside of like the game in the year we won't talk about outside of that year they they typically like have at least a few minutes where they play really well historically going back like 20 years Carolina has almost always gotten like a double digit lead in Cameron if you go back to like 2010 I used to to chart it and it was something like
eight out of ten times they played in Cameron they had a double digit lead the the thing in Cameron is you have to sustain or or be able to withstand when they go when they go nuclear whether it's they get off to a 13 to two lead or you're up you know you're up 13 to 9 and then they go on a 10 nothing run whatever it is you have to be able to withstand it and like not get too wild because so many teams go in there and they start playing into what's happening and they just get so quick and so fast and they're playing out of themselves so I think that's where you would look to a senior leader like set tremble to kind of calm everybody if he's able to play something like kale Wilson who's very calm and very confident you're looking for those guys to kind of settle until everybody can like okay it's just a basketball game so I would say Zayn and power too that I'm looking at just because of their general disposition and how they handle things that maybe they're there too who would relish the opportunity to go in there and play well this feels like
one because of the those rims but two because of the the style of of environment in the size of the gym that maybe this is the the 6-3 game that I've been waiting on from from Luca Bogobots because man we've seen some guys go in there and absolutely torch them you mentioned Kormac Ryan earlier will be fascinating to see and you know like you said trail it's all the other things that go on in there besides basketball I mean I don't even know that half the fans know that there's a basketball game or understand that they're you know there are rules or know the rules of basketball but they're there and they get to wear paint and be on TV and wear costumes whatever good for them before we get out of here Cheryl North Carolina had a visitor Saturday against Virginia Tech a name that folks might not know from recruiting radars but he certainly has the pedigree and the lineage that North Carolina is going to be familiar with tell it was tell us a little bit about Maloy Smith he is the son of Kenny Smith obviously a former kind of all American in the brother of
KJ Smith who played from I forget 2017 to 2021 2016 to 2020 something like that actually started a couple of games the year Cole Anthony was heard so yeah he was on campus he picked up a scholarship offer from he he were Davis earlier in the month it was an official visit and he's got a couple other offers I think Cal has offered him Portland State and a couple other West Coast schools you can check out a story we wrote maybe a couple weeks ago in the site where Kenny Smith kind of gave us a few details about what Maloy was thinking what Kenny was thinking you know it'd be you never want to make predictions but it'd be pretty surprising if it went a different way just because of the lineage and everything and the kid is growing up around everything UNC but Kenny did tell us that you know he wanted that he or Davis said they wanted him and Kenny Smith said well he needs to feel that and so we'll see if he felt it on the visit and we'll we'll follow up and do time
all right boys before we get out of here anything else that maybe we left on the table that you know that you guys want to take a spoon to before grandma covers it up and puts it in the fridge Sean only thing for me Maxi Adams and Sierra Canyon they won the Southern open division Southern sectional championship on yesterday on Saturday they play on the seventh and the potentially the tenth so they there could be making their way to the the state championship winner go home but he saw as a few more games left and has been playing very well over the last few months I didn't realize how how quick his release were how quick his release was at the top of his release until I saw some stuff on the other day just got a really really quick hand motion when he gets the ball out of his hands Cheryl anything else you want to you want to throw in for we wrap the shift I'm actually going to ask you a question to in the show one other note two days senior night you know I like you said our two Davis is being honored but Elijah Davis is the other scholarship senior
on the team so I think as long as tradition stands Elijah Davis will start the game not sure who for but he'll start and then what I wanted to ask you Joey and let you end it used to do like hey what are we going to be talking about next weekend what what are the headlines so I'm going to ask you next Sunday night what are what are we talking about how did we go North Carolina goes one and one but somehow because Jim Phillips can't be bothered to have any real tie breakers for any of his sports North Carolina will end up being the seven the seat or something stupid I don't think seventh is actually on the table but you know it'll it'll it'll be something dumb that could have absolutely been fixed but because the folks that run this the folks that run this conference you know don't really do so with authority or with any you know real logic and run it like a second rate conference I think that's what's going to happen so Carolina goes one and one and then next week everybody's mad because the tie breakers came into play and and honestly UNC gets punished
because Virginia didn't play Miami and uh or Miami didn't play Duke and Virginia didn't play Clemson or something like that I don't know um I'll put a row I'll put a bow in it from that uh Sheryl's got me all fired up but uh hey you shut up to the 400 folks that joined us tonight if you're listening to us later on make sure you subscribe to the youtube channel rate and review we really appreciate it um and we'll talk to you next time but this has been a it's been a fun show to do it's always easier to do these than the teams winning so uh appreciate all of you guys jumping in with your great comments appreciate Sheryl and Sean for always making time for us and bringing the heat that they bring so far but until next time for inside Carolina this is the coast coast I'm Joey Powell y'all make it a great week take care one ice coffee 99 cents please for real no way
