Now take a look at this man. He used to read the news in Uganda and today he's a king. His coronation as monarch of the Ugandan Torah Kingdom follows a business succession route that has divided a royal family and gripped the country. STW's Julius Mukambhuah, who was at the legal ceremony, explains.
This is the coronation of a new king of Torah. His name is Edward Rukidi, Nia Bongo the First. But to understand what this means, you need to understand what the kings mean to the people here. This king does not govern Uganda. He has no executive or political power. His role is culture. But the selection of King Edward Nia Bongo the First was not so straightforward because the royal family went through a series of disagreements on who should succeed King Oyu. With the Torah Queen Mother and the sister of the late King Oyu dismissing Nia Bongo's ascension to the throne. Claiming King Oyu had a previously undisclosed biological son who should have been handed the crown instead and the king had set this out in his will before he died. The kingdoms reflect pre-colonial Uganda. Where these kingdoms and the chiefdoms
offered leadership to the community. But now Uganda being a republic. They have the influence but do not have the executive powers. The executive power belongs to the republic. President Chauwerem Seventy who attended the coronation to emphasize why he took a decision to return the kingdoms. He wanted Uganda to have their sense of identity not compromised even when in the past in the 1960s these traditional kingdoms had been abolished. The problem was the hereditary leaders trying to continue with political power. But now you can see that there were very big areas of society where which were not at risk to agree to the end of this. More than two million people live in the wider Torah sub-region and the Omokama is an important symbol of their shared identity history and culture.
The people of Torah now have a new king Edward Rukidi Nia Bongo the first who succeeds King Oyonimba, Kavanba Yiguru, Rukidi Deforth. King Oyon ascended to the throne at only the age of three and for more than three decades he was the face of Torah until last month when he died of cancer in the United States where he was receiving treatment. This is when now his cousin was selected to succeed him. What is before the new king Edward Nia Bongo is a big task. He comes to leadership at the time when his kingdom more than half the population are below the age of 30. That's a very active and young population with a big future. himself in the 56th this December but he has promised the people of Torah
he will unite them regardless of their age, regardless of their background. The kingdom will inspire people to work together because United teeth can break the bone and by supporting the kingdom the kingdom also supports them. But even if the new king can unite his subjects winning this support of the entire royal family could prove to be his greatach. This is Steve Kavino from Kavino and Rich. Julius the new King of Toro has been coronated as we've just seen. But the late King's mother says he is not the right successor and that there is a child who is the rightful heir to the throne. Tell us more.
Yes, if the King mother is not the happy person from having lost idea sign King Boyer from when the announcement from when the news was broken that the King had died. The information of the King having left a child behind came out. Actually, the president of Uganda you're wearing seven in tweeted that he received the news of the death of people you buy. He was told that the King lived by left behind a child. Now the royal family back in Toro asked for the child. They wanted to meet the child, but they also wanted to meet the mother of the child because it's very important according to their customs in choosing a successor to the King. They needed to assess the credibility of the country. From the briefing of the royal family in the Toro kingdom the officials of Toro kingdom say they have no time
of chance. They have not met the child. They do not know the child. They do not know the mother of the child. They do not even know the name of the child. That's what they say. But the Queen mother insists that the late King left the child, left a wheel, and that child should take the crown. But there are families say if we do not know this child then we cannot make this child a success after all. We do not know the child. Right. So does the coronation close this chapter or is there more to come in this royal succession drama? I think it will be too early in one way for someone to say that all is closed and done. Why is because they're still open wounds. They are still people who are still pushing that indeed the crown belongs to this saved child who is saved to be in the document
in the wheel that we have seen on social media. The royal family say they do not trust the document and they trust the new King that they coronated. They ticked boxes from their position, from their point of view. The other side of the saved child should end and life continues with the new coronated King. That is why they went ahead with the formal arrangements and on top of their selection, they involved other parties. They involved the church. That's why we saw the new King go into charge for his coronation. Then they handed over power to the King and they also most importantly involved the state for the president to be at this event. One may conclude to say that the state has already authenticated, has already endorsed the new King and from the tradition of going to view the fact that he has received all his powers and is already at the crown.
Wave up perhaps we'll challenge him later. We'll see that but from now, the people of Toro, they've been presented in your King. The church has been presented in your King of Toro and the state has been presented the new King of Toro Edward Njabonga the First. All right, that's Julius Mugamboi in Campala. Thank you, Julius.
