Welcome into this Friday edition of Locked on Eagles. On today's show, we're going to talk about the Eagles defense, which still is, in my

opinion, even through the first two weeks of the regular season. One of the best, I would say, five to 10 defenses in the NFL, but they do have a playmaking problem right now that I want to get into some potential resolutions for that issue. At the bottom of the league right now, you'll find the Eagles and Sacks. They only have three through the first two games. And they're one of just a few teams that have yet to get a takeaway so far in two weeks against Washington and against Tennessee. And even last year, when you look at the Eagles defense from a playmaking perspective, now when it comes to yards allowed on the ground through the air, points per game. You look at their advanced coverage metrics and so many different numbers from last year. And if you just watch the games, you knew from that perspective, the Eagles were a top three defense and football last year. They were the main reason that they won 11 games and won the division back to back years for the first time since 2004. All three units of the defense was unreal.

But even last year, they were 13th and Sacks. They were 15th and Interceptions. They were 11th and Fumble recoveries. But these are all still above the league average, right? 13th and Sacks is above the 16th median of the league with 32 teams in the NFL doing some math there, right? You know, 15 Interceptions. That's one above the median and then 11th and Fumble recoveries. Like, that's still pretty solid for a defense. But for a unit that even last year, we would consider to be a top three defense and football, that's not enough. I don't know. I want to say it's not enough, but it's because for last year, the defense did enough to carry them as far as they could. But I would say it's underwhelming for a team that has as much talent as they do on all three levels of this unit, on the defensive line, at linebacker in the secondary. Has the defense been disappointing this year through two games? I mean, no, they haven't really had a brutal game where an offense had their way with them

on the ground or through the air, completely blowing them out. That hasn't been the case. But yeah, again, playmaking is still a thing that I feel like there is more meat on the bones and there should be when you have guys like Jalen Carter and Moro iszoma and Jalux Hunt on the defensive line. And you have Zach Bond and Jihad Campbell at linebacker and you have the best corner trio in football with Quinyan Mitchell and Rik Wolen and Cooper DeGene. And we know that Drew McCuba has ball skills. He showed that last year, the first month and a half of the year, he had two interceptions. The reason he was a second round pick out of Texas was because of his playmaking ability. Like these guys should have more than zero interceptions. They should have more than zero force fumbles, zero fumble recoveries and only three sacks on the year. So that's something I want to see more of from this defense starting on Monday night football this Monday against Case Quinum, the third string quarterback for the Chicago Bears. I want to see this defense be aggressive. Like yeah, they're still not allowing a lot of points per game this year passing yardage,

even rushing yards wise. Like yeah, Tennessee had some big explosive runs against the birds, but you know, it was over 150 degrees on that field. Everybody's gassed and it's not like they had a hundred yard rushers. So again, comparatively speaking to the standard this defense is set, maybe it's been up and down. But for the most part, again, from the areas of the defense they've normally been great at. In 2026, but I just I want to see more plays on the ball outside of the one peanut punch from Jalen Carter in the first game against Washington. Like they haven't even really been close to getting a turnover. So Vic Fangio said this week in his press conference is that, you know, they're do for one, right? And I do hope against a third string quarterback that he doesn't coach scared like he doesn't have these lighter boxes. He goes after kingdom. I would like to see some more pressure packages. Some disguise looks. Let's heat up case kingdom, right? Don't make it easy on him with a four man pass rush. Go get him. Like send the blitz, send you hot Campbell and Zach Bond, send Coupard to Jean hell.

Let's try some like different kind of blitz packages. Why don't we try Rick Wolland who six four and runs a four to six? How about Rick Wolland comes off the edge at corner back and with that size and length, even if he doesn't get there, get your hands up. There's an opportunity to make a play on the ball with a forced in completion or a tip up in the air for an interception. So I want to see them be more aggressive in that way, but Fangio believes they're do for one. So he believes it's just a matter of when, not if, but I do believe there are some things they can do to help out this area of the defense. I think you can send, you know, different kind of blitz packages. I think the four man pass rush just needs to be better. The Eagles are eighth in the league right now in total pressure percentage, but they're dead last right now in quick pressures, which tells me most of their top 10 pressures in the league have been a result of great coverage on the back end. So that's another thing they can fix is just getting to the quarterback quicker, force him into mistakes. But regardless of the why, the what of it all is that they don't have enough, I don't want to say they don't have enough playmakers.

They don't have enough plays on the ball for the talent that they have for the money that they're investing in the draft. It's they've invested on that side of the football. Yeah, I don't know like I want to see more of that. So I think you can generate more pressure and that can help write for man pressure blitz packages. They need to finish plays to like when more was your mother gets to jade and Daniels don't have them bounce right off you. J looks hunt got to cam ward and he had him wrapped up and cam ward still escapes like you got a finish plays when you get there. And I will say to defend the defense a little bit. You know, there are things like I just laid out that you can do to help in this way to make plays on the ball. But some of it's also just a product of how good you are in the back end when it comes to play, you know, turnover specifically takeaways, force, fun bowls, interceptions, even like pass breakups, you don't see a lot of them. That's also just a result of how good you are in coverage. I mean, Quenya Mitchell and Rik Woa and have barely given up anything this year.

Quarterbacks are not trying to test them and, you know, sure, Cupert is Jean had a bad first game, but you didn't really hear much from Wondell Robinson against Tennessee week two. I feel like Cupert is Jean had a bounce back performance and normally he's a first team all pro slot corner. So quarterbacks aren't testing them, right? And in Zach Bond and Jihad Campbell are two of the best coverage linebackers. I think that might be the best coverage linebacker duo in the entire league. So some of it's actually a positive, though, too, that they haven't had as many opportunities to make plays in the ball. It's because the coverage is so good. Quarterbacks really are only throwing the ball. If there's really a wide open look and there just hasn't been many of those. So that is something we need to see change. But to put it in perspective, it's not like this is a red alert issue where the season's going to end if they don't get this going. I mean, last year, the defense completely carried you to the playoffs and they were middle of the pack and in sacks 13 in the league last year.

They were 13th, 15th and interceptions, 11th and, you know, fumble recoveries. So, you know, the sky's not falling. Some of this is a product of how good you are and not allowing the ball to come your way. But I do think there are things they can do to help not correct this problem, but to help force an offense into mistakes, to help force them into sacks. You got to finish when you get there, when you get to pressure, you got to turn that pressure into sacks. I think also, you know, dialing up some blitzes. There's things like fangio can do, but overall, the defense is way too talented to be one of the few teams in the league right now to not have a takeaway. And only three sacks, you know, two against Tennessee and one against Washington, just not good enough. Even without Jonathan Grenard, you have so much talent in your front seven that, you know, you just got to finish these plays and you got to get there a whole lot quicker than they are. So, yeah, I mean, there's definitely room for improvement on defense, but I feel like this could be a get right game against the Chicago Bears.

You're playing a third string quarterback on Monday night football. You know, this to me is the kind of game that you hope to see those plays being made that Vick Fangio says the defense is due for. So we'll see what happens, but that's the big thing that I'm watching for the defense right now is let's, let's make some more plays on the ball. I know you don't give up a lot of yards rushing, passing, you don't give up a lot of points. Your coverage is unbelievable. You know, pressure wise, you are eighth in the league, but get there and get the quarterback down, try to make some plays on the ball for some fumbles, get some interceptions, foot the field. That's something they really haven't done this year so far. And that would obviously help an offense that's struggling a lot to sustain drives on early doubts. All right, guys, coming up next right here on the lock dot Eagles podcast. As we talked about all week, the Eagles are certainly not a finished product yet in 2026. And yet there's still two and oh, and there's one guy that hasn't got enough credit for that fast start. And we'll talk about that next coming up right here on the lock down Eagles podcast. All right, continuing on this Friday edition of the locked on Eagles podcast. Thanks so much for making us your first listen each and every day. So as we talked about in segment one, even the Eagles elite defense, which I feel like you still been pretty good through the first two weeks of the season. There's still no finished product like playmaking, sacks, force fun bowls, interceptions. Some of that is a byproduct of just how good this team is that an offense is not giving you opportunities to make those kind of plays. But there are, you know, areas of improvement for that unit to force interceptions and forced fun bowls and finish plays. When you get pressure on the quarterback, get the guy to the ground and generate more sacks. That's something that they've had a problem with so far this year and also just in general creating quick pressures. So even that defense, which has been the strength of your team for about a year and a half now, there's room for improvement.

Like this team is no finished product on either side of the ball. And yet they're still two and a lot of that we've equated to Jalen hurts just playing at an elite level right now. Like Jalen hurts is playing his feel for the pocket as that really high high right now in his feel for pressure. When to sit there and climb the ladder, find the open man down the middle went to roll outside, make plays with his legs, when to run the ball, when to create with his legs for the passing game. Like Jalen is dialed in right now would be the right word. He is locked in and I think he's the main reason you're two and a but I will say somebody that's not getting enough credit for the Eagles two and a start is the head coach. I think Nick Seriotti is a huge reason for the Eagles being two and a right now to start the 2026 regular season and it's for the same reason that the Eagles started to and oh last year and they started two and oh and no not in 2024 they are one and one but in 2023 they were two and oh and in 2022 they were two and oh Nick Seriotti has been instrumental in getting this team off to hot starts even when.

In the weird month of September around a chaotic NFL where everything feels weird everything feels rusty and unpredictable the Eagles still start the season fast even if the team themselves from an execution standpoint you know from just when you look at them being a complete team even though they are not a finished product to start the year and they have a lot of ups and downs and they're figuring out who they are and there's a lot of parts of their game that they're struggling with right now. With all that being said they still end up to know the majority of the time they're starting a season with Nick Seriotti as their head coach a lot of that again is on the backs of the quarterback Jalen Hertz and just this team finding a way to win these close toss up games but I think the reason you're able to find a way to win those games in September when things are weird in the NFL and when you're you know not a perfect team and you're rusty and you're figuring out who you are. Those results even with all of those obstacles in the way I think are a byproduct of your head coach having you prepared for those moments in Seriotti talked about it before the regular season opener against Washington he was asked by the media like what is the secret sauce behind your hot starts I mean Nick Seriotti and Jalen Hertz together through six seasons have never lost a week one and that street continued this year against the Washington commanders and he talked about how September is a season.

So many starters across the league now don't play in the preseason when you have a new coach you know calling plays on offense like Sean Manion and you have new personnel you're figuring things out there's not a lot of tape to go off of there's actually no tape to go off of for your opponent who might have a lot of changes in their own right on their side of the ball and offense and defense for them on their coaching staff you know you have to be okay with it not looking pretty good. Perfect you can't be miserable if you barely hang on in September a win has to be a win and I think that is what Nick Seriotti preaches with this team and I think that's what he preached against Tennessee and he shows it with his emotions like he doesn't salt even if he knows yeah barely beating the Titans you know that's not going to be good enough in December in January if you're going to try to compete for a Super Bowl but I think Seriotti understands the timeline of a season he understands the arc of how a season goes.

And what each month calls for and in September I think it's okay to be okay with winning at all costs now eventually you can't play the way you did against Tennessee and against Washington if you want to win a championship look at 2017 look at 2022 look at 2024 even if in those years there were times they had some walls and they were figuring things out eventually they went on these dominant complete runs and all three of those championship level seasons you won the Super Bowl and the two of those seasons you got to one in another in 2022 you know eventually got to figure that out but in September like it's okay to barely eat out a win in 2022 against the Detroit Lions or in 2024 week three in New Orleans against the Saints when you don't have AJ Brown and get out of there with a win this year against Tennessee with the heat just exhausting your team get out of there with a W even if it takes just four seconds left in the fourth quarter to pull that thing out. That that's okay right now I think Seriotti is really good at balancing the standard the ability to the need to be better right to continue to strive to be a better football team but also understanding that winning is the most important thing I think he juggles those two responsibilities really well early on in the year and I think you can equate a lot of the Eagles early season success including this year to Nick Seriotti and that approach and look this sounds cliche.

You might roll your eyes but Nick Seriotti constantly to an annoying level constantly harping on the fundamentals details playing together the team objective over the individual goal which is a huge message for this team this year AJ Brown Nick Seriotti preaching those things and you hear all the time when he's mic'd up and you hear like you know behind the scenes videos you watch those in his meetings he's talking about tough detail together and you're going to be able to do it. I'm not sure like oh my gosh this is probably so annoying for the team to hear if we're annoyed imagine what the team hears every single day but grilling that into this team's brain I think allows more or was your mom in that two point conversion situation and it's Washington to recognize that play to get grounded and to lean on his fundamentals his details the work and preparation he puts in during the week in practice to make that play like this team. Yes they don't always put it away easy and it's never comfortable in this Eagles team wins a football game it feels like for a year is now but they make a play they make the play the other team doesn't and that's a preparation thing and I think Nick Seriotti we can make fun of him like what does he do here we talk about it we joke about it in the squad show all the time and he hasn't called plays but had coaches do more than just call plays and I feel like Seriotti is not getting enough credit for.

It how he gets this team ready to win these close games when the pressure is on you gotta do it this team doesn't the other team doesn't more times than not and yeah a lot of this is also Jalen hurts and Devonte Smith went to Alabama and they've been through these big games and they learn from Nick Sabin and. You know Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis Nolan Smith they also had that experience at Georgia they're big game battle tested but you're also big game battle tested and. Philadelphia if you've been with this team since 2022 even 2021 you made the playoffs since Nick Seriotti's been the head coach he has also given you so much of that experience that. If you've been a part of this core for a while you know what it takes and I just I give a lot of that credit to the head coach and you know again it's it's barely a win in Tennessee in. In November and December and January you want to be playing a lot better football than you are right now but. Because if not look at what happens in 2025 eventually it'll catch up to you there is a balancing act of not just being sad to satisfy with a win no matter what but.

But in September I think Seriotti does realize you know the value of just getting wins now versus later on in the year what the season calls for and I just think he's he's very self aware in that way he really does understand the NFL and. The role coach to ride that is a regular season in one of the tails to climb the mountaintop every single year I just feel like he is such a pro in that way and I feel like this week he's not getting enough credit for the Eagles currently being to know and they start the season fast. Every single year and I think a lot of that is because of Nick Seriotti alright guys we will wrap up this Friday edition of the lockdown Eagles podcast coming up next it is interesting. Watching the NFL for two weeks this really still is it comes down to a quarter back driven league even with the how complicated football is and I think Jalen hurts is a big part of showing the NFL this year that. It's still a quarterback driven league and we're going to talk about that next right here on the lockdown Eagles podcast. quick hitters on YouTube and audio form as well we just launched that last month locked on Eagles hits you can find that on YouTube or wherever you get the locked on Eagles podcast so you know we have talked a lot about Jalen hurts this week and last week he has really played well through the first two games and again the season is a marathon not a sprint there's a lot of games to be played Jalen hurts has not proven you know unconditionally that you undebaidably so that he has taken that elite step of being a player that can win inside the pocket and outside high volume high efficiency he's going to be an MVP winner this year MVP finalist he looks like that through the first two games but there's a lot of season let to be played but he does look like that through the first two games like I rewatch the Titans game again yesterday I watch Jalen hurts specifically in all his passing attempts he was like his decision making his ball placement the clutch gene the calm demeanor against pressure even the decisions of like when to throw the ball away when to try to run he's just so locked in right now and I really can't believe he's as comfortable in this offense this brand new scheme as he is but he has been maybe the fact that they need him to be has helped maybe the fact that there is more pressure on him has

this kind of almost like forced him to play better I don't want to say that he gets complacent when the run game is great in the defense but I do believe that when those things are going well for this football team Jalen is very aware and knows I don't need to force the issue for us to win football games and he he does what it takes to win he's okay being Robin he's okay being a game manager to his Batman of say Juan Barkley if that's what the team needs but the team not having that right now I think is almost like helping Jalen hurts and he's going to progress faster in the scheme because he knows he has to play aggressive he knows he's got to figure this thing out he's got to carry this football team as the franchise quarterback because the run game has been abysmal and they have given up a lot of pressure up front on the offensive line and so he's playing great he knows he has to and hopefully he'll continue that against Chicago I do believe when you look at how Jalen has elevated this football team through two weeks and when you look at what Josh Allen has done for the bills there to know despite their defense giving up all this time. over 30 points and back to back weeks against Houston in Detroit.

When you look at how well Josh Ann was played, how well Jalen Hertz looks. When you look at what's going on in the NFC East, Jaden Daniels injured Jackson, dark injured Daniels is weak to weak. Darts probably going to miss the season. When you look at those injuries, when you look at the team, the Eagles are playing this Monday night. They're playing Caleb Williams's football team, but Caleb Williams will not be there for the Chicago Bears. They're down to their third string quarterback. Looks like unless Tyson Beijing clears concussion protocol, it's going to be case kingdom on Monday night football. And I don't believe agent will clear in time. It'll most likely be kingdom. I think what this is all showing you through two weeks is, you know, football is a complicated sport. And you see the league adjusting the offense adjust to what the defense does. And the defense adjust to the offense, right? The offense was a spread it out, kind of league on that side of the ball, pass heavy unit, RPO's read option, taking advantage of mobile quarterbacks. And then the defense adjusted, right? They would cover two these shells to stop the deep ball.

They're playing these quarter coverages man match to, you know, counter the RPO era. And they found these cyborgs on defense that can cover so much space against mobile quarterbacks that can go that can be Swiss Army knives against the run and the pass. So what does the offense do? They go in your center more old school offense, 13 personnel tight end heavy, utilize the middle of the field, your quarterbacks need to go through full read progressions, full field progressions again. So the NFL, it's complicated, right? And it's cyclical things always change. Things are always adjusting. There's not like one right way to go about winning. Some teams win because of their defense, their coverage or their past rush. Some teams win because of their offense, the passing game, the running game. It is a very complicated sport and things change every year. That's why there's so much parity in this week. But it really is more simple than that though, right? I mean, it's like it's complicated and simple at the same time. I think a big lesson that I've learned watching Jalen this year and looking at

what's happening across the league is, you know, all of that can be true, right? And teams are trying to stop the quarterback, but it is still a quarterback driven week. Like you are still one play away from your entire season being over. Like the New York Giants are done. Like they're dead in the water now because they lost their quarterback. The Buffalo Bills and the Philadelphia Eagles are 2 and 0, mainly because of their quarterback. So you can do as much as you want on defense to stop these players. And you can try on offense as much as you want to counter not having that player, maybe on your roster by becoming a great running team and, you know, having great players around your maybe good, not great quarterback. But in the end, you know, I know the C-OX one last year without a great quarterback in Sam Darnal, but Sam Darnal was still pretty good last year. It really still is a quarterback driven league. And if you have that player, it can overcome, it can overcompensate for a lot of the inconsistencies and the things you just can't control and football. And I believe that now more than ever.

The last few years, I don't want to say quarterback value has been lowering, but I do feel like you've been able to win easier the last couple of years without that star quarterback than you have in years past. But this season, I don't know. It feels like you got to have that guy again. And I think the Eagles have that player in Jalen Hertz. If you think Jalen Hertz is like a system guy or if you don't believe is a franchise level quarterback, just look at the teams across the league that have average quarterback play right now. Look at the teams that lost their starter. Even if they have good roster is and then tell me Jalen is just a plug in play kind of guy and that he is not carrying his football team or not capable of doing that. He has done that more in his career than he gets credit for. He carried this team a lot in 2021 in 2022 in 2023. This year. And I definitely have learned that through the first two weeks of the NFL season. All right, guys, we have one more locked on Eagles episode for you.
